Re: usb, 3400 and OS9 NOT 8.6

2003-12-19 Thread David Allen
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=31132 The Read Me shows a
list of the extensions/files added. These are included in 9.1 and higher,
but this gives you the list you needed. (The download is only needed to
upgrade 8.6 and 9.0.x and says NOT to download if you have 9.1 or higher)
You should be able to do a custom install of 9.1 to add the USB function
avoiding the work involved in using TomeViewer.

in the bottom slot of my 3400 with OS8.6
But now with Kanga running OS 9.1 , I tried to install the hacked
drivers and the whole powerbook froze right after installation and I
had to remove the extensions to get it to book again. Hence, my
question about usb drivers to run in OS9, as I know 8.6 works.
Therefore, if anyone has usb pcmcia cards running on a 3400 or Kanga
with 9.1, would they please send me a list of the names of the
extension I need and perhaps I can use TomeViewer to extract them
 from the system CD.
 Thanks

Re: Incorrect Finder Settings

Try trashing the Finder preferences and restarting. (Can't empty them from the
trash until after a restart.) They can corrupt and cause all kinds of problems.
If this doesn't work, you may need to reformat, but that is a lot of work with
backups et al.

http://www.mcpb.com/html/pbhdi2.html shows the adapters and cables which attach
via a standard SCSI cable to the other devices. (available in 25 and 50 pin
versionsThe termination at the MB end is handled by the MB, so only the last
device on the chain requires termination. If you want to also allow your 1400

If I can find an HDI-30 to DB25, do I then need a DB25 passthrough

then use the zip's own termination power to do the final termination?

G-3 upgrade it and you get an L2 cache in the bargain. I have two 1400/117s

uses the G3/333 and flies in comparison. The only bottlenecks are the 33.3mhz
bus speed and the limited RAM. The 217 runs comparable to my 7100/G3/217 and the
333 stays with my 7600/G3/300s.

Re: PB 1400 OS 9.1 installation tip

2003-09-23 Thread David Allen
I ran 9.1 on my 1400/117s before upgrading them to G3s. Very slow, but ran. I use 64
meg of real RAM (It ran with 60 Meg also, but prior to upping
my real RAM to at least 60 Meg, it wouldn't install.) 9.1 runs well on a G3 w/64
Megs, but it doesn't leave much for working with any apps. Using
68 Meg of Virtual Memory allows using apps like Photoshop, Office 2001, etc. The
G3/333 is fairly quick even using VM. The G3/217 is a bit slow,
but still usable.

David Allen

I've got the max--64megs of RAM. But I think your problem is that OS 9.1 requires a
minimum of a G3 processor (someone correct me if I'm wrong).

Re: OS 9.1 on a PB 1400?

2003-09-04 Thread David Allen
First, if this is a bit late for the thread, it's because the cable people took 12
days to get the cable at the pole by my house to work. 12 days since we moved into
the new house and 12 days of internet withdrawal I almost went back to dialup.
(That
would be like a junkie going for a glass of beer because he couldn't find and heroin.)

Partitioning is easy and works well for multiple systems. You can start from one to
repair the other, etc. I run 8.1 and 9.1 on various Macs in their own partitions. The
only problem I've seen is using RAMDoubler while swapping between 8.1 and 9.1. When
you go to 8.1, it works fine, but returning to 9.1 , it likes to tell you it wasn't
properly imstalled and needs to be reinstalled before it will work. You need to save
everything from the drive to another drive or computer (or burn it to CD if that option
is available) as partitioning will wipe the entire drive. You can then copy the 8.1
stuff back to its partition and install 9.1 on the other. Be advised that 9.1 needs
lots of RAM. You'll be wanting the max of 64 Meg and VM on. 9.1 runs quite nicely on my
1400, G3/217 and fantastically on my 1400, G3/333.

A little note: Many OS 9.1 apps actually only need the carbonlib extension. (1.6 is
the newest I believe and is a free download from Apple.com) It can be downloaded and
dropped into the extensions folder of OS 8.1 and allows many 9.1 apps to work. You can
also download Nine 11 (Version 1.3) a free extension that allows using many 8.1 apps
with 9.1. (Anyone remember the download URL?) I can attach it to an email if you
can't find it online. Drop it in the 9.1 extensions folder.

Would appreciate advice on whether to install 9.1 on a second partition and leave
8.1 as is. I'm concerned that some of my older applications may not like 9.1, but on
the other hand, I've heard it's not good to have two operating systems on the same

Re: 1400/G3 and Netscape 7 ?

2003-07-12 Thread David Allen
I had 7 running on my 1400/G3/60 Meg +VM for 128 Meg with no problems. I
took it out as 4.75 works much smoother and better for most things. (I
had to download the 7 installer a couple of times before I could get it to
install properly.)

There are a few sites that won't work with 4.x anymore and many older
sites that don't open properly in 7! For some reason 7 (and Mozilla, on
which it is based) have problems with older frames .html code. An example
is my company web site. It opens in any other browser as a split screen,
but in 7 opens with the right side blank and opens the right side frames
as a new page when the links on the left frame are clicked.)

