Re: [RBW] Re: Platypus Presale - who are the lucky new owners?

2024-09-30 Thread Jeff McCartney
Hi everyone!

I was lucky enough to snag a Mustard 60cm Platypus :)

I'm also new to the group, but have been lurking for a while obsessively
consuming Platypus conversations, especially all the excellent posts from
Leah! I am a long time fan of Rivendell and have built up several 80's MTB
frames in a Riv style over the last 12 years. I finally got my first real
Rivendell in the form of a used Clem L a few months ago. Immediately after
riding that for the first time I decided to buy a new Platypus from the
next batch to replace my Riv'ish '83 Stumpjumper shopping/utility bike
build. There was just something extra magical about the Clem that I have
not captured in any of my builds and I want more of that magic!

I'll be sure to update when I get my hands on the new Platypus, and thank
you all for being an awesome group of people and an amazing resource!

Re: [RBW] Grant's Mountain 8-26-24

2024-09-01 Thread Jeff B
I figured that was the case. I'm not sure how much trust I would put in
riding on the shoulder there, having seen many shenanigans by drivers along
680. However you are a testament to the fact that it's possible. My hope
is that there is a "deer path" worn by people bypassing the construction in
the fields to the west of the road, but even that seems risky because
security seems to be tight in the construction zone.

It is a huge shame that they don't have an area at least open for
pedestrians and cyclists through that area. It effectively cuts off that
segment of people from getting between Cordelia and Benicia without taking
a detour through north Vallejo (12 vs 18 miles). News reports even say
construction might not start for a few months into 2025.

Thanks for the info,
Jeff B

Re: [RBW] Re: Ro-Deux-No build notes New Bike Day

2024-08-27 Thread Jeff B
Very nicely done Bill. Since reading Will's email a while back about
potentially making the bike a 5 speed, I was thinking I would take on that
task. Now I might not have to, ha.
My thought was that I could get a narrower Q-factor and a small range of
useable gears. Almost like a classic randonneur bike. Although it is a
Rivendell so it would be a little heavier than a spry classic rando.

Looking for a 54cm Roadini frameset in Mermaid green. If you’ve got one
complete you’re looking to unload (I already connected with Ahmed) feel
free to reach out, though I really am just looking for the frameset.

Re: [RBW] Re: Jobst Brandt thought experiment: What would he ride today?

2023-02-22 Thread Jeff B
As an aside to what modern bike Jobst might ride, here are some photos of
Jobst's bike at the US Bicycling Hall of Fame in Davis, CA. I'm not sure if
this was his final or second to last bike. I don't know if it is still
there and having it hanging from the ceiling makes it hard to photograph
and inspect but still very cool to see in person.

Re: [RBW] Re: Selle Anatomica carbon rails with Nitto S65 seatpost?

I have an S65 and have used it on two different Brooks saddles and when
cranked down so the saddles don't slip there are indentations in the clamp
areas on the seat rails. I would think with a carbon fiber rail this would
not be a good thing. this was typed on 012123 but I am not accepted to the

[RBW] Re: NBOD: New Bike Ordered Day! The mythical canti-Roa!

2022-04-05 Thread Jeff B
Bill,

That sounds like an awesome bike! I've been thinking that if I could get
Roadeo tubing on a frame like the Roadini with long chain stays and cant or
center pull studs that would be a perfect bike for me. All the other
options sound great too.
I look forward to seeing it built up.

Re: [RBW] Roadini heavy?

2022-01-30 Thread Jeff B

I own a Roadini that I bought from the other Joe who replied in the thread.

I wouldn't consider my Roadini heavy, for what it is. I've certainly built
lighter bikes for customers including an S-Works Utralight Tarmac, which
tipped the scale just under 13lbs. I ride a 54 Roadini at 5'11" but always
thought it would be fun to ty a 57.

The general weight of most club ride bikes (specialized tarmac, Roubaix,
venge, cervelo s & r series, etc) I've weighed come in at 16.75lbs WITHOUT
saddle bags or bottles.
Some of those riders use a saddlebag but many put their flat kit, phone,
arm warmers, etc in their jersey pocket. I think of it though that I'm
riding the horse so why should the lumber be on my back so, I use a Swift
Industries handlebar bag which can carry ample supplies.
My Roadini comes in at 25lbs with 2 tubes, a multi-tool, tire lever & mini
pump. I routinely carry my wallet & phone in there too along with house/car
keys, sunglasses, snacks and anything else that might be helpful on a ride.

