Following up on the recent discussion about film processing, I wonder if anyone
has advice on mail-in processing labs. I’ve used TheDarkroom.com

Anybody using a different lab that you would recommend?

Re: [RBW] Re: What do Rivendell Riders use for floor pumps?

2018-10-01 Thread 'Eric Norris' via RBW Owners Bunch
Go-to pump is a Zefal HP Husky, but I also have a classic Silca. I would still
be using the Silca that I bought back in the 1980s if it hadn’t been
accidentally left by the side of the road at a race out in the country a couple
of years ago.

Silcas have the advantage of being reparable. You can buy the leather plunger
if it wears out (or just take it out and put a little grease on it in most
cases), and the hose/chuck assembly is easily available. Take care of a
Silca—and don’t lose it—and it will last forever.

[RBW] Help with fenders

2018-10-01 Thread nemomom123
I just bought a set of SIMWORKS Honjo 62mm fenders for my Joe Appaloosa -
they did not come with any instructions and the parts tags were in
Japanese. While I have watched one (the only one I could find) video
regarding the installation which looks pretty extensive, I do have some
questions if someone has experience with these. Here goes . . .

1. Drilling the tiny holes for the hardware in aluminum - does that require
a special bit? and what would be the best approach to get a clean drill
hole result?
2. I have tektro cantilever brakes CR720 on the bike and the brake cable
tip rubs on the fender when I put it over the wheel. I don't have much room
to cut shorter - and really am
new to the cantilever brake system even though i recently replaced the
cable hardware as it had rusted. I can lengthen the arch wire so that the
brake cable wire may go higher - not sure but wanted to ask before I tore
it apart again.
3. I'm also looking at the Paul brakes as a replacement but couldn't find
any substantive video on whether these would be ok with the fenders - the
cantilever touring brakes - any thoughts on this as well would be
appreciated.

Guess that's it - hope this works in getting out there. Thanks, D

[RBW] Heard my first "Hey, nice Riv!" today. Felt chuffed

2018-10-01 Thread LeRoy
I've only had my Clem Smith Jr since late spring of this year and have put
about 750 miles on it. Rivendells of any sort are thin on the ground in my
Midwestern home. Most of the guys I ride with are only vaguely aware of the
brand. They do recognize my bike as an interesting curiosity. It's
something that's at variance with the generally mountain bike-oriented
bikes they own. So I've been pedaling along and simply enjoying the ride.
Thus it was with a bit of personal pleasure that I heard another rider call
out, *"Hey, nice Riv!"* as he cycled past this morning. I felt pretty
chuffed, in a private sort of way, that a stranger recognized the bike and
called it out. Did I need the "validation?" Well, maybe. Whatever. I must
say that it was nice to hear. When was your first such experience?

[RBW] Re: Ahearne+Map Comfort... Also, WTB

2018-10-01 Thread cam starnes
Always something else, indeed, Tom. Have 46c Noodles perched on a Dirt Drop on
the Sam currently. It feels great, so my question is more related to the
“something else” nature of the Ahearne+Map bar, which is one I’ve never tried
and have long been curious about. Have ridden Alba, Bosco, Moustache,
Albastache, numerous road drops, riser bar, track drops, flipped/chopped track
drops... alll had their strengths and weaknesses, of course. With the ‘stache
bars I just could never get used to leaning forward to brake - always felt
backwards to me. Really like Albatross bars, generally, because of the range of
hand positions and the range of body positioning that goes with them. All told,
I’d probably swap cockpits monthly if it weren’t such a pain, just for the sake
of variety. Much of my riding is commuting and/or rides of 20 miles or less, I
would just hate to commit the expense and work of even trying Ahearne bars just
to scratch an itch if feedback is that those are strictly short-distance bars.
Because occasionally I like to ride a bit further. Don’t fix what ain’t broken,
you might say. Ah, but “broken” is a relative term sometimes.

[RBW] Re: Film Processing

I used to use The Darkroom when their physical location was right by my
work. I generally drop my film off at Jeremiah's Photo Corner, and they
send it out to a place in SF. It's fun to chat with a human about photo
stuff, and Jeremiah is also a bike nerd.

I recently bought the chemicals, and started developing film again, and I'm
figuring out how to scan negatives in a reasonable way.

Honjo fenders are terrific, but installation can be challenging. Get the

For tools and drilling in aluminum, here's Ocean Air
Cycles: http://oceanaircycles.com/2014/01/26/holes-in-metal-fenders/

Jitensha and Velo Orange have decent instructions, if you have some
familiarity with fender installation.
https://www.jitensha.com/eng/honjinstl.html
https://velo-orange.blogspot.com/2009/03/fender-mounting-instructions.html

There's also BQ's fender installation instructions, which you'd need to
purchase from BQ.

