As far as I remember there was only the unofficial post in this forum
(which might not have been authorised by Logitech management):
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?96188-New-Squeezebox-Radio&p=714295&viewfull=1#post714295

And officially there was just the the UE Smart Radio announcement:
http://forums.logitech.com/t5/Squeezebox-Players/Logitech-UE-Smart-Radio/td-p/884530

And a bit later they also officially posted the open letter to
Squeezebox fans:
http://blog.logitech.com/2012/09/28/an-open-letter-to-squeezebox-fans

However, if they have removed the UE Smart Radio devices from the stores
it's pretty official in my mind, I can remember any time they have done
that in the past where it hasn't meant that they were about to stop
selling the product officially. Just face it, these kind of decisions is
not something Logitech are good at communicating with there customers,
they probably want to be sure someone still buys the UE Smart Radio
devices they have left in the stores. In theory it could also mean that
they are about to announce a UE Smart Radio 2, but personally I doubt
that's the case.

It will be interesting to see how they will handle uesmartradio.com.
Since they still have devices under warranty, I would suspect that they
need to keep something running, but theoretically they can just
downgrade all UE Smart Radio users to Squeezebox Radio and make them use
mysqueezebox.com instead and avoid the need to run two set of central
servers. Of course, doing that would be kind of admitting that the whole
UE Smart Radio product was a mistake and I wonder if the management
really is prepared to do that.

You can also just get it from git:
https://raw.github.com/Logitech/squeezeplay/public/10.0/src/squeezeplay_baby/share/applets/SetupWallpaper/wallpaper/bb_blue_en.png

However, I suspect you also need to change icons and other stuff for it
to look the same as UE Smart Radio, just switching the background is
probably not enough. It should all be in the 10.0 branch in git, but
it's probably a bit of work to patch all other stuff since different
parts are stored in different places of the git source code tree.

If you ignore Logitech's license (which doesn't allow you to distribute
artwork), it would probably be possible for someone to do a patch for
Patch Installer applet that switches the skin to the UE version. It
might be easiest to do as you suggest and get the files from a
temporarily upgraded UE Smart Radio and just copy the files from:
/usr/share/jive/applets/QVGAlandscapeSkin
/usr/share/jive/applets/QVGAbaseSkin/

The instructions how to make a Patch Installer package is found on the
wiki:
http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/Patch_Installer_applet

Logitech generally don't comment their plans on future products.

It's really great that they made it possible to convert UE Smart Radio
to Squeezebox, but I personally don't think you should read too much out
of it regarding possible future products.

Time will tell if they are working on something new, but if they do, I
doubt they are going to release something that means that they need to
maintain and support two platforms. They probably want to try to get rid
of one or both of the existing platforms, this is the only alternative
that makes sense from an economical perspective as it will likely
decrease their maintenance and support costs significantly.

The link is only needed during the upgrade process, it will disappear
automatically when you do the factory reset in the last step.

The reason for the symbolic link is that the UE Smart Radio firmware
will look for firmware at uesmartradio.com (where it will find UE Smart
Radio firmware) and the symbolic link will make it take the firmware
from the local file instead of downloading it from uesmartradio.com.

When the device have Squeezebox firmware it will look for firmware at
mysqueezebox.com servers and this will make it find Squeezebox firmware,
not UE Smart Radio firmware, as long as you haven't selected on
mysqueezebox.com web site that it should be "upgraded" to a UE Smart
Radio.

You will be able to continue use it for local music, internet radio and
some of the online services if you have LMS installed on a computer,
Raspberry Pi or other similar device. Some of the online services are
going to stop working when Logitech shut down mysqueezebox.com, but
that's unlikely to happen intentionally while they still have devices
under warranty. However, it can still happen by accident since most of
the people with the right knowledge has been laid off recently so if it
breaks they might not have the necessary people to fix the problems.

Future will tell if there will be an alternative solution after Logitech
shuts down mysqueezebox.com.
I'm not that worried for Radio and Touch since they can be loaded with
custom firmware, the problem is bigger for the older devices (Boom,
Transporter, Classic, Receiver) but they will still continue to work for
local music as long as LMS works.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Changing background color on clock screensaver

2013-02-18 Thread erland

You can do it with the Screen Switcher and Custom Clock third party
applets.
With Custom Clock applet you can through Custom Clock Helper plugin in
LMS customize a clock screen with a certain color on the background.
With Screen Switcher applet you can configure which screen saver that
should be active during certain periods.

You can apply for a free 30 day evaluation license to both of them
through License Manager plugin or directly through
http://license.isaksson.info and try them out to ensure they work as you
like before you make the purchase. For the license validation to work
you need to install License Manager plugin/applet both in LMS and
directly on the Radio.

Yes, the people on this forum is no longer the ones Logitech want to
sell UE Smart Radio to. We are music enthusiasts and that's no longer
Logitech's main target.

You can probably get used ones on eBay and similar sites, but I
understand your frustration, we all feel more or less exactly the same.

However, if you aren't in a urgent need, I would just wait, I'm sure
some company eventually decides to take advantage of the market segment
Logitech no longer is interested in. Developing new products will take a
bit of time, so for any company that started to develop new products
just after Logitech stopped selling Squeezebox it's likely going to take
at least another 6-12 months before the products are ready to be
released on the market.

UE Smart Radio isn't designed for people like you, as you have already
noticed, it's not even designed for people who listen to premium online
streaming services. IMHO, the control interface is designed for people
who listen to 10-20 different internet radio stations and these people
don't care much about the audio quality and most of them doesn't have an
amplifier in their living room so A and B is the same and C is what they
are searching a replacement for, so it's really only D that's missing
but I'm honestly not sure these users even want D and if they do they
just use their smart phone (if they have one). So as long as 2B is a
"yes" in your example Logitech has successfully provided what their
target user for UE Smart Radio is interested in. The question is just
how big the 2B user category is, even if most of us doesn't think there
are a lot of users who are only interested in 2B it might be bigger than
we think among the masses, it wouldn't surprise me if the most common
Squeezebox user today owns a single Squeezebox Radio.

So I think it's important to realize that UE Smart Radio isn't a
Squeezebox and it will never be a Squeezebox (unless you manually
downgrade it to Squeezebox firmware), it's an internet radio device with
some premium features. Unfortunately the current price is not set
according to an internet radio, it's set for a Squeezebox kind of
device, which probably means that there are currently a limited amount
of people who really loves it. I suspect the users who only needs
something for the 2B category really is looking for devices at $99 and
below.

