Re: istD button battery cover?
This is going to seem bad, but the *ist-D is now over 10 years old. Heck I bet that the last one manufactured was probably produced in 2004 and that production run was sold until they ran out in 2006. Last time I saw a *ist-D for sale at KEH it went for less than $90.00 in EX condition. Parts are probably made out of unobtainium at this point, and since one can probably sell their *ist-D for ~90 dollars that's what the battery door is worth. I think you have two viable options. Haunt E-bay and KEH waiting for one to show up to steal the battery cover from, (or replace the entire camera with the new/old *ist-D), or replace it with a newer camera. The K-50 is still being sold new and it's just shy of being a K-5II, with a better viewfinder than the *ist-D and at it's current new price it's practically being given away. Re: Trade an *istD for a Samsung NX-30 in NYC
Actually it uses the same version of the Prime image processor as the K-30 produces 12 bit per pixel data files so I expect that it actually uses the version of the sensor that is in the K-30 which was supposed to in the same family but not identical to that in the K-5. My second problem is the decision to adopt the K mount. Apart from adding to the bulk of the camera, it means that you can't get various adapters to fit a wide range of older lenses, as you can with other mirrorless cameras. I would have preferred the designers to have followed a similar approach to the m43 designers and adopted a short lens registration distance while allowed the fitting of K-mount lenses via an AF adapter (assuming that approach would have been technically feasible). Let's be honest. The K-01 was a minimal R&D effort. It was basically a K30 without a Pentaprism/mirrorbos, that sold for about the same price as a K30. The biggest cost to Pentax was hiring Marc Newsom to put lipstick on the pig. If Pentax had simply copied the styling cues from a Kodak Instamatic 100 they would have had a bigger seller, with a higher profit margin. If Pentax had actually spent some R&D money on fitting an EVF into it, at least as good as the one in the Fuji Pro X 1, everyone who owns a collection of Pentax lenses would have bought one as a second body, to hell with what it looked like. -- A newspaper is a device for making the ignorant more ignorant, and the crazy, crazier. - H.L.Mencken -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
Re: Trade an *istD for a Samsung NX-30 in NYC
I wouldn't assign this 'truly desperate attempt' to the "mirrorless" domain. I'd assign it to the Samsung cameras domain. Samsung has been struggling to get market recognition for their brand in cameras since the late 1980s. They bought Rollei and held that for a while, the have rights to use the Schneider name. They have a decent line-up in their " mirrorless" system. But few in the US seem to care about any Samsung camera. Sony, Panasonic, Olympus, and Fuji seems to be doing nicely with these systems. SLRs are still stronger in the US by a good margin, but it's hard to read the market clearly when sales of ALL cameras have taken a huge tumble in the past two-three years, SLRs included. The Sony A7, the Fuji XT-1, the Olympus E-M1, the Panasonic GH4 ... These are all pretty fine cameras. It will take some time yet to see them take the mindspace majority position, mostly because none of them are labeled Nikon or Canon. Which is too bad in a way. I just left the "local" full service camera store, (unfortunately they are not going to start stocking Pentax again any time soon), played with a Sony a7 ff and was blown away by the EVF. It's really very good. If only the shutter wasn't so damned loud and the rest of the performance wasn't so comprised, also got to play with a Fuji Pro X 1, and while the hybrid Optical/Electronic viewfinder is intriguing, after looking at the Sony the electronic side of the viewfinder was just rough and annoying. The rest of the camera was just, retro, beautiful. Hell I'm close enough to New York that I could take either my *ist-Ds or D in and take advantage of the offer. sold the istD at the photo expo
