[RBW] MIPS helmets

2013-05-07 Thread Mojo
This is a cross post from IBOB. We don't talk about helmets much here at
RBW Bunch because we are civil and don't like to get into shouting matches.
A quick search of the archives shows no discussion of this new
MIPS technology, so maybe it's new for you.

Except for styling, helmets haven't changed much since the 1990s. This new
MIPS (multi-directional impact protection system) technology is the first
helmet to claim to help minimize concussions at the more common impact
angle of 30-45 degrees. "On impact, the helmet rotates independent of the
MIPS liner, absorbing some rotational acceleration." Read about it here
(apologies to all for a link to Buycycling rag):
*
http://www.brucebarcott.com/2013/05/your-bike-helmet-doesnt-do-what-you-think-it-does-heres-why-.html
*

REI has one for sale: *
http://www.rei.com/product/831581/poc-trabec-race-mips-bike-helmet*

At $200, its pricey. It differs in a few other ways. It also has greater
coverage down the back of the helmet. And it is meant for multiple impacts.
Personally I don't dislike the styling, without the aero-fin on most road
helmets, and I never bought into the mtn vs road helmet difference anyway.
I am going to try it and can report back to the group after a few weeks of
riding.

[RBW] Re: Riv Suggestion Box: San Marcos

2013-05-07 Thread Garth
It's amazing to me how a "label", influences how I feel about a given
product. I personally prefer no labels on a bicycle if given a choice.
When I had my Bombadil repainted, I had it done without labels. I know the
origin of the frame, the frame knows the origin of the frame, and Rivendell
knows the origin of the frame.

I remember being enamored with stickers as a child. Getting some STP
stickers from the Service Station (back when gas stations were owned and
run by the same one or two people and actually offered "real car service")
was a grand thing ! Getting the "big brand" named stickers and products
was THE thing, to be associated them. It's all psychological of course,
and it's alright. I call it today "permission slips" anything that
allows you to feel better about yourself within the realms of your belief
system, is a permission slip.

Re: [RBW] Re: Riv Suggestion Box: San Marcos

2013-05-07 Thread Bruce Herbitter
I hear ya. Since no bike frames are actually fabricated at Walnut Creek,
you could think of your bike as a Panasonic, or a Toyo, or a Waterford, or
a Maxway, or a Curt, or a Joe or a Mark, etc. They all share a designer and
basic principles though, the same ones shared by the San Marcos. So "label"
it in your mind as you like, but enjoy the ride regardless.

Speaking of actual labels, when I repainted a Road two years ago, it was
important to me to find the correct decal set. Just because I really liked
how they looked on the bike's down tube . I also got with Reynolds for new
tubing decals. They did not have the same ones originally used (French) but
they sent me scans of every old decal they still had available and I found
something suitable. They were nice people to deal with btw.

A Rivendell Road was built with French diameter tubing? I didn't think
Waterford was using French diameter 531 at that time.

[RBW] Cloth Tape over Cork Grips?

2013-05-07 Thread Deacon Patrick
My cork grips are starting to chip (apparently enjoying their age and/or being
tossed around too much). I love their girth and shape, so before they fall
apart I am planning on cloth tape/shellacing them.

I plan on starting with them and wrapping up so I have a solid finished edge on
them. Should I add twine, which I will use on the top just under the shifters,
located at the top of the bend of the bars?

Any advice?

Manny, great set of photos. Last time I was in SF a friend and I went for a
great hike on those trails and up to Sutro Tower. The trails looked perfect
for an urban mixed terrain ride.

I've know Ray for over 25yrs. He's an SF original that I used to skate and
party with in the 80s. Such a funny guy.

All the photos are so good and make me miss SF terribly. Hopefully I'll get
out for some riding in the next couple of days and remind myself that it's
not a bad thing living here in Portland.

I am moving and sadly have to get rid of my extra tires. My storage loss,
your gain. Good chance to pick up some lightly used tires on the cheap.

Schwalbe Marathon Winter, 700 x 35, used one winter sparingly, most of the
studs intact, should be at least two more winters in 'em. *$80 including
shipping.*

*
Schwalbe Marathon Dureme, 700 x 40, used one season, plenty of life left. * $80
including shipping.*

*
Schwalbe Marathon Supreme, 700 x 50, not used by me, very sparingly by
previous owner, came on a bike he said was ridden less than 100 miles and
that seemed true to me. *$90 including shipping.*

Re: [RBW] Re: Show me your overstuffed Small Sackville Saddlesack

2013-05-07 Thread PATRICK MOORE
I don't think it's contentious at all. What a boring world where everybody
had the same opinion about everything. Let differences flourish! (In both
senses.) I am puzzled and somewhat amused by some people's thin
skinned-ness.

