"I don't think anyone is disputing the value of avoiding accidents in the
first place. The problem is, you can't always. And what then?"

Fall good?
Whatever the case, helmeted or not, know how to fall. There's no time to think
about it, but if you find yourself about to hit something you weren't planning
to, fall better. Nearly 40 years of falling on skateboards has taught my body
something about self preservation, I rely on that "training" when I fall.
Age 8 or 108, we could all benifit from more experience falling right.

Agreed - these are rather silly on a Hunq - not least of all because they

Hahaha crap. I thought I was the only one too. It does work really well
flipped.

They are the trp levers, and they are awkward used right side up on these bars,
but they are awesome upside down.

Here's my current set up. Lights are underneath on Paul Gino mounts connected
to the rack. Love the setup and can't say enough good things about the Brooks
leather tape. This roll has been on 3 bikes in the past 8 years. Would be
hesitant to go for the colors since I've seen some that faded in the sun.

Re: [RBW] Re: Another S3X hub

2016-09-13 Thread Mark Parker
Patrick:

I ran a freewheel for a while on the S3X that I sold you. While running
the freewheel on it, I had trouble at times getting it to shift. It seemed
to shift better for me while running the fixed sprocket when I applied a
little backwards force on the pedals. It was one of the reasons I cleaned
it out. I thought perhaps the grease was making it stick. I still had the
shifting trouble after I had cleaned it. I went back to fixed and didn't
have any more trouble with it.

My shifting problems were similar to an AW when you shift from first to
second. If you are pedaling hard it stays in first and then when you ease
up it goes into second. Except I couldn't ease up because the freewheel
kept me from doing this. It eventually would drop into the correct gear.

If you really want to play around I have a Bendix manual 2 speed that you
could turn into a 2 speed fix, but I have read the lash is quite extreme.
It is also not on the light side.

[RBW] Re: Nitto Albastache bars

2016-09-13 Thread Daniel Jackson
So Drew has got it figured out , in my opinion. I, too, have the
albastaches setup with these levers. The trick is to put the levers on the
side opposite for which they are labeled, thus positioning their elegant
curve downward. It works so dang well and I thought I was the only one who
figured this out...

There was a huge article (many pages long) in Bicycling (ya, I know) that was
the most in depth article I've seen about MIPS and gave a lot of the data
gathered by the organization that has done the bulk of testing. MIPS is an
attempt at a safety movement, not a marketing movement. I think it's amazing
that most MIPS helmets are only $20 more than regular helmets.

There are a number of articles of an objective nature online about MIPS if you
care to do your own research and reach a conclusion.

Yes, generally their tires were UNDERINFLATED by 25% to 50% of the 15% Tire
Drop Calculated Pressure, from my review of the posts.

I would recommend maintain your tire pressure at between 75% to 100% of the
15% Tire Drop Calculated (Berto value) pressure. This provides a
25% Safety Margin.

For example if the 15% Tire Drop Calculated pressure is 60 psig, then
maintain between 45 psig to 60 psig in the tire.

I think this gives enough room to experiment with lower pressures and
having a reasonable margin of safety.

Deacon:

Sorry, but that’s a great sentiment that makes no sense at all in the real
world.

If we can just “avoid” all the bad things that might happen to us, let’s all
cancel our health insurance (avoid getting sick!), our life insurance (avoid
dying too soon!), our car insurance (avoid getting hit by any other driver!),
etc. etc.

None of us are in total control of our lives. The multitude of factors beyond
our control that could cause us to either hit something or be hit are too
numerous to mention, but include inattentive drivers, mechanical failures, bad
pavement, etc. etc.

This is why most of us buy insurance, and it’s why I choose to wear a helmet. I
try my best to avoid impacts, but I also know that there’s a chance I won’t be
able to avoid every mishap.

This is *my* choice, which I’m not trying to foist on anyone.

[RBW] Re: Helmets... what do you like?

2016-09-13 Thread Deacon Patrick
I think we're talking at cross purposes, Ron. I'll try again, using your
crash as an example. Road rash is a vastly different thing than brain
injury. Your momentum was dissipated by the relatively slow deceleration of
the skid on the road, not by the helmet or the gloves. My point is this:
had you instead stopped very rapidly (as in hitting a car or tree), the
helmet would not have prevented the coup countrecoup of your brain slamming
back and forth inside your skull due to rapid deceleration. It can't. You
are spot on that helmets are good at preventing cuts and abrasions. Thus,
the conversation about brain injury and helmets and the emotional "do you
love your brain?" attempt at manipulating people into wearing a helmet as
if it will protect against the primary cause of brain injury in a bike
crash (coup contrecoup) is disingenuous and gives a false sense of safety.

