Not the same group of Redwoods as last time and not as good, but maybe good enough for the calendar I am putting together for friends. (And I am pretty sure they are Redwoods.) Friend and I were sort of lost in Berkeley hills and came across a park with a grassy area and picnic tables. That is a very attractive portrait, and fills a unique position in the series. I still think that you must do something with the entire collection, Frank, either a calendar or a book or whatever. OT: Re: Any thoughts on what might cause this? - Update
Just a note if anyone is curious ... I followed up on Mark's suggestion that the video card may be causing the freeze-up. I found a new AGP GEForce 6200 card at the local CompUSA store. I know some of y'all don't like CompUSA/Tiger Direct, but it's a local store for me so anything I buy there I don't have the aggravation of keeping track of how much I spent so I can figure out North Carolina's stupid $#%@*# internet tax when I do my taxes next year. (Interesting ... spell-check doesn't like AGP or GEForce, but has no problem with $#%@*# ??) Anyway ... Checking the system requirements listed on the box, I learned I need a 300W power supply with 18Amp available on the +12vdc rail to use this card. I don't remember what the last power supply I installed is rated at, so before I actually buy the new video card, I'm going to have to shut everything down get inside the case again to find out if I'm going to have to install a new power supply before I can replace the video card. Don't have a lot of enthusiasm for that at the moment. I know I'll have to do it anyway when I replace the video card, but I'm not looking forward to doing it twice. On a positive note though ... because of the attention I've been giving this, I have noticed that since I upgraded the memory my monitor isn't doing that flashing/changing brightness level as often. In fact, it's almost quit doing it. I think this may be due to my having vacuumed out the case re-seating adapter cards during the upgrade. It also reinforces Mark's suggestion that the freeze-up may be caused by the video card. I have experienced only one freeze-up since my original post. I was commenting to a blog post, and it froze when I hit the space-bar at the end of a word. I remembered to try the windoze key (in the form of the Ctrl+Esc work-around), and as I expected it was no joy. The keyboard is completely locked out at that point, as is the mouse. Which projectors are better for Photos? (3LCD vs DLP)
Hi All, I am sure that some people on the list have the knowledge on this topic. For the purpose of presenting photo slideshows, which type of projectors are generally better: 3LCD or DLP? Criteria: accuracy of colors (preferably without too much of calibration), high brightness/contrast (so that the presentation can be done with the ambient light in the room. To better define the category, - I am looking at projectors with at least 2000-2500 lumens, and the price range is to stay within $1000-ish. Resolution: at least XGA (1024x768), possibly WXGA/HD-720 (1280x780/720). I've read a few websites with comparisons between the two types (3LCD and DLP). There are two major problems with those comparisons: 1. Most of those comparisons are several years old, and hence do not reflect the recent changes in both technologies. 2. They are shallow, biased [by the manufacturers of the specific type], or both. Your input, including references to good recent articles on the issue, is greatly appreciated! Re: Anybody have any experience purchasing from Buydig.com
Last time I bought from them in May and June of 2011 (spare battery for K-7, netbook memory, simple laptop). I had no problem with the orders or the store at that time or earlier. (I've been buying from them since 2005: bought from them P-DFA 100/2.8 macro in 2007, and if my memory doesn't deceive me, *ist DS was purchased from them, back in 2005.) I know that they improved their return policy 1-2 years ago, but did not have a chance/need to test it. The only problem with them I had was described in this earlier message to the list: http://www.mail-archive.com/pdml@pdml.net/msg598494.html (That battery, btw, has not been available from BuyDig for at least half an year now.) In short, I probably wouldn't be afraid to purchase from them. HTH, Igor On Thu, Dec 20, 2012 at 11:19 AM, P. J. Alling wrote: lately? Re: PESO - Redwood Quiet
