You should be able to. The drop down menu may not make that clear.

I think .docx was introduced with Office/Word 2003. If you choose "save
as" an Office/Word 2000 or Office/Word 97 document it should be a .doc
file.

Nope, Office 2003 was my last purchased version and it doesn't natively
support docx files. Gotta download an import filter which then alters
the files so that they lose functionality. Not that I want a lot of
functionality in a word processing document anyway.

Re: Re: Quick question, K-5 or K-7

2011-12-10 Thread Jens

K-5, no doubt.
I recently sold my K-7, and got the K-5.
A different world. Less noice at high ISO, Higher ISO ability.
Appr. 50.000. Forget the flash: Nice everyday shots at 8000:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/bladt/5571771712/

K-5 can utilize the new GPS-device. No more syncronizing in the computer, the
image files are tagged on the fly - and the K-5 will set the time according to
the GPS sattelite time. No more 21 FPS at low resolution (K-7) though, but much
faster AF and FPS at mormal/high resolution.

I am planning to sell my K20D (which is actually a very beautiful camera -
image quality perhaps better than K-7) and getting a second K-5 for back-up
(because it's easier to swop between them - one for standard zoom (FA* 2.8
28-70mm, the other for the FA* 2.8 80-200mm. Then I will of cource miss the
tethered shooting ability of the K20D -but what the h..., you can't have
everything :-)

K-5 is an excellent camera IMO.

Jens

I bought a 2nd battery, but the K7 is not like the K10.
I had several days of shooting left after it showed 3/4 full.

Or maybe it behaves very conservatively when there are two batteries

Re: K-7, quick question about battery indicator

2009-09-03 Thread Miserere
Hey Guys/Gals,

A heads-up about Li-Ion batteries: In order to get the best
performance out of the battery and the camera, charge them well, and
charge them often. Unlike Ni-cad batteries that suffered from "memory"
issues if you didn't drain them completely before recharging, Li-Ion's
don't, and in fact prefer frequent, shallow charges. The camera will
also perform better when drawing power from a fully charged battery
than an almost drained one.

Maybe somebody would like to compare the performance of the K-7 with a
fresh battery and an old one. Test fps and AF speed.

Li-Ion batteries are usually spec'd for 300-500 charges. These are
*full* charges, meaning if you charge the battery after it's drained
25%, 4 charges will constitute 1 full charge.

Cheers,

When the indicator is down one dit, you have a very nearly dead
battery. My
K-7 will switch batteries about 60 shots after the indicator drops

The battery life seems excellent. With little or no chimping, expect better
than 1500 exposures from one battery. I don't know what the camera's
criteria is for when it switches batteries. I have my camera set to use the
grip battery to depletion and then switch to the body battery.
One thing I noted is that the K-7 doesn't seem to need to be shut off when
the first battery dies to make it switch over. The K10/K20 did. I prefer
that way as I then know when I've depleted the first battery.

Remember, the purpose of the Pentax Gallery isn't to display great
photographs, it's to display great photographs *that will help sell
cameras*. The latter is a subset of the former.

Whenever I get annoyed about one of my shots being rejected I have to
remind myself that it just means the photo won't (in their opinion) help
them sell camera gear. That's the name of the game.

I just updated a bit of incorrect information on a photo of mine that
was part of the Pentax photo gallery and its status changed from
"accepted in gallery" to "back in review"

I've never seen behavior like that using my AF-280T on my *ist D. I'm
guessing you've already tried cleaning the contacts on both the flash
and the camera's hot shoe? Have you tried using it with the off camera
adapters and cable? It sounds to me like there's an intermittent
problem in one of the wires on the flash's foot or the camera's shoe.
Or it's seriously Tango Uniform and only Pentax can resurrect it. :-)

Strange *ist-D flash behavior. A quick question for those still using "old" equipment.

2008-01-07 Thread P. J. Alling
Quick question for those still using "old" equipment. I had to shoot an
event a week ago and my *ist-D started acting strangely. When I mounted
a AF280 flash the camera worked perfectly for the first few shots then
seemed to be trying to PTTL with that flash, which of course the flash
is not capable of doing. I then swapped the flash to the *ist-Ds where
it worked as advertised. I was carrying a light kit so my backup flash
was an AF200. Out of necessity I decided to try that on the *ist-D and
it worked perfectly. Later on I swapped them and the *ist-D once again
misbehaved. Has anyone seen this? If so did the fix involve something
other than sending the camera out for repair? I'm currently planning to
keep the *ist-D as a backup when I get the K10D, (or K20D depending on
which makes the most sense in the next couple of months, funny talking
about a camera that hasn't been officially announced yet). The *ist-D
is getting a bit long in the tooth, but I expect that I'll get more for
the Ds on the used market, and repair of the D might not even be
economically feasible, (once the K20d is announced).

