One advantage of living on Highway 9, the main thoroughfare of SLV is that
repairs to the road, power, or comm are prioritized. Unfortunately, there was
so much damage to so many roads on Tuesday that I had many friends who couldn’t
get home. Several towns were cut off.

My neighbor (the one whose house caught the tree last week) called me Tuesday
afternoon and said that he couldn’t get home. They had stopped him just before
the fallen tree, he tried to go around the other way, but those roads were
closed due to fallen trees as well. I told him about the trail from the road
just before where the road block was to the bridge past our houses, and when he
called to tell me that he was able to get home, I told my boss I was leaving
work while I knew that I could still probably get home.

I parked my car at the church, just before the closure and discretely walked
past the person watching the road closure. I figured that if I couldn’t get
past on the road, I could do the trail, but it was dark, muddy and I didn’t
have a good flashlight. I’d gotten 10-20 yards past her when she called out at
me and said I couldn’t go. I said I lived just around the corner, and she said
she’d walk me there.

As I mentioned earlier, before taking photos I grabbed my hard hat and high-viz
vest. About the time I was finishing up, she had just walked someone past,
came up to me and asked if I knew who was in charge.

Well documented. You’re probably lucky it blocked a road. That creates urgency

A chance to play with my new toys

2023-03-22 Thread Larry Colen
I won’t be able to post photos for a bit because I still don’t have internet at
home, other than a cell phone hotspot, from when a tree fell on my neighbor’s
house last Tuesday. Let’s just say that I am not currently thrilled with TPC.

I did get a chance to play with the K-3 III and my 70-200 tonight, and test
their weather proofing, in the rain, as a work crew cut a tree down that had
fallen on the power lines, a few feet from my property line, on the other side
of the house than the tree fell a week ago. We had a power since Sunday at 6PM,
but I didn’t let that make me complacent, I powered down my desktop when I left
for work this morning, because it’s rainy in the Santa Cruz Mountains, and was
supposed to get a little bit wet. So power from Sunday at 6PM until Tuesday at
2PM, that’s like over 40 hours, a guy could get spoiled.

I learned a couple of things about the 3 III tonight. First of all, there’s a
little button in the upper left of the back, which is easy to miss in the dark,
it’s right next to the metering mode button. If you bump it, you won’t be able
to adjust aperture, shutter speed or ISO. If you do so in the rain, in the
dark, when you aren’t familiar with the camera, and the controls inexplicably
stop working you. might mistakenly think that the weather sealing didn’t work
as well as it should, but might be puzzled why they e-dials still worked on the
menus.

I have also learned that as handy as the touch screen controls might be, in the
rain it can get very confused. The photo review and preview stop working and a
bunch of other strange things happen as well.

I also learned that if you put on a hard hat and a high visibility vest people
are a lot more likely to assume that you’re supposed to be where they chewed
you out for being a couple of hours previously.

In the motorsports community there is a saying “the answer is always
miata”.  They are fun to drive, get decent gas mileage and are just a
little bit more reliable than an anvil.  The best racing I have ever
seen is in a class called Spec Miata.  In the last race I did with the
SCCA, I qualified mid grid, a friend was gridded directly in front of
me with a qualifying time .030 seconds faster than mine, the guy next
to me was .030 slower.  So, on a 3 mile (5km) track,  about .060
seconds which works out to about 10ft (3m) separated the qualifying
times of four cars, or two rows of the grid.

Re: New Toys

2022-04-19 Thread Alan C
John, I was a poor school teacher with a VW Beetle at the time. A fellow
teacher offered me the battered, clapped out, oil burning Van for a mere
£25. I had a mate who raced Morris Minors who helped me do a ring job &
fit a hot cam & manifold with twin SU's he had lying around. For the
colour scheme I was inspired by the 1275 Mini Coopers which had started
appearing. It was quite quick off the mark but the top speed was only
about 75 mph - 4.50 diff). The road holding was terrible. With a growing
family I needed something more practical so I sold it & bought a S/H
Morris Oxford S/W.

Re: New Toys

2022-04-18 Thread John Francis

My "uncool" car was extremely practical - a Morris Minor 1000 estate (with the
1100cc engine).
When I left home after graduating from univerity my parents offered me a choice
- I could buy
(for a token price) the Escort estate my father was driving, or take my
mother's car for free.
After discussion with my brother I opted for the moggie, and my brother took
the Escort.

That car was extremely practical, and almost indestructable - when the engine
seized up after
a garage neglected to adequately tighten the lower radiator hose (so all the
coolant leaked)
all I had to do was replace the hose, fill up with water, and wait until the
block cooled.
Its only weakness was that it was pathologically afraid of water - if there was
rain within
two counties it was prone to the dread "water on the points" (because, of
course, it had a
distributor cap manufactured by Lucas Electrical).

