Welcome Dale,

I don’t know if you’ve spent time on other online photo discussion fora, the
good news is that PDML seems to be one of the most technically clueful groups
of photographers in an on line forum. The bad news is, that the other ones are
even worse.

If you ask for either technical or artistic advice, you will get some
excellent, well informed answers. You’ll also get a lot of pure, impure and
tainted bollocks for advice. And puns, you’ll get those also.

You’ve undoubtedly seen comments about the annual, do pick up a copy. The first
one came out shortly after I joined the list and my copy was an excellent
lesson in the art of humility.

Mark, there are generally two cases. One is to increase the contrast between
the stone and the (usually green) background - orange or red to give a light
colored stone a darker background, cyan or green to give a dark colored stone a
lighter background. The other is to minimize the appearance of mold, algae or
lichen on the stone. I've already picked the small graveyard where I will first
practice. Most of the stones there have patches of an orange lichen on them, so
I will try shooting in B through #16 and #21 filters.

What I have in hand is either old Kodacolor prints or snaps with my old 3.3

has been in New England where I grew up (I have lived in Virginia for the last

but there are stones in the oldest local cemeteries here in southwest VA that
will present significant challenges. Since I joined the Association for

I do still use Kodak Photo-Flo 200, but not in a darkroom. Cleaning of

2) using nothing stronger than a non-ionic cleaner such as Photo-Flo.

Welcome to the group.

My wife is deep into genealogy and we've been going on genealogical
vacations over the past few years - traipsing through small towns and
cemeteries in New England and the midwest. They are fun trips. I shoot
film and digital and usually use B film in cemeteries - Tri-X pushed
to 1600 is a favorite. I don't document info but focus on the graphics
in the stones themselves. Digital infrared and color (especially in the
fall) also come into play.

I'd be very interested in hearing how you use colored filters on the K70
for digital B

I noticed the light fall-off even in my quick test shots. But that's
pretty easily corrected in software now (and goes away when stopping
down). The barrel distortion at 28mm is also noticeable but can be
corrected easily now. The only other WR lens I have is my faithful

Ain't that the truth?

My main camera bag is a Domke F1, procured at a fantastic discount
when the camera shop I worked at in Pittsburgh went out of business.

I have a separate bag for my medium format kit.

And a small sling bag for use when I'm traveling by bicycle.

And a Lowepro backpack for transporting serious amounts of kit.

And a small waist pack for hiking.

Plus two other bags of intermediate size.

My go-to camera bag for travel is actually a freebie messenger bag I
got at a conference a few years ago. It holds a thin laptop (or a
tablet) and a body plus a couple of lenses. It doesn't look like a
camera bag. It doesn't look "touristy". And it's held closed by two
quick-release buckles plus two Velcro strips, so it's a tricky target
for pickpockets. It's falling to bits but it's probably my most used
option in cities.

I've been very pleased with the DFA 28-105. It's sharp at all focal
lengths, has great color rendition, WR (in fact - the only WR lens I
own), light weight, and (for me) the 28-105 zoom range is preferable to
24-70. Aside from it being slow the only quibble I have is the light
fall off which can be significant, but which is not really an issue in
most shots. It was problematic in some winter snow / fog images I was
working with a couple months ago, but fairly easy to correct in
Photoshop. Enjoy it!

Mark Roberts wrote:

I received my new DFA 28-105 today, getting my first weather-sealed

just a few quick test shots to insure it doesn't suffer from any major
alignment/decentering issues. But I have to say the build quality
seems impressive for such a budget (by FF standards) lens. Focusing is
fast and virtually silent. And though I'd certainly like a faster lens
(f/5.6 at 105mm is a tad disappointing) the benefit in terms of size
is remarkable. It's surprisingly compact.

I hope to get in a few test photos tomorrow (not that the semester is
over).

A constant-aperture f/4.0 would be nice, but the penalty in size,
weight and price would probably be considerable.

DFA 28-105 - first impressions

2018-05-02 Thread Mark Roberts
I received my new DFA 28-105 today, getting my first weather-sealed
full-frame lens in preparation for my upcoming adventure in Yorkshire,
Durham and Northumberland. I haven't given it a proper tryout yet -
just a few quick test shots to insure it doesn't suffer from any major
alignment/decentering issues.

I hope to get in a few test photos tomorrow (not that the semester is
over).

Yes, clarity counts. I sent them to Audubon. I’m sure they have better photos,
but they’re very interested in “where and when,” particularly at migration time.

Hi Dale,
Welcome to the PDML. I’m a 70-year-old codger who worked with filters and a
darkroom for more than 30 years. They’d have to hog tie me and beat me to go
back to that now. Rendering BW during RAW conversion allows control of every
color. Lot’s of fun too. Speaking of fun, we have a heck of a good time here.
Once in a while we even talk about photography!

Welcome, ditto what Alan said :-)  Your'e just a kidif you are in your
50's :-)

I always shot with colored filters when I was still attached at the hip
to my LX and KX bodies when shooting BW.  Now I've gotten used to
shooting raw+jpg and switching to BW in Photoshop elements ...
converting to BW in post is pretty satisfying...

WHen I first switched to digital I -did- shoot bw in camera (I have a
K-5 now but started with ist D.) butfound it much easier to not switch
in camera
between color and BW after finding I had taken shots in BW that I meant
to shoot in color - so shooting in color and not switching settings in the

field was safer..

Look forward to seeing some of your work

I think this is a strong gallery, with many interesting and enjoyable
images.

My favorite is "Spectatin'" by Paul Stenquist. It has pleasing colors and
a strong composition that draws the eye into the scene. There is an
incredible amount of interesting details. I think that the people in the
foreground, especially the women and the girl in and in front of the
pickup, really elevate it from a beautiful scene to a compelling
documentary photograph.

I also particularly admire Follow the Yellow Marking by Henk Terhell,
Pilgrims by Jostein Øksne, and Country Hangout by Jan van Wijk.

Is that right?

I actually have an "antipode" of it:

Or is it an antonym? Or anti-something-else?
