joke...

2002-06-21 Thread Achmad Mardiansyah

There are three engineers in a car; an electrical
engineer, a chemical engineer and a Microsoft
engineer. Suddenly the car just stops by the side of
the road, and the three engineers look at each other
wondering what could be wrong.
The electrical engineer suggests stripping down the
electronics of the car and trying to trace where a
fault might have occurred. The chemical engineer, not
knowing much about cars, suggests that maybe the fuel
is becoming emulsified and getting blocked somewhere.

Then, the Microsoft engineer, not knowing much about
anything, comes up with a suggestion, "Why don't we
close all the windows, get out, get back in, open the
windows again, and maybe it'll work !?" (Zareen
Shaukat)

I'm pretty new to linux. So go easy on me.
What I want to do is setup idnet so I am

pident is installed and running, but I still
get a: No Ident Response when I login to irc.
Is there a config file I need to edit?

Thanks

When I select the installation type in anaconda, Upgrade an existing system,
then press the Next button, a window comes up say something like search of
Linux partitions. The next display on anaconda is something like, Can Not
Find Any Linux Partitions. This leaves the Next button grayed out.

I tried adding the /dev to the fstab but that didn't work, although the

still doesn't find any Linux Partitions.

Dual Head support XFree86 on Laptop

Hi - I've set up RH 7.2 on a Toshiba Satellite laptop containing a
Trident Cyber 9525 video card, and was wondering if there was a way to
get support for using an external monitor as a second display (not
mirroring - I have that working fine right now) as you can under Win98.

I've searched a fair bit for info on this an so far can only seem to
find references to running XFree86 with dual head support when there are
multiple video cards installed - there seems to be nothing about support
for a video card with two outputs.

TIA - dan.

Sorry that was a typo... The correct fstab is:

You can change /etc/crontab and make the obvious line read

No. HTTP was not designed for wildcarding, and even Apache, though it

First make sure that it isn't dropping you to a console because of a
configuration issue with your video card. You can do this by typing "startx"
(without the quotes) and the command line once logged in. If everything
comes up fine, then you can proceed to do the following. If it doesn't then
you first need to fix that or else you may just cause yourself more grief.

So if "startx" works...

Log out of X.

Log in as root (or type "su -" and type the root password when prompted).

type "pico /etc/inittab" (I choose pico here because the learning curve is
nil) It's not the best editor in the world, but it is easy.)

Scroll through the file and look for a line that looks like this...
id:3:initdefault:

and change the "3" to a "5", so that it looks like this...
id:5:initdefault:

When you reboot, you will be given the GUI login.

Have fun,

Shane as I asked before what is the controller involved? If it was
part of the official VA line (and not a special configuration) it's
either a mylex raid, adaptec, or an on board ide controller. (Trust me

It is in reference to your processor. Apache runs on many things.

If you have a Pentium then you are 32 bit. If you have a
RISC system or Itanium or Hammer then you are 64 bit.

Don't worry though. They later realized that the 32/64 bit thing didn't
matter. You NEED to upgrade.

Yeah, annoying, isn't it? I did it the hard way ... modified a system
startup file. I won't give you the details, for three reasons:

- - We're now officially and completely off-topic.

- - My way works, but isn't orthodox. I ain't recommending it.

- - if you don't understand 'BSD startup files, you need to buy a book on
FreeBSD before you start mucking with them!

The "right" (Mac-ish) way to do it, I later learned, is to use Netinfo
Manager. The book I mentioned in my previous post will tell you how.

Good luck ... -d

Re: simple How To for samba 2?

2002-06-21 Thread David Busby

Chuck,
Edit the file /etc/samba/smb.conf to put your shares. I've included mine
as a sample. Then start up smbd. This can be done from the script
'/etc/rc.d/init.d/smb'. Then you should be able to get in.
In my smb.conf you can see the share 'root' points ot '/'. Not very
secure. Also to give clients full access to stuff (not reccommended but
possible try 'chmod --recursive 0777 /'. That opens up every file on
your system.

