Re: [QUAD-L] but at least I'm here to ask this question
Hi Glenn- I am a c5-c6 nearly 23 yrs. Post. In ’09 after having a cold and being on Mucinex I had a mucus plug in my left bronchial tubes that allowed my lung to collapse, talk about short of breath. They had to do a bronchoscopy and suck out the mucus; luckily my lung filled right back up by itself. What was bad is that I was in atrial fibrillation because my lung was pressing on my heart and I was having autonomic hyperreflexia. After my echo the cardiologist thought I had an enlarged heart condition, the echo following showed my heart just appeared that way because of the collapsed lung. I was released from the hospital the next day. My cardiologist also is an instructor and he took my echo to a class he was teaching at Mayo to show the class how a quadriplegic’s heart can appear with a collapsed lung and having autonomic hyperreflexia. The last couple of years I have gone without having any lung/upper respiratory problems until a month or so ago. I started getting a bug that went to my bronchial tubes/lungs and my doctor approached this different, NO MUCINEX and put me on Prednisone, ProAir inhaler and Z-Pak. Without having the ability to cough real well this combination seemed to have worked, I know the Mucinex flooded me. I still seem to have and have had secretions due to allergies; I take Sudugest and Loratadine for that. Best wishes! I have not been feeling good for the last few weeks and on Saturday evening after getting into bed I felt short of breath. My wife was in the kitchen, and ask if I was okay, but was able to take on much conversation. As the moments when on it was clear I needed to call an ambulance. After losing consciousness, I finally came to in the ambulance as we went to the hospital. Well, one doctor thinks pneumonia the other bronchitis. Thinking was that my airway got clogged with mucus and I could not breathe. Now, the stupid doctors have me on or medications that I can name, a nebulizer and oxygen while I sleep. I've never had any issues like this in the past, and I don't expect to have another, but then again that may change. Can anyone give me a little insight into the following: Does anyone use oxygen while they sleep? The doctor says I have sleep apnea and that I need it. My injury is C-5/6. Anybody have issues with a lot of mucus eventually shutting off your breathing? Also would like to hear what medications you are on Thanks, Glenn Henry

I have been fortunate enough to have been voiding for almost 22 years; when the bladder fills I have bladder spasms and feel the urge to void. Back in ’88 they were teaching the tap and credae method; and it was not working for me, until I started drinking beer on home visits. After several tall cans of barley-pop; I felt this strange sensation, the flood gates opened and the urine process was so forceful it blew my condom cath clean off of me. When I returned to the hospital I told my rehab doc about the beer making me void on my own; and he prescribed me 3 beers a day (my rehab doc was a marathon running non-drinker), now I just have a couple of beers every other day. I have been cathed about 5 or 6 times in over 22 years (due to a full bowel and the few bladder infections I have had), I’ve only had about three or four bladder infections So I use a condom cath (Mentor Active Cath) it is attached an MDI (1000 cc) leg bag with four button and two straps. Please join me in the celebration of 44 years post SCI. I've had a good life, doors have been opened that otherwise would never have been, I've missed out on some things but have gained others. Tomorrow may be different, each day is, but for today I feel good, no pressing problems and I thank the Lord for letting me survive yet another year. I now put my eyes on July 10, 2011, 365 days or 366 if it's a leap year, and it will take it one day at a time and some days five minutes at a time, but I'll take it anyway it comes. My goal for this year is to expand my personal mentoring to other handicapped people, and complete some of the things that God put me on this earth to accomplish. God did put me on this earth to do a certain number of things, right now I am so far behind that I will never die! Have a good one, Glenn

RE: [QUAD-L] Dizzy?