With abandon,
Patrick

[RBW] Re: Putting a Clem on the rack of a bus?

2016-09-13 Thread LLM
Another thought...I saw a similar wheelbase spec online for one of the rack
types used in the city I live in. I called the office of the bus
service and was told that their biggest concern is that the bike not stick
out beyond the sides of the bus. If the rack style is the double wheel
well type, you may be out of luck; my 52 Clem barely fit in ours. If it is
the type that secures the front wheel in a deep wheel well with a
spring-loaded arm, and provides an open-ended platform for the rear wheel,
you might give it a try during an off-peak time. The rear wheel can rest
at the edge of the platform with the axle hanging out over thin air and
still be quite secure because the front wheel isn't going anywhere.

Me too and three on the ANT Truss. I loved it, but ended up trading it off
to get an actual Iver Johnson truss and other stuff.

What Ron Mc said, also based on dramatic personal experience, including a
helmet smashed at speed, and a head that felt pretty darn good.

Un-Rivvy/Bobby, but my preferred helmet is a Specialized S-Works. The only
helmet I've ever owned that disappears once it's put on, and it will soon
be replaced with same. I also embrace lycra, so there you have it.

Until helmets can address the basic physics of inertia and rapid
deceleration of the soft tissue brain inside the hard nut case, and the
resulting biology of the brain sheering neural connections because of the
coup countrecoup sloshing about like jello in a dropped bowl, helmets will

[RBW] Update and last call; take what's left for $20 + shipping. (FS: bags, Tire Savers, pedal medley, misc bits)

2016-09-13 Thread Patrick Moore
Tire savers, tire lever bag, Timbuktu bag, GONE.

*Take Seagull, LE Briefcase, and pedals for $20 plus shipping.*

The Seagull in particular is a very nice bag; better quality material
except for straps than my new Timbuktu. I just don't like the
cinch-at-shoulder strap design.

[RBW] Re: Helmets... what do you like?

2016-09-13 Thread 'Clayton' via RBW Owners Bunch
Marketing is amazing. It is used to squeeze as much money as possible from
my wallet, using as many psychological tricks as they can. In my humble
opinion, MIPS is marketing bullshirt'. From the brief research I have done
and the scalp injuries I have seen as a Paramedic, I have come to see MIPs
as snake oil. The 'slippage' or movement that the helmets market, is very
small, usually just a few millimeters.

Try this: Take all ten fingers and grab your scalp with your finger tips.
Without letting your fingers slip on your skin, move your scalp around. I
can move mine at least a couple of centimeters, in all directions. Your
scalp is a MIPS. It even uses lube (blood and interstitial fluid). The
helmet will slide a little on the surface of your scalp too, especially if
you have hair. Now that I have dumped on MIPS, I have to say that I am glad
the helmet manufacturers are finally making attempts to make helmets safer,
instead of just new colors and over stylized designs every year. Purely on
a safety basis, I think the hardshell skater type helmets are a better
solution, as they don't stick but slide. No protruding vent edges, wings,
etc. to get stuck on whatever you hit. I have yet to find one that checks
all my boxes however, as most are a little heavy, and hot. Currently I am
using a Giro Aspect and a Giro Reverb for road and town riding. They have a
roundish shape with no protruding "streamlining wings". Giro helmets fit my
head shape well.

I tried on my sons Troy Lee Designs A1 helmet and was in love with the
comfort and quality.

If I bought a new helmet, would I buy MIPS? Maybe. The prices on some
helmets are getting ridiculous. How can a bicycle helmet cost almost three
hundred dollars?

[RBW] Re: How Rivendells are received in your city ... (was: Rivvish Shop in Santa Barbara?)

2016-09-13 Thread Scott McLain
I was exited to get my new used Homer. I have a couple of neighbors that
are good friends and big bikers. When it finally came, my neighbor came
over and picked it up and said "it's kind of heavy, how much did you pay
for it?".

