I paid $29 for my new Proxim Orinoco...

Also I think the WaveLAN based cards are compatible with more
versions of the MacOS...

And yup there are a ton of them everywhere.

On Apr 5, 2004, at 6:21 PM, Andrew Kershaw wrote:

Not to disagree that the Skyline cards work well, but I think his
point was that "best bet" may not be exactly correct. Both cards
will probably work fine (as will the MacWireless card). However,
there are considerably more WaveLAN-based cards available and at
pretty low prices (below $40, even)...
My (Proxim) Skyline was $27 plus shipping - new in the shrink-wrapped
box. They can be had for less.

From the Skyline manual under "System Requirements":

"PowerBook that meets Mac OS 7.5.5 requirements or higher (up
to Mac OS 9), including the G3, 2400, 3400, 1400, 5300 and
190 PowerBooks"
I can't see running anything less than version 7.5.5 of the MacOS on
these machines. I think the MacOS compatability of the Skyline and
WaveLAN cards is comparable.

Gerald,

Same drive, just partitioned differently? What did you
use to partion it (Apple's SW or something else)? Do
you have Speed Doubler installed on each (or any)
partition? Any difference in speed with the MacOS 8.5
side?

Any chance of running MacBench or Norton tests to
check if your "feelings" are quantifiable? I guess
this would be a pain as you'd have to go back to a
single partition, install each OS and run the tests,
then re-partition. Sorry I asked ...

I also assume you mean 64MB RAM, and not 60MB.

As a 5300cs owner, this is very interesting. It makes
me reconsider putting in a lager HD. I've been
reluctant to spend any more on it, as I paid too much
for it initially ($280) - although I've already
bought:

32MB RAM ($40?)
an external battery charger ($20)
a Proxim Skyline WiFi card ($30)
a CF/PCMCIA adapter ($13)
and a Panasonic CD ROM drive ($20)

But I wouldn't be adverse to a *good* deal on a 5300c
display. :-) (I'd probably be better off buying a
5300c outright - or even a 3400!)

I know, it's a sickness. :-)

Cliff,

Can you take a moment to list the extensions that are
incompatable? I think it will help my troubleshooting
my GV PlatinumPro - Skyline conflict. Thanks!

You might try using TomeViewer to extract the OT
components out of 9.x and running these under 8.1. I
ran OT 1.3.1 under MacOS 7.6.1 for a while with no
problems (on a Centris 650!), but I don't know if you
can get away with this on later versions of OT or the
MacOS.

Re: Whats the best System for a PowerBook 145b?

2004-03-15 Thread Robert Eye
I ordered a PowerBook 145b off of eBay a few days ago, I did'nt get it
yet, but I'm thinking already. The specs on the machine are: 25Mhz
68030, 8MB RAM, 80MB hard drive, 1.44MB SuperDrive, and the 1 bit
passive matrix screen. It has System 7.1 on it already, but will System
7.5.3/.5 run good on it? I want to have the maximum amount of
compatibility without taking a huge dump on the speed factor. Would an
application like RAM Doubler help in this situation? What about RAM
Charger? Thanks.
IIRC, a 68030 will run everything up to 7.6.1. I ran 7.1 on my IIci
for a while, but went to and settled on 7.6.1, but I had 28MB RAM and
a 230MB HD. 7.6.1 might be a little much on an 8MB Mac. Not sure how
much of a lift you'll get past 7.1 - it ran pretty well on older 0x0
Macs. I don't think 7.5.x will take up much more RAM, although
running OT instead of MacTCP will take more RAM. Since 7.5.3/.5 are
free from Apple for the downloading, it should be pretty easy to try
it out and then go back to 7.1 (just keep the 7.1 System Folder
around by doing a Clean Install).

You can also add items to 7.1 to make it more like 7.5; see here

http://macfaq.org/software/macos.shtml

and scroll to the bottom for more info. You can also add the
following 3rd party apps to improve 7.1's capability:

BeHierarchic
extensions manager
pasteitnotes (like Stickies)
Scrollability
superclock
windowshade
RAM Charger seemed to actually help more than RAM Doubler on the Macs
I've used it on, but YMMV. RAM Charger lets you allocate less RAM
initially and then the application can take more if needed (and if
it's available). RAM Doubler uses a type of VM with your HD to get
the extra "RAM" - with the corresponding hit in speed. You can use
them together - they are not mutually exclusive. Real RAM is always
better, but I don't know if the 145b can take more than 8MB.

Re: IE browser for powerbook 5300 and OS8.1?

2004-03-07 Thread Robert Eye
Hello,
What version of Internet Explorer would be the best web browser to
use on a powerbook 5300 (56 mb) with system 8.1? I already have
Icab, Wannabe and Netscape 4.08, but know that some sites will
require Internet Explorer.
Thanks.
FWIW, I have found on my 5300cs (OS 8.1/40MB RAM) that IE 5.1.7 works
best. Netscape (either Navigator 4.08 or Communicator 4.7x) is just
too slow. iCab is fine for sites that don't use Java - it tends to
slow to a crawl after only a few pages containing Java (not sure if
it's Javascripts or types of scripts or whatever) and I have to do a
force quit. Perhaps it doesn't work well with MRJ for low memory
machines*. IE is slower on these sites, but at least I don't have to
force quit, except after a -lot- of browsing. Too bad, as iCab is
tolerably fast on pages that don't contain these elements, and it can
be set up to take up less display real estate.

It's been a while since I used WannaBe, but for just pulling text off
of sites it seemed to do a pretty good job, and it was very fast.

* I did notice on Apple's notes for MRJ 2.2.5 that 40MB of REAL RAM
is the bare minimum to get it to work, and they recommend at least
64MB. Too bad the PB5300 56MB RAM modules on Ebay are almost more
money than the 5300 is worth.

Re: PC Card in 5300

2004-02-07 Thread Robert Eye
Eject has no effect,on or off or asleep. The manual eject button has
no effect and the paper clip method has no effect.
Is this normal? Do I have a deformed card? It looks straight.
This doesn't conform to the user manual at all.
Is it safe to just leave it in all the time? Since it protrudes
slightly past the end of the case it would seem vulnerable to damage.
I've rarely had a problem with cards not ejecting, either by
drag-to-trash, command-Y, or the eject button. The few times it has
happened, the paper clip has worked.

Your card cage could be damaged. Pulling out the card without using
the button, the drag-to-trash, or the paper clip, can (and may in the
past) cause damage to the cage.

There should be no problem leaving the card in all the time. You'll
drain the battery a little faster, but that's about it.

Re: Internet on PB 170

2004-01-28 Thread Robert Eye
Hello Powerbook users.

I have a PB 170 that I'm trying to connect to the internet. I'm
able to get to get the internet connection using FreePPP. There's
every indication that the computer is hooked up. However, when I
try Internet Explorer 2 or Netscape, I get a note that URL or DNS
can't be found. I used to be able to connect.

Could it be the system software? I used system 7.5.5 downloaded
from Apple's site. Any other thoughts, anyone run into this problem
before?

Phil.
Since you used to be able to web surf, the problem isn't likely in
the hardware. I'll assume here that you are using MacTCP instead of
Open Transport.

Occasionally, on my Mac Plus (the first web machine I had!) and my
Centris 650, my MacTCP DNR file would get corrupted. Make sure you
have all your MacTCP info written down first. Then, delete the MacTCP
DNF file you have in the System Folder - don't worry, when you start
MacTCP again it will generate a new file. Then, open MacTCP and enter
the required info into the various windows of MacTCP and you should
be set to go.

If you are using OT, the same thing applies (yes, there is a MacTCP
DNR file generated by OT as well). You might try deleting the
preferences for MacTCP or OT as well.

Hope this helps ...

Re: Tale of Woe: CF card, VM, & 1400c

2004-01-09 Thread Robert Eye
Well,

As per the instructions on the Low End Mac website, I tried to make a
Compact Flash card work with my Powerbook 1400c. The goal was to take a 256
meg compact flash card, use a PCMCIA compact flash adapter, and format it as
a Mac drive...then map Virtual Memory to it and get a machine that had to
access the hard drive less.
Anyhow, it's not working.

