Re: You didn't hear it from me...

2013-09-23 Thread Zos Xavius
You are correct, and with diffraction I think that 24-30mp is
approaching the limits of what aps-c can resolve. I know the
theoretical ceiling is much higher, but realistically we are reaching
the limits of current lenses. Look at the D800 for instance. So 18%
more resolution. I welcome that. Nearly 20% larger is still a sizable
increase IMO.

On Mon, Sep 23, 2013 at 1:28 AM, P.J. Alling webstertwenty...@gmail.com wrote:
Linear resolution is what counts with a 20mp sensor the linear resolution is

bit more than 28mp. The pixels are getting pretty small at that point, on
an APS-C sensor and the laws of physics that make high ISO with low noise
problematic in small sensor cameras begin to rear their ugly heads.

Ricoh used to make a line of second string K mount SLRs, prior to
that they made a line of second string m42 mount SLRs, and apparently
 they
marketed a Nikon mount SLR, made by Mamiym. They put some pretty nice
technology into them, often the K mount bodies seemed to have somewhat
better tech and more features than Pentax, and they were pretty nice
cameras, but there was always something off about their ergonomics.

Back when Pentax still had a presence in most Cameras stores, (not
that long ago actually), one of the best local camera stores in the area
went out of business, (they had one of my LXen in for repair, and I was
worried about getting it back, I did eventually), at their going out of
business sale they had a used Ricoh, I forget the model number, it
 resembled
a Pentax A3 but included a ME Super style button system for setting
 manual
shutter speeds IIRC. This particular camera seemed to be pristine
 condition
and the price was certainly right, I was seriously considering buying
 it as
a body to carry where I didn't want to risk a LX or MX, when one of the
buttons simply fell off. The salesman who I knew, (it wasn't a paid
liquidator running the sale), said, That seems to happen a lot, it just
snaps back on. I decided to take a pass.

Ricoh abandoned the SLR market sometime in the 90's. I don't
remember when, exactly. I don't remember any big announcement, such as
 when
Yashica stopped making cameras, Ricoh just sort of stopped, making SLRs.

 I had a Ricoh XR-2 in the 1970s/80s. It may have been a second-string
brand but it was an excellent camera - functionally equivalent to the ME
Super in a slightly larger body and without the push buttons. Sadly, it
 was
stolen in the mid 80s but, on the positive side, the theft brought me
 back
 to Pentax :-)

I think Ricoh decided not to get involved in the SLR autofocus race.
They continued to make a few manual focus SLRs until the mid 90s before
 pulling the plug.

You're probably right. The conversion to AF SLRs was difficult for most
manufacturers. Canon was roundly despised by their user base for doing the
right thing and obsoleting the FL/FD mount in favor of the EOS mount,
 which
was specifically designed for the future AF and electronic control models.
It was/is very successful even today as it is a very large diameter
 bayonet
flange on a relatively short mount register, allowing a smooth conversion
 to
digital capture. Nikon and everyone else without a purpose designed mount
 flange have struggled a bit.

Ricoh made an excellent line of SLRs. We used to buy them for the
student photo staff/camera club when I was in high school as they were
 less
expensive than Pentax and seemed to need service much less often in the
hands of a bunch of high school kids.

Yet another reason I love my K-5s

Here is a photo of the party, taken while I was walking to it:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/9892149225/

It is pretty much straight out of the camera. A bit rough, but for
ISO 10,000, it's not bad. There's a bit of clipping in the highlights,
and the background is pretty much lost.

On a lark, I thought I'd see if I could pull a bit of the background out.
In the original version, you can nearly see seafoam.
So, even with my very meager lightroom skills, this is what I was
able to get out of the shot.

The background is noisy, but if you look you can see the waves, and the
big rock on the beach.

Quality aside, proportion is important to your enjoyment of an image.
As wonderful as your 4.25x3.5 image may be, it's going to look out of
place and hard to view mounted above my fireplace. But my 36x24
landscape is going to look just fine there (unless it's too soft or
pixellated due to having been taken on a low rez camera). I would
locate your small and intimate image in a spot in keeping with its
size and viewing requirement.

Of course, over a set of 7 photos, 8x8 inch matted and framed to 13x13 inch,

And 49 4.25x3.5 images in small frames could make an impressive display

Of course, over a set of 7 photos, 8x8 inch matted and framed to 13x13 inch,
looks pretty nice in the bedroom too and covers a similar amount of wall
space. And 49 4.25x3.5 images in small frames could make an impressive
display covering most of my office wall if I so chose... ;-)

In the same way an architect wouldn't design a single small bathroom
 window for a livingroom wall.

I never said that more resolution was a bad thing. I said it was no longer
the limiting factor in the quality of a photograph.