My BP has been as low as 50's/30's; I take fludricortisone (0.1mgs I think) a day, and 5Mg's of midodrine 3 to 4 times a day. I bounce all over with my BP; it is so situational, for instance, if my volume is up (lots of fluids) my pressure isn't bad, low fluids=low pressure, during my bowel routine my pressure is up, hours after the program I am super low. If I get hot my pressure is low and or dropping, cold wash cloth will snap me out of it temporarily. It happened again today while out on a walk with my dog. I just pulled up to the side of a corner store and reclined. I tried sitting up and it would come rushing back. Then I thought it was better and I’d start going again and Bang, it would hit again. I think I spent 20 minutes reclined in the parking lot. I’d almost call home, but I’d start feeling better. I felt good enough to continue, but still felt tired and light headed. I know my BP is often low, it’s been as low as 75/?, but most often it’s in the 80s or low 90s. I hate taking meds, but if it would make me less tired too. William… You might try some meds to help too. Do you wear an abdominal binder? I also wrapped my legs in ace bandages when first sitting up in rehab. You gotta stay up some. The longer you are in bed, the harder it will be to sit up. Does your chair recline? Grefg I have experienced dizzy spells every time I've gotten into my chair. This has been going on even one rehab 10 years ago. The doctors in rehab Baylor medical center, Dallas , knew that I had a problem. The rehab experience was pretty much ineffective. [QUAD-L] took a trip and didn't leave the house....
Yeah I took a trip and didn’t leave the house; I gave myself a nice hard push backwards from my living room into my den, my front wheels were caught on the threshold and down I went. I went down so damn quick that the only reaction I had was to block my knees from hitting me in the face after my head bounced off the floor. After that I had to get my right leg unstuck from between my armrest and backrest; I then had to get my chair out from under me. It became a matter of survival mode at this point; my phones were about fifteen feet away on my desk, I was home alone, it was 7:50 am and no one would be here until 2 in the afternoon. My first thought was to try and get to my phone; I realized that would be nearly impossible, so I was able to get my arm under our futon and get up on my elbows. After getting to my elbows I then worked my way to a window; I saw my neighbor come out of his garage, so I started pounding on the window and yelling, my neighbor looked around and went back into his garage. So I started thinking I need to look for something to pad my hips from the hard floor. Just as I am looking around I saw my neighbor again; I started pounding and yelling again, this time he heard me. He came over with his cell and called my nurse; she arrived, and they picked me up. And believe it or not I was down only about ten minutes! I was pretty dang lucky; no injuries or bruises, just some sore muscles today. NOW- when nobody is home; my cell will hang from the back of my chair! ~peace~ Tim c5-c6 http://whoopiekat.com/crockscrib/index.htm WhoopieKat.com

Re: [QUAD-L] 35 year anniversary
Congrats Daanoo- I am glad you are around 35 years later to share your story and life trials as a quad. Wishing you many healthy years to come! As far as the health care bill/ issue; your guess is as good as mine, time will tell. I did contact President Obama, VP Joe Biden, the governor of Iowa Chet Culver, Iowa Senators Tom Harkin and Chuck Grassley and others, in regards to my concerns on (we as the disabled community) how we may be affected. I received a letter from Chet Culver, and email from Tom Harkin. I will paste the email I received from Tom Harkin below. Tim c5-c6, coming up on 21 yrs. post http://www.whoopiekat.com/crockscrib/index.htm WhoopieKat.com Dear Tim: Thank you for taking the time to contact my office regarding issues facing the Congress. I hope you will forgive this delay in my responding to your concerns. I appreciate you taking the time to express your interest in health care reform. I am resolutely committed to enacting comprehensive health reform legislation this year, because I believe our current health care system fails too many people, and is simply unsustainable. I have always believed that