Raw file format?
Hi All, I tried a program to convert PEF's to jpegs (I wanted something small that would just do a quick batch convert for when I am away). I have a *STDs. RE: What do you think?
Herb, Thanks for the reply but perhaps I did not put it well. Yes it can be done but I believe that there are a number of people that whilst wanting the dif charactoristics of dif films are not prepared to spend the time involved in 'learning how to do what you say in Photoshop. What I would like (and I believe others and yes I know it is asking some one else to do the work but hey that's joe public for you!) is some already made profiles that I can just choose from a menu and decide for the image to look like it was taken with say Kodak Gold or Velvia. My father in law likes the 'qualities' of Kodak Gold style films and would like a digital camera but does not want to get within a mile of things like Photoshop! I wonder how many other people are like that perhaps 'joe public' does not give a damm about things like this.I would like that facility in a digital camera ('preset profiles' that mimic certain films). Comparison of BW film
Hi All, I have actually been able to get time to 'burn some film' and I must admit the feeling was great! We had a local carnival with all day events (Displays, strongest man etc).I took the LX and really enjoyed using it. Normally I use colour neg film (for every day snaps etc), but I love BW and when I shoot with BW I usually use FP4 or HP5. I have been trying to find some example of other BW films but I have not found any web site that show the same thing in the photo so as to be able to compare the various films (FP4/T-max/Tri-x etc).Does anyone know of a site that has such a thing? I know that I should get a roll of each and do some tests myself (I have tested the Delta range and found them very good), but at the moment I have precious little time to shoot at all and I would be interested in hearing other peoples comparisons. I am not after 'This is the best and the rest are crap', no what I am after is examples of there characteristics with a picture of some thing (anything!) Done with diff films so that I could see the characteristics that are being discussed. I know that this is a lot of work but I am surprised that I cant find anyone that has done this anywhere on the net. Not even on the film makers sites. Can anyone help? I am sorry if I am putting this badly but it is one of those things that I know what I am after but not sure EXACTLY how to say. Alan

There is also a good bitter to be had in Wiltshire - Arkell's. Here in the Cheshire (UK) we have (as many other places do ) a yearly beer festival in September. There are usually between 50 and 60 different beers on offer. One beer that HAS to be there and goes the first night if not rationed (the event is on over three sessions) is called 'wobbly Bob'. I used to go to these beer festivals. My wife would drop me off and I would spend the afternoon sampling many different brews. There is always a fine Lancashire hotpot with pickled red cabbage by the ton (or sandwiches for the wimps). When I could sample no more (As Mike Harding says 'your only drunk when you have to hold on to the floor'), I would press a preset on my mobile phone and my wife would know that the 'Martian' on the other end was me and it was time for picking up! Alas over the years the beers have got finer, but I can no-longer take the pace and it is such a shame as the chance to taste so many fine brews is great indeed. BTW you 'buy the beers with tickets that you have to purchase before and the beer is only served in 1/2 pint glasses.

RE: Re[2]: Digital vs.FILM: will digital cameras lose the war?
False. You can copy *any* file 100 times a second for the next 100 years, and the last copy will be as good as the first one. Assuming you have the patience :) Not quite true! If you were to look at a cd with the error correction turned off you might have a mess! It is a bit like cloning. Each generation CAN (not always) introduce errors. Usually error correction takes care of this but you eventually come to a point of no return. To many errors for the erc to correct. Then you have a goosed file. I came across this when trying to make a cd 'master' to send for pro copying (2000 copies) They could not work with a CD master because it had to many bit errors on it, yet it worked fine! I had to send the files using other media. If you want to prove this use floppies, it does not take an impossible time with them to get to the point of error. It WILL take longer then a few hours though ;-) Alan (some one who has to frequently recover the data on these 'perfect copies')
RE: Digital vs.FILM: will digital cameras lose the war?
