There is also a shareware program out there called Battery Amnesia.
I've found it pretty good for getting rid of the memory effect on my
Powerbook 1400. I cn now get close to 2 hours of on time from one
battery.

I'm at a coffee house writing this on my 1400 on wifi.
My machine is a 166 with 40 MB RAM and runs OS 9.1 just fine.

Not as snappy as 8.6 with low RAM space but I like the features enough to put
up with the trade off.
Also some software needs OS 9
A 133 may be better off with 8.6 though.

Thanks, looks like I'll keep OS 8.6 for now. Anyway does
RamDoubler really work?

I do like OS 8.6 and it runs fast for me, I just need to find a G3 upgrade
  somewhere.

Noah, I had OS 8.6 on a 1400 w/56MB RAM, went to OS 9.0.4, then 9.1
for a while, eventually back to OS 8.6 ...

Do get more real Ram !!!

I agree w/ Howard (see below), I think RamDoubler 8 out performs
Apples Virtual Memory using OS 8.6.

It accomplishes the task in a more efficient manner and is somewhat tweakable
If you do go to OS 9.x, you'll need RamDoubler 9 ...

You could join the LEM Swap List, then place a WTB for a G3 upgrade.
They do pop up occasionally.

This may have been discussed in past posts, but I use a CompactFlash
memory card w/ adapter in one of the PCMCIA slots.
I keep some apps on the card to free up HD space.
The CF card will appear and work as a removable hard drive on your Desktop.

NON removable if you direct Virtual Memory to the CF card ...
BAD stuff will happen if you eject the card while the PB is running !!!

Fry's had a 1 day sale recently, 512 MB CF $20 after rebate, $$ to MBs,
not great compared to a used 4 GB HD, but pretty versatile,
and no lost screws ...

CF usage has been discussed here before, but when has that ever stopped
us? :)

I used to boot my 5300 from a CF--the 512 has plenty of room to hold a
system folder, and everything loads faster than the HD. I actually had
the system folder on the HD too--when I wanted to use my wifi card--I
never could get the hang of the location manager, so when I wanted to do
wifi, I just popped out the CF, and when the PB couldn't find it's defined
startup device, it defaulted to the next mass storage device, the HD, and
booted from it. Worked just fine until the 5300 died and and I didn't
want to buy a 3rd unit. (Well, I did end up getting a G4 Powerbook, but I
still run my PPC'd 520c at home all the time. :) )

I agree with the other listers; without a G3 upgrade in your 1400, running
OS9 , while certainly possible (a friend has it on his 5300ce!) , is not going
to set any speed records. A 233mhz G3 processor should be in the $50 range
now, or even cheaper is the 183mhz PPC upgrade, if you can find one.

I would also say get yourself the RAM module you need to boost your onboard
RAM up to the max 64mb. Then, instead of using virtual, get yourself a copy of
RAM Doubler. That at least makes the 64mb ceiling possible to deal with.

Finally, apart from some high-end things, 8.6 and 9.0 seem pretty much the
same to me, although admittedly I may not know what I am talking about. I
remember I once was interesed in putting iTunes on my main Powerbook, and
contemplated moving to OS9, but then I found a patch that would allow iTunes to
be used
it 8.6.

Anyway, good luck, and have fun! Patiently upgrading is half the excitement

I've tried OS 9.1 on all three of the 1400 flavors and even with 64MB
of RAM they don't run nealry as quick as with OS 8.6. I have always
put OS 8.6 back on the 1400's because it they were too slow.

Without a G3 upgrade in a 1400 it will not handle OS 9 very well.

2006-01-17 Thread Richard Adams

Welcome back, Noah!

I've never run OS 9, so I have no input (other than to say I repeatedly hear
that it runs kinda slow on a stock 1400). Are you thinking of getting a G3
upgrade at some point?

What features of OS9 are you really wanting to get? I've considered it, but
haven't heard any compelling reasons to get off 8.5 yet.

Also, I'm a bit curious how you make do with such a smallish hard drive. I
get by okay on one about the same size, but I'm more willing than most to
run older (therefore, smaller) versions of many of my apps. Even at that,
though, I'm starting to feel the squeeze. What applications (and versions)
are you running on your machine?

Thanks for any insights,

Richard

I'm a big fan of both RamDoubler and SpeedDoubler--both work really well
on both my 520c and 5300. Try and get the last version (ramdoubler 8 and
speeddoubler 8) for best compatibility.