What is the quality of a photograph? Simple: a quality photograph captures
your mind and holds you. It expresses something poignant, beautiful,
interesting, etc. There's a baseline of technical quality required to
achieve that, as well as a baseline of aesthetic impact.

I need more pixels for printing big is such a shill. I don't find big
photographs have any more quality than small ones. In most cases, they have
less, but they impress just because they're BIG. Bloated, IMO. I very
rarely print larger than what fits on a 13x19 piece of paper, and most
commonly print in the 6x8 inch range.

My most recent project was 52 prints, 4.25x3.50 inches in size with an
image area 3x3 inch. Showed it at a group exhibition of fellow
photographers ... It won three awards against the vast and gorgeous
competition prints that others submitted. Yeah, I make exhibition prints up
to 24x30 too, but rarely. I find them only occasionally interesting.

Capturing gesture, expression, emotion ... that's what quality photographs
 do. Not cover walls...

Here's where I coming from on this. To say one's images wouldn't or
couldn't benefit from increased resolution is like saying they
couldn't benefit by using a finer grained film (in the day) or a
 higher quality lens.

Maybe some figure they never print above size D x D, or display an
image larger than P x P. That's fine maybe they don't *need* it.

Image capture is the start of the process. To belittle the idea that
increased resolution is not a desirable thing is akin to saying you're
quite willing to throwaway image information that was there for the
taking. The principle is start out with the best achievable first gen
image and the end result will be better as well.

There's tradeoffs of course in price, weight, flexibility, and each
 person is different.

I have a lot of 6MP captures I like too, but if I wanted to display or
print large I'd be far happier to have captured them at 20, 24, or
 36MP.

Been thinking about family photos from trips when I was a kid. They were
all 35mm slides, and/or stereo realist slides (which, if you chop in half,

PESO: Mr. Moore and my Yamaha

2013-09-23 Thread Walt
I'm sure I've shared at least one photo of this man here before, but he
happens to be one of my favorite subjects and someone for whom I have
undying personal admiration. His name is Jimmy Moore, and he's a Korean
War-era Army veteran. He just missed deployment when they deactivated
his division, the 11th Airborne, which he signed up for simply because
they were training at Ft. Campbell at the time, which would allow him to
drive back home to his favorite party town, a.k.a. Cairo, IL. He's 80
years old and still as strong as an ox.

He'll probably be around quite a while longer, but when he does
eventually go, I'll be glad I have this photo to give to his family.

Comments are, as always, welcome.

Re: Slide Scanner?

2013-09-23 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
This subject come up frequently on various lists and forums. As a summary:

- If you have a lot to scan, use a service to get it done. Scanning is an art
form in itself and has a significant learning curve. If it's a one time effort,
and you just need it done, hire someone else to do it right ... It's a better
use of the $200-500 a good scanner will cost you.

- If you have a modest amount to scan, are not concerned about ultimate quality
but want excellent results, and want to get it done reasonably quickly, invest
in a good used macro lens and light box, do it with your camera. It doesn't
take too much to do an excellent job, and you can use the lens for other things
as well.

- if you're going to be doing this a lot, want the best quality, and are
willing to put in the time for learning etc, buy the best film scanner (new or
used) and software to drive it that you can afford.

I've had lots of flatbed scanners, including the Epson V700. None scan 35mm
slides particularly well IMO compared to the used Nikon Coolscan IV I bought in
2006 for $235.

technology into them, often the K mount bodies seemed to have somewhat
better tech and more features than Pentax, and they were pretty nice
cameras, but there was always something off about their ergonomics.

Back when Pentax still had a presence in most Cameras stores, (not that
long ago actually), one of the best local camera stores in the area went
out of business, (they had one of my LXen in for repair, and I was
worried about getting it back, I did eventually), at their going out of
business sale they had a used Ricoh, I forget the model number, it
resembled a Pentax A3 but included a ME Super style button system for
setting manual shutter speeds IIRC. This particular camera seemed to be
pristine condition and the price was certainly right, I was seriously
considering buying it as a body to carry where I didn't want to risk a
LX or MX, when one of the buttons simply fell off. The salesman who I
knew, (it wasn't a paid liquidator running the sale), said, That seems
to happen a lot, it just snaps back on. I decided to take a pass.

Ricoh abandoned the SLR market sometime in the 90's. I don't remember
when, exactly. I don't remember any big announcement, such as when
Yashica stopped making cameras, Ricoh just sort of stopped, making SLRs.

 I had a Ricoh XR-2 in the 1970s/80s. It may have been a second-string
brand but it was an excellent camera - functionally equivalent to the ME
Super in a slightly larger body and without the push buttons. Sadly, it
was stolen in the mid 80s but, on the positive side, the theft brought me
 back to Pentax :-)

I think Ricoh decided not to get involved in the SLR autofocus race.
They continued to make a few manual focus SLRs until the mid 90s before
 pulling the plug.