IMHO, Logitech's smartphone app doesn't really help for library
management, it's useless if you have more than 50 albums because it's
missing the possibility to scroll to an artist/album starting with a
specific letter. At the moment you need the iPengUE app if you want to
get some kind of overview of the local music library. The same
limitation also applies to online music by the way, while searching
works it's almost impossible to browse a big online collection in
Spotify or Deezer using Logitech's app. It's pretty clear to me that the
Logitech's smartphone app is optimized for playing music through
predefined favorites and for this it works great as long as you only
have 10-20 favorites.

You didn't overreact, I just didn't understand that you were talking
about the computer based control interface.

If the UE Smart Radio becomes a success, I'm pretty sure someone
(Logitech or third party) eventually will create a computer based
browsing interface if there is a lot of users requesting this. The only
issue is that there isn't any documentation regarding the API's, but
pippin has obviously been able to do it on the iPad/iPhone with iPengUE
so I'm fairly sure it would be possible for someone to do the same on a
computer.

For me personally, I have a lot more need for the computer based
browsing interface on my Touch, on the Radio's I rarely use a computer
and often not even an iPhone/iPad to control them. I think the reason
for this is where the Radio devices are placed (Bedroom/Kitchen) and the
fact that I often just want to listen to a favorite on the Radio's while
I do more browse oriented listening mainly on the Touch which is placed
in the main listening room where I'm often sitting with an iPad or
laptop in front of me.

This is the downgrade procedure I followed when I did it previously:
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?96256-Upgrade-SB-Radio-to-UE-Radio&p=725956#post725956

As you can see in the last point you should in the player settings page
on mysqueezebox.com have an option to cancel the UE Smart Radio upgrade.
Possibly it might require you to connect to mysqueezebox.com first, so
try entering one of the My Apps menus and see the option appears after
that, also try to restart the Squeezebox Radio, I'm not sure it appeared
directly after the factory reset or if I had to restart it a second time
before the cancel option appeared on mysqueezebox.com.

Didn't the UE Music Library appear on the menu on the UE Smart
Radio/iPhone/Android device so you could browse it and stream music in
similar way as you did on the Squeezebox Radio ?
That's how it's supposed to work.
There is now way to browse the library using a computer, the computer
based browsing interface has been dropped for the UE Smart Radio
products.

If you want similar browsing experience to a Squeezebox and have an
iPad/iPhone, I strongly recommend getting the third party iPengUE app,
you will never go back to the Logitech apps after that if you have a
need to browse and play music from a local library. The Logitech apps
works great for people that only have a need to listen to 10-20 favorite
radio stations available in one of the internet radio services supported
by Logitech, but for more advanced browsing you really need something
like iPengUE to make it useful.

I would strongly recommend you to try to do the upgrade through
mysqueezebox.com, it's a lot easier and a lot less risk of doing
something wrong if you aren't familiar with Linux.

Have you tried a different web browser/computer ?
Have you tried to do it while the Squeezebox Radio is connected to
mysqueezebox.com by going into one of the "My Apps" menus first ? (I
don't think this is needed, but I don't remember for sure)
Have you tried to call Logitech support, I'm sure they are very willing
to help you with this as they want people to be able to upgrade to the
UE products.

(The symlink is the "ln -s" command.)

At the moment I can only see two reasons:
1. A simple user who mainly use the Squeezebox to listen to internet
radio and think it's confusing to have all the other functionality the
Squeezebox provides.
or
2. A user who want to try and see what the UE Smart Radio product really
looks like and works.

Here it is:

But it should work to do it through www.mysqueezebox.com, if you don't
see the text and "Learn more" button in the "Update to UE Smart Radio"

What does Settings/Advanced/Diagnostics/Wireless Info display ?
If it displays "Not Connected" it means that you have problem with the
wireless network between the Radio and the router.
In that case, are you saying that it switches to connected when you
start the LMS PC ?

Does it connect to the wireless network if you goto
Settings/Advanced/Networking/Choose Network and select the wifi network
?

Honestly, I can't say I'll miss these two particular apps very much,
always felt like a marketing trick to get more users by being able to
put a Facebook/Twitter compatible sticker on the box. Still, based on
that, it's a bit strange that they chose to remove them in the UE Smart
Radio which they even try to advertise through their Facebook channel.

My feeling is that 7.7.2 is the best release since 7.5.5, at least as
long as you disable image/video scanning.
7.7.2 have some advantages and some disadvantages compared to 7.5.5, so
it depends on how you use it if 7.5.5 or 7.7.2 works best.

The only definitive answer I know is the stuff I posted in the following
post earlier in the thread (which refers to board revision 7):
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?97331-Downgrade-UE-Smart-Radio-to-Squeeze-OS&p=727744&viewfull=1#post727744

Plus what pippin mentioned based on his experience of people purchasing
a Radio earlier this year who tried older firmware versions.

If hardware is changed, it's not that strange that older firmware
versions won't work.

If it's a Radio purchased this year it likely have the same issues as UE
Smart Radio.
If it's an older Radio it should work to just connect it to an older
Squeezebox Server version and if that doesn't work the manual downgrade
procedure should work.

Check the hardware revision by login via ssh and run: cat /proc/cpuinfo
The hardware revision is listed at the end, something like this:
Hardware: Logitech MX25 Baby Board
Revision: 0005

If Revision is 0007 the Radio will likely only work with 7.7 firmware,
but if it's 0005 or lower you should be able to downgrade it manually.
If manual downgrade directly to 7.5.5 doesn't work, you can try to do it
in steps, you will find the firmware files here:
http://update.mysqueezebox.com/update/firmware/

As I've understood the UE Smart Radio is unlikely to work with any
Squeezebox firmware prior to 7.7, so I'm afraid you probably have to
upgrade your server to be able to use the downgraded UE Smart Radio with

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Upgrade SB Radio to UE Radio

2012-12-05 Thread erland

The downgrade procedure to "downgrade" an "upgraded" Squeezebox Radio is
now posted in public by Logitech for those who want a clear official
instruction:
http://forums.logitech.com/t5/Logitech-UE/Squeezebox-radio-upgrade/m-p/931642#M442
I still suspect this will only work as long as you don't keep running
the UE Smart Radio long enough for Logitech to publish a new firmware
update, since it only reverts to the previous firmware, but I guess you
should be pretty unlucky if that happens during the short time you need
to try out the UE Smart Radio firmware to see if it's something you
like.

Feels like this could be related.
In that case it means that you need 7.7.2 or later firmware if you like
to "downgrade" a UE Smart Radio to a Squeezebox.

The command
Code:

cat /proc/cpuinfo

on my Radios's lists two rows at the end of the output saying:

Code:

Hardware : Logitech MX25 Baby Board
  Revision : 0005

If anyone have a UE Smart Radio is willing to try to run cat
/proc/cpuinfo and see what Revision it reports we can confirm it.
If it says 7, that's probably a fairly strong indication that the above
mentioned firmware changes is needed to make the firmware work properly,
which means you need 7.7.2 or later firmware.