1400 Mac OS 9

2006-01-16 Thread Noah Wood
Hello, and first off I would like to announce my re-subscription to
this mailing list. I left as my 1400 died but after about 4 months I
used it and it started to work. Now I have the urge to upgrade my
1400 to Mac OS 9. At the moment I have Mac OS 8.6 and it runs
smoothly and I like it, but I like some of the features of Mac OS 9.
So please give me your thoughts!

2006-01-16 Thread Caleb Cupples
With those specs, I would clearly advise upgrading the RAM in your
1400. It really takes 64 MB of RAM to really make 9 sing, at the least.
Of course, I haven't run 9 on anything less than a G3 Lombard with 192
MB of RAM and the 400 MHz processor, so I can't speak for a 1400.

Agreed. However, with a G3, I *do* recommend OS 9, especially if you have
full RAM. I ran 9.1 on my 1400+G3/333 and it wasn't too bad.

Re: Xpostfacto and OS X on older PowerBooks

2005-12-21 Thread KG
So it's possible to run Mac OS X on a PowerBook 3400 and a Kanga...but my
question is, how fast (or not fast, rather) is OS X going to run on a
603e chip? Has anybody tried this? Does anybody have any experience with
this matter?

The 3400 video controller is fully supported; the Kanga's will only work in
256 colors at the present time. The Kanga's controller is a slightly
improved version of the Chips Technologies controller in the 3400.

I've run OS X on two 3400's, or should I say, the same one with a new logic
board after it developed sleeping sickness. The first time, it was a
3400/240 with 144 MB of RAM, which ran 10.1.5. Performance was pretty bad,
the system just chokes on anything graphical. Later on, I booted it in
10.1.5 after replacing the logic board with a new 3400/180 board, which as
you might imagine was even worse. The system now runs 10.2.8 and the CPU has
been chipped to a stable 198 MHz by replacing the clock crystal. It's faster
than it was before, but still not anything I'd want to use on a day-to-day
basis, and I usually stay in OS 9. (Interestingly, the 198/44 configuration
seems faster than 240/40 in a lot of cases.)

Re: Which version of OS X?

2005-12-15 Thread VICTORIA.DUGGAN

I Have to agree with drew on that one.
10.3 seems to start faster and run a-lot better on a g3 powerbook and
the interface seems more easy on the eye that 10.2.
But being a pre G3 list i would say, What's the specs of the 603 you
are trying to load it on. (this really does matter)
I did get 10.1 to run on a 3400c with maxed out ram and 10gb hdd
but some of the ports did not work and also the book was so slow that
it hung most of the time . My first impression of it though was (hey
great I done it! ) (what's next?) moved on to try Linux still doing
that.

10.3 still requires a G3 even with XPF, AFAIK.

That said, I don't really notice a speed difference between 10.2

I have managed to do so with 10.1 running on an 240mhz PB 3400 (with 144mb

might make things faster, but I have no experience with it so I cannot tell

I haven't run OS X on a PowerBook with a 603e, but I have run it on a
9600/300 (604e) with 768 MB RAM and on a PowerBook G3 233/512k cache
with 320 MB RAM, and they seemed about the same speed. Neither was
particularly responsive, but they were at least useable if I had no
alternative. On a 3400c/240, it might be bearable. On a 3400c/180,
it might run, but I don't know how much fun it would be.

The last I knew, the video controller wasn't fully supported, so you
could only get 256 colors or so in OS X.

You really need more RAM than 32MB for about anything these days.
OS 9.2 will run with OS9helper but I wouldn't suggest OS 9x anything
without a G3 card and the RAM maxed out with 64MB and RamDoubled using
RamDoubler 9.

A 1400 will run OS 8.6 pretty well with the RAM maxed but with 32MB I
would suggest some flavor of System 7 like 7.5.5 or 7.6 and your
friend will be happier with the speed. I never liked OS 8 or 8.1
because they are buggy. And there's not much you can run on OS 8.1
that you can't run on System 7.5. And System 7.6 is an excellent
stable OS if you can find it.

Forget about 9.2.2, 8.6 would be the latest greatest for 32MB. I have
a 133Mhz daughtercard gathering dust that I could send gratis. That
is a big kick over the 117 because of the cache.