Yes, Redwood Quiet would be a good choice. Many years ago my wife and our dog and I spent two weeks camping the northern CA redwoods as far north as Eureka and across to Shasta. The second night we were in Miles Standish State Park, nestled at the bottom of a huge stand of immense redwoods in our 12' Scotty camper. I didn't want to leave! The quiet and solitude was intense and I have never slept so good in my life. I would give anything to be able to go back there for a few more nights Walt On Thu, Dec 20, 2012 at 10:52 AM, eactiv...@aol.com wrote: One of the thing I like about Redwoods, it is usually very quiet standing under them, peaceful and calming. Re: Which projectors are better for Photos? (3LCD vs DLP)
Igor, my interest in projectors has been primarily for watching movies, but accurate colour and brightness are big issues for me. I own a 5 year old Dell XGA projector and I'm investigating a move up to a WXGA (720p). I can't recommend one type over another to you, but I can add to your woes: You need to take the screen into consideration. The screen plays a major role in the contrast and brightness, but also the colour accuracy. You also need to consider the source (PC, DVD player, etc.). This will affect the colour accuracy. When I recently swapped out my old DVD player for a Blu-Ray, all the colours went sideways. I did a rough recal by eye but the black point is still wrong and dark scenes in some movies look solarized now. Very annoying. I'd suggest that you should consider the possibility of needing calibration up front. Many of the monitor calibrators (colorimeters) can be used for front projection too. Re: Which projectors are better for Photos? (3LCD vs DLP)
I agree with Bruce. Our camera club has used three different projectors over the years and the screen seems to have as much or more effect than the projector. We calibrate with a ColorMunki and that helps, but in out current location we're stuck with a less than desirable screen supplied by the facility. The ColorMunki calibration goes a long way toward helping get correct colors, but there's only so much you can do with brightness and contrast when you have a bad screen. gs George Sinos gsi...@gmail.com www.georgesphotos.net plus.georgesinos.com On Thu, Dec 20, 2012 at 1:22 PM, Bruce Walker bruce.wal...@gmail.com wrote: Igor, my interest in projectors has been primarily for watching movies, but accurate colour and brightness are big issues for me. Re: Which projectors are better for Photos? (3LCD vs DLP)
Igor, With the same lightbulb, the DLPs deliver brighter images than do LCD because of the difference in technology, so it's usually hard to beat the DLP on brightness. However, in my experience, many DLPs have difficulties with yellow hues that goes beyond what can be rectified by calibration. LCD projectors will also need calibration, tho... :-) I think my advice would be to go for an LCD model that sports a sRGB mode as one of its preset colour modes, and prepare to spend a good bit of money on a decent canvas for it. Re: PESO - Redwood Quiet
Hi Marnie - I like the subject composition but feel its too dark overall. I ran it thru photoshop to see if it was my PC or what. I got a much more pleasing (to me) vibrant image by adjusting the white point in levels. The numerous tiny white spots (sky peeking thru I believe) in your image are producing a tiny bit of info at the far RH side - white point - of the histogram, I adjusted the white point significantly to the LH side to the point just shy of affecting the colors, and while the white points were brighter it produced a more attractive image - IMO - YMMV. Pentax? You know, I used to have a K1000. What ever happened to them?
I went over to Costco this afternoon to buy my 2013 supply of toilet tissue. They had a big mound of Nikon D600 kits (two lenses - 24-85 70-300 + some wireless plugin device) that caught my eye. I browsed around a bit there were other Nikons DSLRs, bridge cameras (those things that look like a DSLR, but don't have interchangeable lenses) point 'n shoots. Ditto for Canon Sony. It was pretty obvious Costco was selling them. A guy was restocking one the mounds of the Canon DSLR kits while I was there. No Pentax K-01, K-5 (any flavor), K-30 or WG-1 kits in the store. Nothing to suggest Pentax even exists anymore, much less that Costco actually sells them. I just don't understand how Pentax can expect to attract new users without cameras in the stores to attract buyers to the Pentax brand. I was really tempted by the D600 kit. American Express upped my credit limit last month. The only thing that really held me back was my determination not to make ANY major purchase before 2013. Plus I really do want to wait see if Pentax will introduce a camera I want to buy. I waited a long time for Pentax to finally introduce the *ist-D. I can probably wait a bit longer to see if they will ever introduce another camera I want to buy. Re: Pentax? You know, I used to have a K1000. What ever happened to them?
