Wow, didn't know all those species still existed anywhere in Europe. Musta been
more than good luck that got you shots of all of them. The shot of the eagles

Bears in Finland

2013-09-23 Thread SV Hovland
Hi

I had a 5 day trip to Finland last week to photograph bears. It was together
with a group from Stavanger and we where 10 persons. We was picked up at the
airport in Kajaani and drove to the Russian border.

Before I left Stavanger, I crossed all my fingers for at lest one bear to see,
but we had up to six almost every evening and also saw wolves, wolverines and
eagles.

Cute birds but I suspect they might be a bit noisy in the mornings.

We had a blackbird building a nest in the lemon tree right next to our back
door, but it was destroyed by a wind storm before she finished it.

It is the same host I point to for my GESOs PESOs etc. But don't look at my

material. I have taken minimal advantage of maybe 10% of the design elements
that can be used to customize the look and feel and functionality of your own
site and make no claim to be a good representative of the capability there. But
I know the flexibility is there, I have been impressed all along with their
support, their reliability, and their continued addition of new features that
users can incorporate into their pages - or not - as they see fit.
(My site doesn't say "Zenfolio" in the address because one of the design
elements is the use of your own site name [if you pay beyond the basic level
membership] as a proxy so that e.g. I use is http://photos.stanhalpin.com)

It is hearby resolved

2013-09-23 Thread Larry Colen
It seems to me that increases in sensor resolution pass through various
phases:

1) Can out resolve the shooting ability of most photographers

2) Can out resolve the shooting abilty of a good photographer
taking care to get a sharp photo.

3) Can out resolve the nyquist frequency of the best lenses.
At which point anti-aliasing filters provide no benefit, and
with current image processing techniques we no longer gain
any benefit from higher resolution.

But what if we could increase sensor resolution several times
past that, to three, or even ten times the imaging capability
of the best lenses? What could we do then? Apart from filling
up memory cards and hard drives faster than I could even imagine
in my worst manic jag?

first of all, we'd probably want the sensor resolution to be
all the color sites that go into a pixel to fit within the nyquist
rate, rather than just the raw pixel sites, so we don't get bitten
by some pathologic example of trying to photograph an image of
a bayer filter or something.

We could also try going from the trichromat bayer filter to one
that has a finer resolution of color sensitivity, or even one that
has both "rods and cones", a site without a color filter that gives
raw luminance and no chroma information.

Then there are the possibilities in image processing. Would we be
better able to process away a lot more noise? Would we be able to
characterise the edge blur of a lens, and better correct for it,
bringing after the fact resolution up beyond the theoretic ideal?

At a certain point, lightfield work would become feasible. A lytro
that had the final resolution that matches current SLRs, would be
interesting. But what could be even more interesting would be if
such calcuations could correct for any aberrations and imperfections
in the lenses.

I think that we're several Moore cycles away in both sensor technology
and computational horsepower to make such things feasible, but they're
fun to think about.

Marshall. That was recently. Sometime just this past summer I think?

I remember it because I took the tour at Gibson Memphis on my way west
last January & they don't allow any photographs. Your gallery made me
jealous.

Cotty posted a couple things here when he got the guitar ... around
Christmas 2009 I think.

If I remember, he asked for advice about what amp to get along with it.
I thought he got a Tele, but he says it was a Strat.

Pentax is no longer a company, it is just a brand under Ricoh.

Therefore, Pentax cannot release anything. Ricoh can only release
something and call it a Pentax.

That means that Pentax cannot release a full frame camera, and
therefore Cotty's hat is safe.

Hmmm. That's a loophole that we need to find a way of closing...

Thanks Bruce, Paul & Jack.

No - it's an interesting tree hollow. Apart from the galahs, it's
been checked out by Kookaburras, Eastern Rosellas and even a pair of
wood ducks. The galahs have been returning every day or so but they
have made no attempt to move in. The hollow certainly seems big
enough - both birds have been inside at the same time - but there must
be something unsuitable about it. Maybe it gets too wet. Or the
rent's too high...

I considered going in with the adjustment brush, but decided that what I
really needed was to just do something quick and go to bed. If it weren't
for the rock on the beach, just running across the horizon might have been
fairly easy.

I may try that when I get a chance.

I could also try taking my three bracketed exposures and running them through
HDR. It seems to me, that the lightroom/photoshop HDR works on the processed

There are still some kinks, and I wrote to support that they at least
need a clear tutorial or FAQ or something to explain how to best use

Thank you, Bruce.

I didn't have my flash with me, but I guess it's just as well. I really
love the fact that I can get relatively clean images at ISO 3200 with
the K-5, and that allows me to get fairly impromptu shots in low light
without a lot of fiddling.

I had a paid profile on 500px for a year thinking that it was an

found they are no better than Flickr in many ways and without any of

Any idea where you might get a Coolscan IV ED repaired? I don't think
Nikon will do it anymore.

I keep getting an error message from mine that it's not properly aligned
or something like that (been a while since I used it & I don't feel like
going into the other room just now to fire it up to see what the exact
error is).

Despite the error message it still works, so I second Godfrey's
recommendation.

I wouldn't trade mine for anything (... well, unless I should happen to
come across a Nikon Super Coolscan 9000 ED I can afford).

it's a one time effort, and you just need it done, hire someone else
to do it right ... It's a better use of the $200-500 a good scanner
will cost you.