Re: 1400c OS Question

2005-11-22 Thread darkwolf45
Simply put, don't bother with anything above OS 8.6. 9.2 will not run
on any 1400 without some hacking, the best you can consider is 9.1, and
I wouldn't bother with that unless you have a G3 processor card in it.
32 megs of RAM should get someone by in OS 8.6, but more is always
nice. I think 8.1 would run with less RAM being used up, but it has
less features too.
I'd suggest you take the 133 mHz processor the other gentleman offered
and put that in (it's super duper easy, trust me, you can handle it).

It should

If you do a clean install, you will have a previous system folder in
your hard drive. It will contain all the control panels and extensions
from the old system. Check that folder against the new folder to see if
you need to move anything. If you haven't installed anything, you
probably won't have to do this. I can't remember what version, if any,
of Netscape shipped with OS 8 so check for anything related to Netscape 3.

Some systems won't let you downgrade, so I hope this works for you.

Here's exactly what I did:
1. I painstakingly copied all 19 files to my PowerBook on a floppy disk
2. I made a 5MB RAM disk
3. I installed a minimum System Folder onto the RAM disk
4. I booted off of the RAM disk
5. I renamed my System Folder
6. I put my System file in a different folder
7. I installed OS 7.5.3 on my hard disk
8. I copied the nessecary extensions and control panels from my old
System Folder to my new one
9. I deleted my old System Folder

In the end my efforts were successful. I also upgraded my RAM to 20MB,
so now it starts up way faster than OS 8.0. And Netscape did work.
Thanks for the help!

Re: Trouble finding Brother HL-1870N printer on PB w/OS 8.6

2005-11-03 Thread Gary F. Daught

Jared,

Yes, I am using a network connection, and yes, all the cables are
connected. I am using LaserWriter 8 (v. 8.5.6). I have a Printer
Descriptions folder inside the Extensions folder. The Brother printer
is in there along with all the Apple LaserWriter printers. But again,
when I select LW8 in the Chooser, I don't get ANY PostScript printers
to select from. I don't get it. I'm going to try to reinstall LW8.
Anything else I'm missing? Thanks!

Greetings. This may be too specific a question. I have a Brother
HL-1870N networked laser printer. I am trying to install the
driver onto my PB2400c running OS 8.6. The driver is supposed to
be compatible. The installation process appears to proceed
normally. Then I go to the Chooser and click on the LaserWriter 8
icon in the left-hand window. This is supposed to bring-up a
PostScript Printer for me to select in the right-hand window.
However, when I click on the LW8 icon no printer selections are
available in the right-hand window. When I try to find the driver
extension in the Extensions folder, or elsewhere it is nowhere to
be found! I don't get it. Suggestions?

Are your cables correctly connected, and if so, is it switched on. I
assume you are using a networked connection?

Long delay loading Control Strip after startup (OS 8.6)?

2005-11-03 Thread Gary F. Daught
Greetings. Sudden issue has arisen when I start-up OS 8.6 on my
PB2400c. Everything on the desktop loads up right away, but the
Control Strip now takes 30 seconds or so to load. I tried trashing
the Control Strip Prefs and rebuilding the Desktop file. What's going
on?! I'm trying to remember when it started, and the only thing I can
think of is that I forgot to eject my ethernet pc card once recently
before a restart. Related? Fix?

Thanks!

I think the best way is to do a clean install. Also I think 7.5 will be
peppier than 8.
I'm currently running 7.5.5 on my 5300ce even though I could run all the
way up to 9.1 I keep it at 7.5 for the speed boost. It really zips. And
the main apps I use run on 7.5 as well. I don't use it to surf the web
just mostly for documents.

Find 9.1, which IIRC was the last OS version for the 3400.

That's a common problem with Mac specific install CD/DVD's. Most
install disks that came with specific Macs like iBooks, Powerbooks,
eMacs and iMacs will not work on anything but what it was bundled
with.

I have seen some eMac disks that work as universal installers and I
have a grey iMac OS 9.1 CD that is a universal installer and works
with anything. That's why the full retail versions sell for more on
the used market.

Why not use OS 9.1, which has run well on my several 3400c and Kanga

Greetings again. I forgot to mention, as hinted by Ron, that you need
to update to at least 9.1 before you can use OS 9 Helper on your
3400. Get all your OS 9 updates from Apple here http://
docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75288. You need to have at
least 9.0 to start. Once you've updated to 9.1, then incrementally
install first 9.2.1 and then 9.2.2 updates using the patch as
instructed on the site below.