Ok, that at least indicates that the kernel is the same both for UE
Smart Radio and for an upgraded Squeezebox Radio.

If I on my upgraded run
Code:

cat /etc/squeezeos.version

It reports
Code:

  10.0.1 r16963
  r...@ec2mbubld01.idc.logitech.com Thu Nov 8 09:33:51 PST 2012
  Base build revision: b4b03b7fc83610c2bcd43bd71a8461768cfd2519

Is this also the same on yours ?
If that part also is exactly the same, it's indication that not just the
kernel but the whole lower level operating system is the same.

Some other things to compare are:

Code:

cat /proc/bus/input/devices

Which on mine gives:

Code:

  I: Bus=0019 Vendor= Product= Version=
  N: Name="mxckpd"
  P: Phys=
  S: Sysfs=/class/input/input0
  U: Uniq=
  H: Handlers=kbd event0
  B: EV=3
  B: KEY=8000 38 4000 240 4001 f800 1

  I: Bus=0019 Vendor= Product= Version=
  N: Name="front panel"
  P: Phys=
  S: Sysfs=/class/input/input1
  U: Uniq=
  H: Handlers=kbd event1
  B: EV=3
  B: KEY=120400 0 0 0

  I: Bus= Vendor= Product= Version=
  N: Name="msp430"
  P: Phys=
  S: Sysfs=/class/input/input2
  U: Uniq=
  H: Handlers=event2
  B: EV=35
  B: REL=300
  B: MSC=8
  B: SW=2

And
Code:

cat /proc/modules

Which gives:

Code:

  ar6000 142684 0 - Live 0xbf00

And
Code:

cat /proc/devices

Which gives:

Code:

  Character devices:
  1 mem
  4 /dev/vc/0
  4 tty
  5 /dev/tty
  5 /dev/console
  5 /dev/ptmx
  7 vcs
  10 misc
  13 input
  14 sound
  29 fb
  90 mtd
  116 alsa
  128 ptm
  136 pts
  207 ttymxc
  252 imx_adc
  253 ubi0
  254 rtc

  Block devices:
  1 ramdisk
  7 loop
  31 mtdblock

In the end, the more similarities there are, the bigger chance that a
manual downgrade might work.
But the first UE Smart Radio customer who tries to downgrade to
Squeezebox firmware is always going to take a risk as long as we can't a
confirmation from someone from Logitech.

Except for the date, the uname -a reports the same on my Squeezebox
running Squeezebox firmware and on the Squeezebox which have been
upgraded UE Smart Radio firmware.
Squeezebox Radio with Squeezebox firmware:

Code:

Linux SqueezeboxRadio 2.6.26.8-rt16 #1 PREEMPT RT Mon Sep 12 21:59:07 MDT
2011 armv5tejl GNU/Linux

Squeezebox Radio with UE Smart Radio firmware:

Code:

Linux SqueezeboxRadio 2.6.26.8-rt16 #1 PREEMPT RT Tue Sep 25 12:42:18 PDT
2012 armv5tejl GNU/Linux

If someone with real UE Smart Radio have enabled the Developer menu and
SSH access according to this, try logging in with ssh and see what uname
-a reports:
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?96256-Upgrade-SB-Radio-to-UE-Radio&p=715317&viewfull=1#post715317

I believe the firmware upgrade logic in UE Smart Radio firmware allows
Logitech to feed individual devices with different firmware, so it's
possible that the kernel in a real UE Smart Radio is different than the
one in an "upgraded" Squeezebox Radio.

Or if you want to set it to something custom and not the /etc/hostname

Basically create a /root/.profile file which contains the same command
you run from the command prompt.

Or at least nobody has dared to try the manual method described here:
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?96256-Upgrade-SB-Radio-to-UE-Radio&p=725564&viewfull=1#post725564

The issue is that the hardware is a little different in the UE Smart
Radio, so loading Squeezebox firmware on it might work, but if it
doesn't work you risk turning the device into a brick where it won't
start anymore and you can basically not use it. So only try this if it
doesn't matter if your UE Smart Radio completely breaks.

You can use it with a music library on a computer, but you won't be able
to use it with a music library on a USB drive/SD card inserted into the
Squeezebox Touch.
Unfortuantely there aren't even any official distribution from Logitech
of UE Music Library server for NAS boxes, so you basically need a
Windows or Mac computer to get an officially supported version. However,
UE Music Library works on Linux if you install it from git (from the
public/10.0 branch:
https://github.com/Logitech/slimserver/tree/public/10.0), but to do this
you need to know a bit of Linux and git.

If you are trying to install Custom Clock on a Touch and have a USB
drive connected to the Touch, it's also worth to temporary try to
shutdown the Touch, disconnect the USB drive, start the Touch and see if
it works after that. This will ensure that the built-in server in the
Touch doesn't cause any problems.

can see.
I guess you will just have to make sure you add the favorites for the
most important stuff first so they appear at the top.
If you discover something interesting later, you can always delete all
favorites and re-add them in the correct order afterwards. Yes, I know
it's silly, but that's the way we have to handle it at the moment.

Generally it sounds like you are the perfect UE Smart Radio user, I
believe the UE Smart Radio is focused on people who mostly listen to
internet radio.
I guess Logitech just removed the web interface for management of
favorites and when they did this they didn't realize that they also lost
the reordering functionality, hopefully this will be corrected in a
future version of the firmware, smart phone app or uesmartradio.com web
site.

there is a link at the top of this web page. Logitech employees doesn't
read this community forum.

If you want to try to do it yourself, the following process worked for
me:
1. Turn off the Squeezebox
2. Hold the << (REW) button on the Squeezebox while powering it on (not
the "right arrow" button, the "rewind" button)
3. The Squeezebox now starts with the previous firmware, but you need to
do the following steps to make it stick that way.
4. Select to make a software update in Settings/Advanced/Software Update
menu (Might be easier way to do this, but I've found that a software
update will make the firmware stick the next time your restart the
device)
5. After the software update, do a factory reset in
Settings/Advanced/Restore Factory Settings menu
6. Goto mysqueezebox.com and select ot cancel the UE Smart Radio update
on the player settings page

This process only works as long as you haven't upgraded the UE Smart
Radio firmware after you first upgraded to UE Smart Radio, the reason
for this is that the operation in point 2 reverts to the previous
firmware and if the previous firmware is UE Smart Radio the following
steps in the process will obviously not work. If point 2 doesn't work,
it's best that you contact Logitech support. There is a manual way to do
it through SSH and editing a text file with the Linux vi text editor,
but I can only recommend that for people who is familiar both with ssh
and vi.