- If you have a modest amount to scan, are not concerned about
ultimate quality but want excellent results, and want to get it done
reasonably quickly, invest in a good used macro lens and light box,
do it with your camera. It doesn't take too much to do an excellent
job, and you can use the lens for other things as well.

- if you're going to be doing this a lot, want the best quality, and
are willing to put in the time for learning etc, buy the best film
scanner (new or used) and software to drive it that you can afford.

I've had lots of flatbed scanners, including the Epson V700. None
scan 35mm slides particularly well IMO compared to the used Nikon
Coolscan IV I bought in 2006 for $235.

I have an Epson Perfection flat bed kicking around somewhere. But it is

Not worth debating as it is completely beside the point of my statements about
quality photos.

Of course there are times when you need more pixels, just like in film days
there were certainly times when 35mm film was inadequate. If your subject and
print requirements demand it, stop wasting time with APS-C and move up the
ladder. That's why I have three digital capture formats and cameras from 5 to
18 Mpixels at my disposal. Next up would be a digital back for the Hasselblad,
but I haven't seen the need yet.

You're probably right. The conversion to AF SLRs was difficult for most
manufacturers. Canon was roundly despised by their user base for doing the
right thing and obsoleting the FL/FD mount in favor of the EOS mount,
which was specifically designed for the future AF and electronic control
models. It was/is very successful even today as it is a very large
diameter bayonet flange on a relatively short mount register, allowing a
smooth conversion to digital capture. Nikon and everyone else without a
purpose designed mount flange have struggled a bit.

Ricoh made an excellent line of SLRs. We used to buy them for the student
photo staff/camera club when I was in high school as they were less
expensive than Pentax and seemed to need service much less often in the
hands of a bunch of high school kids.

Re: Slide Scanner?

2013-09-23 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
This subject come up frequently on various lists and forums. As a summary:

- If you have a lot to scan, use a service to get it done. Scanning is an art
form in itself and has a significant learning curve. If it's a one time effort,
and you just need it done, hire someone else to do it right ... It's a better
use of the $200-500 a good scanner will cost you.

- If you have a modest amount to scan, are not concerned about ultimate quality
but want excellent results, and want to get it done reasonably quickly, invest
in a good used macro lens and light box, do it with your camera. It doesn't
take too much to do an excellent job, and you can use the lens for other things
as well.

- if you're going to be doing this a lot, want the best quality, and are
willing to put in the time for learning etc, buy the best film scanner (new or
used) and software to drive it that you can afford.

I've had lots of flatbed scanners, including the Epson V700. None scan 35mm
slides particularly well IMO compared to the used Nikon Coolscan IV I bought in
2006 for $235.

PESO: Mr. Moore and my Yamaha

2013-09-23 Thread Walt
I'm sure I've shared at least one photo of this man here before, but he
happens to be one of my favorite subjects and someone for whom I have
undying personal admiration. His name is Jimmy Moore, and he's a Korean
War-era Army veteran. He just missed deployment when they deactivated
his division, the 11th Airborne, which he signed up for simply because
they were training at Ft. Campbell at the time, which would allow him to
drive back home to his favorite party town, a.k.a. Cairo, IL. He's 80
years old and still as strong as an ox.

http://www.flickriver.com/photos/walt_gilbert/9901114106/#large
K-5, FA 50/1.7, 1/80, ISO 3200, f/2.8

He'll probably be around quite a while longer, but when he does
eventually go, I'll be glad I have this photo to give to his family.

Comments are, as always, welcome.

Slide Scanner?

Been thinking about family photos from trips when I was a kid. They were
all 35mm slides, and/or stereo realist slides (which, if you chop in half,
makes a 35mm slide).

Really should convert them all into digital. They are most of the family
pictures I have.

I have an Epson Perfection flat bed kicking around somewhere. But it is
pretty old now, so figured maybe there are newer ones now that would do a

No, I mean proportion as in "a relationship between things or parts of

Maybe some figure they never print above size D x D, or display an
image larger than P x P. That's fine maybe they don't *need* it.

Image capture is the start of the process. To belittle the idea that
increased resolution is not a desirable thing is akin to saying you're
quite willing to throwaway image information that was there for the
taking. The principle is start out with the best achievable first gen
image and the end result will be better as well.

There's tradeoffs of course in price, weight, flexibility, and each
 person is different.

I have a lot of 6MP captures I like too, but if I wanted to display or
print large I'd be far happier to have captured them at 20, 24, or
 36MP.

I think you mean magnitude, not proportion. I agree: Answering the "what looks
good over the couch?" (or in your case fireplace) generally requires more size.
Which is why I have a 16x35 inch canvas wrap over the sofa in the living room.
Looks lovely ... it's a crop on a 12 Mpixel frame from the GXR. Nobody's walked
up to it with a magnifying glass yet and asked why it didn't have more detail.

Of course, over a set of 7 photos, 8x8 inch matted and framed to 13x13 inch,
looks pretty nice in the bedroom too and covers a similar amount of wall space.
And 49 4.25x3.5" images in small frames could make an impressive display
covering most of my office wall if I so chose... ;-)

Quality aside, proportion is important to your enjoyment of an image.
As wonderful as your 4.25x3.5" image may be, it's going to look out of
place and hard to view mounted above my fireplace. But my 36x24"
landscape is going to look just fine there (unless it's too soft or

locate your small and intimate image in a spot in keeping with its

In the same way an architect wouldn't design a single small bathroom

Re: PESO Repurposed

2013-09-23 Thread Bruce Walker
