I personally haven't used it, and don't ever plan to, but if you have
Windows employees/clients who are receiving spam, this may be a
solution for you. Acting as your POP3/MAPI (typo perhaps? That's what
their homepage says, unless it is refering to Microsoft Mail, in which
case where would you get spam from?) checker, it filters out spam mail
based on a custom ruleset which is constantly updated, and then passes
it to your mail client.

Configured with the ability to manually send a complaint back to the
sender, or the postmaster/abuse account there, it could serve as a
good tool for your staff, if you don't want complaints about mail
going missing because of your RBL setup.

Its not free, I haven't tried it, I don't want flames about it, I'm
not involved in any way with it, this is just an addition to past
threads about spam eradication.

Brett, this is stupid. Give the fact that in 99% of all cases (the
missing percent comprising Mac and Unix users) staff==sheep, this thing
is every admin's nightmare. Not to mention the fact that it requires
opening a hole in your firewall (ftp?) to an unknown site. No way.

qmail not receiving mails....

Hi

I am a newbie to qmail. I followed the instructions in the INSTALL file and
successfully compiled and install qmail. I can send out emails but cannot
receive any mails from outside. I checked the FAQ and could not find any
hint.

Here is the error message:

QMAILQUEUE patch - how to apply?

I am trying to install qmail-scanner, but it 
requires the QMAILQUEUE patch to be installed. I followed the link on qmail.org, 
but I found a text that looks like mail message with attachment. Can anybody 
answer how to download and install the patch?

connections incoming from localhost. It's not possible to use the "POP3
before SMTP" relay controls any more.

In some cases SMTP AUTH is helpful, but not all SMTP clients can do AUTH.

Or is there any way to use an SSL wrapper and still know which IP can

I think it's possible with tcpserver/stunnel. But I never tried it.

Nope.  With both stunnel and sslwrap you can (and should) run the target
program directly from the wrapper program.

The sslwrap documentation states:
Instead of doing a loopback IP connection as described above,
you can use the -exec option to directly execute a program. For
security reasons, I recommend using the standard inetd
configuration specified above, instead.
I queried the author about why he felt that doing loopback IP
connections was more secure than just exec'ing the program directly, and
received no response.  I know of no reason it would be more secure, and
it prevents you from doing things like relay-ctrl as well.

Am I missing something here, or will allowing relaying from localhost
solve the problem?  Assuming you want to allow relaying for anybody
allowed to establish an ssl connect to do pop, anyway.

How to change outgoing hostnames except one

Does anybody know how to force all outgoing mail to use the same domain
name, but still allow one user to choose his outgoing domain name? Putting
variables on his box is not an option. Please copy my personally, as well as

It's obviously set to not allow relaying unless you first authenticate
(which is done by checking your POP mail.) just like the error says.

I don't know that this is the most efficient way, but you should be able
to prevent all access to any file that starts with .qmail via your ftp
daemon setup.

I'm running four qmail smtp servers with a concurrencyremote of 500 each
one, to do this you need to setup these points :

1) Apply this patch at your qmail-1.03 source tree :
http://www.qmail.org/big-concurrency.patch
2) Before compiling edit conf-spawn and put "500" in the first line
3) Compile and install
4) echo "500" > /var/qmail/control/concurrencyremote

*** If you're using Linux  2.2.x (and 2.0.x I think too) :

echo 65536 > /proc/sys/fs/inode-max
echo 16384 > /proc/sys/fs/file-max

You need to do this every system reboot, I don't know how to make this cange
persistent.

Whit these steps you can get up to 500 qmail-remote proccesses at the same
time. I'm trying to get more than 500 but at the moment I can't.

I would be shocked if it actually analysed the received headers using
a local list of trusted IP address to figure out where the spam
really came from. All this does is make Joe Jobs a lot more nasty.

My advice to our users is, that if you don't want to learn how to analyse
received headers and actually take the time to do it, complaining just makes
things worse.

I assume you're talking about Bruce Guenter's QMAILQUEUE patch, which can be
found at http://www.em.ca/~bruceg/qmail-qfilter/current/ .

A 'patch' is typically a set of changes for a known release of source code.
You use a program called 'diff' to create a patchfile, and a program called
'patch' to apply them, hence the name.  Read the manpage for 'patch' on your
system, download the qmail source code, unpack it, and apply the patch.
Then compile and (re-)install qmail.

If these instructions are too terse, you are probably in over your head for
the moment.  You should probably stick to a vanilla qmail install until you
have time to do some additional research on the topic.

How to NOT RELAY messages?

I have a RedHat Linux server with Qmail 
as mail server,
and I try to configure it NOT TO RELAY 
messages,
i.e. to make it deliver messages only 
to/from addresses
in my domain.
I have used the tcp-env setting in 
hosts.allow
following the instructions in the 
qmail-FAQ
but when I try the test 
at
telnet 
mail-abuse.org
it says that it can still relay through 
my server.
Can anyone help?

