This sort of cheap plastic gear appears to be all the rage, lately. See
also the Long Weekend camera 'designed' by Flemish/American
photographer/influencer Willem Verbeek:

They even appear to all take the same kind of photos... ;-)

OT Non-Pentax camera review - Camp Snap

2024-07-11 Thread Scott Loveless
OK, "review" is probably optimistic. I got this camera a couple days
ago and have really been enjoying it.

https://photos.app.goo.gl/7ysAmiSTJhFwDTQr5

This is the Camp Snap camera. It was designed to be a cheap (really
cheap) alternative to disposable film cameras that a parent could send
to camp with their kids. My daughter gave me one for my birthday and
I've been carrying it around taking horrible pictures for the last few
days. Take a look at the photo album for a couple sample photos I took
while walking the dog this morning, along with a few photos of the
camera itself. I'll add a few more shortly. 2.54cm per inch, for
those of you in less civilized places...

The not so good:
It's cheap, as in cheaply made. The textured grip on the front is
cheap adhesive plastic and has already started to peel at the corners.
On the plus side, I anticipate replacing it with fun colors and
designs in the not-so-distant future. The body is cheap plastic and
really does feel like a 90s drug store disposable.

The viewfinder is more of a suggestion. Even without glasses on and my
face pressed right up against it, it might show 60% of what's actually
going to be captured. The best way to work with this is to simply put
the part of your subject that you want in the middle, in the middle,
and then pray. Adjust in post. In addition to the severe crop, the
viewfinder is fuzzy. It looks out of focus all the time, regardless of
the distance from the subject.

Resulting images are super grainy in low-light situations. This was
expected. I'll try to add some more photos to the album in a bit
showing this.

There's an annoying double beep when turning the camera on, a single
beep when turning it off, and a fake shutter noise when taking a
picture. There is no way to disable these sounds. I may put some tape
on the speaker.

The not so bad:
There are no "settings" that can be adjusted in the camera itself. In
fact, there are two controls on the camera. The shutter release is
also the power button. Long press to turn it off or on, and a short
press to take a picture. There's a 3 position switch for the flash.
On/Off/Auto. That's it. There is no other way to manipulate the camera
while in use. Some might see this as crippling, but I think it's
perfect considering the camera's intended use.

The "settings" are adjusted by flashing a new firmware to the camera.
This is easy to do and clearly documented on their support site.
Currently, there are 3 options: standard, vintage, and black & white.
The two photos in the album were taken with the vintage firmware. It
makes the photos a bit greener than I'd like. I intend to try the B
firmware soon. There were apparently earlier firmware versions that
disabled the beeps and clicks, but they don't seem to be available at
the moment. I'd like to know more about this, and think it would be
really cool if they published some instructions for editing the
firmware.

The camera isn't aware of rotation. If you take a vertical photo,
you'll need to rotate it later on your computer.

It's literally point and shoot. No thinking, no focusing, heck, no
composing. It's light, and it's not uncomfortable to hold. The only
display is a photo counter on the back. They state about 500 pictures
on a charge. Once the card is wiped, the counter resets. This also
starts the file naming over. There are no date/time stamps. You have
to figure this out for yourself when copying them over to a PC. I'm
working on a script to automagically do some of this for me.

Speaking of which, it connects to your computer or phone with a USB-C
cable. Not some janky leftover mini-USB garbage like every other cheap
POS electronic device. USB-C. That's really cool.

The camera comes with an SD card pre-installed. It's behind a screwed
on plate. I assume it can be replaced, but I haven't tried.

The good:
It fits in my pocket. It's cheap (to buy), costing about the same as 3
disposable 35mm cameras and processing. This is the most fun I've had
with a camera in a long, long time. Highly recommended.

Nope, it was on a trail, shot with the 18-270 at 270, I was a safe distance

Re: Partially OT, 2nd quarter faves

2024-07-02 Thread Rick Womer
Larry, these are very nice. I have some questions:

Did you California types have a partial solar eclipse that allowed you to take
the first photo? It’s very nice.