For the sites that don't work with 4.7x I use iCab. ( I use the free 2.9.1
version. Very small memory use and fast site navigation.) Seems to open
anything 7 (or IE) does except email, which is why I still use 4.7x.

anyone know if NS 7 will run with that?

Re: quickcam and powerbooks

2003-07-08 Thread David Allen
I use a color Quickcam with my 1400 for video conferencing often. Works as
well under 9.1 as it did under 8.1 and uses the same software. ( I'm using
version 2.0.2, but I also use the Akua Nine11 extension version 1.3, which
may or may not be helping this app work correctly under 9.1 )

The Quickcams are older technology, but their portability makes them a
great little device. The video doesn't compare to the camcorder that I use
with my main workstation, but try to fit a camcorder in a pouch in a PB
carry case.

The Logitech site doesn't have any FAQ entries, but the old Connectix
2.1.2 drivers on are their ftp site, and the one mac support page
mentions 9.0; but that entry may predate 9.1- or it may be right, and
the software works up to 9.0.

Anyone know? I'd like to throw a quickcam in the bag for my
 1400/9.1, if it would work.

Is there a reason to run 9.1 over 9.0 on G3 1400's? It's been so
 long, I forget.

Nine11 (That's how you need to look for it.) I found it in about 5 seconds

I use it in all of my PCI workstations and PBs. Works great. Just drop the

conflict with anything in any of my very fat systems.

Re: Sick Mac Face OS 9.1/9.2 on PB 1400

2003-07-05 Thread David Allen
9.1 is the best to hope for on a 1400 , (I don't believe the 9.2.x hacks
work on a PB.) but unless you have a G3 upgrade and max out your RAM, it
runs very slowly. 8.1 and 8.6 work well with the OEM CPUs and don't need
max RAM. Any will recognize HFS+ formatting, so your iBook HD should be
recognized. (assuming it fits in the1400 HD bay, which requires thin HDs.)

Re: iMac software restore

I've heard there are some hacks available to make it work on a desktop, but
I've never even heard of anyone hacking one for a PB. The OS contains only
the enabler used by an iMac (#462) and would probably be missing some other
PB specific components as well. The price of OEM full install 8.5 or 8.6
disks on the list and eBay is very low. The 8.6 upgrade is a free download
from Apple, so 8.5 is all that is needed.

Re: Setting up a powerbook 5300ce for dsl?

2003-07-02 Thread David Allen
1. Is AppleTalk ON (in control panels)
2. Does AppleTalk give an ethernet choice? Select if it does. You don't have
the proper card support software if it doesn't.
3. Does TCP/IP (in control panels) give an ethernet choice? Select if it does.
4. Is AppleShare available in your Chooser? Some basic OS installs don't add
all of the parts needed for networking. (Had that problem in a 9.1 install.) I
had to do a custom install and check the remote access box to get everything
needed to network.
5. Is your ethernet card 8.1 friendly or does it require a newer OS? Some need
at least 8.5, others need at least 9.1. Info should be available in the card's
docs or at the Asante site.

Note: My router required that I open the AppleTalk and TCP/IP control panels to
check them. After closing them on each Mac, that Mac was recognized by the
router. If I didn't do that step, they weren't recognized. Must be some sort of
ID ping required by the router. (My Asante FR3004LC router only or all? )

http://www.download.com may have an older Stuffit.

You might also try downloading the free carbon lib 1.6 extension from Apple.
Put it in your extensions folder and restart. (won't hurt anything in your
older OS and allows many newer programs to run on 8.1.) The download is at:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=120047 The difference between
older software and some of the newer versions is the requirement for carbon
support. (My newer stuffit version works on both 9.1 and 8.1. (My OS 8.1 has
carbonlib added.) Coincidence? Same answer on the same day to 2 lists!

I set the router address. Still nothing. The little lights on my asante

Re: Memory for 1400

2003-06-23 Thread David Allen
All of my modules (purchased back quite a while ago from MemoryX @
http://www.memoryx.net/powerbook1400.html ) are made by NewerRam. It has never let
me down on my G3 upgraded 1400s. You might also do some searching through the
http://www.ramseeker.com site, which is a link to current RAM and prices.

Decide first if you will need the single 48 Meg module or can use 2 - 24 Meg
stackable modules. They work equally well, but some add on cards (such as 3rd party
video cards) won't fit with the stacked cards. The 24s are much easier to find and
often 2 - 24s are cheaper than the single 48. (go figure!)

If you don't have the OEM Apple 8 Meg module, (The 1400 came with the basic 8 Meg
on the MB, the 4 Meg OEM Apple module for a base of 12 Meg, or the 8 Meg OEM module
for 16 Meg. The OEM module having its own slot, separate from the third party
expansion RAM slot.) I've only found the 8 Meg modules on the LEM Swap list and
eBay. They are awfully expensive for what you get, so you'd need to decide if an
additional 4 or 8 Meg was worth the investment.

If the pauses are new, your hard drive may need defragging. Norton has SpeedDisk,
which is a defragging program in Norton Utilities. It would require starting from

How much RAM do you have? 8.6 needs much more than 8.1. ( 32 or 48 vs 16?
Anyone remember exactly how much 8.6 likes vs what the docs say it requires?) I
ran 8.6 smoothly on 1400/117s with 64 Meg of RAM (VM off) before upgrading the
117s to G3 CPUs. 9.1 was slow on the 117s, but great with G3 upgrades and at
least 48 Meg of RAM. (I still have to use VM or I have memory problems with 9.1
and 64 Meg of RAM, but the G3s handle 9.1 with VM on fairly well.)

