Re: Pentax MX Film Advance Lever

2023-07-03 Thread Steve Cottrell
Hi Colin - thanks for the offer but I beg to differ. The MX is unique. The dust
cap has two small holes for a removal tool (narrow circlip pliers will do) and
unscrews off the lever to reveal the screw beneath. And it is reverse-threaded
(don’t ask me how I know ;-)

Re: Pentax MX batteries

2014-04-10 Thread P.J. Alling
You'll probably see the leds flicker as the camera will think the
batteries are near to exhaustion. I try to use Silver Oxide in the MX
LX and ME cameras I have, that's what they were designed to use, other
chemistries will work, but not optimally. At least with the MX the
battery only powers the meter so the camera won't suddenly cease working
when a low enough voltage is reached.

On 4/10/2014 2:46 PM, Daniele Procida wrote:

Should I expect 675 batteries (nominally 1.45V, though brand new Rayovacs are
reading 1.38V on my multimeter) to power the meter on an MX?

I'm not getting any reading from the meter at all now. At the weekend, the LEDs
for underexposure would show, but none would show for correct or overexposure.
A week or so ago it seemed to be working correctly.

I'm hoping that this was the effect of batteries marginally within the required
voltage rather than a problem with the meter!

Cotty,

I had the chance to test this camera and I wrote a review in my friend's
technology blog. In Spanish I am afraid:
http://www.teknofilo.com/pentax-mx-1/
(contains a full size image gallery)

In short: The camera is very user friendly and I loved the tiltable LCD screen.
The retro look is not as well rounded as Fuji's one and the battery life was
not among the best. At that time I found the street price a bit high compared
to the competitors, but this may have improved.

I will be more than happy to answer any question that you may have on or off
list, as you prefer.

Someone answered me, and I inadvertently tossed the message out, but essentially

With MY poor ol' eyes, I didn't even know there WAS a channel!

So, I got out my flip-down magnifier glasses, and sure enough, I was dissolving

I've let it 'dry' overnight and will clean up and reassemble tomorrow.
Actually, the foam strip seems to have survived my ministrations, in spite of

Your optometrist should have or be able to get you clip-on magnifiers
like I use. They flip up, and clip to the frame around the lenses of

I bought a light seals kit from the seller Derby suggests (interslice).
It comes with clear instructions, and you can download some
camera-specific instructions from his web site.
I am not a handyman at all, but I could replace the light seals and the
foam in the mirror chamber of my two MX bodies with no problems
whatsoever. A kit is enough to change the light seals in at least 4 or 5
bodies, in my experience.

I'm not 100% sure, Keith, as I don't currently own an MX. But the LX
uses a glued in strip of rubber in that channel.

Might be you are trying to dissolve that! In which case I'm sorry.

Pentax learned from the Spotmatic, K1000 days. Of course, that never
stopped them from using the same foam that turned to goo in the mirror
box of all their cameras.

I did find Boz' listing ... Now I'm on a hunt for one. I absolutely
hate split image/microprism focusing aids cluttering up the viewfinder

(My old Nikon FM had a non-user-interchangeable screen with those bits

model E screen for it. Happily, the FM2 and FE2 models supported
interchangeable screens and Nikon made the E2 screen for them. :-)

Hi Godfrey,
LX screens work fine in the MX.
The MX is designed so the user can easily change them too.
I've heard some say there are exposure errors with LX screens
but I've never had a problem.
eekBay has LX screens fairly often, they go for anywhere
from 15-50 dollars though.
Several styles are sans split-image.

BTW: After the MX the K1000 would be rather a dissapointment.
Bigger, heavier, and basically featureless.

Seems to be a lot of K1000 lovers. I never had a K1000; this MX seems
uncluttered to me: I like it. As I said in my other post, I prefer the
LEDs in the viewfinder over the match needle setup as they help me see
the meter reading in the dark, when I need it. In bright light, I can
estimate exposure well enough and rarely look at the meter.

