RE: [RBW] Re: Tuning Brake Squeal

2014-07-30 Thread Larry Powers
If you don't mind going old school look at the Tektro CR720 cantilever brakes.
I recently changed my Atlantis over to these because the bridal cable on the
Suntour XC Pros didn't really clear the fenders with a good line and will never
clear the Nitto mini rack I plan to install. So far I am happy with these
brakes.

I also had a squeal issue with my Quickbeam and tried several brakes and pads
with no luck. I installed a set of these in the front and no more squeal.

Subject: [RBW] Re: Tuning Brake Squeal

A timely topic for discussion, this is. I've recently encountered the same
problem on one of my bikes. It is a Surly 1x1 and for years I've had a problem
mounting a rear fender because the arms on the run-of-the-mill Shimano linear
pull brake aren't long enough to accommodate both a fender and a 60mm Schwalbe
"balloon" tire. So last Winter I decided to do something about it and got
ahold of a Tektro 857AL brake with 110mm arms, long enough to clear the tire
and fender. The set up worked out very well - clearance is great. The actual
application, not so much. After a few weeks of riding, a tremendous squeal
started from the rear brake (the front has a disc). Now, these particular
Tektros are very cheap brakes, apparently made for low-end bikes, so I notice
quite a bit of play in the arms at the point where they bolt onto the seat stay
mounts. That's what I'm blaming for the squealing - an oscillation caused by a
tiny back and forth movement of the arms as the pads grip the rims while
braking. I plan to get some thin washers to place under the arm pivots to see
if I can take up some of the slack. 'Course, I could be wrong. As someone
else on this thread mentioned, the longer Kool Stop pads may be part of the
problem, too. So that'll be step 2 if this solution doesn't work.

about this given the bell thread.) Here are the instruments:

Bike one: Pitch is a high D. Quickbeam with 700c Araya TX310F rims, Shimano
cantilever brakes with koolstop pads (model unknown; whatever cam stock on a
QB),

Shimano Tiagra Road Brake Levers, and panaracer paselas.

Bike two: Pitch is a low E (yes, almost an octave between the two bikes).
Custom with 26" Aeroheat rims, Paul Touring canti's with koolstop pads, Shimano
MTB silver brake levers, and Big Bens.

Let the theories commence!

[RBW] Loading An Atlantis

2014-07-11 Thread Larry Powers
I have done some shorter tours on my Atlantis, 3 to 5 days. I have used light
weight back packing gear and gotten by with a Boxy Baggins in the front and a
Hoss in the back and no racks. I am looking at doing a longer tour and my
original plan was to use a large Berthoud bag in the front and two mid sized
panniers in the rear. My friend who has done a lot of touring says I will need
more weight in the front, ie front panniers to distribute the load better. Can
anyone with experience comment on how best to load up an Atlantis for the best
handling?

Thanks.

RE: [RBW] How do I straighten my Brooks saddle nose?

2014-06-10 Thread Larry Powers
Could this be you? If several saddles have done the exact same thing could it
be that you are not symmetrical and the saddle is just breaking into fit the
way you are? I know that I do not set square on the bike and I actually need
to point the nose of the saddle slightly to the left of center to be
comfortable. I have not had the same issue you are seeing and I know that the
quality of these saddles is not what is was 10 years ago. But they are leather
and they do break in to fit the rider. If the rails are straight then maybe it
is you. Have someone ride behind you and see if they can see how you sit, if
your back is straight and hips parallel. If not it is no big deal other then
helping to explain how your bike need to be adjusted to fit you.

When I bought it, it had a slight curve to the nose, and I didn't want to make
a fuss and return it, but now I think it is getting worse and rubbing my right

What is it with Brooks? I think I have bought 5 in the last few years, and I
think three have had either a curved nose, or the rivets aren't symmetrical, or
the adjustment bolt is crooked.

RE: [RBW] Re: Quickbeam Squeal and Brakes

2014-05-14 Thread Larry Powers
I believe this is just break squeal as I don't feel any vibrations when I stop.

I have been meaning to try a different rim, that would be a good test. I
currently have a CR18 on the front and I think the squeal is worse with it then
with the stock rim that came with the bike.

There is no play in the brakes so the bolts are OK.

I have a good mechanic and he has minimized the squeal but it always creeps
back in after I get a few miles on the bike.

I think I will go back to Kool Stop pads as they have been the best. I have
some nice looking IRD cantilevers on my tandem another set for the Quickbeam
may be in order. And perhaps a new front wheel if a different rim proves to be
quieter.

Thanks for the suggestions. I love the bike. If I could just get the squeal
under control it would be perfect.

I use salmon Kool Stops and don't toe in excessively. Still running the

for the brake stop.
(last photo here -
http://www.cyclofiend.com/ssg/2006/ssg017-cyclofiend0206.html )
If it's brake squeal rather than shudder, then I don't know if it can be
addressed by changing the brake stop - there have been a number of discussions
(mostly in CX threads) about flexing cable stop mounts causing unwanted shudder
under hard braking.
I'd pop a different front wheel in there, just to see if it's related to the
rim. Especially if you are getting the same results from different brake
models.
I ran some Avids on a CX bike, and do recall them being noisier - maybe
something in the mount causing them to flex away - essentially undoing the
toe-in - as you are moving.
Any chance that the brake mounting bolts are bottoming out before they
completely tighten the brake? You should be able to detect fore/aft play in
the brake if that's the case.
The other thing to do is find a shop who has the Wrench (mechanic) who knows
how to deal with canti brake setup. Most don't. Pay to watch them work on it
and ask some questions.
Sorry not to have a great, all-encompassing answer for you...

[RBW] Quickbeam Squeal and Brakes

2014-05-13 Thread Larry Powers
My Quickbeam is my most used bike but I have suffered with front brake squeal
since I bought it about 8 years ago. The original Shimano brakes may have
squealed the least. I have also tried Cane Creek cantis and currently have
Avid shorty 6's on the bike. The current brakes may be the worst.

I spoke with Rivendell and they feel the issue is brake related and not an
issue with the fork.

I took a look at the Quickbeams on the Cyclofiend site noticed that many had
high profile cantis. Has anyone cured the squeal by going to high profile
cantis? Any recomendations? Paul does not recommend their high profile cantis
for road bikes so I have been looking at Cane Creek and Velo Orange brakes.
Any thoughts on these? Any other options?

Thanks.

[RBW] Rack Mounting Question

2014-03-29 Thread Larry Powers
I have an Atlantis with Suntour XC Pro cantilever brakes and I have a Nitto
M-12 rack. I would like to mount the rack using Nitto front rack canti studs.
I have two questions. Is it possible to mount this rack to these brakes with
the canti studs? If not, is it possible to mount the rack at all to these
brakes?