Like Johnny said, you can make a bike feel pretty light with a good wheel
set and ironically the club riders who add aero wheels to their bike end up
adding an extra few pounds because there is simply more material there. I
just use excellent aluminum wheels (HED Belgium with DT Swiss 240 hubs) to
keep the weight down and keep the bike feeling spry. I am also geared down
compared to most road bikes.

My 11 speed setup is a 14-30 cassette with 44/28 chainrings. This gives me
a low gear inch of 25.5 and a high of 86.1 on 35mm tires. This came to be
from watching people's cassettes who's gearing was the standard 11-28,
50/34. They were always in the 50 tooth chainring but cross chained up in
the19 or 21 tooth in the rear so they could spin the cadence fast enough. I
find that my gearing allows me to spin pretty fast on the Roadini, which
makes the bike feel lively to me. I've never needed the 100+ gear inches
that usually comes with the standard 11 speed road bike set up but a do
really appreciate having a .933:1 (sub1:1) gear ratio for climbing so again
I can spin seated up a hill while most are grinding away out of the saddle
at 10 rpm.

Like Karl said, I've also hit close to 50mph on a decent to Estes Park CO
and the bike felt so stable it's miraculous. Some of the other guys,
especially the one riding a Venge with aero wheels, were getting blown all
over the road because the tall profile carbon frame & wheels were like a
sail catching the wind. Maybe because the Roadini had more weight it was
more planted and glued to the road so I was able to concentrate on the ride
& not fighting the bike to stay straight. I found the steering to be really
easy on that ride too.

To me it really is about having a bike that offers so much more from the
normal club racer. The geometry, sloping top tube, ability for wide tires,
quill stem to adjust handlebar height throughout the day without silly
steer tube extenders, braze ons for simple racks, ability to run multiple
gear configurations (sti or downtube shifters), larger tire ability
(Largest I've used is 38mm) and a bike that will last forever means I
probably won't get rid of this frame for a long time. However, I'm nt sure
I'd get the latest batch with the longer reach calipers. A few people I
know with those longer calipers say they lack the power needed & I think
there have been a few instances in BQ where Jan found them substandard. I
have no experience with them though so I cannot confirm.

If I did want to expand on my Roadini though and get something lighter, I
would look at David Kirk. He built himself, what he calls, a Montana Road
Bike which is probably closer to a Roadeo in terms of geo and non threaded
steer but his craftsmanship is beautiful & I'm sure it weighs loads less
being made from stainless tubes fillet brazed. He has an instagram post
from Dec 3, 2021 about that bike which really sums up what I think a road
bike should be.

And lastly, If you are looking for Roadini inspiration with alternate bars,
just google image search for "bluelug roadini". There will be a few photos
of them with albatross, mustache and even chocomoose bars.

[RBW] Re: Roadini Tires: Anyone running 38s?

2021-06-17 Thread Jeff B
Rivendell did state that the 2020 had more clearance. Mine is the 1st
generation but will still fit 38mm tires.
I meant that I need to instal the tire deflated to get it past the brake
shoes even with the caliper open.
Also, some orange frames from the 1st batch apparently had the brake bridge
welded too high which allowed bigger tires but almost made it so you would
have to use a long reach caliper instead of a standard.

[RBW] FS: Drivetrain, brakes, misc

2021-01-23 Thread Jeff B
Some items for sale. Buyer will cover the PayPal fees and shipping. Most of
the small items should be able to fit in USPS flat rate packaging which
starts at $8ish I believe for an envelope. I will probably add more items
later too. Thanks for looking and contact me off list please (private
message).
Photos here: RBW For Sale

*BRAKES*
-*Avid Shorty 6 Canitlevers $40*, KoolStop pads have good amount of life
left in them. Will come with regular mounting hardware (not rack bolts)
stadle cable and hanger.

*-Tektro 521A FRONT $20*, single caliper, 47-57mm reach, no pads, recessed
nut.

-*Short Pull brake lever set $10*, No barrel adjuster on the lever because
you would have one on your road caliper or at a housing stop for
cantilevers. One reach adjust screw missing.

-*Long Pull brake levers $10*, polished

-*Long Pull brake levers $10*, black (no Photos in album can get you some)

-*Interrupter levers $10*

*Drivetrain*

-*Shimano 105 RD-1056 $15* pretty scratched up but works great. Pulleys are
newer. I do not have the original cable anchor nut (which was an M5 Allen)
so I got a washer and corresponding M5 nut that do the job of securing the
cable.