Re: Ethernet communication problem between OS 8.6 and 10.4.2

2005-10-31 Thread Gary F. Daught
Greetings. Success! Bruce, I had 3.8.x already installed. However, I
got the 3.8.8 updater from Apple's older software site, and this
worked fine!

Thanks also to Dan, who directed me to the article on info.apple.com.
As suggested by the article, I still cannot login eMac (10.4.2)
2400c (8.6). But I CAN log into my eMac from my 2400c. File copying
is a breeze. And what is more, I am doing it over the wireless
network, so I don't even have to mess with the ethernet card and
cable at all!

One place where I imagine still needing the card and cable will be
for network printing to my laser printer, so I'm happy to have picked
it up. Now to test...

Apple removed AFP/AT from Tiger. It only supports AFP/IP.

Mac OS 8.6 does not natively support AFP/IP.

To support AFP/IP on Mac OS 8.6, add a product like ShareWay

iTunes 1.1 OS 8.6 install on PB2400c SUCCESS! / How hot do pc cards run?

2005-10-29 Thread Gary F. Daught
Greeings. Thanks for all the helpful suggestions helping get iTunes
1.1 installed on my PB2400c running OS 8.6. Success at last!

In my last email I reported having successfully located iTunes 1.1
from several list members and the OS 8 patch from http://
macupdate.com. I also indicated a successful patch on (yes) BOTH the
1.1 installer, and then on the application and extension, but I was
experiencing crashes (error types 9, 11) during the set-up after
launching iTunes for the first time. I tried increasing memory—no help.

The suggestion that did it was from David Sims. I still had QuickTime
3 on the 'Book. When I updated to v. 5.0.2 (still on Apple's site)
iTunes 1.1, now patched for OS 8.6, worked perfectly! Thanks David!!!

I think I am just about totally set. Wireless card, ethernet pc card,
updated browser, Office 98, and now iTunes so I can listen to my
favorite internet radio stations! I know iTunes 1.x doesn't support
AAC, so I'll have to re-rip any CDs to mp3. But I'll wait on this
until I get a larger hard drive. The old 1.3GB in there now is over
half full. I also want to look into a compact flash/pc card adapter
to run as a boot disk with my system and apps installed.

Oh, thinking of pc cards... I noticed when I eject my wireless or
ethernet cards they are pretty hot. I am assuming this is normal. But
is there anything I need to be concerned about here? Any strategies
for cooling—like, maybe one of those pads with the risers on the back
to allow circulation underneath the 'Book?

Thanks again to everyone! This is a great list—VERY helpful!

iTunes 1.1 and OS 8.6 iTunes patch problems

Greetings. Thanks to the persons who sent me an image of iTunes 1.1.
I also found the patch to run iTunes on OS 8.6. The patch appears to
have went well, EXCEPT that when I attempt to launch iTunes, I get to
the third setup screen and it crashes, returning error type 9 and 11
messages. I increased the memory to iTunes. No help. I can find any
contemporary support for the patch. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Hello,
Did the patch have the information about requiring a minimum version
of Quicktime? If my memory serves me, you are required to have a
certain version of quicktime for itunes to work in 8.6.

I'm going from memory here but I think this patch program had to be
applied to the iTunes installer and also to the iTunes application
once installed. The patch is applied to the installer to get it to
install the software under 8.x and to the application to make it
actually work under 8.6.

Then again I could be completely wrong and it was some other program
but I'm pretty sure it was iTunes.

Best web browser for PB2400c running OS 8.6? Finding earlier iTunes versions?

2005-10-26 Thread gfdaught
Greetings again. I am seeking your recommendations on the best web browser to
use on my PB2400c with 80MB RAM, running Mac OS 8.6? I have downloaded IE 5.1.7
and Netscape 4.8 to my desktop Mac. But wanted some feedback before installing
onto my 'Book.

Also, when I had a PB3400c a while back, I remember finding an earlier version
of iTunes (though I running OS 9.2.2 on it). I don't recall either the version
or where I found it. Can someone direct me to source for iTunes and the version
that runs on OS 8.6?

Thanks!

Hi,
You can still download iTunes 2.0.4 at VersionTracker.com for Mac OS,
however, it says OS 9.0.4 or higher. The only Web browser that I
know of that is still being actively developed for Mac OS 8.6 and
above is iCab. There is a new Beta3 version available for that.

What you're looking for is iTunes Mac OS 8 patch 1.1.3. I use it on my

Best OS for my PB2400?