Also the best run for the brake cable is exactly at the height of the mounting
hole in the fork crown. I am not sure how well the brakes will function with
the longer straddle cable.

While I enjoyed building this bike up with as much Suntour XC Pro as I
could, these brakes are probably my least favorite components. I would be open
to replacing them.

[RBW] FS: Tent and Sleeping Bags

2014-03-29 Thread Larry Powers
I have two sleeping bags and a tent for
sale that would be good for bicycle camping.

The sleeping bags are EMS hooded mummy
bags rated to 40 degrees with fiberfill insulation, they zip
together and are extra long. Stuff sacks are in good shape with a
plush liner so they can be turned inside out and used as a pillow.
The weather flaps are delaminating. Maybe 10 years old but used
lightly and in great shape. Sleeping bags were stored in a large
laundry bad which is also included. Weight of one bag with stuff sack is 2.5
lbs.

The tent is an LL Bean tad pole tent.
Cozy two person tent with one front door and rain fly. Sets up with
3 poles. Small triangle vent screen in the rear and the front has a
full sized screen. No nylon foot print but a heavy duty plastic
ground cloth is included. No signs of delamination on tent floor or
fly. Total weight of tent, fly, poles, stakes and ground sheet is
6lbs 4ozs. Maybe 10 years old but used lightly and in great shape.

These sleeping bags with this tent were
comfortable for us down to 40 degrees and useable to 35 degrees.

I would like to sell all together for
$100 plus actual shipping. Will sell the pair of sleeping bags for
$70 plus shipping and the tent for $45 plus shipping if no one wants
them all. Located in central Connecticut for those that want to pick
up.

I will have photos shortly.
Contact me off line if interested.

RE: [RBW] Re: Multiple grand randonnees on a Rivendell.

2014-02-08 Thread Larry Powers
The simple answer is that if it was 96 hours anyone could do it.

I think there is a a minimum speed you are expected to ride plus a minimum
number hours of sleep you are allotted and this adds up to 90 hours.

I have completed two 1200k Randonnees on my Rambouillet, BMB 2006 and PBP 2007.
It takes a huge commitment to train and qualify for a 1200k and life has
caught up with me for the last few years. This year I am in the hunt to do a
1000k and shoot for PBP next year and I will still be riding my Rambouillet.

[RBW] Today's Ride

2014-01-19 Thread Larry Powers
Today was 35 degrees and windy. I had an 11 mile loop on about 5 miles of dirt
and 6 miles of paved on my Quickbeam with Schwalbe Marathon Winter 35mm tires.
On a windy day I try to do the dirt with the wind to my back. Well I guessed
wrong today. The dirt road follows the Connecticut River and it has the river
on one side and open farm fields on the other. Add the muddy conditions and it
made for a good resistance workout. Given the cold that gets here tomorrow
this is probably my last ride for awhile.

My blue wooly warm trainer kept me more then warm enough.

Love the bike and the jersey. Two of the best products that Riv made and are
no more.

brings smiles to all who see it, and to me especially when I ride it. But I
also understand RBW's economics on this, it was an expensive frame, much the
same price as a road frame with rear attachment point for a derailleur. Maybe
there's a future frame coming that will have an attachment for shifting as well
as semi-horizontal rear forks to allow for wheelbase adjustment.

me wrong. I have learned to love riding fixed gear. There is something about it
that just feels so nice, almost meditative. Meeting a down hill does not bother
me anymore, like in those first few days. I have a feeling that I will be
putting a lot of miles on the SimpleOne in fixed mode this spring and summer.
Here are a couple of pictures of the SimpeOne set up as a fixed commuter. I am
loving the Bullmoose bars I put on it at the same time as the fixed wheel.

RE: [RBW] Re: Rack and Panniers for a Rabmouillet

2012-10-26 Thread Larry Powers

I ran a Tubus Luna on my Rabmouillet for a while. It is the only rack that
looks good enough to be on a Rambouillet. It is a light duty rack but it is
rated at a max load of 40lbs which should be more then adequate. It has a
single attachment point to the bike that uses the rear brake bolt. This was a
little funky to set up but was fine once it was in place. It is also very
narrow and can't be used to support a trunk bag.

That said I am back to using my Hoss on the Rambouillet because I don't like
having a rack on it and it is not my primary commuter. I laid a piece of
corrugated plastic sign board in the bottom of the Hoss and it works well for
hauling my clothes, lunch and occasionally a lap top. If this is your primary
commuter then the Luna is a good looking rack that doesn't over power the bike
when there are no bags on it.

RE: [RBW] What should I do with my slightly-too-small bike?

2012-10-14 Thread Larry Powers

If the bike is set up correctly in the pictures then it looks like it fits
fine. If the issue is you just don't want a go fast road bike that is fine but
it looks good to me. If the parts will work on the bike you have in mind then
I would strip them and sell frame/fork/headset. What you may find is that for
what you can get you might as well hang on to it for un-loaded riding. Of
course that is the thinking that got me a garage full of bikes.

Subject: [RBW] What should I do with my slightly-too-small bike?

My 59cm Rivendell Road Standard, I have finally decided, is too small for me.
It has been a fabulous bike for me; but it is what it is — a road bike, when
really, I've wanted a touring bike.

Here are some photos, with the newest toward the bottom:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/fundenphoto/sets/72157625044930434/

It is currently running Rivendell's 609mm rims, with the (approx. 34mm)
Schwalbe tires. I put these on when I discovered the bike wouldn't clear
anything wider than a 700x28 tire.

I have my eyes on the Velo-Orange Campeur - which I'm thinking I may build up
from a frame. Any proceeds from the Riv sale would be funneled toward the VO
build.

I see my Rivendell options as follows:

- Sell the complete bike as it is built. (plus the original 700c wheels)
- Cannibalize the parts for the Campeur project; sell the Riv frame.
- Hang some or all of it up in the attic.

What do you think?

Of course, it would be nice to partially fund the next project... but perhaps
it would be better to keep the Rivendell? What am I overlooking?

RE: [RBW] Any commuters here?

2012-09-24 Thread Larry Powers

I have commuted on my QBeam for the last 6 years, year round. Standard QB
build but it has a Shimano gernerator hub and fenders. In the winter it easily
handles 35mm studded tires with the fenders. That was a main factor in
deciding to buy it. My commute can be as simple as a 5 mi flat commute or when
time allows I have rolling routes of up to 25 miles to get here. The QB
handles it all.

I commuted in DC and Arlington on my Bleriot from the day it arrived in late

potatoes and vegetables, cereal, fruit, cleaning stuff ). Plus I carry 2 locks
because I'm a little paranoid, not enough to stop taking the bike all over but
enough to warrant the extra weight.
And as an aside - once I get going, I kind of stop noticing the weight, just am
aware that I have to gear lower for certain hills and am going slower than
unloaded on the same roads.JoanAnd "lungimsam" - I think you live in the DC

RE: [RBW] Biking incident on Seattle BGT...