I eventually had to get rid of that car when the main box girders of the
chassis rusted out
and became more like U-girders. But by then my brother was about to leave the
country, and
sold me his Triumph Vitesse convertible: ~1800lbs dry weight - less than a
modern F1 car -
and a straight six two-litre engine putting.out almost 100HP (also less than an
F1 car :-)

Then I left the country, too, and ended up in the US some 40 years ago. In the
intervening
years since then I've owned a Fiat 132, a Mustang GT convertible, and a BMW Z4.

This is actually my fourth Miata/Eunos/Mx-5, but my first NB, the others were
all NAs. They have a reputation here of being a “woman’s car”. I’m fine with
them being popular with women, particularly attractive women that I might want
an opportunity to chat with.

In the motorsports community there is a saying “the answer is always miata”.
They are fun to drive, get decent gas mileage and are just a little bit more
reliable than an anvil. The best racing I have ever seen is in a class called
Spec Miata. In the last race I did with the SCCA, I qualified mid grid, a
friend was gridded directly in front of me with a qualifying time .030 seconds
faster than mine, the guy next to me was .030 slower. So, on a 3 mile (5km)
track, about .060 seconds which works out to about 10ft (3m) separated the
qualifying times of four cars, or two rows of the grid.

It's a reminder of a past age, where industrial power and strength is

Well, best choices depend on what you want and already have.
E.g. if you got a notebook, then you don't need big LCD on device,
and neither CD Recorder if you got one in notebook,
for such people top three choices are probably:
1) Archos Gmini 220 [smallest and lightest, but just 20 GB]
2) Vosonic X's Drive II VP2060 [cheapest unit, but no MP3]
3) Jobo Image Tank G2

For those without notebook there are two categories to choose from,
HD based CD based devices. If one has big Compact Flash card
or big Microdrive then I doubt CD recorders are wise choice,
to backup 4 GB microdrive to 700 MB CDs is very slow...

So, to me the top two choices with big LCDs are:
1) Archos AV340 Video Recorder [biggest LCD, plays DivX XviD]
2) FlashTrax SmartDisk [nice big LCD, video playback]

From CD recorders I like best Addonics MFR, since it's also DVD player,
and as someone said, he has A.MFR and a small HDD device, good combo.

I'd only buy portable CD recorder if I had to send copies around.

But if some company comes out with DVD recorder, that would
be much, much better device to choose. One could backup whole
4 GB Microdrive to one DVD media. One could have tons of MP3s
on DVD media, one could have it to watch DVD movies too, etc.

I think any serious field photographer should have two devices:
1. Small and light 12 tablet PC with DVD recorder for final backups
2. Smallest and lightest portable HD based device for field usage

Anyone want to add some other devices and opinions?

There is much more into these devices than specs prices of course :)

Hope this helps to someone good luck with your choices!

Hmmm, based on what Robert said, the Flashtrax is the only one that handles
RAW well (or at all). And I am thinking I want the option to shoot just RAW.
Anyway, I've settled on it, because it seems the best choice (though a bit
more
pricey than some). Eventually, when I save up some funds, that is, I am
pretty
sure that is the one I'll get.

Good to know, thanks. It says in the description it will copy JPEGS and

and it wasn't clear what that data was.

Well, best choices depend on what you want and already have.
E.g. if you got a notebook, then you don't need big LCD on device,
and neither CD Recorder if you got one in notebook,

That depends on whether you carry your notebook everywhere. I don't
(it's too large, too heavy, and too power-hungry for that). I am
considering buying a FlashTrax to put in the pocket of my photo vest,
although I'm a little concerned that it too is overly power-hungry.

Even if you have a notebook with a CD burner, you might still want
to consider a copy-to-CD unit; if you are using your notebook as an
editing station for immediate image use you don't want to try burning
a CD at the same time.

I think any serious field photographer should have two devices:
 1. Small and light 12 tablet PC with DVD recorder for final backups
 2. Smallest and lightest portable HD based device for field usage

A 12 screen certainly isn't all that great for an editing station.
I'm still not convinced that a tablet PC works as a general-purpose
notebook replacement. It's great for some things, but I think that
the compromises made to keep them small and light take away too much.
And, of course, they do cost quite a bit more.

The Fujitsu DynaMo 640 Photo kan trasfer 12 Mb/sec.
Unloading a 512 Mb card should then take less than 1 minute (43 secs).
If you are using two RAM cards you can easily empty one onto the MO-disc
while shooting photograps on the other.

Carrying three MOs to dump each 2GB CF card seems a little impractical to me,

This link goes to a GMini 120.

