That's cool. We've had quite a few things like that appear after all the
demolitions in town. Mostly old signs.

Ah, well if you've already got 20mm covered then you are looking
wider. I'd say the Samyang/Bower is a no-brainer. My son-in-law (the
Canon shooter) did some tests and showed that it out-performed the
Canon 14mm L. (More than one photog has come to that conclusion, if
you Google it). I agree with you on the manual focus + DOF of the
Samyang.

PS.. Adorama has all flavors of that lens for $249 right now:

I've thought about that too, but I've kind of got 20mm covered with the
FA 20-35mm it really is a very nice lens and though it's a bit bulkier

very little distortion. On APS-C it's not very wide, really, which is

Actually the wrong way is for the bicycles and the one way streets are
at right angles - note the 7th and 2nd street signs, too.. it's our mini
ground zero. The wrong way sign for me is a comment on the sad
situation - but , in fact, the bike path , like Second avenue, is
suppose to be a one way path in the same direction - it is often
disregarded and that is particularly hazardous on these crowded city

PESO - rooms with a view

after the fire in the East Village in NY at 7th St and 2nd, The people
in one of the adjoining buildings now have window with a view of the
street instead of a breezeway and other's windows. I took this 21 days
after the event. The apartments are supposed to be inhabitable,
according to authorities, but the people that live there are not moving
back in (yet) Those apartments are still filled with foul aromas and
people going back to retrieve things they need while staying with
friends are getting sick just for being in their apartments for less
than an hour... it's really awful - as they landlord is expecting them
to pay rent.

(that's my paraphrasing of an article in a local paper, but I can tell
you that the places across the street whose doors were shut for several
days after the fire still smelled of smoke once they opened again for
several more days.)

That would also minimize the thingy in the background over her left

Re: K-50 + primes: Crazy good deal.

2015-04-28 Thread P.J. Alling
I don't think that's right Darren, one of the knocks on the K20D was
that the K200D had much better low light performance based on it's
supposed Sony sensor.

The APS-C sensor in the K20D and K-7 were the first large imaging
sensors made by Samsung,(which was CMOS BTW), while the K200D basically
got somewhat improved and simplified guts inherited from the K10D which
had a Sony CCD.

What the K200D was essentially was a K10D in a K100D Super body.

All the earliest Pentax digitals used Sony sensors: ist-D, ist-DS,
ist-DS2, ist-DL, ist-DL2, K-10D, K200D, K2000, K-m, K-100D, K-110D

Only the K-20D and K-7 used Samsung sensors.

K200D inherited the Sony CCD from the K10D. The K20D was the first
with a Samsung sensor, and IIRC the K7 was the last. Before and after
that it was Sony.

Yes, there were Pentax DSLRs with Samsung sensors, but most of them
have been Sony, including the *ist D (Pentax's first DSLR). So the
phrase "pre-Sony sensor days" doesn't make a lot of sense. Hence
Mark's joke about film.

2015-04-28 Thread P.J. Alling
I think you're a little off there a non-Sony sensor would be K20D/K-7
everything else that Pentax built as far as DSLRs had Sony sensors. B&H
has the same types of deals and on the "standard kit" type lenses, and
the same base price on the Black K-50, most of the color combinations
seem to be no longer available so we may be seeing the practical end of
the K-50 as a product. 16mp sensor DSLRs are so 2013...

PESO Stella

2015-04-28 Thread Larry Colen
Stella D'Oro is one of the singers for the New Flamingo Swing Orchestra.
They played for our local lindy hop venue last night.

I think that this shot of her is my favorite from the set:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/17298330745/in/set-72157649908555623

When I got there last night, there was someone taking photos using a
flash. As a dancer, I got to truly appreciate why so many dancers hate
it when photographers use flash. To make things worse, he had it on his
camera, pointing straight up. Sure, it's nice to get bounce rather than
direct light, but when you're in a dim room bouncing it off the ceiling
means that you have to light up the whole room just to photograph
someone a few feet in front of you.

A short while later, a couple a short distance from me was posing for
him and he turned his camera to get a vertical format shot of them. He
was oblivious to the fact that his speedlight was now pointing directly
in the faces of another couple a few feet to his left. Fortunately, he
repositioned himself before taking the shot.

After that song, I went over to chat with him, and suggest that he
should probably be more aware of where he was pointing his flash. I
guess I could have been a little more diplomatic about it, because he
didn't respond very positively to my suggestions. He did, however,
inform me that the room was too dark to photograph in without a flash.
Granted, I think his camera was a Canon, so for him it might have been.