2012-08-07 Thread Larry Powers

I hate MUP's and avoid them at all costs. At lest around here (central
Connecticut) I can always find a route on the roads that I feel comfortable on.
I am much more comfortable riding in traffic that is all moving in the same
direction then I am on a trail with oblivious walkers pushing strollers and
walking dogs on long long leashes. Then add in the kids on bikes, skates or
anything else and bicyclists who don't give a darn about the conditions and
ride flat out no matter what and you have an accident waiting to happen. Maybe
there are no other good options in other parts of the country but it does not
sound like enjoyable riding to me.

I am glad you and your Atlantis came through in relatively good shape.

Subject: [RBW] Biking incident on Seattle BGT...

As a commuter, I'd like to think I'm pretty good about
being safe, riding defensively, especially when it comes to using MUPs
(multi-use paths), which brings me to an incident my wife and I had
yesterday on the Burke-Gilman Trail just north of 70th Ave NE (or is it
NE 70th?) in Seattle. The last days here have been pretty nice, although
very hot, the trail tends to get very busy with cyclists, pedestrians,
pedestrians with dogs, pedestrians with perambulators, and so forth. All
good stuff; there's no denying that because one way or another, as
individuals, we all use the trail system in a variety of those roles.
But not everyone understands that this is a MUP, and that common sense
dictates that everyone needs to look out for one another, especially
when the trail gets congested along the way.

Imagine taking a leisurely ride on your local MUP on a very nice weekend
morning. The trail has its busy sections here and there. Cyclists and
pedestrians are moving along pleasantly enough; lots of "on your left"
and passing around people two, three abreast, cooperating with the
riders. You're going along at a casual 9 to 10 mph. No biggy; safe
enough.

Everyone's enjoying their day on the tree-lined trail with a nice little
breeze. You notice that there's a threesome of pedestrians abreast of
each other, chatting, about 50 feet or so ahead of you. There are other
cyclists "on your lefting" as they pass. The trail is getting a little
congested, and your preparing to slow down as you approach the
pedestrians to pass. "On your left," the pedestrian don't heed your
warning and at the same time some rider goes zipping by you without any
warning as you're making your move, oblivious of the situation, causing
you to slam on your brakes in order to not run into the people in front
of you, and causes you to jar your shoulder, and hit you pubic bone
against the bike stem and cut your leg on the chain ring as you try to
stabilize your bike without taking a full-on fall. And, your spouse who
is riding behind you, swerves to the left across the trail and into the
ditch that runs alongside it so that he/she doesn't rear-end you. Not a
pretty scene.

So here's the rant. These MUPs aren't high-speed highways for cyclists.
I'm pretty sure there's a 15 mph speed limit on the BGT. Although, I
really believe that most of the cyclist that use these trails are pretty
sensitive to how they're used, they're a number of people who ride that
have no clue, and do not know how to anticipate a situation before it
happens, especially when the trail gets congested as traffic moves
along. Riding a bicycle really isn't much different than driving a car
when it comes to riding defensively. Yes, pedestrians, on and off the
trail, have the right-of-way! And if we could all predict the future
before it happens, wouldn't life be box of chocolates. It's not that
way, especially in a traffic situation. We're not perfect, that's a
given. But what happened to common sense, courtesy, and respect.

Anyway, I landed safely in the ditch, nothing serious happened to me or
my Atlantis, except for a little gouge I took in the calf from a pedal
spike. The rider would've kept on riding if it weren't for my wife
yelling at the rider to come back. Thankfully the rider did come back to
listen to my wife's lecture, and then mine, as a few other riders sped
by without a "on your left." It's too bad that the rider who caused this
mess is most like not going to find this post. It would be good for her
to see the grapefruit-sized hematoma on her upper inner thigh, and the
cuts and bruises on her leg.

Subject: [RBW] Katy Trail with Wife and Friend

Dawn and I just got back from a week along the Katy Trail in Missouri. I
wanted to explore a bit so left on Friday and went to Lee Summit Missouri and
then checked out the new connector (the parts that are finished) from Kansas
City. I meandered with no particular place to go for a couple of days as the
distance to meet my wife and friend in Sedalia was two comfortable days and I
had 2 1/2. I enjoyed some gravel roads that are lacking in St Louis, and the
freedom to just go one direction for a few hours and then change my mind and go
someplace else. With limited vacation or time on these journeys it's
difficult to get that truly free feeling. Tired of riding head winds, turn
around and ride the other way today. However this quick trip to meet them at
the train was close. Even with my meanderings I managed to get to Sedalia a
day early. With rain coming in I chose a rehabbed historical motel that had
the most comfortable bed I had ever slept in I think.
I've ridden the Katy Trail several times, and mostly on my way home from
someplace else. The times I've ridden just the Katy were to get it over with
one could say with 85 and 107 mile days to get from Sedalia to St Charles fully
loaded. This time we were going to enjoy it and see things. The first day was
a comfortable 65 miles to one Katfish Kates along the river. We setup camp and
had chili and hotdogs at the campsite. The next day we went and toured
Columbia Missouri visiting bicycle shops and meeting a friend for lunch. The
connector from Columbia to the trail is about 18 miles round trip plus whatever
milage we did in town. Great day followed the next day by a trip into
Jefferson City Missouri, were we visited the capital building and got to see /
experience the new bike path and ramp to the hiway bridge. hard to explain...
here is a photo of the ramp...
http://www.flickr.com/photos/tksleeper/7167529573/in/set-72157630082138300
Last time I went into Jefferson City I was on the bridge with 50 mph traffic,
no shoulder and a smile that I was still alive.. :) Another great day.
Long story short the slowed pace and good company made for a fantastic trip.
We visited and met many great people and saw some fun bikes. A gorgeous Thorn
here ..

