OT Non-Pentax camera review - Camp Snap
OK, "review" is probably optimistic. I got this camera a couple days ago and have really been enjoying it. https://photos.app.goo.gl/7ysAmiSTJhFwDTQr5 This is the Camp Snap camera. It was designed to be a cheap (really cheap) alternative to disposable film cameras that a parent could send to camp with their kids. My daughter gave me one for my birthday and I've been carrying it around taking horrible pictures for the last few days. Take a look at the photo album for a couple sample photos I took while walking the dog this morning, along with a few photos of the camera itself. I'll add a few more shortly. 2.54cm per inch, for those of you in less civilized places... The not so good: It's cheap, as in cheaply made. The textured grip on the front is cheap adhesive plastic and has already started to peel at the corners. On the plus side, I anticipate replacing it with fun colors and designs in the not-so-distant future. The body is cheap plastic and really does feel like a 90s drug store disposable. The viewfinder is more of a suggestion. Even without glasses on and my face pressed right up against it, it might show 60% of what's actually going to be captured. The best way to work with this is to simply put the part of your subject that you want in the middle, in the middle, and then pray. Adjust in post. In addition to the severe crop, the viewfinder is fuzzy. It looks out of focus all the time, regardless of the distance from the subject. Resulting images are super grainy in low-light situations. This was expected. I'll try to add some more photos to the album in a bit showing this. There's an annoying double beep when turning the camera on, a single beep when turning it off, and a fake shutter noise when taking a picture. There is no way to disable these sounds. I may put some tape on the speaker. The not so bad: There are no "settings" that can be adjusted in the camera itself. In fact, there are two controls on the camera. The shutter release is also the power button. Long press to turn it off or on, and a short press to take a picture. There's a 3 position switch for the flash. On/Off/Auto. That's it. There is no other way to manipulate the camera while in use. Some might see this as crippling, but I think it's perfect considering the camera's intended use. The "settings" are adjusted by flashing a new firmware to the camera. This is easy to do and clearly documented on their support site. Currently, there are 3 options: standard, vintage, and black & white. The two photos in the album were taken with the vintage firmware. It makes the photos a bit greener than I'd like. I intend to try the B firmware soon. There were apparently earlier firmware versions that disabled the beeps and clicks, but they don't seem to be available at the moment. I'd like to know more about this, and think it would be really cool if they published some instructions for editing the firmware. The camera isn't aware of rotation. If you take a vertical photo, you'll need to rotate it later on your computer. It's literally point and shoot. No thinking, no focusing, heck, no composing. It's light, and it's not uncomfortable to hold. The only display is a photo counter on the back. They state about 500 pictures on a charge. Once the card is wiped, the counter resets. This also starts the file naming over. There are no date/time stamps. You have to figure this out for yourself when copying them over to a PC. I'm working on a script to automagically do some of this for me. Speaking of which, it connects to your computer or phone with a USB-C cable. Not some janky leftover mini-USB garbage like every other cheap POS electronic device. USB-C. That's really cool. The camera comes with an SD card pre-installed. It's behind a screwed on plate. I assume it can be replaced, but I haven't tried. The good: It fits in my pocket. It's cheap (to buy), costing about the same as 3 disposable 35mm cameras and processing. This is the most fun I've had with a camera in a long, long time. Alan, today I saw an emperor female laying eggs in the pool nearby. As I said this is an event where you usually have a few seconds if the dragonfly is not disturbed. AF-S single point, no need to use MF. I noticed the small red-eye damselfly only in lightroom! Alan, that review confirms my experience with this lens about AF-S and AF-C. The body is the limiting factor in AF. However this review is from 2017 so they haven't tested it on the K-3 III. I bought the K-70 a few years ago to fit the 55-300 PLM (it won't combine with my K-5) and for me this is a pleasant light weight combo to walk around in nature. For birding you often need a longer lens which I don't have. Only if it gets stuck I would switch to a mirrorless system like the Fujifilm XT-5. I water cooled my system. Partly because I wanted to, and partly because it was recommended. I've seen a couple of fan coolers that I could have used. Even with liquid cooling I've had CPU temps in the mid 90ºC range when doing some heavy image processing. No reason to go watercooling when there are air coolers like that. Quieter and less problematic - can't have a water leak if there's no water. I'll upgrade my PC someday (probably not this year), and my planned solution looks similar to yours. Except I'll go Zen 5 (Ryzen 9700X, likely), as they'll be available by then. That's pretty much what my build was last year. I ended up with the Aorus x670E Master but a little less processor, I put in the Ryzen 7 7700X. I stayed with Gigabyte for the video card, but mine is also a 3060 with 12gb ram. When I was bench marking stuff I discovered that my intended MB was slower with 128gb of ram than it was with 64 so I went with less ram. I figured using the M.2 cards as swap would be fine, and so far I've only gone to swap a few times with 64b, and that was with hugely deep focus stacks off the X-T5 where it's decided a hundred exposures are required. Upgrading win 10 to 11 is pretty straightforward if I remember correctly. And the GUI is identical, I don't see why you can hate Win11 and love Win10. Microsoft is still weeding out old Win10 code and if you deep dive in the system the old stuff is still running (like control panel, device manager etc). The Settings app is not my favorite tool to tweak, the same for Apple OS's settings app (maybe that's improved but my Mac Mini