The CF card went into the PCMCIA adapter and was formatted and recognized.
I can drag files to it and from it without a problem. But when I go to the
memory control panel and select it as the destination for the Virtual Memory
swap file and reboot...VM is still hanging around on the hard disk.
Suggestions? Can VM not be mapped away from the startup drive? Is there
something I'm missing?
I just re-tried this on my 5300cs (MacOS 8.1, 40 MB RAM). No problems.

Does this happen in both PCMCIA slots?

You might have a corrupted driver on the card. My CF card wouldn't
boot the 5300cs - I kept getting a Bus Error at boot - although I
could read and write to the card just fine if I inserted the card
after the boot process was finished. I ran Disk Setup and found that
the driver was corrupted. I re-initialized the card, and everything
works now.

Try running Drive Setup and checking the driver. Better yet,
re-initialize the card (even if Disk Setup says it's ok) just to make
sure, and then reboot.

Make sure there's enough room on the card to handle the amount of VM
you want to use (the dragging files back and forth caught my
attention), although I'd guess you're using a blank or nearly-blank
CF disk for this.

FWIW, most disk utilities will work on a CF card just like a HD.

Re-post, or just write back, if you are still having problems.

Regards,

Bob Eye

Re: 5300 ???

2003-12-24 Thread Robert Eye
A few months ago, I *thought* I had this fixed on my 5300cs by
jockeying around the order of PC Card-related extension loading,
but now I still get a Bus Error when starting up with the CF card
installed at boot -- whether or not I am trying to use the CF card
as a boot disk.

Sigh. I hope you have more luck. Please let us know if it works.

Regards,

Bob Eye
Dallas, TX
This is a thread that's a month old or so... Sorry to revive it...

Bob, did you ever find a fix for the bus error problem you were having?

I just picked up a 256MB CF card at CostCo for $50 and popped it
into my 5300 w/ a copy of my OS 8.6 system folder on it. And it
promptly produced a bus error.

I tried re-initializing it with my OS 9 Pismo, put it in the running
5300, and the Finder prompted me to re-initialize, saying it
couldn't recognize the disk format. So... I reinitialized, copied
the 8.6 folder to it, moved it to the Pismo, copied the system
folder to the Pismo HD, used Drive Setup to reinitialize and write
the OS 9 disk driver to the CF card, copied the 8.6 folder back, and
promptly booted my 5300 just fine. Of course, the next step was to
remove the 5300's hard drive, so I don't know if the system when
booted from the HD would complain about the CF card being
unrecognizable or not, but it works fine with the OS 9 pismo...

Peace,
Drew
Drew,

Actually, I *think* I have found a fix for my particular case.

I ran DIsk Setp on the card in an attempt to update the driver. Drive
Setup told me there was a problem with the driver on the CF card.
Hmmm ...

I reformatted the card on the 5300 and copied a system folder (8.1)
onto it. Now I can boot with no problems.

The only thing I found to be different was that I had put a custom
icon in place of the standard drive icon for the CF card. I think
somehow this corrupted the driver on the card.

I also just did a drag-and-drop of the system components needed, as
opposed to installing the system on the card directly. I don't know
if this has any relation to the problem I was having or not.

I don't use the 5300 all that much - it's mostly a test machine to
see if we can benefit from having a laptop or if we should stick with
desktop machines. I'll fire it up while I'm off the next week and see
if it still works.

Regards,

Bob Eye

Re: 5300 & PC cards

2003-12-20 Thread Robert Eye
Is there a difference in the two slots in the 5300? I know with some
cards on other 'Books, you have to use them in the bottom slot
(CapSure, DVD). I have a Proxim Harmony PCMCIA card that won't go
into the bottom slot on a 5300. When I put it in the top slot I get
an error message saying I don't have the proper software to use it
in the top slot. The card works with the IOxperts driver on a
Lombard in 9.1, but we couldn't get it to work in 8.6 on the 5300.
So I took my test 750MB HD out of the Lombard and put it into the
5300, but I still get the same error. And it never goes all the way
into the bottom slot, it seems to hang up about an eighth of an inch
short.

Somewhat related question: While I had the mobo out to try to do
some soldering, I noticed that the floppy connector is the same as
the PC cage for the 500 series.could I possibly use the 500 cage
on the 5300 and get four cards going at the same time? Or put the
floppy into the left bay on the 540c and run with two floppies?

Jeff,

The Proxim Harmony card won't work with the 5300, as Proxim didn't
write a Mac driver for it and the IOxperts driver won't work on a
5300 with any version of the Mac OS. The IOxperts driver requires a
PowerBook using PC Card Manager 3.0 - the 5300 uses 2.0. I think it's
in the ROM; there's noting you can do to upgrade it. The oldest
PowerBooks supported are the 2400/3400 machines.

I don't have any problem inserting PCMCIA cards into either slot in
my 5300cs, although my Farallon/Proxim Skyline wireless card takes
just a touch more force than others. As a general statement, there's
no difference in the slots. Your 5300 may have a mechanical problem.

Re: Good freeware/shareware firewall for OS 9.x?

2003-12-12 Thread Robert Eye
Greetings. I just registered my PowerBook 3400c's MAC Address for
network/internet access at the university. I am used to having the
firewall integrated into the OS (10.3) on my eMac at home, but was
reminded to consider anti-virus and firewall software for the
PowerBook. I am running OS 9.2.2. I have the anti-virus software
installed, but was wondering about firewall software. Is there any
freeware/shareware programs out there, or do I have to go with a
commercial product like Symantec's Personal Firewall? Thanks.

[EMAIL PROTECTED]
Well, using Version Tracker (http://www.versiontracker.com/macos) I found:

Intego NetBarrier (commercial), which has gotten some good reviews in
the Mac press.

IPNetRouter, which can be set up as a firewall (but does a whole lot
more than you probably need).

IPNetSentry (at $40 it might be a good deal).

That's about it. There are likely more clients available, but I am
not aware of them. I look forward to more replies to this thread.

OT Re: Help! Cannot access webpage

2003-12-04 Thread Robert Eye
Hello,

Please help me I cannot access the following webpage : www.irs.gov/

I am using a powerbook 3400c running internet explorer 5.1 and OS 8.6.

For some reason I cannot load the home page of the internal revenue service
on my browser. On my Win 95 machine the page loads so I guess it isnt my
"older" browser version that's the problem.
Any ideas. Thanks in advance.

By the way my iMac running OS 9.2.2 has the same problem.

Eric

Interesting ...

Doesn't work on IE 5.1.7 on my Rev A iMac (MacOS 9.1).

It works fine on the same machine with iCab 2.9.6 (regardless of how
it identifies itself).

Re: PowerBook 5300cs & Apple CD-ROM

2003-12-01 Thread Robert Eye
I just got a refurbed PB 5300cs (Apple refurb--sealed in box w/manuals). It's
a sweet little machine, with one problem. It won't recognize my external
Apple CD-ROM drive. I am trying to upgrade to OS 8.1 from 7.5.2 via CD. I've
checked the connections, the extensions, the boot sequence, the SCSI ID, but
nothing seems to get the PB to recognize the drive. Any ideas? TIA, Heather
(My other PBs include: a 1400c (G3 333), a 190cs, 2 190s, a Duo 230, a 170
and a 100)
Heather,

1. Does the CD ROM drive work on the other PBs you have that can
handle a SCSI CD ROM? And, assuming the CD ROM works with your other
PBs, one can assume that the cable you are using is completely
functional?

2. When you say it does not recogonize the CD ROM, does that mean
that it does not recogonize it either by doing the 4-finger salute*
at start-up to boot from the CD ROM drive (holdng down just the C key
doesn't seem to work on my 5300cs, IIRC), or by booting from the HD
and having the CD ROM display on the desktop?

3. Does the 5300cs recogonize any other attached SCSI device?

It's kind of hard for me to tell from your post as to what you have
tried and what remains unknown.