If you are using VM, how much room is available on your hard drive? Too little
room slows VM down quite a bit. The more free space available on a hard drive,
the faster VM seems to work. The space reserved by VM is the minimum it needs,
but it probably has to search the drive for that space when needed. An almost
empty drive accesses easier and faster than a full one. it isn't very
noticeable until you compare it to RAM speeds.

Works, but I had to upgrade to 8.6 to install it. I don't think the 1400
likes that very much, I regularly get a 'pause' effect - Nothing works
(except mouse movement) for maybe 30 seconds, then a flurry of disk activity
and off we go again. Doesn't seem to be a pattern to it, other than it
happened last time I ran 8.6 on it as well. I'll see if I can download some
older drivers for the card, then backdate the OS to 8.1, which worked much
 better.

A pity really, I like the colours of 8.6 better...

Re: PB 3400 Power Inverter problem

2003-06-08 Thread David Allen
Try it with the battery removed from the PB. I'm not sure how the battery
charging system works, but many electronic devices can't be used with the
smaller inverters. I.E. heating coils, some transformers, etc. The
inverter sees these as a short circuit and shuts down to protect itself.
It might even be the transformer in your AC power brick in which case, you
will need the DC adapter to power from the cigarette lighter. I was
planning on picking up a small 250 watt inverter to use with my 1400 in
the car. The DC adapter costs twice as much as the AC inverter. I guess
I'll have to rethink that.

Re: powerbook 1400 stacked memory sizes?

2003-03-26 Thread David Allen
You list six slots on a 1400? What OS are you using? I also only show the
Logic Board RAM and the Expansion RAM with OS 9.1. (16 and 48 respectively for
the 64 Meg Max.) The only way I've found to check RAM module sizes is by
removing and checking the numbers, or removing one of the stacked modules and
seeing what difference there is between the original and the new amounts.

My PCI Macs show all of the slots, (8 in my 7600/8600s) but my 1400s show only
the 2 slots. (Profiler adds the soldered on motherboard 8 megs of memory to the
Apple memory card for the Logicboard memory and the single slot into which you
can put a single or a pair of stacked 3rd party modules for the Expansion
memory.)

David Allen

Hi Wayne -- I just looked at mine again: it lists 6 slots by name, and
indicates the size of the module in each (I tried to copy and paste the
list, but system profiler doesn't seem to allow even *that* much meddling.)
Why yours doesn't do the same I have no idea, but surely somebody else on
the list will be able to tell you.

 Best,
 Victoria

that many horde their parts just in case they find another 1400.

I'm up to 2 now, fully set up except they are cs versions. (I even have
an original Apple Presentation System for each of them.) One day I'll find
some c screens really cheap and the upgrading will be complete. (of
course then I'll need some 1400s with bad screens so that the cs screens
get used and then it will start all over again. But, honestly doc, I'm
not addicted!!?)

Re: HP DeskJet Portable

2003-03-09 Thread David Allen
That explains things. The Mac version allows test/demonstration printing
without any addional parts. Hold the Ready button while pressing the Power
button. When the Ready Light flashes, insert paper and a test page is
printed. PC printers (for the most part) need their own built in fonts, extras
of which would be available on a card. The Mac versions use the Mac's built in
fonts and can print with any font available to the computer. The joys of Mac vs
PC even carries over to peripherals.

Re: 1400 with scsi zip drive

2003-03-08 Thread David Allen
Does your SCSI adapter have a switch ? If so, try it in the other position. One
position is to use external SCSI devices and the other is for connecting a PB to
a desktop Mac so that the PB is recognized as an additional hard drive. (A form
of networking available with some PBs.) On mine, it is called the SCSI Dock
switch and the OFF position is used with external SCSI devices. Be advised
that sometimes the adapter doesn't sit tightly into the PB and needs to be
shimmed up to make proper contact. Put something of proper height under the
adapter so that it fits straight into the slot. Using the HDI 30 wasn't one of
Apple's better ideas. I've also found adapters with bent or broken pins. It
should have 30 pins (6 rows of 5) You might also try a different external device
to make sure the adapter works. (The green light being on doesn't always mean
the adapter is working properly.) An external hard drive works well for testing
if you have one available.

Re: HP DeskJet Portable

2003-03-08 Thread David Allen
The support side of http://hp.com has listings for the manuals and driver
software (version 5.1.1 is the latest and supports OS 8.x through OS 9.x) for
the DeskJet 310 and 320 PC parallel printers and the DeskWriter 310 and 320
Mac Serial printers as well as spec sheets. (The 310 and 320 are pretty much
the same except the 320 prints a little faster.) The words DeskJet 310 (or
320) or DeskWriter 310 (or 320) are usually found to the right of the
control buttons.

