Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: Custom Clock applet for Touch/Radio/Controller

2009-10-21 Thread erland

There is now a 1.2 version of Custom Clock available with the following
changes:
- Added support for Custom Clock Helper plugin
- Added new Digital Clock style with red text

The big news this time is the optional Custom Clock Helper plugin which
is available as a separate plugin for Squeezebox Server. By installing
this plugin in Squeezebox Server you will be able to edit all clock
styles through the Squeezebox Server web interface. You will also be
able to create your completely own styles.

After you have changed a style with Custom Clock Helper plugin, you
will need to goto Settings/Screen/Custom Clock Settings/Styles on the
Controller/Radio/Touch and select another style and then select the
style you just updated. This will refresh the settings for the Custom
Clock applet and make it use your latest changes.

When you create your own style, make sure to enter a name and select
one or several models which you want the style to be available on.

So let's go and create some new cool clock styles and share your work
here so other users can use your own custom style.

QUESTION TO USERS THAT TRY THE CUSTOM CLOCK HELPER
- Is there any need to keep all the Custom Clock settings menus on the
Touch/Radio/Controller or would it be better to just have a style
selection on the device and make all customizations through Custom Clock
Helper in Squeezebox Server interface ?

There is some more information on the wiki page that describes what
images you need to create to make your own custom clock style.
http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/Custom_Clock_applet#Customization

NOTE!
To take advantage of the new clock style changes, you will need to go
into the Custom Clock Settings/Styles menu select another style and
select the old one again and step left out of the menu.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: Beta version of SvrPowerControl

2009-10-21 Thread Roger66

I'm not excited about SBS 7.4
I have to ask: If sleep monitoring is important to you, and if 7.3.4
isn't missing anything you can't live without, why not go back to 7.3.4,
 for the time being?
So do I. I had the beta of 7.4 installed and was not amused when the
(beta) migration to mySB.com started one night and everything was broken
down with all my SN favorites gone. I went back to 7.3.3 immediately.
But as you know SN user respective users of mySB.com are now *forced* by
logitech to update. And I'm a *daily* mySB.com user. Because I use the
Boom each day as alarm clock and listening the news via mySB.com in the
morning without my PC running. So especially automatic *hibernate to
mySB.com* is important for me.

 Roger: give http://srvrpowerctrl.googlecode.com/...l_20091020.zip a try.
Thank you, I'll try it this night and report to you.

 You weren't crazy.
Never thought so ;).

Anyway, I apologize for my earlier crankiness.
No problem. You are a volunteer doing a good job. Everybody should keep
that in mind - me too. But even volunteers need feedback about issues of
their software, so I just tried to help you a little bit here :D.

I apologize for my rather harsh posting, too.

One reason for using Alien is that occasionally I find programmes that

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] AlienBBC vs BBCiPlayer plugins

2009-10-21 Thread bpa

The BBC create the Web pages from the schedule info and so the assigned
program id are usually known when Web page are available so AlienBBC
knows a program id even before the program is broadcast and so it can
start playing it as soon as the program file has been created.
BBCiPlayer uses the XML feed which is only updated a few times a days (I
feel it is about every 3 hrs).

The issue is not RealAudio vs Flash/AAC etc. but the source of program
id. AlienBBC could use the id to get the Flash/AAC or WMA streams
instead of RealAudio.

AlienBBC is slower to display menus (i.e. uses more CPU and more
network GETs) and from a maintenance point of view needs more effort to
keep up to date as the web pages changes often.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Extension Downloader: which plugins updated... and more

Hi Triode.
I have jut received a Plugind updated, need restart alert on my SBS
web gui home page. As a result I navigated to the plugins/ED page and
restarted via the popup alert. Once restarted I restarted Firefox and
checked that the alert had cleared from the home and plugins page. It
had.

So, assuming that a plugin needed updating then all appeared to work
fine.

I've attached log with (I'm pretty sure) the server.plugin logging
still set to info in case it's of any use in this case.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] AlienBBC vs BBCiPlayer plugins

2009-10-21 Thread knigma

Alien seems to have better Favourite handling of streams, especially
with alarms.