*-Sunrace R80 8spd Front Derailleur $15* double chainring, 56-50 large ring
with 16t capacity. Band mounting for 31.8 but has a shim for 28.6

*Shimano FC-1056 105 cranks $25* 175 arm length, 53/39 chainrings. Pretty
scratched up but I don't think they have any problem gouges. Rings look
pretty beat but I never had a chain skip, could probably stand to be
replaced. 130BCD.

*MISC*

*Nitto Promenade B603 bar $15 *Will not fit bar end shifters but will take
thumbies or trigger shifters. (22.2 grip area), Clamp Dia: 25.4mm, Rise:
2.44" (62mm), Width: 18.9" (480mm), Sweep: 75 deg, Weight: 360g

*Profile design threaded to threadless convertor $10* 22.2 to 28.58 (1" to
1.125")

Re: [RBW] 60cm Orange Cheviot gathering dust anywhere?

2020-08-05 Thread 'Jeff Martin' via RBW Owners Bunch
Hi Jon,
It's a beautiful bike - and you've set it up pretty much as I would expect to
do myself (minus Electric). I'm in Arlington, VA - just outside DC.
With the headset, bottom bracket and perhaps the seatpost if you would be
willing to toss it in, I would do $650 plus shipping as you prefer. I only
know of bike flights via the Bunch; I think I've generally seen ~$150, is that
correct or reasonably close?
And, Jon, nobody ever mistook me for a skilled negotiator, so let me be clear:
I want this deal. The seatpost request is just that.
What's next?
Best,
Jeff

[RBW] Atlantis on Tahoe singletrack

2020-08-03 Thread Jeff B
That looks like an excellent ride! At least on a bike like the Atlantis you are
able to enjoy the scenery as well instead of it flying by.

I'm wanting to do the same on my Atlantis or vintage stumpjumer. Is it possible
to get more detailed information of your route or point in a good direction of
where to look for routes?

2020-07-19 Thread Jeff B
Not to talk off the topic of chain lubing but, Patrick your rear derailleur
cable is wrapped under the kickstand plate. Not sure if it makes any
difference to you but it could lead to the cable breaking prematurely or
the rear Der being perpetually out of adjustment. Is there room for the
cable to ride smoothly next to the plate or is a that a GUS quirk?

2020-07-19 Thread Jeff B
As I live in Davis, I should have brought my Quickbeam out and rode about a
1/4 mile behind you HA!

It is a nice ride out to Winters but can get boring sometimes so I've
experimented with some creative routes through farm field access roads. So
far no problems but luck can only take you so far.

Your bike looks great too.

[RBW] Craigslist score -- 59cm Roadeo

2020-07-07 Thread Jeff B
I had been eyeing this as well. Decided against it because 59 was a touch too
large for me but could have been a fun experiment using a stubby Crust/Nitto
stem. I also wanted to get centerpull posts brazed on but it would have messed
up the surrounding paint & the bike just looks too good already.
Hope you get to enjoy it!

[RBW] Re: What shade of orange?

2020-06-26 Thread Jeff B
I'm not a painting expert but have listened to many conversations about
automotive paint matching.

I believe the true final color would also depend on your, or your painters,
primer of choice. A grey primer will probably be closest to the true color,
but slightly muted and might require a few coats for good coverage. To
really have the paint pop and not use so many coats you could use white
primer.

PPG 2764 (which is Flame Red as described by Corvette marketing) paired
with a white primer can produce a really vivid color without having to buy
a brighter orange which might be leaning towards a highlighter shade.

[RBW] Re: Tubulars on Rivendells

2020-04-25 Thread Jeff B
I was actually contemplating the same thing for my Roadini since Rene Herse
is selling FMBs now.

A few years ago my Specialized representative was trying so hard to unload
a set of CLX60 tubular wheels with tires mounted already and I should have
bought them for price he was going for, it was amazingly low but I couldn't
be bothered because my tubeless set up was going great, and still is.

I still might toy with the idea, especially using some older MAVICs like
you Bill.

Specialized still has stock of the S-Works Turbo Cotton Hell of the North
(Paris-Roubaix) tire that is listed as a 28mm (they might have had a 30mm
at some point).

Either way your bike looks great!

It does seem like a great deal if nothing fishy is going on. Agreed that it
could be an estate item, fairly new for that though.

It could be like what car guys do when the wife wants them to sell the project
car, mis-spell everything hoping that no one finds the ad so they can say that
no one wanted to buy it.

[RBW] Re: 1x11 on a Roadini?

2019-11-27 Thread Jeff B
I have a Specialized Sequoia with 1x11 but my Roadini is 2x11.

