[RBW] Re: Cambium vs. Flyer question
I've been riding a B-17 for about ten years and have a Gyes Flyer knock-off. I recently tried a Cambium C15 for a few days. It has nice shock absorbing qualities but I didn't care for the texture at all. As mentioned above, I felt much more chafing action as it grabbed onto my shorts. I also found it much more difficult to reposition myself as I've grown accustomed to just sliding along smooth leather, the C15 required me to stand up and sit back down. I much prefer a smooth leather saddle. In the end, I returned the Cambium demo and purchased a Selle Anatomica and it is my new favorite saddle ever. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. 250 is steep, but I think he'll find a buyer for 150. Sure, it's a heavy old bike-boom 10-speed with steel parts, but there's a small group of folks out there who have a touch of fondest for these things, and this one is in very nice shape with a pretty color. In the 80s when you needed a beater for college, you'd pick up one of those for $20 at a garage sale and not cry when it got stolen. In the 90s when they rolled in as a trade in, you'd put straight bars and new tires and cables on them, and sell them for $80. Now, no mechanics even remember cottered cranks, much less possess the tools to get them off, much less possess the cotters to put them back on. That one is a really really nice color and the chromed tips are pretty, but if I owned that bike, I'd give it away. If Grant saw it locked to a parking meter, he might take photos of it and write interesting comments about manufacturing details of the era, but he would have no interest in owning it, possessing it, or riding it, much less giving any of his money for it. The 1970s were a miraculous time in the history of cycling, that laid the groundwork for a lot of things that happened afterwards, but the cheapest bikes from the 1970s deserve to be collected about as much as the cheapest cars from the 1970s do. [RBW] Re: How was your weekend ride?
On Saturday I drove down from CT to Frederick, MD for the DC Randonneurs Urbana 200k. I finally got to meet Nick Bull, a frequent poster on these groups, and lots of other great people. I had registered for the 200km Pastries and Coffe brevet on March 7, but snow forced a rescheduling that I couldn't make. This brevetwas rescheduled from the week before from YET ANOTHER! snowstorm. It had been 70+ degrees in the area on Thursday but temps were freezing or below at the 7:00am start. I don't know if they ever got much higher than 40. Mike Wali, one of the ride volunteers was at the Waffle House start to let prepare everyone for the 9400 feet of climbing that awaited us. Although this would be number 11 toward my first R-12, I was nervous because my last two 200k rides were super flat and the last one was on Feb. 8. around 40 riders started into the stiff headwind that stayed with us all the way to the halfway point at State Line, PA. I was dressed perfectly for a change. I am normally drenched in sweat no matter how cold it is but I intentionally started out underdressed and never got sweaty until the tough climb of Catoctin Mt. We had a tailwind pretty much the entire second half of the ride. I experimented with my nutrition and it was a success. No bonks at all. I finished squarely in the middle of the pack at 11hours, 29 minutes, and I felt surprisingly great for this early in the season. I think it bodes well for my PBP aspirations. I'm going down to Cranbury, NJ for their 200k on Saturday, then to good ol' Kansas City (crazy little women!) for a 300 k the following Saturday. Good times but I would give anything for 70 degree weather! -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Re: Old Quickbeam
I agree with Minh in a general way, but I wouldn't be too quick to dismiss the collectable quality of the better Rivendell stock models; after all, look at what happens to RB-1s and XOs. The absolutely first criterion for Riv bike quality is the handling, and IME, having owned 5 -- tho' not a QB -- they are better in this regard, for my taste at least, than most of the many other bikes I've ridden. I expect that in 10 or 20 years, there'll be a strong market in used Rivs of all types. That said, I'd ignore provenance, except in a desultory way, and ride the new bike! Re: [RBW] How was your weekend ride?