I keep my images on a RAID system, so individual disk life is a non issue. Any critical data is handled this way.Think about all the companies/institutions/etc. that need to keep data for long peroids of time. There are systems to do this, and the data is 100% preserved. We had a saying, 'To keep data for a few months, use DAT/DLT' 'to keep data for a few years, USE optical' 'To keep data for longer use Paper!' Alan
RE: Digital vs.FILM: will digital cameras lose the war?(getting OT)
How does level of RAID affect it? Raid can only take care of a certain level of failiure RAID 5 (striped set with parity) will fail when two failures happen(two disks die or in this case tapes) And so on, but they will all fail at a certain level. For NAMAS and FDA standards they usually want a paper copy, in a fire proof safe guarded by the us military! (slight over exaggeration but not far off!) A customer had all there records on floppies and tapes for the past five years (real time data capture) The inspectors came in and failed them because there was not a 'permenant copy' Th ecompany had to buy a lot of extra gear and employ quite a few people to 'print out' the data. It took them five more years to do this! All digital storage has limitations (mind you so does all storage!) People put tom much faith in error correction and don't have enough backups. How valuable is the data. Vogon a data retreival company have a saying about securing data that is in a way also true of storing data. Is your data worth more then the disk drive? If yes then to completely erase the data 'melt it in a furnace' If not whats the problem? Is your data (pictures) worth more to you then the cost of multiple types of storage media and multiple Storage places? If not whats the problem? OT:Which print film with the most contrast range
Hi all, My father in law has just come back from a holiday in Austria (Myerhofen) And he uses an Olympus 35RD camera (I gave it him to use instead of the canon sure shot that he could never get to give good pictures). The pictures he has come back with are very good. Some would stand up to enlargement to perhaps poster size. The problem is with some is that the light was just to bright and the shadows to dark (to much range). He used Fuji superia 100 and 200. Is there a film that has a greater contrast range capability ( don't know what else to call it). Practically all his photography is up mountains and either the whites are bleached or the darks are black. He does not want an SLR and kit (say he carries to much already and at 79 he does far better then me!). What do people use for print film when it is bright, lots of UV and dark shadows? A tall order I know but perhaps some films are better then others for this type of situation. Alan P.S. Alan Herb said, all of the advanced books on photography i have read lately start their hardware section on calibrating the light meters in your camera body for exposure accuracy and marking the difference on the body itself. each individual body is different within a single model and possibly batch. if Velvia 50 needs to be rated at 64 to get proper exposures, then that is what you do, not complain about lousy exposure meters as Joe is doing. - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. RE: Pentax - New Directions (now getting longer)
Hi Alan, Can you explain in more detail? If I take a picture of a Kodak grey card in bright sunshine (say) and then compare the slide how do I know that I am not being fooled by the 'characteristics' of the film rather then exposure? I am sorry if this is obvious to you but it is not to me. I used to work on optical analytical equipment and perhaps I am thinking in to exact terms. With my cameras I just get to know the 'personality' of each and beat it around the head a bit until it does what I want ;-) I would like to be able to explain the procedure of 'calibrating' to my wife who is just getting into macro photography (MZ7 and either velvia or Kodak 100 extra colour). Do you know of any links to articles about this? Thanks Alan (almost like the Monty Python sketch g'day Bruce, Hello Bruce.!) -Original Message- From: Alan Chan [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Tuesday, July 09, 2002 10:57 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: RE: Pentax - New Directions (now getting longer) I know that this has been gone through before butI am confused, so could someone please explain HOW to 'calibrate'. AFAIK, the metering is accurate if the reading from the Kodak grey card is correct. However, 1/3-1/2 EV difference is quite common among new and used cameras. regards, Alan Chan _ Join the world's largest e-mail service with MSN Hotmail. http://www.hotmail.com - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. RE: Pentax - New Directions (now getting longer)
Agreed. Let me try to clarify what I am after. If I buy a camera and assume that I know the 'characteristics of a film (slide). Is there any quantative way of testing the camera so that I know if it over or under exposes? How do I know that a picture taken that for example appears over exposed is because the camera interpreted it incorrectly for my tastes. How do I minimise the effects of all the other things in the equation (colour temp, development etc). If I still worked in a lab I could put it on a jig and use known light sources etc (sad aren't I ;-). I know that a lot of this is subjective. Its more a case of finding out for example: camera A has a tendency to overexpose under these conditions and film B is not good at handling under exposure. How do you split out the characteristics of each part? What about the lens? Or is it a case of saying this combination (camera, lens, film) has a tendency to do this. Does this make any sense? Best regards Alan Calibration starts with you and your appraisal of the final image. You make the adjustments required to enable the camera and lens to deliver what you expect. That is the start. To expect your camera, or any camera, to deliver the goods, without your envolvement, will lead you down a long lonely path. My honest opinion, but your mileage may vary. I have only just started out printing my own BW so apologies if this is a silly question. RE: Optio and Other Digital Cameras