I live where I never see another Riv in the wild. I ride it every day to
work. I don't know that anyone knows what it is or appreciates it like I
do. But I love it more and more with every ride.

My wife and I were in San Francisco last week and took our Riv's. I got a
few compliments there and saw a few other Riv's in the wild. The Homer and
Sam are the perfect bikes for the city. The funnest trip we have had. I
highly recommend the Street's of San Francisco guided bike tour.

[RBW] Putting a Clem on the rack of a bus?

[RBW] Re: Helmets... what do you like?

2016-09-13 Thread Marc Irwin

I've come to like the Bern Allston helmet a lot. It has a harder shell
than most and a visor without weighing more than a roadie helmet. One
thing I heard mentioned in a discussion about MIPS systems, one person
noted that any helmet will slide on the head and thus provide some
rotational protection. Obviously, it't not as predictable as a built in
feature, but it's something I hadn't thought of before.

[RBW] Putting a Clem on the rack of a bus?

Has anybody tried putting a Clem on one of the bike racks of a public

I should check too see if they list a maximum wheelbase for the racks, but
wondered if anyone had already tried it.

Re: [RBW] Re: tire pressures

2016-09-13 Thread Ron Mc
on the last tire pressure thread, one of the posters plugged everybody's
replies back into the Berto graphs and found out we were all but a couple
riding within a narrow error window on those graphs - we have naturally
gravitated there. The people who were exceptionally low also reported
wrecks. The people who were exceptionally high? Well, I guess they get
short tire life, ride rough and bounce.

Put the helmet in the top rack of empty dish washer machine and run it. Got my
helmet and straps amazingly clean.

[RBW] Re: Bars for Climbing

2016-09-13 Thread Garth
This is quite impossible to say as what feels "right" to one does not to
another. Hand and body positioning have as much if not more to do with the
fit of the bike , your own distinct sense of being centered in the bike,
than the bar. The bar also requires a stem , both selections vital in the
fine tuning of bike feel as a *whole. *Notice how a bike that just feels
"right" is one you don't even think about, you are free from any sense of
"it" being apart from you, as if you are "riding an object". Rather, you
find yourself moving effortlessly and without explanation or thought of
one, not unlike flying effortlessly where everything is just one whole
experience. Time and distance and space have no meaning here :)

If this seems just too "far out" and far fetched , I can only say it is
any sense of limitation, isolation and separation that is what makes no
sense. How can one be, and that being be limited, separated from itself ?
That's double talk, either you are, or you are not , period, infinitum. If
you are here, you be :)

Re: [RBW] Helmets... what do you like?

2016-09-13 Thread Surlyprof
This got me wondering about what would degrade over time and why. All I
could think of is the EPS foam (most of the helmet), the outside shell
(usually thermoformed PET or polyethylene terephthalate) and adhesive or
tape that binds them together. I've seen the shell separate from taped
helmets. PET is pretty durable but it is susceptible to UV. EPS is pretty
inert and durable over time as well, usually susceptible to only UV and
hydrocarbons
(http://buildblock.com/asked-answered-what-is-the-expected-lifetime-of-the-expanded-polystyrene-eps-foam/).

All that considered, I would assume that they would degrade slightly over
time the more time it spends outside in the sun. Looking around for a
video I once saw where they used a 5-axis CNC for milling out the vent
holes on helmets I found this which I thought was mildly
entertaining: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V7WSxzbNDiE It did get me
wondering how they make those MIPS helmets, though

Now if I could just figure out how to clean those grungy straps!

[RBW] New threadless bullmoose bar

2016-09-13 Thread Eric Karnes
FYI:

For anyone with a mid-nineties mountain bike project, Velo Orange just
started stocking this new Nitto bullmoose variation:

http://store.velo-orange.com/index.php/b903-bullmoose-bar-by-nitto-silver.html

It's an absolute beauty! If I still had my old Litespeed, I'd snatch one up!

[RBW] Re: Bars for Climbing

2016-09-13 Thread Eric Karnes
I haven't ridden the Choco-Moose as it's a bit too wide for my tastes (and
narrow shoulders). But I use a VO Porteur bar, which is (kind of) a
narrower version. They share a similar forward position, which when
wrapped, I find fantastic for climbing. They remind me of gripping the
bar-ends on my old mountain bike. Also a great position for stretched-out
cruising on the flats.