I rode a 400k that I also organized, with two fellow randonneurs. There was quite a lot of hill climbing early and once we got in a flatter part of the route, the wind kicked up to a ferocious gale. Later after dark the wind died down some but even so we did not make it to the penultimate control by midnight so there was nothing open. It was then I remembered that I stashed a water bottle in my Carradice earlier and was thankful for my foresight, however unintended. We made it back to the start at 2:46 am for a total time of 20:46. Here is the route: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/7177029 I didn't take any pics but my friend and fellow Rivendell custom owner did so let me see if I can find some of those :) On Mar 29, 2015 10:07 PM, JohnS sharp...@gmail.com wrote: Trying to instigate a discussion on everyone's weekend ride. The wind wasn't nearly as bad and the sun was shining which helped a lot. I was using the low gear for about 10% of the ride, more than I'll think I'll be using later in the season. It did get me up all but one really tough hill so it definitely is helping. I was pretty tired till I got home. The picture shows my small Sackville sack in the Wald basket. All my gear was in there. To respond to Drew's question, I did get my item. It took a long time, and there were several emails, but I got my item, and it was as promised. In fairness, after I got my first note from Peter telling me there had been a shipping error, I told him not to worry - the item was for bike I was going to build until later. If I had been building up a bike at the time and needing the crank to finish, I would have been more frustrated. Later when it became clear that my experience wasn't unique, I held off on sending a note to Jim because it seemed that items were being shipped, albeit very slowly. Re: [RBW] Help a so-so mechanic with rear derailed issues
It sounds as if you are turning the adjuster the wrong way. Perhaps back it off, ensuring that the small cog stop screw is properly adjusted. I find it hard to imagine how a friction setup will cause problems, unless the cable is too tight, or unless there is something preventing the cable from relaxing fully. One remedy: toss the DA shifters and install Silvers. Absolutely the best I've used, including Retrofriction and PowerRatchets, and IME, better for frictioning 9 by bar end even than by down tubers. On my Fargo, with a bastard 13-27 9, composed of orphan cogs and 9 sp spacers, the Silver BES's shift precisely all up and down the cassette. On Tue, Mar 31, 2015 at 6:22 PM, 'Tim' via RBW Owners Bunch rbw-owners-bunch@googlegroups.com wrote: Here's the deal: I've adjusted my derailers often but I can't get the rear shifting right on my Hilsen. I have DuraAce bar ends which I've been using in friction mode for about a year and a half. I have a brand new rear cassette, 9-speed, brand new chain and chain rings. I use Sheldon's method when setting things up. I shift to the highest gear (when the cable is loosest) with the cable disconnected. I pull the cable until it is just snug, then tighten the bolt. I leave about 1 available turn on each barrel adjuster (there are two for the rear cable) to loosen the cable if need be, which leaves the much more room for the barrel adjusters to tighten it. I can't seem to get the shifting to stay still in the lowest 3 gears. It skips back and forth. It will be ok if there's not too much of a load on the pedals but it wants to wander when I'm climbing. This is the case in all three chainrings. What gives?!? I keep tightening the barrel adjusters 1/2 turn at a time and can't seem to get it right. I loosen and that's no help either. When I go to the very lowest gear (requiring the most cable tension) it stays in place fine. [RBW] Re: Go fast-ish tires on the Hillborne
I am so torn on these tires. I'm currently riding 40mm Duremes and I'm very unhappy with them. They are sluggish and when I make a sharp turn, which I do quite often, the outside lugs feel squirmy and it's very unsettling. On the other hand, I worry about flats and overall durability of the Barlow Pass tires. I look forward to hearing more about your experience with them. I do these routes and climbs all the time by myself, and generally consider myself a slow, meandering cyclists that is out for the sake of riding, but something came over me and I sped to the front of the pack on my Gunnar Sport (almost took my new Sam) and stayed there the whole ride. Felt pretty good. I was 3rd out of 25 people or so the whole time. I like that I now know that I can push myself outside of my 11-12mph comfort zone into a 14-15 mph one and not feel totally ragged after, I still had plenty of energy after. Though maybe the ride up Tunnel on my quickbeam 2 days prior helped warm me up. Two observations from my weekend ride: 1. I love the Oakland / Berkeley hills. I've lived here 4 years and I still can't believe such amazing greenspace and parks that are within urban city limits. All my climbing up Tunnel road has definitely made me a stronger rider. 2. After getting to top of the largest and longest climb we stopped for a break and a handful of people were looking at my bike (which had grand bois cypres 700 x 33 tires) commenting about how they'd love a steel bike with 28mm tires for a commuter bike, which just seemed weird to me since I was on such a bike with even wider tires and it clearly was not a commuter bike. Not to mention I had been there waiting for 5 minutes or more before that group even showed up. I spend so much time on this thread and with other RWB-ers that I forget how much we stand out with our baggy clothes, steel bikes, wide tires, racks, and bags. Re: [RBW] Re: What do Rivendell Riders use for head coverings for riding in the sun?