I would think that if 1 and 2 are "yes", then 3 would likely be "no"
and you have a bad SCSI connection on the 5300cs. If all three are
"yes" (i.e., the CD works on other PBs, the CD ROM drive won't boot
or show up on the 5300cs, and the 5300cs recogonizes other SCSI
devices), beats me. :-) It may be a termination issue, but if the CD
ROM drives works on the other PBs, it should show up on the 5300cs.

Regards,

Bob Eye

*holding down command-option-shift-delete during boot overrides the
selected start-up disk and boots from the next available disk with a
valid System Folder (you probably knew this, but I'm putting it here
for completeness)

P.S. Where did you get a "new" refurb 5300cs?

Booting my 5300cs from a CF card - success!! (was Re: 5300 ???)

2003-11-20 Thread Robert Eye
I had attempted an install of 8.1 after formatting the card as you
would any other Mac HD. Maybe there's a problem with where it writes
the driver on a newly formatted card? Perhaps I have to run DIsk
Doctor and Speed Disk on it right after the install?

I may pull out the 5300cs tonight or tomorrow and try some more
debugging. If I find out anything interesting, I'll post.

Regards,

Bob Eye
Answering my own post ...

I pulled out the 5300cs last night and tried to boot with the CF card
in. Bus Error.

I couldn't get the card out except to paper clip it out. I went ahead
and booted the PB normally, then inserted the card. It was read just
fine.

Next, I opened Drive Setup (version 1.7.3, under MacOS 8.1) and
checked the CF card. It said there was a problem with the driver and
the driver could not be upated but the disk could be formatted. Hmmm
... Now we're getting somewhere ...

I went ahead and (re-)formatted the CF card as a HFS Mac disk, one
partition. I then rebooted the PB withe CF card installed and ... NO
BUS ERROR! WOOHOO!

Next, I did a drag-and-drop transfer of the major system elements,
selected the CF as the boot disk and rebooted .. and ... the PB
booted from the CF card!

For those of you who like numbers (in min:sec):

Time to boot, 775 MB HD: 1:28
Time to boot, 775 MB HD Extensions Disabled: 0:58
Time to boot, 128 MB CF: 1:25
Time to boot, 128 MB CF Extensions Disabled: 0:56
(Number of extensions roughly the same. Boot time measured from
screen light up to complete desktop. YMMV.)

So boot time with the CF card is comparable to booting with the HD.
Newer higher RPM drives (> 2 GB) will no doubt beat the CF card.

There is only one issue I could find in all this .. I changed the CF
card's icon from it's default icon to a custom one (Star Trek TOS
shuttlecraft, if you must know :-) ). It could be, I guess, that this
somehow caused the CF card disk driver to become corrupted. (?) So
it's the plain generic CF card icon for me from now on. Hopefully the
more routine operations with the card won't corrupt the driver.

Anyway, my PB 5300cs now seems to be bootable from a CF card! Now to
get a larger card than the 128 MB I have - it barley holds the
stripped System Folder with no apps. I guess I misjudged the size I
would need. Oh, well, the 128 MB CF can go into the camera ...
perhaps I'll get a microdrive ... yeah, that's it ...

Hope this helps someone else.

Bob Eye

Re: 5300 ???

2003-11-15 Thread Robert Eye
To be bootable, the disk has to have a driver. I guess sometimes a
standard formatting doesn't apply this driver to PC card flash
memory. I dunno why that is...

With that in mind, I'd guess it's a timing issue with the cards.
My setup has to have a driver, or it would not work. Yet it
intermittently fails on the 5300. It's a older Sandisk 64meg CF.
The Pc card adapter is just wires, no logic, but something coule be
noisy or with tht too I suppose and cause problems.

So Bob should trot out and spend more $ :)

Brian
If it were only a question of a little more money, it wouldn't be
that much of a problem. In fact, after reading about using CF cards
via PCMCIA slot, I bought a 128MB SanDisk card and SanDisk PCMCIA-CF
reader for this puropse - they're about a year old now. So far, all
for naught w.r.t booting and working in the PB at start-up.

Glad to see this topic come up again.

Bob Eye

Re: 5300 ???

2003-11-14 Thread Robert Eye
I was toying with an idea of installing 8.1 on a CF ram and using
that to boot my 5300. That way I could use the HD for data storage
only. How large of a card would I need to get and how would I go
about doing the software to the card.

I think this would speed up my system because I would have fewer
disk I/O and not be limited in the OS by my disk speed and transfer
rate.

Will this work?

Thanks,

John
You'll need at least a 64 MB CF card to do this, IIRC, but a 128 MB
would be better - especially if you want to use the card for VM plus
as a boot disk. A 32 MB card might hold a minimum install.

A few months ago, I *thought* I had this fixed on my 5300cs by
jockeying around the order of PC Card-related extension loading, but
now I still get a Bus Error when starting up with the CF card
installed at boot -- whether or not I am trying to use the CF card as
a boot disk.

Sigh. I hope you have more luck. Please let us know if it works.

Ammonia? (was Re: Painting a Powerbook)

I have found that alcohol cleans but not enough. Ammonia on the other
hand cleans very efficiently. I started with alcohol with my painting hacks
and have gotten many fisheyes in the paint (dirt or oil still on the
plastic). Once I switched to the Ammonia I haven't had any problems with
fisheyes, adherence or chip resistance.

There's ammonia, and then there's ammonia .. are we talking about
NH4OH (ammonia in water - can probably only get at a chemical
supplier), or are we talking about store-bought "ammonia," which is
ammonia plus other detergents? (often called sudsy ammonia)

Re: Powerbook 1400 PC Card Bootup Freeze

2003-09-10 Thread Robert Eye
Seems whenever I try to use either my GV Powerport Platinum Pro or Dayna
Communicard Ethernet PC cards, my 1400 freezes after the first extension
loads up. Strangely enough, if I remove the card before booting, it
boots fine. Why would the card being installed cause the extensions to
lock up?
Mark Attew
I had a similar issue with my PCMCIA CF reader plus CF card installed
at boot on my 5300cs, except I would get a Bus Error bomb and have to
restart.

You might try putting a space before the name of the PC Card
extension, so that it loads before other extensions. That's what I
had to do to get my 5300cs to boot with the CF card installed. You
may also need to do that with the extensions for the cards you
mentioned.

Please post back as to whether or not this works - it adds to the
body of knowledge for these older machines.

I'd like to know, for anyone out there who would be so kind as to

How about VM on/off? Do you care?

8.6 w/ VM on will be fine in 40MB of RAM. But the 5300 isn't

My PB5300cs now boots with CF card installed!

2003-09-04 Thread Robert Eye
Back when we were having the discussion about using CF cards as
VM/boot "disks" in the PCMCIA slot, I reported that I would get a Bus
Error when I tried to boot with a CF card installed.

I could add it in later for browser cache, but it would always hang
at boot if the card was installed.

I tried again last night and got the same Bus Error.

Then I thought "when does the PC Card extension load?" Pretty late in
the game, it turns out. So ... I went into the Extensions folder,
placed a before the name "PC Card" on the extension and
rebooted ...

Woo hoo! It now boots with the card installed.

I know this is a very well known troubleshooting technique for
extension problems, but it took me a while to remember it. I just
thought I'd pass it along in case anyone else was having trouble (and
to share my good fortune).

Time to go put a system folder and Norton on the CF card as an
emergency disk and see if it works that way (which was my main
motivation for trying this in the first place).

How much RAM does 8.6 take on *your* PB5300?

Re: Good deal on NEW Skyline WiFi card

But I would like to know of a base station that works with a iMac that is not
an Airport, if someone would like to recommend some. We have 802.11b only.
Dan in AZ
I am running a Belkin 802.11b wireless router/base station
(F5D6231-4) with my Rev. A iMac (connected via Ethernet) and PB5300cs
(using the Skyline card I originally posted about), all connected to
my SpeedStream DSL modem. Micro Center has it available through
August 31(in store and on-line order) for $20 after $20 instant
rebate and $40 mail-in rebate.

http://microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0151877

It's completely configurable through a browser, and it comes with Mac
instructions (although it has no Mac Easy Setup software - not much
of a limitation). And, according to the manual, it supports AppleTalk
(which I understand several products out there do not).