2005-10-09 Thread Gary F. Daught
Greetings. The PowerBook 2400c I am getting is currently configured
with 2GB hard drive, 80MB RAM, and running System 7.6. I amy
eventually opt for a larger hard drive, but will likely live with the
existing 80MB RAM. I am thinking about an OS upgrade and would be
interested in your advice regarding the best OS to run under this
configuration. Oh, I am definitely interested in getting a wireless
pc card, and may eventually get a USB pc card (if the 2400 is truly
CardBus compliant). Thoughts?

2005-10-09 Thread KG
I'd run OS 8.6 on a 2400 with that configuration. It can do OS 9, but 9 in
my experience is a little sluggish on a 603e unless you're using a 3400c or
a desktop with 128MB or more of RAM. I think you'd find that 8.6 gives you a
good balance of features without OS 9's sometimes bloated feeling.

This is a problem that you must resolve. Without an alternate
ethernet option in appletalk and (whatever the regular netowrk
control panel was called in 8.1) your card isn't available for use.

What options do you have in the internet connections control panel
(TCP/IP or network or whatever it was called in 8.1- the same place
you select DHCP etc).

Also, Appletalk is different than TCP/IP network settings, you want
the other network control panel for your initial setup.

Re: PB 1400, OS 8.1 and Wi-fi

2005-09-29 Thread Kenneth Vann

Date: Wed, 28 Sep 2005 10:01:24 -0700
From: Roger Andre [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: Re: PB 1400, OS 8.1 and Wi-fi

Hi Kenneth,

Thanks for the help. Here is what I know/see:

- I have never setup a pcmcia ethernet card in this machine, as I could
not find drivers for either the Linksys or Belkin cards that I have. I
did setup a Linksys 56k modem however.

- I do not have an Alternate Ethernet connection option in my
Appletalk Control Panel. All I have are: Ethernet, IRTalk,
Modem/Printer, and Remote Only.

- When I choose Use DHCP Sever in my TCP/IP settings for Ethernet, I
do not have the option to specify a DNS server. All I have is a box
that says Search Domains in which I could put an entry. I've been
assuming that means something like earthink.net, or
globexplorer.com, but am not sure.

- Finding the WaveLan Version 6.00.4 driver wasn't easy, and it was the
only one I ran across. Do you know where I could find a v6.3 one?

- I would love to update the OS on this machine to 8.6, as I believe
that I could use the 7.2 Orinoco driver with that OS. However, as lame
as it sounds, I haven't been able to find an 8.5 install CD locally, and
as I understand it, I need to load that first and then install 8.6 over
it. If I'm wrong there, please clarify. I don't know the Mac OS
extremely well, and I don't really know what to buy from the
descriptions I see on eBay. Alot of the CD's seem to imply that they
are restore CD's for specific types of machines.

- Thanks for the info on what to do with the hex values in the wi-fi
settings. I had no clue there.

Regards,

Roger

Hi Roger. Ok let's start with the easy questions.

OS 8.6 is available as a full install cd. No need to purchase OS 8.5 and
then upgrade. You would be better off with a Retail version of the OS 8.6
vs a machine specific version. Post a want to buy on the LEM Swap list or
check out this link to ebay.

http://computers.search.ebay.com:80/OS-8-6_Operating-Systems_W0QQbsZSearchQQcatr
efZC6QQfclZ3QQfgtpZQQfposZ23452QQfromZR2QQfsooZ1QQfsopZ1QQftrtZ1QQftrvZ1QQlopgZQ
QsacatZ80256QQsadisZ200QQsaprchiZQQsaprcloZQQsaslcZ2QQsatitleZOSQ208Q2e6QQsbrfto
gZ1QQsofocusZunknown

How much ram do you have? If you go to OS 8.6 You may need more ram than
you currently have. Also read the section on my Wireless FAQ for Known
Issues with v7.2 of the Orinoco drivers.

The AppleTalk and TCP/IP selections may have been named Ethernet instead of
Alternate Ethernet in OS 8.1, so that should not be a problem. In the
TCP/IP control panel, put those DSN numbers in the Search Domains section.
If the OS 8.1 TCP/IP has a selection that says Alternate Search Domains,
then in that one put earthlink.net

As for v6.3 of the software, their are links to it on my web site. Here is
a direct link.

http://ftp4.de.freesbie.org/pub/misc/wavelan/software/ORiNOCO/PC_Card/MacOS/

You want the file MacOS_63.bin. Use Stuffit expander to uncompress the
file. This file adds a control strip module which lets you adjust the
software settings.

