Re: istDS v istDS2

2005-12-14 Thread Paul Sorenson

Shel & Dave -

I've not noticed a major difference between the two in either speed or
function and if there is a difference in battery life with the larger
screen it hasn't been bad enough to slap me in the face (at least at
this point). The larger screen is nice, and is somewhat easier on my 64
year old eyes, though.

When I bought the DS2 I wanted to buy locally and had there been a DS
body only available for a lower price, I would have been very happy to
buy it instead. For a brief time the Auto ISO available via the
function button and continuous AF available in the record menu as well
as the Action program were the major differences for me between the DS
and DS2, but the recent firmware upgrade for the DS puts these in place
so, with the exception of the larger screen the DS pretty much becomes a
DS2.

The *bells and whistles* are nice for quick family photos, but I find
that for *serious* pix like weddings and portraits I revert back to my
old habits of either Av or manual everything.

One question I would have regarding the difference between the two is
whether the larger screen has an impact on battery life, or if any
negative impact created by the larger screen has been offset by
newer-generation electronic components in the DS2.

Re: istDS v istDS2

2005-12-14 Thread Paul Sorenson

Shel,

You're right in your premise that I'm not using high speed cards. For
what I do, the inexpensive (read that cheap ;>0) cards have a sufficient
write speed. With faster cards the buffer will clear a little faster so
if one is shooting lots of continuous action there would be an advantage
there and the DS2 might have it over the DS. The faster write speed
*may* also manifest itself in a few more exposures during the life of
the batteries due to the shorter transfer time from the buffer to the
card, but my suspicion is that in the overall assessment the increase
in shots per battery would be inconsequential. For my shooting style,
there's no real advantage to spending the extra $ for faster cards.

-P

Shel Belinkoff wrote:

Paul,

What speed(s) are the SD cards that you're using?

Godfrey thought that the DS2 could take advantage of cards with speeds of
up to 133X or so, iirc. IAC, if you're using slower cards, you might not
notice any write speed difference.

No, not Stieglitz, Marnie. (Nor Ansel Adams.) Thanks för
guessing, I offer you this for your consolation:

http://www.photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=4049906

I'm starting to think it may be too difficult a quiz for the
list. I was thinking that by some of the subjects, someone by
chance would run into the photographer's name.
He's name is not that well known. Neither is my purpose to
promote him above any body else's favourite photographer. I
simply have enjoyed looking at a number of his photographs as
I happened to run into them.
He was however at one time member of a certain group of
photographers, which included some of the most influential
20th century photographers.
Just like many other American photographers, he was born in Europe.

Perhaps you're about to tell us that they're by Bob Capa, but they sure
don't look like it. Perhaps they are by Cornell.

Or, maybe they're by one of the following: Erich Hartmann, Thomas
Hoepker,

Erich Lessing.

But that would not explain why you can put your name to them.

I don't put my name to them.
Photo Net automatically does that.

I thought this was obvious and I clarified this in previous messages.
I didn't realize anyone would even think much about it.

Re: Way OT: GPS for Mac

2007-12-06 Thread Paul Sorenson
The Garmin Streetpilot series lets you choose fastest route or shortest
route. From there you can you can tell it not to choose certain types
of roads - avoid non-paved, freeways, etc. As soon as you go "off
route" it re-calculates new routing from where you are to your
destination. Most of them talk to you. I have the Garmin C330 which
just says "turn left", "turn right", etc. The more expensive versions
will say "turn right on ... Street" and with some you can subscribe to
traffic reports to warn of congestion ahead.

The storm that dropped the snow on Chicago nailed us in Milwaukee, too.
Started snowing about 9AM Friday and tapered off to flurries by 5PM
leaving us with another 6 inches of snow on the ground. This is what it
looks like out my front door - quite a difference from Boone...

further insights into pricing ranges depending on use, size of
reproduction and volume of publications printed.

One other thing...and you didn't mention the name of the organization so
this may be a no-brainer. But...the IRS is getting funny about which
non-profits are eligible for deductible donations. If it is, it's
listed in IRS Publication 78

Re: DNG converter question

I use DownloaderPro by Breeze Systems. Using the plug-ins provided with
the software here's what it will do...download the originals, whether
pef or jpg, and put them in a primary directory, convert the pef's to
dng's and put them in whatever directory you specify (assuming you have
DNG Converter installed), create copies of all the originals on the card
and put them in a backup directory - you can specify both a primary and
a secondary backup directory. You can try it free for 30 days to see if
it's what you want.

There's also an SDK available that will let you write more plug-ins in C++.

Downloader Pro by Breeze Systems will integrate the GPS track log
information to your EXIF data as it downloads the images. All you need
to do is download the track log from your GPS and tell Downloader Pro
where to find it. The key to accuracy, of course, is to be sure the
camera clock matches the GPS clock. Although the Sony GPS is shown on
the Downloader web page, most any GPS will generate a track log that is
compatible. See this page for a little more information...

http://www.breezesys.com/Downloader/whatsnew2.htm

If you'd like more specific information, let me know off-list and I can
send you the Downloader help file on Geo-tagging.

Re: Cheapass Image Stabilizer

2008-01-30 Thread Paul Sorenson
Also - if you use an eye bolt it's easier to tie the string to it. For
your permanent kit, screw a nut on the bolt just short of the maximum
depth the bolt will go into the tripod socket and glue it in place.
That will reduce the risk of overtightening and damaging something
internally.