Re: Good deal on NEW Skyline WiFi card

2003-08-30 Thread Robert Eye
Sorry, Dan, but there **is most definitely** an Orinoco Silver CardBus card:

http://www.proxim.com/products/all/orinoco/client/abgcard/index.html

and the spec sheet, here:

http://www.proxim.com/learn/library/datasheets/11abgcombocard.pdf

It's a combo 802.11a/b/g card for PCs. And since it is CardBus it
won't work in a 5300.

Besides, I was responding to the original poster **who said he had a
32-bit card** - it wasn't my assumption.

Sorry it didn't work out with the Harmony card.

Robert Eye <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:

PB5300.
There is no 32-bit Orinoco Silver, AFAIK they're all 16 bit. In any case,
if the card can physically be fully inserted into a 5300 it can't be
carbus anyhow, the 16 bit cage won't allow an unmodified cardbus card
entry.
Happily I see 'Dan in AZ' got his Proxim card working, but he could try
this driver with his Silver card:

*Not particularly related to the orig topic*
I've not been able to get Proxim Harmony cards to work with 10.2.x and
the open source driver. So much for my $15 'bargain' WiFI cards. :-\
Anybody know if the Harmony PC cards are Hermes or Prism chipset cards?
I've not been able to pin down that little detail. One thing for sure
though is they only fit cardbus cages, though I've no idea if they really
are cardbus or not.

Re: Good deal on NEW Skyline WiFi card (Re: wifi cards in PBs 500and5300)

2003-08-28 Thread Robert Eye
Hmmm the card and software work great on my 5300cs under 8.1,
using their installer cd. I drained 3 battery packs playing with the
wireless-equipped PB last night. :-) Alas, I can't get more than
about 1 hr. 20 min. from a fully changed 5300 NiMH battery (any
suggestions?).

Your possible options are:

1. Bad PCMCIA socket. Did you try both top and bottom slots? Do other
cards work? If other cards work and you tried both slots, odds are
the PB is ok.

2. Uninstall their sw, make sure there are no other problems with
your system (run Norton, DIsk Warrior, TechTool Pro, etc.), reboot,
zap PRAM(!), and reinstall their software.

**Make sure you follow their instructions: install software, reboot,
insert card. Don't insert the card first and then try to install the
software.**

3. Bad Skyline card. Yes, some bad parts do get through even the best
of companies. Check Micro-Xpress' web site (I assume that's where
you got it - that's the link I posted for buying the card) and see
what their procedure is for returning an order due to defects. Did
you/can you try the card in another functional PB?

Let us know if any of the above work out. Nice to know their tech
support is at least somewhat helpful.

As to the Orinoco Silver 32-bit card, the PB5300 cannot talk to it -
the PB is looking for 16 bit cards only, and CardBus cards are
32-bit. You need a 16-bit Orinoco Silver or Gold card to use in a
PB5300.

Did you try using this card beofre trying the Skyline card? You *may*
have damaged the PB's PCMCIA slot(s) in doing so (but I won't swear
to it).

After reading the following messages, I took the plunge. I received
the Skyline 802.11b that was suggested yesterday. I have spent
several hours with it and have not been able to get past installing
the software from their
cd. I put the card into my 5300 with 8.6 . The "Farallon Wireless"
icon came on the desktop when I installed the card, as it is
supposed to. When I click on that, I get a message that the card
cannot be found. I can not get to the control panel for the card
("Wireless" control panel) even by trying to open it thru control
panels under the apple menu. I have been on twice with Proxim's
tech department and the tech agent said "You will find a good driver
on our site." I downloaded and installed the recommended driver from
their site, and still the same. The card cannot be found even when
the icon appears on the desktop. What am I doing wrong or what
extension is conflicting? I am at my wits end on this. Is there a
good driver for this? Help please!

Also, and alternatively, I tried an ORiNOCO Silver card and because
it is for a 32 bit
cardbus, it seems not to work in a 5300. Is there a proper driver
for that card?

Re: PB5300c Floppy Drive

2003-08-24 Thread Robert Eye
Since we're talking about a PB5300c here, I seriously doubt he's
using a USB floppy - as the PB5300c can't do USB.

Cleaning the drive is a good first step. Get a floppy cleaning kit
(most office supply mega-stores have them, and I've still seen them
at CompUSA). I'm sure you can get one in a comparable place in
Australia.

TechTool Lite (the free one) has a floppy cleaning routine that does
a good job. You can get it from

http://www.micromat.com/downloads/downloads.html#Anchor-TechTool-35882

Older versions are still floating around on the Internet if you want
a smaller download.

If this doesn't work, hit ebay and find one there. I'm sure you can
do a tear down and try to rebuild it, but I haven't seen any
instructions on doing so.

The 5300 floppy drive is the same as the 3400 floppy drive, FWIW, and IIRC.

Re: back to earlier mac os, how to? (long) 5300

2003-08-24 Thread Robert Eye
Han,

The 2400 won't boot of something as old as MacOS 7.5. The
everymac.com states the baseline OS version is 7.6.

Nor will the 7.5 Network disk boot a 5300. You need at least MacOS
7.5.2 to run a 5300.

How much RAM does it have now? If it has enough to boot 8.6 it should
have enough so you can do a serial transfer between the 6500's
printer or modem port and the 5300's (single) printer/modem port.
It's not quick but it should work (although I've never done it, it's
the quickest, and probably slowest, way to network 2 Macs together).

In fact, here's a site that describes it pretty well:

http://www.atpm.com/network/setup/localtalk_serial.html

You should have all the SW already installed on the Macs - you'll
just need a serial cable for Macs (I don't think PC serial cables
will work - the pin count is wrong as I recall, but I don't remember
which is 9-pin and which is 8).

Just connect the 6500 to the 5300, and copy the 19 disk images from
the 6500 to the 5300. It will take a LONG while to do this, but it
will work. You should be able to open the 1st disk image and install
7.5.3 from there.

You might (I don't recall - I hope someone else chimes in verifying
or correcting my instructions) have to unbless the current System
folder first, by moving the Finder out of the System Folder. Then,
install 7.5.3 and allow the Mac to reboot. It should reboot into
7.5.3.

I am assuming in all this that the 5300 does not have ethernet
ability, either through a PC Card or through one of the Focus
video/ethernet built-in cards. If you have ethernet on both machines,
use it instead. It is faster. The site I linked to above also has
good info on ethernet connecting Macs.

Regards,

Bob Eye
Dallas, TX
We are fixing up the ol 5300 to lend to a friend this
fall who can't afford to purchase a book for herself
yet. The husband upgraded it to os 8.6, but it really
doesn't have enough ram to support 8.6, and I can't
find an affordable ram upgrade. I used to run 7.5.5
on it without a problem, so I thought we could just
return it to 7.5.5.

Clark,

Yes, it's the same thickness as the card itself.

I just tried inserting it into my 5300cs' bottom slot, and a GV
modem/e'net card in the top. Fits like a glove. If the bottom of the
USB card is flat w.r.t. the rest of the card ,you should be fine.

Regards,

To anyone who has this. Is the antenna on this card skinny, ie just
as thin as the card itself. I'm looking for such a card as I want
to be able to insert it in the lower PC Card slot and put a USB card
w/integral connectors in the top slot. The Orinoco I have sticks up
and won't permit such a card above it.