access to quality, affordable health care should be a right, not a privilege. It should be a right because people’s lives, their security, and their ability to contribute to society are all undermined if they are not healthy. I also believe that access to health care coverage saves taxpayers money in the long run. Bear in mind that U.S. taxpayers spend billions of dollars annually due to overuse of emergency rooms, treatment of chronic conditions and treatment of the uninsured. In the United States, we now spend a staggering $2 trillion annually, or 16.5 percent of our Gross Domestic Product, on health care. Without reform, over the next 10 years, America will spend more than $33 trillion on health care. Yet the World Health Organization ranks U.S. health care only 37th among 191 member nations, on par with Serbia. We spend twice as much per capita on health care as European countries, but we are twice as sick with chronic disease. In spite of all this spending, nearly 50 million Americans are uninsured, including nearly 300,000 in Iowa. An even higher number of individuals go without insurance for at least part of the year, putting them at risk should an illness strike when they lack coverage. Approximately 87 million people - one in three Americans - went without health insurance for some period during 2007 and 2008, including nearly 700,000 Iowans. And even those who have insurance can find themselves financially strapped because of medical bills. Due to coverage limitations or sky-high deductibles, health insurance can be woefully inadequate for their medical needs. A recent study of bankruptcy filings found that 62% of all bankruptcies were related to medical debt, and a majority of those who filed for bankruptcy because of medical debts actually had insurance. These are just a few of the reasons why I feel so strongly that health reform legislation must be signed in to law this year. As the Senate moves forward with legislation, there are a number of principles that will guide my work. First, I believe that we should build on what works. Any individual who is satisfied with their existing coverage will be able to keep it. But at the same time, we must make health insurance work for everyone, not just the healthy and the wealthy. We must extend coverage to all, and we must make sure that insurance plans cover the basic medical needs, so people with insurance are no longer left medically or financially vulnerable. We have to bar insurers from denying coverage based on pre-existing conditions, and make sure the premiums charged are fair. To help accomplish these goals, I strongly support including a public health insurance option. Because it lacks a profit motive and because it would generally have lower administrative costs, a public option can help keep spiraling health costs down. It will ensure competition, which will keep the private plans lean and honest. And it will create a benchmark - a yardstick - that consumers can use to measure whether private plans are offering reasonable rates. It is important to note that no one would be required to enroll in the public option. I strongly believe our final health bill must provide choices for individuals. That is why any final bill will ensure that, if you like the insurance you currently have, you can keep it. But if the idea of enrolling in a plan that is administered by the government, on a non-profit basis, providing the same essential services that every private plan is required to provide, is appealing to you, you should have that option. We must also improve the quality of care we provide, and expand the use of information technology, which will not only help doctors provide better care, but will help to reduce costs. We must strengthen
Re: [QUAD-L] rc controlled boat/rc controlled anything Game Controllers