So basic steps
Edit the smb.conf file
% vi /etc/samba/smb.conf
Start Samba
% /etc/rc.d/init.d/smb start

If you want samba to start automagically then you'll have to tell your
machine how...on RedHat you can run 'setup' and then pick system
services and select 'smbd' and/or 'nmbd'.

Re: what's best for an old laptop?

2002-06-21 Thread Mike Davison

If you really want to run KDE, a graphical web browser and office apps
(StarOffice, etc) then you should not follow the pain-filled path of trying
to do so with 16MB of RAM. My laptop with 64MB is painfully slow with KDE.

A laptop with 16MB would make a good firewall or small access router. If you
want to find something useful to do with that old hw.

I found out what is causing the error messages: I run am-utils', amd and
that creates an entry in /etc/mtab which is parsed by quota to see what
filesystems to check for quota. The amd entry imposes a problem for quota
and it throws this error. Does anybody know where I would report this? I
couldn't find anything about the quota maintainers. Maybe the redhat-devel
list? Or buzilla?

I would recommend Redhat 5.x or even an older version of

Assertion Failure

2002-06-21 Thread Adam Cormany

I'm not sure if I'm in the correct mailing list so
if I'm not, please let me know.

In the last weeks time, I have installed Redhat 7.3
on a Quad Xeon and everything was going very smoothly except for one thing.
After about 26 hours of uptime on the system, a system wide wall message
of:

kernel: Assertion failure in
journal_commit_transaction() at commit.c:535: "buffer_jdirty(bh)"

was sent out. The system then locked completely and
had to be powered down by the power button. The system then ran normal again for
about 28 hours of uptime and then another system wide wall message was
displayed. The message was about the Assertion failure again. This time the
system did not completely freeze up, but it played havoc on the system. The
uptime load went from less than 1.0 to over 12.0 and commands were locking the
login sessions completely up.

Is this a known bug, and also, is there a fix? This
is a pretty nasty error since it has happened twice in a short amount of uptime
and everytime it has happened, the system needed booted. Please
help.

Thanks
Adam Cormany

Won't load gui!!! I am newbie.

2002-06-21 Thread Behn Humphrey

Ach!!

Just installed Red Hat 7.2 as a dual-boot os on a 1. ghz 256 mg ram pc that
is also running win98se.

Installation went fine (according to the book i was following 'Learning Red
Hat Linux') but when i boot up and choose to use Red Hat instead of dos it
doesn't go to a gui (i installed both gnome and kde).

Instead it goes to the text interface.

Also it does this weird thing where as it asks for the login the screen dies
for a second every 3-4 seconds. As soon as a login is entered and it is
asking for the password that problem goes away.

I have an ATI AGP Radeon VE graphics card.

PLEASE somebody be able to help me!!!

It's my first foray into Linux and i would like to start in a gui (my dos
skills... practically non-existent...)

Thanks much,

Mysterious sounds on X

Whenever I run my mouse over a link in a browser, or do various window

scrolling through a long web page in Netscape, it generates a long stream of
these sounds and obliterates anything else that happens to be making sound on

Does anyone have an idea what the interference might be coming from?

Re: (no subject)

2002-06-21 Thread Alan Harding

First off it may be easier if you populate a file called .fetchmailrc
this will allow you get around the password issue (if you want to)

in .fetchmailrc put a line as follows

poll mailserver.domain.com with proto auto user username there with
password password is user here

This will do the following

poll mailserver.domain.com - will poll the named server for mail
with proto auto - Will auto select the correct protocol
user username
password password- Self explanatory really, but if password is your
pasword then you may need to "" it

is user here - Will deliver to the local user on the machine

Hope this helps

7.3 - GUI install hangs at formatting / filesystem

2002-06-21 Thread Here and There

Hi,

I gave up on trying to fix 7.2, and
I have a few questions:

1) Is there a stable RH system
for an M7VIB mobo w/ Athlon 1800XP?
I don't have thousands of dollars to pay
(otherwise I'd use Sun or SCO or something).
I've 1GB ECC/DDR PC2100 RAM, hda=1.7GB
IBM, hdb=60GB Maxtor (both DMA, hdb is
UDMA/ATA100), 2 NICs, Riva TNT 16MB, and
that's it.