Re: wifi cards in PBs 500 and 5300

2003-08-21 Thread Robert Eye
Speaking of wifi cards, anyone have or use one of these Proxim Harmony
series cards?:

$15 for an 802.11b WiFi card looks to be a pretty-darn-good deal, but I
can't find any trace of MacOS support on Proxim's website. Supposedly
these Harmony cards _are_ supported by the open source driver under X
 so could be a
good choice for a Wallstreet or Lombard under X.x.
I couldn't resist ordering a couple just to find out, so when they arrive
I'll report their MacOS/X-compatibility. I just remembered the topic,
obviously if there are no drivers for classic MacOS (ie: for PBs 500 and
5300) then all this is rather OT.
Dan K
Dan

Here's a link to all the Harmony products' software:

http://www.proxim.com/support/all/harmony/software/index.html

No Mac stuff there. A couple of their press releases say that the
Harmony line is for "enterprise" users, so you know who probably got
left out. :-(

However, the folks I bought my Skyline card from also carry the
Harmony card ($25 versus the $27 I paid for the Skyline). They say
that the card is MacOS compatable. I don't now if they just copied
the info from the Skyline card info or what, but you could give them
a call, I guess.

http://www.emicrox.com/eShop/product.aspx?cid=-1&more=1&keywords=harmony+&pid=875472

Here's what the page says:

"11 Mbps maximum performance up to 150 feet, Supports
industry-standard WEP security, IEEE 802.11b Wi-Fi Compatible, Works
with Macintosh and Windows laptop computers."

That's what they say about the Skyline card, too. FWIW.

Re: PB 1400 questions

2003-08-17 Thread Robert Eye
Currently, I'm running a PB 1400c/166, 64 megs RAM, OS 8.1.
[snip]
Second, I recently read about using compact flash cards to extend
the memory on this computer; is this true, and could somebody
explain how this works in laymen's terms please.
[snip]
Brian
Brian,

You *cannot* increase the size of the Mac's RAM with a Compact Flash (CF) card.

The CF card is read by the Mac as a type of external disk drive.

Some people have had success in using them as emergency boot disks,
whenin you install a System Folder and whatever disk recovery
applications you use. All you need is a CF card big enough to hold
the files.

You just insert the CF card, with a CF-to-PCMCIA adapter, into a PC
Card slot, power up the PB and do the four-finger salute
(apple-option-shift-delete keys) to make sure it boots off of a disk
different than the internal (alternately, you can select the CF
"disk" using the Startup Disk control panel, if the PB is initially
bootable from the HD).

This is nice if you don't have a functioning CD-ROM drive, or have to
use an external CD-ROM, like in my 5300cs. (Alas, I could never get
it to work on my 5300cs, but many people have had success with the
1400.)

You can also store files on it, read/write to it, just like any HD.

And, you can select a CF "disk" for use as the disk location for
Virtual Memory or cache memory for your web browser. For VM, turn the
option for VM *on* in the Memory control panel. Then select the CF
"drive" and tell it how much of the memory space you want to use.

Similarly for web browser cache, just tell the browser the location
and size of the cache file in the browser's Preferneces.

There are some limitations with the CF read/write lifetimes (range of
millions to tens-of-millions of cycles as MTTF). Still, they are
pretty cheap for what they do, especially the lower-valued cards.

One possibility: I'd intended to do a clean system install, but got started before
remembering that in system 7.x it's necessary to rename the system folder & file
first. Maybe it would be worthwhile to go back and reinstall?

Re: PB 5300cs Questions?

2003-03-11 Thread Robert Eye
Jason,

Speed Doubler: you'll need Speed Doubler 8 (specifically, version 8.1.2) to run on
MacOS8.x.

I'm running SD 8 with MacOS 8.1 on my 5300cs, and it runs fine. There's a noticable
difference running with and without SD 8. I'd guess that a lot of the Finder code is
still 68k in 8.1, because Finder operations are faster using SD 8.

Check ebay or post a WTB on the Swap List to find a copy. There are 6 listing on ebay
right now for SD 8.

Did your PB 5300cs come with 16 MB on the motherboard (16 m-board + 32 module = 48
Total)? I thought all the 5300cs models only had 8 MB on the motherboard (which, when
adding a 32 MB card, would give you 40 MB, not 48 MB)?

I just installed a 32M RAM module into my 5300cs (had a 16M module before) and wanted
to do some more stuff to it.

I currently have OS 7.6.1 on it. I have OS 8 (and the 8.1 updater), but was wondering
if it would be wise to update. The machine currently has 48M in it, with the stock
770M HD. Pretty much all I use it for is Office

Also, I have Speed Doubler 1.32 (?) on it now. If I upgraded to 8, would this program
still work, or would I have to find a newer version? It made a noticeable difference
with 7.6.1.

Re: Powerbook 5300 ????'s

2003-03-07 Thread Robert Eye
Card compatability has to do with making a boot disk from the card, as opposed to
using it for Virtual Memory (the card is used more as a solid-state HD than RAM). I
don't recall that anyone ever posted a problem with any brand of Compact Flash card
for VM, but I and others posted some problems with certain brands for using as boot
disks on 5300's.

You can also get a large enough card to use part of it as VM and part of it for
browser cache.

It generally works, although there are reports of incompatibilities with certain flash
memory cards, and it's really not that much faster than virtual memory, anyway. The
bottleneck becomes the 16-bit PC Card bus
instead of the hard drive. What it does do is allow you to save power because the hard
drive isn't being written to constantly for virtual memory.

Idea #2) Use the Network SW Installer . . . :

to install Appletalk onto a Disk Tools floppy (use the custom install option to
install _just_ AT.) I tried the 7.5.3 and 7.6 Disk Tools 2 disks, discard the usual
utility pair to make enough room. You'll need to
add the Chooser and the Appleshare Chooser extension (those bits from the NAD seem to
work OK) to access your AS network volumes. I'm browsing volumes on my G3 DT under
9.2.2 from my 5300 as I type this. There
_should_ be enough room to install a enet PC card driver along with basic enet
support, but I've not tested that yet.

The end result of the above procedure provided me with a close approximation of the
good ol' Network Access Disk, but for PBs 5300/190/2300.

Clark,

Thanks for the note. I should have said I tried *almost* all of Apple's suggestions
(of which yours was one). :-)

I actually first tried a less invasive method that Apple recommends. Here's what I
did (from Knowledge Base article 11368):

"1. Open Stickies from the Apple Menu, open a new note (any note).
2. Type anything (as long as characters are there).
3. Select Export Text from the File Menu.
4. Name the file "AppleShare PDS" (capitalization not necessary, but the spelling and
the space is important).
5. Save the file on the first (root) level of the Startup Drive.
6. A dialog box will come up asking if you want to replace the file? Yes, you want to
replace it.

Note: If it does not prompt you to replace the file (step 6 above), then it didn't
work. Check the file name and saving destination."

Result: worked like a charm! File Sharing came right up.

Thanks again for your help!

File Sharing won't start up on PB5300cs

2003-02-22 Thread Robert Eye
I'm tryning to figure out why I can *no longer* connect my iMac (original Bondi) to my
PB5300cs via ethernet.

PB setup - MacOS 8.1 (just did a fresh install to see if that was the problem - it
doesn't appear to be), 40 MB RAM, GV Platinum Pro modem/ethernet card, AppleTalk set
to Alternate Ethernet and turned On.

I open the File Sharing control panel, set up a Network Identity, and click on the
Start button underneath "File Sharing off" and wait - and wait and wait. The folder
icon has the network symbol blinking on and off next to it, but file sharing never
starts - I hear HD activity for a little bt but then it stops (FWIW, the iMac HD
activity contiues until the Start/Cancel File Sharing button says Stop, the the HD
activity ceases). It just says "File Sharing starting up" and will stay like that
until the battery dies an hour and a half later, if I let it go that long.

The MAJOR pain about this is that it *used* to work.

I can turn on file sharing on the iMac and connect to the PB that way - the iMac's
shared HD comes right up on the PB screen, and I can transfer files back and forth, so
I assume that the ethernet connection is working ok.

I also went through Apple's suggestions on their Knowledge Base on file sharing a
PB5300, but to no avail.

Any suggestions from y'all will be greatly appreciated!

How to "jump start" a dead BTI NiMH battery?

2003-02-21 Thread Robert Eye
I have one of those high-capacity BTI batteries for a PB 5300 that Apple's Battery
Recondition killed. :-( It worked fine until I ran the software. Neither the PB nor
a VST charger could recogonize it or bring it back to life.