Finally saw one of the extra wheels in the wild. It appeared to be working
great and the owner had many miles on it. here..
http://www.flickr.com/photos/tksleeper/7167526859/in/set-72157630082138300This
photo was at a hostel that we stopped at. It was too busy not to visit and see
what was going on.As it turned out there was 4 groups of us that would
start at different times and stop at different places but seemed to meet up
during the last 3 days or so here and there. It was fun.
When trying to get the ride over with or get someplace the Katy Trail can be
monotonous and tiring. When making it up as you go and stopping to see, smell
and experience things around you it is quite different. Not having an agenda
and giving ourselves 4 days more than we needed to just ride it was great. We
left Sedalia Mo on Monday and got to our homes on Friday. Dawn and I live
about 18 miles from the trial head.
So if you decide to ride this great trail system I recommend not over planning
but making it up as you go with a general to do list. Be sure to get into the
connecting cities at the very least Columbia, Jefferson City, Booneville and
Herman, enjoy the brewery in Augusta and then meander on into St Charles. I
generally ride it West to East as I like riding to home.
Here is the picture set on
flickrhttp://www.flickr.com/photos/tksleeper/sets/72157630082138300/with/7167526859/

I posted about a door jam bracket I used to mount a tubes lowrider rack on
Dawns Atlantis. It worked great and may be the long term solution for future
rides at this point. Here is her bike loaded down. She listened to me and I
didn't listen to myself by putting the rain covers on the panniers. Hers thus
stayed clean and mine were dirty and had to be cleaned when I got home.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/tksleeper/7352739970/in/set-72157630082138300

Well sorry for the long post.. we had a great time though. July is the Denali
Adventure with Adventure Cycling then the Allegheny / C&O first week of
October. There are four of us doing that now. We'll be riding to DC and be
shuttled back to Pittsburg. If you would like to join us let me know. It will
be self contained unsupported, and we'll probably be doing 45 to 55 miles per
day.

RE: [RBW] Low Trail Fork Experiment ... FYI only - Not intended to start another debate...

2012-06-05 Thread Larry Powers

I am always impressed with people who can put this type of thought and effort
into a bike project.

I have an Atlantis and a Rambouillet. I have ridden many brevets including
1200k's on the Rambouillet using a large front handlebar bag. The only problem
I have encountered is climbing at low speed the weight of the bag tends to make
the front wheel want to flop more from side to side requiring extra effort to
maintain a straight line. At normal cruising speed and on high speed descents
I have found the handling of the bike to be sure and confident.

I have ridden the Atlantis unloaded and with a Hoss and Boxy Baggins for week
long tours and again never encountered any problems in handling. I have not
put on a full load of panniers so I can't comment on this. The bike feels just
a little heavier then the Rambouillet but not so much so that I wouldn't use it
for general riding.

I don't know if my experience with the performance of the bikes is different
because of slight differences in the bikes, the style of the rider (me) versus
other riders styles or just a difference in expectations. Because I am quite
happy with the handling of these bikes I have decided that I do not want to
change them.

But, I have also wanted to try a low trail bike and recently saw that the Velo
Orange Randonneurs were on sale for a very good price. I am in the process of
building one of these bikes up now and will be interested to see how it
compares to my Riv's. One difference with the VO Randonneurs compared to other
low trail bikes is that the VO's are 700c and limited to 30mm tires with
fenders. I am assuming that the trail is optimized for this width tire. If I
find I like the low trail bike for touring I can then invest in a frame that
will take the wider tires I would like and if I don't I haven't invested too
much in the experiment.

Nice work, keep us posted on your results.

Subject: [RBW] Low Trail Fork Experiment ... FYI only - Not intended to start
another debate...
To: rbw-owners-bunch@googlegroups.com

Disclaimer: This is a very long post and I want to start by stating that I
don't mean to start another heated debate on high vs. low trail fork, or Jan
vs. Grant philosophies, etc. I just want to describe this experiment and its
initial results to the group so anyone thinking along the same lines has
another point of reference. I'll gladly answer any questions that are posted,
either privately or publicly but let's handle it as the controversial topic it
usually is. Also worth noting is that this is a modification I chose to do on
my own to my bikes and while Rivendell certainly supports the exchange of
information and knowledge about bikes, they certainly stand proudly by their
bikes and their design philosophy. This post is in no way an attempt to
challenge that. They are aware of my experiment.

Ok, here I go... For a number of reasons that I can just summarize, in no
particular order, as the tendency of my Rivendell bikes to shimmy with any
loads (especially my Atlantis), my dislike for how they handle with any front
loads and especially heavier ones, as well as with heavy rear loads, all of
which magnify the tendency of the front steering to pull and require
overcorrection when turning, as well as the interesting and very educating
online discussions and articles on bike geometry and fork geometry and its
effects on the handling characteristics of a bike, I decided to try it to see
for myself what the whole low trail geometry claims were about.

I wasn't able or willing to go buy a new bike just to experiment, and even if I
did, there would be no way I could tell what the low trail fork would do to the
handling of my Rivendell bikes which, aside from the nuances/issues stated
above, I love. And yes, while I could certainly adjust to all of these quirks,
I just didn't like having them on my bikes. The obvious solution recommended by
some people on this group in addition to several articles online pointed me to
Tom Matchak in the East Coast who had already built low trail forks for other
Rivendell bikes. Tom seemed to have a great reputation as a builder and
immediately knew what this was all about when I contacted him. Due to the long
lead time to have the low trail fork built for my Atlantis as was my original
intention plus a few additional considerations that came up as part of this
process, like the need to have the Atlantis repainted and why not, the
Hunqapillar as well (never did like that gray color much), I decided to take
the risk of ordering two low trail forks for both the Atlantis and the
Hunqapillar as these are the bikes I mainly ride loaded.

I asked Jan Heine for his low trail recommendation as well as Tom Ma

Atlantis - Rambouillet - Qbeam

I don't know why but the Qbeam is my favorite. Over the last few years it has
gotten 90% of the miles. It is my trainer, commuter and all around ride. It
has had a Shimano generater hub on it for at least 5 year and it is still going
strong. Other then that it is a standard QB build. I am even thinking about
getting a Simple One for commuting and a set the QB up for randoneurring.

The more you ride it the more you will like it.

Could you please post the itinerary for this tirp? I have tried to piece it

have been planning a DC to Pittsburgh trip on the trails and if I could plan it
to overlap with the rally that would be fun.

seemed the year we tried it on a tandem with the wrong gearing and an out of

RE: [RBW] Quickbeam gearing for hills and weak knee?

2011-12-14 Thread Larry Powers

I will second the internal hub. Sounds like your knees are no longer up to
having only one speed any more so it is time to get some gears. When I have to
do something with my QB because of my old knees this is the way I will go. It
has much more cool factor then a deraileur bike.

Subject: [RBW] Quickbeam gearing for hills and weak knee?
From: whalen...@gmail.com
To: rbw-owners-bunch@googlegroups.com

Hi All,

I love my Quickbeam but the combo of living on a hill and having a
deteriorating knee that I want to avoid mashing on is limiting my riding with
it. I now have 40/30 front and a 17/19 freewheel. I'd love to get it set up
so I could spin home uphill and am willing to sacrifice top speed to do so, but
also need to keep enough top end to ride safely on streets with cars. I'd also
like to avoid flipping the wheel to get to an even lower outer freewheel.

So, any thoughts about how I could modify my current gearing to favor easy
climbing yet still have a bike that was geared high enough to be rideable on
streets downtown?

Thanks in advance.