Check the side of the printer unit (the part with the control buttons) for the
printer cable port. If you have the round 8 pin port, it is a DeskWriter (Mac)
printer and usable with your 5300 via a Mac printer cable. If it has a port
that looks like a small SCSI connector, it is a DeskJet (PC) printer. Both
versions are color capable printers, but only the deskWriter will work on your
5300. There are parallel to USB converters available, but that would require
adding USB capabilites and the converter. The cost wouldn't be worth the
effort. I'd recommend selling the DeskJet to a PC user and looking for a
DeskWriter for your Mac. (LEM Swap or eBay)

The C3005A designation on the bottom of the unit is the part number for the
sheet feeder/printer base assembly. The printer unit is actually removeable
from the base for an even more compact and lighter printer. With the units
separated, there is a battery cover visible on the bottom of the printer unit.
This can use an optional rechargeable battery that allows up to 100 pages to
be printed without external power. (Great for print anywhere use with a PB)
Without the sheet feeder assembly, the paper must be single loaded though. The
AC power unit recharges the battery without it needing to be removed from the
printer.

I find no reference to any PCMCIA slot. Where is it located on your printer?

Once the software is installed, it works just like any other Chooser selected
printer in a Mac. It has the standard page setup and print commands with some
options available after Print is selected.

Re: 1400c RAM Stacking (was Re: ATA Hard Drives/PCMCIA slot)

2003-02-27 Thread David Allen
32 Meg modules are not stackable. 24s and smaller are. Even though the Max RAM
in that slot is 48, it must be done with either 2-24s or a single 48 module. Why?
I have no idea, but probably is something in the RAM recognition side of the
ROM. GURU shows many combinations of the 4, 8, 16 and 24 Meg modules, but shows
the 32 Meg and 48 Meg modules as being only allowed as single units.)

You can stack the RAM that allows stacking even if you have the 16 Meg Apple
setup. (8 on the MB and 8 in the Apple expansion slot.) I have a 1400 running
that way now while my other uses a single 48 Meg, the 8 on the MB and a 4 Meg in
the Apple slot. The only problem with the stacked RAM is when attempting to use a
3rd party video card. The Apple 8 bit card can be used in the stacked module
1400, but the 16 bit 3rd party card is larger and will not allow the top RAM
module to be installed. (The 16 bit card had to be put in the 1400 with the
single 48 Meg module.)

Both have G3 upgrades,([EMAIL PROTECTED] and [EMAIL PROTECTED]) which don't interfere
with any other
upgrades. I'd love to upgrade the 4 Meg Apple RAM module to an 8, but they are a
terrible buy per Meg and not worth the investment for the tiny gain. RAM Doubler
has a better bang for the buck, allowing triple the RAM under OS 9.1, without
slowing them very much.

2003-02-27 Thread David Allen
I've tried VPC 4/ME on both of my 1400/G3s and found that it wouldn't work. I
originally assumed that it was because RD is a VM, although much quicker and more
efficient than Apple's VM. I since have heard of many people having trouble with
PBs that had Sonnet G3 upgrades refusing to run VPC. Whichever is the cause (or
perhaps a combination of the 2?) I haven't been able to operate VPC 4 on a 1400.
(Perhaps ME is the culprit as it is as memory hungry as 9.1. A different
Windoze/DOS version of VPC 4 might work.) VPC 3/95 and OS 8.1 worked fine with
64 Meg and a G3.

David Allen

Brian wrote:

I've not tried RD on my 1400 (well, ever, really, ); does the MacOS see it
as real RAM or as virtual mem that just happens to work better? Of
course Connectix site is pretty useless for older softwares now.

This might help me with getting VPC 4 to work; on my 1400/G3 with 60 RAM
not 64, there just isn't enough real mem open, even with a minimal
system, for VPC 4's different memory allocation scheme to be happy and let
me run the program. I have plenty of horsepower to run VPC/Win98, just
can't get the VPC 4 to run.

And which version of RD are you using with your 9.1?

 Thanks,

2003-02-27 Thread David Allen
You must have always gotten the good modules and I the bad. I have never been
able to get 32s to stack with 16s. I also have never had a problem with the
16Meg Apple RAM and stacked 3rd party modules that others say they've always
had. There must be some real extremes in the production of the 3rd party RAM
modules, which is very un-Apple. Perhaps the European specs differed from the
US specs? Perhaps those modules lacking the pass through connector are
incapable of being used in a stack at all? I've never seen a 32 Meg with a pass
through connector, but that doesn't mean they don't exist.

David Allen

 Simply not true. I have configured many 1400 with a 16 and a 32.

Some Ram module are not stackable at all, they lack a pass thru connector.

I have heard of problems with certain 16 and 32 not working together,
likewise people not being able to change the 4MB Apple card for an 8MB one.
In the tens of 1400s I've worked on I've never seen these problems but they
have been reported often enough on the list to suggest that some Ram modules
 are problematic.

RD is basically a Virtual Memory program that works better than Apple's. (I'm sure
someone can jump in to explain exactly how it does this.) It has the same
limitations with opening some apps, although others treat it as real RAM (very
slow real RAM!!!)

I'd check with people on the LEM Swap list and eBay. RAM Modules show up
occasionally. They are available from some of the Mac RAM supply houses, but are
very pricey. (I got my 48 from the LEM Swap list and my stackable 24s on eBay.)