You're probably right. The conversion to AF SLRs was difficult for most
manufacturers. Canon was roundly despised by their user base for doing the
right thing and obsoleting the FL/FD mount in favor of the EOS mount,
which was specifically designed for the future AF and electronic control
models. It was/is very successful even today as it is a very large
diameter bayonet flange on a relatively short mount register, allowing a
smooth conversion to digital capture. Nikon and everyone else without a
purpose designed mount flange have struggled a bit.

Ricoh made an excellent line of SLRs. We used to buy them for the student
photo staff/camera club when I was in high school as they were less
expensive than Pentax and seemed to need service much less often in the
hands of a bunch of high school kids.

IMO, we passed the point a long, long time ago (around 5-10 Mpixel

I am still perfectly happy and confident shooting with my lovely old 2003

Re: Slide Scanner?

Any idea where you might get a Coolscan IV ED repaired? I don't think
Nikon will do it anymore.

I keep getting an error message from mine that it's not properly aligned
or something like that (been a while since I used it I don't feel like
going into the other room just now to fire it up to see what the exact
error is).

Despite the error message it still works, so I second Godfrey's
recommendation.

I wouldn't trade mine for anything (... well, unless I should happen to
come across a Nikon Super Coolscan 9000 ED I can afford).

to do it right ... It's a better use of the $200-500 a good scanner
will cost you.

- If you have a modest amount to scan, are not concerned about
ultimate quality but want excellent results, and want to get it done
reasonably quickly, invest in a good used macro lens and light box,
do it with your camera. It doesn't take too much to do an excellent
job, and you can use the lens for other things as well.

- if you're going to be doing this a lot, want the best quality, and
are willing to put in the time for learning etc, buy the best film
scanner (new or used) and software to drive it that you can afford.

I've had lots of flatbed scanners, including the Epson V700. None
scan 35mm slides particularly well IMO compared to the used Nikon
Coolscan IV I bought in 2006 for $235.

love the fact that I can get relatively clean images at ISO 3200 with
the K-5, and that allows me to get fairly impromptu shots in low light
without a lot of fiddling.

Therefore, Pentax cannot release anything. Ricoh can only release

from all over the country (and a few from outside the country as well).

These two websites will point you to events of that size pretty much
every weekend:

There were three blues and fusion dance events on Saturday night.

2 - Try this: Keep the high contrast of the original's foreground unchanged
then open up just the sky on the horizon.

I considered going in with the adjustment brush, but decided that what I
really needed was to just do something quick and go to bed. If it weren't
for the rock on the beach, just running across the horizon might have been
fairly easy.

I may try that when I get a chance.

I could also try taking my three bracketed exposures and running them through
HDR. It seems to me, that the lightroom/photoshop HDR works on the processed
image, not the raw data.

No - it's an interesting tree hollow. Apart from the galahs, it's
been checked out by Kookaburras, Eastern Rosellas and even a pair of
wood ducks. The galahs have been returning every day or so but they

Re: You didn't hear it from me...

2013-09-23 Thread John

No, I remember the gallery you posted from your factory visit at
Marshall. That was recently. Sometime just this past summer I think?

I remember it because I took the tour at Gibson Memphis on my way west
last January they don't allow any photographs. Your gallery made me
jealous.

Cotty posted a couple things here when he got the guitar ... around
Christmas 2009 I think.

If I remember, he asked for advice about what amp to get along with it.
I thought he got a Tele, but he says it was a Strat.

You may be thinking of me. Not new though; I bought it in 1976, Here
it is with the Marshal '62 Bluesbreaker amp I recently won in a
charity raffle:

Just checked out the Exhibition title generator and got this:
Extravagant Dilettantes: Media Art and Dilettantism.

I think Bill's right. Could very well be an interesting gallery!

Brian, lots to like in the list. I like Ken's suggestions as well.

I say you go for it Brian and pick.

OK. Here we go - in no particular order and not yet set in stone. So,
feel free to criticize:

Open Gallery
Feathered Friends
Synchronicity
Transport
Still Life
Hairy
Favourites (this is Ken's Best of my best? - all time)
Cold
Decrepit
Motion
Big
Random Exhibition Title Generator

A few people liked the idea of the Random Exhibition Title Generator.
I'm not sure about it. It could be a theme that sounds good but might
result in few submissions. We shall see.

So how does the RETG theme work? You generate the theme at some later
date? Or we generate a theme and make a photo to match?

Just can't resist stirring up shit can you?

Pentax is no longer a company, it is just a brand under Ricoh.

Therefore, Pentax cannot release anything. Ricoh can only release
something and call it a Pentax.

That means that Pentax cannot release a full frame camera, and
therefore Cotty's hat is safe.

I wouldn't know. I've never tried to resist stirring shit.