Hmmm...Google Sketchup *may* be a tool that will work. It does 3D
modeling and has a free version and a Pro version ($$$). It has a
function called Photo Match that you can use to import a photo then
build additional modeling from it. You will need some reference
measurements for scaling.

Re: OT Jalbum water mark help

2008-02-22 Thread Paul Sorenson
Dave -

What "skin" are you using? I haven't checked out all the other skins,
but if you're using Chameleon do this:

From the JAlbum main page, click on Settings
In the albuum settings window, click on Chameleon
Click the Filters tab
Than click the Watermark sub-tab

You can set your watermark variables from there.

BTW, I'm using JAlbum v7.4.1, but I think it works the same for earlier
versions.

Re: Stupid Flash question

Yes - if you double the ISO, multiply the GN by 1.414 (even 1.5 will get
you pretty close). To double the GN you need to increase the ISO by 4X.

 camera!)
I don't remember having any problems with the MZ-S and 360FGZ
 That's the magic of E-TTL/P-TTL, I suppose
Anyway, I no longer have the 360FGZ and both the Canons are off for
repair and sticking a flash on the G9 is ridiculous - so I'm trying to
get the K10D working with an AF220T
 Here comes the stupid question.
How do I know what settings to use?
My old, old agfatronic used to have a table of aperture vs asa vs
distance. All that's on the back of this flash is "control range
 0.7-5.5m"
It seems mighty powerful at close range. ISO 200 f8 1/180s and a
distance of approx 1.5m and it's way over-exposed

Is it because TTL isn't supported on the K10D so the flash just fires
at full power all the time? Will it just be pure luck if I get a well
 exposed shot with this combination?

Re: Boris - PESO/PAW - Week 06 through 08

2008-03-08 Thread Paul Sorenson
Boris -

Week 7 - I am drawn to the second image more than the first. I like the
starkness and the diagonals in the sand vs the grass. The first seems
too busy.

Week 8 - The Doorway. I like the concept of recording entries to old
buildings. I'd like to move to the left a little more to see what's
inside. Not straight on, but just a little less angle and then rotate
it to the left just a skosh so the verticals are really vertical. I
kind of expect to see an old man with a cane sitting next to the
doorway. ;>]

Excalibur automobiles were built in Milwaukee, WI and the factory later
moved to West Allis, a Milwaukee suburb. The design was by Brooks
Stevens, a quite famous industrial designer who was consulting to
Studebaker automobiles at the time he came up with the concept. It was
patterned after the 1927 Mercedes-Benz and built of Studebaker Avanti
parts. About the time the prototype was completed Studebaker announced
they were going out of business, so Stevens named it the Excalibur and
started manufacturing it himself. A recap of this info and more is here...

Re: Recommendations for a lab to do a 24" x 36" color print from a digital file

2008-03-28 Thread Paul Sorenson
I've had El-Co Color Labs do several 20 x 30's for me and have been
pleased with the results.

http://www.elcocolor.com/poster_special.htm

They have their own proprietary software for up-rezzing that seems to
work well. The only hitch is you have to order a minimum of two prints
- but they don't have to be the same size or the same image. They're
not ink jet so the archival quality would be the same as any other
photographic print.

Prices start at about 10USD for a 20 x 30.

What I'm seeing is not a time zone differential. It may range from 5 or
6 minutes to as much as 30. In any case, I suspect it may be an anomaly
in the way the PDML server bounces the messages out to subscribers and
obviously has nothing to do with your messages being lost in cyberspace.

Re: Epson R800 wireless print server?

2008-04-07 Thread Paul Sorenson
No, I run the R800 directly off my main computer and an Epson 880 as a
network printer off a Linksys wired print server. That way nobody uses
the R800 but me but anyone can use the 880. The only glitch I've
encountered is *sometimes* if you send a job to the print server and
forget to turn the 880 on it will hang up the server. Then you have to
power it down for about 15 seconds to dump the data, then re-send the
print job after you've powered up the server and printer.

I think the plethora of PESOs is a *good* thing. I don't post many, nor

more often about the imagemaker, whether they live in Chicago or Georgia

I've been quite pleased w/the over-the-shoulder-behind-me bounce flash

Re: OT - Hard drive backup softare

2008-04-26 Thread Paul Sorenson
Getting strange indications that my ISP is rejecting some messages -
sorry if this appears twice.

John -

A couple "cheap" suggestions - not exactly full-fledged back-up software
but they work in a pinch.

If you have Nero for CD/DVD burning the suite normally comes w/Nero
BackItUp. It defaults to the burner, but you can redirect it to an
external HDD.

You can also use the Briefcase applet that comes w/Windows. It's
officially a synchronization application but you can use it as a back-up
as well. Just remember if you delete a file on your HDD that's on your
backup drive, when you run Briefcase it will remove that file from the
backup. See this article about Briefcase.

Re: Peso: Hot Rod

2008-04-27 Thread Paul Sorenson
Bill -

You might try this...duplicate the layer and rotate just the top layer.
You have pretty much contiguous color of sky in the upper left and
right corners and pavement in the lower right. When you rotate the top
layer those corners will show through from the bottom layer and you
won't have to crop to eliminate blank areas. Then you can do a minimum
of cloning or cropping in the lower left corner without losing the
in-focus mirror. Flatten the two layers and you're done.

Follow-up...it will look like this...and, per Ann, you won't lose the
sign in the upper left.

I'll remove this w/in 24 hours...sooner if you'd like.