For Q2, do you mean [straddle] cable hanger rubs on the fender? On my 48-cm
Hunqapillar, there was little room between the rear brake cable hanger and
fender. The straddle cable hanger was set almost to touch the fender in
order to have any room for brake actuation. If you have room, then you can
raise the straddle hanger. The brake feel+performance might change, but
it's the rear wheel, so probably doesn't matter that much. (YMMV!)

For Q3, Paul touring canti brakes and Paul Neo-retros would work fine with
fenders.

Good luck!

[RBW] Re: Film Processing

2018-10-01 Thread 'jeffrey kane' via RBW Owners Bunch
I run a lab in NYC:

LTI-Lightside (www.lti-lightside.com)

We run a lot of C-41 and B+W film, daily -- we no longer handle E-6,
though. I've looked through the Darkroom.com site and give them a thumbs up
for going after the mail-in market. I think the Riv guys use them and I'm
guessing they do a good job -- and their prices are good, too. I'm not
normally in the habit of praising my competitors (but we're really not in
the same market) -- and I haven't used their services so can't actually say
one way or the other but my industry savvy hunch is that they're probably a
safe-bet and unless you're seeing results that you don't like and can
attribute it to them. Again, I'd guess that they're probably one of the
better film processing options out there at this time.

That said -- being a long time reader of this list (and film shooting bike
nerd)) and knowing that many of you are into photography it's always nagged
at the back of my mind that I wish I could offer you all services somehow.
I'd be happy to create discount codes for RGB Owners Bunch readers any time
(though we don't have those fancy pre-paid mailers like the darkroom.com).
Please feel free to take a look through our site and notice that all our
prices are published online, we offer multiple upload to print options and
have a near ten year deep project archive link detailing our customers work
in both fine-art and commercial & advertising categories ...

We also have an instagram account (@lti-lightside) and count none other
than UltraRomance himself as our sole "influencer" ... ha.

Feel free to reach out to me personally if you're interested in anything --
and like I said, I'd be happy to offer up some discounts for like-minded
bikers

My favorite time was when I was riding my Hunq home from work in Brooklyn
and a guy pulled up next to me at a stop light riding a custom Johnny
Coast, the first Coast I had seen in the wild!

My favorite time I saw another Riv while I wasn't riding one was when I was
driving out of Zion National Park enjoying the spectacular scenery, when
all of the sudden there's a guy riding down the road with a Sam Hillborne
touring rig. I could tell what it was instantly as soon as I saw the seat
stays from the rear. Had to yell "NICE BIKE MAN!!"

[RBW] Kid Clemmin' & The Morally Indignant Motorist

2018-10-01 Thread Coal Bee Rye Anne
Yesterday I had a pleasant day with the family, with the exception of
having the pleasure of being heckled/scolded/yelled at for the first time
in years while riding a bicycle in public... while riding with our 14month
old son... because I was riding with my 14month old son.

We decided to take our son apple picking at a nearby orchard only 2 miles
away. The majority of the route cuts through a network of parks and
multiuse trails in preserved farmland/meadows but does require some
pavement (along two different 2 lane roads.) Naturally, being cyclists and
having bikes and gear suitable for carrying a few extra pounds of flesh and
produce we decided to keep the car parked for the day and take the scenic
route and make an afternoon of it considering the close proximity, familiar
route, and favorable weather.

The off pavement portion is on multiuse paths to which we directly connect
through a park at the back of our neighborhood. Part of the trail runs
parallel to one of the paved roads we'll need to double-back on to ride
for 1000 to 2000ft before turning onto the intersecting road on
which the orchard is located a mile further down.

En route to the farm, during that first 1000-2000ft straight paved section,
is where we encountered the indignant motorist. The road is an old 2-lane
farm road and admittedly not ideal for cycling with an insufficient
shoulder and drainage ditches on either side, but not very heavily
trafficked. We entered the road with a right hand turn at the
nearest crossing, my son and I out front with my wife trailing a couple
hundred feet or so behind. As we were nearing the left turn I glance back
and see a vehicle approaching from a slight distance back behind my
wife but with lots of space still between us (and the vehicle) and the
intersection almost upon us I deliberately signal our turn and begin to
take the lane for the final 50yds or so. As we complete our turn and begin
to head into the last mile on the even less trafficked 2 lane
residential/rural road the driver proceeds to yell "...something something
something... with an f#$%!ng child you f#$%!ng a-hole!" just as he floors
the gas to accelerate and regain his desired mph.