The only other reason I'd like to keep the Alien functionality over
iPlayer these days is that occasionally I encounter other real audio
streams and I believe Alien is the only way to play these on my
SqueezeBoxes. Do shout if I've got this wrong!!

Real Player seems to be in terminal decline so presumably this will
become less of an issue over time.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] AlienBBC vs BBCiPlayer plugins

2009-10-21 Thread bpa

The better Favorite handling will go away when BBC stop RealAudio
streams in March 2010 - the real solution is to fix SBS alarm handling
of streams.

If you want to wake up to live BBC streams - I suggest using the WMA
streams.

It is the intention to create two Plugins - one for RealAudio support
(still used by RAI Italy and RTE Ireland) and another for WMA support
for older players on Linux and OSX. These plugins will therefore just
provide audio format support - no station handling. The user will use
Tune-in and favorites to play the streams / files.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Softsqueeze 3.9 beta for testing

2009-10-21 Thread bpa

Repeated restart now messages usually means the download failed in
some way and the checksum doesn't match. I've seen this before as
Softsqueeze is a large download for a plugin and I think a timeout kicks
in and truncates the file.

You can check if this is happening by enabling in WebUI
Settings/Advanced/Logging server.plugins to INFO and make sure the check
box save logging settings for use at next application restart is
checked and then click apply and then restart SBS.

Then check the server log for message about Softsqueesze after restart

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Softsqueeze 3.9 beta for testing

2009-10-21 Thread bpa

OK - you've confirmed my suspicions.

I think this problem is due to a change in Plugin downloader in 7.4.so
I need to redo the plugin to make it more reliable in future.

In the meantime a possible workaround.

All downloads get cached so a bad download will just be reused each
time you try so when you stop SBS - delete the FileCache directory in
the Cache directory used by SBS (you can find this in
Settings/Information)

The timeout value is controlled by the value in
Setting/Advanced/Network/Radio Station Timeout so if you change this
value to max (60) it might works as long as you don't have a slow
connection and/or no network congestion.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] AlienBBC vs BBCiPlayer plugins

2009-10-21 Thread bpa

Alien seems to have better Favourite handling of streams, especially
 with alarms.

When the BBC retire RealAudio, AlienBBC will not show any menu items as
there will be no RealAudio URLs provided so you will not be able to set
alarm based on Alien entries/Favorites.

Once RealAudio is gone, to play BBC programs as alarm then you will
have to use BBCiPlayer. I have not tested but there are a few threads
about some awkwardness about using BBCiPlayer streams with alarms.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] TitleSwitcher and MusicInfoScreen on squeezeboxserver 7.4

2009-10-21 Thread dip

Michael Herger has now released a new version of MusicInfoScr (4.4.4).
With this new version the errors in server.log are gone. Now the display
for music from last.fm and internet radio stations does no longer switch
(wich is correct since neither COMPOSER nor GROUPING is set) but instead
of the artist name the string TITLESWITCHERARTIST is constantly
displayed.

For example

Top 40-Pop (TITLESWITCHERARTIST)

instead of Top 40-Pop (Bayern 3 97,3)

for internet radio station Bayern 3

or

Thriller (TITLESWITCHERARTIST)

instead of Thriller (Michael Jackson)

for music from Last.fm.

Is that a bug in the TitleSwitcher Plugin?

Michael Herger has just explained that in his new version of
MusicInfoScr the COMPOSER tag is removed when an online stream is

I have the impression that also the substring COMPOSER is removed from
the string TITLESWITCHERARTISTCOMPOSER which would result in
TITLESWITCHERARTIST. Since this string is unknown to TitleSwitcher it
cannot be resolved and is displayed. Does this sound reasonable?

Anyway, I enclose my titleswitcher.prefs and musicinfo.prefs files for

It feels like a bug in MusicInfoSCR then, because it shouldn't remove
COMPOSER when it's part of a bigger word. It's fine to remove it in a
title format like ARTIST - COMPOSER where it's listed as a separate
word, but not in TITLESWITCHERARTISTCOMPOSER where it's part of a
bigger word.

