Yeah, and it's even funnier that the "mumbo jumbo" begins with the phrase "For the sake of clarity, " TKIP was intended as a replacement protocol for WEP, but they are both easily cracked, and have been superseded by WPA2. -- aubuti aubuti's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2074 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=92817 ___ Radio mailing list Radio@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/radio

Well, I'll just answer that with a big "I have no clue" cuz that mumbo jumbo in the WiKi is way beyond my abilities to discern or understand what the heck they are talking about. :) There was no mention of "shared" in my router settings so I presume it was not shared. If I get a chance over the weekend, then I might try it, but I'm sort of losing interest now I have a working solution. I also understand that the security is all rather flimsy. My view is that the more things I put in the way (hidden SSID, WEP encryption, MAC filtering) just make it a little bit harder to get in unless you're determined. Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Radio vs Squeezebox v1 WiFi Settings
I have now worked around the incompatibility by creating two virtual networks on my access point. One using WEP for my older squeezeboxen and another using WPA2-PSK for the Radio and all my other devices. However, I do think that there is a compatibility issue in the WiFi requirements between SB v1 and the Radio. I suspect it's a bug or a limitation that few people will notice - probably not very many have both devices on the same wireless network and those that do probably have access points (like my old one) that supported open and shared modes simultaneously. It would be interesting to get confirmation on whether the Radio works for anyone else with the WEP encryption in pure shared mode. If it works for others then it might be a limitation in my access point (although I probably don't care very much any more). Further points: My SSID are all unique and hidden, so accidental connection is probably unlikely even without encryption. I don't have MAC filtering on yet, but will probably add it over the weekend, at least for the WEP network just to add a little bit of complexity. The Radio and at least one SB1 are in locations that aren't practical either for wired or powerline connections. If I think about it carefully, I can probably shuffle the players around so that all the SB1/1.5 are on wired connections (either ethernet or powerline) but it would mean convincing my son to swap his Classic for an SB1.5. Not sure this is going to happen. -- Mark.Bennett Mark.Bennett's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=763 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=92817 ___ Radio mailing list Radio@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/radio
Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Radio vs Squeezebox v1 WiFi Settings
There is no "accident" with neighbors connecting to your network if your network name (SSID) is unique. I agree with both chill & aubuti, assuming your WEP issue cannot be resolved ... To keep the casual "accidental" user off of your router just use MAC filtering, it's about the same level of security as is WEP. Both WEP and MAC filtering are easily defeated with freeware programs all over the hacking sites. -- toby10 toby10's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12553 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=92817 ___ Radio mailing list Radio@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/radio

Mark.Bennett;681985 Wrote: > Can anyone confirm my findings that WiFi connections on the Squeezebox > Radio are incompatible with those for the Squeezebox v1/v1.5? I can't confirm or reject that, as the only models I don't have are the SliMP3, v1, and v1.5. However I can say that they _should_ be compatible. There are other users on the forum who don't seem to be having your problem, but I don't know offhand if they are using wifi or wired. Also, I erred in saying that it would have to be the v1 and v1.5 that would be wired. Of course, you could do it the other way around, and wire the Radio but keep the older models running on WEP wifi. But I suppose the Radio probably isn't in a good location for that, either. Finally, if your neighbors include adolescent kids, don't assume they are easily confused when it comes to hacking -- aubuti aubuti's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2074 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=92817 ___ Radio mailing list Radio@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/radio

Yes, this is essentially what I have now done, one network with WEP just for the squeezeboxe v1/v1.5 and another with WPA2-PSK for the Radio. chill;681991 Wrote: > Failing that (bearing in mind I haven't tried to confirm your findings > yet) you could always add another cheap wifi access point just for your > early Squeezeboxes. I can add MAC filtering, but haven't got round to that yet - maybe tomorrow once I have migrated other devices to the new network. (Although this is hackable too for anyone who knows what they are doing.) It's still annoying that the two devices appear to have incompatible network settings. -- Mark.Bennett Mark.Bennett's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=763 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=92817 ___ Radio mailing list Radio@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/radio
Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Radio vs Squeezebox v1 WiFi Settings
Mark Does your router/access point offer the option of a 'guest network'. The idea behind them is, I think, to allow you to give a password to your visitors without giving them access to your main network, and you can sometimes configure whether devices on this guest network are allowed to see the rest of your network hardware. This might be one way to create a different wifi zone with different security settings. Failing that (bearing in mind I haven't tried to confirm your findings yet) you could always add another cheap wifi access point just for your early Squeezeboxes. You could probably add MAC address filtering to that zone, so that only those Squeezeboxes can attach, and then use better password protection on the other (main) zone. -- chill chill's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10839 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=92817 ___ Radio mailing list Radio@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/radio

Hmm, it might be easy to hack for anyone who is computer literate, but would completely confuse our neighbours and prevent them stealing my limited internet bandwidth (albeit accidentally). Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Radio vs Squeezebox v1 WiFi Settings
Sorry if these are too obvious (ie, things you have already considered and discarded as not suitable for your needs), but two simple-but-guaranteed options are: 1) wire your SB1 and 1.5. If you can't pull ethernet cable easily in your location, consider homeplugs, which run ethernet over your power lines. 2) turn off the WEP encryption. WEP is trivial to hack, so it's only protecting you from the most casual of snoopers. -- aubuti aubuti's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2074 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=92817 ___ Radio mailing list Radio@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/radio
[SlimDevices: Radio] Radio vs Squeezebox v1 WiFi Settings
I have a mixed setup of Squeezeboxen from v1, v1.5, v2, v3 and since Christmas, a Radio. My WiFi is setup using 128-bit WEP encryption using a shared key, since this is the best that is supported by the Squeezebox v1 and v1.5. However, the Squeezebox Radio won't connect to a network with this encryption setup. It will connect with exactly the same settings but using open key instead of shared key. This means that I can either have my Radio connected, or my 3 v1/v1.5 Squeezeboxes, but not all at the same time. My Squeezebox v2 seems to connect quite happily with either setting. (I haven't my v3/Classic but I suspect it is the same as the v2.) My access point doesn't support both shared and open at the same time - only one or the other. How can I connect both my legacy squeezebox v1/v1/5 and my Squeezebox Radio at the same time? -- Mark.Bennett Mark.Bennett's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=763 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=92817 ___ Radio mailing list Radio@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/radio
