I think it is a gorgeous camera. This review (on BH) would make me
want to peruse some X100 forum posts before I spent that much,
however.

start of review:
The form factor for this camera is EXACTLY what i want. I waited a
long time to get this camera. After using it for 3 days I had to
return it. This camera does not focus correctly. I do not understand
why this issue is not being discussed.

I am a very experienced photographer - over 35 years. I have NEVER
.. repeat NEVER .. had any camera with this type of unreliable
focus. I read all the info on all the forums to mitigate the problem.
I concluded it was not worth the effort. This camera is not ready for
prime time. At this price you should not have to WORK HARD to get
Autofocus to work properly.

Yes .. it had the latest firmware.

I knew someone would cave in. You were high on my list, Bob.

It seems nice ad sharp. Uniform lighting exposure is excellent. DR
rears it's head in a few shots, but nothing you can't live with. I
really don't know how another camera would have done. I have some DR
issues with my micro43 bodies, but of course that's a somewhat smaller
sensor.

I'm very jealous, BTW.

Hard to judge it properly yet. I think it's going to work well for my
purposes, which is to take pictures at lunch time in the area where I work.
It was a pleasure to use today in the market, but it has its quirks. First
off, the dials are too easy to change by accident, so most of these were
shot at 1/500 on auto aperture, rather than both on auto. That has meant I
had to recover most of the exposures in Lightroom.

The optical viewfinder, which is why I bought this rather than some other
camera, is essentially just a framing device - you can't use if for manual
focusing, so you have to be aware of where the focus point is. In some of
the pictures it's clear that I wasn't thinking of that when I pressed the
 shutter.

But it's early days and I think I'll emjoy using it. It's unobtrusive, easy
to shoot one-handed (you can see your humble servant using it this way in a
reflection in one of the pictures), responsive and quick.

It can't really be compared to a Leica M, despite the reviews, but perhaps
Leica should be thinking about a digital CL along these lines, and about
returning the M10 to the same size as the M3 - the X100 suggests that it can
 be done.

yes, first results not bad. The DR head-rearage may be a result of almost
all the shots being several stops under-exposed. Now that I know I have to
check the dials assiduously to get the exposure right.

There's something in the menu system about HDR, but I can't be bothered will

Great, I'll be interested to hear your impressions as you become more
familiar and comfortable with it.
First results show promise ...

... The optical viewfinder, which is why I bought this rather than some other

That's one of the reasons why it didn't do much for me. Turn on all
the overlays and it's a complicated, fussy view. Turn them off and
it's a nice simple framing device, but the X100's EVF is no great
shakes for manual focusing. I figured if that was going to be the
case, I'd rather have the viewfinder be an option, exchangable with a
better quality EVF when needed for precise eye level work.

I'm happy to report that the GXR EVF is on par with the Olympus Pen
optional and Panasonic Lumix built-in EVFs for quality.

It can't really be compared to a Leica M, despite the reviews, but perhaps
Leica should be thinking about a digital CL along these lines, and about
returning the M10 to the same size as the M3 - the X100 suggests that it can

I agree. For a Leicaphile, the Leica X1 does a better job of maintaing
the simplicity and transparency of a Leica M sans the interchangeable
lens and rangefinder focusing.

I'd love to see Leica go with a CL-D along the lines of the brief I
sent them a half dozen years ago now ... An electronically coupled
optical rangefinder with manual focus prime lenses ...

Stepping back for a moment to reflect:
It's delightful that we have so many possibilities for digital cameras
now, however. Classic RF system cameras (Leica M), classic SLR
derivatives from all the surviving major players and a couple of new
faces, medium format hyper expensive machinery, ultra-compact
small-sensor fun cameras, mirror-less traditional format system
cameras (micro-fourthirds and NEX) and the GXR system notion of a back
with interchangeable coupled lens/sensor and other camera expansion
module options.

I can understand your thinking. I've been using the grid with the horizon
indicator today, for the novelty. HCB had a horrific premonition that
cameras would come equipped with rule-of-thirds grids, so I will switch it
off, but I was surprised by how far from horizontal I naturally frame. I've
no real interest in the EVF, and it doesn't represent the tones and colours
of the scene naturally.

Well, a couple of hours ago I compared the X100 with the M3 and I can report
that they are the same thickness. The M3 is fractionally higher on the left,
and the M3 is longer by about 1.5cm, but what that tells me is that Leica
should be able to return to the M3 dimensions in the M10 when it comes, and
that's what I would like them to do more than anything else.

I bought a Fuji X100 yesterday. After struggling with the onboard software
for a while I decided to read the manual and get it set up to suit the way I
want to use it.

Here are the first pictures, taken around Greenwich earlier today:

Re: X100

2011-05-29 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
Regards the size, that depends somewhat upon compatibility
requirements for the interchangeable M-bayonet lens mount and the
focal plane shutter. The X100 is a leaf shutter camera with a smaller
sensor than an M9, and a lens custom-designed to fit it. It can
certainly be thinner than a camera designed to be compatible with all
M-bayonet lenses and a focal plane shutter. And still have an LCD for
image review and menu operation.

Great, I'll be interested to hear your impressions as you become more
 familiar and comfortable with it.
 First results show promise ...

... The optical viewfinder, which is why I bought this rather than
 some other
camera, is essentially just a framing device - you can't use if for
 manual
focusing, so you have to be aware of where the focus point is. ...

I can understand your thinking. I've been using the grid with the horizon
indicator today, for the novelty. HCB had a horrific premonition that

Congratulations on your new acquisition, Bob. The pictures look

It's a great vid. I think a lot of the fun with this camera seems to
be the way it fits in your hand. As you watch he vid, notice how the
camera flips around in his hand, not like he has a death grip on a
huge DSLR. I don't think Id ever get the camera because 35 equivalent
is not my favorite FOV, but it bodes well for future systems.