Hi Shel, I have the Optio 430. One is that it can focus very, very close, to within about an inch or so of the subject. The other is that it uses an f/1.8 fixed aperture lens. Do any other digital cameras offer these features. Not the Optio. Aperture is EITHER max2.6-4.8 or 5.0-9.2 i.e. there are two apertures and the value is dependant on the focal length used. if you shine a light into the lens you can see the 'disc' snap into place. My biggest concern is that every camera I've looked at has a lens that only goes to about a 35mm equivalent on the wide end. Is there any camera that'll go to 28mm, or, better yet, 24mm? The Optio is a nice, small package, but its lenses are relatively slow, and of a variable aperture, and it doesn't look like it can even take an accessory WA lens, as some other cameras can. Is this the case? How close can it focus? Focus is min 0.46ft And what about the sensor speed? Maybe I missed it in the specs, but I couldn't tell what the ISO range is on the various Optios. 100 or 200 or auto (not sure if this realy means between values as well) Hope you can help with these questions. Here's a nice article that describes long lens technique: http://www.naturephotographers.net/bh0201-1.html Sorry, but this article is written by a fool. No ball head on the planet can support a 600mm lens. No wonder this guy struggles with the lens. Take a look at the image and see the thin stem of the head holding the long and heavy 600mm lens with most of the weight off-axis. This guy is trying to defeat the laws of physics. Every nature photography book I own, written by European nature photographers mind you, will tell that this setup simply doesn't work. It is also my experience. I stopped using my heavy duty ball head because it didn't produce sharp images with my 600mm lens. Not only is the magnification a problem; equally important is the weight. A Pentax 600/4 weights 7kg with almost all the weight in the front of the lens. This means you cannot really trust the weight load capacity of your tripod/head since most of the weight are off-axis. A 300/2.8 with converter will in fact be a set-up that's far easier to handle. - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. RE: Which high speed BW film?
The trouble is the big difference in prices around the world. If I was shooting that much I would negotiate a lower price with a supplier. But that may not be possible where you are. I always like to haggle over price and the local camera shops know this I usually get films (ISO10~400 24 exp) for around £1.00 instead of the usual price of £2.00 Some times I think they do that just to shut me up ;-) I have bought a lot of stuff from them though. RE: Which high speed BW film?
I have used and liked Delta 3200.I was supprised at how GOOD the grain was (rated at 3200) I used it for evening shots (after dusk) outside. Alan Hi! My friend asked me to make some photos of his band and I need your help with it. I own him a favor so I couldn't refuse even though I was tempted doing so. Making photos for pure fun is something totaly different for me than making them for somebody. I warned him that I'm an ameteur but he said that he and his fellows liked my photos that I have on my website and like to give me a try. They want indoor shots of the band and portrait like shots of each member (lucky for me only four of them). In addition they want some of their equipment photographed as well. It all would have to be done in a place where they practice - some technical rooms in the dorms - I think without windows (it would be in the evening anyway). What I have is AF-201SA flash (don't know if even bother to take it) and two 500 watt halogen, garden lamps. They want the pictures in BW (no way to do something else with this lighting anyway). As I've been experimenting with it a bit with this lamps (bought them very recently) it seem that for reasonable short time something like ISO 1600 or even 3200 would be necessary. And now for the question - which film would you suggest to use? Maybe to different ones for people and gear shooting? I've heard good opinions about Fuji Neopan 1600, but maybe something else would be a better choice? Maybe some other film push processed? I normally use Ilford XP2 (ISO 400) and process everything in the lab - the BW films would be processed in a pro lab as well. I might give a try something with a big grain but not for all the shots. RE: I Need More Speed
I would not expect even that on a regular basis! V90 will 'retrain' every so often anyway. In the UK anything above 40K is good and the likely hood of getting reliably above 50K is rare. RE: Happy Christmas (long but hopefully worth the read)
Well, My Pentax presents this year were far more then I had hoped for and some of it totally unexpected. Especially as the digital came from my mum who is staying with us this Xmas (Dad died 18 months ago and he is very much missed) She is only on a pension andI feel very bad about the cost of the camera. From what I can find out , the reason mum bought it me is that when dad was alive he was One of those people who did not like to have his picture taken (the whole family is like that), But I did manage to take his picture every so often. Then 18 months ago when they were on there hols (golden wedding anniversary present from mum to dad) He was mugged (over a packet of cigarettes) and ended up in a coma. My mum spent 8 weeks in Spain (she is in a wheelchair) waiting to see if my father would survive. He did (to obstinate to give in bless him!) and although he had brain damage and needed a lot of Looking after he recovered almost completely. He was aged 79 by the way. I continued to photograph my dad and the rest of the family. Unfortunately my dad died of a congenital defect that was a time bomb in him from birth. One of the most treasured possessions that my mother has is the last picture I took of him. No one else in our family takes pictures and now they all regret it. I am glad I did. Alan True, very true.