I'm 89.999% sure these are only available from Australia. But it really is a non-issue nowadays. She's responsive to e-mail if you have any questions and shipping was fast and cheap for me; On my 2nd purchase I bought four on sale and shipping was free. For the past couple years I've been using the Tourer model. Starting tomorrow I'm going to try the Explorer in preparation for a hilly metric century I'm doing this weekend (Party ay Pardee). The Explorer has a bit more coverage and straps that attach to your helmet straps to keep the Legionnaires flap from lifting in the breeze. The full size baseball hat brim on all models is out of this world for sheilding your eyes and the front of your face from the sun and is a great platform for my particular rear view mirror. Give it a try. I do not think you can go wrong. The only issue is it does look kinda goofy. But wearing it you can't tell so that's the other peoples problem. I will say it definitely protects you from the sun, definitely keeps you cooler, and does not interfere with the impact protectiion of the helmet. [RBW] Re: Go fast-ish tires on the Hillborne
Since these are on a second set of wheels, I will be swapping them when I commute. I agree that getting a flat at 6am while racing to catch a train would be bad since I start class at 8am. My commute is along often dark gravel paths and city streets. For that, I will be using the 36h Mavic A719s with Schwalbe Mondial 40s. I've gotten 1000s of miles on previous Marathons. I may always turn to Schwalbe for commuting needs. This new set up has been the dream*... to own a Hillborne with a bombproof (albeit slower) set of wheels and tires for commuting and trails and a light, nimble set for weekends and summers. * The real dream is a lightweight Hilson or Rodeo (or both) and a beefed up Hunq but that's a bit out of the range of a professor's salary in the bay area. For now, with two sets of wheels, the Sam is proving to be the perfect bike. I'm beginning to wonder if I'll ever ride my SOMA mtb again. Re: [RBW] Re: What do Rivendell Riders use for head coverings for riding in the sun?
Personally, I do not see how anyone can disagree with Steve. Maybe his delivery is harsh but the message true. Bangs on the head are cumulative and the long term results have been proven. If I had a bludgeoned brain I would be taking measures to protect it. I'm not saying helmets are perfect or the only answer, but if you need further proof just look at what's going on in the NFL. As inferior as helmets may be, I do not see anyone choosing to play in the NFL without a helmet I do not like wearing helmets either, and for me, someone who doesn't have a post-bludgeoned brain, I probably stand a better chance of getting melanoma than a brain trauma riding a bike. That's why I wear a Treadley helmet hat! It allows me to continue to wear a helmet to help protect me from potential brain trauma and also helps protect me from the sun ...without all the chemicals in suntan lotion.. But hey ... if I ate Deacon's recommended Paleo diet (or whatever variance it may be) I wouldn't have to worry about melanoma or getting run over by a car because that diet alone would kill me first. Deacon, I mean no harm to you personally. But you put this stuff out there, and you are free to speak and do as you wish, but we are also entitled to our opinions based on our own personal knowledge and experience. I don't think Christ's healing balm has anything to do with Steve opinion, or mine for that matter. Re: [RBW] Re: Go fast-ish tires on the Hillborne
Matt, I think the only way to know for sure is to try. Luckily, supple tires have great re-sale value on the list. I planned to take off the fragile GB Cypres 700x32s once the rains hit last year...they're still on. I've had zero punctures (one pothole pinch flat) in 9 months of my 10 miles a day commute plus a few fun rides. However, as I near retirement my tastes could change so please keep us updated on the flat stats. Holy cow! I had no idea what I've been missing! I now understand the concept of supple. It was like riding on a cloud... a very smooth, fast and responsive cloud. My most sincere thanks to everyone who recommended Compass tires and suggested the Barlow Pass Extralights over the Stampede Pass. I'm sure I would have been thrilled with the Stampedes as well but the extra size gives me a little more confidence that my riding might be a little more flat-free. I am amazed at the speed and feel of the bike now. My hat's off to everyone at Compass. Sam has been reborn beyond the go-fastish machine I was hoping for from this purchase. Now I get to leverage my birthday to finally get tires for the lighter 32 hole XT/Synergy wheels. I wanted to set them up to turn the Sam into my