RE: [RBW] Bag Recommendation for First Brevet

2011-11-11 Thread Larry Powers

While I believe that my gigantic Berthoud handlebar bag is the best bag for
randonneuring, I am not suggesting you go out and buy one right away. I road
most of my early brevets with a Little Joe bag and a map holder on my
handlebars. Use what you have because you may find that after riding a few
brevets you don't enjoy it so why spend a lot of money up front? Second if you
do like it you can spend your first rides looking at what other riders use and
determining what you do and don't like about your current setup. You can then
make changes to your rig as the $'s allow.

While there are a good number of steel bikes with classic randonneuring bags at
brevets more people are riding go fast racing bikes with minimal bags,
especially at the shorter distances. Even at the longer distances you will see
riders who are on go fast bikes with just a small trunk bag. You need to do
some rides and see where you fit between the carry everything riders and the
minimalist riders.

The big plus to a handlebar bag is that it has a great out of the way map case
on top of it. It also supplies a place for the things you want to get to
easily while riding: cell phone, camera, food or wind breaker. I have found
that the mid to large handlebar bags that do not use a front rack did throw off
the handling of the bike more then I liked. Smaller bags can be OK but most of
the bags that mount to the bars hold the bag very high. early on I used a Boxy
Baggins on a Nitto handle bar mount and as long as I kept the load light it was
not a problem. The Boxy Baggins/Little Joe was my second generation brevet
rig. Note that a handlebar bag can cause some real issues with cable routing.

The Berthoud bag on a front rack with a decular works very well on my
Rambouillet as long as I don't over load it. I still use some type of bag
under my seat to carry a few small heavy items. If you decide to buy one of
these buy the model with all elastic loops. I bought one with leather straps
and buckles and it is a nightmare getting in and out of the pockets while
riding.

Good luck

I live in a walkup apartment building, and lugging my Riv up and down the
stairs and through the narrow doorway has become quite annoying.

I have been toying with the idea of installing a bike locker in our parking lot
for about a year now... I pitched the idea to my condo association last year
(see attached presentation), and although they wont fund the project, they have
let me install one on my own dime.

I just wanted to get the groups thoughts--would you store your Riv in a bike
locker, outside, in the elements? Think about moisture/humidity affecting the
steel, safety/security... (or anything else I haven't thought of).

Having one of these will definitely get me riding more. I'm just afraid of
what may happen to the bike...

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts!

RE: [RBW] A tent for bike-camping???

2011-10-13 Thread Larry Powers

After a tour a couple of years a go I wanted a lighter tent with some additonal
features.

www.rei.com/product/787394/rei-quarter-dome-t2-plus-tent

I bought the plus tent becuase my wife and I are both tall. It appears that
they no longer have the regular and the Plus is currently on clearance. They
typically introduce the newer versions in the fall.

I liked the fact that it is lighter then then my older tent. It is all mesh so
cooler in the summer (although not as warm in the sprint and fall. The biggest
feature was a door on each side to that we could get out of the tent at night
without crawling over each other.

I am in starting the "looking" phase of purchasing a tent for bike camping and
was wondering if any of the group had any recommendations. I need the tent to
fit two people at most (I may go with the wife sometimes) but usually it will
just be me. I guess top priorities would be weight, I would like it to be free
standing if possible, I have often camped in areas where staking would not
work, and rain proof, I just hate getting wet at night. Any thoughts?

This falls under ignorance is bliss (a good thing sometimes). Some of my best
camping trips were early on when I grabbed anyting I had and put it in a cheap
Boy Scout napsack and headed off for a couple of nights in the woods. Now I
look back and say what was I thinking. But they were good trips. I am often
envious of those who with minimal knowledge use what they have and go touring.

Sounds interesting, I will look that up. One of my camping rigs is my Atlantis
with a Hoss and a Boxy Baggins. I have done 4 day trips with this hauling 15
to 20 lbs of gear. This is possible because I am lucky enough to have aquired
a good set of ultralight (and expensive) gear and I am willing to ruff it more
then most. When my wife and I do a camping tour we carry more gear and gear
that is more comfortable (heavier). On these trips more time is spent in camp
especially if we are in a group so the trade off of more comfort and weight is
worth it.

In my mind a Rambouillet would be a better bike. If it was the only bike I had
I would use it for touring. My friend who road Bikecentennial in '76 has
commented that most of the people used racing bikes or sport touring bikes
since not much else was available at that time. And most finished the trip and
had a good time doing it.

RE: [RBW] Re: JB Green not really up to loaded touring

2011-09-22 Thread Larry Powers

Isn't that fast lively feeling pretty much gone on a loaded touring bike? I
ride belted tires on all my bikes, Pasela Tourguards, Ruffy Tuffy or Jack brown
Blue. I am a heavy rider anyways and I hate changing flats so I do not have a
problem riding belted tires. Jack Brown Blue are the tires I am putting on all
my bikes that can fit them. We have been using them on our tandem where the
rider load alone is just over 400lbs and had good results. We even spent a
week loaded touring on the tandem without a flat.

Loaded touring requires different tools that light sport riding. My Atlantis
is not as light and lively as my Rambouilet but I would not take the Rampouilet
loaded touring.

RE: [RBW] why do people like front rando bags?

2011-08-26 Thread Larry Powers

I can agree with all that has been said and will add that I have many put miles
on my Rambouillet using one of the largest Berthoud handle bar bags. The key
here is that bikes are optimized for certain things but this doesn't mean that
aren't adequate for others. I do notice the bag when climbing a 12% grade at
4mph especially when I am well into a 600km ride. This is a very small
percentage of the time that I am on the bike and once I am over 5 or 6 mph I
don't notice the bag. I do keep my tools in a rear bag which helps minimize
the weight up front. The ability to reach food, a hat or arm warmers while
riding can't be beat and there is no better place for a map or queue sheet then
the top of the bag.

I've been admiring bags and racks on the Rivendell Flicker site:

pondering the purchase of a larger bag. I've used Acorn Saddlebags for awhile

bags instead of saddlebags? Doesn't the weight foil your quick steering
ability? And isn't it always better to have weight low and in the rear for
stabililty? Thanks for your comments and a favorite bag if you've found one.

RE: [RBW] Looking for a 62cm Rambouillet

2011-07-26 Thread Larry Powers

I would look at the Homer Hilson if you are looking for a good all around bike.
I love my Rambouillet but if I missed out on the, I would be looking at the
Hilson for a randoneuriung/club ride/light touring bike. My one complaint
about the Rambouillet is that It won't take 32mm tires (with fenders) which are
my favorite size. If you want a go fast bike look at the Roadeo but if you are
commuting with bags then the Hilson is probably the better bike. The
Rambouillet kinda of splits the difference between the two.

RE: [RBW] Re: 650b Rim Woes

The twing hollow isn't bad looking. I am leaning towards the VO rims since
this is a touring a trail bike. I may then get the Twin Hollows to build up a
backup set of rims.