2) I'm now "trying" to install 7.3 and
the system hangs about 1/2 second into
formatting the / filesystem, at the
beginning of the actual install after
getting all info. Should I not use
the GUI? Anyone else having this bug?

Any suggestions?

TIA,
Michael

Re: Samba unable to connect to Windows Share

2002-06-21 Thread Paul F. Williams

You might try the following instead of smbmount

/sbin/mount -t smbfs -o credentials=/etc/rc.d/mount.server_name \
 uid=1000 gid=1000 //server_name/w$ /mnt/smb/server_name/w

where mount.server_name has contents such

user=root
password=roots_password

You most likely would like chmod 600 mount.server_name
to keep root's password hidden.

Re: Need to open some ports on RedHat 7.0

2002-06-21 Thread Joseph R . Erlewein

I think you need to find out if you're running some sort of firewall...
Because it sounds like you are (vnc problem mentioned as well)...
check to see if you're using ipchains or iptables. if you set up the box and you chose
defaults, you're using ipchains, since you have to manually move rh70 to iptables. If
you chose a security setting during setup, you've employed some sort of ipchains
ruleset.

lsmod should show if the modules is loaded, since I think by default it's modular.

The only other thing I can think of that's samba-specific is that if you try a *whole
bunch* of features right off the bat, you're setting yourself up for failure.
Correctly configured, samba works great. But there's a learning curve - how to set up
users, shares, sharing mode, type, and levels of access based on UID, GID, and auth. I
recommend starting with a BARE MINIMAL smb.conf and testing with a win station on a
local interface with no net connection until you gradually tune smb.conf and restart
smbd / nmbd until you're happy with the results. THEN TURN OFF ACCESS TO ANYTHING
OTHER THAN LOCAL MACHINES YOU WANT TO ACCESS IT FROM. This means ACL within smb.conf
_and_ a firewall rule.

cheers,
-jre

for the tracks, and all I got was 12 tracks of good ol' static. why did this happen?
did i not

Track-at-once or

dlopen problem!!

2002-06-21 Thread Ritesh Satia

Hi ,
I am working on a program that uses dlopen() . The platform is Red Hat
linux 7.1 (kernel 2.4.2-2) . I want to load a library
libreadline.so , through dlopen() and call one of it's functions
{readline()}. This library has some symbols (BC , PC , tputs ...) that are
unresolved . When dlopen() is called to load this library it fails saying a
symbol (BC) is undefined.
These symbols are defined in a library libncurses.so . If I try to open this
library through dlopen() first and then the library libreadline.so , then
also , dlopen() fails.
But if i make a program that uses a function{readline()} of libreadline.so
and try to link it with both of these libraries through
gcc program-name.c -lreadline -lncurses
it works fine. is it the problem of dlopen() and if possible is there a
workaround for this problem.I want to load these libraries dynamically only.

thanks in advance

Touchpad

2002-06-21 Thread Stefan Schaper

I am using RH 7.3 and I have a problem with using the inetgrated
touchpad
and/or the connected PS/2 Mouse. I already searched al FAQs and found
lot of other Users with the same problem but nowhere al solution.

At first some Informations about my system :
Notebook Lifetec LT9888
PII - 233 MHz
96 MB RAM
latest BIOS-Revision

RH 6.2 and 7.1 worked fine!

The Problem:

I have installed RH 7.3 and everything works fine. The System haven t

found a Mouse so I just configured it with mouseconfig.
Now if I just touch the integrated touchpad or the Mouse
no more Keyboard input is possible. The System still work but
no Keyboard Input is possible.
I have tried different Mousetypes. I have the same problem when I
haven t
connect the PS/2 Mouse so that only the integrated Touchpad is
functionally.
The only solution i have found is to use another Mouse-Device (serial
or USB)
which do not use the IRQ12 (which is shared with the TI PCMCIA
CARDBUS).
But of course I often touch the touchpad and then the system do not
allow
any Keyboard Input.

