This proved to be an ideal zoom for the zoo, with 135mm being a little too long in just one or two situations. The K5's high ISO ability and in body IS was also a great asset. The owl shot was taken handheld inside an aviary at ISO 1600, no flash, 1/45th of a second at 400mm and still came out pretty sharp - great testament to the in body IS! A really enjoyable set. Re: Mini-GESO: Club Characters (3 photos)
On 6/25/2012 12:56 PM, Walt Gilbert wrote: Hi all, A while back, Larry suggested I take photos of folks who frequent the club where I work. So, I decided to take his suggestion and start snapping photos of them as the opportunity presents itself. These were shot with my K20D, which still had my Promaster 70-300 -- an absurdly long focal length for the size of the room, but it's what I had on the camera when I grabbed it at the last second and headed out the door on Thursday. http://www.flickriver.com/photos/walt_gilbert/sets/72157630283469490/ The first is Bob -- an exceedingly eccentric fellow whose real name is Charlie, but who has several alter-egos which seem to based solely on what he happens to have on his head that given day, be it a trucker's cap (Steve), a straw hat (Charlie), or the thoroughly bedraggled hairpiece he's seen wearing in this image. (The ZipLock bag-as-shirt-pocket is a common accoutrement among all the alter-egos, BTW.) The second shot is of Ronnie -- one of the trustees down at the club. As you can see, he's a little bit skeptical of having his photo taken, but he's a good sport. The final image is of a gentleman named Jimmie Moore -- a retired union electrician whose DNA will likely be preserved by some society dedicated to human longevity. He'll be 79 years old this year and gets around better than I do, isn't much of a guitar player or singer, but one hell of an entertainer. The man can hold forth uninterrupted for hours reeling off toast after ribald poem after filthy limerick to the delight of the entire room. The guitar he's playing in the image is a 1957 Gibson J50 that was given to him in three pieces by a friend and one-time club member whose uncle had fallen on it in a highly drunken state. That member has since passed away, and Jimmie decided to take it to a local guitar maker to see if anything could be done with it. The guy managed to put it back together after hand-making a few pieces and adding a good deal of TLC in the process. So there you have it. A long-winded explication for three photos. Comments and critiques are welcome. -- Walt Interesting cast of characters. The photo of Bob really stands out... Prep for UK pics
Hi Gang: I think I'm going to upgrade to Lightroom 4 this morning, then I'll have to replace one of my external drives this afternoon--then follow that with some photo organization management before downloading the pics from our trip. I think it's going to take a bit of time to get pics posted to the list, but there will be some great group PDML shots from all PDMLers. The shot Chris just posted is just one of the many fun group shots to come. Love the photo, Chris!!! I was in a real rut photographically before the trip, but it should come as no surprise that the trip rejuvenated my eye a bit. Except for our trek up north, I used the 21mm exclusively. Some cropping might be necessary for a few of the shots, but other then that, the 21mm worked wonderfully. I did take the 40 pancake, put it on once when we headed into a pub, but never got any shots off--too busy gabbing, eatting, and drinking. The DA*50-135mm worked beautifully up north for the landscapes, but I'm not so good at landscape, so we'll see how those shots turn out. Darrel and I traveled really light; one backpack each and a small camera kit for me: K5, 21, 40, 50-135 and some memory cards. I took the iPad but no laptop, and I could have left the iPad home. The iPad wasn't a burden to carry, and if I had had the inclination to process photos at night, it would have worked wonderfully, but despite being out of traveling shape, Darrel and I walked and walked everyday, which meant we crashed when returning to the B B at night. The phone, however, was the key piece of the technology. The iPhone 4 doesn't have international calling capabilities, but with