Thanks for the link Paul. That was a good read. I did try to click through his

But I saw enough to appreciate his work.

Re: pentax sighting....

2019-09-09 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
Very nice!

You remind me of a Pentax Sighting I had in Summer 2018, while I was visiting
the Greenwich Observatory in London on my "big trip 2018". I can't recall
whether I posted this photo before…

  https://flic.kr/p/2hcZeM4

She was a young Vietnamese woman who happened into the Camera Obscura while I
was in there. We were talking about the observatory things we'd seen. Her
husband was waiting outside as we exited and I used her camera to make a
portrait of the two of them for her. Then I asked if I could snap her picture
for the PDML, and she was gracious enough to let me.

Very sweet and attractive young woman, her husband also a very attractive young
man, both very nice to chat with for the few moments we had. I forget their
names, sadly, and can't find where I wrote them down. I seem to recall they
were traveling on holiday from Sydney, Australia, where they live now. Their
English was pretty good; lucky because my Vietnamese is nonexistent… :-)

I'm fairly sure that in the early films, up to mid Roger Moore, he wears a
Rolex but not the Oyster. My main (indeed only) claim to fame, however, is
that I have never seen a Bond film in its entirety.

Breitlings were what I lusted after, too. But back when I was an impoverished
student I bought a significantly cheaper brand of chronograph-like watch.
It was handy for timing laps at the (motorsports) track. Of course it was
replaced a decade or two later by a push-button electronic stopwatch that
could do far more different functions (including converting lap time to MPH)
and which cost maybe $20.

I still occasionally wear my Omega Speedmaster Professional - the

I figured if it was good enough for NASA it was good enough for me.
Mostly, though, now I wear a Fitbit smart watch because: a) it lets me
monitor my exercise and b) my health insurance company gives me a new

Re: Pentax sighting

2019-06-06 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
I don't understand why people are so enamored of Rolex, especially in the
US. In Switzerland, I noted that the ads and stores were featuring and
promoting other quality Swiss timepieces. I have always lusted after
Breitlings. Back in the 1960s, the Navitimer was THE watch for aviators.
I have a mechanical one from that era in my collection, and it still woks
fine, although I had to replace the crystal and the replacement is not up to
the old standards.
May dive watch is a TAG, currently in for cleaning and rehab.

Sorry. Blind in one eye and can't see out of the other.

I am somewhat familiar with Ian Wright's work from my teen years when I was in a
rock 'n roll band and we all devoured anything we could find about the Beatles &
the rest of the British Invasion, although callow youth that I was, I didn't
learn his name until much later.

All the teenage girls were screaming for the Beatles, so all of us teenage boys
wanted to *BE* the Beatles so the teenage girls would scream for us.

I think the "pirated" image on Pentax Forums is Paul rather than Ringo.

IIRC, all four of them had Pentax cameras during their first American Tour, and
I'm pretty sure they used during the "Ringo's Theme (This Boy)" segment of /Hard
Day's Night/ was a Pentax [although not a functional one].

Fair Use, Perhaps?

It certainly is improper, unethical and illegal to download copyrighted
images to sell, to use for commercial purposes, or to pass off as your
own. Is it, however, improper to do so, with credit to the copyright
owner, for critical or educational purposes, or to introduce someone to the
work of that photographer, or to illustrate a point about photography?

That description sounds familiar - do you know if those images or the composite

When Hoya bought Pentax, it was for the medical imaging division. When they
sold the photographic side to Ricoh, they kept medical imaging, and
apparently the rights to the brand name.
Ricoh picked up the photographic side for something like 125 million USD.

I remember joking at the time that the PDML collectively could probably
have raised the capital to make the purchase, probably Stenquist could have
done it himself by putting a second mortgage on his castle.

Based on the photo, I guess that they said just slap any old thing on
there doesn't matter what. They couldn't even be bothered to take the
aging protective film off the LCD or make sure the rubber eyepiece was
mounted straight.

It isn't a Spotmatic. The black line on the pentaprism identifies it
as K-series, either a KM or a K1000.

The KX has a distinctive little window on the pentaprism, which this
one doesn't, and the K2 has that knurled exposure factor ring around
the lens mount, which this one doesn't seem to have.

A couple of days ago in The Guardian:

Regarding equipment, he's clearly using a Pentax (my money is on the
645z) in the CBS story, but one of the links above references 80MP
which would probably be a PhaseOne back. Another of the links mentions
that he uses a variety of equipment including stuff that does well
at high ISO for his low light work.

Yeah, its been a while since I've seen that chase sequence. All I can
say is wow. They just don't make movies like that at all anymore and
that is a real shame. Everything is just CGI. T2 and Total Recall were
both completely done without any CGI at all except for the T-1000 in
T2. They were two of the last big budget action movies to use
traditional special effects. I'm going to have to watch T2 again, its
been a while, but I completely almost forgot how awesome the
cinematography is in that roller coaster. Its a real shame they
watered down the franchise so much.

Or, you bought the size tripod that fits in your bag, or that you can
carry with you.

I'd never do that as the tripods end purpose has nothing to do with fitting
a bag - IMO.

A while back I found myself with more than one tripod and bit the bullet,
got rid of them all and bought a Gitzo that was not only rated to carry my
600mm, but also weighted less than any of the tripods I got rid of. OBTW its
tall enough for me - I'm 6'4 - that when fully extended I don't have to
stoop it has no center column.

I admit it was an expensive tripod, being Carbon fibre but its been well
worth the cost.

YMMV

I only had one until a few days ago, but carrying it on even short
bushwalks was a pain in the arse (well, back, actually). So I bought
the Manfrotto. It fits on my backpack, is strong enough to support
any camera/lenses I'm ever likely to use and it will be available when
I need a tripod even if I do have to extend the centre column. I'll
still use my main tripod when lugging it over long distances isn't an
issue.

That's really the only way the 390 series can be used comfortably,

Re: Pentax Sighting at the Strobist

2011-09-25 Thread John Sessoms

Yeah, it's an underwear commercial for a French brand, Athena.

http://great-ads.blogspot.com/2011/09/athletes-and-ad-agency-crew-get-naked.html

It's a sight gag. It makes sense if you remember the French think Jerry
Lewis is the greatest comic who ever lived. The naked pole vaulter is
supposed to land in the underwear that's there in place of the cross bar.

He'll never make it. Pendulum effects will throw his timing off every time.

From: Steven Desjardins

I know we are seeing this because of the 6x7, but what was the point
of the video otherwise. Underwear commercIal? My french isn't good
enough to tell.

I'm not sure I entirely believe this. Nobody in France has ever told me they
like Jerry Lewis, yet they're forever asking me why I killed Joan of Arc.

Nevertheless, I have just found a book entitled Why the French love Jerry
Lewis: From Cabaret to Early Cinema
 http://www.amazon.co.uk/Why-French-Love-Jerry-Lewis/dp/0804738947

Apparently Comic performance style drew from a group of nervous disorders
characterized by the psychological automatism emanating from the lower
faculties: nervous reflex, motor impulses, sensation, and instinct.

I'm tempted to buy one of the used copies, but I can't decide whether to
order the one for £1.00 or the one for £280.92.

I think it's rather witty of them to pixelate the pole.

I wasn't disputing the effectiveness, just describing what it is.

It got you to look didn't it?

Probably an attempt at deflection over the shame of it all...