My Roadini has a gear inch spread of 29.1" to 114" on 700/32 with a 46/30 &
11/28.

The Sequoia has a gear inch spread of 26.9" to 103" on 650B/47 with a 42 &
11/42.

They both use SRAM Force and feel great. I really dig the simplicity of 1x
but find myself using only a small section of the cassette, which might
promote accelerated wear. I never really spin out though and always can
climb hills if needed. I really never use the 46/11 on my Roadini unless
I'm really going downhill so I find that the spread is a little more
useable on the Sequoia. with a 42t chainring. I don't mind the gaps in the
cassette either, you use your legs more to power through small hills and
spend less time shifting. For centuries and light rondo it would be perfect.

If you wanted to play around and can get to Walnut Creek, Harry's Roadini
has SRAM Force 1x on it, although the bike is quite large (57 or 61)

[RBW] For sale - Nitto 58cm aluminum Bosco bars - like new

2019-10-22 Thread jeff perry
I’ve been on the merry-go-round with handlebars. I started with albatross,
went to these Boscos, switched to Bosco moose, went back to these Boscos, and
now I’m sticking with Albatross! These have been ridden on 10 rides at most
and look like new. I paid $97 for them in March. They are nice bars, but I
prefer albatross. Also, for all interested in these it’s really important that
you use carbon fiber friction paste in the stem connection otherwise they can
slip, like they did for me before someone in this group enlightened me. With
the paste they are rock solid.

Selling for $65 plus shipping. Please send me a private note if you are
interested. They are boxed up and ready to ship.

[RBW] For Sale - Brooks B68 Aged saddle (new in box, never mounted)

2019-10-22 Thread jeff perry
Hi All,

I'm selling a brand new Brooks B68 saddle in the "aged" finish. It's never
been mounted and is as-new. Comes in original packaging and with the nylon
rain cover. I have two of these already, so having a spare seems a little
ridiculous, so I'm thinning the herd. For those unfamiliar with this
saddle, it's the same as a sprung B67, just without the springs, plus it
has lacing to keep the saddle from sagging...a huge improvement for these
saddles. It's my favorite saddle of all by far, and they haven't been
produced for years now. It might be the last new one you'll ever find.
I'm selling for $190 plus shipping. And before anyone screams at me for
gouging, that's less than I paid for it! Serious inquiries only please.
Thanks.

Jeff

[RBW] Issues with slipping bosco bars?

2019-10-19 Thread jeff perry
Hey, just wanted to give an update. I applied some carbon seatpost goop in
there and miraculously it no longer slips! I was sceptical, but it really
works. Thanks to all who gave the tip. As it is, I still prefer my albatross
bars, so I will probably be unloading these bars in the near future. Let me
know it you’re interested in them. 58cm aluminum version in like-new condition.

Maybe I just got a defective bar. Disappointing. I can’t sell these, so I

Re: [RBW] Re: Issues with slipping bosco bars?

2019-10-14 Thread jeff perry
Sorry to hear that. I think it’s just poor design, unfortunately. Too much
leverage from the long bars and not enough surface area in the clamp. The
bosco moose seems like the safest way to go. I’m sticking with my albatross.
I was happy with them anyway, just wanted to try something new.

[RBW] For sale - Gilles Berthoud Arabesque saddle - black. Used on one ride

2019-10-12 Thread jeff perry
Selling because I prefer the shape of my brooks. The saddle was literally
ridden for 20 minutes and went back in the box. It’s like new and comes with
all the original packaging and comes with leather lotion. I will upload
pictures shortly. Paid close to $200 for it, but selling for $100 plus
shipping. It’s a shame because the saddle is BEAUTIFUL and is much higher
quality than the brooks, but I just prefer the shape of the brooks. Every rear
end is different, so you may love it. If interested, please send me a private
message. Thanks.

[RBW] Re: Advice Sought on Hubs and Rim Choice

2019-10-09 Thread Jeff B
For what it's worth, I always value ease of service and parts availability
with my hubs. All the hubs listed fit that category for simple maintenance,
especially the sealed bearing ones such as the Phil, Chris & White. The
bearings are readily available & most are a 6902. I think the Chris King
hubs require special tools for bearing replacement although you can always
tap the bearing out with punch and make your own press. Working in a shop
for 10+ years, I have seen a few White hubs that refused to stay adjusted
and would become loose after a few rides so they required constant
attention. That being said, I've never owned a set. My nice hubs are DT
Swiss 240's and they have always been maintenance free. Only hiccup with
those is that you may ned a ring gear tool to remove the ring gear for
bearing replacement.
Shimano hubs have loose bearings, no matter how nice, so if you know how to
clean, re-pack & adjust loose bearing hubs those can provide many years of
service.
The boutique hubs may have better/ quicker engagement of the freehub body,
but don't get too hung up on that

I do not have experience with Atlas rims but an eyeleted rim is always a
very good choice so I'd say you would have no issues.