free wifi in the B Bs, I was able to communicate fairly easily at night via email --then, of course, there was Starbuck's at most destinations when in route. For our next trip, I hope to have the DA* 55, DA 21, DA* 50-135. There were times in urban areas when I wished for a bit of length. Obviously, I could have put the 50-135 mm on, but lately, when, shooting in urban areas, I prefer a prime; I feel the photographer blends in better with the flow of activity. That 50-135 is a big honking lens, though it does take some great photos, but the DA*55 should prove to be a great alternative. I think I'll post small galleries instead of 1 large gallery. Darrel and I were on the move every two days for a total of 12 days, so lots of pics to go through. It's morning here and I'm going through a bit of a *full English* withdrawal. Peso: NMR, Vermeer, and the Broken Tube
The autosampler on our NMR (like an MRI but with a smaller hole) has broken a few sample tubes in the past week, and this is a huge nuisance because we need to remove a big piece of sensitive tech to clean it out. I was trying to take pictures with the Q to send to the company, but when I got too close the LCD would just lose the picture but still show the info, just like when the lens cap is still on. I guess the magnetic field just affects the sensor? Anyway, since the field has a funny shape I moved back and around until I could get some shots. The first is the magnet with a lovely Vermeer print on the back wall: http://drd1135.smugmug.com/Photography/pdml/i-djRXqM4/0/L/NMR-L.jpg and this is the autosampler from above (a dimple in the magnetic field) showing the broken tube http://drd1135.smugmug.com/Photography/pdml/i-DtgkTpk/0/L/broken-tube-L.jpg I also missed the bottom step of the ladder after taking this and made a less than graceful dismount.:-o -- Steve Desjardins -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Although I'm beginning to suspect that as resolution increases, diffraction and lens issues will soon render anti-aliasing as unneeded. If we're sampling at twice the diffraction limit, or the lenses resolution, do we really need an AA filter? If I had more skill with a spreadsheet, it would be interesting to graph out diffraction limit vs resolution on different sensor sizes. It would also be interesting to see where various lenses fall in sharpness. I.e. on my K-5 with my FA77, when does the lens, the sensor or diffraction limit resolution? Nice work. Although I've not been a regular commenter, I've been following your project closely and read your conclusions with interest. I've not noticed the boosting of the blues and greens in my printing. I wonder if the make/model of printer could also have some effect on this. One very useful feature of LR4, in addition to all the improvements in the process engine, is the soft proofing. Tweaking the image in the soft proofing mode has given me a much better match between display and output. Like I said, a fun project to follow...thanks for sharing. -p On 7/3/2012 9:46 AM, George Sinos wrote: This is the wrap up of the “Print-a-Day for 30 Days” Project. http://georges.posterous.com/top-5-lessons-learned-from-the-print-a-day-fo Thanks for all of the feedback and thanks for being patient with me filling up the list the last few weeks. I 100% agree about the DA*55 vs 50-135 for walking around. The 50-135 impresses and/or scares people and their attitude changes. The DA*55, even with its hood on, is low-key enough that it attracts minimal attention. George: That is a fine start you have made on documenting St Brigid's Church. How old is it? It is certainly a lovely facility. I am interested in following this project. My church in New Jersey is preparing for its 300th anniversary in 2014, although the current church building was constructed only in 1750. I am considering trying to make a small photo booklet of the church building for the anniversary. Fortunately, since it is a Lutheran church, it is much plainer inside and out than St Brigid's; for example, there are only two stained glass windows and a few etched windows. Still, I will be watching what you do and stealing some ideas if you don't mind. Re: PESO - PAD - Top 5 Lessons Learned and moving on...