RE: [RBW] Re: 650b Rim Woes

2011-07-26 Thread Larry Powers

The rims are two large in diameter. It is nearly impossible to get the tires
on the CR18's even in the shop with heavy irons and impossible on the road with
plastic tire irons. On the ZAC's it is hard to get the tires on but it is not
terrible. The bead won't seat in the rim though. There is always a point
where the bead is too low and won't come up making for a nice low spot in the
tire. Both documented problems that I found after I bought.

[RBW] 650b Rim Woes

2011-07-25 Thread Larry Powers

I have had bad luck with two sets 650b rims, CR18's and ZAC-19's. Both are
oversized and unusable. The CR18's are my go to rims for commuting and touring
since they are a sturdy, functional rim and a reasonable price. I need to find
a set of rims for my wife's Bleriot and I have been unable to find a rim at the
price point and quality of the CR18's. My only current options appear to be
the Velocity, VO and Grand Bois. The VO rims seem to be the closest to what I
am looking for. Have I missed any rims?

Thanks.

RE: [RBW] Re: SimpleOne gearing

2011-07-07 Thread Larry Powers

How often do you shift your QB? You have 3 speeds with your setup, what
percentage of the time do you ride in each? I am guessing that one gets 80 or
90 percent of the use.

I really like the idea of my QB having two gears. I changed gearing once on a
ride just to see how quickly I could do it. Other then that I have never
needed to change the gearing for the 40x17 combination I normally use. The one
situation I can see where having a lower gear would be helpful is for a head
wind on a long ride. Maybe a 4 or 6 tooth different would be the right set up
for me. I would not shift for steep rollers because you would need to do it at
the top and bottom of each climb. I would rather walk a bit then do that. If
I lived out west then a lower gear for the long grades might also be helpful.

Just curious how others are using the gears on their QB.

No not at all- I use the 16/19 on my QB and it's very handy. Typical gears
you'll use are 40/16, 40/19, or 32/19 (Or in my case 32/22 since there is a 22t
f/w on the flipside), so you'd set up your chain length for that. You
wouldn't want to shift from 40/19 to 32/16 even if the dropouts were long
enough, since those two ratios (57" and 55") are virtually the same. You can
always adjust your effective chain length to within 1/8" with a half-link but
it's not necessary.

RE: [RBW] Re: Hunqapillar or Atlantis or....?

2011-07-07 Thread Larry Powers

Per Riv:

The Atlantis is our most versatile bike, our best-seller, and as evidence of
its mature design, is virtually unchanged since we introduced it as our first
production bike in 1999.75. It is ideal for loaded touring, trail riding,
commuting, and general riding where you're likely to want tires 35mm wide or
wider most of the time, and fenders a lot of the time. Around here, we have a
saying: You can do anything on an Atlantis. Because you can.

The Atlantis is a stout over built road touring bike. Riv lists its heaviest
use as loaded touring (road touring is implied). The heaviest use of the
Bombadil is loaded trail touring so by Riv standards this bike is built for
heavier use. By normal standards both are over built and bomb proof. I would
not hesitate to do an off road tour on my Atlantis.

Maybe someone can shed some light on this. Based on the way Rivendell shows
the bikes in pictures the Atlantis seems to be designed as a road bike and is
optimzed for drop bars. The Bombadil seems to be designed as a mountain bike
and is optimized for upright bars. The Atlantis is built heavier then most
production mountain bikes and in the past people have built them up with
upright bars and used them for trail and mountain bikes. As Riv says you can
do anything on an Atlantis. I think the Bombadil is just optimizing a bike for
this use.

Different bikes for different people and uses. My Atlantis is built up for
loaded road touring but dirt roads and single track could be toured as well.
Aesthetically I do not like the double top tubes and none is offered on any of
the Atlantis sizes. I don't mind the extra lateral tube but the Atlantis does
not suffer from not having one. If I were to own one bike it would be the
Atlantis. It is probably the most versatile bike for me (I have no interest in
riding anything more technical then smooth single track). I am lucky enough to
own several several bicycles and between them I can choose the one most suited
to the ride of the day.

The only point to this is that the Atlantis should not be dismissed because it
the oldest bike in the Riv stable. It has lasted this long for a reason so
take a good look at all of the frames and pick the one that you like best and
get out and ride.

2011-07-06 Thread Larry Powers

Fighting words! The most beautiful paint job on a a bike is the original
Orange Rambouillet. It was a unique and gorgeous shade of orange with a cream
head tube.I also like the paint on the Atlantis, it is good looking, it has
been the only stock color of the bike since it went into production and when
you see the color you know exactly what bike it is. A true classic.

The Atlantis is a very stout touring bike although it was not designed to be an
off road touring bike. Mine is a 61cm frame and I would not hesitate to loaded
tour on dirt roads and single track with it. I don't know how the bottom
bracket height compares to the Hunqapillar but if one is higher then the other
then it may be better for more technical terrain. The other issue is if the
bike will get rough use why not go with the lower cost bike since you will not
feel quite as bad the first time it gets a good bash on the trail.

You will be happy which ever way you go.

RE: [RBW] Different Pedal Question - M324's

2011-06-03 Thread Larry Powers

I have contemplated the possibility that this was the cleat/pedal interface
clicking. I have tried holding my feet in different positions without much
luck. I also can't tell if it occurs when my right foot is fully weighting the
pedal or when the left foot is completely unweighting its pedal.

I have different pedals on now and will try it tonight to sse if it goes away.
If it does, I need to decide if I want to use the M324's with the click or use
a less versatile pedal.

tightened the pedals in the cranks also with no results.

I am currently 220lbs. I don't hear the click when riding on the flats, I
don't hear it if I am out of the saddle and climbing at a fast cadence. I do
hear it when I am climbing a steep hill at a slow cadence. I can also get the
click to happen if I am spinning on the flats and then just stand and put all y
weight on the pedals. I can't do this consistently enough to get it to happen
when I am at the bike shop.

Questions: Has anyone else experienced this with these pedals? Does anyone
know if these pedals can be adjusted?

Thanks

[RBW] Any Plans For A New RBW Wool Jeresy?

2011-04-19 Thread Larry Powers

I know that this list is monitored by certain people at RBW so I am posting
this here. Are there any plans for another run of wool RBW jerseys? My blue
and green ones are getting kind of old and I am in the market for a new one. I
like the graphics of the RBW jersies and that would be my first choice if
available. If there are plans to do a run this year then I will gladly wait
but if not I will need to purchase something else pretty soon. Maybe a nice
dark red or deep yellow jersey.

Thanks.

RE: [RBW] SimpleOne News...