I am not aware of a hands-free remote, but I have an idea for you. Try a mounting whatever on a board; depends on your level of injury. I opened owned and ran a hobby shop 2 yrs. after my accident; and we had remote controlled car and monster truck races, we even had a pulling sled for the trucks. Anyway- being 2 yrs. post I was still trying to adapt to my quad thumbs, all ten of them haha! I started with the standard stick control on my lap; then we put the stick control on a square 1/8 inch piece of sanded plywood, and then boxed it in with thick rubber that was sticky on one side, this held the remote in place. I later had a machinist make some extensions that we put in the slots that replaced the original controller sticks. We drilled holes in some wooden balls we picked up at a craft store; screwed them into the new machined sticks, and they fit right into the palm of my hands. I will have my son run up to the attic and get my board and remote; so I can take a picture of it, if that would help you. I need that board anyway; we just got our boy some PS2 games for his b-day that I didn’t believe I could play very well, and I have one of the PS2 controllers strapped on a cutting board. Oh yeah- Tiger Woods PGA 2010 game rock’s; and I am starting to get it down, just need secure my controller a little more. I will send a pic of my latest 3 minute. MacGyverism. I will also attach a pic of my son putting the top on my (our, it's pretty much his now, he claims it) old Associated RC10 truck, this thing is so tricked out, it can also be transformed into an off-road car, flat-track or a even a winged sprint car, right now it is an off-road stadium truck. Health Care Reform is a hot topic right now and rightfully so; corruption and fraud is everywhere, including the health care system. I just want my voice heard loud and clear; FIX the broken parts, but DO NOT scrap what is working. For example: The first Medicaid waiver was given to a little girl from Iowa named Katie Beckett who lived most of the first 3 years of her life in a hospital hooked up to equipment to help her breathe. Katie could have just as easily and more cheaply been cared for in her home, but a Medicaid regulation allowed her medical expenses to be paid for only when she was hospitalized. Her mother lobbied in Washington , and President Ronald Reagan demanded that the income limit rule for Medicaid be "waived." By making this exception to the rule, Katie got home just in time to celebrate Christmas, 1981 and spend the rest of her childhood with her family. Plus, this was a huge savings for Medicaid to pay for Katie's care in the home instead of in the hospital. The Medicaid waiver programs began shortly thereafter in 1982 when President Reagan signed the Katie Beckett waiver into effect. This made Medicaid funds available to similar families with special needs children who otherwise did not qualify for assistance and care in the home. Since then, states have developed a variety of Medicaid waivers which have allowed people to receive needed services in their homes and communities rather than in an institutional setting. Programs such as the ill/handicap and elderly waivers are programs that have saved tax payer dollars rather than creating more deficit than what would be in an institution. I know that the quality of my life has been significantly better since I have been on the waiver; I am able to choose my provider, and am not forced to be a prisoner in my own home (which I was when on Medicare only) or in an institution. President Reagan freed (and saved life’s) of many physically less fortunate people, and saved tax payer dollars along the way. I am not a Republican, but Ronald Reagan sure made my life easier, happier and healthier! This great state of Iowa is doing a good job in allowing people to be cared for in the home, PLEASE do not force budget cuts that will get in the way of home care based services and waivers! Sincerely- Tim Crook (a quadriplegic since August 1988)

We (myself, my nurse and or wife) check my pressure areas in the morning (and apply bag balm) then again in the afternoon (and bag balm), and at night we do a skin check with no bag balm. I never looked at my skin before 2001 (broke my neck in' 88); but now after the wound in 2001 that turned into osteomyelitis and about killed me, checking my skin is now a common practice. Re: [QUAD-L] Hypothermia, Preasure Sores, Skin Flaps, Losing your s/o