Obviously this is a case where we each have our own preference, but there's
nothing at all wrong with that.

FWIW, I personally prefer saddlebags for all but quite heavy or bulky
loads, simply because they don't require a rack (at least those I use on my
bikes) but I prefer panniers for the shopping ease. I wheel my bikes
through the stores as my shopping cart and find the grocery-specific Banjos
the best I've used -- wish I could afford the upscale Ortliebs, but for the
money the BBs are excellent. And of course they are so easy to put on and
take off. The hook on top/bungee on the bottom is not the most secure
system but for short grocery rides (I usually extend them to 11 miles rt or
more) they are fine.

And a plug for the Medium Saddlesack. I've carried up to 30 lb and, more to
the point, it will carry as much as a single Ortlieb Packer, ie about one
paper grocery sack's worth with flap closed, though I -- and I emphasize
that I am speaking for myself -- find it considerably less easy to load
than an open-style pannier.

I am debating whether to continue the conversion of a larger-sized Timbuktu
bag into a pannier by bolting on an Ortlieb mount. Right now it's got the
simple dowel + toe straps system that works very well, but it takes a
tedious 10 seconds to release it. OTOH, the dowel/strap system does allow
me to use it also as a messenger bag while the Ortleib clamps would stick
out on the back ...

Very true, Ron. My original plan was to just tape the bars above the cork
grips, but when I saw the chunks coming out I figured taping them too was
the way to go. An added benefit for my large monkey hands is the wider
circumference. I may add another layer at some point just for that purpose.

[RBW] Re: Mounting a Dyno Light on a Nitto Mini Front Rack with a Basket?

2013-05-07 Thread Austin Andrews
I am not sure which front rack she has but I have a wald basket attached to
a Nitto mini-front rack, forget which one exactly, which has a tab on the
front of the rack for a light
(see: http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3464/3990663590_855aeb58a7_z.jpg?zz=1)

I mounted my light on there with a simple nut and bolt. You could also
attach it to one of the threaded eyelets on the side of the rack but that
may prove more complicated than the above. I can take a picture of my
set-up later today if you would like.

Re: [RBW] Mounting a Dyno Light on a Nitto Mini Front Rack with a Basket?

2013-05-07 Thread Dan McNamara
For my wife's Betty I managed to squeeze a dyno light on the front of a
rack using a slightly bent canti brake mount. This was to clear a medium
Wald. Not sure about clearing a Large.

I have also used a homemade version of a Paul Gino mount to do a fork mount
on the mid-fork braze-on. The rack stays were mounted on the inside of the
braze-on.

The Mini-front is not going to work on a Betty, though. You will need a
Mark's Rack or another rack with an appropriate diving board for the
caliper brake bolts.

[RBW] Re: Mounting a Dyno Light on a Nitto Mini Front Rack with a Basket?

2013-05-07 Thread Minh
Rick,

It depends on how much clearance you have out front of the basket or
underneath, search flickr for edelux, or dyno lights and you can see a few
options. i think the under basket mount looks the cleanest (and you don't
have a light hanging out front), but this mounting location would depend on
the light you settle in on.a picture of the light you bought and the
basket setup would help.

For some reason I thought the Quickbeam was canti-brakes . So you have a
Mark's rack not a Mini-front. You could use that mounting hole on the
front.

Here is a thread from earlier this year on a really nice mod to put a Paul
Gino on the strut of a Mark's rack. I like getting the light down a little
lower than the front of the rack but not as low as the mid-fork braze on so
I'll probably end up doing this.

I don't cramp. Not even when I did the coast to coast tour. Always
assumed it to be a genetics thing.

If diet controls cramping, then I suggest animal free Mediterranean diet as
that's mine. Of course I do bonk every now and then. My body fat is low
and it is sometimes hard to keep optimal calorie flow when riding long
distance with loaded panniers day after day.

Re: [RBW] any metal fenders that will fit 700/42c tires

2013-05-07 Thread William
David,

Chiming in on your exchange with Steve regarding using Honjos and Hetres on
a Hilsen (the Triple "H").

