Bill,
Probably Off Topic, but the Chief stood behind the lines in his white
uniform shirt at rock throwing distance from the protesters, standing
out from the other cops in blue shirts. He got serious 'street cred'
with his officers for doing so and actually helped manage the
situation. The crumpled license plate from his destroyed NYC Police
Cruiser... I have met only one other person who was on site that day,
so I'm impressed.

other police equipment inside, and had been more or less abandoned by
the officers more than a shift prior to being torched.

It was almost like as if the police had set the cars up to be destroyed.
Bob, the police are no longer our friends. They are, at best, allies
with shifting priorities that may include our well being one day, and
something completely different the next day.
You have had at least one major incident in California of cops killing a
defenceless citizen who wasn't fighting back, we've had at least one
incident of the RCMP killing a person who wasn't really doing anything
that made killing him a necessity.
Think of the police the same way you think of Pakistan. They say they
are our friends, but behind the scenes they are working only for
themselves and whatever serves their interests, and it is only happy
coincidence when their needs and our needs coincide.

Re: Today's Peace Rally

2012-05-29 Thread Eric Weir

That was a question, Ann. The answer is obvious to you. Not to me. [I note,
e.g., that Dan's original comment while apparently intended as black humor, was
understood otherwise by many.] I understand that Steve explicitly addressed the
set, "the nests below." Again, taking that into consideration, I don't know
what he was saying. And finally, I was serious about being OK with sarcasm, if
it was sarcasm.

One thing I've liked about this list since finally opting in a year or so ago,
is the affection that this diverse lot of people have for each other. There are
occasional, I would say rare, exceptions. But the overwhelming mood is one of
affection. [Well, one of the moods---along with kindness, helpfulness,
tolerance, etc., etc.]

So if Steven was being sarcastic, I can handle it. Given that you didn't take
him that way, he probably wasn't. But if he was I might wonder if he hadn't
misunderstood something, or if I had been careless in some way, but that would
be all.

Eric

Knowing how over the top both protesters and police can be these days,
wearing tear gas protection at a protest rally is probably as prudent as
wearing a tie-off when working on a roof. When I get into my truck, I

i have seen that garb at many rallies, always a minority, and part of much
more varied exuberant expression; i think few, if any, of them are planning
violence; if they are, they'd be considered infiltrators

i think if one feels sincerely that one is confronting oppressive power, the
"ninja" garb is a symbol that has meaningful rationales; to me (though i don't
wear it) it seems to symbolize the negation of identity, or if you feel
threatened by it, it gets across a message about the perceived threat from the
target of the protest; and as others have noted it can represent group
identity, adding a sociological as well as a political meaning

when you ask them, you get a wide variety of answers; for example:

"Ninjas have been present for centuries, exerting justice and seeking the
truth," said one protester.

Members say the costume has many meanings.

"It's kind of a joke and a symbol of fun and games," said member John Monroe.

i don't think most wear masks or bandanas for anonymity, btw, because i often
see them expose their faces, or fail to hide other clearly identifying marks

Military humor differs greatly from civilian humor.
Even so, with the number of clenched-fist images and other leftist
revolutionary displays going on recently, what used to be the virtue
of opposing those who oppose liberty is now considered "hateful" or
some other such nonsense.

Today we memorialize those who have served. We do not honor those who
disgrace their service for liberty or the liberty that they defended.

In light of the modern revolutionary agenda, "peace" rallies do not
promote peace. They only denigrate current leadership and its military
ventures. We saw it here with W in office the protests were plentiful.
But Obama was not protested despite the fact that he followed the Bush
timeline. That was no accident.

I was in Chicago for the Democratic National Convention of '68.
I think these people wanted to recreate that atmosphere this year.
I praise the Chicago Police Department for being cool despite the taunting and
attempts to provoke them for media coverage.
This was a media event.
The Vietnam War protests were a different thing altogether.

I'm not defending them, their beliefs or their actions, only making
the point that that they have the right to such. Wearing goggles and a
bandanna is not in itself a crime. Even acting like a total obnoxious
idiot is not a crime necessarily. Damaging property would be.

I can think of any number of reasons a person may wish to remain

prejudicial action against me simply because I held a different view

That's hardly the peaceful expression of dissent and disagreement.

Consider the potential ramifications if your employer (for example)
doesn't agree with your political views as you make them known in a
protest. You might be exercising your right to free speech at the
expense of your livelihood.
In the very polarized climate of hate that is pervading your country,
there are many very good reasons for why a dissenter may want to hide
his or her identity, while at the same time registering his or her
disagreement with the policies of the day.

The world isn't above persecuting dissenters.

I *have* to believe that your imagination is a little better than that
and that with a little effort you can come up with multiple reasons
that, particularly in today's environment, one might wish to conceal
one's identity at a protest (many of them non-despicable, if not
out-right reasonable.)