It really comes down to how much you want to spend. I think Atlas rims with
brass nipples, butted 2/1.8/2 spokes and higher lever Shimano hubs would be
pretty bomb proof. Enjoy your building!

[RBW] Re: Offroad Mountain Clem-L’s

2019-09-29 Thread jeff perry
Hi all. New member here. I thought I'd share my thoughts on a 64cm Clem L
that I got last night. I also have a 62cm Appaloosa. The Clem L is a
trip! The frame flexes noticeably compared to the Appaloosa (which I
suppose some might view as a negative), but it's just *crazy* how smooth
the ride is over bumps. Seriously, small to medium sized bumps just don't
exist anymore. No hyperbole here, it makes the Appaloosa feel harsh in
comparison, and that bike is like a sofa compared to most bikes. I took it
for a ride last night over a trail that has a lot of raised tree roots and
bumps, and the bike just cruised over stuff that would have beat me up on
the Appaloosa. It's like riding a steam roller! It has to be due to frame
flex (and maybe the longer wheelbase) because I'm running equivalent tires,
bars and saddles on both bikes. Yet despite all the gooshiness, it seems
to accelerate at least as well as the Appaloosa, although I'll put that to
the test this weekend. Amazing. It's just a blast to ride...pure fun!

For touring or longer distance road riding, the Appaloosa would be my first
choice and I'm not going to give it up, but for blasting around for fun,
the Clem L is fantastic and I'm glad I got it. My only regret is getting
green instead of blue!

[RBW] Simple0ne enjoyment

2019-08-16 Thread Jeff B
I bought a Simple0ne from a RBWOB member a while ago because my friend had
a single speed with chubby tires and convinced me I should do the same.
Funny enough he sold his this week, right after I got my bike already to
go. When I got the bike I was not really in love with it. Something just
felt odd. Maybe I was not used to the simplicity and quietness of single
speeding. But now I have the bike dialed in and I could not be any happier.
I swapped the noodle drop bars for mustache bars (which is such an easy
swap on single speeds), changed to a rack that mounts to the fork braze-on,
instead of the canti bosses (that rack is on my Atlantis which is old
enough to not have fork braze-ons) and finally I mounted some huge
GravelKings SK's to cushion the ride. The tires feel awesome and look so
ballon like mounted to the small Velocity A23 rims, which is what made me
fall in love with the aesthetic of this bike. I use it frequently as a
commuter and after work quick gravel grinder. Maybe I'll go fixed later.
Maybe I'll put a lowrider rack on it and use it as a simple camper bike.
Who knows, it's just fun for now and it looks even better dusty so I'll
keep riding it hard.

Re: [RBW] It is summer: updated sandal discussion?

2019-06-06 Thread Jeff Lesperance
I wear Keen Newport sandals - I have a pair in leather and a pair with the
nylon straps (I think it's the Newport H2 model). I like these for
cycling/adventuring because they have good toe protection, can be adjusted
fairly easily for fit, and they have a decent tread for hiking when
cycling-based adventures turn into a different type of foot power.

I've worn the leather and the nylon ones in a few rivers and streams and
they both dry out just fine and I've appreciated the stable footing and the
ability to snug them down so that they won't get pulled off my feet. On the
downside, they are bit clunky and heavy - it's not noticeable on the bike,
but in comparison to many other sandals that trend toward minimalistic
designs, these are a bit hefty.

I wear them year round in the DC metro area - when it gets cold, they get
paired up with wool socks of varying thickness as appropriate, and being
that they are a bit closed compared to other sandals, they pair fairly well
with socks.

Re: [RBW] Ergon grips/ map, waive, Jones bars

2019-06-05 Thread Jeff Lesperance
Ergon grips have become my first choice for any bar that will take them.
Ergon makes a grip specifically for bars that sweep back, wavie bars and
similar - I think it's the GC1 model - I've found it in both synthetic cork
and standard rubber.

