Re: October PUG is up

2024-10-11 Thread Alan C
You know, Ralf, in the first 4 centuries when the Romans were in
Britain, Europe was very warm. The Romans were able to grow grapes as
far north as York. The human population was much smaller than today &
only coal,  peat & wood were used for energy so the human contribution
would have been very low. Much less livestock too. A Solar Cycle must
have played a part too but there are no proper records. Then in 404 came
the big freeze, The Huns were able to cross the frozen Rhine in huge
numbers which ultimately led to the collapse of the Roman Empire. The
Romans hurriedly left Britain, never to return. The masses left behind
had been well schooled in governance so a semblance of civilisation
remained. One stupid thing they did was to steal all the stones from the
Roman Roads for building purposes, leading to misery on the wet, muddy
roads for centuries.

Fast forward to the present day. The human & animal population is
massive by comparison - a big source of methane Together with Freons &
suchlike a major cause of global warming, much worse that all the CO2
which is a weak green house gas. One thing which is seldom mentioned is
the CO2 contribution from limestone during cement manufacture, I suggest
there is another warm solar cycle too. Man seems to be hell bent on self
destruction with a bunch off people only interested in profits i/c.  But
nature will sort things out. Perhaps Covid was a sort of final warning?

Without a doubt, there is Global Warning!

Re: October PUG is up

2020-10-09 Thread ann sanfedele

Thanks Christine , and I agree with you on Henk's and told him so already..
as to the quilts... - it was a fabulous exhibit - this is the only shot
I have from it because I loaded it to SmUGMUG.. the rest were lost when
I had a little crash on the old 'puter - about a years worth of images
.. my fault entirely from moving things around wrong on the hard drive
and then fragging.. some recovery but not all .  much too expensive to
try for more.  I comforted myself that most of what I felt was worth
keeping had been uploaded to Smugmug or still existed on a cf card or an
external drive.

Excellent gallery. All are great. I have a weak spot for dragonflies

Once again I missed the deadline.

Would it be an idea to have high res photos? If possible with the
PhotoSwipe viewer. The galleries are always high quality, 800px
reduces the viewing pleasure a little.
I'm happy to help if needed.

Once again, Brian, thank you for all the hard work and talent you devote to
keeping the PUG one of the best aspects of this list!

It's a small gallery, but quite a few excellent images there. My favorite
is Foggy Beach
by Patrick Temmerman, a powerful minimalist composition. A close second,
for me, is
Last Cast by Don Guthrie. The color is captivating, and the framing of the
main action by tree limbs is just perfect. I have tried similar shots of
fishermen at sunset, but none approach the magic Don's image displays.

Looking at it again, I realize there is a typo there, it was meant to read:
'Treading in circles'

It does not stand out well enough (got too small), but the 'circular' in this
image
was in the lower right hand, where the mill-operator (milnner ?) is actually
standing IN the large wheel that makes the whole windmill turn arround,
to direct it into the wind.

He is standing on the spokes to use his body-weight to make
turning the wheel a bit easier ...

Filip's image is of course the winner, by far. Not only is it well done,
and quite funny, but it has a two-headed nekkid woman hidden in there.
There rest of us combined couldn't come up with even one regular nekkid
lady.
Rick's banana is also very clever, humorous, well composed and full of
pleasing color. A great second banana to Filip's bathroom.

Re: October PUG is up

2010-10-24 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Wonderful job, Scott. Thanks again for all your efforts on our
behalf. I'm sure the panoramas made this gallery quite tricky.

It is certainly a wonderful group of images. There are all excellent,
to my eye, but my personal favorites are:

Checkers, by Toine Kuiper: a very effective rendering of a tricky subject.

Infinity, by Jan Willem: I've been there, and tried with little
success to get that image, and you really nailed it!

Chillon by Jorge Zaven Kurkdjian: You really caught the soul of my
favorite castle.