Well I havent seen the Tribune shots or the Sun times but I think what
you are calling the lack of emotion is a GOOD thing - more objectivity
instead of going for the cheap thrill. Nice angles, intersting
subjects, fine exposures.

Send the link to the tribune shots of one can go to see them without

Thanks, Chris! I've been comparing my shots with the shots with the galleries
on the Chicago Tribune and Chicago Sun-Times newspaper web sites and have made
some observations.

1) The Tribune photographers have done a far superior job over the Sun-Times
photographers. The Tribune photos have strong emotion from beginning to end,
excellent up close composition, dramatic moments, and a great variety of
shooting angles.

2) The Sun-Times photos appear to me to be much more amateurish and lack the
powerful emotion necessary for great photojournalism. And, of course, my shots
are even more amateurish.

3) Not marching kept me from getting compelling shots. The rally at the
bandshell was a kind of poser moment for everyone, with folks staging to head
out to the real show--or put another way, heading out to *become* the show.

4) It's been interesting to compare shots of the same subject. For example, the "don't trade
on me" shot I took has saturated blacks--and the rendering is a little odd to my eye, and at
first I thought my camera was doing something funky, but when I saw the newspaper photos of
"don't trade on me", the rendering in those shots was very similar--saturated blacks
etc--so it wasn't just me or my camera.

5) It's also been interesting to see similar people show up in the newspaper shots. I
ran into a student I had a year ago at the peace rally, so I took a photo, and she was
also in one of the Tribune shots. And the Tribune also has a shot of the "Grateful
Great Grandma" taking a rest during the march. I photographed the ole gal at the
Nurses Rally on Friday.

6) Photographically this has been a fantastic experience for me--comparing the
professional shots with my own--on the same subject-- has really revealed the
shortcomings in my work--which is the lack of strong emotion.

Still, it was a great day of shooting, practicing my skills, being part of
history, and despite the shortcomings in my photos, I still have a very nice
remembrance of the day. Today I'm going to make some small prints for the
scrap book, as it were.

Cheers, Christine

2012-05-22 Thread Christine Aguila

For example,
the "don't trade on me" shot I took has saturated blacks--and the rendering is
a little odd to my eye, and at first I thought my camera was doing something
funky, but when I saw the newspaper photos of "don't trade on me", the
rendering in those shots was very similar--saturated blacks etc--so it wasn't
just me or my camera.

5) It's also been interesting to see similar people show up in the newspaper
shots. I ran into a student I had a year ago at the peace rally, so I took a
photo, and she was also in one of the Tribune shots. And the Tribune also has
a shot of the "Grateful Great Grandma" taking a rest during the march. I
photographed the ole gal at the Nurses Rally on Friday.

As far as I know, the part about "the right of the people peaceably to

missed if the alternative was the situation in Syria.

In all seriousness, there are debates about genetic engineering of corn for
pest control, export and import issues, and the use of corn for biofuels,

Thanks, Ann! No, never got caught up in any violence. All the pictures are
from the rally at Petrillo. The wooded area turned into a staging area for
marchers, readying themselves to head down to McCormick place, so it was very
family orientated prior to the actual march.

I was going to march, but in the end decided against it. Even if I had
marched, I think I would have been just fine. It was the Black Block
protesters (which I labeled Ninja protesters in the gallery) that for the most
part antagonized the police, but that was their intent, and if you view the
Chicago Tribune gallery, they got what they intended.

Darrel went with me, and he would have marched if I wanted to, but in the end I
decided to keep us both safe, so we took some pictures, had lunch and a coffee,
then headed home on the EL. Public transportation was a breeze. I expected
heavier crowds, but never saw them.

Rick Wormer's daughter is working as a street medic. Maybe Rick will give a
different account via his daughter.

To be sure, mine is a warm and fuzzy gallery of the event :-). No
photojournalistic heroics on my part for yesterday's event. I was merely

Too many good ones to pick favourites. Wonderful gallery. I really got a
flavour of the event while going through them.

Cheers,

Hi Everyone:

Darrel & I headed down to the Petrillo Band Shell to listen to speakers, and I
have to say, that part was kind of lame. The nurses' rally was so much more
interesting and fun. But today the people watching was great, and everyone was
really, really nice.

The gallery shows Jesse Jackson Sr. giving an interview, a few Canadian
protestors, and a lot of funny signage.

Skirmishes with the police have been reported. The Chicago Tribune has a very
compelling gallery of photos if you're interested.

Darrel and I witnessed no violence, but the truth is we showed up for family
hour, as it were.

Anyway, I'm glad we went to see this historic event. To be sure, I mainly went
as spectator and photographer.

Some excellent photos. Very colorful. I particularly like the girl with the
yellow "Another World is Possible" sign. Lots of other good ones.
