It was the least expensive of all the Pentax 135 K-mount lenses. Some

Honest question: Isn't that the same thing as saying The K-mount era?
I ask because in my mind, the change from top quality Taks and budget Taks
occurred when the switch was made to the K-mount.
Then the SMC Pentax took over as top dog in the quality department,
chronologically.
Isn't that transformation when the Takumar name was resurrected?

I'll welcome support or refutation... Right now that's how I've come to
believe that history, and I'd rather know the truth than be 'right.' :-)

I'll check van Oosten's book later, to see if he clears it up.

Ah yes, the Bayonet series Takumars.
It's been said they're not quite up to the quality of the M42 Takumars, tho'.
That's only hearsay, taken from messages on this list, not something I've read
in a reference book.

For instance, my M42 S-M-C Takumar 135mm f/2.5 has 5 elements in 4 groups,
with a 6-blade aperture, while my Takumar Bayonet 135mm f/2.5 has 4 elements
in 4 groups, with a 8 blade aperture.
The Bayonet's lenses are coated, but are not SMC.
Seems they might perform differently, but I've done no critical testing of the
sisters...

lens hood!). I found it to be a great portrait lens and my example was
clearly not as soft (even wide open) as some would suggest. Never tried
it on digital, so I can't say if it would have CA problems.

Back to the issue of the LX body, this is a highly desired item if in
excellent condition and recently serviced... Completed auctions on eBay show
recent sales at $830, $303, $544, $237, $316, $290, and $598. In 1991 I
bought a new LX from Camera World of Oregon: body only $599.85 plus $109.85

Then the SMC Pentax took over as top dog in the quality department,
 chronologically.
Isn't that transformation when the Takumar name was resurrected?

That's my understanding too, Keith. The Super Takumars and SMC Takumars in
screw mount were reaching to be the best, aiming at Zeiss. With transition
to K-mount, there was an interest in a few budget lenses, using the old
Takumar name. I think the first was the simplified Takumar version of the
fine SMC Pentax 2.5/135, and I believe there were a couple others, then
several more recently.

See??
This is why people should _use_ a lens, look at the results, and then decide
whether _they_ like it or not.
All reputation aside, I like the Tak Bayonet 135/2.5 very much for tight
portraits.
The wide open 'softness' is perfect for this.
I definitely won't let it get the sun in its eye though, it flares, a _lot_.
That's when the SMCP 135/2.5 gets the job. ;-)

Don (Who also thinks the Takumar-F 70-210 is pretty darn nice.)

I sufferers by comparison to the SMC P 135mm f2.5 which is legendary.
Asahi originally used the Takumar name on their top line of lenses back
in the M42 mount days. When the K mount lenses were introduced they
changed the lens line name to Pentax. The Takumar bayonet lenses were
their bargain line, most were made by third party manufactures and
lacked the SMC coatings. The Takumar Bayonet 135 f2.5 is probably an
all right lens, quite a few members of this list have used and liked
it. But it's not as sharp, since it doesn't have SMC it's flare
resistance suffers, it's not as well built, and it has those silly
colored f stop markings (God what were they thinking when they
 did that).

I've started my auction at AUD375. The camera's only flaw is the glass in
the viewfinder eyepiece is loose. It doesn't affect the operation in any
way, so I've not bothered fixing it.

I haven't had the body serviced but there is not sign of sticky mirror and
the 6 or so rolls I've put through it have been great. It is genuinely in
excellent condition and working perfectly.

What's an LX worth?

If I go ahead and purchase a medium format, I'll probably sell the LX and a
couple of nice old Pentax lenses with it to help fund it. I'm not putting
this up for sale yet, but was wondering if those in the know could give me
an estimate of the kind of price I should realistically aim for with the LX.
It's in great condition and I'll be selling it with a SMC 35mm f3.5 manual

was thinking something in the region of $400 AUD (approx $300 USD). Any

Sell the camera and lenses individually: three auctions. Start the
camera with a first bid of $300 and no reserve. Based on your
description, I'm not sure what lenses you're talking about. If your 35

It had a roll of Silvertone 100 in it when this occured. It now has
Silvertone 400 (Throwaway roll, gotta love $2 film).