Is there any solution available?

3com nic not getting initialized

2002-06-21 Thread skylyn

Hi,

First the facts:

I'm running RH7.2. I have one NIC card. It's a 3Com EtherLink 10/100 PCI
3C905C-TX. The CMOS bios settings have Plug and Play disabled. There are
no IRQ conflicts with any other devices. The NIC card in the bios states
it is assigned IRQ 5. I have 3 machines "exactly" the same IN EVERY WAY,
this means identical, on a peer to peer network connected by hub that
has been tested and works. Uplink is off. IP's have been statically set
as 192.168.0.101 to 192.168.0.103 respectfully. Net mask is
255.255.255.0.

The Problem:

I can't ping anything. When I go into Network Configuration, the card is
visible. When I go into edit it confirms the IRQ is 5 but when I go to
close the window it states "Ethernet card can not initialize. Please try
again. (or something like that)

When I use the command: ifconfig eth0 192.168.0.101 netmask
255.255.255.0 up it states "No device found"

The 3C905C-TX NIC card is on the compatible list of NIC's but when I run
the sbin/service network restart I get an error stating restarting of
the *3C590* device has "failed" (something like that) So it is thinking
it has a 3C590 card even-though the Hardware Browser tool says that the
network device is a 3C905C card. I have a 3C905C card and this has been
double triple checked.

I have kicked this dead horse long enough and have exhausted my
patience. I am new to RedHat but an ol' pro to networking. Please,
someone help.

Upgrading the 3com drivers wasted one week of my time.

I see the same problem with the same 3com card with many other users out
there but no one out there has an answer yet...

Can you solve this riddle? Ask as many questions as you like. I am
usually at either email address above so reply to all when responding.

Thank you,

Scott Wilson

Time frame to Up2date for Apache?

2002-06-21 Thread Lloyd Duhon

With word that an exploit for apache is circulating on the net, for all
versions prior to 1.3.26, how long are we looking at for an Update to 1.3.26?

I'm referencing:

Internet Security Systems Security Alert
June 19, 2002
Apache HTTP Server Exploit in Circulation

Affected Versions:
Apache 1.3.x versions up to and including 1.3.24
Apache 2.x versions up to and including 2.0.36

http://www.iss.net/security_center

[root@sirius root]# rpm -qa |grep apache
apache-1.3.23-11

Any info would be greatly appreciated. I'm VERY nervous, as we JUST
recovered from 11 servers being hijacked by a child porn spammer using the
recently patched PHP vulnerability. It took most of my last three weeks
properly formatting and migrating all of those servers. To have to do it
all again would make me very unhappy.

nope
under osX i go from the finder to "go > connect to server..."
then the list that appears has "appletalk" and "local network"
clicking appletalk gives me everything apple
and local network gives me absolutely nothing

there's also a box at the bottom where i can type in the ip address
but without knowing the syntax i'm kinda sol

i tried typing in:
nfs://the.server.name/home/web/development /Users/username/server

and nothing came up
not even an error message

This may be a bit off topic, but I'm sure there are other Red Hat admins
wrestling with this. You have to dig a little to find this kind of
info, I'm afraid, so maybe I can spare you some trouble. The short
answer is this:

mount -o "-P" -t nfs server:/share /mntpoint

Alternatively, set up that share with the 'insecure' option in the
server's /etc/exports.

The problem is that Darwin requests a connection on what Unix
traditionally considers a secure port (below 1024). Either of the two
above methods will get around that.

For future reference, the best text I've found so far for info at this
level is "Mac OS X Unleashed" from SAMS. Many of the other ones
commonly found don't go into Unix administration details to a degree
that helped me at all.

what's best for an old laptop?