I tried this a bit.

Holding << immediately after selecting Factory reset menu doesn't help.

However, turn it off and then hold << while power it on will revert the
firmware to the previously installed version. As long as you haven't
upgraded the UE Smart Radio firmare after you initially switched to it,
this will return it to the Squeezebox firmware. After returning to
Squeezebox firmware a reboot will turn it back to UE Smart Radio, so
while it's using Squeezebox firmware you need to do something to make it
stick. I did a firmware upgrade to the same version already installed
and that made it stick when I rebooted it next time, I guess there is
probably some hidden keyboard command to make it stick without having to
do a firmware upgrade.

On mysqueezebox.com it works like this.
- When you have selected to upgarde to UE Smart Radio a new menu will
appear on the Squeezebox which you need to select to upgrade.
- After upgrading there is no way to access any settings on
mysqueezebox.com.
- If you rollback the firmware as described above, to turn it into a
Squeezebox, you can access its setting on mysqueezebox.com again (after
a factory reset) and cancel the upgrade to UE Smart Radio and this will
also make the "Upgrade to UE Smart Radio" menu item disappear from the
Squeezebox screen again.

So to sum it up, the << operation will work for now, but if you stay on
UE Smart Radio for a while so Logitech publish a new firmware version
which you upgrade to, I believe you will have to use the manual method
to get back to Squeezebox firmware. I can confirm that the manual method
works, just tried it in my own setup.

Hopefully Logitech realize that a geeky solution like the above won't
work for normal users and soon publish a better solution for people that
regret the UE Smart Radio "upgrade".

Does the mysqueezebox.com connection work ?
Can you try to temporarily browse into something in the "My Apps" menu
?
I'm just asking because I know some people had issues some time ago when
mysqueezebox.com was unavailable.

Also, if you are looking the the server.log in SBS, are there any errors
? You will find it through the SBS Settings/Advanced/Logging web page.

1. Do you have Custom Clock Helper plugin installed in SBS ?
2. Have you changed anything in SBS recently ? Or anything in the Touch

3. Are you running the licensed version of Custom Clock ? If you do, do
you have License Manager applet installed ? Does the

If you are, try to browse to the "My Music" menu first so the player
connects to LMS/SBS and then goto Custom Clock menu after this.

For anyone that wants to upgrade, remember that the upgrade is easy but
if you later regret the decision I don't think there is an easy way to
go back.

To revert to Squeezebox Radio firmware if you have selected to upgrade
to UE Smart Radio firmware you have to activate the development menu and
use a SSH client as described previously in this thread. However, I've
no idea if this even works when doing the official upgrade, because if
you have selected to upgrade the official way your Radio might be marked
on mysqueezebox.com as one that should be upgraded, so there is a risk
it will upgrade to UE Smart Radio again immediately after you have
downgraded it. If someone has decided to permanently upgrade to UE Smart
Radio, or if anyone from Logitech still reads this thread, it would be
great to get a confirmation if the manual downgrade still works after
you have used the upgrade button now available on mysqueezebox.com.
Hopefully you can still do it by removing the device on
mysqueezebox.com, but it would be great to get this confirmed if someone
is willing to try it.

I would try if it gets enabled if you turn off the UE Smart Radio device

Generally, IMHO, the biggest disadvantages with the new UE Smart Radio
platform is:
- No support for third party plugins or applets
- You can't plan any music if you internet connection is down or
unstable
- There are currently no players without built-in speakers which will
make it hard to build a good whole house audio system with it
- The current version of the Logitech iPhone app is basically useless if
you have a bit larger library, it's faster but it's missing critical
functionality such as a possibility to navigate to artist/albums
starting with a certain letter, in a library with 2000 albums you
basically need to scroll through 2000 albums to reach the end and be
able to play the album starting with letter Z.
- Generally a lot less functionality and parts of the software still
feels like it's in a beta state.

The only advantages with the new UE Smart Radio platform is:
- It's a bit more likely that Logitech will actively support it, at
least if a lot of users buy it
- No need to switch between different servers, the system will talk to
the correct server automatically
- Generally a lot less functionality, which can make it easier to use
for people who just want a very simple device to play internet radio and
have a small or no local music library

Since the Squeezebox Radio and UE Smart Radio hardware is basically the
same, I would currently recommend people to get the Squeezebox Radio if
you want to get one of these devices as it makes it possible for you to
use the old way and later upgrade to the UE Smart Radio experience when
you have seen that Logitech is committed to make the UE Smart Radio a
success.

Sounds like the UE Music Library beta for Vortexbox is based on the very
unofficial version which still supports Squeezebox devices, at this time
we don't know if Logitech will distribute or maintain this version of UE
Music Library, it's definitely not available through their
uesmartradio.com or mysqueezebox.com pages and I don't think it's even
available as nightly builds for Windows.

The official UE Music Library version doesn't ask for mysqueezebox.com
account at installation and doesn't allow easy installation of third
party plugins as the "Plugins" tab is disabled and doesn't exist in the
settings page, it also doesn't support Squeezebox devices.

I'm not sure if the unofficial version uses mysqueezebox.com or
uesmartradio.com or both as backend, if it asks you for a
mysqueezebox.com account at installation I suspect it uses
mysqueezebox.com as backend for Squeezebox devices which means that it
isn't any more future proof than LMS 7.x is.

I think they have started to ship the UE Smart Radio, at least in some

For the foreseeable future you will be able to continue using it the
same way you do today, the only difference it that you can't purchase an
additional new Squeezebox Touch and it's unlikely to get support for any
new streaming services.
http://forums.logitech.com/t5/Squeezebox-Players/Logitech-UE-Smart-Radio/td-p/884530

The issues only occurs when Logitech eventually decides to shutdown
mysqueezebox.com, but this is unlikely to happen anytime soon as they
will get in trouble if they shut it down while they still have devices
within warranty period. After mysqueezebox.com is shutdown, it might be
problematic to use it for some online services, internet radio will
likely work if you have setup all channels you listen to as favorites
and are using a computer with the LMS software installed.

Chwarg wrote:

One of the Logitech developers said that it won't officially be
possible, probably because a number of reasons:
- It doesn't make sense for Logitech to officially offer a downgrade
path as they want people to use the UE products not get stuck with
Squeezebox products
- I think there are some small hardware differences between the
Squeezebox Radio and the UE Smart Radio and this could probably result
in that the Squeezebox Radio firmware isn't working properly with the UE
Smart Radio.