Someone posted that you can "jump start" some of these PB NiMH batteries with a
lab-type power supply (I have access to some which I believe would do the job).

Could whoever posted info on how to do this please reply (on of off list)? And, what
are the "pin outs" for the battery contacts?

Thanks in advance.

There's a good Japanese site with lots-o-drivers for Mac NIC cards (including the one
mentioned in the message to which I am replying):

Re: partitioning HD for VM

2003-01-23 Thread Robert Eye
According to Apple's KB article 30621:

Mac OS Extended (HFS Plus): Erase Disk Compared With Initialize

TOPIC

This article compares the Erase Disk... command with initialization of a disk as they
relate to the Mac OS Extended format.

DISCUSSION

Drive Setup performs other routines that Erase disk does not. **Erase disk will only
initialize the Partition selected.** (emphasis added) Drive Setup Initialize will
reset the Boot Block and Partition Map as well as the Partition(s) selected. Note:
Drive Setup Initialize will erase the entire hard disk. A single partition can not be
selected for initialization.

---

So it appears that Erase Disk will give you what you want. Alas, it does require
retsering with VM off to erase and then another restart with VM turned back on (sorry
I forgot to mention that before). An optimizer/defragger might be a better choice.
(Never had a problem with NDD/Speed Disk or TechTool, although TT hasn't been very
helpful, either. Norton's saved me a few times.)

Perhaps FWB HD Toolkit can reformat an individual parition?

Sure. But that doesn't necessarily reformat the partition. Someone more in the know
than I will correct me if I'm wrong, but I think choosing that option just wipes the
section of the desktop db/df that corresponds to the partition (essentially erasing
the disk), then marks the files on the disk as deleted. I'm not entirely sure what
happens if you choose to change the HFS scheme (Mac OS Standard <->
Mac OS Extended) when you erase the disk, though. "Erase Disk..." works differently
on floppies, of course.

I'm not sure how this affects disk fragmentation. I don't really know anything about
how "Erase Disk..." works. It just might be the answer to a quick reformat. OTOH,
you won't be able to erase the
volume if you have VM turned on and set to use that volume... So you'll have to turn
VM off before you erase the volume.

You are right about Norton and TechTool. I just didn't mention them because I don't
like them. ;-)

Can't you just select the partition and use the "Erase Disk" command on the partition?
Or isn't that an option when you use the partition as VM? (I confess I haven't tried

(Norton Utilites and TechTool Pro will also optimize/ defragment the drive, FWIW.)

Well, that sort of depends. Once you partition a disk, if you want to reformat an
individual partition using a Drive Setup, you have to reformat the ENTIRE disk. IMO
this is a major fault of drive setup, but I understand it does this to protect the
integrity of the partition table. You can jump through hoops using 3rd party disk
formatters (or my favorite - pdisk) to format individual partitions...

But what I believe you are thinking of is not re-formatting the partition but
optimizing or defragmenting it. You _can_ do that to individual partitions without
trouble. DiskWarrior does this excellently.

Re: Powerbook 520 ????

2002-12-20 Thread Robert Eye
John,

ISP: Most any ISP can handle a Macintosh running anything from System 7 upwards. It's
just that their support prople can't handle questions about it (many can't deal with
the latest and greatest, but that's another story).

If they handle TCP/IP and PPP, you should be ok. I'm willing to bet that you can
connect to AT&T with your PB520.

You just need the DNS addresses and set-up info, and e-mail server information to
enter into the various apps on your Mac (either Open Transport or MacTCP, and
MacPPP/FreePPP/OT-PPP/Apple Remote Access, and your e-mail client).

They have to give this info to other Mac users for later Macs, so it should be no
problem for them to give it to you.

You might have more luck with a local ISP, as they seem to be a little more helpful at
providing useful information and assitance.

You also might try one of the Mac ISP's; I use MacDialUp (http://www.macdialup.com) -
the initial e-mail they sent after I set up my account was pretty detailed about
settings and where they go.

E-Mail Client: I'd recommend Eudora as an e-mail client 3.1.3 for this machine (works
on a Mac Plus or later with system 7 or higher).

It's a nice basic e-mail client (I use it on my PB5300cs and Rev. A. iMac).

MacOS Version: Sorry, the last MacOS version to work on 68040 processor-based Macs was
MacOS 8.1. It works pretty well on them, too. Bump up the RAM on your PB520 to the
max for best results.

System 7.5.3 (free download from Apple, as well as the 7.5.5 updater) through 7.6.1
(still costs $) would provide a smaller RAM footprint and should run any app that is
capable of running on your PB520.

Bob Eye

The only internet service provider I know that can service anything under OS8.1 is AOL

upgrade to OS 8.5 or 8.6? From what I have found, it can't!

Are you saying that you took the 8 GB HD out of the external case and put it into your

Has anyone successfully used one of the IBM 8 GB PCMCIA external hard drives (**NOT**
the IBM MicroDrive) in a PowerBook (especially a 5300 series PB)? Any problems or
"gotchas" to watch out for?

TIA.

I have not yet, to date, been able to get my PowerBook 5300cs to boot from a CF card
(SanDisk 128 MB). I have tried:

- dragging the System folder on the HD to the CF card

- Installing 8.0/8.1 onto the card from a CD (and successively paring down extensions)
and over a network

- Using the System folder from the 8.1 Disk Tools (floppy) Disk

All to no avail; it gets through part of the boot process but I get a "bus error"
*every* time.

I did receive correspondence from another lister, wherein he said that two brands of
CF card worked for him, while a third brand (which indicated it was a "high speed"
card) did not (on a PB 540, MacOS 7.5.5). I have yet to go purchase another brand of
card to try. It seems from a previous thread on the issue that 1400's and 3400's are
less sensitive to the many variables of CF (or other PCMCIA memory cards/adapters)
booting than are the 5300's. Another lister received intermittent "bus error" when
attempting to boot a 5300-series PB from a CF card; sometimes it worked and sometimes
not.

There was a thread on this subject back in May, if you want to find more posts on the
subject.

Kent,

You might contact Mark Adams ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) - yes, that Mark Adams, who works
on porting a lot of games to the Mac. According to an article he and Suellen wrote at
MacCentral,

http://maccentral.macworld.com/news/9909/30.adamsapple.shtml

he worked at TechWorks on the development of Spiral. Perhaps he has some info.

Also have you contacted TechWorks? Worth a shot. :-)

Subject: Looking for Techworks Spiral

Hello folks, I'm new here. I recently got a Powerbook 520c and I've been having a
blast with it. One of the bits of software that I'm using is a demo copy of Spiral, a
neat little notebook utility that I got with the disk that comes with the book
"Powerbook: The Digital Nomad's Guide" by Andrew Gore and Mitch Ratcliffe.

Now I know that Techworks hasn't done software for years and my Google searching has
come up empty, but what I'm looking for is a full copy of Spiral. The demo version is
basically functional but it doesn't let me creat new Spiral books, just edit the
existing ones. So does anybody out there have an idea where I could get a full working
copy?

Re: Expansion options for a 5300?

2002-11-01 Thread Robert Eye
Michael,

You can use a Compact Flash card (or any card that has a type II PCMCIA reader, I'd
guess) as a quasi-hard drive (that's how it shows up on the desktop) for virtual
memory or for cache memory in web browsers. It does NOT increase the amout of RAM you
can use, so use as a RAM disk is out.

I tried using a 128 MB SanDisk Compact Flash card as an emergency boot "drive" (a lot
smaller than carrying around a CD-ROM drive), but I could never get my 5300cs to boot
from it successfully (I recall "bus error" to be the dominant fault). I did share
some correspondence where it was implied that there might be a difference between
manufacturers and achieving success with my intended use, but I never bought another
brand to try it out. I also received correspondence from 1400 owners which said this
application (boot disk) worked for them.

I also tried it for VM but I did not notice any speed difference in the short time I
used it. I may go back and try it again.

I'm looking forward to some success stories with a 5300 machine and a CF card as a
boot disk on this thread. :-)

Belkin F5D5020 PCMCIA Ethernet card in PB?