I go from one extreme to the other with my body temp; but generally I am freezing, unless I am in the heat too long and then it takes me forever to cool off. I had a full muscle flap in'01 on my right ischium that was a result from the wound getting osteomyelitis (that nearly frickin' killed me). I spent a month in the hospital and 5 weeks off of my bottom at home; gradually getting up in my chair for short duration's until my skin could handle 8 to 10 hrs. Now these days to make sure I maintain good skin integrity, my nurse checks my skin every 6 to 7 hours (just during the day) and applies a thin layer of bag balm on the bum, then I am good to go for another 6 to 7 or even 10 to 12 hrs. if I had to. I sleep in a water-bed, and have for 20 yrs. and it has worked great, plus it is warm and toasty! Ruth I am sorry to hear of you losing spouse and the life you had; peer groups may be of some help (a place to vent), when things are bad I look around and see that it could be worse. My normal temp. all year long is 96-97 degrees. Below 96 I'm physically cold, when my temp is 99 or higher I'm too hot. I drink very weak hot decaf tea all year long [my nephrologist calls it colored water]. I am usually cold, but this last winter I just slept with a very light blanket. I wear shorts all year long to make getting dressed and undressed easier on my helpers. I wear long socks, leg warmers and a blanket on my lower half and a coat, shawl like scarf over and around my head, I make sure my ears, nose and mouth is covered when I go out in the cold. I do have issues when it gets hot. I only drink hot tea indoors. [I'm a sun person], I use a cold wet towel around the back of my neck, I constantly keep wiping my face with a cold cloth, when possible I ask whom ever is around to use a spray bottle to mist me down and I drink cold Propel water. I don't drink plain water, my Dr. has me drink Propel to help me keep from getting dehydrated and it helps keep me from getting light headed and too low blood pressure [I run low normally anyway]. I've been a quad since 10/27/1978, I was in the hospital for 3 months got sores on both on my heels, tailbone and both shoulder blades. I then went into rehab for 3 months, the sores got healed within 1/2 of the time there [hubbard tank w/ betadine added]. My 2nd sore I got was in 1983 at my tailbone [not caused by sitting], it required surgery [skin-flap no. 1] 2 weeks in hosp. back up in w/c 16-18 hrs. a day. In 2000 I got 2 p/s one under each butt check at the underwear line, the one on right side healed; the left had to be operated on [May 2001 skin-flap no. 2] 2 weeks in hosp. and I was gradually aloud up in w/c 6-10 hrs. a day [I'd push it a couple of extra hrs. on special occasions]. 2003 p/s on tailbone wound care Dr. said he could get me healed no surgery, unless the tailbone has gotten infected. MRI done [May 2003 skin-flap no. 3], but this time they removed my coccyx [tailbone] and sacrum [bone above tailbone] had to be removed, was given 2 units of blood, in the hosp. 17 days and in nursing home for 18 days. I was aloud up in w/c gradually up 20 mins a day to no longer than 8 hrs. [on special occasions maybe 1-2 hrs. longer]. 2008 I got a p/s under left butt check [again] went to wound care center from Feb. to Sept.. On Sept. 24th I had surgery [skin-flap no. 4] I was in the hosp. 5 days allowed to come home, stay in bed, get turned frequeintly [yawl right] I've been given permission to get up in my w/c 3 times a day for 1 hr. at a time [you bet ya]. I couldn't get turned as often as I should of and there wasn't anybody around to get me in and out of bed and w/c, so... I got a p/s on my right butt check close to the tailbone was, plus a small spot close to the groin area [the opening the size of a q-tip top, but it's 4cm deep]. I haven't been up in my w/c except maybe once every 10-14 days for abt. an hour since I've been home. Well to cut this a little shorter, skin-flap no. 5 and 6 is Mar. 25th. The echo I had while in the hospital showed my heart being enlarged. My recent echo showed that my heart was in real good shape; my heart appeared enlarged do to autonomic dysreflexia (AD) and the collapsed lung. Re: FW: [QUAD-L] QUAD Weight And Exercise
I have an appointment in January for a check-up and am going to get weighed then. I'm really thin and use to have quite the quad gut; but I no longer drink tons of beer everyday either, and was thin prior to my accident. Exercise abilities will differ as we as quads have various levels of injury. At my level (c5-c6) it allows me to use a 12 lb. free weight that I lay over my wrist to do elbow extensions and curls; this works my deltoids/shoulders and biceps, I have no triceps. Whatever exercise you can do at your level it's all good! [QUAD-L] Election Night....