But maybe Michael spots this thread so he can let's know if it's a bug

I'm seeing more and more issues like this one. Where I used to be able
to test to see if a variable was defined, I now have to test to see if
it's empty too. E.g: in 7.3.x, this code returned without trying to
execute $command if a command wasn't defined for the on-wakeup event:

Code:

if (!defined($command)) {
return -1;
}

With 7.4, I'm finding more and more places where I have to change to:

Code:

if (!$command) {
return -1;
}

..which is probably better practice, anyway. It just makes me nervous
because I won't have SC 7.3.x to test with for a while yet and I'm
worried that I'm introducing a raft of bugs for SqueezeCenter.

I assume that this new behavior is because 7.4 is bringing some subtle
change to how perl is executing the code. This is not necessarily a bad
thing. It might force me to be a less sloppy perl programmer.

Exactly same experience here. I'll try again tomorrow. Formatting
looked different for me as well - many lines are tabbed in.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: Beta version of SvrPowerControl

Actually, I'm on the Touch hwbeta, for which I have to thank the SD
Logitech folks. I assume that this is due to the number of SlimDevices
 I've purchased over the years (2 SB1s, 3 SB2s, 6 SB3s, 1 Transporter, 1
Duet, 6 SBCs) rather than anyone at Logitech noticing this plugin or my
 ravings elsewhere on these forums.

Re downloads for SrvrPowerCtrl: hard to say. If you can believe
 http://code.google.com/p/srvrpowerctrl/downloads/list, then some 1,500
folks have downloaded it since the end of June. As far as SBS plugins
go, I have no idea if that is a pathetically small number or not.

That's nice to know. I'm sure it has to do with your involvement as a
community developer.

Shame you do not have download numbers split by releases. However, I
ran a spreadsheet for fun.
- Let say a PC is on 16hr/day without srvPowerControl, 8 hrs off, and
10hrs on/14hrs sleeping with the plugin. Let's imagine the 8 hrs off
draw 0 current, which is totally wrong for most people: off is soft-off,
this mode draws as much as sleep/hibernate.
- If the PC draws 60W running (a conservative figure) and 15W
sleeping, each of us running the plugin on the server are saving 4.5kWh
per month. 18kWh June-to-Sept, 56kWh over a year. A financial gain of
$6.2 over the year, woohoo.
- Now, let say 1.500 downloads means 500 PCs/households using
srvPowerControl: this entire population will save over the year $3.100,
not quite enough for you to make a living --considering over a dozen
players and the house that comes with it :-)

More interestingly, the collective power savings would amount to 9GWh
over 4 months, 27GWh over the year. Those 500 fine people would avoid
the emission of about 13.5 tons of CO2/yr (quite conservative figure of
500g/kWh delivered). This is the equivalent of having planted +1100
trees on the 1st day of the year. 27GWh over a year is also the total,
yearly electricity consumption of 2.5 US households (ahem.)

So, you may go in the woods chop up to 100 trees each month, in case
SBS|perl|users run you amok: you've earned that right.
I will contribute $2 to your bail, in case the judge doesn't understand
it that way :)

I wouldn't think so. More Perlish, maybe. Better? *(!$command)* returns

undef;* -- then your defined() would be crystal clear. *(!$command)* is
the kind of foolishness I really dislike in loosely typed languages.
I agree about loosely typed languages. But in this context, returning
true for $command = undef, $command = 0, $command = , and who knows
what else is exactly what I want. In SC 7.3.x, this worked:

Code:

  $command = $g{prefs}-szOnWakeup_cmd;

  if (!defined($command)) {
return -1;
  }

More often than not, users don't have anything stored in the OnWakeup
pref. So you'd think that this would be undef. But for some reason,
with 7.4, I'm finding that it's turning up defined, but .

Yes, but all this virtue still can't earn me the right to buy a small,
high mileage, AWD, diesel, six-speed manual transmission automobile in
the US. Can you believe that such an vehicle doesn't even exist over
here? You folks have had them for years. Switching to diesel and
eventually to bio-diesel is my best hope for reducing my personal carbon
footprint. Given where I live, AWD is a must. I'm not talking fancy
here. A diesel Subaru would do nicely.

Re downloads not broken out by version: those 1500 downloads are all
for the June 20 version. That's when it started keeping track.

cparker, I'm not sure if you are already aware of this but your plugin
repository can't be reached at the moment.

The server that hostname points to doesn't seem to be running a web