I think it's better that we try to convince Logitech to add back the
missing stuff to the UE products so we dare to switch and maybe even can
convince them to also offer and upgrade path for the Touch.

One of the most important things for them to add back is to support
installation of third party plugins/applets, as this will make it
possible for third party developers to add back the stuff Logitech don't
want to add themselves. I started thread about this in the official UE
support forum, so if people agree, please post your thoughts in the
following thread:

Everything is possible, but at the moment the main problem is that they
don't allow us to easily install third party applets/plugins:
http://forums.logitech.com/t5/Logitech-UE/Open-UE-Smart-Radio-for-third-party-plugins-applets/td-p/894572

It's still possible to run third party stuff, but it gets a bit too
complicated for normal users to install it at the moment.

Reading between the lines in their announcement I think it's fairly
clear, they have offered us an "upgrade" path for the Squeezebox Radio
but I don't think we should expect Logitech to make the other
Squeezeboxes work in the UE system. The Squeezebox Touch could probably
be patched by third parties to make it work in the UE system, but before
doing that I'd like to wait a bit and see if Logitech really is planning
to invest resources in the UE Smart Radio system, it's not worth doing
if they don't plan to invest more development resources on the UE stuff
than what they have done on the Squeezebox during last 1-2 years. The
Classic/Boom/Transporter/Duet is unlikely to ever work in the UE system,
I think they have to little memory to make it realistic, they couldn't
even fit all the codecs they wanted in the firmware if I remember
correctly.

If you are just talking about synchronization between two UE devices
without dependency to the cloud server, I think we are likely going to
see something like that if Logitech and ISP's can't make it reliable
with the cloud server at uesmartradio.com.

This is of course just a software limitation so if it causes a lot

They have recently added possibility to play 100 random tracks within
selected genres, so there is a function for this, it's just that you
have to ask it load up another 100 tracks manually after 6-7 hours or so
when the first 100 have finished playing, but I expect this is good

I'm fairly sure that the number of users regularly reading this forum is

visit this forum regularly, so forum members posting their thoughts here

Hopefully Logitech will open it up to third parties so we don't have to
go that route to be able to enhance it, at the moment I feel we should

It depends, officially it doesn't work.

Unofficially, if you run it from source code from the 10.0 branch and
start it with the slimserver.pl instead of ueml.pl, it seems to work at
least partly to play music from it both using a Squeezebox and a UE
Smart Radio. Just note that this is likely a startup mode which Logitech
never officially will support, but it's currently available if running
from source. I'm not sure how the Windows exe installation works, I'm
guessing it only offers you to start in the UEML mode.

Of course, even if starting UE Music Library server this way it doesn't
mean that the players can act together, there is no remote control of UE
Smart Radio available using traditional Squeezebox remote control apps
and you can't control it through the web interface, so in in reality,
it's more like a way to use a single server software for two completely
separate player systems. It could possibly be an alternative if your
computer doesn't have enough horse power to run both LMS and UE Music
Library but otherwise you will probably be better of running a LMS
instance and UE Music Library instance on the same computer.

If you have a local playlist file which contains url's that points to
your local web service it will probably work also on the UE Smart

How do you play it today with SBS/LMS ? Is it through a playlist or do
you use the "Tune in URL" functionality which I don't think exists on UE

One of the Logitech developers indicated that they would probably not
spend any time to ensure that SB Radio firmware would work with UE Smart
Radio hardware, if you want a SB Radio it's better to get SB Radio
hardware now while it still is available in some stores or on eBay and
similar sites. That being said, he didn't explicitly say that SB Radio
firmware wouldn't work with UE Smart Radio hardware, but I believe there
are some small hardware differences so there would probably at least be
some small issues. I don't expect Logitech to provide any official way
to switch a UE Smart Radio to SB Radio firmware, they likely want us to
go forward, not backward.

Logitech at the moment as far as I've seen. It's possible to view it on
the UE Smart Radio display but I'm not using the UE Smart Radio on
device controls when building a playlist, way to hard to search and
browse through a big library or streaming service using those. Also,
after you have built the playlist, there is no way to save it, neither
on the UE Smart Radio directly nor through the iPhone app. Hopefully
this is something they are working on but I didn't get that feeling
based on the answers I got in the Beta section of the forum yesterday.

So playlist management current takes a big step back IMHO.

But I agree that it's a positive sign that they read your blog, the
reason they noticed it is likely either because you tweeted it to
@LogitechUE or because you posted a link in the Squeezebox Facebook
group, which both could cause it to be seen by potential new UE Smart
Radio users.

As I've understood most Squeezebox users only get a single device, users
in your situation with no new rooms to put another Squeezebox in might
be common in this community but it's very rare when looking at the
complete Squeezebox user base. Also, the general public are moving
towards premium streaming services and most premium streaming services
doesn't work with software based players like iPhone/Android because
Logitech blocks them from mysqueezebox.com. I think even Triode's
Spotify plugin is blocking some software players because Spotify doesn't
allow him stream the content to unknown devices, only to real
Squeezeboxes.

There are only distribution packages for Windows and OSX available on
uesmartradio.com but you can still get linux versions from
http://downloads.slimdevices.com/UEMusicLibrary_v10.0.0/unsupported/

Officially it's not supported, which likely means that Logitech won't
test it as much as they test Windows and OSX, in worst case this
eventually means that it will stop working. It's probably a bigger
chance that it will continue working if this community embrace the UE
Smart Radio solution and help testing it and reports when something
breaks on Linux, the question is just how interested we are in doing
that as long as it doesn't provide the features we want.

As far as I know I've never registered my age nor my sex at
uesmartradio.com, so I can't see how they could know that you are a
middle age man or that the person using the Radio is the same as the
person who have registered on uesmartradio.com. But they could see what
people using their UE Smart Radio in Sweden is most interested in
listening to.

What's more interesting is services like:
- Most popular artists this month
- Most popular new album this month
- Top listened songs in Sweden this month
- Your favorite songs
- Top listened songs in Sweden which you have access to either in your
local library or through streaming services you subscribe to
- Songs you haven't listen to for a long time
- Other users in your region which like similar songs as you

Basically what LastFM and similar sites provide and also similar to what
TrackStat provides but with the possibility to both look at your own
statistics and statistics for people in your region. The problem is that
at the moment it sounds like Logitech don't plan to do anything like
this, they just plan to scrobble to LastFM and rely on LastFM to offer
any features, which results in that the statistics is restricted to
LastFM subcribers and countries where LastFM streaming is available. The
result is that it doesn't become any better than what we currently have
and then it's not justified to collect statistics like this. If they
want me to send them statistics I prefer that they use it to offer
interesting features and not just pass it to third parties.