Congratulations to all the contributors.

some lovely stuff there - really nice. I was particularly drawn to Sasha's
photo, for 2 reasons. First I like the composition, the 2 tracks and the way
it leads to the fog. Second, it reminds me of a part of Dorset in England
that I know and have photographed, which is the setting for a great Thomas
Hardy short story called The Melancholy Hussar. The true story is told here:

October PUG is up

2010-10-24 Thread Scott Loveless
It's here: http://pug.komkon.org/10oct/index.html or here:
http://pug.komkon.org/ Sorry for the delay.

I had to do a few things differently this time to accommodate the
dimensions of the photo. Most of the changes will be obvious, once
you take a look at the gallery. One thing that might not be all that
obvious is the "download original" link near the bottom right of each
photo. I've never included this before and won't again.

19 photos. Enjoy.

Before my ego gets too big, I thought I'd fill you in on how it's put
together.

The form is javascript. It bundles your photo and the fields into a
nicely formatted little email message and sends it to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] I basically drag the photo into jAlbum and then
copy the text over. Each entry requires a little manual editing of the
text.

I use a jAlbum template called Chameleon, tweaked a bit to meet our
needs. There is at least one other PDMLer using jAlbum. It's free and
very similar to Breeze Browser. Breeze Browser is more flexible and has
more options, but the latest version of jAlbum fixed some formatting
problems I was having, so I'm satisfied with it at this point. If you
compare this month's PUG to the last few, you'll see that I was able to
separate the photo title from the camera info and description simply
with tags. This wasn't possible before with the Chameleon template.
(If it was, I wasn't smart enough to figure it out.) The templates
that allowed standard HTML tags looked horrible, IMHO.

I spent a lot of time exploring alternates to the Chameleon template for
the October PUG, thinking I had something that would work, only to find
out that something like navigation sucked, or image resizing didn't work
quite right. Once I realized that the latest version of jAlbum did what
I wanted, it really only took about 3 hours to put the PUG together.

Navigation. You have three options for navigating the photos. There
are left and right arrow buttons at the top. Thumbnails of the last few
and next few photos are on the left and right of the current slide. If
you hover your mouse over the slide you'll notice that it's divided into
three sections - previous photo, index, and next photo. Opening the
slides in the same window as the index pages is an option I really like.
I personally despise links that force a new tab or window. The old
PUG style wasn't too bad, though. Once you clicked a thumbnail, and the
new window opened, you could use the navigation buttons from there. I
just like to keep everything in the same window, and no one has
complained about it.

I currently have one submission for the November PUG. And it's not
themed. Get on it. Otherwise, Carrot Top impersonations will follow.

How nice to see so many submitters! Outstanding gallery.

Yes, I like Dave's water shot too, lovely lines and colors, and Tom's heron,
lovely colors. Many are outstanding, and some of those I have seen before.
So I mention two I haven't seen before.

I like the new format, Scott. Before each picture had to be opened and
closed individually, as a separate web page, which was pain. Now between
arrows
and index it is much easier to see them all.

Thanks for your efforts. It was worth the wait.

Some wonderful images there. I particularly like:

Frosted Fall Colors by Kenneth Waller - wonderful colours against the black
background.

Waterbos by Henk Terhell - very moody

Frozen Color by Walt Hamler - very innovative

Seasons End by Thomas Cakalic - almost looks like a painting

First Fallen Leaf by frank theriault - see, Frank, you can work well in colour!

Found Fakery by Cymen Vig - love the contrast in foliage colours

Heron at dusk by Tom Reese - beautiful and well composed.

But they're all good. An excellent gallery!

Cheers

Some excellent stuff - I particulary like the last one, showing the range of
leaves from living to dead.

Have you tweaked the gallery appearance since last time? I still am not a fan
of the colour scheme but it seems more pleasant to use.

PUG's up. Sorry for the delay. http://pug.komkon.org/ November's

We have a large field this month. 35 damn fine photos. I guess you

I fixed the glitch with the file extensions being case sensitive, so
that shouldn't be a problem anymore. Also, if you decide you don't like