Hi Paul - I abbreviated the notes on the electric blues because the post was already way too long. Here's what I think is the cause. I could be way wrong. As a result of some reading on Luminous-Landscape, Cambridge Color Labs and a book on color management, when I switched to Lightroom 4 I also set the default color space to ProPhoto, since it's the biggest color space generally available. I'm still not convinced this is needed, because you can't see all of the colors on your monitor or printer. The theory in the books and articles is keep everything in the largest color space possible because you can always convert down, but not back up. My personal concern with this is that it really doesn't make any difference with raw files because color space is assigned after the fact. When you store the raw file it's independent of color space. This advice might come from the time when people were mainly working with TIFFs, PSDs, or JPGs. In those formats, when you assign a color space you've baked it in. So, here's what I think is happening. I'm editing in ProPhoto and looking at it on an sRGB monitor that can't display what I'm actually doing to all of the colors. Boosting the saturation of the blue sky looks great on the screen. But, on the monitor, you can't see all of the blues that will print on the ink jet printer. Then when I print in Adobe1998, the previously invisible blues show up as a nuclear sky. And you're right - turning on the soft-proofing changes the highlight warning to out-of-gamut warning and shows you where you're going to be in trouble. I guess if you want to solve this by throwing money at it, there are a couple of wide gamut monitors out there that actually display Adobe1998. Given that the two I have seen have commas in the price tag, I'll stick with the out-of-gamut warning for now. gs George Sinos gsi...@gmail.com www.georgesphotos.net plus.georgesinos.com On Tue, Jul 3, 2012 at 11:40 AM, Paul Sorenson pentax1...@gmail.com wrote: Nice work. Re: PESO - PAD - Top 5 Lessons Learned and moving on...
Hi Dan - This church was built in 1927. At that time the parish was about 50 years old. As you can guess, that part of town was pretty heavily populated at the time. In fact South Omaha was a separate city from Omaha at that time. There were so many Catholics in that part of town that there were many crowded parishes, each with their own church, and many with their own schools. Times have changed. In the 60's the Interstate Highway was built through that part of town. That displaced a large part of the population to other parts of the city. The economic mixture of the city has also changed and the people in that area are fewer and less affluent. This leaves the church with several facilities that they can't afford to keep. Over the next couple of years, it looks like about five of the churches will be closed. (Keep in mind, these churches are only a few blocks apart.) The disposition of the buildings isn't known at this time. St. Bridget's is slated to survive because of it's size and location. I think that's a good thing because it's one of the most beautiful. On a personal note, it was where I went to grade school. My aunt still lives in the neighborhood and is on the team of women that clean and decorate the church. She mentioned that there had been some minor damage to the windows after a hail storm. That started my train of thought about getting a few photos of the place. When I called the pastor I was surprised to find that he's the older brother of an old buddy from grade school and had grown up a few houses down the street from me. We got to talking. So, getting photos of this particular church has turned into a bigger project. I've been there three times so far and have enough photos to get started on the layout of a book. I'm glad I started doing that early in the project, because I can take the photos with the book layout in mind. That will reduce the amount of stuff that needs to be re-shot. I'm also trying to get started on getting some basic photos of all the churches that may be closed. It would be a shame if they were closed without having some visual record. After managing large projects for the last 30 years I shouldn't have been surprised by how much time this takes. The days of churches being left unlocked all day are long gone due to theft and vandalism. I need to schedule each visit so someone is there to let me in. Post-processing and book layout. Like I said, I think it's going to take a few months. It's a good thing I'm semi-retired. Re: Dumb, really dumb move
I think they were just starting out when I was there. There were some exhibits about the culture, but mostly it was just the mounds. I think the steps on Monk's Mound might have already been built. I remember some kind of steps going up one of the mounds. There's a Mississippian site in North Carolina at Town Creek. That's what attracted me to Cahokia when I saw it. Their culture spread over 700 miles away into what is now the southern Piedmont of North Carolina. From: Bob Sullivan John, Cahokia Mounds has become a big archelogical dig since the early 70's. It's a huge Native American city from the early farming days. Regards, Bob S. Re: OT - Stayin' Alive (you'll smile at this!)
I thought I'd hate this -- figured it would be disrespecting Hayworth and Frank and Gene - but I loved it too... watching it I saw every one of those movies the clips are from multiple times, The first live action movie I saw was My Gal Sal staring Rita when I was 5 - I wanted to grow up to be her. that would have not been a good choice, as it turns out. And Gene Kelly - well I saw all his musicals from the 40's and 50's at the very least 10 times each... from this vid, the music grossed me out - so I turned off the sound. They did get the beat right very nicely, but not a fan of that song..