I suspect the reason they do this is that they want to avoid the bother
the user with "server" and let him just choose content without having to
know which server that's providing it.
This feature is great and something I've always wanted and it makes the
system easier to use for non technical users.

However, generally I agree with you that the chosen solution is not a
good way to implement it, but it was probably the easiest way to
implement it if they wanted to base it on the source code from the
Squeezebox and LMS. If it had been done the proper way, the UE Smart
Radio would likely not be based on Squeezebox/LMS software at all, and
this would definitely hurt existing Squeezebox users as Squeezebox/LMS
maintenance would be completely ignored. With the chosen solution we can
at least get some benefits since it's fairly easy for Logitech to
backport changes for UE Smart Radio/UE Music Library to
Squeezebox/LMS.

An advantage with the chosen solution is that the reliability of
uesmartradio.com needs to be a lot better than mysqueezebox.com
reliability has been before, because now it's needed for playback of
local music and for that it's unacceptable that it's suddenly is gone an
hour in the middle of a party. It's annoying if it happens today when
listening to some streaming service but it will be extremely annoying if
it happens for a UE Smart Radio users as they can't use their device at
all if uesmartradio.com goes down. However, I'm sure Logitech will
provide a solution for this in a future firmware release if/when they
realize they can't ensure the reliability of all ISP's and
uesmartradio.com.

As already linked by Michael (and me previously in some thread):
http://www.uesmartradio.com/public/privacy

It's as clear as any other privacy statement I've seen.

We might look at this as a problem, but it could also be the thing that
differentiate UE Smart Radio from other products if Logitech would
actually start using this data to create mixes, smart playlists, charts
and similar thing that would enhance the music listening experience.
Unfortunately it didn't sound like this is something they plan to do
from a previous reply from Michael, but who knows what will happen in
the future, maybe they realize the value of this information and really
start to use it as they say in their privacy statement: "We use the
information you and your product provide to us in order to provide the
Smart Radio service to you and enhance and improve it for you and other
users, to provide content recommendations, ...", which could result in
something similar to what Apple does with their Genius concept.

I generally recommend people to enjoy their Squeezebox at the moment, it
works as great today as it did 2 weeks ago and it will continue to work
great for at least the next year, so there is no reason to panic and
switch to something else already now, it's better to wait and see what

Actually, that's more or less exactly what I would like, I like to have
the metadata of my collection on uesr.com, at least the metadata for the
tracks I've played last 6 months or something similar. With this data
you should be able to do a lot of creative, exciting features which
really would make the word "smart" in UE Smart Radio to mean something.
Take a look at what Apple does with its genius technology and what
LastFM/Pandora does. You would probably not even have to handle the data
yourself, you could just get a commercial agreement with LastFM and let
them store the data if you prefer that, they already have API's for it
and so does EchoNest, you just have to pay them a bit for a commercial
agreement.

Yes, I realize I'm dreaming a bit, I don't really think something like
this will happen because nobody at Logitech understands it, but
something like this would give UE Smart Radio a competitive edge
compared to all other products on the market in similar price range. It
would also be a feature which would be a reason for me to move on to UE
Smart Radio products if you also start to produce variants that suits
other rooms than the kitchen and bedroom.

Some people are of course going to be concerned regarding privacy, so an
option like this would have to be possible to enable/disable, else you
would get a lot of critique. However, your current terms of use
agreement on uesr.com would allow you to do things like this as far as I
can see.

However, to be realistic, I suspect you are right, Logitech will
continue to primarily focus on doing basic integration with as many
streaming services as possible without really caring much about features
that would enhance the music listening experience, it has been this way
for the last 3-4 years and even if I would like this to change I don't
really expect it to.

Is the performance of long playlists improved in UEML / UE Smart Radio
?
The poor performance with long playlists was one of the main reasons why
Random Mix and the Dynamic Playlist based plugins had to use the dynamic
approach.

My Playlist Generator plugin is based on the static approach but its
performance got really bad with LMS/Squeezebox when the playlists
started to contain a few hundred or a few thousand tracks depending on
your hardware.

How large playlists are uesmartradio.com able to handle ? or is the
restriction in the firmware of the UE Smart Radio in the new solution ?

Not necessarily, it depends on your interpretation of the world "radio",
they could introduce "UE Smart Radio for HiFi", it's just that when they

I bet there are more people that use Squeezeboxes for online music than
people with huge local libraries, so this dependency has really existed
also with the traditional Squeezebox solution for most Squeezebox users.
If we only look at people in this community, which likely is less than
1% of all Squeezebox users, it might be more important that the system
works without an Internet connection, but I suspect most people in the
community also is listening to online music now and then, it's just that
it isn't the main use case, but it still needs to work reliably.

Internet is here to stay and most people have an internet connection
that are getting better and better so it's becoming less of a problem
compared to 5-10 years ago. I generally agree that it would be good to
be able to play local music without an internet connection but if they
manage to get uesmartradio.com more reliable than mysqueezebox.com it
might not be a big issue.

didjean wrote:
>

Maybe they have made shuffle work properly with large playlists, in this
case the Random Mix plugin doesn't provide much as you can just select
to play a genre and shuffle the playlist. Yes I know Random Mix provides
possibility to include multiple genres, but I suspect most people just
want to select a single genre and play random content from it and this
will work as long as the system is able to handle reasonably large
playlists.

It could also be that they wanted to release the hardware already now
even if they won't be finished with their Logitech UE Smart Radio Mix
functionality until later, but this is just speculation, I honestly
don't really think they are working on any smart mix functionality, but
who knows, they must have selected the name "smart" for some reason...

What's the alternative, if you switch to another system you are probably
not going to be able to sync the players of that system with your old
Squeezeboxes. I agree that it's bad that they don't support synching
with old players but it's not a reason to choose another manufacturer
instead of Logitech because you will end up in the same situation with
another manufacturer as they also won't support synching with
Squeezeboxes. This is of course only the case of the solutions that
exist today, we don't know yet if someone will release something that
fills the hole Logitech have left by shutting down Squeezeboxes.

This community represents a tiny part of all Squeezebox users.

Also, when searching on Google for Squeezebox this forum ends on the
first page of the results, when searching for UE Smart Radio this forum
is not anywhere near the the top. So I think it's unlikely that this
community will drive any sales, neither directly nor indirectly through
recommendations in the near future. If Logitech want the sales of UE
Smart Radio to increase quickly they need to find other places to
advertise it than through this forum and its members. This might also be
something they are aware of and might be a reason why we have seen so
little about Squeezebox and this community in the official

It's fairly likely that it will happen during os upgrades, it's just a
matter of time, but Logitech have unofficially said that they plan to
maintain LMS and ensure it works with the OS upgrades at least in the
near future. When Logitech permanently decide to shutdown LMS
maintenance and mysqueezebox.com we need to find an alternative
solution, either a community based LMS or something else, but let's
worry about that when we get closer to it, it's unlikely to happen
during the next 12 months IMHO, so if there isn't an alternative in
beginning of 2014 I'll start to worry.