About the rattlesnake and lizard: I hope the snake was behind glass! If so, how
did you shoot it with no glare at all?

The Coors can shot is just kind of sad. So many people are slobs. We’ve done a
lot of hiking in the White Mountains in New Hampshire, and the amount of trash
we’ve sometimes hauled out has been remarkable.

The second tractor pic, and the shot of the cellist, are both excellent. The
cellist’s concentration really shows. I like the brass ensemble too.

Cheers,

Rick

Status Update K-3 repairs and OT photos

2024-05-31 Thread Larry Colen
I decided that since the OM-5 works OK for carrying on my bike, I was better
off getting the K-3III repaired while I'm in a photographic lull, lest I find
something else critical that is wrong when I absolutely need it, and then find
out that it'll take weeks or months to get it repaired. So, I sent it to
Precision, their estimate is now up to $683, and it turns out that the parts
are on back order for a week or two. So, yeah.

I've had a few chances to go on bike rides and am becoming more familiar with
the OM-5. It really does make me appreciate the Pentax UI. A few years back I
commented that when processing photos, comparing my APS Pentax with a friend's
full frame Nikon, I could get similar quality with the Pentax, but that the
files "felt more brittle". I'm running into the same thing with the OM-5, only
more so, it feels like I have very little extra dynamic range to work with.

On my bike ride Monday, I found a place of Reche canyon where someone has
collected a bunch of old dead tractors and just has them sitting around, and
rather than a No Trespassing sign, his signs simply say that if you get hurt,
you can't blame him. I had just photographed this yellow tractor when a bright
pink "honey bucket" truck was driving past, so I had to grab another shot:

In other news, I needed to upgrade my local storage and a friend offered me a
QNAP 435A 4-bay NAS. I bought it, and some refurb/returned 16T drives off
Amazon. With RAID 5 it gives me almost 43 TB, which is nice, about twice my
current photo library. I'm trying to point my Lightroom Library at it, and I
dunno if it is the QNAP, my trashcan mac, or whether using a NAS over a 1G net

If they are all in the same parent folder, you should be able to copy that and
move it, if not you should be able to select them all at once and copy them.

You could also try using Carbon Copy Cloner.

from the console you could do
mkdir /Volumes/newdrive/photofolder
cp -pr * /Volumes/newdrive/photofolder

This may have been mentioned already, but if you run Disk Utility (it's in
Applications / Utilities) do they appear in the sidebar? If greyed out you can
right-click on them and select "mount". I do this with my external SSD as I
like to leave it plugged in but not mounted unless I'm actually using it. My
Time Machine drives are always physically disconnected when I'm not using them.

I had problems with my mac crashing and found out that there is a related
problem with sleep mode on some macs. I don't remember details as to year of
mac or OS level, other than it applied to mine.

You may wish to check your energy savings settings on your new iMac, to
see if you have the external drives set to sleep when not in use. It
could be, depending on the drive, that they go to sleep and vanish from
the sidebar.

As always, if you change a setting, restarting the computer is the next

Hi Dave,

You might have a format problem with the older drives. If there’s enough free
space on one to hold all the files, you might want to move them over and
reformat the empty drive. Then, repeat with the other drive. Or simply by a
hard rive of 2T or more and move the files to that drive, then reformat the
empty drives.

Re: OT. OM-5 first impressions

2024-05-14 Thread Larry Colen
Another weird thing about the camera I noticed on my hike is that if you're
shooting in "non-silent" mode, it doesn't just make the shutter sound with a
speaker, there's some haptic bump to the camera. I guess if what you care
about is whether it feels like a film camera that's nice, if however you care
about image sharpness, then something that bumps the camera around while you're
taking photos can't be good.

I wasn't planning on it, but I'll try to give it a try. If I really care enough
about image quality on a shot to do that, I'll use my K-1. Although in
retrospect, it might actually make a stop or two difference in noise/dynamic
range.