There are many many similar gadgets. I would recommend doing a search
on dpreview's (http://www.dpreview.com) storage forum for any device that
you are considering.

I'll probably pick up a GMini 220 at some point. They have somewhat
mixed reviews though. Specifically the battery is not field replacable,
which really limits how many times you can use it on a trip unless
you have access to AC power.

Currently I'm using a 4g Microdrive and I expect this to keep me going
through the summer. They are $200 if you buy a Creative Labs MuVo2
and remove the drive. I bought my MuVo2 from JR Music World. They
are backordered everywhere, but JR got me the unit in about two weeks
which wasn't too bad.

With the 4gb Microdrive you get about 280 RAW pictures or 990+ L***

I'm using an X-Drive II (as are a few people here) with an 80GB drive, it was
much less expensive than any other similar products but it is pretty basic, no
bells and whistles. It is a USB2 device and connected to my PC via USB2
interface it can sustain about 4.3MB/s from a card of the integrated HDD.
However the transfer speed from the card to the integrated HDD is less
spectacular, just over 1MB/s so a full 2GB card takes about 32 minutes. The
internal L-ion rechargable battery is supposed to have a 6 hour life but I
suspect it's somewhat shorter than this, I haven't yet tempted fate to find
out.

I think the gmini does have a screen, albeit a very low res mono one.
It also has a CF slot. It wont view RAW files though - only flashtrax
does that. I think the Gmini does have better battery life than the
flashtrax though, but wont play mp3s or AVIs if that is of interest
(whereas flashtrax will).

The gmini is a cheap and cheerful job which does basic file holding, is
fairly small and allows you to preview jpgs to make sure the file is
intact.

The flashtrax has a better screen, bigger disc, views RAW files, plays
mp3s AVIs and has superlative support from the manufacturer (Archos is
poor in this area I believe).

It's a toss up between better functionality and less money I think...
If you use RAW there is no choice IMO.

Yeah, but, you know, the manufacturers' don't call these things all by the

In google and Amazon I plug in portable drive and get some. But it would be

Hmmm, based on what Robert said, the Flashtrax is the only one that handles
RAW well (or at all). And I am thinking I want the option to shoot just RAW.
Anyway, I've settled on it, because it seems the best choice (though a bit more
pricey than some). Eventually, when I save up some funds, that is, I am pretty
sure that is the one I'll get.

Good to know, thanks. It says in the description it will copy JPEGS and DATA,

My new toys and interesting trivia

2003-07-30 Thread Bill Owens
Some of you may remember my yard sale Mamiya Super 23 and Metz 45 CT1. The
Mamiya has been converted into a 500mm mirror lens. Although it says
Quantaray, it's the Samyang Keppler mentions in the latest edition of Pop
Photo. I haven't had a chance to do more that play with it in the yard yet,
but seems to be pretty decent. There is a fair amount of fall off around the
edges, but, condidering what it is, the colors and sharpness are pretty
good. If I'm able to keep bright highlights out of the bokeh areas, the
doughnuts are not visible.

I've been using it on the P30t, and discovered something interesting about
it. Although the manual says a cable switch is necessary to use the cable
release socket (mounted on the side of the lens mount), I've found that a
standard, run of the mill cable release works just fine. I'm guessing that
what happens is that when depressed, the circuit is completed just like a PC
flash terminal. There's no give, just depress the release and the shutter
fires.

I've been using two very ordinary cable releases with my P30T since it
arrived and have had no problems. I guess they make electrical contact. The
manual say's use a Switch OR Cable Release 50 and adds cable release 30
won't work.

Re: Macro and extension tubes, was: Re: New Toys

2002-08-16 Thread Anthony Farr

Bill,

Full helicoid extension on the 100/4 macro gives 1:2 magnification and
requires plus one stop exposure correction. Adding the 50mm tube permits a
magnification range from 1:2 when the focus ring is on infinity (the same as
the fully extended lens with no tube) to 1:1 when the helicoid is fully
extended. At 1:1 the exposure correction is plus 2 stops. This assumes
that you're not using TTL metering which would be more or less self
correcting. However, beware of the effect of mirror cutoff at long
extensions if your cameras meter is above the screen (less light will get to
the finder than to the film, so the meter will cause overexposure). Below
the mirror or OTF meter cells won't be affected by mirror cutoff.

The matched extension tubes for the old macro lenses would be nice to have
for my two M series macro lenses. Alas I have to make do with the set of
three manual tubes with the odd lengths that Pentax in their wisdom chose,
perhaps they were getting into the Limited frame of mind as long ago as
that.