That said, I've found sweep angle to be important for my wrists - I either
need a lot of sweep, nearly straight back, or not too much. I've used a
Jones bar, with Ergon grips, and the grips improved the experience for me,
but the sweep angle was still problematic and presented issues over long
rides. I gave up on my first set of Jones bars, but recently brought them
back into the picture when I bought a Jones bike - they've been working
well this time around with a reduced stem length, bringing the swept
portion of the bar closer to me. These are just some data points, both in
support of Ergon grips, but also for consideration of other elements that
may inform your comfort on wavie-like bars.

Re: [RBW] WTB: Brooks Cambrium C17 Carved

2019-05-02 Thread Jeff Lesperance
FWIW, I have a few of these saddles, one in black, one in slate, and one in
natural. The slate eventually started to look like the natural, the natural
got a bit dingy and started to look like the faded slate, and the black
faded so it looks like a new slate. So, if you think you want black or
slate, you probably want black.

I used to care about what they looked like, but that went away - they are
the perfect saddle for my anatomy and riding style so I'll take them at
this point whatever they look like.

2018-11-25 Thread Jeff Lesperance
Both Acorn bags, the Baggins bag, and the Carradice rack have been claimed
and/or pending payment.

I have to add another item in that I forgot:

*Nitto MT Campee rear rack - $85* - I believe this is the model meant for
26" wheeled bikes, though it fits just fine on my 700x42c'ed All City Space
Horse Disc. I have some cut down but long top struts for it but I'm missing
the mid-struts that came with it that had ends that are meant to mount on
canti-bolts - I think I gave them away to someone on this list. I added
pictures to the album of this rack.

There are pictures of the Acorn handlebar bag amongst the pictures I

Someone else has spoken up with interest in the bag, so I should say that
it is pending payment at this time.

Re: [RBW] Re: WTS - Acorn, Baggins, Ostrich, Walnut, Surly bags | Surly, Carradice racks | Trangia kit | Nitto RM013 Dirt Drops

2018-11-25 Thread Jeff Lesperance
The photo of the baggins bag with the baggins patch on it is just with the
leather patch resting on top of the tinkers patch. The bag didn't come with
any straps to attach to the bike per my recollection, but I can include
some natural color leather straps - if I have any straps that match the
leather on the bag I'll include them, but I think I only have the natural
straps in surplus.

[RBW] WTS - Acorn, Baggins, Ostrich, Walnut, Surly bags | Surly, Carradice racks | Trangia kit | Nitto RM013 Dirt Drops

2018-11-24 Thread Jeff Lesperance
I've been sitting on some bags, racks, bars, and bits that need a new home.
Prices negotiable, and include CONUS shipping unless the item is large and
needs to go to the west coast where I might ask you to chip in a bit.

Pictures here: https://photos.app.goo.gl/YpiSrvNR9yrLLk6x6

Bags first:

1. *Acorn large saddlebag - $80* - I bought this new from Acorn in 2009 and
it has been minimally used since - the black canvas is still a sharp black
color. I'm not sure how this compares to the current large model offered by
Acorn, though it looks similar to my eye. I took some photos of it next to
my Carradice Camper for size comparison.

2. *Acorn front handlebar or small saddlebag - $25* - I picked this up on
RBW or iBob a few years ago - I don't think this is a current model that
Acorn offers. It's a well-worn, slightly faded black canvas bag. I think
its meant to be a small handlebar bag, but it could be used as a small
saddlebag as well. The material is in good structural order, but the black
is faded on the top, and I've left some dirt spatters in place.

3. *Walnut Studiolo barrel bag - $85* - This is an interesting bag - you
can get more info here
<https://walnutstudiolo.com/products/as-is-sale-seat-barrel-bag> - I picked
this up at the now defunct Gravel N' Grind in Frederick, MD, and used it as
a front bag on my also now defunct Sam Hillborne and Rosco Bubbe. It's a
beautiful honey leather that has gotten a bit darker in the elements. The
back side of the bag has a depression molded into from resting up against
my handlebar and stem. It came with a single leather strap, if I remember
correctly, to attach it to the bike, which I found inadequate, and instead
used a Riv irish strap. I'll try to track down the leather strap that came
with, and include an irish strap regardless. I'll include some pics mounted
on my bikes.

4. *Ostrich handlebar/shoulder bag - $20* - This is a small,
natural-colored bag meant to be a small handlebar bag and shoulder bag. It
has a light stain of unknown origin on the bottom part of the bag that I
have not attempted to wash out.