David Allen

What, exactly does RD do? I'm stuck at 48mb without VM on, and with the CF
card providing 116 mb additional RAM. but it's too slow (it does prevent
 total hangs or crashes, though).

I am trying to run Runtime Revoulution on my 1400c, and th IDE is OK 'til I
try to pen the docs, then it slows to a snail's pace (basically unworkable)
 after that.

 Will RD help?

Where can I get a 48mb RAM card?

connect via ethernet to my network (standard cat5 RJ45 cable) or phone lines for

easier having just one card and dongle than two.

Right on the money. The command bypasses the startup drive and looks for any
other OS. The joys of internal IDE/external SCSI device detection. I'd try that
route before investing in the labor and cost of a PRAM battery, although many

Re: 1400c battery

2003-02-12 Thread David Allen
You may have a bad battery, it may need to be charged, the PRAM battery
may need to be replaced, or the PRAM or Power Manager may need to be
reset.

Does the 1400 startup on the AC power adapter?

The Help menu should explain how to reset the Power Manager/PRAM.
Replacing the PRAM battery is not for the feint of heart, as it requires
taking almost the entire 1400 apart and working with very delicate wires
and connectors. The PRAM battery is located beside the touch pad in the
bottom case.

Re: Powerbook 1400 hard drive

2003-02-11 Thread David Allen
Any IDE 2.5 drive will fit as long as it is no more than 12.5 mm thick. (There
are lots of 14mm drives floating around, but they don't allow the keyboard to
fit back into the case.) The bracket may not align to mount some drives, but
the space is tight enough that it isn't needed. (I have a 9 Gig, 9mm thick
drive in one of my 1400s that won't allow the bracket's screws to be used, but
it stays in position with no bracket attached.) Remember that some of the older
systems wouldn't recognize a partition larger than 2 Gig. (I don't remember the
exact cut off OS version, but it seems to me it was back in the 7xx range.) A
larger drive can still be used, but it must be partitioned to multiple 2 Gig or
smaller partitions.

Re: 1400 G3 upgrade

2003-02-08 Thread David Allen
From what I've been able to find, it appears that the 3400 has no
practical G3 upgrade path. The (if memory serves) soldered on CPU and the
sharing of the case with the G3/250 PB make it impractical to upgrade the
3400.

The differences between the 3400/G3 seem to be (besides hard/CD drives,
modem, and some no longer needed 3400 parts.) different logic, power
supply, IR boards, fan assembly, bottom case and battery. It would
probably be cheaper to buy a G3 PB than to do the upgrade, but if a G3
with a bad display were found?

Re: Best place to shop for software?

2003-01-19 Thread David Allen
You can probably find an OEM version of 8.6 at the LEM Swap list, through
this same list group or on eBay. Don't get a model specific version (I.E.
the version that shipped with an iBook or iMac, etc.) as they are designed
to install on that specific model only. There are some hacks available
that are supposed to allow their use, but I've never been able to make one
work. The full install version is the best and will cost about the same as
a model specific version most of the time.

Max RAM is 144 Meg as you thought. The hard drive is an ATA (IDE) 2 1/2
wide and 12.5 mm thick or less. I like the thin ones, (9.5mm) better as
they leave more space between the drive and keyboard for cooling.
http://www.otherworldcomputing.com has some new 20 Gig drives for about
$100, 30 Gig for about $120 and 40 Gig for about $140. When you put in the
larger drive, you can partition it to allow separate partitions for each
system and (if you plan on using it for internet access) I like to use a
small separate partition for my internet connection apps. They fragment
often and are much easier to keep in good shape if on their own partition.

What OS are you using? VPC 2.x won't run on the newer ones. (above 8.1 if

to VPC 5/ME when I upgraded and run with only the normal Windoze problems.
Anyone remember where the VPC FAQ pertaining to these was located?

You might try optimizing the hard drive (VPC/Windoze hate fragmentation) and
allocate more real RAM to VPC. (It will run very slowly and I noticed many more
problems when using VM.) I'd recommend upgrading the RAM to its 64 Meg max.

Re: a powerless powerbook

2002-12-22 Thread David Allen
BTI makes an external charger (doesn't power the PB) into which you can place
the removed battery for charging. Mine can do 2 at once, but it is for the
1400, which uses a different battery. I had one years ago that did a single
battery for my old 230 Duo. My present one discharges the battery completely
first to eliminate Memory Set and then charges fully. I don't remember if the
Duo's did the same. I don't have their URL, but maybe someone else can send you
to someplace that stocks them.

A charge as low as yours shows is a good indication of a bad battery. The shelf
life for PB batteries is not very good. They need to be exercised or they self
destruct. I've got several PB battery doorstops (deep sea fishing weights?) for
that very reason. I've found that almost every time you buy a used PB, you need
to buy a new battery. Used usually means that they weren't needed for a while
and weren't exercised.

So - here's the situation. It has a battery, a replacement by BTI. That
thing is profoundly dead, less than a volt. I'm unsure whether it will hold
a charge but I'd be willing to take a chance on trying it it. Now,
according to specs, the 'book needs a 7.5v, 3A Max DC power supply. I tried
it with my universal adapter, which only provides 600mA, and it was still
lifeless. Now that I think of it, I pray that I didn't fry it with the
wrong polarity, being impatient, I tried both. So - several questions.
Should it have booted with only 600mA? Is there a way I can modify my
adapter to produce a higher amperage, without killing myself or destroying
it in the process? Also, does anyone know the correct polarity to use, so I
can attempt to charge the battery; even 600mA should be able to give it some
juice back, right? If that's not a good idea, maybe charging the battery
externally could be an option, too.