I want to remind you, that I do not have a computer using OS 8.1, so
everything I say is from my old memory. If others are stilling using OS
8.1, please jump in to help.

Its important to note, that your modem software installer may have placed
something into the System file. While this is highly unlikely, if it did,
then you will need to do a clean install of the OS. The Orinoco software
does not like any modification to the System software. Sometimes it will
complete its install, but nothing will work. This is covered on my Wireless
FAQ.

The key to solving your problem is to get wireless working before adding
WEP. As I understand, you need 128bit WEP to access the network at work. It
has been my experience that getting wireless to work on a PB 1400 or any
other PB that uses card and socket services v2 is difficult. Don't worry
about that, because it's in the ROMS and you cannot update it. While
difficult, wireless can be installed on your 1400.

I am typing this to you on a PB 1400 that I have set up with wireless. I
can use either the Orinoco card or the Skyline card. I prefer the Skyline,
but it only supports 64bit WEP.

Just a note to others following this thread. It has been my experience that
the Proxima/Faralon Skyline card software v3.1 is much more mature and user
friendly than the Orinoco software. If you don't need WEP or can live with
64 bit WEP, then try the Skyline card.

Be sure to read Derek Miller's great site to see how to install wireless on
older PowerBook computer.

I hope this helps.

are for Earthlink. Your IT Adminstrator may have given you other numbers,
if so, use them.

When you want to set up the WEP Pasphrase, enter the Hexadecimal value in
the WaveLan software, with a $ (Dollar) sign in front of the Hex value. Use
the first HEX value your IT admin gave you.

Make sure you set the channel on your card, to the same channel you want to
connect to.

You may want to try to update your WaveLan software with v6.3, which ads a
control panel to assist you in setting up a connection. This control pannel
should let you see the signal you are trying to connect to.

As for testing your card, it would help if you could go to some public
wireless area, and see if you can connect to their signal with out WEP. If
a friend has a laptop with wireless, he could set up a computer to computer
connection (called Ad Hock) and you could try to connect.

You need to make sure the card and software package are working before you
work on the WEP.

As I said before, the Orinoco software seems to work better under OS 8.6. I
am sure others on this list have made it work under OS 8.1.

I hope this helps.

I hope this helps.

PB 1400, OS 8.1 and Wi-fi

2005-09-27 Thread Roger Andre
I find myself in a similar position to Spencer, and have looked at most
of the documentation that has been referred to in this thread. I'm
hoping someone can bridge the gap that exists between my understanding
of those articles, and a wi-fi connected computer.

I also have a Powerbook 1400 with OS 8.1 installed. I purchased a
Orinoco Classic Gold PC Card, Model 8410-WD-A Wi-Fi card for it and
downloaded Lucent Wavelan version 6.00.4 from
http://ftp4.de.freesbie.org/pub/misc/wavelan/software/IEEE/PC_CARD/APPLE/v600/.

After installing the Wavelan software, I see a Wavelan/IEEE pc card on
my desktop, and the Ready Light on the card turns green. I even get
some xmit activity while the machine is booting up. Aside from that
though, I have had no further luck getting setup. The card does not
show up in AppleTalk as a device that I can use for making a network
connection, but the Ethernet option does.

I have set my Appletalk control panel to Connect Via: Ethernet, and
the TCP/IP control panel to Connect Via: Ethernet as well. Aside from
that, I'm not really sure what to do next. My IT staff at work has the
following type of info listed on our support page:

OfficeWireless

SSID: XLS
128bit WEP
pasphrase: ravens
or hexadecimal: (hex value ommitted)
for dell wireless :(hex value ommitted)
-

Can someone give me a hand and explain how to:
- test that the card works
- see if I can detect any wireless networks
- setup TCP/IP to connect to something

Thanks,

Roger

PS - At this time I don't have the ability to upgrade my OS to 8.6, so
please think in terms of 8.1 control panels and network options.

Subject: PB 1400, OS 8.1 and Wi-fi

I know that the subject of Wi-fi cards has been discussed quite a bit.
Does anyone have a list of what cards do not (or DO) have drivers
available that will work with OS 8.1?

I've heard that Macwireless cards have drivers compatible, but are there
others? My understanding is that the popular Lucent/Orinoco cards
require OS 9 or higher.

