Re: **JUNK** Re: GESO -- The Game.
That’s what happens when I type on my phone at 0-dark-30, Michigan and Harvard played 8 times beginning in 1891. They were 4-4. Michigan lists national championships for 1902, 03 and 04, among many others, but I think it was known as “Championship of the West” back then and didn’t include the Ivy League. By the way, Michigan considers its game against Ohio State to be “the game,” although in truth the Michigan State game is a bigger deal in much of the home state, especially since MSU has been beating up on old blue in recent years. I think most everyone who didn't actually attend Harvard, who actually think about Harvard, hates Harvard. Most of us don't hate Harvard, most of the time I barely notice it exists. I guess indifference is worse than hate anyway. On 12/22/2017 9:18 AM, Daniel J. Matyola wrote: Nice Action shots, PJ. I. for one, still care about Ivy League football. Re: GESO -- The Game.
Nice Action shots, PJ. I. for one, still care about Ivy League football. I attended Dartmouth during the early 1960s, when the legendary Bob Blackman was at his peak as a coach and recruiter. In my senior year, Dartmouth won the Lambert Trophy as the best team in the Northeast, back before the trophy was split into three for different levels. Dartmouth also had its last All-American, Don McKinnon. He played center on offense and linebacker on defense. I still attend Ivy games, mostly at Princeton and occasionally at Penn. Two years ago, I posted some shots of the Dartmouth-Princeton game here and on the PPG. Of course, being a Dartmouth grade, I HATE Harvard, even more than Princeton or Yale. GESO -- The Game.
If you have to ask what game, well there's just no hope for you... OK, so it's the Yale Harvard football classic, the one that was killing and maiming so many of America's best and brightest around of the turn of the 20th Century, that President Theodore Roosevelt felt obliged to mediate, and thus the modern sport of Football, (American, and it's Younger Canadian brother), was born. So no one cares and the Ivy league hasn't been the cutting edge of Football since sometime in the 1930's, but Yale and Harvard still take it seriously. For the rest of us it's a good excuse for a cookout in miserable cold fall weather, often rainy or like this year threatening to rain anyway. The last few years have been disappointing for Yale fans but this year, Yale handed the Harvard team their heads after bouncing them down the field a bit. I took almost 200 images but rather than bore everyone I've put together a representative sample of what happened with great regularity and a couple of shots of tailgaters having way too much fun, for probably the wrong reasons. https://pdml.updog.co/thegame2017/GESO%20--%20thegame.html Equipment: Pentax K-5II w/Kalamare 500mm MC Mirror f8.0 or SMC Pentax F 70-210mm f4.0~5.6 As usual comments are welcome but may be totally ignored. -- America wasn't founded so that we could all be better. playing the pano/hdr game in lr/ps
The first problem that I seem to be having is that the files I get back from photoshop seem to be treating the DNGs from lightroom as 8 bit jpegs rather than 14/16 bit raws (despite it being set as 16 bit in preferences). A few action shots (home team in red jerseys) and a few crowd shots are at: http://photos.stanhalpin.com/p136536907 We had a good seats for viewing, 10 rows up, just left of home plate. But not so good for photography - the **@%! protective netting was just the wrong distance away so that I couldn't get any DOF on the players without at least some of the netting in the view. Oh well - try to look past it and accept it as part of the real-world context for the shots. stan -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Tim Parkin weighs in on digital vs film (game is not over YET)
I believe that Tim Parkin is a PDML subscriber, so maybe he can illuminate this a bit more, but on Twitter yesterday he pointed to some extreme crop comparisons between: Nikon D800E with a Zeiss 25mm lens and a Mamiya 7 (6x7) with a 50mm lens with Velvia 50 and Adox CMS 20. The results might surprise you. Here is the whole scene: http://static.timparkin.co.uk/static/tmp/fullframe.jpg Here is the D800E (top) and the Velvia (bottom) http://static.timparkin.co.uk/static/tmp/compared-with-clean-velvia.jpg And here is the D800E (top) and the Adox CMS 20 (bottom) http://static.timparkin.co.uk/static/tmp/compared-with-clean-cms20.jpg I suppose that there could be some debate on the differences in the lenses and I'm not sure if the film was scanned (or with what). But I find it interesting that film can still exceed digital at exteme crops/very large printing sizes and only by going to a 6x7 size over what is considered the state of the art full frame sensor camera available today. I think the film wins by a substantial margin. (Keeping in mind that this is just not *any* film). For most of us, this is academic, since we rarely need such extreme crops or print at such sizes, but I find it interesting nonetheless. -- Photography is a Bastard left by Science on the Doorstep of Art - Peter Galassi -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