only go-fastish road bike for summer riding. I think I have it narrowed down to either 700x35 or 700x32 Marathon Supremes or Compass Stampede Pass (700x32). I was leaning toward the Supreme 32's to be a big difference from the beefy Mondials but, after reading Jan's articles on tire size and pressure I started to think Supreme 35's might be a better choice. The reason I lean toward the Schwalbes is that I've had a long, very positive and almost flatless history with Schwalbe. Of course this wouldn't be a dilemma if I could just talk my wife into buying me the Rodeo in the web specials! Since the Rodeo is not to be, I'd appreciate any guidance for a blissful, light-ish, go fast-ish road riding summer spent on the Hillborne. Re: [RBW] Re: FS 58 cm Cromo Bosco BullMoose bars
I have been trying to think up a very thoughtful response to all of this. Being on the bogus end of a burn has perhaps made this a bit more difficult. The intent of my original response post was a good faith effort to contact Peter since phone calls, texts, and emials were failing. Unfortunately as of writing it does not seem to have had it's desired effect. In any event I must admit as much as I am dissapointed by this experience I am equally confused. You see for the life of me I can't quite figure out why someone would sell items to others, hold onto them citing shipping delays or health problems or..., causing some degree of concern or frustration on the purchaseres part, ultimately just to send the part(s) out. Is it just me or does any one else find this behavior a bit pecular. I mean once, maybe even twice, to have health issues, or shipping delays, I get it stuff happens. But I think that it is fair to conclude at this point there is a bit more to the story than that. So I have now resigned myself to the fact that this is more than likely a loss. I am tired of thinking about it and if Peter needs the money that bad then he can have it and I wish him well. Hopefully he will find good health mentally, spiritually, physically, and if my 80$ somehow contributes to this then all the better. This type of behavior really just bums me out big time. Please forgive me and thank you for bearing with me as I know I dont post often, but I read often and enjoy many of the thoughts and experiences shared by those that do. I will again beg your pardon as typically I don't take things this hard but in an other wise complicated world the owners bunch is where I come for my daily dose of aaw shucks, golly wally, the good guys look out for the other guys, wear white, and always win...The stuff about lugs and handlebar tape is cool to!) If I had been building up a bike at the time and needing the crank to finish, I would have been more frustrated. Later when it became clear that my experience wasn't unique, I held off on sending a note to Jim because it seemed that items were being shipped, albeit very slowly. That may have been a mistake on my part, but I have heard enough unbelievable stories from students that ended up being true, that I tend to be very careful. I have an old Quickbeam that I am trying to get a little history on. I purchased it used several years ago from a fellow who had an impressive stable full of spectacular bikes. He said that he purchased it from the floor of a bicycle show some time around 2004. He thought that it might be a prototype, but it does not have the fancy lugs that are shown on prototype examples in cyclofiend's website. The trail grows cold here. There is no serial number stamped on the bottom bracket where I would expect to see it. Only the name Rivendell is stamped into the shell. Did QB's have s/n's stamped like other Rivendell's? Perhaps it is located in a different place? Maybe it was on a sticker? I was hoping to find this information as I am considering selling this old friend as my knees aren't enjoying the ss experience like they once did and I would like to offer as much information as I can. [RBW] Beausage Reminder
No, I can't trade my awesome Pass Stow rack for a smaller front rack and a rear rack because a) I use a trail a bike to pull my daughter too often and a rear rack would interfere and b) the wide span of the porter rack is so stinking useful. I wanted to only because the style of porter racks feels a tad ostentatious. The Pass Stow is otherwise excellent and the maker was super to buy from. But still, it's Spring, and these things must be questioned. Then, Bam! A Hunq on the Blug shows up with a Pass Stow and the whole thing is the very definition of badass. Not one whit of dandy-ism. So why is this classy bike with a classy rack so tough looking? The same rack. The same Cap'n Hook net. One cheap beat up basket. [RBW] FS: Bosco Cockpit - $60