2010-12-17 Thread Larry Powers

I was giving serious thought to buying a second QB and the red color of the
prototype sold me. But the fact that the new QB does not use cantilever
brakes is a deal breaker. I think for any bike using tires this size that
cantilevers (or v-brakes) provide more flexibility and better stopping power
then the center pull/side pull option. I will be looking for a used QB or
maybe have to have a light weight single speed built with couplers.

RE: [RBW] Brave, Foolish, or maybe necessary?

2010-12-10 Thread Larry Powers

I have bright lignts (front and rear), reflective vests and straps, studded
tires and warm clothers. I ride year round and this time of the year it is not
possible to commute to work with out riding in the dark on at least one leg of
the trip. I try to come in before the morning rush and leave before the
aftneroon rush so that I am not on the most congested roads at the peak of rush
hour.

RE: [RBW] Any Tandems?

2010-11-10 Thread Larry Powers

I will agree with most of what was said below but I will add that Cannondale
tandems still seem to be one of the best values for the dollar in a new tandem.
My stoker (wife) reports that the ride is much harsher on the C'dale then our
lugged steel Bilenky Tandem. The thudbuster seat post softens up the C'dales
ride significantly.

The problem with used is finding one that fits both of you. If you can find
one they will be much cheaper then new. Santana makes a good bike but often
specs parts that are not standard on Tandems so you have to work a little
harder to find them or have a local Santana dealer that you deal with.

Good luck.

RE: [RBW] Big guy advice

2010-07-27 Thread Larry Powers

I have a Rambouillet and an Atlantis. The Atlantis is a work horse that can
haul a load and is fun to ride unloaded. I have ridden 200k brevets on it when
my Rambouillet was out of commission. The Rambouillet feels more lively when
unloaded and will always be my first choice for unloaded riding. I have even
done Inn to Inn touring on the Rambouillet bike. I currently weigh 210, have
been as high as 230 and as low as 200. I have not been disappointed by this
bike.

It is my understanding that the Hilsen tubing falls in between the Rambouillet
and the Atlantis. I think given your description this is the bike you are
looking for. I will offer this, if you aren't sure call Rivendell. I have
found that they are very good at matching bike and rider and they won't steer
you wrong.

RE: [RBW] Cross Country Trip

2010-07-16 Thread Larry Powers

Sounds like incompatable goals to me. You want to go cross country in 5 weeks.
If is is 3000 miles and you ride 6 days a week then that is 5 weeks of 100 mi
days. If you are feeling old and out of shape is that realistic plan? What
can you see or learn or enjoy along the way clipping along at that pace? With
a sag wagon 8 weeks sounds like a reasonable time to do this and be able to
enjoy it. Otherwise you are doing a personal version of RAAM.

I think if you organize your own tirp you should be able to do it for much
less. We did a one week trip last year and it coast us less then $200 per
person. We cooked dinner and breakfast in camp most nights and stayed in
campgrounds. We did have a sag wagon and they would do the shopping during the
day and we had crews at night to cook and clean. We were lucky to have a
dedicated driver but others rotate the driving duty between the riders. We had
a ball. Check Adventure Cycling's classifieds, they have people doing all
kinds of rides including sagged rides.

My Atlantis is about 5 years old and is hanging on the wall as a reminder to
myself that I will ride cross country when I turn 55(only 2 years away). I do
ride it a few times a year to make sure it is in good shape and did a one week
self contained trip on it last year, but it is definetly a symbol and reminder
that there are more important things in life then just work. I want to do this
twice, once by tandem with my wife on Norther Tier and once solo on my Atlantis
on the Trans AM. Back in '76 I was aware of Bikecentenial but I had never
toured and only had a Crit bike. It was only years later that I realized what
I missed.

As for as on topic for this list, why not, Rivendell makes the Atlantis which
is a touring bike. I might suggest the Touring list since there are probably
many more people there who have more experience with the type of issues your
are working through.

Good luck

We all do silly things at times and my Bilenky tandem is one of those things my
wife and I did. I still love this bike and may get to actually try out the
couplers this year.

Re: [RBW] Time For New Riv Wool Jersey

Last "Rivendell" one was the green with maroon band. Everytime I wear that,
it inevitably gets positive comments. One of the really non-standard and
beautiful color combos which Riv came up with. To my eye, it has a really
timeless quality.

My old blue one has a hole in the chest area I need to mend.

Hmmm.

Grey/Blue with orange band? Kinda Hunqa-esque...

what other color combos catch the attention?

I think folks tend to shy away from the white jerseys, just for fear of stains
and dirt.

I don't know about Suzue hubs, but many, if not most sealed bearing hubs
require a specialized press to extract and press in new bearing sets. Some
bike shops do have them and can do the job fairly easily. It's not a DIY job
unless you have such tools (which cost WAY more than a new set of hubs).

Start calling bike shops or machine shops. You'd be surprised who can help
with this one.

RE: [RBW] Your Favorite Handlebar Bag

2010-06-10 Thread Larry Powers

The bag I find the most functional is my Berthoud Handlebar bag that sits on a
small front rack and uses a decaleur. These come in sizes based on the height
of your bars from the rack. I purchased one with leather straps and buckles
but I would recomend one that uses elastic and hooks on all the pockets. It is
much easier to access the pockets while riding with the elastic. I have a Boxy
Baggins and and a C'dale bag that mounts just to the bars. As the amount of
weight goes up the Berthoud bag impacts the bike handling the least. I am
using this bag on my Rambouillet and find it works very well. There are three
factors that may account for this, the bag and therefor the weight is lower,
the bag sits closer in to the bars and most of the weight is supported by the
rack. I will be adding a Decaleur and rack to my Atlantis and this bag
combined with my Hoss should make for a good minimalist touring rig.

Maybe this is a better question for a frame builder but would wider tubes solve
the problem just as well as a double top tube? My steel tandem uses slightly
oversized tubing to add some rigidity. Given the size of the bike the wider
tubes look appropriate. On something like a 66 or 68 frame I would think that
31.8 tubing might allow a standard diamond frame to be used.

RE: [RBW] Rambouillet white out!

2010-03-31 Thread Larry Powers

Looks good to me:
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2269/1814472887_ce512baab9_b.jpg

Not easy to see but the bike had just been toured for two weeks and the 750
miles in 4 days of rain and the tape was pretty gray:
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2173/1760792941_8a1ef9e248_o.jpg

Most of the dirt can be washed off using simple green so it isn't that hard to
keep the white tape reasonably clean. The biggest issue I had was after
changing a tire and handling a dirty chain on the side of the road. The grease
on my hands left a stain that did not come completely out. Rubber gloves or
some had wipes in your bag would be a good idea.

RE: [RBW] canti homer?