Re: a powerless powerbook

You don't need a good battery to run on AC. (Some models need a battery in the
slot, but it can be dead.) I'd recommend waiting until you get the power brick
and check it that way. The 180 is a nice bit of Apple history, but not worth
investing much in as the parts cost could very easily equal the price of a
newer, more usable with newer software, Mac.

Re: Processor Speed Apple Profiler

Believe the software that came with your upgrade.

It is a common problem for Apple Profiler to have odd readouts with
non-standard CPUs. My 1400s , #1-G3/217 @ 217 and # 2-G3/333 @ 333
according to Sonnet, Powerlogix and Newertech software ( I've tested with
all 3 apps. All were within a 1 MHz spread of the 217/333 respectively.) vs
125/190 respectively, according to Profiler. ) This happens with the
Desktop Macs as well as the PBs. My PPC Desktop Macs all show much slower
than their actual G3 upgrade speeds, but the speed difference is huge
compared to what profiler says it should be. I've clocked as high as 16
times faster operation for the same work with a G3/400 vs the 604e/200, in
the same motherboard. It looks like Profiler gets confused if it doesn't
find particular Apple factory type readings.

Re:

2002-12-15 Thread David Allen
The enabler is an extension that recognizes the particular Mac by its model gestalt ID
number and allows the OS to operate with that specific model's ROM. (Among other
things.) The newer generic (OEM) OS CDs have all previous Mac
version enablers included and the installer automatically adds the required one.
(I.E. a model brought out prior to OS 7.1 will have its enabler included in OS 7.1,
but one brought out after 7.1 was released will not, but can be
supported by 7.1 with the addition of the enabler.)

Apple Profiler under OS 9.x on my upgraded 1400 says None for active system enabler,
even though it recognizes my Model Gestalt ID of 310. My Upgraded 8600, is recognized
as Model Gestalt ID of 69, which according to GURU uses
Enabler 702. Apple profiler also says that Active Enabler is None for this model.
That makes me wonder if OS 9.x uses a different way to enable the Mac than earlier
versions. Anyone? Have the Enablers been eliminated for newer
models?

If you are attempting to use a model specific install disk (I.E. using an iMac install
disk on a PB) the CD will not have the required enabler. The Apple.com support area
had all of them for download at one time, but I haven't
looked lately. I'm told there are ways to hack a model specific OS installer to
recognize other models, but I haven't tried them.

Re: renewed book

2002-12-05 Thread David Allen
Just out of curiosity, what did the tech charge for the installation?

I've replaced them in both of my 1400s and I know it's a little work to get at,
(at the front of the lower case by the touch pad) as the plug is very tiny and
the wires wrap under and through metal pieces. It is not a job for the faint of
heart nor the mechanically challenged, as there are lots of parts packed in the
1400 case. Working with tweezers and a lighted magnifier are almost a must. (at
least for my old eyes and fat fingers)

Some people have just replaced the batteries, which requires some soldering,
but the entire plug-in battery module is well worth the extra money. I found a
wire frayed from rubbing on the metal framing on one of the old modules. I'm
not sure what would happen if it were to ground out the battery, but it
couldn't be good.

My Yamaha external 6416 worked fine with Toast 4 on a G3/217 upgraded 1400/OS
9.1. I didn't try any fast speeds, but it worked fine with 2x burns. The
7600/604e-200 that I normally use for burning works at the same speeds, The
slowdown appears to be the hard drive. The CPU can handle much faster speeds. I
tried a burn from a 7200 RPM SCSI 3 HD via a SCSI 3 PCI card in the 7600 and
the burn speeds went up to the 6x max that this burner allows. Disk to Disk was
limited to 1x-2x, but that may be because of the SCSI 1 parts of the external
chain to which the second CD drive was connected. (I had by then made the
burner an internal in the 7600 to take advantage of the SCSI 2 bus.)

Re: Module Carrying Case?

2002-11-09 Thread David Allen
I use pieces of foam rubber cut from a camping ground mat. (I buy the blue
foam camping mattresses sold at Walmart.)

Cut 2 pieces slightly larger than the size of the modules, cut 3 pieces to
act as spacers along the sides and bottom, glue the pieces together with
superglue or epoxy so that you have a pouch into which you can slide the
module. Superglue or epoxy velcro straps to close the opening and travel
without worry. 1 mat is sufficient for a few dozen cases, so you may want
to look around a hardware store to see what else you might find that will
work with less waste of material.

I use the excess for shelf pads, etc., so I don't have any waste. It makes a
great shock absorbing material for anything that needs to be transported. I
lined my computer shelves in an 18 wheeler and carried my old 840 AV, 13
Sony monitor, modem, HP printer and Visioneer Paperport over the road for
years. Tied to an AC inverter that supplied 110 V AC , I had a complete
office with me.