In my opinion, the critical thing that Steve's Saluki had that your bike
does not have is cantilever brakes. The place where you will have the
biggest clearance problem is through the brake calipers. Steve never had
that problem on his Canti-Luki. The Honjo hardware that you will need to
use in the area of the brake bridge will be problematic. On my 58cm 650B
Hilsen, I found Hetres and Honjos impossible. Hetres and SKS fenders was
barely adequate. I've now gone to SKS Longboards and Grand Bois Lierre
tires and I find that ideal for the caliper-brake equipped Hilsen. The
Lierre really is an excellent tire, every bit as good as the Hetre, in my
opinion.

As Steve pointed out correctly, there's adequate room at the chain stays.

Re: [RBW] Re: Mounting a Dyno Light on a Nitto Mini Front Rack with a Basket?

2013-05-07 Thread Minh
Rick,

I have a supernova on my nitto mini front mounted on one of the side bolts
using a long M6(?) bolt and a plastic spacer to push it out far enough to
clear the rack. I mounted mine upside down (which some people say is a bad
idea, but i don't ride that particular bike in the rain that often) and i
think a basket could mount on top with the light in that position.

no pics as i'm out of town, but you should be able to find something on
flickr if you search for supernova. Dan's link to using a gino mount (or a
diy gino), is a similiar concept of mounting it below the basket.

we are making it sound complicated, but run to the hardware store and play
around with bolts/brackets to find something that fits.

The Lierre hasn't received much love on the lists, but I like mine just
fine. Some have said the tread siping catches small stones that then
puncture the tires, but although mine have captured some small stones,
I've never had punctures.

I use the Lierre on my Kogswell P/R, which really was designed for a
38mm tire. The P/R is mainly used as my touring bike. I had a set of
Pari Motos on the bike but put the Lierres on when my bike club was
going on a tour of the gravel surfaced Greenbrier Trail in West
Virginia. We were on that tour only a few miles from the eipcenter on
Earthquake Day. Since then I've used the bike on gravel roads on the
C&O Canal, the Great Allegheny Passage and most recently on the Delaware
Water Gap Adventure tour, and never a flat.

So, for my money, if 38mm is your maximum tire size and you want
something a little sturdier than an event tire, the Lierre is just the
ticket.

Here is my newly converted 650b Rambouillet with new Hetre Legers and SKS
Longboards. The tires and fenders fit just perfectly fine with few
millimeters to spare. FWIW - The new Legers are exact 41mm wide.

Re: [RBW] any metal fenders that will fit 700/42c tires

2013-05-07 Thread Tom Harrop
To add to what Grant said: I use 60 mm 700c Berthoud fenders with 60 mm Big
Apples and there are no clearance issues whatsoever—in fact I still spaced
the fenders away from the frame—because the frame has so much tyre
clearance. Having said that, the fenders are only just wide enough to cover
the tyres.

[RBW] Re: Mounting a Dyno Light on a Nitto Mini Front Rack with a Basket?

To add more clearance out front, I used a long spacer (about 1 1/2 inch?)
and longer bolt, and it clears the basket. Easy, cheap solution, and I
prefer to use the front mount of the Nitto rack, above the wheel.

Re: [RBW] Re: Appaloosa - the first of a whole new horse breed?

2013-05-07 Thread Montclair BobbyB
Thanks for posting this... I've long been a Jeff Jones fan, and I think
he's definitely heading in the right direction. I was recently at the
Fruita Fat Tire Festival (in Western CO), and I ran into 2 guys from Surly
(Bob and Matt, great guys). They were each riding leftover prototypes of
the Krampus (29er with Knard tires), and were kind enough to let me take
one out for a spin. While the weekend event seemed to be drowning in a sea
of carbon and full-suspension bikes, THIS honestly was the highlight of the
weekend.. a fully-rigid steel 29er with FAT TIRES!! I rode 2 demo bikes
(with ridiculous price tags); a Giant carbon hardtail race 29er
(ridiculously light, but squirrelly), and a Santa Cruz Tallboy carbon, full
suspension.. each had a 10-speed cassette.  I have long admired Santa Cruz;
I still think they're one of the best MTB manufacturers. I rode the
Tallboy for 2 days, and honestly, I couldn't wait to get off it. I hated
the mushy feel and the lack of connection to the trail. When I arrived
back in NJ, I gratefully hugged my steel Niner.