Okey, just an update on what happened.
I got the camera today, checked the shutter, and the mechanical stuff.
Everything is a-okey.
The battery hatch was stuck, as the guy said.
So I opened it up, and the contacts were all green. I cleaned them up,
lifted the bottom contact up a bit since it was pushed down too far.

Fresh batteries in, check for lights...
IT'S ALIVE! :)
So the final amount for a fully functional Pentax MX in very nice
condition was - $60.

HT Hell, i'm gonna give it a shot! :-)

HT /Henri

Henri, if you can't open the hatch, simply remove the whole bottom
housing by the three screws there (if I can remember correctly), and
clean the battery plate offcamera with strong winegar or citric acid I
think. Heating it a little could help too.

When you are at it, there is a MX repair guide at www.robertstech.com
(Mark Robert's site). You can check for corrosion in the wires going
from the battery compartment (there is possibly just one, as the other
pole would be connected trough the chassis), battery acid can corrode
inside wires too. And check the two golden plate contacts at the
bottom of left side of camera (the side with shutter dial), these
close the metering circuit when you press on the shutter release
button. Often, these need just a little adjustment or cleaning to get
a working meter.

better contact.
If it's a wiring or solder issue then a service center

The problem is that the person with the camera lives quite a bit away

I think you have a brave assumption on your theory. No, I do not agree. I
have reconditioned 2 MXs myself few months ago inside out and I can tell
you, it was a lovely designed camera with few flaws. However, it was not
designed or built that tough. Also, water can get in on the winding side of
the camera very easily, and often the cause of rusting in most used MXs
today. Judging from my experience with used MXs, most of them died because
of poor storage or being serviced carelessly, rather than heavy use. Many of
them still have plently of life left if stored or handled properly in the
first place. And EX+ or mint MXs are still plentful on used market.

Regards,

http://www.pbase.com/wlachan
As I have said before, but maybe not recently, MX's were usually bought by
serious photographers. Serious photographers tended to use the heck out of
them. Unlike ME Supers most of which spent the past 20 years in a drawer or
camera bag, MX's tended to spend all those years hanging around someone's
neck.

I myself used a pair, bought new, professionally for 5 years, and then as a
fairly serious amateur for another 5 years. One of them required a repair
once when I dropped it and knocked the mirror out of alignment. Other than
that they were still going strong when I sold them (one of my famous
regrets). BUT! Some one bought them when I gave them up and continued to
use them for some years longer. Eventually they were, I am sure, worn out
beyond sensable repair. Funny thing is folks will say the Nikon F3 was
sturdier, but a lot of folks bought them as tokens and did not use them
much. The ones used very heavily are worn out too.

My point being that I believe a higher percentage of serious users bought
the MX than almost any other camera in history, so there are fewer low
milage old MX's around than there are of most other cameras. Ask Shel, he
went through several before finding good ones. I do believe that a few
years back I told him here on the list just about what I am saying now. I
now have a beat to death ratty looking one that I just love, but it fits
with the ones you had experience with. It is not like a like new one at
all.

The motor drive has been with the body since it was purchased new. This is

The NICAD pack is well used but fully functional. I installed new 300 mAh

Will sell as a kit or split the motor/nicad from the body. Would like to

Re: KX (was: Re: Pentax MX)

2002-07-12 Thread andre

From a 1979 special number of Chasseur d'Images.

Total number of cameras surveyed: about 15,000

ModelAB C D
N*k*n f 9 78 0,7 0,37
pentax kx 10 32 0,7 1,30
N*k*n el26 24 1,8 0,63
leica all 20 129 2,4 1,10
C*n*n f113 42 2,6 0,47
pentax sp5/1000 24 111 2,9 0,53
N*k*n ft42 120 3,0 0,20
C*nt*x rts 17 16 4,2 0,20
N*k*n f213 32 4,4 1,27
K*n*c* tn3 20 50 4,5 0,17

Etc... Almost 100 models or groups of models.

A: Number of cameras returned per 100 cameras.