You are right. wu.ftpd can restrict actions to files or directories
matching a pattern.

I am going to use it for now, but I would prefer to control all mail
relative
stuff from within qmail. I am going to experiment with qmail/users/assign
file and see what I can do.

1.  Make sure that /var/qmail/control/rcpthosts exists.
2.  Read the explanation of the test you are attempting.
3.  Read the qmail mailing list archives -- this has been discussed literally
dozens of times.

"From" addresses in yur domain is a whole different issue than "to" addresses.
Chances are that you don't want to relay just because someone says his e-mail
address is in your domain.

Can anybody tell me how can i run multiple virtual qmail servers on a
single physical server.

I m having 10 domains in my locals file and i want to run 10 different
servers. One for each domain.

Is it possible to configure it ?

This is great. Let me paraphrase:

  "qmail is overzealous when delivering lots of messages to lots to
  users. Therefore, it should be used on mailing list servers, where
  this problem is most pronounced."

Does that make *any* sense, even if you buy the premise? No. It's
exactly backward. If qmail's rapid delivery rate is a problem, the
*last* place you want it is a mailing list server where a single
message multiples into hundreds or thousands of deliveries.

I use qmail with a concurrencyremote of 500 on my list server, and in
almost five years of service I have not received a single complaint.

Is there some reason you can't make all the domains virtual? What do you mean
by "ten different servers"?

My suggestion would be to read the documentation on virtual domains, and decide

What are you trying to achieve that can't be done with one copy of

Don't see why not. Either with chroot enviroments (ideally) or qmail
compiled up 10 times with different base paths. Assuming you have 10 IP
address to bind qmail-smtpd of course.

Yes.

However, what you are trying to do is not clear.  One interpretation that comes
to mind is you want to host mail for ten domains -- in which case
virtualdomains is your friend.  Please explain exactly what you are
trying to accomplish.

I've just installed a patch, spamcontrol, and it's giving me this problem.  
I can send and receive email that are outside my domain, but can't have any of 
the servers within my domain route to the email server.  This is what i get 
when I tested it:

evidence of QMAILQUEUE patch in qmail-smtpd!". I can't figure where is the

Add the following to control/virtualdomains:

  [EMAIL PROTECTED]:thenewdawn
  [EMAIL PROTECTED]:someotherdomain

Then create ~alias/.qmail-thenewdawn-info containing:

  [EMAIL PROTECTED]

and ~alias/.qmail-someotherdomain-info containing:

Could be you're listed more than once on the envelope. Could also be
that you have a .qmail file that generates duplicates.

Make one (or probably both) of "thenewdawn.com" and "someotherdomain.com"
a virtual domain.  Read the man page for qmail-send for information about
what to put in /var/qmail/control/virtualdomains to effect this.

Running qmail 1.03 on SunOS 5.6   Had a user complaining that an important
email never arrived. Poking around in their home directory I found this  
file ...
-rw---   1 root users   12618 Oct 24 08:34 BOGUS.LtFK

looking at its contents... there are 3 emails in it. 2 addressed to the
user implicitly and another to a list he subscribed to.  

Questions:
Why weren't these messages piped to the users .mail file ?   

Is the BOGUS.* file a normal qmail operation ? and if so, what might help
to prevent this problem in the future.

Not quite.  Put the following in virtualdomains:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:infonewdawn

Then in ~alias, .qmail-infonewdawn would control mail for "[EMAIL PROTECTED]".
.qmail-infonewdawn-command would control main for "[EMAIL PROTECTED]".
.qmail-infonewdawn-default would control all other mail
for "info-" anything "@thenewdawn.com".

No, qmail doesn't generate BOGUS files by itself. Something is causing
qmail to generate it. What do the logs say?

Queuing outgoing PPP mail to multiple ISPs

Outgoing mail for a single ISP account and multiple local domains is
handled well as described in

It seems to me that this won't work for more than one ISP where the mail
to be placed in a (or each?) queue should be based on the domain part of
the From: address (the method described in the link appears to me to
work on a fall through based on the To: address by qmail-send).

Is there another means of queuing outgoing mail (preferably in a
Maildir) based on the domain part of the From: address where there are
multiple local users too?

e.g.:

mail From: [mary|fred|bob]@abc.com should be sent via isp1

and

mail From: [mary|fred|bob]@bcd.com should be sent via isp2

and should be sent separately on connection to the appropriate ISP.

All of the outgoing mail is through one qmail.  It is possible to send
all of the abc.com mail through a bcd.com ISP connection and vice versa
but that is what we'd like to avoid (header confusion).

I may be barking up the wrong tree here so let me know if that's the
case and point me in the right direction. TIA.

How do you know they weren't? All you know is that a copy showed up
in the BOGUS.* file.