There was nothing confrontational about the situation otherwise... we were
never even close enough to make eye contact, the driver never attempted to
pass aggressively or do anything to otherwise put us in harms way, nor did
I make any abrupt or sudden movements, etc. This was the first vehicle to
encounter us heading in the same direction for the entire short stretch and
I made what I felt was the safest and most reasonable decision after
surveying our surroundings by taking the lane and swiftly turning off the
busier of the two roads while we had the space and timing to safely do so.

Our child's safety is something we certainly do not take lightly. I could
sympathize with concern over the general element of risk of cycling on
today's roads, and yes, this same risk clearly extends to my child
passenger but apparently this person was so deeply offended enough by our
actions of simply cycling with a toddler that they felt the need to erupt
into an outburst of anger as they sped past... the irony of which is that
in their final moment within our limited interaction they did nothing more
than demonstrate the exact kind of driving behavior that puts all
cyclists/pedestrians/motorists at risk (distracted/aggressive/etc.) and
would jeopardize the safety of the child they seemed so concerned about in
the first place.

It could be that I'm a little overly sensitive still being a new parent,
and new to family cycling, and maybe the amount of time that's lapsed
between prior conflicts with motorists has re-sensitized me to an extent
(several years ago I'd expect nothing less from most drivers, just sans the
"child" part) but I've had this brief moment nagging me a bit this morning
and curious to know what others have experienced in terms of cycling with
kids and overly opinionated motorists, etc.?

I recall reading of others who bike often with children, or incorporate it
much more into daily life... sometimes dropping off and picking up kids at
school, etc. Many of our local roads are less than desirable (same reasons
noted above: insufficient shoulders, mostly) and many I've already ruled
out for riding with our son and until this weekend all rides have been
contained almost exclusively to our local park/trail system and rides into
our small downtown (1 mile down from our development on low traffic
residential roads.)

I'm genuinely curious, how does everyone else evaluate their child/no child
routes? Have you been similarly lectured by non-cyclists and has it been a
recurring theme? I already have several non-cyclists in my family
who've previously considered me crazy for cycling on roads with motorized
vehicles long before our son arrived. I'm very conscientious about
exposing him to un

[RBW] Re: Kid Clemmin' & The Morally Indignant Motorist

2018-10-01 Thread Kevin Mulcahy
My 4.5 year old son rides on the back of our cargo bike to/from daycare,
about 4 miles each way. Madison is a great place to ride a bike, and we
have a really nice route along some scenic and low-traffic streets. Last
week, a motorist caught up to us about a block after we rolled through an
unoccupied 4 way stop at the end of a little hill. We always roll through
this intersection; everyone does. Well, so this guy pulls up next to us and
and just screams, "YOU'RE SETTING A BAD EXAMPLE FOR YOUR KID!" and then
speeds off.

Yeah, so afterwards me and my son had a pretty good conversation about how
to appropriately display your emotions. As a four year old, that's a lesson
he's heard before, but I think it was nice (in a way) for him to see how
ugly it can be. My son also drew a connection with a book he was reading
about Star Wars and how Yoda teaches about how fear and anger lead to the
dark side. So... I think he got it. :)

That all being said. We're lucking enough to have a nice route, but I
really try to avoid sketchy/ high traffic roads, even ones with bike lanes.
It just kinda kills the vibe. We've also have had many good interactions
with motorists, even back when he was in a trailer. Someone once yelled at
me (which was weird) something like, "Your trailer is really visable, I
love the lights! You're a great dad!" That really made my day!

Shoji's links are spot on -- I'd say grab a coffee (or a beer) and read
through them. Getting your hands on the JP Weigel / BQ article would be
very helpful as well.

My 2 cents: I'd suggest a sharp awl as opposed to drilling. Alu fenders are
super soft and a small round file will remove the burr from the awl easily
enough.

Ugh…sorry you had to experience that, but it’s all over.

im not much of a poster here these days, but my now 16 year old boy* spent
10 years on the back of our kid adapted tandem(s) // we live in a rural
part of Western Mass and i was glad at all the stupidity hurled in our
direction, as well as the genuinely lovely things and gestures people made
when they’d see us riding, both here and when we’d take the tandem into NYC.

I taught my boy that i believe in non-violence but that i make exceptions
[yes i’m a [benign] (cycling) sociopath who likes parentheses). And
sometimes i modeled less than stellar behavior back at the yellers. But i
have no regrets. It’s part of being a parent.

It was a learning opportunity for both of us, i was able to say ‘let’s come
up with some good responses that run the gamut’ and also to explain that we
could get killed at any minute, any time, not just from hostile jerks. And
i taught him how to use a mirror, how to say peculiar things, how to say
nothing, how to wave inappropriately as if deranged [that’s one of the best
strategies, a super enthusiastic wave, as if it’s your long lost grandpa in
the car]. And also, using the mirror, the excellent Grant P strategy of
moving a little awkwardly as they come up behind you, so they give you a
slightly wider berth.

