Is site #2 line of sight and at what

be able to do this on about 1 watt and give you linking site receivers
an easier time.

To recap, What type of back to back link

  This can easily be done.

Moto also has some GR8 courses on training on their recent goodies such

in Texas. I have been debating to take some of their courses for Ham

working on my degree.

BTW if you want a rack there is in a warehouse in Central MI. has some
IT stuff like patch panels and ther may be a trade to some Rotary Dial
Phones 5xxx series with the brass ringers weather 1/4 mod or full mod
and brand name you could have any brand stamped, ( nobody cares ATT,
ITT, Kitt C. Western Electric etc.. its a die thing ) serious

  Hello All,
I remember reading somewhere (I think in an ARRL Handbook)
about a
project to install an ELT (Emergency Locater Transmitter) reciever at
a repeater site and link it into the repeater. I quess every time a
signal was received some kind of tone or something came over the
repeater alerting users that an ELT was going off. I am in Civil Air
Patrol and think this would be something nifty to have on my
repeater.
If anyone has built and/or used something like this I would like to
hear from you, thanks.

All of this politic stuff is no wonder why nothing gets done, maybe
someone should tell someone its time to retire and put in someone who
is not in there for a glorified title shot, I left one group in
Michigan turned in my radio and other people left after I did . i
nickednamed it the Chicken Band rescue Club and as far as this other
jerk he is King Chicken Band Leader.

Until the ARRL Fires the persons dont count on me, like the car ads 0%
interest thats my attitude of the ones here. I have better stuff to do.

lacks much in the way of people skills. On the other hand, a local
chapter, holds the amatuer community in very high regard. The higher you go

Seems to be the way of all politicians.. I, for instance, am having a lot

This is a little off topic, but with all the money spend on the Red
Cross ads with respect to Katrina (is anyone NOT tired of those?), I
asked my local ARRL Division Director why the ARRL is not spending the
money promoting Ham Radio at least in less expensive print form

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Handheld antenna on a Mobile Radio?

2006-02-27 Thread Mark A. Holman

Does it have a VSWR Sense circuit ? may be designed that way, also how
ABT adjusting RF output then rekey and watch the Watt meter SWR
if its 1:1:1 then you have something to work with otherwise a Magnetic
Antenna on a drop celing frame will work so long for UHF the square or
ciricle of metal is 6 inches or longer area old fridge, HVAC duct, old
Metal case TV will work on a magnetic, even a metal file cabinet, be
creative have fun.

great, but it was on UHF. A simple 90 degree Mini-UHF to BNC-F, BNC-M
on the antenna. I tried this (on our VHF Radio) and it seems to
either shut-down the radio or barely get any signal out. Is there any
secret to this or a certain antenna type that needs to be used? ie.
Base-loaded or Helical Whip.

2006-02-27 Thread Mark A. Holman

Just Depends on the Program Director or the Station Manager. or both
if their Cheif Engineer is a ham or Contract Engineer you may want to
see what his opinion, if he has had some bad experience from your local
club politics you may as well forget it.

CE's rule the roost, I'll clue an example, back to the AJs up here one
club repeater was politely moved out of the building CE was tired of
the crap! all of their equiptment was set outdoors in boxes, antenna
was taken down the whole 9 yards.

Next Time someone wants to get backstab happy or play AJ politics be
prepared to set your club station up in the garage. and better pray
that it does not rain the time it was taken down either.

I was at a meeting where some AJ roadraces lost their repeater site'and
this past week the Arbritron Ratings that station was in the top 5 in
this area. Marow of this story...

If you have a AJ Roadrace is about to do something like that better
contact above management for a replacement ASAP otherwise your stuff
may in boxes and singinging in the rain. or worse you was to be called
out and SOL !

just 4 fun ask them whats the diff between a Deviation and Modulation

Overmodulated on the repeater he was immediatley put in place.

I also use Kirchoff Laws and Thevins Theroem on people who try to
insult me and then give them a spin and watch them in total shock we
had a rash of stupidity insults lately and then I tell them I am
studying for an Engineering Degree afterwards also to add to their
insults I asked them who told them and where they get their info. from
which they did not plan that response they walk away with total shock
of what was that ?? ROFL

I've also added binary stuff at a Board I go to as a signature line
% 0100 no real interpet of code but sure stopped a couple people.

keeps their brain busy and possible overload.

Quote:
2) A diesel engine is subject to "wet stacking" or over

loads (less than 40% of the rated output). "Wet Stacking"
causes the engine to smoke and run rough because the
injectors become carbonized. Running a heavy load will
usually clean up the over-fuel condition and allow the
engine to perform normally. Diesel engines operate better
and more fuel efficient when loaded (70-80% is optimum).