Anthony Farr

Which brings another question to my feeble mind. Would adding an
additional
50mm of extension to a lens that is already extended increase exposure by
one stop, or is this too simple to be feasible? :-)

To clarify any confusion I may have caused, TTL metering DOES NOT eliminate
the loss of exposure that goes with lens extension, it simply corrects for
the loss without requiring any input from the photographer.

Wouldn't an extension tube have to give enough extension to extend the
lens
to 100mm (in this case)? I'm under the impression that it takes enough
extension to equal the focal length to get 1:1. Or something like that :-)

Bill;

Adding extension by whatever means increases exposure. For example, my
vivitar S1 105/2.5 has 100mm of built in extension for 1:1 magnification. As
I focus closer the exposure changes, ie f2.5 at infinity 1.5 - 2 stops
difference at close focus. I can then add more extension via tubes or
bellows or whatever and this would change the exposure again.

I've learned to rely on the LX's TTL meter and just compensate for tonal
variation. If you use a handheld meter the calculations become a nightmare.

William and all...
Back from my trip to the camera store. I didn't know they had so many
battery alternatives!
These guys had sealed Wein (air-zinc) cells that replace the 625
mercury cells, as well as 1.5 v. Varta (German) size 625 alkalines,
called V625U, that fit the Spotmatic F perfectly.
And yes, I put one in my F and it works like a champ!
No more fussing around with stop gap measures.

I know what I'm doing this weekend! ;^)
Thing is, my previous (and still) main camera is my ME. While that
takes K-mount lenses, I only have two of that breed, but all my other
lenses are M-42, which is perfect for the Spotmatic.

As was my intention, I made out on this deal. I now have two Pentax
bodies and plenty of lenses.

Thanks for everyone's help.

BTW, I noticed that on this list there are an equal number of folks
who use Spotmatic Fs and MEs ~ 42 each.
Nice to know there are others with good taste here too!

Uh, Keith Do ya suppose that the battery cover is engaging on the
O-ring (which it probably is), then pushing down enough on that engaged
O-ring as you screw in the cover, such that the positive metal contact on
the battery case is not even making contact with the inside surface of the
cover? Before surrendering to the repairman, I'd be tempted to find a
larger button cell that will fit in the compartment properly. Just the
other day, somebody mentioned a currently manufactured size that fits --
maybe your local office supply store would be a good place to check, since
Office Depot seems to carry a good selection around here (Rochester, NY).
Or, use the O-ring, but stuff a little wad of foil between the top of the
battery and the inside surface of the door?

Good luck! Let us know how you make out.

Good onya, Butch!
The only phrase that comes to mind is, got batteries?
Or is that one of those later Pentaxes that take readily available
batteries?

Re: New Toys

2002-08-14 Thread Keith Whaley

I went in for an LR44 the other day, and they gave me an A76. Package
says it's an acceptable alternative.
Anyhow, that's good to hear.

My recently purchased Spotmatic F doesn't seem to work with my kludged
up but well-fit A76 battery. It should have, if all that's wrong is no
battery, so I'm guessing there's something more fundamental wrong with
it. Sighhh. If it needs that kind of attention, there goe$ a great
purchase deal!
But still, it's a beautiful camera I'll keep it if it can be brought back...

The previous owner did say that it had sat around in it's case,
unused, for some 30+ years. Maybe it just needs a proper CLA?

Thanks for the info on the K1000, David.

Hah! That's the first thing I thought of. I had that + on the inside
of the cover engraved in my mind!

I suspect what I'll do before I give it up to the camera repairman is
to remove the battery and o-ring I'd stuffed in there, and clean the
cover's insides well, as well as the spring contact inside the body.
They both looked clean, but another gentle rubbing with a pencil
eraser and some cleaner can't hurt.

You might also gently lift the contact at the bottom of the battery holder
and make
sure that the new battery is making positive contact with the cover.

Re: New Toys

2002-08-14 Thread Fred

After a couple minutes of fiddling around (it's 11:30 PM and I've
been up since 6 AM) I realized that what I had was the 1:1 adapter
for the 100/4 M macro (somewhat rare and pricey?)

Hmmm... I was not aware of any 1:1 adapter for any Pentax 100mm
macro. (But I was not aware does not preclude the actual
existence of same - g.) Are you sure it's not actually a TC or an
extension tube? (I think a 50mm - I'm not sure of the exact length
- extension tube is typically used to give 1:1 with some of the
100mm macros.) What markings (if any) does it have? Does it have
any internal glass (as opposed to a hollow extension tube)?

Re: New Toys

2002-08-14 Thread Keith Whaley

It also occurs to me the rubber o-ring might be exerting a little too
much force on the battery, and keeping it away from good contact with
the cover...
Both items worth looking at.
I will make that a project today.

Thanks, keith whaley