5. *Baggins bag - $25* - This is a long-ish barrel-ish Baggins bag - unsure
of the model on this one - I picked it up secondhand at a swap. The
previous owner installed a plastic stiffener inside and appears to have had
at some point screwed something through the backside of the bag, possibly a
part for a decaleur. I removed the original leather patch on the front, as
the bag was torn on the edge of the patch - I hot-glued a piece of leather
to the inside of the bag at the tear and glued a bike tinkers union patch,
which is slightly larger than the original leather patch, on the front to
cover the tear. I'll include the original leather patch with the bag.

6. *Surly Size 9 Frame Bag - $120* - Size info can be found here
<https://surlybikes.com/uploads/downloads/22074_SUR_Bag_Fit_Chart_Update_VF.pdf>
-
I've been using this frame bag on my large Surly Troll for a season or two
- it's in great shape - not remotely abused, just a bit of dirt here and
there.

Racks:

1. *Surly 8-pack rack - $80 *- Used this on my Surly Troll for a year or so
- rack is is great shape and includes all original hardware

2. *Surly 24-pack rack - $90 *- Used this on my Surly Troll for a few
months, though acquired secondhand - rack is in great shape and includes
all original hardware

3. *Carradice classic saddlebag rack - $20* - I picked this up at the
Gravel n' Grind closing sale, and tried it with my Camper on a Cambium and
it worked, but the Camper is arguably a bit large for this rack - it could
work, but I wasn't comfortable with it. You can find more info about this
rack from Carradice
<https://www.carradice.co.uk/products/saddle-fixing-systems/carradice-classic-saddlebag-rack>

4. *Velo-Orange 6-pack rack - $17* - This is an add-on to a number of VO
racks - more info here
<https://velo-orange.blogspot.com/2014/08/six-pack-rack-arrives.html> -
appears to no longer be available from VO.

Other:

1. *Nitto RM013 Heat-treated Dirt Drop handlebars, 52cm measured at flared
bar end - $50 *- I bought this over the summer as part of a quest to find a
dirt drop that would work for me - this particular bar is fairly similar to
a 46cm Noodle, with more of a flare at the bar ends. Used only on a test
ride, mounted once, never taped. Pictured with a couple other bars that are
no longer for sale

2. *Dia-Compe reverse brake levers - $20* - picked these up at a swap at
some point and never found a use for them - new, in package.

3. *Trangia cookset - $85* - pretty sure this is the small kit Riv sells -
info here
<https://www.rivbike.com/collections/camping/products/trangia-cooksets?variant=23334942785>
-
I picked this up secondhand and the kit was like new - I've had it out on a
few s240's and found it's just a larger kit than I've ever needed.

Re: [RBW] WTT: My Nitto Dirt Drop RM014 (52cm - 31.8 clamp) for your Nitto RM013 (52cm, 26.0/25.4) or other alternative?

2018-09-14 Thread Jeff Lesperance
I have a RM013 52cm w/26mm clamp that I purchased from Ben's Cycle in July
when I was on a handlebar mission. Around the same time I procured a
Cowchipper, a Ritchey Venturemax, and an Origin8 Gary OS Sweep bar. I
tested all of them as a replacement for a Nitto Noodle, where I was looking
for more flare than the Noodle, but similar reach. I came to prefer the
Origin8 bar, and have been dragging my feet in offering up the Nitto,
Cowchipper and Venturemax for sale. I really don't need to trade and I
understand you're not in a position to buy, but I'm happy to consider other
items in trade, or if you can consider selling your bar I can hold my Nitto
to trade to you for that cash you'd get from a sale.

Re: [RBW] Recommended Mixed Surface Tires for Not-Too-Technical Riding?

2018-07-28 Thread Jeff Lesperance
For my mixed surface riding, I've used:

1. Schwalbe Thunder Burt
2. Bruce Gordon Rock n' Road
3. Panaracer Gravel King SK

My mixed surface riding includes:

1. Urban roads of varying condition in the Washington DC Metro area
2. Smooth hard packed trails
3. Rough graveled and pocked/rutted trails

The Thunder Burt feel the nicest to me, in general, on non-paved surfaces.
I've put the most mils on the Rock n' Roads, and they're great - I'd forget
they were knobby tires if not for the hum I get from them on road surfaces.
The Gravel King's are my newest experience and they seem to be the better
tire if more than 50% of the riding might be on road surfaces. I've found
the Bruce Gordon knobs to wear a bit more on paved surfaces than the others
if I'm carrying more than just myself on the bike.

All that said, for a bit more than a year I only used Compass Barlow Pass
tires on my Sam Hillborne and All City Space Horse Disc, for all of my
riding, and only once did I feel like I wanted some type of a studded or
treaded tire, and that was when the trail I was riding on was super wet and
muddy.