55cm Bosco bars in Cromo Dullbrite finish, with Avid SD-7 levers and rubber grips. I bought these on Ebay last week and installed them once, but they aren't going to work for me. Re: [RBW] Re: Coffee Outside
In any case, even the crappiest cup of coffee tastes great when you're outside in the morning. In my protracted career of coffee snobbery my experience has been that quality coffee overcomes uneven methods; it's easy to make good coffee with good beans. [RBW] FS: Clockwork 650b Lugged Frame/Fork 56cm - Quickbeam-ish
Clockwork 650b Frame/Fork Custom built by Joel of Clockwork. 56cm seat-tube. I'll take more measurements this evening. Takes 650b wheels, cantilever brakes, 1 quill stem, 3 water bottle bosses, double fork eyelets, rack/fender eyelets, fender mounts at seat and chainstay bridges, under fork crown. Rear is 135mm spacing - also has braze-ons for running Rohloff shift cables (these conveniently double as rear dynamo guides). Can be set up as a single speed of is Rohloff internal hub ready. Basically a Quickbeam/Simpleone type Frame/fork are in nice condition, no dents/dings. Only thing I can find is two powdercoat imperfections or wear, photos show them. I picked this up recently from the original owner, and was going to surprise a friend with it last weekend. Turns out it's a couple cm too short, and he needs gears and wasn't thrilled about an internal gear hub. I was kinda bummed, and am also bummed it can't stay in the household - I'm way too tall, SO is way too short. Lugged frame and fork - based on Clockwork's current prices, this would put it in the $1700 area, possibly more with the added brazeons. I'm asking $700 to RBW-OB listers, plus shipping costs and any Paypal fees. Price is for frame and fork, headset shown is not included. I'll pay for a shop to pack this up for shipping. We also know crabon fiber bikes are lighter than steel ones. So what does it prove, exactly? If riding without a helmet is his joy, then let him have it. There's only so much changing of hearts and minds you're going to do on an email list. I take a risk riding my bike also, for a different health related reason I'm not going to get into here, but it would leave my life so much more empty if I could not ride, that it's worth it to me to take the risk. Re: [RBW] Re: What do Rivendell Riders use for head coverings for riding in the sun?
Not to perpetuate any discussion on the helmet topic, my position on the issue is that if I'm going to wear one (and I do), I want to make it as bold and awesome as my bikes are. Therefore, I just replaced my aging Specialized helmet with a new POC Octal MIPS bright orange helmet that cost a fortune for a helmet, but gives my wife peace of mind: http://news.pocsports.com/2014/08/21/poc-unveils-the-octal-avip-mips-and-eye-park/ Since its vents are so large (and it feels awesome when riding with it), I'm going to explore some of the great suggestions that have been shared in this thread to ride with warm temperatures and additional sun protection as we're getting summer temperatures here in the SF Bay Area now. When it's colder, I just wear and love the Icebreaker Chase Beanies: http://www.icebreaker.com/en/web-specials/chase-beanie/100746_WS.html?dwvar_100746__WS_color=302cts=110%7C501%7CD87%7C302%7C401 René On Tue, Mar 31, 2015 at 10:54 AM, John jphillip...@icloud.com wrote: This is getting away from the sun hat topic, and I also hate wearing a helmet, but at least Steve cares enough about all of us to call us ninnies for not wearing one. Terrific news, Sean. I'm really glad that worked for you. Good job! On Tuesday, March 31, 2015 at 1:21:16 PM UTC-7, SeanMac wrote: Good news - my wedge is no longer stuck! At the suggestion of Bill (and implied by several others), I cut a board that would fit over the head tube. I drilled a hole in the board that was large enough for the stem bolt. Then I simply screwed the bolt into the wedge and kept screwing until the wedge unstuck itself and I could pull it right out of the head tube. This was an easy solution to my problem, and certainly less work than pulling off the fenders, brakes, etc. The next step in the process for me is a new stem. I will be placing an order from Rivendell today before the 6% off coupon expires. I need to decide whether to order a 25.4 clamp to go with my albatross bars (which was the point of this little project) or to order a 26.0 clamp. I have a sham to use the larger stem with my albatross bars. Getting the bigger size also allows me to switch back to the noodles at some point if I decide that the albatross bars are not for me. However, a 25.4 clamp size without a shim would be a better fit for the albatross bars. What to do, what to do? Thanks for all of the help with my stuck stem wedge. [RBW] Re: Your favorite cruising gear?