REPLY:

If it doesn't work on auto with film in the camera but works in manual only,
then it is a switch (or something) that needs to be replaced. This is a
common fault with the LX and happened with mine after 19 years.

Last time I asked Pentax Canada, they suggested either themselves or

Try rotating the ISO dial from stop to stop a couple of dozen times,
then take the lens off and move the aperture simulator lever from stop
to stop a couple of dozen times as well.
That at least takes care of the user servicable stuff.
Pentax Canada should still be supporting the LX fairly well. If they
don't, Frank mentioned Kominek's as being good, and Precision Camera in
Winnipeg has done good work for me in the past.

I had a similar problem with my LX in the past. It was I asked Pentax
repair in Vancouver to correct when I had then check out my LX.

The problem re-occurred after I got it back from Pentax repair. I
noticed a small protrusion in the bottom of the battery compartment that
was shorting out the batteries. I glued a small piece of plastic over
the protrusion and corrected the problem.

It's kind of a good idea to shoot film at something close to it's rated
speed, at least until you know if you need to adjust.
Kodak is making it more and more difficult all the time to get ISO
information off the box. The last Kodak film I looked at had the ISO in
small print somewhere in the vicinity of the barcode.

FS: LX and accoutrements

2006-05-06 Thread Illinois Bill

Hi Gang,

After much debate, I have decided to sell off the LX that I
worked so hard to purchase. It has not seen any use, or thought
since I bought my *ist D.

I bought this LX about 4 years back and had it shipped over from
England. Unfortunately it broke down after several months of use. I
believe the problem has to do with the shutter/locking mechanism.
The mechanism is stuck half way in between locked and on. Thus the
camera is unusable as it is right now. I believe the repair to be
simple/relatively inexpensive, however my current financial situation
doesn't allow me to have it fixed before selling. I have a great
variety of accouterments for it also.

Please email if you are interested in the LX or accouterments.

LX focussing problem - update (long)

2006-04-16 Thread Alistair Lax
A couple of months ago I mentioned my LX focus problem, where the top and
bottom of the screen were out of focus in opposite directions. It proved
surprisingly difficult to deal with, although the cause and solution turned
out to be simple in concept and may be of interest.

I took it for a service and was told it was an unusual problem - an ominous
start, as the service didn't sort it. I took it back, and it turned out that
the repair technician had trouble seeing the focus on the screen and relied
on the split image. He then adjusted the angle of the screen holder and
there was a small improvement. However the screen holder was left
dramatically tilted upwards, which didn't seem right. As suggested by
several of you, the most likely option was that the mirror was misaligned. I
noticed it appeared to sit higher than the mirror on my other LX, and the
adjustment lever was also higher. I realised that an incorrectly aligned
mirror would also explain why I sometimes cut off the top of pictures -
perhaps not just my incompetence! So, having scanned the internet and PDML
archives for information ...

I printed out a target of concentric rectangles and made a ground glass
screen consisting of perspex (plexiglass) that sat on the outer film rails
with magic tape strips facing forwards, ie approximately in the film plane.
As predicted, an image that was perfectly centred in the viewfinder sat too
low in the film gate.

Adjusting the mirror position is a nightmare, as the mirror stop is spring
loaded and its resting position is held by a lever that has a pivot and
locking screw. Over a couple of hours the mirror position varied wildly in
either direction, but my technique improved and eventually I got it adjusted
spot-on without either dropping the screwdriver on the shutter curtain or
irreversibly damaging the screwheads.

In comparison, the screen adjustment was simple as it can be done
incrementally. A slight complication is that one of the four screws is about
halfway down one side - the others are in the corners. This is fine if you
want to move it without changing the angle, but requires some calculation if
it needs to be tilted. However within a short time it was level, in focus
right across its plane and the infinity focus was set. I took some photos of
an angled target (as described in http://www.photo.net/learn/focustest/) and
will use that to fine tune the adjustment. Relief! Further relief when I
checked my other LX and found its mirror angle was perfect - I had had that
one serviced at the same time.

I'm sure the focus problem originated from bad service work before I had the
camera. The repair guy pointed out that both cameras were missing seals and
that the mirror buffers were non-standard. It's a pity he didn't think to
check the mirror adjustment.