In the wake of what has been a monumental election process; may the man that will bring America back, win! In memory of: Tim Russert; Tim was born in Buffalo, New York to Irish American Catholic parents Elizabeth (Betty), a homemaker, and Timothy Joseph Big Russ Russert, a sanitation worker and newspaper truck driver,[3][4] who were married for 30 years and separated in 1976.[5] He was the second of four children; his sisters are Betty Ann (B.A.), Kathleen (Kathy) and Patricia (Trish).[5] He received a Jesuit education[6] from Canisius High School in Buffalo. He received his B.A. in 1972 from John Carroll University and a Juris Doctor with honors from the Cleveland-Marshall College of Law in 1976.[3] Russert commented on Meet the Press that he went to Woodstock, in a Buffalo Bills jersey with a case of beer. While in law school, an official from his alma mater, John Carroll University, called Russert to ask if he could book some concerts for the school as he had done while a student. He agreed, but said he would need to be paid because he was running out of money to pay for law school. One concert that Russert booked was headlined by a then-unknown singer, Bruce Springsteen, who charged $2,500 for the concert appearance. Russert told this story to Jay Leno when he was a guest on the The Tonight Show on NBC on June 6, 2006.[7] Career Prior to becoming host of Meet the Press, Russert worked as a special counsel, and later as chief of staff, to Democratic U.S. Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan. In 1983 he became the counsel to Democratic Governor Mario Cuomo of New York State. He was hired by NBC News' Washington bureau the following year and became bureau chief by 1989. Host of Meet the Press Russert assumed the job of host of the Sunday morning program Meet the Press in 1991, and would become the longest serving host of the program. Its name was changed to Meet the Press with Tim Russert, and, at his suggestion, went to an hour-long format in 1992. The show also shifted to a greater focus on in-depth interviews with high profile guests, where Russert was known especially for his extensive preparatory research. One approach he developed was to find old quotes or video clips that were inconsistent with guests' more recent statements, present them on-air to his guests and then ask them to clarify their positions. With Russert as host the show became increasingly popular, receiving more than 4 million viewers per week, and was recognized as one of the most important sources of political news. Time'' named Russert one of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2008, and Russert often moderated political campaign debates.[8] Political coverage and debates During NBC's coverage of the 2000 presidential election, Russert calculated possible electoral college outcomes using a white marker board (now in the Smithsonian Institution) on the air and memorably summed up the outcome as dependent upon Florida, Florida, Florida.[9] TV Guide described the scene as one of the 100 greatest moments in TV history.[10] Russert again accurately predicted the final battleground of the presidential elections of 2004: Ohio, Ohio, Ohio. On the MSNBC show Tucker, Russert predicted the battleground states of the 2008 presidential election would be New Mexico, Colorado, Arizona and Nevada, saying, If Democrats can win three of those four, they can lose Ohio and Florida, and win the presidency.[11] Red states and Blue states According to The Washington Post, the terms Red states and blue states were coined by Tim Russert.[12][13] This term refers to those states of the United States of America whose residents predominantly vote for the Republican Party or Democratic Party presidential candidates, respectively. It began to emerge in mainstream political discussion following the 2000 presidential election. I appreciated every time Tim spoke in behalf of, and for the people of this Great Nation! I miss him dearly, especially this election season. Tim had a way of bringing a perspective to election results (and commentary) to the people; he could break down like no one else. This message is to help pay tribute to Tim Russert on Election Night. Help by forwarding this link to everyone that had a love for Tim Russert’s hard work, dedication, and love of Country! Hey all- let your political side speak out, on our new tribute to Tim Russert site. Hopefully now I can catch up on some post's, I have been all caught up on designing this site. We recently designed a non-profit tribute site for the late Tim Russert. I felt a great loss when Tim Russert passed away this last June; he was a man (I always looked up to) who always brought politicians back to reality, especially during their time on Meet the Press. Tim did not care about what side of the aisle they were from; he did care about how they served the people, and he greatly cared about the people of this Great Country. I hope you enjoy the site, and express your political rants/views on the blog. www.tippinonetotim.info Tim C; c5-c6, 20 yrs. post WhoopieKat.com