2010-02-10 Thread Larry Powers

A call to Waterford will get you what you want. Ask nice for a bike built to
AAH specs but with canti breaks. It will say Waterford on it but you know what
you really have. You could also ask Riv if they could do this or if you do it
can you have it badged as an AHH. I would like a light weight single speed
randonneuse. A Rodaeo spaced 120 with QB drop outs would be just right. I
would really like to have it badged as a Rodaeo SS

Given all the various rubber componds available you would think that it would
be possible to create a solid tire that would ride like a pneumatic tire.
Probably isn't anyone's priority.

RE: [RBW] Re: 32mm Tires on A Rambouillet

2010-01-15 Thread Larry Powers

Based on may miles of touring, commuting and riding brevets I have found that
for me (a rather large rider) the Ruffy Tuffy is the best all around tire I
have found. They road well and rarely flatted until they were nearly worn out.
I found them very dependable. The GB's are a slightly faster tire but are not
as sturdy. I use them for brevets and don't let them get to worn out before
changing them.

This is all a moot point since Grant has indicated that he may soon be retiring
the Ruffy Tuffy and the Rolly Polly. I will probably switch to 28mm Tourguards
for general use on my Rambo. If I had a bike that could fit Jack Browns I
would use them. I actually do use them on my Tandem and will probably switch
to them on my QB and Atlantis when my current Tourguards wear out. The belted
tires will be sturdier and the non-belted are faster. Which to use depends on
your riding conditions the only way to know is to try each and see how they
work for you.

Larry, can you comment as to the ride quality and flat-ability differences
between the Ruffy Tuffy and the Cypress? I'm currently considering between the
two and haven't read any head-on comparisons between em.

RE: [RBW] Re: 32mm Tires on A Rambouillet

2010-01-14 Thread Larry Powers

I did run Grand Bois 30's sith SKS 35's. Clearance was tight as you described
for the 45's and there were a lot of pebbles that scraped their way through.
The clearance was tight and while I never had a problem while riding I often
had to adjust the fenders after transporting the bike.

RE: [RBW] 650b Rambouillet

2010-01-13 Thread Larry Powers

I think my spring project is to get 32 mm tires working on my Rambouillet by
changing the current Shimano brakes for Tektro R538's. If I can get this to
work then the Rambouillet would be everything I need in a bike. I currently
run 32mm Pasellas on my Quickbeam and for general purpose use they are great.

If I recall correctly the Rambo is not a could candidate for a 650b conversion
becuase it has low bottom bracket to start with. Someone let me know if this is
not true.

Larry Powers
[lots of replies, mostly that it's not possible, or not desirable...]

Larry:

I did this with my 68cm Redwood (functionally identical to the Rambouillet),
because I found that 40-42 mm Hetres would fit. This makes the drop equivalent
to a 21-23 mm tire -- not that different from the 28mm tire around which the
Ram was built. I also ride 175mm cranks on this bike, and sometimes pedal
through corners. Not a big deal, no problems with pedal strike. I did the
conversion because 32mm tires with fenders simply aren't big enough for my
190lbs and commuting load and the terrible, terrible streets here. The Hetres
make a huge difference. I also find that I like the handling of the bike
better with these much wider tires, and that it's more comfortable, although
the bike is so comfortable with narrower tires to begin with that for this
reason alone the change wasn't necessary. There's also a lot more fender
clearance with the Hetres on this bike -- I kept having to readjust my
anonymous old Japanese metal fenders when I was running 700C/32s.

So I think the change might be quite helpful for anyone who needs much wider
tires, and probably not necessary for others. It just depends on your weight
and local road conditions.

One caveat: I do find that the greater diameter of 700C/37mm Paselas causes
them to handle gaps in the pavement and potholes (the ones one can't avoid)
better than the 650Bs, even with Hetres - this even while the Hetres are
otherwise more comfortable. (I say "I find.." because this is simply an
impression -- others undoubtedly have other impressions) Somehow the larger
diameter wheels feel more proportional to me, at 6'6"/190, and to the height of
my bike.

2010-01-13 Thread Larry Powers

If I recall correctly the Rambo is not a could candidate for a 650b conversion
becuase it has low bottom bracket to start with. Someone let me know if this
is not true.

[RBW] 32mm Tires on A Rambouillet

2010-01-12 Thread Larry Powers

A couple of people have posted that they have run 32 mm tires on a Rambouillet.
I have run 30mm tires with 35mm SKS fenders and Shimano long reach brakes. It
was a very close fit using Grand Bois 30mm tires.

What brand tires have you used to do this? It seems the height of the tire is
the limiting factor so a round tire would work better then a tall oval shaped
tire. I have thought about experimenting with the wide mouth brakes to see
what is possible. Another thing I have wondered about is rims. Does a wide
rim give a lower profile to the tire then a narrow rim? My current wheels are
built with Open Pro rims.

I would be very interested in hearing how you made this work and what type of
fender/tire clearance you had.

[RBW] Feeling Abondoned

2010-01-12 Thread Larry Powers

I took a nice tour on my Atlantis this past summer, I commute daily on my QB,
my wife and I toured France on our Rambouillet and Bleriot (I also completed
PBP on my Rambo) and my wife likes to tool around our neighborhood on her
Glorius. We like Riv bikes and have bought our share. I know things change
and can understand moving production to Taiwan because of the exchange rate. I
guess the thing that pushed my buttons was to read that the Ruffy Tuffy/Rolly
Polly tires will be discontinued. When I bought my Rambouillet it was touted
as unique because it could use a large 28mm tire with fenders. Ruffy Tuffy
tires have been my tire of choice for this bike and now Riv has abandoned both
the bike and the tire. I believe that the Homer Hilson is the bike that Grant
really intended to build when the developed the Rambouillet. But the parts
available at the time placed limits on the design. The availability of longer
and wider brakes finally allowed the Hilson to be built. I like the Hilson but
having a Rambo and an Atlantis it is hard to justify the purchase of a bike in
the middle.

Change is inevitable and I hope that Riv continues to sell Lugged steel bike
for a long time. I am very glad that I have my bikes because the new Riv's
with limited sizes and sloping top tubes are not as close to my vision of what
a bike should be. Hopefully they will maintain a few frames like the Hilson
for those of us who appreciate a more classic shaped frame. If the economy
improves maybe I will buy a Hilson or a Roadeo because I would really like to
ride Brevets on a 32mm tire. I also hope that they do not completely forget
those of us who supported them in the early years.

I think I will pour a nice glass of wine, sit in the garage and admire my bikes.

RE: [RBW] Re: Question about women's riding clothes (not for me)

2010-01-04 Thread Larry Powers

This is not just a problem for women. I am 6'1" and am just over 200lbs.
There are a couple of clothing lines whose 2xl is not large enough for me. Who
are they kidding.

I haven't been following this thread so this may have been brought up already
but my wife has had good luck with Terry for clothes. She can either wear
their XL or their 1X and they tend to have a reasonable selection in their plus
sized line.