I think it's less likely that an windows update upgrade should break
anything, but it could happen.

autopilot wrote:

For local music it is safer, if it would work, but for most people it
just doesn't work good enough, too slow and unreliable to use in a
production environment. Also, I believe one of its issue is
compatibility with hard drives, so even if it would work you could end
up in a situation where your hard drive crashes and you need to get a
new one but there no longer is one on the market that is compatible with
the Touch.

Any Linux based computer can be as safe as a Touch with the advantage
that you will get good performance and a reliable environment with it.
If you can't install one yourself there is always VortexBox Appliance
hardware which comes with LMS preinstalled or the VortexBox operating
system which can be fairly easily installed on any normal computer which
you can dedicate for LMS only.

I'm pretty sure nobody knows, not even people inside Logitech, they
don't plan several years ahead for these kind of details.

The initial setup which requires mysqueezebox.com registration after a
factory reset can be fixed, don't worry about that part.
I also know that it is possible for third parties to load custom
firmware or third party applets on the Touch and Radio making them less
dependent on mysqueezebox.com.

They have a privacy policy, it's as clear as the ones I've seen from
other companies, so the statement what they collect and what they use it
for is pretty clear to me:
http://uesmartradio.com/public/privacy

But I agree that the UE Smart Radio gets more private information and
I'm not sure you have any option to select to not allow them to collect
it.
Information that's sent to the usmartradio.com service which they don't
collect is not a big issue, the issue is the information they collect
and use.

Of course, if we ever want smart playlists, the new ussmartradio.com now
have the possibility to store playback history and in similar way as
Apple do with their Genius solution offer smart mixes/playlists based on
what you and other people in your region or with similar taste listens
to. I'm pretty sure this won't happen because it requires a bigger
software development effort than I think Logitech is able to handle, but
the possibility is there, so this doesn't have to be all bad.

Also means that it will be a lot harder for them to shut it down and it
needs to have better reliability than mysqueezebox.com, so this can also
be an advantage depending how you look at it.

mysqueezebox.com can be shutdown because you can still use your
Squeezebox for local music and they can argue that they shut it down
because it's no longer compatible with the streaming services it
integrates due to the streaming services making changes in their API's.
They would of course still have a hard time doing it while there are
devices within warranty period, but they could probably do it when the
warranty has expired and be able to defend it.

uesmartradio.com would be a lot harder to shutdown because it would make
it impossible to use the device at all, they could of course just make
sure to distribute new firmware that doesn't depend on uesmartradio.com
first and then shut it down, but it would be harder for them to defend.
They have a clause in the terms and condition which allows them to
shutdown streaming services and file format support but as far as I can
see they don't have anything similar that allows them to discontinue
support for local playback.

Online music will continue to work as long as Logitech keeps
mysqueezebox.com running and at the moment it sounds like they don't

they have unofficially said that they plan to continue maintaining LMS

but that should be at least 2 years in the future so there is plenty of
time for the community to find alternative solutions before this
happens. So regarding online music, let's start to worry again 2014 if
there still isn't an alternative.

10 years is a very long time, my Squeezebox Classic is now 6.5 years and
still working excellently and there is no indication that Logitech plans
to break it anytime soon.
The Squeezebox Classic is older than most other music related equipment
I have in my home, I think it's only the Sherwood amplifier that's a
little bit older.

Just because Logitech stops selling Squeezeboxes doesn't mean that
existing Squeezeboxes will stop working, people from Logitech has
already indicated that they plan to keep mysqueezebox.com running, they
will probably shut it down eventually but it's unlikely to happen in the
near future IMHO.

If you with cloud service mean internet radio or online streaming
services I can agree that it might be dangerous, if you mean
mysqueezebox.com I disagree.

If the software isn't maintained it doesn't matter if it runs on the
device, on one of your computers or on a central computer managed by
Logitech, you have the same problem in all cases, if the software isn't
updated with changes made by the content source (radio station,
streaming service) it doesn't matter where it's installed, it won't work
in any of the cases. I would even go as far as saying that it's more
likely that something that breaks on a central cloud server will be
fixed quickly than if it's something installed on a device/computer in
your home.

The uesmartradio.com web site only contains downloads for Windows and

Isn't the LMS/SBS packages for QNAP distributed by QNAP ?
In that case you should probably ask QNAP instead of here, but
generally, it is possible to run UE Music Library server which is used
for UE Smart Radio on a Linux machine, so I'm guessing this means that
it would be possible for QNAP to create a package and redistribute it as
long as they get the necessary permissions from Logitech. At the moment
it doesn't look like QNAP provides a UE Music Library package, but I
guess we need to give them more than two days to do this, they probably
didn't know about the UE Smart Radio any earlier than we did.

Confirmed, a Squeezebox Radio will remain a Squeezebox Radio until you
explicitly choose to convert it to a UE Smart Radio, there is no risk

I'll re-post this even though I've posted similar in other places, but
I'm a bit afraid that people won't read through this long thread and it
might be missed, sorry for the re-post for those of you that have
already read my previous posts.

First of all let's not panic yet.

I can't go into any further details at the moment but I want to remind
everyone that even though we might love the Logitech software we also
really love the Squeezebox hardware, the Squeezebox hardware is very
open and with custom/patched firmware it's possible to use it without
the need for a Logitech maintained software/firmware at all.

I do realize we need something that isn't dependent on Logitech
hardware/software on longer terms but on short terms the Logitech
software/hardware will continue to work great and there are solutions
for people that need additional hardware players:
- With Apple iPhone/iPod Touch:
-- iPeng on an iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad (even have audiophile support with
the right docking station and latest iPeng version)
-- SqueezePad on an iPad
- With Android based hardware:
-- SqueezePlayer on an Android devices
- With a Vortexbox Appliance, which as previously mentioned isn't just a
server, it's can also be a Squeezebox player.

Also remember that due to their open solutions it's a not that unlikely
that your Squeezebox hardware and the above hardware devices will be
reusable in another system, a Sonos hardware would on the other hand
very likely only be usable in a Sonos system so going out and buy a
Sonos already now would make you even more stuck than you already is.
Sonos might turn out to be the best option in the end, but in my opinion
it's too early assume that yet.

Your Squeezebox system worked great August 28'th, it's working great
today and it's also very likely going to work great 6-12 months in the
future. On longer terms you might need something else but it's not
urgent, so I suggest you wait and see a bit what happens during next
6-12 months before starting to switch to a competing closed or more
limited system.