Note: Older cameras have more chance to have been returned more
frequently (than newer cameras). So this number does not tell us a
lot about toughness. But readers gave the number of months they have
had the camera (column B) and the number of photographs taken with
their camera. A somewhat meaningfull measure of toughness is then
possible (column C).

B: Average age of camera (months).

C: Number of returns (for service) per 100,000 clicks (rounded to .1)
Average for all cameras is 16,6 (not 11 as I reported earlier)

D: Share (%) of all cameras own by readers. If you multiply this %
by approx. 15,000, you get, for example, that 56 Nikon F and 195
Pentax KX have been considered in the survey. Models with less than
25 cameras surveyed are grouped (i.e. all leica, all topcon, all
mamiya etc.)

Global results (average number of returns per 100,000) for a few brands:

N*k*n 7
Pentax9,6
Ol*mp*s 15,8
K*n*c* 15,8
F*j*c* 15,8
AVERAGE 16,6
M*n*lt* 17,5
Pr*kt*c* 28,7

There are many comments in the text (for example, most common types
of repairs are mentionned for many models). Also average cost of
repair and average delay (not interesting as it relates to one
country and back then).

I seriously doubt the survey's methodology. If not
knowing numbers which they wouldn't know (number of total cameras in
use of that particular type compared to defect ones), it's
meaningless.

The methodology itself seems OK. If we believe that these 15000
cameras behaved in a typical way... but it's not a question of
believing... Is 15,000 enough? Is the margin of error too high?

Andre

Or did they use different methodology? Please dig out the
article, so we can be sure :)

2002-07-10 Thread John Coyle

I think you're right Frank - the rubber eye-cup is designed to shade
the viewfinder in bright light, but we spectacle-wearers gain no
benefit, as we can't get our eyes any closer to it without squashing
the lens against the cup, and even then there's still a gap! I find
that simply wearing a cap usually provides enough shade (should always
do that anyway in Queensland's climate!), except when the light is at
just the right angle still to strike the viewfinder, when the hand
comes into play.

IMHO, it's unrealistic to criticise the LED brightness in these
circumstances - if they were bright enough to see in full sunlight,
you'd be blinded by them at night!

There were quite a few positive postings about the KX several months
ago--around February, as I recall.

The KX and K2 are been said to be the only K-series body built to SpotMatic
standards. If it could take the LX/MX screens, it would be my perfect
manual-exposure body.

The shutter release is so light that I sometimes take a shot when I didn't
intend to. But I'm willing to pay that price to get such a light touch.

The Ricoh XR-1 is quite similar in size, feel, specs, and operation, but
adds a split-prism diagonal rengefinder. The XR-2 and 2s add an

There were quite a few positive postings about the KX several months
 ago--around February, as I recall.

The KX and K2 are been said to be the only K-series body built to
SpotMatic

Stories? I am surprised because in a third world country like India,
people are undergoing lasic surgery. Even one of my institute student
underwent lasic surgery just a week ago. He was wearing thick eyeglasses
of power +8 dioptre. Now he is able to see precisely without any
eyeglasses. The only trouble in lasic surgery is that you can not allow
the eye to come in contact with water by any chance for 6 months after the
surgery and this is awful because you can not pour water on your head while
bathing or you can not pour water on your eyes for flushing if some dust
particle enters. In one way, you can say that you have to keep glasses of
0 dioptre for 6 months even after surgery.

And photgraphy? No way. Forget it for 6 months. For a serious
photographer, this is a blow to the chest. However, you can suffer that
blow if you have patience for 6 months.

So, the best option that I think can relieve a bespectacled photographer
who is not interested to change the dioptre of camera eyepiece, is to wear
contact lens.

This is quite obvious in case of any SLR camera. If you point the camera
to a bright seen, obviously the viewfinder will look bright and hence the
light meter reading will suggest for higher shutter speeds for a particular
aperture with respect to a predominantly dark scene whence the viewfinder
will appear dim. The light meter will correspond for low shutter speeds in
the case of dimly lit scenes for a particular aperture.