from 2012 is frozen by Apple). Some dragonflies do indeed hover, so you have sometimes one or more seconds. The fast emperor is not one of these, but I have earlier taken some in flight pics in the way you shoot on a racing circuit. The PLM is a fast and silent lens, however all Pentax bodies (perhaps except the K-3 III) are weak in AF. I'm shooting dragonflies in flight in AF-S with single point, because AF-C is unusable. So in the end, after doing some research based on input from the PDML, I bought a motherboard/CPU package and a new graphics board. I spent several hours today installing the new motherboard (the cooling system I got for the new CPU, although far from the most extensive available, is freakin' HUGE!) and graphics card. Here's the most amazing thing: Windows 10 just booted right up. Yup. Recognized the new hardware and installed drivers almost instantly. You could have knocked me over with a feather! It's still early days but I can already tell this is MUCH faster. Some deconvolution sharpening actions on K-1 files that used to take minutes now take seconds. Big fun. Since it's been a loong time since I've refreshed this system (and I've done too much tinkering in the interim) I'll do an OS refresh and reinstall apps when I have more free time, just to be safe. Mine has never needed anything but an occasional fresh battery. The -E gave you manual ISO settings, the -X read the ISO from the film canister. That manual control of ISO nets full control of exposure so that's what I bought. The Pentax 17 looks like a decent camera, albeit to my eye the styling seems a little clunky and I don't understand the need for all those controls and mode settings. The choice of half-frame 35 format is interesting, memories of a lot of fine photos made with Olympus Pen EE cameras comes to mind. However, this is arguably my all-time favorite compact 35mm camera. It's full-frame 24x36 mm format... Minox 35GT-E :: https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53837228803_b43a592cb9_b.jpg I bought it new in 1998, cost about $400 IIRC. The lens is excellent quality, the negatives are terrific. The only thing it lacks, for me, is a full manual exposure setting capability, but the aperture priority auto plus manual ISO setting net all the adjustability I could want. With the lens door folded, it is smooth and compact, slips nicely even into a jeans pocket. The makrolon plastic construction is very tough and difficult to scratch. This for me is the first time I was able to shoot a pair of emperor dragonflies. Just plain luck to see them 'in copula', busy shaking off another attacking dragonfly, close to where I was standing on the edge of woods. Oh dear. I have a similar problem with the neighbour's cats. They love to dig random holes in our garden and any seedlings in the way get uprooted. Everything has to be under netting or chicken wire. About the rattlesnake and lizard: I hope the snake was behind glass! If so, how did you shoot it with no glare at all? The Coors can shot is just kind of sad. So many people are slobs. We’ve done a lot of hiking in the White Mountains in New Hampshire, and the amount of trash we’ve sometimes hauled out has been remarkable. Yes, common tern is correct. Bokeh is difficult in this case. A pentax 560 would be better but my wallet and back don't agree. This coolpix is 900 grams and 2000mm range. Return of the prodigal K-3 III
My K-3 III was delivered today after being repaired by Precision. It took just over a month from my sending it in, they had to wait a couple of weeks for a replacement top plate. One might think that if service were their goal, they'd keep a better stock of spare parts on hand. sigh. It seems to work, as does the $75(with shipping)Tamron 18-250 I got to replace the broken Pentax 18-270, which I got to replace the broken 18-250. Sigh, I sent the original 18-250 off for repair just before I ended up getting my K-1, and only did a perfunctory test on it, and didn't notice that it no longer focused at full zoom. When I did eventually notice the problem, Tamron informed me that they no longer worked on that lens, and wouldn't even fix it, even if it was just a factory misadjustment. sigh. I'm going to need to go back and re-RTFM on the K-3III, they've changed so much in the UI since the K-1, I could barely find anything, like turning off the focus beep, or setting it to shoot in raw. For some reason the filesave type is showing as RAW+DNG In any case, it's nice to have it back. Yes, they extend out to completely cover/protect the contacts. back caps and body caps
I've found there to be a tremendous range in both quality and price of K-mount back caps for lenses. I have not found there to be consistent correlation between quality and price though. Some of them will tighten down nicely and stay attached, others will stay loose and just fall off. Has anybody found good deals on quality K-mount back caps? Yes. My K110D only offers PEF. When I occasionally use it, I convert to DNG which is the universal standard. I shoot PEF, and convert to DNG on import with Lightroom ("Copy as DNG").
The reason I do this is that when Lightroom does the conversion, it embeds
a checksum that can later be used with "Library > Validate DNG Files" to
verify that no disk corruption has occurred. At least at the time I decided
to do things this way, DNG as shot by my cameras did not embed this
checksum.
Once a month, I select all the photos in my catalog and run the Validate
task. (Knock on wood, it has never found an error so far.)

The *ist-D allowed you to save as PEF, TIF or JPG. Herbert Kepler recommended TIF in his Popular Photography column, so that's what I shot in 2004. IIRC, the TIF was available in small, medium & large, which I didn't understand at the time. After I got home in 2005 & could buy more CF cards fairly easily, I switched to PEF. Continued to shoot PEF when I finally got a K10D. Began shooting DNG files late in 2012 when I got a K20D. Occasionally I would shoot JPEG (when I would somehow gum up the settings) or RAW+JPEG With the K-3 & K-1 I've shot exclusively DNG. Watching from afar, my impression was that recent governments in the UK had no Opinions. Rather, they had Positions, and said Positions might change daily or weekly depending on feedback from donors and/or polling organizations. (Not unlike a few other governments I can think of.)