Now back to actually using them!

thanks to all for your helpful suggestions

2006-03-23 Thread Niko Koskela
I just got a A50/1.7 (i know, in a thread a while ago i said i will not
get more fifties...). I don´t know if the problem is in the lens or the
LX, but when i mount the lens to the bayonet the lens aperture doesn´t
stay wide-open, but closes down to the selected aperture ?? The problem
disappears after i use the DOF -preview lever once. I can hear a click
when i use the DOF -lever and after that everything works perfectly.

Strange thing is that the lens works perfectly on other bodies (KX and
*istD), and other lenses work perfectly on the LX. The only combo that
creates this phenomenon is LX+A50 ?

It´s not a big problem, but it would still be nice if they worked as
they should... Any ideas ?

Another thing. Does someone want new leather for an LX? I have an extra
set of Aki-Asahi´s cowhide leather set in Navy Blue Lizard colour. Aki
sent me two sets (one kit for practising). It´s free for anyone who
wants it.

Kind regards,
Niko

I found the problem. I looked at the lens and the camera bayonet once
more after posting here. I realised the cam on the lens which couples
the aperture with the camera had bent just slightly inwards. It was hard
to notice, it hadn´t bent too much as you might have quessed from the
fact that it worked OK with other bodies right from the beginning.

Thanks for the help ;)

Hah, you beat me to it. I had exactly this problem after I dropped my

2006-03-10 Thread Cesar

Thanks guys!

I had almost forgotten about the LX Gallery. So, I had to go look at it
once again. Awesome!

I took the time to read what I submitted
http://pug.komkon.org/LX_Gallery/lx_b_a.html.

Let me see,
I had three LX back then - I have six now. Two are snake-skinned.
I have added a few finders - I may only lack one or two now.
I have a few extra screens too!
I had only the A50/1.4 as a fast lens. I have since added a 50/1.2,
24/2, 31/1.9, 77/1.8, 85/1.9, 85/1.8, and soon an 85/1.4 - this is from
memory so I could have another fast one rolling around somewhere :-)

The LX is still the first camera I grab when I plan to shoot 35mm film.
Of course I have added a couple of *ist D cameras as well as a pair of
645n and a 67.

Who said this list causes enablement?

I had mine done last year at Pentax USA in Colorado. How much longer they
will service is anyone's guess, but the clock is ticking. It will cost

gets cold (such as being left in the car), the mirror
starts moving slow causing the winder to have a fit
when it can't advance the film when it thinks it can.
(see discussion from a couple weeks ago: LX grouchy

Who knows the LX inside and out and is good at making

wanna touch the LX what with the seals and all.

Yep. Grease has thickened and gotten gummy with age. Camera needs

The remedy is almost certainly relubrication.

Greases change properties over time and become harder. In addition,
they can accumulate particles, both from the environment and wear on
the mechanical parts. Most such particles will be more partial to
moisture than the grease itself, and thus impact the low-temperature
performance.

I've discovered that my LX acts up when it's cold. But
only when cold.

What it's doing resembles the sticky mirror issue,
but the mirror isn't sticking to the bumper at all. So
that's not the case. Pressing the shutter release
causes the mirror to start to move, it gets a few
millimeters off the bumper and then moves very slowly
upwards while the winder complains. Works beautifully
when at room temperature though.

What could be the cause and remedy of this?

Not only that, but I've seen old grease separate in the container.
It kinda turns into oil and a more viscous grease. If something like
that is used in cameras or lenses (I'm not sure it is), it would really
gum up the works with age.

Very typical of a camera in need of a CLA.
The lubricants become sticky and too viscous.
When I buy used Pentax bodies I test them and
then put them in the freezer for a couple of
hours and test them again.
Many that pass at room temp fail when cold.

The lower mirror bumper is not the only cause of sticky mirror, there are some
other elastic rests in the mirror box that are likely deteriorating (turning to
goo) and interfering with the mirror action.

Grease is just oil mixed with soap. Repeated, slow, heat cycles will
cause separation. Normal soap is based on sodium stearate; if you use
calcium stearate you get calcium based grease, lithium stearate gives
you lithium grease. Each gives the grease different properties.
Discussion of the detailed chemistry and additive packages could keep us
going for a while..