Re: [RBW] Re: removing broken hex bolt from rack mount

2018-07-05 Thread Jeff Lesperance
I agree that Bill’s likely got the best advice here, though my default is
to try to cut a slot in it with a dremel or hacksaw if there’s enough bolt
body protruding from the boss - it looks like there is but the angle of
the photo makes it hard to tell for sure. Once there’s enough of a slot to
get a slotted screwdriver on it, give it a twist. If that doesn’t work, the
dremel or hacksaw will be handy to just cut the boss right off! 😀

Re: [RBW] Re: Dear Riv, please make a wider Noodle

2018-06-27 Thread Jeff Lesperance
Darin - thanks for the link - I hadn't seen that particular write-up but I
had looked at Nitto dirt drops in the past and my impression was they they
were all too narrow at the ramps or where the brake levers would be. Looks
like I might have been wrong as the widest RM-013 looks like it could be
close to 46 at the brake levers - I just found a picture here with a
measuring tape:

https://store.biketouringnews.com/nitto-dirt-drop-handlebar-rm-013/

Regarding the shorter ramps on the bars that I'm trying - I knew it would
be a trade-off, and I wanted to see if it would work - had I factored in
the Nitto I might have come to a solution sooner. Thus far, I've tried the
bar with the shortest ramp of the 3 I picked out, the Cowchipper, and it
was close to working, but not quite. I expect the Ritchey may have just
enough, though not a lot of real estate to move around on, and the Origin8
bar is the longest of the three but also the widest flare that I'm unsure
about. I really loved the feel of the drops on the Cowchipper.

I've tried a lot of different things on my bikes over the years, but I've
been pretty locked into Noodles - I've actually enjoyed the research and
the shuffling of the cockpit recently, and I'll be happy to practice catch
n' release of the bars that don't work for me so someone else can maybe try
something different.

Re: [RBW] Re: Dear Riv, please make a wider Noodle

2018-06-26 Thread Jeff Lesperance
Tony, I’ve been going through a journey that I’ve written up a bit on the
iBob list, looking for a 46cm bar as you’ve described. I’m not sure if
you’re a member of that group - I can provide more detail if you’re not,
but the short story is that I’ve not found anything with the same reach and
drop as a 46cm noodle, with flared drops. Trade-off is shorter reach and/or
drop - I’m currently trying out:

46cm Salsa Cowchipper
46cm Ritchey Venturemax
44cm Origin8 Gary Sweep OS

The Salsa has the shortest reach of the bunch - it was pretty comfortable
but lacks the extra hand position behind the hoods with such a short reach.
I’m now trying out the Venturemax.

I put together a google spreadsheet with a bunch of data on handlebars I
wanted to compare, it’s filtered at the moment for some specific bars, but
if you remove the filter you can compare a number of bar measurements;

Re: [RBW] Re: Hammock camping?

2018-05-30 Thread Jeff Lesperance
I purchased a Hennessy Hammock after witnessing Pondero's setup. I had
doubts about sleeping in a hammock that might force me to sleep in a U
shape but the Hennessy mitigates this with its asymmetrical design and I
add a thermarest pad as an insulating base that seems to help as well. I
like being cool when I sleep, but I've been surprised to find that I prefer
the insulation for all but the hottest weather (in the mid-atlantic US).

If you don't have a Hennessy but your hammock is wide enough for you to get
a bit diagonal in it so that your head and toes point off-center from your
anchor points you may find that you can sleep a bit flatter. My task for my
next night out in the Hennessy is to sort out how to set it up on the
ground if I ever find myself without appropriate trees.

Re: [RBW] Help me remove my Ergon grip

2018-05-29 Thread Jeff Lesperance
Ergon biocork? I think that's are area that would be ok to introduce a bit
of heat - I'd go for that before adding more torque to the bolt head -
maybe lighter/butane lighter grade heat, not torch heat. If'n that fails,
I'd drip a bit more oil in there and go with short turning motions with the
hex key to simulate a hammer drill type of effect. If'n that fails I'd go
full torque and prepare for the stripping of the bolt head. When that
happens I'd whip out my dremel and cut a slot in the head of the bolt and
start attacking it with a screwdriver. When that fails I'd start cutting
away more of the bolt head with my dremel until it's substantially reduced
or removed enough so as to be able to remove the grip because it's no
longer holding tension. I'd then set about backing the remainder of the
screw out of the grip if I were so inclined to not explain how I really
felt about it with a sledgehammer. I might then contact Ergon about the
extent of their warranty :)