Re: Tim Parkin weighs in on digital vs film (game is not over YET)
I am an avid film user and especially a fan of MF but I have to say that something is just plain wrong with this test. Maybe the Zeiss 25mm lens is not so good on the digital body? I don't know but the degree of aliasing and color noise is just far beyond what one sees normally with a decent digital SLR. If I took that shot with my K5 and saw that much noise and aliasing, I wouldn't be thinking of going back to film, I'd be thinking of camera repair options. I still think MF film beats digital (at least my K5) in a few specialized situations were there is a ton of detail - like scenes dominated by lots of trees or brush or foliage. Dense young woods, scrubby brushy wastes, tall grass fields, etc. The film can better resolve the detail and the high degree of visual content hides the film's inherently greater amount of noise (grain). But that is a specialized situation - in most situaitons, there just isn't that much detail and the digital sensor can handle it just fine and the benefits of lower noise make the digital image more pleasing. The majority of human environments have very little fine detail in them and digital is as good or better than film, IMO. A little guessing game (was PESO: Study in light and shadow)
I love that shot. And after reading Charles Abel's Professional Portrait Lightings, I've been tempted to do some of the types of shots. But time does not allow, at least not yet. And I'd love to do them in both film and digital, for a variety of reasons. So this is just for the exercise. I began by asking myself: What lights were used? and then tried to figure out the scene. So here's my analysis: There is a light to the left, accounting for the glare off the phone and the tip of her nose. To account for the nose and (her) right cheek shadow, it looks like it's roughly 1 ft higher than her head, (depending on its distance from her) and right at 90 deg to the left. Then there is a light on the right for some fill, seen in the bracelet on her left arm and on the phone cord. It also looks to be close to 90 deg to the side. Then there was a third light for the back right background, intentionally lighting only part of it to add to the contrast. But there's a trick here. The mirror is reflecting white or light gray. That means it is pointing at something like a wall or curtain being lit by a fourth light. How'd I do? The main is almost 90 deg to the camera with a grid and is about 2 feet above the model's eye level. The fill has a grid snoot. It's aimed at the back of her left (viewer's right) shoulder; feathered off to provide a rim light. The third light is very low power on the backdrop - just enough to make the pattern visible and provide separation. The mirror is the back of one of the hotel chairs from the meeting room where the class was held. She's sitting sideways, right on the front corner it's lit by the spill from the fill light. The chair was upholstered in a kind of off white vinyl. The bracelet on her left arm is mostly lit by the main. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

I figure I'm going to bring the K20, 20-35mm 43mm and either the Vivitar 70-210 or the F 70-210, and settled on the F because I want to travel almost light. I toyed with the idea of bringing a 300mm but I'm not covering this professionally and since when did I ever carry a lens to something like this with more than a 300mm AOV, (in 35mm terms), even then. Maybe I'll have some interesting shots to show later. It happened at a student only lot. Thirty degrees around the circle of lots surrounding the Stadium from our location. Bad deal all around, but no direct effect. I got a picture of one of the emergency response helicopters though before I knew what happened. It was a disaster on the field for Yale as well. I stopped caring when the score reached 21-7. I'm going to look at the pictures later to see if any of them are worth posting.