I was on a tear about this just last week after calling the local brick mortar shop where I bought my K-x only to get the same runaround I got when I called six months prior. The guy yammered on about the Pentax/Ricoh thing as though I was completely unaware of it. I then called Pentax customer service to see if there might be another shop within driving distance only to be told that I'd have to live near a BH or an Adorama to see a physical specimen. When I got my K-x, I'd narrowed the choice down to that and the Canon T2i. The K-x was cheaper and did everything I wanted a camera to do at the time (being my first new DSLR purchase), and I didn't want to wait while I saved up more cash for the T2i kit I wanted at Best Buy. So, I went to the camera shop and plunked down the dough. As I said in my series of gripes on Facebook, if I were just starting out in photography today, I'd be a Canon shooter. There's just no way in hell I would have bought a camera that I could hold in my hands and walk out the door with right there on the spot. The hell of it is, I keep seeing all these great deals on Canon and Nikon bodies in classifieds (e.g., a lightly used 7D for $850) and but for my complete lack of compatible glass, I'd be sorely tempted to change systems. I simply can't afford the investment. So, for the time being, barring some manner of financial windfall, I remain a Pentaxian. I love my cameras, but I sure wish my brand loyalty were being reciprocated with some degree of availability. -- Walt On 12/20/2012 4:27 PM, John Sessoms wrote: I went over to Costco this afternoon to buy my 2013 supply of toilet tissue. I can't disagree with you at all, Bob. I've never been disappointed with any of my Pentax purchases since I got my K-x. I meant it when I said I truly love my gear. It's just that it's difficult to evangelize on behalf of the brand when you're forced to tell people, Well, you can't get it in stores. You're just going to have to take my word for it: They're great cameras, and you won't find a better value. Just the other night, I was trying to push the K-30 on a guy who is an aspiring nature photographer who wants to take photos of waterfowl from a blind. I ticked off its advantages and the prices compared to similarly-appointed bodies from Canon and Nikon, but I just can't see an aspiring photographer taking the plunge on a mail-order camera without the benefit of someone giving him pointers on how the thing works. And I can't help thinking the brand suffers from this lack of availability at brick-and-mortar outlets, and that the brand can only stand so much suffering before it finally succumbs to market forces and a shrinking pool of devotees. Sure, it's a piddling thing to get worked into a lather over, but it does concern me. I like being a Pentax shooter, and I'd like to be one for good. I'm not concerned about full-frame bodies and bleeding-edge technology so much as being able to count on the brand's existence in the long term. I just don't see how they can win over neophytes and converts without at least some corporeal presence at the point of sale. -- Walt On 12/20/2012 5:33 PM, Bob Sullivan wrote: John (and Walt too), This forum is my substitute for holding a new Pentax in my hands. People ain't gonna buy Pentax if they don't know Pentax exists. And without Pentax being in the stores, for far too many people Pentax does *NOT* exist. Pentax needs more than just old fogies like us looking on Amazon for the best deal on last year's discontinued model. How much longer does it make sense for me to wait to see if Pentax is ever going to offer me a camera that comes close enough to what I want that I should wait however much longer it will actually take to get one into my hands. I'll make a little personal prediction here ... one year from today, either Pentax will have introduced a Full-frame DSLR that's within close enough shouting distance to the Nikon D600 or in 2014 I won't be shooting with Pentax any longer. Or at least they offer a camera that gives me a whole lot of what I want, say 90%. The only real drawback is that none of my current lenses will fit it. Replacing all that glass is going to be painful. But it's doable. If so, I'll miss Pentax. I can't begin to say how much that's going to hurt. I hope I'll be able to console myself with a camera that gives me what I want. Stop complaining and just switch already. Even if Pentax does release a full frame camera next year, it won't have enough megapixels, or the frame rate won't be high enough, or there won't be enough AF points, or AF will be too slow, or they won't have FF lenses with modern coatings, or any of a number of perceived faults that will give people a reason to bitch and moan about how far behind Pentax is. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions. -- David Parsons Photography http://www.davidparsonsphoto.com Aloha Photographer Photoblog http://alohaphotog.blogspot.com/ -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: December PUG now up. A Revision!
Just had a chance to look at December PUG. Wonderful gallery. Some outstanding photos in there... Not your fault, Pete. The submission was clearly marked 'Open Gallery'. My apologies. Anyway, a quick bit of html hacking has (hopefully) corrected the mistake, although anyone looking at the gallery for a second time might need to refresh a few pages to get the sequence of images correct (the older versions might still be in your browser's cache). http://pug.komkon.org/ -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
Re: Boris #58 - Jerusalem Bean
That's an interesting Bean, Boris. Framing is a bit tight--maybe better light? Re: Which projectors are better for Photos? (3LCD vs DLP)
Coincidently, I was just at the Epson web site browsing through the projectors, and read Epson recommends at least 2600 lumens. Just FYI. Cheers, Christine On Dec 20, 2012, at 12:00 PM, Igor Roshchin s...@komkon.org wrote: Hi All, I am sure that some people on the list have the knowledge on this topic.