I bucked the crowds on Thursday. I had gotten in free thanks to KEH but they offered me only $16 for the istD. I repeated SIXTEEN?? to make sure he had not said "sixty" but alas, not. So KEH didn't get it. I found out there was someone else buying used stuff and he gave me $50 which was lots better. I know I couldn't expect to get a really good price from a dealer but it saved me a lot of anxiety selling it on ebay and I had given you guys first crack at it. This person used to work for KEH too - heh... In addition to that sale, I got a free card loader and 3 shopping bags. Smugmug had a booth and I hung out there for a while doing a bit of griping over the New Smugmug but getting some help with it also. While eventually I'll have to switch over it won't be necessary for another year or so and by then the kinks should be worked out - some of them already are ... one of which was how easy it is now to ask for money... before you had to make a special request if it was under $500. I gave away that crazy Olympus digital to a sweet man from Ohio who was amused by it and shoots Olympus - I couldn't sell it so it seemed right. I met him because he saw my K-5 and had been a Pentaxian before going digital - and was thinking of returning. gave him my card and told him about the list, of course Also got some paper paper samples from Bay photo. My istD has never shown low battery readings on turning on, unless the batteries are genuinely flat! It will show a low or zero battery charge after using the built-in flash, but the On/Off fix works every time. I use Eneloops in it and they last a long time. Both my *ist-D, (never used since I think I cracked the top circuit board), and my *ist Ds exhibit similar behavior. Turn the camera on with fresh rechargeable or lithium disposables and they show zero charge. Turn them off and on again and sometimes you see a full charge. Sometimes not even then. However I keep an old lead pencil with a real rubber eraser on hand for just this emergency. Pop the batteries out and erase the contact surfaces on the inside of the battery compartment then blow off any residual rubber. Viola*, the the camera works when the batteries are replaced. I suspect that there's a microscopic layer of oxidation on the battery contacts, unseen to the naked eye. *That's what the spell checker suggested and I'm sticking with it. I've had two *istDs, one broke after a fall (still around somewhere but not worth repairing). The other (bought from Dave Brooks) has been a flawless performer. Quoting "J.C. O'Connell" : I ask because I am still using my istDS from 2006. I cant afford a K-5 yet. Yes. My *ist DS has a shutter release problem which makes it unusable unless I plug in a remote cord and release the shutter with that. Re: IstD B&W modification
Yeah, that would be perfect for low light, or astrophotography. For me, I just want the detail that eliminating the de-mosiac filter and Bayer interpolation affords, plus straight up B&W. I think you still need the microlenses to focus the light onto the photosites however, so I'm not sure how this would work as far as removing these filters go. I don't know why someone like Pentax doesn't just have a small, slightly modified assembly line to create a few of these specialized cameras every year, I'm sure there is a market for something like this. Not very big, but willing to buy it for specialized needs. Re: IstD B&W modification
Yeah, maybe not for Pentax. Someone has done it for Canon T series and is selling them. Very cool, but not willing to pay $2000 for it. It sounds like yanking out the filter and microlenses would destroy the CCD. On Tue, Sep 13, 2011 at 3:24 PM, P. J. Alling wrote: > The Bayer filter is under the micro lenses. Re: IstD B&W modification
Well, you still have to convert it to B&W from the raw data. The difference is that you take the values as they are, and per pixel, no array computation. The Bayer filter is under the micro lenses. I don't think that what you want to do is possible. My understanding is that the Bayer color filter array is attached quite directly to the sensor, underneath the microlens array. It's not a mechanically separate layer in the "sandwich" like the antialiasing and/or IR filters are. See for example: http://micro.magnet.fsu.edu/primer/digitalimaging/cmosimagesensors.html If the Pentax sensors are different, and you somehow managed to remove the color filters, I think you'd do OK shooting in raw. The dcraw software, for example, is capable of outputting a monochrome image without demosaicing. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
Re: IstD B&W modification
I don't think that it would make the camera B&W. The circuitry in the camera/raw processor interpolates the luminance data into colors and assigns a color based on the strength of the light. The color filters simply filter light. I'd be interested to see what the results would be if you can get it off. You might end up with a sharper image if you take off both the Bayer array and the AA filter. The Bayer array softens the image a bit, and the AA (anti-aliasing) filter gives some of the sharpness back. I actually have one of those too. I sometimes use it with the Ds when tethered, (which dispite what Pentax says, works fairly well).