No, no, no, Alaska IS continental... It's not an
island! (Neither is Rhode Island, but that's another
story ;-).)

Continguous, on the other hand, does indeed refer to
the same states as the "lower 48".

I believe this term originated in post-statehood
Alaska as we are "lower" than they are. Today it is
really rather obsolete since Hawaii is in fact just as
"low" as most of the "lower" states (and lower than
many of them), but nonetheless it is still a popular
term.

That's 49 states; Alaska is Continental.

Alaska and Hawaii. "The Lower 48" means the same thing as "Continental
US", or "the contiguous states". There is beyond those 50 states the
District of Columbia (federal capital) and a couple of protectorates
whose people are considered US Citizens. However the US is slowly
becoming part of Mexico by osmosis.

These states were added during my lifetime to the USA.
They were territories and lobbied to become states with full voting rights.

Alaska is still a frontier town with the population in wet coastal areas.

Hi!

Thibouille, there a special "green" button *on top* of D that you have
to press in order to close the aperture and perform metering...

This is with updated firmware (standard in new bodies) isn't it?

I'm still on the 1.0 firmware with an early *istD body, and wondering
about updating.

John, that's correct - you'll have to upgrade the firmware to enable the
green button trick.

I've upgraded, to the 1.11 I think. The one which is one version behind
the very latest...

I am very happy with it. It just works and the whole upgrade process is
totally painless... Just follow the instructions and use fresh(ly

John,

The update does positive things. It's existence was the clincher in my
determination to go with the D. It allows me to use my non-automatic

My question is - since I don't use more than 1 gigabyte CF cards (I'm

Re: Ready to order an Ist-D but a quick question to be sure

2005-05-25 Thread P. J. Alling
Actually pressing the green button sets the correct shutter speed,
basically stop down hyper manual, using
the DOF on the *ist-D gives continuous stop down metering as long as the
DOF is on in manual mode. It
also switches shutter speed to the rear wheel, (thought the front wheel
shutter control is still active).

Jostein wrote:

turn off the camera with. Same design as the MZ-S, btw.

Metering with pre-"A" lenses happens when using the "Green button". It's located
on top of the camera. With "A" and later lenses, the same button is used in
Hyper Program mode to return to the camera-selected combination of aperture and
shutter speed.

The integrated flash is TTL, yes. It gives TTL also with pre-"A" lenses, I
think.

I could be wrong about the integrated flash providing full power with
old lenses. Someone who has time should check the manual. (I have to go
to work.) I know I've used it successfully (more or less) with old

would be gauging exposure correctly every time :-).

Hi Henri,
My 28-70 was one of the ones that died of element seperation,
I liked it a lot. No parts are available.
I use the 35-70/3.5-4.5 in it's place and have been quite
satisfied with it.
Macro ability is pretty good too.

I've had (and sold) both of these lenses. Both of them are fine, but the
28-70 is a tad better. It has fabulous flare resistance, and it is quite
sharp, except at 28 mm f:4.0, at this aperture it is soft at the corners
of the frame, particularly when shooting low contrast scenes.
The 35-70 is also soft at 35 mm 3.5, but in this case all over the
frame. I would say that this lens is slightly better at 50 and 70 mm.
and f:8 or f:11 than the 28-70, but only by a narrow margin.
The bad thing about the FA 28-70 is that a good number of users have
reported that many of them develop a nasty whitish veil between two
elements after some years of use. It seems a case of defective lens cement.

Probably the FA28-70/4, but inspect carefully when buying used because it's
rather
prone to foggy elements and broken plastic parts inside. Not exactly a well

If you mean the multicoated only, I have found PENTAX SMC is slighty better than
HOYA SUPER HMC which is much better than their original HMC. However, since
SUPER
HMC is as expensive as SMC, you might just go for SMC if possible. PENTAX
filters
also have thinner and higher quality rims. Don't know about B+W MRC, but their
rims
are thick.

We've had this discussion before and I know I've mentioned that I
like to
use UV filters for protection. But thanks for the advice anyway. ;)
With this in mind, I would go for the top end B+W filters.
I believe the metal is better in them, and the glass and coatings are
certainly top drawer as well.