Re: hardware for powerpoint (summary)

2002-10-30 Thread David Allen
One more thing: If you have 2 aftermarket RAM cards stacked, the 16 bit video
cards (non-Apple) will not fit. They require a single RAM card. ( I use a
single 48 Meg card to max out my 1400s to their 64 Meg limit. 8 Meg built in,
8 Meg Apple RAM card in the Apple RAM slot and 48 Meg card in the RAM
expansion slot.) The Apple 8 bit video card allows use of stacked RAM, so a
pair of 24 Meg cards can be used with them.

I also run an Apple Presentation unit, which adapts the Apple VGA video out to
allow connection to regular televisions. (I use a big screen TV in my
classroom instead of a projection unit.) They are available on occasion on
the LEM Swap list as well as eBay.

When I go to the LEM swap list (not a discussion list, hence, making sure

First, I'm asking for a Video-Out Card to fit in a PB1400. (these come
with what Drew calls the funky high density port that requires... the
 following)

Second, I'm asking for a DB15 Connector that plugs into the Video-Out card.

Third, I'm asking for a Mac video-VGA adapter -- which will ensure that
whatever projector I come up against I will be able to connect (either
through the DB15 connector or with the Mac video-VGA adapter attached).

 Have I got it right?

Re: Can't turn VM off ???

2002-10-27 Thread David Allen
I use Ram Doubler 9 with no problems on OS 9.1. It allows triple the installed
RAM, (192 Meg vs the 1400's max of 64 Meg) but runs slow even with a G3/217
upgraded 1400. (Much faster on my partner's G3/333 upgraded 1400) I might note
that it runs at least as fast for the same memory allocation on my PBs as VM.

One thing I've noticed is that RM doesn't steal anywhere near the room on the
hard drive that VM requires. This can become very important when using the
small capacity OEM drive.

The only problem I had with RM 9 was on a desktop PPC using OS 8.1 and OS 9.1.
When installed on both OS drives, it would work with either. When I'd swap to
8.1, RM would work, but when I went back to 9.1, it wouldn't without a
reinstall. It would continue working on the 8.1 drive no matter how many times
the OS was swapped.

Re: Video converter for a PB 1400c

2002-10-06 Thread David Allen

The device is called an Apple Presentation System. My box has the numbers:
602-1236-A and M2895LL/A. They work great, but if you have a non-Apple video
card in your 1400, you can't have 2 RAM modules stacked in the 3rd party memory
slot . A single module is fine and the Apple 4 or 8 Meg module can use its slot.
(The 16 Bit NewerTech cards are bigger than the 8 bit Apple cards.) I got mine
through the LEM Swap list. I can't find it listed in the Apple Store , so it
may not be available new anymore.

Re: PB3400 Ethernet/Modem pinouts?

2002-10-01 Thread David Allen

I have one of the GV 56k, modem/ethernet combo cards ( What used to be called PCMCIA)
that I use in my 1400s. I'd love to find another as they are fantastic. (2-1400s, 1-
card!) Not only does it have the standard modem/ethernet port, but the dongle
can be swapped into another port labeled Cellular. (I haven't tried that feature,
yet!!) Talk about all in one.

The software is standard GV and works equally well on OS 7.x through OS 9.1. The 1400
only allows 64 Meg of RAM, so I can't try OS X, even with a G3 upgrade's extra speed.
It will work through a phone line and network without unplugging the lines,
but because of the TCP/IP and AppleTalk setting requirements, both can't be used at
the same time. (or at least I haven't figured out how to do it)

I'd be interested in a schematic of the card. I'm curious as to how they do so much in
such a tiny package.

You have 2 options for obtaining that functionality:
 1) ClickPad II control panel - software solution emulates a tappable

clicks. In my experience, this software works unreliably and
inconsistently. It works, but not very well.
 2) Get the entire trackpad assembly (including cable!!) from a
PowerBook 190 series (which HAS a tappable trackpad). This works
flawlessly - I'm using it in my 5300ce without any trouble after lots
 of bungling around w/ ClickPad.

I find 9.1 works fine in my 1400s, but they are both upgraded to G3. 9.1 may

Apple Presentaion System ?

2002-09-07 Thread David Allen

I picked up an Apple Presentation System. (complete, new and still in
the plastic wrap) I plan to use it with my PB 1400/G3-217/60Meg RAM, OS
9.1 to link my Newertech Viewpowr 1400/16 video card to a big screen TV
via the video input on a VCR. (VCR on and set correctly. TV set to VCR
default channel, etc.)

Everything appears to work properly, correct cables, green light on the
Focus box, Monitors Control Panel shows 2 monitors, but no signal
shows on the TV.

The docs say tht it needs a VGA output, (the video card does that) , but
it says screen resolution of 640x480. (My PB 1400 only offers 800 x 600,
but when I tested the video card with an external monitor, It allowed me
to set a screen resolution on the external monitor to 640 x 480, but
with video mirroring ON the external monitor matched the 800 x 600 of
the PB's built in resolution.)

Apple's site was of no help. It just mirrored the docs that were
included with the Presentation kit.

Any help will be appreciated.

TIA

Found the problem. I may be pretty good with Macs, but I've got a lot to learn
about VCRs!!! I have no idea what channel L1 is, but while playing with the
VCR's remote, I hit the channel button and at setting L1 there was my mirrored
PB screen in bright colors. (Wish my passive matrix PB screen was half that
bright!)