Hey guys- I am cleaning house and getting rid of wheelchairs and things I no longer need; since tomorrow is my 20th anniversary and I am oh so tired of it, I am giving up on this quad shit (done with It) ahahahaha I WISH. Seriously- I thought I would allow my quad friends dibs on this stuff I no longer want or need. First item is a NEW still in the box HP Roho Quadtro Select (16X16) cushion. Second item is a 16X16 Quickie 2 manual wheelchair in some what new condition. Third item is an Invacare Power 9000 electric chair (18wX16d); I cruised Oahu in this chair and it rocks, it needs front casters, a battery and maybe a fuse. Fourth item is a Action Arrow Series electric chair (16X16) (I acquired this chair with the purchase of my new/used van), it has a Jay back with an attached adjustable headrest, the previous owner said one of the motors needs brushes, it appears to be in real good condition. Misc stuff up for grabs is; front casters for manual chairs, a couple of sliding/transfer boards. I think that is it? So if this stuff interests any of you, just shoot me an email and we can chat about prices, like I said I am cleaning house- so this stuff is priced to sell! Now I sound like some used car salesman. Anyway- after nearly 20 years I get measured for a new chair right, come to find out, I have been in a chair/chairs for someone much shorter than myself. I am now in a 16X18 Invacare X4- man, what a sweet ride. Re: [QUAD-L] serious health questions
Very good point- low volume and electrolytes will definitely lower your BP. I tend to have low volume; due to what I believe is because of my poor paralyzed bowel. I drink at least one half gallon of water daily; which also flushes electrolytes out, so I periodically drink Gatorade Tiger which has more electrolytes than regular Gatorade. One matter of fact is; people who are thin tend to run a lower BP than heavier people. Orthostatic hypotension is what I am diagnosed with. Good luck Lil'! Re: [QUAD-L] serious health questions
Hey Lil'- Long time no hear from. I have been going through the same thing (except the UTI's, I did have a bad one a couple of months ago, it was only my second UTI in almost 20 yrs) and am now on midodrine also. I am feeling better until the midodrine wears off after 3 hours. My blood pressure has always been low; but I have had alot more lows with near passing out with always feeling tired and light-headed. My lab work came back good, and so did my adrenal gland test. I am and always have been lean, but I am wondering if the atrophy I have had has something to do with it.? Kind of sounds like we are in the same boat, as I recall you are just a lil'-thing... haha! How much midodrine are you taking? Now going for the next milestone ... 50 years! I have a great life. Yes, it has it's ups and downs - like spending 2 1/2 months in a nursing home healing a pressure sore or gaining way too much weight and not being able to shed it, or living in cold, cold, cold NY State (well not cold this week). My husband and I celebrated 30 year together last year - even though he came out to me after 26 years of marriage ... THAT was a surprise!! He is still my best friend. I have my sons, my grandchildren, my miniature horses and my 3 Labs (17 puppies at the moment!!) and my friends. Life is good. I celebrate life! Well, sorry to make this short but sweet, so much has happened over the years I could go on on . But, I have a horse show tomorrow so have to get to bed. My parting words were written by someone else, but they fit so well: Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a well preserved body, But rather to slide in sideways, Chocolate in one hand, Strawberries in the other, a body worn out, used up and screaming as loudly as possible,'Woo Hoo, What a ride'!!! Re: [QUAD-L] dizzy spells
Hi and welcome- I have been on the list since about '93, and have been a c5-c6 quad for 20 yrs. next month. My question is- what is your blood pressure running? I do (like many) suffer from orthostatic hypotension (upright position/ low blood pressure) due to paralysis. Due to my muscle loss in the lower extremities; I have been suffering from more low bp's over the last year or so. I have gone through a battery of tests to eliminate health related (other than SCI) possibilities. I had my adrenal glands tested and they were fine, my blood work was good. My doctor put me on Midodrine, and I am feeling like the energizer bunny. I have more energy, no episodes of vertigo or dizzy spells. Diet and digestion can play a role in your bp like Mark (I believe) mentioned. I have many posts to catch up on, I just really haven't had the energy and time to post. Here is a link to check out on orthostatic hypotension--- http://www.icord.org/scire/pdf/SCIRE_CH16.pdf Good Luck! I am a 49 yr. old C 3-4 quad. I can not move anything below my shoulders but I am not on a vent. I am going on my 24th year. The past 2 to 2 1/2 years I have been having dizzy spells to where if I don't tilt back in my w/c I will pass completely out. It happens after I eat a meal. I have been to different Dr.'s about this and the only thing they can tell me is that my blood is going into my digestion system. The only problem is it doesn't happen every time I eat. Has anyone ever heard of a problem like this? I also have scoliosis bad. My spine curves bad right in between my shoulders. Could this have anything to do with it? Any reply would be helpful.