I rode my kid on the back of a tandem every day for many years when he was
especially young, and in addition to being hassled by drivers, was hassled
by cops a few times.

It became a math lesson too, what % of drivers were fine VS % that hassled
us, and that was a way to de-escalate for us.

And we practiced a few times emergency ditching, crashing the tandem, etc.

So mostly it was great opportunity to show not tell, and the unmediated kid
raising time on the bike was and is the best time we have together. Go
forth and ride w your kiddos, and the best piece of safety equip i have is
a mirror. Oh, and I like a stainless steel bottle. Just in case.

* he now rides a Bruce Gordon barn find which was too big for me /and is
sometimes the stoker on the back of our Riv tandem wherein he tries to
break the speed limit [he rows crew, does MMA, and builds stone walls; is
super strong]

That Outer Shell is a pretty nifty bag! Basically just what I'm looking

[RBW] Re: handlebar/stem bags - what do people like?

2018-10-01 Thread Neil Doran
Lotsa good ideas here, as usual. Thanks Bunch!

I picked up a Revelate feedbag yesterday at my local REI and immediately
did not like it...my knee hits it when I stand to pedal. Plus my camera
does not fit, so no go.

I am a dedicated Mark's rack and basket guy (and I load it heavy, ha!).
I've been down the rando bag route, liked it for awhile, but I find Wald
basket plus shopsack is just so versatile.

I found my camera does *just* fit into my Swift bar bag. That spot is kinda
crowded with SIS cables and the aforementioned basket, but it does hold the
camera well. Just not super easy to pull out.

I'll likely stick with what I got, or figure out some sort of padded insert
that can live in my basket.

It is...a monster. I’m so happy to have a bike that I can truly weird out. Some
of the parts, I’m realizing, are actually too classy, and probably should be
replaced by weirder ones. I’ve been restrained by good taste with every other
bike. I want this to be a Rivendell unhinged.

Re: [RBW] Re: Help with fenders

2018-10-01 Thread Steve Palincsar
Dilling holes is easy.  Aluminum is soft, and you can finish the hole
off with a rat tail file.  It helps to start it with a punch.  In any
event you don't see the hole when it's all assembled so no need to get
obsessive about it.  Just make absolutely positively 100% sure don't
even think about trying to shortcut the process to only do one set of
holes at a time.  Mark, drill mount, mark the next set, dismount, drill,
remount.  You cannot mark all the holes at once, because mounting the
first hole changes the alignment and your next hole is going to end up
in the wrong place.  That's the chief reason why it takes a long time
and requires huge amounts of patience.  That, and of course because it's
easy to screw up and ruin an expensive fender.  Haste truly makes waste
here.

Also under no circumstances ever try to pull the fender into shape by
means of tension on the fender stays.  That works with plastic fenders,
but it's the kiss of death with metal ones.  You adjust the fender line
by squeezing the edges of the fender together or spreading them apart.
Stressing the fender by means of tension on the stays ends up causing
cracking.

Jitensha and Velo Orange have decent instructions, if you have some
familiarity with fender installation.

https://www.jitensha.com/eng/honjinstl.html
https://velo-orange.blogspot.com/2009/03/fender-mounting-instructions.html

There's also BQ's fender installation instructions, which you'd need
to purchase from BQ.

For Q2, do you mean [straddle] cable hanger rubs on the fender? On my
48-cm Hunqapillar, there was little room between the rear brake cable
hanger and fender. The straddle cable hanger was set almost to touch
the fender in order to have any room for brake actuation. If you have
room, then you can raise the straddle hanger. The brake
feel+performance might change, but it's the rear wheel, so probably
doesn't matter that much. (YMMV!)

For Q3, Paul touring canti brakes and Paul Neo-retros would work fine
with fenders.

Good luck!

I just bought a set of SIMWORKS Honjo 62mm fenders for my Joe

could find) video regarding the installation which looks pretty
extensive, I do have some questions if someone has experience with
these. Here goes . . .

1. Drilling the tiny holes for the hardware in aluminum - does
that require a special bit? and what would be the best approach to
get a clean drill hole result?
2. I have tektro cantilever brakes CR720 on the bike and the brake
cable tip rubs on the fender when I put it over the wheel. I don't
have much room to cut shorter - and really am
new to the cantilever brake system even though i recently replaced
the cable hardware as it had rusted. I can lengthen the arch wire
so that the brake cable wire may go higher - not sure but wanted
to ask before I tore it apart again.
3. I'm also looking at the Paul brakes as a replacement but
couldn't find any substantive video on whether these would be ok
with the fenders - the cantilever touring brakes - any thoughts on
this as well would be appreciated.

Guess that's it - hope this works in getting out there. Thanks, D
