That is without perl, sendmail, openssl, openssh and some other garbage but with gcc and kernel headers. After I have succesfully copiled and installed latest versions of perl, openssl, php, httpd. Unfortunately, when I save files onto the share, they show up as being created and owned by username "nobody". The consequence of that is that files I create with Windows cannot be edited with Linux. Is there a way to set it up so that files I create in Windows show up as owned by my regular Linux user account? I have tried selecting "connect as different user" when mapping the remote drive in Windows, but that doesn't help. You can setup Samba access to USER instead of SHARE and you need to add users to linux box eg. you and your wife. When you suspect a faulty NIC, the best thing I can think of doing is running ping against the suspected faulty PC. This will tell you whether the PC is responding at it's most basic level. If it doesn't even respond to a ping AND your networking is set up properly (check ifconfig and maybe your routes) AND your firewall/intrusion detection isn't blocking the request AND your hub is OK (check the port lights) AND the NIC is active (again, check the lights) THEN yes, it is probably the NIC. All I'm trying to say is that it could be caused by a thousand things, and a faulty NIC is not the first thing I'd suspect (unless it's a really cheapo card I guess). Please advise how to make this. For starters, don't use webmin for editing the files. webmin has a lot of good points, but it makes it harder for you to see what's really going on. FTP servers need to be set up properly, and you need to understand what you're trying to do, rather than just clicking buttons. Go to a shell prompt and type out /etc/ftpaccess. Have a very careful read at what options are currently defined and then review the man pages to see what those options do. Pay attention to the following options: restricted-uid guestuser guestgroup With wu-ftpd, it's easy to set up an insecure server. Save your current ftpaccess file, edit it to reflect the options you want, and then test. You do not need to restart or reload xinetd - every new incoming FTP connection re-reads the ftpaccess file. The official Guest HOWTO is at http://www.wu-ftpd.org/HOWTO/guest.HOWTO Thanks for the link. Yes, my silesystem is ext3 and yes I am using correct partition which in my case is /dev/hdd1 and /dev/hdd2. This is an interesting update. You are trying this with two partitions? Doesn't that mean one of these is _not_your root partition? If that's the case then you should be able to test all this with the non root partition very easily without a kernel rebuild or boot time parameters. All you need for a non root filesystem is a proper entry in your fstab file. Before you get to that step though, you can test it all out on the command line. Still don't know what the issue is exactly with the "tune2fs" command failing for you (old version perhaps? what did you find in "man"?). If you're still stuck, post the results of running "dumpe2fs -h" against your non-root partition, and the command lines you've tried. Cheers, Sean hdd1 is a root partition and hdd2 is /boot partition. Hi Sasa, You're on the right track but you're caught up in some subtle issues. The one that is biting you the hardest is that the Redhat kernel has ext3 compiled as a module. This prohibits you from passing data=writeback as a boot parameter because the root filesystem has to be mounted (via ext2) before the ext3 module can be loaded. You have a few options to resolve this. One option is to compile your own kernel with ext3 compiled-in rather than as a module. A second option is to create an initrd image that is used at boot. You'll have to modify the initrd image so that the linuxrc script passes "data=writeback" when mounting the root filesystem. Ext3 does not allow the journal type to be changed once the filesystem has been mounted. Thus for a root filesystem you have extra hassles instead of using /etc/fstab alone. One thing i didn't mention before is the tune2fs option for setting the default journal mode: tune2fs -o journal_data_writeback /dev/hda2 Again i think the modular kernel will get in the way of using this but you can play around with it. good luck, Sean I have tried with the command you gave me and I get back nothing - wrong switch "-o". Then I have changed it to "-O" and I get back "wrong filesystem option set". If you want linux install the removable linux disk. With hard drives I don't think it is possible to have each independent without going through some gyration. When you boot the hardware wants to report all drives and thus the OS wants to mount it and if it doesn't recognize the partitions then you get an error. The change shown here will let ANY remote lpd client talk to your lpd server, which may or may not be what you want.