Funnily I've never had similar problems with the displays on my Nikon F-60
and Olympus E-10. Presume these are backlit LCDs which of course weren't
available around 1980, but still...

Anyway, all MXs are at least 17 years old, and I presume LEDs can fade with
age. On my camera several of them they seem to bleed into the hole of the
adjacent one, so I have to rely on color regardless of position for most
exposures.

Alan,
As we get older, we all will suffer from opaque lenes. We loose contrast
to the point that focusing may be difficult. I went to AF originally because
of this. Since, I have gone back to manual stuff for ease and the comfort of
knowing I am in charge.
My vision, without glasses, is very sharp up to about 1 meter but beyond
that, I need glasses. My correction is -1.75 diopters and I have trouble
seeing the microprism on many of my cameras. As a result, I use the split
image or use a magnifier for critical work.

 Hello to all,

I just took delivery of a Pentax MX kit. It came with
 a SMC M 28mm/f3.5, SMC M 50mm/f2.0, and a Vivitar
 135mm/f3.5 plus a bunch of filters (2 80A, 2
Polarizers, 1 Orange 02 filter, and 2 UV filters). It
also came with 2 2x converters and three close-up
 filters.

Looking over the MX, it is in very good condition, the
shutter fires at all speeds, the self-timer works, the
meter also works. Just have to clean up the outer
parts and it will be all right.

My question is: Where is the DOF preview button on
this camera and how do I activate it?

I'm running a test roll through right now to see if it
has any light leaks. From initial inspection, the
foam seems to be in very good shape.

Overall I'm very happy with my purchase. Now I have
an MX plus an ME Super. I'm back as a fully equipped
member and I'm going to stay!

 Take care all. Happy shooting.

For DOF preview, push the self-timer lever toward the lens.

To use the self timer, cock the shutter, pull the lever around to the bottom, and the
press the button that was revealed when moving the lever. This will show you if the
self timer works.

Personally, I find the MX too small for my (medium-sized male) hands. The Winder MX is
a useful addition to look for, just to improve the feel.

Enjoy it.

I've got three manual Pentax bodies and the MX is my favourite by far. I
love the small size (with the 40mm pancake it's actually smaller than my
Voigtlander Bessa R rangefinder).

Unfortunately it's totally unusable in sunlight. The LEDs are all blacked
out, so I'm left with sunny 16. Find a needle metered K body fares much
better under those conditions. But the meter on my K1000 has a problem
'kicking in' at low light. At night, the MX is supreme.

Hi, Herb,

I certainly have problems reading the led's in bright sunlight. In fact, I
think it's the only criticism I have of my MX (well, the only major one,
anyway). The problem is at its worst when the sun is high in the sky, behind
me. It can be remedied by shading the eyepiece with my hand, which is
probably a good idea anyway, because ambient light entering the eyepiece can
affect the metering in any event.

I wonder if part of the problem is that I wear glasses, and can't get my face
really close to the eyepiece? Do you wear glasses? Anyone else notice a
correlation?

frank

Hi Frank,

I do wear glasses and I think there surely is a correlation

I don't remember seeing the leds of my MX in bright sunlight to

I have found the display of LX is more likely to be disturbed than the MX

I did notice today that the LED's are hard to see in

this nice little compact camera. On the other hand,
the lenses that I got are somewhat pretty well used
especially the 50mm/f2. The focus ring sort of
rotates well past the stop limit. I think it's just
loose. The 135mm/f3.5's hood doesn't hold and also
freely rotates as does the front filter thread. Very
scary. Anyway, thanks for all your responses and
tips. I'm sure I'll enjoy this camera for many, many

You got me curious, so I went back to see my output.

Last year I shot 80 rolls of film. This seemed lower than normal to
me. I went back further and saw that I took 146 the year before. This year
I think I have only gone through about 6. Most of my shooting is when it
gets warmer and of events. Of these only about 20 may be reimbursed to me.

I did find that I took over 4500 shots with my digital. These are
everyday shots that I can quickly show to people for different events and
such. I like the turnaround of the digital. I love the images from my film
camera.