Thanks,
Spence

Hi Spence. The Lucent/Orinoco will work from OS 8.1 to 9.2.2, but seem to
work best with OS 8.6 or above. To use with OS 8.1 you will need v6 and or
v6.3 of the Orinoco drivers. If you can install OS 8.6 on your PB, the use
v7.2 of the Orinoco drivers.

In addition, Faralon/Proxim Skyline work well from OS 7.5.5 and above, but
only support 64Bit WEP.

The Asante cards also have drivers for your PowerBook, but the cards are
hard to find.

My Wireless FAQ has a list of available drivers and cards which will work
on your PowerBook. Each card that I have a picture to, has been tested on
a PB 1400.

It also includes troubleshoot the problems with Wireless on a PowerBook 1400.

i too have had troubles using mem cards as VM. i'm
using a SD 128mb card. it works ok until i let my

the issue you are having w/the card is that it's
formatted. try lowering the VM to 60mb if it will let

card.

How much RAM is in your 1400? Pre-OS X VM minimally requires the amount of
physical RAM, plus the amount of virtual RAM (which is always at least 1MB),
to be free on the swap device. If you have 60+MB of RAM, then VM will require
at least 61MB be free on the card (and the 62MB figure may be only an
approximation or rounded up).

I'd suggest a larger CF card. All external drives I've ever used on a
Mac, either old or newer powerbook always shows a bit less than the rated
size. Sort of like the mac needs to use some of the space to mount it or
as overhead, if that makes any sense.

Installing OS on 1400c

2005-09-21 Thread S. Valenza

Hi, new subscriber here. I'm hoping to obtain a 1400c/117 PowerBook, and am
wondering if I will need a System Enabler to load OS 9.1, 8.1, or 7.6.1 from
a non-machine-specific Apple OS CD. (I don't have a PB-specific OS CD.) I
tried to check Apple's support archive, but the link to the document I was

Also, I'd be interested to hear thoughts on how many problems I'm likely to
have with OS 9.1 on a 117 MHz PowerBook (w/48 MB RAM installed)? Thanks!

No System Enablers went out before 7.6.1, and didn't return, and then
only briefly, in OS X (there was a short lived version of 10.2 for

stock. :)

Re: Installing OS on 1400c

2005-09-21 Thread darkwolf45
I've loaded OS 9 on my 1400c/166, with 64 mb of RAM and even with the
cache, it still chokes on OS 9. I got some better results when I
started cutting out extensions, but truth be told, OS 9 didn't work
well for this laptop until I got a G3 card installed in it. WIth the
G3 card, OS 9 sings, but I would not recomend you install it without an
upgrade card, and also some extra RAM would be of help.
If you plan on sticking stock, go with OS 8.1, or 8.6. I had a great
experience with 8.6, and even liked in some ways better than OS 9. It
ran overall more smoothly under 8.6, and 8.6 was plenty snappy as well.
It has most of the features most people want from OS 9 as well.

Subject: Installing OS on 1400c

Hi, new subscriber here. I'm hoping to obtain a 1400c/117 PowerBook,
and am
wondering if I will need a System Enabler to load OS 9.1, 8.1, or
7.6.1 from
 a non-machine-specific Apple OS CD. (I don't have a PB-specific OS
CD.) I
tried to check Apple's support archive, but the link to the document I
was

looking for didn't work (#21176).

Also, I'd be interested to hear thoughts on how many problems I'm
likely to
have with OS 9.1 on a 117 MHz PowerBook (w/48 MB RAM installed)?
Thanks!

Subject: PB 1400, OS 8.1 and Wi-fi

I know that the subject of Wi-fi cards has been discussed quite a bit.
Does anyone have a list of what cards do not (or DO) have drivers
available that will work with OS 8.1?

Hey Spence;
Here is a list I found that might or night not help. It was for OS X but
it show OS 8 and 9 plus chipsets which will tell you which ones might
work with Airport. Good Luck

Wi-fi card driver for OS 8.1?

2005-09-21 Thread Spencer Carter
Thanks for the replies about Wi-Fi and OS 8.1. It appears that the older
drivers for Lucent/Orinoco PC cards are no longer available on Proxim's
website--they only show version 7.2 which apparently requires OS 8.6 or later.

Does anyone have the older driver they could e-mail to me as an attachment to:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

I'd be grateful.

Thanks,
Spence