I personally don't have any plans to abandon or replace my Squeezebox
hardware at the moment.

I agree and it would surprise me if they shutdown mysqueezebox.com as
long as significant amounts of Squeezeboxes are still under warranty
period, doing that would result in a lot of warranty returns and that
would likely cost them quite a bit. For the Radio they can probably say
to users that they need to "upgrade" to UE Smart Radio firmware as a
solution to avoid warranty returns, but as Michael mentioned earlier in
the thread this won't currently work for the Touch so due to this it's
probably likely that they will try to keep mysqueezebox.com running at
least for the next couple of years.

Except for this I would also advice anyone still thinking of selling
their SB hardware to wait a bit. Using SB hardware with patched or
custom firmware is possible and this opens up some possibilities to
reuse the hardware with completely different firmware which doesn't rely
on mysqueezebox.com at all, but I don't want to say anything more
regarding this at the moment.

Two questions Michael:
1. If "downgrading" a SB Radio to UE Smart Radio firmware, will it be
possible to "upgrade" it back to SB Radio firmware or is it a one way

2. If it's a two way route, is there any chance it will also be possible

I think they should be synced automatically, but I'm not sure if it
maybe depends on how the "mysqueezebox.com Integration" parameter is set
in "LMS Settings/mysqueezebox.com page".

I'm just asking, because if you use TrackStat, Custom Browse, Multi

configuration/data files for these which you need to ensure you have

In my setup I found the issue to be short network problems, which can
happen if you are connected via Wifi. The issue is that this will
trigger the fallback alarm even if the disconnection only happens
temporary during a second. During normal playback this is never an
issue because then the playback buffer handles the issue and there are
plenty of audio data in the buffer so the network problems aren't
noticed.

For some unknown reason Logitech decided to make the alarm code
extremely sensitive to network issues, it's very frustrating when it
happens, would be so much better if it only triggered the fallback
alarm if the network isn't able to recover after 2 minutes or something
similar. Not sure what they were thinking, it's not like I'm going to
fall a sleep during 2 minutes and don't wake up if there is a 2 minute
silence before the fallback alarm triggers.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] For how long does Logitech guarantee to maintain mysqueezebox.com

2012-02-07 Thread erland

Let's not worry about mysqueezebox.com end of life before there at least
are some kind of indication that Logitech plans to shut it down.

At the moment, as far as I know, there is no indications that Logitech
plans to shutdown mysqueezebox.com, quite the opposite actually, they
are scaling it up to be able to handle future load:
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?p=686760#post686760

Why would they scale up mysqueezebox.com if they planned to shut it
down ?
Why would they scale up mysqueezebox.com if they planned to terminate
Squeezebox development ?

There is no reason to worry at all at the moment, maybe it was a few
months back but certainly not now.

If mysqueezebox.com would be shut down, there would at least be issues
with:
- Premium streaming services
- Users who don't like a computer to be powered on while listening to
music
- Artwork on online content on Radio/Touch/Controller (mysqueezebox.com
is used for artwork rescaling of online content)
- Automatic firmware updates

For people that only use the system to play local music via LMS/SBS on
a computer, it would more or less continue to work as it does today.

I'm not sure if a factory reset on Radio/Touch/Controller works without
mysqueezebox.com, I know it connects to mysqueezebox.com during the
initial setup.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Video streaming

I think theoretically it could be possible on the Touch if someone
developed the necessary software, there actually were some hacking
during the hardware beta where low res YouTube were tested by some
third party developer on a Squeezebox Touch.

For the Radio I think the CPU and memory is too limited, I once tried
an animated image on the Radio, it barely worked on the Touch but it
made the Radio reboot because of high CPU/memory usage.

However, I'm fairly sure Logitech won't try to do video on neither
Radio or Touch, if they want a device with video they are going to make
that with some new hardware that's able to handle it properly.

The main issue for me is not to trigger the alarm initially, usually is
starts to play the server music, then after a while sometimes something
happens that makes the Radio temporarily loose network connection, and
that triggers the fallback alarm and it never returns to the server
alarm any more.

I'd love if anyone would take some time to provide a patch that
completely disabled the fallback when temporarily loosing the
connection with the server.

I don't think so, because usually it's just a short disruption and the
player audio buffer is able to handle it and it's able reconnect before
the buffer runs out of audio data. The issue is that the alarm code by
design interpret a disconnection as if the server can't be trusted and
the fallback alarm in the player takes over even if it only disconnects
for a second.

I would personally like the alarm to be able to handle short
disruptions on the network but Logitech has decided that this shouldn't
be allowed as there is a risk the alarm will silence and not wake you
up. I guess the alarm is designed to just be a wake-up alarm and not a
player that plays music for 30 minutes when you already is woken.

At the moment I don't have much need for a plugin like this myself. I

Looks like it looses connection with the server for some reason, that
will always trigger the fallback alarm.

I think I've also seen it happen more often since I upgraded to 7.7.

In most of the cases it's written in lua but you also have the
possibility to develop native applets which are compiled for the
Squeezebox hardware and then you can in theory use any language you
want but I guess C/C++ is the preferred one as all the API's are
available for that.

See here for more information:
http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/SqueezePlay_Applet_Developing_Guide

Also, this is only applicable to Touch, Radio and Controller, the older
devices (Boom/Classic/Transporter/Receiver) do not support locally
installed applets.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Plug a microphone?

2011-11-30 Thread erland

The Touch actually have a built-in microphone, I've tried it by logging
in via ssh but unfortunately the quality was not too good:
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=88427

Would probably be possible to use for sending messages but not likely
for karaoke as that probably only works with a real external
microphone. Still, it's not likely something Logitech will spend any
resources to develop further so anything related to this probably have
to be provided through a third party applet.

I'm not trying to argue about the price, but it is about the same price
as one burger meal per year...

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Anyone else feel like suing?

2011-08-08 Thread erland

I'll just refer you to the old thread with the same ridiculous theme:
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=82804

Just call Logitech support if your device doesn't work as advertised,
they are their to help you get it to work or offer you a refund if they
can't get it to work as advertised.

I'm in the same situation as the majority of all users on this forum,
all my Squeezeboxes works reasonably good, even with the 7.6 release:

It wasn't before but it is a bit different in the version I released

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Multi Library on SBR?

2011-08-05 Thread erland

Does the folders you have specify contain any spaces ?
If not, could you specify the exact path you have specified i the Multi
Library configuration which doesn't work ?

There is a bug related to spaces and I plan to release that later today
but if possible I'd like to know if there is some other character that's
causing problem for you.
