Re: Cool Photoshop feature
I used to use a technique of stepped up resolution in smallish increments of 10% per iteration using bi-cubic sharpening on good well exposed *ist-D images. Then place a layer containing an actual scan of film grain on top to add some false detail. With the right subject, and a good well exposed image, and not pushing it too far, maybe going to something between 9mp and 12mp, they didn't look too bad printed fairly large. I even created a couple of Photoshop actions to do most of the grunt work. On 3/17/2021 5:15 AM, Alan C wrote: Automatically upgrade a *1stD 6Mp to K3 24Mp capabillty. K1 to 144Mp! Well, I'm just back from cycling in France, where it got up to 37C. It was drier over there, which is much nicer than the humidity we have here, and their architecture is designed to deal with it. I don't have aircon at home, but the house is south-facing, so quite cool in the back rooms, and with the windows open some air can move around. Since my post we've had storms, thunder, lightning and hailstones and it's a lot cooler now. Cool photos, but brutalist architecture has got to be the ugliest crime perpetrated by architecture against cities in the 20th Century. Toronto was in the midst of a huge boom during the late sixties through to the end of the seventies, the heyday of brutalism. Grey concrete abounds in this city and it's monstrous, heavy, grey and imposing. I hate it: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robarts_Library But thanks for the link. Possibly the best, certainly the sharpest, photo ever taken of me was a passport photo done as a black-and-white contact print. New Delhi in the 70s, & both photographer and equipment looked as though they might have been around since Victoria was Empress. He had an 8x10 view camera, but I think 6x6 cm negative. Re: Cool article: The magic of contact sheets
And he _can_ do it :-) wish I could. But I did see the Frank exhibit at the Met a couple of years ago where they showed many of his contact sheets in cases in a room withhis choices on the wall. It was terrific. The slides in 20 to a page sleeves to slap on a light-table give the same effect, as they show in this article. I probably mentioned this before, but I've also used BW contact sheets as a way to locate color slides when quickly scanning to gather by subject matter. Seeing the contact sheets of great photographers where they circle only 1 or 2 from a roll of 36 makes one less dispairful when reviewing our own work, too. ann On 9/2/2015 3:17 PM, Mark Roberts wrote: Bob W-PDML wrote: On 2 Sep 2015, at 19:38, Mark Roberts wrote: http://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2015/sep/02/contact-sheets-magnum-photography-magic-chaos I have that book. I was experimenting with different ISOs, shutter speeds, apertures etc, as well as bracketing. I just picked one that seemed to work. Yesterday was also rather busy, especially since because of these photos I had been up until 6am and got a late start on the day. I may well have some better versions elsewhere. with two doublers on the 300, the one that came with it, and an external, Jupiter and the moon barely fit in the frame and by the time I ran two sets of bracketed shot,I'd have to readjust. As to the other one, the quick and dirty, with the moon so terribly overexposed, I think that the ghost image is just due to reflection inside. Quite possibly off the sensor and then the back of the lens. > > > —M. > >\/\/o/\/\ --> http://WorldOfMiserere.com > >http://EnticingTheLight.com >A Quest for Photographic Enlightenment > > > > On 8 September 2012 18:45, Larry Colen wrote: >> I haven't gone through all of my attempts. Regardless of the language barrier the lab staff appear to be incompetent, baby them to get what you want. In other words up-rez the file yourself (though their equipment should be able to handle it), make sure that you set the image resolution as they required and save the file as sRGB. Happy discovering ;-)... A question to you... Recently I bumped into odd kind of problem. I submitted b/w RGB JPGs (30x40 cm at 300 dpi) for print to a supposedly pro lab in Tel Aviv... They complained that it should've been 400 dpi... So they said they'd up-res for me... I agreed somewhat reluctantly. It's important to know what the native resolution of the printer is. Fuji's native resolution is 300dpi, Noritsu is 320. Not sure about other makers machinery. Most of them have pretty good interpoation algorithms built in. Noritsu does a beautiful job of up ressing smallish files. Then the prints came out bluish. Reluctantly they agreed that this was their fault... So I asked them what could I do.. And they told me this: they have two machines (one I know to be Fuji Frontier, the other is unknown to me)... The bigger one is somewhat more stupid... The smaller one (print size up to 25x38 cm) can be forced to proper black and white... So I had to redo my files and they came out smaller yet beautifully toned. A question - am I going to have to live in smaller print size world forever? They do publish some kind of color profile on their web site... Unfortunately all the instructions are in Hebrew and beyond my ability to read... If they are printing to photographic paper, then the only profile they will really understand is sRGB. For stuff I am doing at my lab, I set the pixel count to 320dpi, and then set the print size to just slightly larger than what I want. The printer seems to need about 1.4% waste space, for reasons unbeknownst to me. I then convert the file to 8bit sRGB and save it as a large jpeg for printing. I can either upload it straight from my desktop to my lab, or carry the files in on a CD of camera card for printing. William Robb
Re: Cool things I learned today.
Essential is more like it. Epson's profiles are generally very good for their papers. I use the print driver adjustment only for doing toning on B&W prints, and that pretty occasionally. Godfrey On Feb 3, 2006, at 8:08 PM, William Robb wrote: Colour management is fun. William Robb

Boris, You're in Israel, in Tel Aviv ... I'm sure you can find someone to read and xlate the instructions for you. I know you have friends and associates there. Do you mean to say ~none~ of them can help you? Shel > [Original Message] > From: Boris Liberman > A question - am I going to have to live in smaller print size world > forever? - Original Message - From: "Boris Liberman" Subject: Re: Cool things I learned today. Hi! Colour management is fun. You must understand it then :-) The little switch got thrown today. Care to elaborate, mr Robb? I discovered that the built in profiles that Epson provides work pretty darned well. I discovered that if the printer colour management is on, colour management in Photoshop should be off. I discovered that one can turn colour management off on the printer, load the appropriate paper profile into the printer and lo and behold, the colour charts suddenly start to look the way they should. I discovered that colour management in Photoshop is way easier to attend to than fiddling the printer driver to make the colour right. I suspect I didn't know this before now because I've never had a printer that actually came with a data base of colour profiles, so I was always writing my own. I also made a few 16x24 inch prints using a single istD exposure as the source, and they look really good. My 4800 came with a flaw, the paper tray isn't quite right. Epson is sending another one out to me next week, so I am trying to drain the tanks in this one... William Robb