I was debating which to get and the impression I got (which is why I got the
OM-5), is that if you don't have either, it's worth while buying the OM-5, but
it's not worth trading in for. Unless of course you want an excuse to get a
new camera. :-)

I use an Olympus OM-D EM1 mark II as a video camera (only) but in conjunction

I use it on conjunction with manual lenses and I have the focus peaking set on

If you like the OM-1, then I suspect the OM-5 would be just fine for you. I
also suspect that a lot of things that take the shine off for me aren’t things
that come up for you as often. My shooting needs are generally very different
from yours. If you don’t do a lot of bracketing of raw files, then my
complaints there are totally irrelevant, and even so may not be something that
bothers you.

>
> I'll be interested to see how you feel about it after a week or two.

This afternoon/evening we bopped by the Getty to play with cameras. As things
got darker I ended up needing to lean on the ISO a bit harder, it’ll be
interesting to see how the images turn out. On a quick look on my laptop, they
seem to be usable at 6400.

I was shooting with the 25/0.95 I bought from Boris and focus peaking went away
in Manual Focus mode. I put one of the autofocus lenses on, and focus peaking
worked fine. So, for some reason, manual focus assist does not work on manual
focus only lenses.

As we were leaving, I saw someone else waiting for the tram with a small retro
looking camera, thinking that it might be another Oly I took a closer look, it
was a Pentax MX! I did tell him about PDML, he found the camera in his dad’s
attic and is interested in learning more about photography in general and the
camera in particular.

Hmm.

I was considering getting an OM-5 as a backup/lighter alternative;
I still feel nervous going anywhere with only a single camera body,
even though I'v never yet had a digital camera body fail on me
(and, in 50 years, only had two mechanical failures; once when my
MX motor drive bent a drive shaft in my MX, and once when my PZ-1p
objected to being used in rain, and took some time off to dry out.
I don't count my MZ-S objecting to having its lens mount knocked
off when I slipped climbing down from a photo tower and banged it
hard against an upright - that was entirely my own fault).

I suspect 'adequate' might still serve my purpose, although I will
admit that I was verging towards the slightly newer OM-D E-M5 Mk III.

I'll be interested to see how you feel about it after a week or two.

OT. OM-5 first impressions

2024-05-11 Thread Larry Colen
After the weight of my new (13 months) K3III in my handlebar bag caused my bike
to fall over and but the Smart Function knob, I looked into OM-5s again. The
price had dropped below my pain point, and since thanks to online shopping
there aren’t any convenient camera stores to look at them, I bought on on
Amazon, and if I don’t like it I’ll feel no guilt over returning it.

My one word review:
Adequate

My basic review of the Lumix GH3 was that I loved the size, was unimpressed by
the sensor/image quality and hated the UI.

The OM-5 is the same size, seems to have a substantially better sensor, and the
UI is better but really makes me appreciate my Pentax cameras. I would not
want one as my primary camera, but for something light and convenient to carry,
if not use, it’ll work.

One example of something that I do on my pentax bodies that I can’t quite do on
the OM 5 is my nominal shooting modes are two stop bracketing, either nominal
and -2, or three stops shot in order of -2, nominal and +2. First of all, with
the OM, I get at most one stop per frame, it also always shoots nominal first.
Another difference is that with the Pentax, one press of the shutter shoots all
of the bracket frames at once.

In daylight, the EVF, frankly, looks like shit. It is little better than
giving me the shape of the objects in the frame. I recognize that there are
advantages of EVF, particularly in low light, for manual focusing, focus
peaking is nice to have, and other info, but for the experience of photography,
not ready for prime, or even zoom, time.

Also the camera’s biggest strength is also a weakness, the small size makes it
awkward to shoot with, even with my tiny hands.

Battery life seems mediocre, I’m used to running on Pentax batteries for hours,
and this seems to be running low fairly quickly, but batteries are light and
can be bought cheaply.