If you wonder if its the 11 Meter Mantality if they thought a Killowatt
would operate a repeater they probably would install it !

between the golden screwdriver and crank up the output to full max and
the theory of heat, light smoke ! I seen a coffee machine smoke
a relay board here a few months ago.

also if they jump when a cap goes off like a fire cracker then they
might think twice !

I see lots of the same kind of mentality around here. Many of the local hams that figure "if a little gain is good, then a whole lot more must be a lot better." 40-watt PA decks driving 100-watt PA decks, receiver preamplifiers running wide open at high-RF sites, single-shield coax for jumpers, RG-8 type coax for feedlines, no isolators/circulators anywhere, etc. etc. Trying to explain or reason with them just falls on deaf ears, and I'm the

Then, after getting into a good repeater site, they continue to bring in (sneak in) more and more equipment (much more thn they had originally made arrangements for) without asking anyone who is actually involved with the site. Then they get kicked out of the site completely, ruining it for any hams who want to put up something in the same place (and do it properly!) in the future.

Randy,

I think the subject has been covered well enough already. Perhaps the best
analogy would be a Hewlett-Packard power meter, where the sensor is matched
to, and calibrated with, the meter itself. If the sensor should somehow be
destroyed by accident, one could not simply purchase a new sensor and expect
it to work with the existing meter. One must ship the meter and the sensor
back to the factory for alignment and calibration. Like the crystal and the
channel element, they are a "matched pair."

While I understand and respect the opinions of those who maintain that
Amateur Radio transmitters can embrace a much more relaxed level of
precision than commercial transmitters, I cannot help but wonder why this
feeling is so pervasive. My personal feeling is that the public impression
of Amateur Radio (notice the capitals!) is greatly enhanced when such
installations meet or exceed the workmanship levels found in a typical
commercial installation. Many others more vocal than I have lamented that
some installations by Amateur Radio licensees have been so amateurish that
they demean the name. I submit that an Amateur Radio repeater should always
incorporate the State of the Art, with the appropriate bandpass cavities,
isolators, filters, and components that will ensure a reliable, trouble-free
installation. Moreover, I cringe when I hear that a substandard
installation is okay, simply because it's "only" an Amateur Radio project!

I congratulate you on taking the high road to correct the problem with your
channel element.

2006-02-05 Thread Mark A. Holman
How about this..
Have something depending on your band Motorola has some decent HTs which
I am thinking like same freq I'll chart the idea here.

Channel 1 freq xxx.xxx Mhz. CTCSS A

Channel 2 freq same as 1 CTCSS B

Channel 3 freq. xxx.xxx different freq. CTCSS B or C

idea is one CTCSS tone can page , next on same channel can be working
channel 2 and Channel 3 would be available for more supervisory or
secondary work channel.

one area in a Major city actually has 3 CTCSS tones on the same channel
using some thing programmed to dispatch calls in different areas of a
city with 6 Channels in a 30,000 + population, also laptop
communications, 800 Mhz. circuits.

only recently had their Nextels taken away abuse of calling wife,
girlfreinds, etc.. taxpayers paid a big sum for private conversations.

and Nextel thought to make money by giving free Nextels to every cop in
the US !!! Cha Ching !

MI dosen't play well with others so IL and some other states are

I understand the idea of everyone grabbing a few files such that

a thorny issue. *Every* file there should be assumed to have a

it elsewhere. This of course does not apply to anything that says
it has been placed in the Public Domain, but even then, I know
a lawyer who dealt with a case of a file that said it was PD when
in fact it was not.

In order to create a new site, it is very advisable to contact every
author and get their permission for posting, and also to have
them put their license in the file at the header. If you can't
get ahold of the author, it shoudn't go on the site. Anything
written by someone now dead is still copyrghted by their

in a "DMCA take down notice"

The DMCA is the Digital Millenium Copyright Act. If you want

a type you can separate like a pool stick ? I may expect obviously not ,
so you may wish to check all carriers for something like that.
Burlington Air Freight , FED EX , just to name a few off the top. when I
worked shipping at night we configured box packaging and tape and more
tape , they were shipped in the right company.

UPS and FedEx have some crazy size and weight
limitations. At least the UPS web site tells me the
maximum length plus girth (essentially circumference
or square surface dimension) but FedEx is less
user-friendly.

Anyone have any experience shipping this kind of
thing? It's NOT a 22 ft Super StationMaster but it IS
one piece. I don't really want to spend hundreds of
dollars to ship it via a commercial trucking company,
especially considering what I'm paying for the

Thanks.

In terms of lightning, yes. In terms of static charge,
no. The straps had about a megohm of DC
resistance and, in cold, dry air they caused a charge
by being dragged along the road.

  Dick,
I've always looked at it this way-- A "good ground" is not required.
The strap would simply provide a leak to ground to prevent the
charge on the vehicle from ever reaching a level that could arc,
probably at the hose end where an arc to something could ignite the
vapors. And this charge would only be a problem while stopped and
preparing to dispense fuel. Maybe I'm wrong, but a charge on a
vehicle while traveling would not be a huge problem...