2002-08-16 Thread Robert Eye

Will a Belkin F5D5020 PCMCIA (Type II 16 bit) Ethernet card work in a PB? The bigger
question: Are there any Mac drivers for it?

The reason I ask is that Micro Center is selling them (in stores and on-line) for
$29.99 with a $25 rebate (must buy before 09/01/02, postmark by 10/01/02), making the
effective price $4.99. Nice deal if you don't have a card.

The link to the card is here:

http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0107494

and the rebate form is available on the page.

Looking forward to some replies on this one. Thanks.

Panasonic KXL-D740 SCSI CDROM with a PB??

2002-08-13 Thread Robert Eye

Does any one know if you can use (or has anyone successfully used) a Panasonic
KXL-D740 4x SCSI external CDROM with a 5300 series (or other SCSI) Powerbook?

What CD-ROM driver version do I need (Panasonic does not have drivers for the Mac)?

Can the 5300 use the PCMICIA connection, or does it have to use the SCSI port?

Is it hard to obtain a cable that will interface between the CD-ROM's half-pitch
50-pin connector with a Centronics or 25 pin D connector?

Thanks in adavnce!

Except that the Adaptec SCSI card mentioned (model info: PowerDomain SlimSCSI 1480) is
a 32 bit CardBus PCMCIA card, which won't work in a 5300 or a 540.

So, having an Adaptec PCMCIA SCSI card might handy not be a bad idea, even for a 5300c
or 540c, say, because at least you would have an alternate way of accessing SCSI
devices which don't seem to like the above-mentioned 'book's internal SCSI port.

There are also several web based tools that can read POP and IMAP4 mail accounts. I
personally like mail2web. It shows the headers and the size of the e-mail so you can
delete what you want, and it keeps the mail on your server so you can download it with
your regular client (even if you read your mail on mail2web). It's free, they have a
secure login option, and they are located at:

I use POP Monitor daily. You can see the headers of messages on the server before
downloading them, read or delete them if you want without downloading them, and the
latest version (shareware, $25) will send bounce messages, and has the ability to
create filters.

Between POP Monitor and Spamcop, I report spam when I want and never download it
except by accident occasionally.

Beverly,

It appeared to me that he was offering the UPDATES, not the full software packages.
The updtaes were available as free downloads on Connectix's web site, but are now
"abandonware," as Connectix no longer supports the products.

Did you contact him regarding this, or just kick him off without investigating?

If he was offering the full pacakge, I agree, he should be kicked off. The updates
are, possibly, another matter.

Re: new operating system for 5300cs

2002-06-06 Thread Robert Eye

DON'T DO THIS!! The MacOS isn't completely native PPC code - some of it is *still* 68K
code. Strip out the 68k code and you may have a non-functional system (or
application).

You can go the other way - strip out PPC code from an app or the system on a 68k-based
Mac. But don't strip out the 68k code from an app or the system on a PPC-based Mac.

Hope,

Use the "software install" disk. This one has the various applications as separate
installations.

However, DO NOT use the top level MacOS system install. This one will look for the
type of machine for which it was intended (iMac, G4, etc.). Rather, dig through the
various folders until you find one marked System Install (or something like that). In
this folder is another MacOS installer program. This one *should* work on any Mac.

I say should, because I used my MacOS Software Install disk from my Bondi iMac (now
running 8.6) to install 8.0 on my PB 5300cs. But I couldn't use the included 8.1
updater to go from 8.0 to 8.1 - I had to download the 8.1 updater directly from Apple.

Good luck.

Battery Recondition killed my battery!! Please help.

2002-06-01 Thread Robert Eye

In the attempt to use Apple's Battery Recondition to do just that, recondition a
battery, it appears to have destroyed the battery, or at least the battery's ability
to work in the PB.

The battery in question is a BTI Higher Capacity NiMH battery, Model number MC-1950.
The PB is a 5300cs. I kept the PB plugged in and ran Battery Recondition (the battery
was working fine before, I just figured that after a couple months of use it was due
for reconditioning) - it went through the white screen with the floating battery
symbol and then (having let Battery Recondition run overnight), when I awoke this
morning the PB was asleep. I woke it from sleep and shut it down. When I came back
this afternoon, the battery symbol in the menu bar had a X through it. Several
attempts to re-seat it in the battery compartment had no affect. When I tried to run
Battery Recondition again, it said there was no battery in the battery compartment.

Is this a common symptom of using Battery Recondition? Should I only use it with
Apple batteries? Any hope of getting the dead battery to recover? How do I go about
it?

Thanks in advance.

Bob Eye

Re: Using a CF card to boot a PB 5300cs?

2002-05-29 Thread Robert Eye

Richard,

Thanks for the information.

I hadn't considered that a different brand of card would make a difference. CompUSA
had 128 MB SanDisk (a pretty reliable brand) CF cards for $39.95 after rebate, so I
bought one. I guess I can use it in my digital camera if it won't work as a boot
disk. I might check at newegg.com and see what deals they are running on CF cards.

As for extensions, I get the same Bus Error with extensions on or off. I've even
pared down the extensions folder to just a few, but stil get the error - and all Apple
extensions, no 3rd party stuff. No extension shows as loading prior to the Bus Error,
but I guess I could Symbionts (sp?) to see if something is loading prior to the Bus
Error.

To get the CF card out of the slot, just press the small button on the side of the
5300 next to the card slot during a restart. You may need to keep pressing it until
it activates; it will usually pop out before the screen display comes on.

Re: Using a CF card to boot a PB 5300cs?

2002-05-28 Thread Robert Eye

Brian,

Thank you for your reply. I'm hoping others reply to this thread, as I know you and I
aren't the only ones who have tried this! :-)

I've tried multiple boots and restarts. "Bus error" every single time. FWIW, I am
using a SanDisk 128 MB CF card and a SanDisk CF-PCMCIA adapter.

The steps I took:

- De-activate the PC Exchange (or whatever they are called under 8.1) extensions and
restart, then format the 128 MB card as a Mac disk.

- Ethernet connected the PB to a Rev A iMac, shared the iMacs CD ROM drive with the
8.0 installer CD to the PB.

- Installed (easy install) MacOS 8.0 onto the CF from the PB over the "network."

- Copied the 8.1 updater ot the HD on the PB and updated the System on the CF to 8.1.

- Set CF as the Startup Disk and tried to boot from the CF. "Bus error," with
extensions on or off.

- Opened CF System folder and pared down various extensions and control panels that
were not needed.

- Again, set CF as the Startup Disk and tried to boot from the CF. "Bus error," with
extensions on or off.

The PCMCIA circuitry on the PB functions fine with two modems and the CF adapter for
transferring files. The PB just doesn't seem to want to boot from the CF card.

You wrote:

I get the bus error at the same place duing the boot process.

When I go back to the HD (by just taking the CF card adapter out after a restrat) the
PB boots fine the first time from the HD - it just takes it a few seconds to realize
that the CF is not installed, and then it switches over looking for another valid
System from which to boot.

I'll try copying the System from the PB to the CF, and also zapping the PRAM (which I
didn't think would be necessary, but you never know ...).

Subject: Re: Using a CF card to boot a PB 5300cs?

I'm booting a 1400 from CF with 8.1 just fine; Sandisk 64 meg w/ Sandisk PC Card
adapter. The goal was same as yours- get a Speed disk boot disk made so I could
defragment files.

I had to format it as a mac volume is all, then just drug the system folder from the
hard drive over (actually I only drug over the extensions and
cdevs actually needed, since 64 megs would not be enough for entire system folder plus
Norton Utils, I had to trim stuff that wasn't needed for Norton, plus make sure I had
"startup disk" and similar stuff that I would need).

If you installed from a CD, try just dragging a copy of your current system folder
over, then choosing the PC Card with the "startup disk" control panel.

and of course after I did all this, I got one of the IBM 20gig fluid spindle drives on
clearance from OWC and thus made the defrag I did on the old drive moot :) but I will
say- the fluid spindle HD's are just about as quiet as booting from a PC Card!