So, I tried using the brush tool to paint in the tripod head so that
Photoshop had a blank slate to work with and that seemed to work better.

Generative fill is something akin to playing the slots, you can get a

Re: OT Photoshop 2024 help

2024-02-05 Thread Bill
I opened the image in Photoshop, drew quite loosely around the tripod
head with the lasso tool, then edit/generative fill and clicked fill
with nothing in the dialogue box.

If you do too tight a selection Photoshop will screw it up, it needs
surrounding detail to create the fill so you need to give it plenty of
elbow room. The selection I gave it was about the same size as the globe.

My understanding is that generative fill in it's present form creates
everything at a maximum resolution of 1024x1024. The people who know
more than me seem to be using fixed size boxes at that size and then
doing multiple passes with generative fill with higher resolution images.

One of the things you might have received with your subscription is
access to Photoshop Beta which is the test bed for Photoshop, so new
features appear there and as they are perfected they then trickle into
Photoshop 24 as updates.

For example, the image I posted was done on Photoshop Beta version 25.0.0

observation when I lived on top of a not-too-light-polluted hill and could just
roll the scopes out to the driveway to observe), since we moved to the
Sacramento area, the combination of light pollution (around Bortle 7 for anyone
who knows what that means), and the increasing difficulty of lugging them out
to set up had pretty much ended observation for me (and I was never
particularly interested in the intricacies of astrophotography).

Then, a few months ago, I acquired a small, inexpensive, “robotic” scope for
what is called EAA (electronically assisted astronomy) that promises the
ability to visually observe in light-polluted areas (albeit on the screen of a
phone or tablet) as well as offer much simplified photography. Here are a few
of my first results:

M33 Galaxy in Triangulum:https://flic.kr/p/2pgYEEb

NGC 7635 Bubble Nebula in Cassiopeia:https://flic.kr/p/2prm5Qg

NGC 1499 California Nebula in Perseus:https://flic.kr/p/2prkrFu

This little gizmo has only a 50mm (~2 in) objective (which is tiny for deep sky
objects) and has the ability, controlled by a phone or tablet, to automatically
find and slew to whatever object you tell it to and begin taking a series of 10
second exposures. Let it keep doing this as long as you want and watch the
object appear on the phone or tablet with more and more detail as the
successive exposures are stacked and processed. I did do some post-processing
on these, but as I have exactly zero experience with astrophotography, it’s
pretty primitive compared to what’s possible.

So, a telescope with a built-in computer-controlled alt/az mount, a digital astro-camera, auto-focuser, dew heater, multiple filters, small carbon-fiber tripod and a fairly nice case, for about $500.

We truly live in the future.

Ios and Android devices using Google Maps are incapable of mimicking the
desktop interface, so no you can’t do that. The only option you have is to
select a route and amend it by clicking on the three little dots next to ‘your
location’ and ‘add stop’ that will allow you to select a new ‘waypoint’ and so
allowing you to modify the route. It may take some time :-)

Thanks all, the version Matt was using showed you can switch from cloud to

Re: OT: Lightroom naming help

2023-12-08 Thread Stanley Halpin
I won’t claim to be an expert on this. I use LR Classic, currently at ver
13.0.1. My current images and catalog are on my computers HD, and backed up on
external HDs. I keep older images on external HDs.

LR (not LR Classic) is web based. You can put images onto your computer HD, but
the working assumption is that they are stored in the Adobe cloud. The editing
tools on LR are different and seem less useful IMHO than those in LR Classic. I
think LR would be great for someone mostly using their phone as a camera.

I sometimes use LR when traveling, and then transfer the images to my computer
at home and import them into LR Classic.
That is a complicated not very useful workflow, and so I have started either
talking my computer with me when I travel, or I wait to review/edit/post any
images untilI am back home. (My one computer is a 2021 MacBook Pro; when at
home it connects to a 27” monitor.)