Overall I have to say I was deeply disappointed by the array of bikes I saw
from the big manufacturers at the Festival... I don;t know, I must be
losing touch.

[RBW] Re: Interesting discussion: Riv bikes v. BQ bikes

2013-05-07 Thread dougP
She's done a decently balanced review. I love my Atlantis (now well over
40,000 miles) and anxiously await every issue of BQ. I do not agree
completely with either Grant or Jan but both have well substantiated
arguments for their philosophies. To me, it boils down to Grant's
statement (somewhere?) that "...a bike frame is a place to hang the parts
you want..." and Jan's belief that one must start with the wheel & tire
size and design an integrated bicycle from there, considering rider weight,
luggage, racks, lights, etc. Grant's approach demands versatility whereas
Jan's seems to lean toward specificity. Granted Jan's ideas lead to a bike
that's still quite versatile, but bikes built to his ideal will be more
rider specific; i.e., built for one rider's height, weight, etc.

I've learned a lot from both of these guys, and they both contribute real,
useful information. I'm glad we've got resources such as Grant & Jan in
the bicycle world. They are both into real world cycling that we can
relate to and actually enjoy. Thumbs up to Lovely Bicycle for a great
article.

[RBW] NYC 5 Boro Bike Tour

My first time at this great event in New York City which took me to places
I've never seen before, couldn't get to by car and certainly wouldn't get
there by bike on a normal day (like the Verrazano Bridge). Over 32,000+

to be a custom on the side of a bridge belonging to an event coordinator.

[RBW] The last tall Atlantis frames

Just because I'm curious, when were the last tall Atlantis frames made, the
66cm, and 68cm versions? Do these sizes ever come up for resale?

Jim's frame geometry page http://www.cyclofiend.com/rbw/geometry.html is
very helpful, but I can't find the year that production stopped on the
taller frames.

[RBW] Re: Interesting discussion: Riv bikes v. BQ bikes

2013-05-07 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
I'm a strong advocate of not reading too much navel-gazing analyses of geometry
and other BS, and JUST RIDE. That said...

It could be that what makes an optimal bike for brevets in the Cascades is
somewhat different than what goes into GP's family of all-rounders that get
tested on the rocky goat paths of Shell Ridge in Walnut Creek. Sure, a lot of
Riv owners and enthusiasts get seduced by the romance of brevets, but I've
never read GP expressing much interest in brevets, or in optimizing his bikes
for Jan's front-loaded version of brevets. Undersized tubing? Maybe it's not
obvious to everybody, but a lot of plus-sized people are drawn to Riv by the
promise of high-bar comfort and sturdiness. Put some chugging 270-pounder on a
bike with undersized tubes, and it's likely to get a bit too exciting to be
enjoyable.

I come down on the Riv side. I shy away from the faintest whiff of daintiness
and anything that seems French. I draw a lot more parallels between RBW and
Surly than I do between RBW and the integrated rando bike concept.

Re: [RBW] Re: Interesting discussion: Riv bikes v. BQ bikes

2013-05-07 Thread Seth Vidal
I agree with your points on lighter or thinner tubing, Jim, One thing I
have considered, thought, is sending off the romulus and getting a new fork
made for it in what would be a decidedly high rake (low trail) bike.
Like Rene has done on this list.

I think that would be a better test to see if I'm happier with it or not -
independent of tubing and other choices.

That's why when I saw this post from soma I was fairly excited
http://www.somafab.blogspot.com/2013/05/low-trail-forks.html

They will likely only make them for 1-1/8" threadless but I'd think about
picking up a cross check or a pacer or a double cross to try that out.

Having said that whenever I ride the hilsen or the romulus I'm reminded
that it is really super pleasant to ride the way it is and leaving it alone
doesn't cost anything, then I think about other things and then I notice a
coffee shop and my mind slips to other things altogether.

I would guess the date production stopped was one or two years earlier than

Re: [RBW] Re: Interesting discussion: Riv bikes v. BQ bikes

2013-05-07 Thread Brian Hanson
Jan and Grant remind me of old "Outdoor Life" writers like Jack O'Connor
who brought romance and excitement to their sport (hunting). They promote
the sport they love through their ideas and designs, but both love
different things about the sport/lifestyle. I generally love reading
everything they write. They are both right on for their respective
audiences. We would be a poorer group if either was gone, and it will be a
sad day when they retire from the bike world.
