Re: colored strobes

2014-04-02 Thread Boris Liberman
Larry, this is multi-system flash (it has a set of switches on the
back that determine which protocol it would use) that support TTL (not
P-TTL) and has its own light meter so that it can work autonomously as
far as impulse power goes. It has two settings (IIRC) that determine
the auto mode operation. Also it has set of color filters. It swivels
and tilts. Before sending it to Stan, I checked it and the flash
fired.

I don't remember exactly, but I used it with K10D and/or K-7. I think
that when I got K-5, I already had Metz SCA system flash that was
replaced with Metz AF 50-1 not long ago. It is therefore logical to
assume that in terms of discharge current/voltage it is safe for
modern Pentax cameras.

Oh, and by the way, the above is for general consumption :-).

I don't know if the expiration date has any effect and indeed increases

Also, in principle, my understanding is that the old cartridge may have
higher probability for the the jet to get plugged with something (dry
pigment?). That happened to some of my cartridges, especially after a
long break without printing. It goes away if you go through one or a few
cleaning cycles (done via the utility in the printer driver), but you
waste some considerable amount of ink in the process.

At the same time, I just used a cartridge that was about 1 year beyond
the expiration date, and had no problem with it. And some of my

No problem so far.

I can't speak to whether the cartridge will work OK or not.

But if you request a refund for an inexpensive product like this,
stating that it was defective (expired), the odds are good that Amazon
or the third-party seller will just refund your money without having
you send it back. They don't want the hassle or expense of dealing
with the return, either.

Re: PESO: SPRING ! (With Link this time)

2014-04-02 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Thanks, Bruce, Gerrit, Bob, Don and Jack.

You are right, Bruce, In my desperation to get a shot that had some
color and blossoms that filled the frame, I overdid it
I wanted a vision of spring in the worst way, and I got it.

This was the first day the crocus started to bloom. It was almost
dusk by the time I noticed them and grabbed the camera. The flowers
are small, and only a couple if inches in height, and it was wet and
muddy on the ground, so I had a bit of trouble maneuvering into a
position to look through the viewfinder at all. I took most at f/2,
to get decent shutter speed and blur the crap all around the flowers.
I took some at f/8, but between the slower shutter speed, the breeze
and my shaky hands, those are noticeably less sharp.

Even then, the flowers looked tiny and dull, so I cropped the hell out
of this one, and really pumped it up in P/S to make it look more
"springlike." As you correctly note, the result is a piece of crap
technically, but I got the spring colors I wanted, green and blue and
yellow and orange.

been casually following your blog (as i did before i joined PDML), so i knew
you had gone Fuji and left Google

But... we have a cabin, and at the cabin you don’t carry cameras
around, you sit on the deck with a cool beverage on a comfy chair,
admiring the view. So my K-5 and 50-135 and ancient Tokina 400 get
propped up on knees and railings and take pix like these:
http://www.tbray.org/pdml/sspatc/

enjoy the still life shots - particularly roots and orange cedar, plus a
renewal of my mostly long-distance relationship with your region; thanks for
making the photos big - it is a better experience

The X-cameras and Fujinon X-lenses are not actually better than any
particular Pentax, they’re just smaller and lighter.

that's a useful way to boil it down; i am still cautious about Fuji's
image-quality per dollar; i had a decision to make with the recent loss of my
K-5, and was considering again all the MILCs; i am really attracted to small
and light, but replacing my three small primes plus a long macro would be quite
expensive, especially since my Pentax glass has been bargain-hunted; i'm also
cautious about the manual focus experience - focus-by-wire and EVF lag are
cons, but focus peaking and the ability to magnify the target area are plusses

so i stuck with the devil i knew

Dan,
Glad to see those crocus again, very pretty (especially w/link). :-)
We've had some snow drops on the warm south side of the house.
I'll have to check for snow crocus at the old house.
Finally the snow is gone!

I should explore another camera system like this some day, when budget
allows. I don't carry my camera enough I admit. But I'm quite okay
with the K-3/16-50 kit even at crowded public events -- it's way
smaller and lighter than the functionally equiv Canikon would be.

Very good to see, Dan. None of ours are up yet, and my wife was out
the last couple of days tidying leaves off the garden and reports that
the tips of them are showing.

Were you shooting wide-open with the 50/1.8? I'm guessing that you
used the Lightroom edge-detect feature to sharpen these and I am
distracted by sharpening noise along all the in-focus edges; its
unfortunately obvious.