My basic monthly subscription includes LR, LR Classic, Photoshop, some other
Adobe stuff, and some online storage in the Adobe Cloud. I have no idea the
pricing options, but back when I shifted from LR v.6, the annual cost for the
bundle was about the same as I was paying each year to upgrade from 4 to 5 to 6…

Re: OT: Lightroom naming help

2023-12-08 Thread Toine
Yes Lightroom Classic (LrC) is what you want. Lightroom (Lr) needs a real
cloud subscription (1 Tb), It also works with Lightroom Mobile. And all 3
can work together in the cloud.
Lightroom Classic is the one, the rest is nice (and expensive)

For desktop editing you should get a subscription for Lightroom Classic with
Photoshop. This is the cheapest option for which get only 20 GB cloud storage.
You will be pleased with all the new features in Lightroom Classic compared to
Lightroom version 6.
I wouldn't look any further unless you only want to work in the cloud.

So I now have the black screen of death on my mid 2010 iMac running OS

anything. Call to local reseller/ repair shop suggests the graphic card
issue. I have had issues this year with it just randomly turning off.

They are looking for stock but I can muddle along with my iPad 9th
generation for email, fb, and bill paying for now, Operating system all
caught up on the iPad and phone, always happens when you finally get the

OT: new phone comparo

2023-11-12 Thread Larry Colen
Last week I got Pixeleighted, a Pixel 8 Pro. My Pixel 3XL still works OK, but
they've stopped updating the software, some apps are starting to run a bit
roughly, and I just don't have the time to deal with jail breaking it and
running something like cyanogenmod. One of my motivations for the upgrade was
the improved camera, or rather cameras. I will say right off the bat, that it
is going to take some time to learn how to use it. I tried to set it up, and
it got in a mode where every time I took a picture it would take photos for
several seconds or something. On the other hand, it does have a mode where you
can manually set shutter speed and ISO, possibly even manually focus it.

I also managed to go for a bike ride today, my first one in several months.
I've finally unpacked enough at the new place that I can take a few hours off
for something like a bike ride.

When I stopped to take some photos with the u43 Lumix, GX9 I spontaneously
decided to try some side by sides with the phone. With the 14-150 at 14mm, it
was a very similar angle of view to the phone at "1x", though you can tell the
difference between them by the aspect ratio.

This album has photos made from the phone jpeg, dng and the Lumix raw files.
Pretty much the only processing done was raw conversion, and autotoning of the
Lumix raw files

https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/albums/72177720312632275

Summary:
Once I learn the gear, I should be able to get adequate photos with either of
them, but their main advantages are convenience, if I really care about image
quality, I'll use one of my Pentax cameras.

If it's all 4x6 prints, the low end Epson would probably be the best bet

The software bundled with the scanner should also be good enough.

The main thing is scanning takes time.

I have used ScanCafe for slides, no complaints.
But also I do have the Epson v 39 that has been mentioned, I use it mostly for
documents. But I think it is ok for old family prints. Tomorrow I’ll scan and
post an old family print which I’ll do at 100, 200, 300, 600, 1200, 2400, 3600…
We’ll see.

The advantage of using a hacksaw to modify camera gear has been discussed
before. I got myself a 3D printer and solved a few camera gear puzzles with
3d printed plastic parts:

Re: OT: Focus stacked flower with no Rick at all.

2023-10-25 Thread Bill
Hi Henk, it was shot outside but in a very sheltered area. According to
the time stamps on the files, it took just over 3 minutes to photograph
the stack, so about one frame per second on average.
Automatic focus stack has very quickly become a must have feature for me
for a new camera. When the K1 replacement comes along (hopefully before
I've shuffled off) I'm really hoping they include it as a feature.

The Fuji lenses are superb, but the 80/2.8 stands out as exceptional.

thanks for looking and your kind comments are appreciated.

OT as no Pentax equipment was used for this image.

One of the features built into the X-T5 is focus stacking, a tool that I
am finding valuable for macro work.

This was shot with the Fuji 80/2.8 macro at f4. It is comprised of 201
stacked images, which I admit is just silly.