Patrick, you pretty much nailed it. 70 inches is the only gear that is duplicated on my half-step setup, so depending on whether I'm on 16 or 18 in the rear, I can pick 65/70 inches or 70/78 inches on my halfsteps and make great strides. Re: [RBW] Klunking!
This particular race and video were done on January 20th, 1979 for a local TV station which broadcast it in the Bay Area and then it went syndicated across the nation, exposing America to Klunking. I love this video and have watched it many times, along with the documentary Klunkerz. I dare anyone to go watch some clips from VisionQuest or Gross Anatomy on Youtube and then tell me the blond stoner at 50 seconds in is not a young Matthew Modine before he became famous. I know it's not him but the physical resemblance and speech pattern similarities are remarkable. [RBW] Re: Repair help needed - Stuck stem expander wedge
Good news - my wedge is no longer stuck! The frustrating and suspect thing is that a paypal refund would take the same time to do as writing an email telling me he was too busy to do that. [RBW] Help a so-so mechanic with rear derailed issues
Here's the deal: I've adjusted my derailers often but I can't get the rear shifting right on my Hilsen. When I go to the very lowest gear (requiring the most cable tension) it stays in place fine. my QB only has a sticker for a SN. IMHO, a QB (or a Rivendell in general) is not a Herse, and a QB was always meant as an affordable bike so i don't see this as collectible. [RBW] Re: Help a so-so mechanic with rear derailed issues
What happens when the cable is disconnected? Does the derailer stay in high gear? You may need to adjust the high gear limit screw to allow the derailer to travel freely to the small cog. Another possibility is the b-tension screw adjustment. Loosening that screw can make the shifting better, but you don't want it so loose that it bumps into the large cog. If none of those work, my next thought is that the derailer hanger is a little bent. You may want to get the alignment checked. Good thing it's a steel frame. jim m wc ca On Tuesday, March 31, 2015 at 5:22:38 PM UTC-7, Tim wrote: Here's the deal: I've adjusted my derailers often but I can't get the rear shifting right on my Hilsen. [RBW] Re: Help a so-so mechanic with rear derailed issues
If you are using friction then the cable tightness or looseness is not relevant. Either you put the shifter in the wrong place when you shifted into that gear in the first place (user error) or the shifter itself is slipping, not providing quite enough friction to hold the derailer in place. If it is just simple user error, then the slipping would be equally likely to wander to a smaller cog or wander to a larger cog. In both cases you moved the shifter to an intermediate position. If it is the latter, where the shifter is slipping, then that can only happen in one direction, wandering to a smaller cog, because it is the spring in the derailer winning a tug-of-war with the friction in the shifter. If it is user error, you could test it by switching to index. Once you've got indexing adjusted right, you can't put the shifter in an intermediate position. Of course you have to get it adjusted right which means getting the cable tension right. If it is the shifter slipping, you can eliminate slipping by switching to index. Or you can snug up the friction part by tightening the screw that holds the shifter in place. Just a little bit. You should be able to feel the difference when you shift. Don't abuse it and really overtighten it. Best of luck. For what it's worth, many people find 9-speed is really sensitive to perfect friction shifting. Some say it's no problem, others say it's always a problem. Some have mixed results.