Message-id:

OK, I just booted the 5300ce from its internal HD, moved the PC Card that boots the
1400 fine into the 5300, chose the PC Card volume in the startup disk control panel.
Restart from pulldown menu.

First two boots, I got a bus error after the MacOS8 splash window first appears. 3rd
boot, it boots fine from the CF.

Select startup disk to be the HD again, first boot, bus error, click restart, boots
fine from the HD the second time.

Switching back to PC Card, first boot: illegal instruction; second boot: bus error;
3rd boot- fine.

Switching back from PC Card to HD, this time choosing "restart" then hitting the reset
button on the back of the PB as well while the screen is still blanked, it still takes
a few tries before a successful boot from the HD.

So perhaps try a couple more times, It seems something persists (in PRAM?) that
confuses things. I didn't zap the PRAM as I seem to recall losing my startup disk
selection on desktops when I did that and had multiple system volumes possible (but
powerbooks seem to break rules, or at least have a different set- don't even get me
started on powerbook SCSI!).

I can switch back and forth between HD and Pc Card boot volume without the errors on
the 1400cs. This could be an artifact of using a boot folder from a 1400 to boot the
5300cs, but given your experience, perhaps not.

Using a CF card to boot a PB 5300cs?

2002-05-26 Thread Robert Eye

I've been attempting to configure a compact flash card as an emergency boot and repair
disk for my 5300cs.

I can successfully install the OS (8.1 in this case) and various utilities (incl.
Norton, Disk Warrior).

When I try to boot from the card, I first get the start of the boot sequence and the
smiling MacOS screen and progress bar. I then get a bomb with a "bus error" and am
told to boot with extensions off. Doing so results with another "bus error."

FWIW, ejecting the CF card during the restart allows successfull booting from the main
HD.

What am I missing? Or is this something that just cannot be done?

(I've checked the Maclaunch archives of this list, for what that's worth - it seems
they only keep the last month of postings. Nothing there, or from a Google search,
about using a CF card with a powerbook 5300.)

I eagerly await all reasonable replies. Thanks.

"blotchy" screen on PB 5300cs?

2002-05-15 Thread Robert Eye

The PB 5300cs I bought a couple months ago has had, since I got it, a "blotchy" screen
appearance (sorry, I can't think of a better word for it). If I use a lot of contrast
and a bright mono-colored background (I made a few in Apple Works), it's sort-of ok,
but a medium or dark color shows the "blotches" (especially a gray background screen
and the light or medium mono-colored Apple Desktop Backgrounds from MacOS 8.1).

The outside of the outer transparent cover of the display itself is clean.

Is this blotchy appearance:

- the screen going bad?
- bad backlighting?

- the LCD display itself (not the cover) in need of cleaning? Can it be cleaned?
I have a 6 month warranty on the unit, so I am thinking about sending it back to have
the display checked. It has already been in for Apple's REP program (date stamp in
the battery compartment and an AA serial number), and was listed by the seller as a
factory refurbished machine. It was drop shipped form Pre-Owned Electronics, who I
know generally does good work on Mac systems.

Any insights appreciated. Thanks.

Updater files for Word 5.0? (was Re: best writing app and word processor for 170)

I have a copy of Word 5.0 on floppy disks. How/where can I get the updates to go to

upgrades, but I have never found the files for updating. Can anyone help? Thanks.

Re: 7.5.3 vs 8.1

2002-05-01 Thread Robert Eye

Another data point ...

I ran 7.6.1 on my 5300cs (40 MB RAM) and recently upgraded to 8.1. 8.1 seemed more
stable and a little faster.

Then I added Speed Doubler 8(.1.2), which, IMO, made more of a difference than going
from 7.6.1 to 8.1. The nice thing about MacOS 8.x is that you have some additional
features, and you can use some of the later software. 8.1 does use more RAM, though.

Slower than normal screen redraws on PB5300?

2002-04-25 Thread Robert Eye

Anyone have any insight as to the possible reasons for slow screen redraws on my PB
5300cs? When I say slow, I mean anywhere from several seconds of a blank window before
it updates, to it staying that way as long as I want.

I noticed it first with Eudora (v3.1.3); after reading and closing a message the Inbox
window would be blank - not showing any of the messages, although the window outline
and the title bar were ok. I could leave it this way for hours, and have left it this
way for several minutes with no change. The cursor remained as a large cross, not an
arrow like it should be. You could select and highlight and even read the message, but
you couldn't see it in the Inbox window. When I go down to the slider, though, and
click, the window instantly (well, for a 5300 anyway) redraws.

Now it seems to be happening to most all the applications, although Finder windows
have not been affected (yet). The one thing in common is that the cursor stays at
whatever it was, either a text entry I-beam or a hand or whatever - everything except
an arrow.

I don't recall having installed any new applications or extensions, but ...

As always, any help appreciated.

Bob Eye

YES we have MANUALS! (was Re: 5300 & Focus video/ethernet card)

2002-04-17 Thread Robert Eye

Bruce,

Don't panic. Try here instead:

http://home.wanadoo.nl/manual.man/manuals.html

And *don't* try to go to the main ftp directory before going to the
desired manual, or you will get the Access Denied error. Just scroll
down to the ftp link and download the desired .pdf file. I thought it
was broken, too, when I couldn't get to

ftp://ftp.info.apple.com/Apple_Support_Area/Misc/Service/servicemanuals/

but just doing a clink-and-hold on the link to get the option to
download the file located at:

ftp://ftp.info.apple.com/Apple_Support_Area/Misc/Service/servicemanuals/powerbook_190.5300.pdf

worked just fine! In fact, I just tried it again (4/18/2002 @ 12:11 AM
EDT) to make sure it still works. (You might have to set a preference
in your browser to send a valid e-mail address for ftp access, but I
can't find that setting right now in IE 4.5 on my PB 5300cs, and I
haven't checked iCab 2.7.1.)

Re: Ethernet and PB3400

2002-03-28 Thread Robert Eye

According to Apple, it was not necessarily fixed with the version of OT
that came with MacOS 8.5. FWIW ...

Mac OS: DHCP Issues With Open Transport 2.5.1 and 2.5.2

TOPIC

This article describes several issues related to DHCP client
implementation found in Open Transport 2.5.1 and 2.5.2. These issues may
result in the disruption of IP services or other operational anomalies
when using DHCP to acquire IP configuration information. The article
also offers solutions that should allow you to continue to use IP
services.

Summary

The DHCP client implementation included in Open Transport (OT) 2.5.1,
included with Mac OS 8.6 on selected systems, and in OT 2.5.2, included
in Mac OS 9, has two known issues. These issues may result in the
disruption of IP services or other operational anomalies when using DHCP
to acquire IP configuration information."

and at the end:

"Solution

These issues are resolved in the Open Transport (OT) 2.6 release. OT 2.6
is available via two methods:

* automatic Software Updates feature of Mac OS 9.0 for any computer
running Mac OS 9.0.

* manual download at http://www.apple.com/swupdates for Power Macintosh
G4, iBook, and iMac (Slot-loading) computers running Mac OS 8.6 and as
an alternate download method for any computer running Mac OS 9.0."

I guess it doesn't work with 8.5 or 8.6? .. anyone get it to work with
an earlier OS? Please post how.

There's also more information located in Knowledge Base article 58372

It's not the OS in general, it's Open Transport in particular. Older
versions of OT did not work and play well with DHCP.

Search Apple'sKnowledge Base for "DHCP and Open Transport" and follow
the recommendations.

For Maria Re: Help with OT/PPP !

2002-03-22 Thread Robert Eye

For Maria,

Yes, there are preferences for Open Transport and OT/PPP. First, make
sure you have all the necessary information written down for filling out
the TCP/IP and PPP information, as deleting the preferences will delete
this information (DNS entries, phone number, modem scripts, etc.).

I don't use OT/PPP on my 5300cs, but for Open Transport the two pref
files you need to delete are:

TCP/IP Preferences (Preferences folder)
MacTCP DNR (System folder)

The OT/PPP prefs sould have PPP in the name.

Good luck.

Robert Eye