2002-06-21 Thread gregory mott

16mb is not much these days. many might mutter that the dump is best.

no way i'm gonna leave it with lose95. but, what would y'all suggest?

RH7.1+ insists on 40+ mb. i can probably get around it by installing on
something else, cooking up a slim kernel, and then copying over the disk
contents. since my linux experience is mostly redhat, this is the route
i may go, tho, b4 i got started with RH i had fiddled a bit with debian
and mu-linux, and did notice there are hundreds of others..

i'd like to get it going with something like kde, email, browser, and
office apps. may i hear from others who have something useful running
in 16mb?

I haven't been following this thread, but it appears your entrys :

LABEL-/
LABEL-/boot

LABEL=/
LABEL=/boot

Not sure if that is your problem, since I have never tried using
incorrect LABEL entry's but I suspect unless this is a typo that
it won't boot or install correctly.

I am trying to uninstall ntp.

2002-06-21 Thread David T Roth

I had installed ntp-4.1.1 and now I am trying to uninstall it. I am
using gnuRPM and the ntp package is not showing up to be uninstalled
either looking or doing a find. But when I try to install an earlier
version for redhat 7.0 it comes up saying that a later version is
already installed. I have tried to go in and remove the ntp package
manually but gnuRPM still says it is installed. Can you tell me where
and what file to edit to finish removing the ntp package. One of my
problems was with ntp-4.1.1 was that it kept asking for a library
libcap-1.0.1 or something to that effect. Does xntpd work with redhat
7.0 or is ntp-3.0.99k the only deamon that works. Are there any other
NTP deamons that I can use for free.

I have just installed redhat on this machine and found I was missing
some programs 'cc' and 'make'. Why is this did I not install some
package that I needed to. I usually install both Gnome and server
software so that when I do the install I have to go install package by
package rather then choose a server install or workstation install.

IPTables and FTP and stuch

2002-06-21 Thread David Busby

List,
I've got a 7.2 machine using IPTables to NAT my office to the internet.
All traffic works find except FTP. When my ftp clients issue the PORT
command the server responds with a 500 error. If I put my office hosts
on to our old NAT box to the internet the PORT command is sucessful. So
I'm thinking that there must be something wrong with my IPTables setup.
I've tried removing my DROP rules for my INPUT chain but it didn't
help. Any advice?

TIA

Nope, sorry. There is an issue with the current installer if fstab
contains 'auto' for the partition type. Since your fstab specifies ext3,
that isn't the issue.

Re: Hung on GRUB

2002-06-21 Thread Geoff Wright

Can you explain a little more clearly what your problem is?

It sounds like the master boot record was somehow overwritten.
You will probably have to reinstall grub. Did you make a grub bootdisk?

Hung on GRUB

I backed up the RedHat 7.3 on the external hard driver by the norther ghost software. However, After I had restored Red Had, I encountered the problem that the machine was hung on GRUB while rebooting.

Anyone know of it.
Your suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

using lilo instead of grub.)

Re: where can i find init.c source code ?

2002-06-21 Thread Jonathan Bartlett

I'm kind of curious why you would want to. Anyway, rather than modifying
the source you can just modify inittab. Use the "rungetty" program to run
bash on boot. You might even bbe able to put in a line for bash w/
input/output sent to /dev/console.

Re: eth0-static and eth1-dhcp suddenly dont work anymore

I'am uncertain of BOOTPROTO=static
if this should be none instead.
Can you bring up your connection by typing
/sbin/dhcpcd -n eth0 or
eth1 depending on what NIC you use to DSL router.

Can you post your /etc/fstab file?

Aware of that, but Ximian says it's not an issue, however I went back to
standard RH72 GNOME.

LABEL-/ /ext3 defaults 1 1
LABEL-/boot /bootext3 defaults 1 2
none /dev/pts devpts gid=5,mode=620 0 0
none /procproc defaults 0 0
/dev/hda5swap swap defaults 0 0
/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom iso9660 noauto,owner,kudzu,ro 0 0
/dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy auto noauto,owner,kudzu 0 0

Anything here?