Anyway, you're right that these straps were probably not the best
idea, since they have been replaced by other static mitigation means.

Happy New Year!

Interesting that this would come up... Last year, before installing a
whole house furnace humidifier, I got zapped every time I reached for a
light switch (screws are grounded). Many times it would draw an arc of
1/4 inch or more. Just for the heck of it, I did a test. I put on my
shoes and drug my feet across the carpet and with a NE-2 neon bulb,
touched the screw on a convenient lamp switch. Many times I would build
up enough static electricity that I could make the bulb burn for about a
second, and sometimes it would snap (arc across?).

I took one of the Static Busters and put the end that gets mounted in my
mouth. I did the test again, and was very surprised that I couldn't
build up enough charge to make the bulb light.

the outside world need protective devices.

I'd suggest that you get a copy of PolyPhaser's grounding series that
explains all this in detail. I don't know where you might get a copy

For what you plan to do there is no reason at all to use concrete. Back
in the Sixties I helped install dozens of thirty and forty foot Rohn towers
for TV receivers and never used the first bag of cement when using a house
bracket. Many of these towers are still in use today.

With a good house bracket installation you should be able to go twenty
feet above the house bracket. Dig a hole about two feet deep and put your
first section in it. Put a couple of bricks under the two legs next to the
house. Put an inch or two of pea gravel in for drainage. If you do the house
bracket right (bolted into something very substantial) it will last forever.
Been putting them up this way for more than forty years but will quit when
the first one falls down.

A piece of Rohn 25 will break into before you can move it sideways if
it's two feet in the ground. I repeat, there is no good reason to use
concrete with a good house bracket install! Let the house bracket do its
job.

If you still feel you must use concrete at least keep the top of the
slab six inches or more below grade. That way when you move you can cut the
tower off below grade and there is no visable evidence that there was ever a
tower there. The tower should extend down though the concrete into some
gravel for drainage.

Coy,

I have a Simpson 260 in the back seat of my truck I service radios out of,
had it for about 12 years now with no problems but also carry a high dollar
digital meter for precision work. I have also tuned many radios with a
Fluke (or similar meter) but you have to remember some on this message board
have never tuned a radio before and they are just learning radio work. You
have to admit that the analog is better for beginners. I use Triplett's
630's as well as a digital on my shop bench. The 630's are Dinosaurs but
still work well and with the meter/voltage doubler turned on I would put it
up against the digital for tuning accuracy. Like you said, it's slower
using a digital.

Also, in 99.9% of the cases there is no reason to worry about 1/10 of a volt
in tuning front ends or exciters, the circuits are by design broader than
that. There is a part of the old Johnson LTR Trunk systems that have to be
set within a 1/10 of a volt but it not in any of the RF circuits.

One other thing I carry the Analog for is backup, it is very frustrating
when you get to a job site and find the battery in the digital meter is dead
and the spare battery is also dead or missing.

Agree to disagree,

Paul

Too bad they aren't gold plated - they'd be worth something.

With gold hitting $500/oz there are guys buying up all surplus
printed circuit boards that have gold plated edge connectors,
breaking off the gold plated fingers with Channelocks or
electricians pliers, tossing the bits into a chemical bath and
leaching off the gold.

Do you remember CH Surplus on Colorado boulevard?
I was in there on saturday looking for Bird thruline rack panels
and ran into a guy that I knew from Jet Propulsion Labs - he
was buying up older 3Com broadband cards from the early
80s to keep a system up there running.
Supposedly with the DC budget cuts JPL has next to zero
money for maintenance. They let go half the secretarial staff
last quarter (one secretary is now supporting over 100 tech staff).

He's lucky that recycle greed hasn't found CH... when
there are no longer any spare parts for older systems,
what happens?

One of the long time guys at CH said that a guy was in there
a few months ago who knew absolutely nothing about electronics,
test equipment or hydraulics (that's their current inventory) but
was asking what manufacturers used the most gold in their
products.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Tower Installation

2005-12-27 Thread Mark A. Holman

Also try Champion Towers they have some Gr8 insight of the what NOT to
do also it seems like they have a wind chart I think, good for knowing
what to expect.