No. It's entirely something specific to your site. Furthermore, it has
been created by root and, qmail does not run any user processes as
root - ever. Who has root on that system? Have you asked all those people?

Show us the logs of the delivery of those emails. You have the headers
of those mails so you can find the log framents.

Also, you need to tell us more about your qmail installation. Is it standard
or is it modified in some way? What delivery instructions are there for the
user in question?

As Dave Sill pointed out, virtauldomains can't be wildcarded quite like the
above shows.  You will need one line in virtual domains for each valid
command, e.g.

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:infonewdawn
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:infonewdawn-command1
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:infonewdawn-command2
...

The BOGUS files almost certainly came from procmail, when it discovered
that something was odd (in its opinion) with directory permissions or
some such.

Anyway, no you cannot use wildcard matching in this way, however, you 
could create an alias that handles *all* email for a given virtual 
domain as in:

thenewdawn.com:thenewdawn

Then in ~alias have

.qmail-thenewdawn-info

With the proper mail delivery directives.  Then if you wanted another, 
say [EMAIL PROTECTED] you would create

~alias/.qmail-thenewdawn-info:sales

But this is what ISP SMTP relays are _for_.  qmail will let you override
the default routing of messages based on the domain part of the destionation
address with smtproutes, but I've never seen any patches to allow what
you describe above.

The only way I can think of is to have multiple qmail installations
(/var/qmail-isp1, /var/qmail-isp2).  Have an smtproutes file for each which
directs all outgoing mail to a particular SMTP relay server.  Then have the
user use the appropriate qmail-inject (/var/qmail-isp1/bin/qmail-inject or
/var/qmail-isp2/bin/qmail-inject).

that appears in the message head for Return-Path? If so, that might be where
the problem is. I could be wrong, but I think the format for the MAIL FROM
should be the simple form of the address, without the decorative name
attached (per RFC821). Whatever you use to talk to your smtp daemon should
probably only present an address in the form [EMAIL PROTECTED] when setting
MAIL FROM as in:

MAIL FROM: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

And then, later, set the reply-to address to anything reasonable, when
you're pumping header info to the server.

That gets set by whatever program is talking to QMAIL - be it your mail
program or list server, etc.. If you wanted to try this manually you could
do (provided you had a system at mail.foobar.com) the following (lines with
* are replies from qmail (or any compliant smtp server):

What looks like is happening is that the address feild on the from
line is being used as the envelope sender address. This is not
what you want. That string is an rfc 822 encoding of an email address.
The field on the return-path header is an rfc 821 encoding of the
previous string (enclosed in angle brackets).

I didn't see a header that indicated what mail agent you are using.
However it is also possible you stuck the incorrect value into the
environment and that is getting picked up by qmail-inject.

I have a working qmail server that's been running fine for a year. It handles
over a hundred virtual domains. I have lots of .qmail-xxx files for forwarding
and delivering incoming mail to specific mailboxes and it's all been working
fine.

I'm trying to set up a filter that reads incoming mail. I wrote the filter,
tested it at the command line, then installed it in my .qmail-default file in
my home directory:

# .qmail-default
|/bin/python mailfilter.py
./Maildir/

When I send mail to myself it goes to my maildir but the filter isn't executed.
In fact NOTHING I put in the .qmail-default file is executed. I tried:

|touch /home/greg/qmail-was-here

But that didn't do anything, either.

On my server qmail is running with ./Maildir/ as the default delivery option
(from the qmail-start command). As best I can tell the .qmail-default file in
my home directory is not even looked at when delivering mail, but all of the
other .qmail-xxx-default files for the virtual domains are working.

All of the .qmail-* files in my home directory are owned by user greg and have
the same permissions: rwxr--r--.

Mail delivery is working; messages go into my Maildir just fine.

I have reloaded and restarted qmail.

My virtualdomains and rcpthosts files are correct, and my local domain is in
both files. The server routinely receives and delivers mail to local users.

Any ideas are welcome. Thanks!

i am using qmail-1.03 with qmail-ldap-patch ,  for pop authentication i
am using auth_pop ( for ldap authentication)programme which comes with a
qmail-ldap-patch,  

   i am running smtp and pop with tcpserver , 
is there any way by which i can log ip address of offending client and
the user name for all the pop3 failed Authentication requests , 

   if this is not possible then ,then its of no use because almost all ISPs
requires this basic thing  feature .

This attitude is starting to get to me, Reach. If qmail doesn't suit
your purposes, then go and buy something that does. I'm sure you will
enjoy the level of support you get from a commercial product (*cough
cough*)

On that note, have you searched the qmail archives? You'd be amazed
what is in there...

You mean limitind access based on IP numbers? This will only work
for users with fixed IPs.


To summarize:

It looks like we can't have POP3+SSL+Relay control + running in a secure way.