Thanks to all for the help. Most verified the settings I already had, but
having spent more time than I care to think about playing with Macs where I had
set some simple thing wrong, I appreciate being reminded to double check.

I ran a grayscale and a color QuickCam on an old Duo 230 for years. Worked

Re: 8.1+8.6 = ?

2002-08-25 Thread David Allen

1 of the most commonly needed extensions found in 8.6 and later is carbonlib.
You can download it directly from Apple. The latest version (1.6) works well in
my OS 8.1. (Though I normally run OS 9.1, some of my older programs prefer 8.1,
which I keep on its own partition.) Also QuickTime 4.x (I haven't tried 5.x
and 6.x yet with 8.1 ) will run on 8.1.

 works fine).

Most of the 8.5-6 software seems to require this lib or that lib and I
downloaded the 8.6 ypdate overnight (36 megs!) I wonder if I can extract the
libs I need and get some of these things to work? With the size of the
update, maybe it is actually the entire OS?

I especially want to get APM tuner and several pieces of CD and Audio

1400 for presentations

2002-08-22 Thread David Allen

I'll try this again. The last time someone changed the thread before anyone had a
chance to answer.

I need to tie the video out from a 1400 to a 32 television for presentation
purposes. The TV has only the cable connector for input. (standard antenna/cable
style connector).

I haven't picked up the video board yet, but Iwill be using the 8 bit Apple unit.
(so that I don't have to replace my twin 24 Meg modules with a single 48 Meg
module) I am told that the video board only has the 15 pin monitor connector. I
won't need more than the 8 bit color. I will be dealing with charts and simple
graphics, using the PB and presentation software as a replacement for an overhead
projector.

Is there an adapter to convert to a TV cable? (or a wiring diagram location so
that I can adapt the Mac 15 pin video connector to a standard TV video in cable.

TIA

Re: 1400 CS Screen

2001-08-19 Thread David Allen

It's a peculiarity of the older LCD screens, both active and passive. The
pixel modules have a memory and take longer to fade than a CRT. The fast
refresh rate of newer computers is faster than the fade rate and so gives
ghosts. The higher the screen quality, the less ghosting. Passives ghost
more than active displays. Check some of the PC laptop screens. (even some of
the expensive units) You'll be very happy to get back to the Mac's screen, as
it has much less ghosting than the majority of PC screens. (Especially look at
the mouse trails)

No, it's active. The ghosting is VERY minor and seems to only be with

Re: Battery recharges while in PB165c?

2001-08-16 Thread David Allen

The battery should charge while in the PB, with the PB running or not. The
icon is the charge indicator. It should be solid when the battery is
completely charged. If the battery shows charged, but doesn't work with the
adapter removed, it is one of two things: 1. Bad battery, a very common
problem. The batteries don't last for more than a few years before they
refuse to hold a charge anymore. 2. The charging system in the PB is bad.
It happens, but I'd bet on the bad battery.

Re: pc card modems and lan cards on 5300/190's

I use a GV 56k Modem Ethernet card (Model A959, which is also usable with
PCs) for my on the road needs and have the side benefit of being able to
connect to my network via Ethernet. The 10BaseT networking capabilities
are worth the price of the card as they allow me to transfer data and
programs directly over my network with a simple plug in of a Cat5 cable and
a couple of control panel/chooser settings. I bought mine through eBay for
$40, which might be a bit high, but it was guaranteed not DOA and worked
great after I downloaded the version 3.0.2 upgrade (includes a full
installer) and then upgraded to the latest version. (3.0.6)

It uses a single card slot. (I'm not sure if it is a Type 1 or Type 2 size,
but it doesn't block the second slot, so it's not a type 3.) It has very
low power draw (I noticed no difference in battery life with it running.)
and doesn't need an external power supply. (I'm checking into a cellular
adapter to give me completely self contained internet capabilities when I'm
away from civilization.)

Need software for Global Village 56K Modem/Ethernet PC card

2001-08-12 Thread David Allen

I just picked up a Global Village 56K Modem/Ethernet PC card for my PB
1400's PCMCIA slot, which came without software. Does anyone have the
installer software that they could attach to an email (off list please)
or a source online where I could get a download? I can receive large
files, so that isn't a problem. I checked the GV site and they have the

upgrades, but not the installer software for download.

I've already tried an installation from my GV teleport disk and got a
message that it was thr wrong software for my modem.

The GV store is no longer operating, so I can't buy the disk from them.

GV is the only modem company that that I've seen that doesn't offer
software installer downloads for their products.

I would be willing to pay a reasonable charge for the original disk.

Thanks in Advance

SUMMARY: Need software for Global Village 56K Modem/Ethernet PC card

2001-08-12 Thread David Allen

My thanks to the respondents. Several said to download the latest
update from GV, which was in fact a full install version. Did that with
no success. (Version 3.0.6) I then did some searching and just for
kicks downloaded the previous version. (3.0.2) That's the one. It is a
full install, which can then be updated with the version 3.0.6
download. My little card is happily connecting to my network and the
internet.

Thanks to all for the help

David Allen