Mark Tomany wrote:

  Doug,

  Try this link: http://www.rohnindustries.com/ROHNNET/rohnnet2004/html2004/index.html

Then click on "On-Line Catalog" on the left side of the page.
This will open a PDF screen on the page. Choose the "GT Series"
towers, then "25G", and finally "Foundation Details". You can print
these out if you need the "engineering diagrams" from Rohn for your
project. Also - you might want to bookmark this link - it does not
show up readily with a Google search... :-)

FWIW, I have a 60' Rohn 25G, set 4' in the ground and bracketed
to my house at 28'. (By design, the overall height is 56' above
ground.) I then have a 10' mast, with 6' above the crown of the tower,
and a Diamond X500NA to the top of that, and - until recently - a
Winegard super fringe TV antenna just below that. I also have three
other antennas side-mounted about 20' down the tower. This towerhas
survived 18 years now in northern Illinois, and recently only required
that some of the mounting bolts be replaced due to tower movement wear
on the bolts themselves - something that I'm told is a fairly common
issue. Once the bolts were replaced, the tower was again strong and
secure. A 30' tower will surely serve you very well, especially if you
decide to bracket that to your house.

As some have suggested, make certain that you get your approval
in writing before constructing your tower.

  Good luck on your poroject.

  My
last posting for 2005 with a question:

My home owners association with their CCR's and other regs [here
in my
community of Vail, Arizona] has "seen the light" regarding new FCC
legislation on antenna and tower installation parameters and height
restrictions. They [the association] recently sent me a monthly
Newsletter [December issue] which specifically acknowledges word for
word, that the "Federal Communications Commission [FCC] passed
legislation that prohibits associations from restricting individual
members from receiving adequate transmission signals".

Yes, I did after reading this fired off an email to the manager of the
association [this morning] asking that they send me what is called an
Architectural Improvement form so I can submit my "project"...to
install
a 30 foot Rohn tower for my 900 mhz antenna system and other antennas
related to repeater/remotebase and other link systems [a.k.a, antenna
farm on a tower].

My question on a typical tower installation and please keep in mind...I

have no experience in this area other then as a "helper" with other
installations years ago.

Can someone direct me to a website or specifically explain how best to
"lay the foundation" to install a 30 foot Rohn tower without guy wires.

Yes, I plan, once I purchase the tower sections [working on that with a

local Ham] to secure the second bottom section to the eave of the
house.
In short, I think I want to sink/install the first five foot section of

the tower into the ground, use rebar for added support and firmness,
pour cement to "fill the hole" at the base of a five foot section of
the
tower, then secure the upper section to the eave of the house with
steel
brackets [that I may have to have formed and bent to the right config].

I am new at this so any and all suggestions on/from this list would be
appreciated so very much. This will be my new 900 mhz repeater and
remotebase project for 2006!! The wife and I have been living in our
new home now 15 months and I really desire to install a quality antenna

system for the three repeaters I currently operate and maintain.

So please comment/send thoughts and suggestions on your own experiences

with tower installatons. I am looking forward to "getting my hands
dirty", digging the hole for the tower and rebar and pouring the
cement...and at age 62, I NEED the exercise!!

Jack objected to the immediate incarceration, but the Judge said these are
FEDERAL Felonies, and he has been found guilty, and will be remanded.

Sentencing will be on March 6, 2006 at 1:30 P.M. at the same court, Roybal

The reason for the delay in sentencing is for Mr. Gerritsen to be

are good for making repeaters, beacon transmitters, repeater receivers,
control receivers, power amplifiers, organ donors for other RCA gear, and

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Re: GMRS in USA

2005-11-28 Thread Mark A. Holman

What the mfgrs do is that they have to say for example ABC Brand Radio
Model number 123456789 they submit so many of that model number, the
units undergo the process with all the equiptment to see if they meet a
certain criteria something like this...

  Frequency Stability in ppm
Mike Audio weather AM FM or SSB
the spectrum analizer will show type certified signals filtered
to a certain db level
  Harmonics
any unusual frequencies are they supressed?
If say an RF Amplifier is it made to show Zero Db Gain on 26-27
Mhz. ( CB ) and cannot key the amp?

before the stamped OK is put on the documents the FCC wants to make
sure it will perform as stated besides would you want to hear endless
YACK YACK from a Dirty CB radio over your TV ? I have a Q. for those I
come into contact ... Say what if they decided to do away with all the
filtering, can you imagine going down the road listening to some pager
making all that DATA racket? makes these illegal operators think.

Now you get an idea why the FCC has these rules for Type Certified.

Paul Finch wrote:

  Johnny,

What constitutes the loss of the FCC type acceptance? Does anyone have the
rules section pertaining to this question? Like I said, the worst thing you
do to some of these radios is removal of the antenna switch which has caused
some interference problems with near field transmitters.

Reminds me of a small repeater I saw a dozen years ago. A regular
outhouse building, but with no throne, off in the woods, but on the
crest of a small hill. Inside was a pair of car batteries, a
Johnson UHF PPL 6060 radio and a mobile duplexer. On the roof was
a 2 foot by 4 foot solar panel facing south. Next to the building
and strapped to it was a 30 foot pushup mast holding a short
stationmaster.

Taped to the Johnson was a xerox of a GMRS license.

There is a GMRS conversion of a 6060 at repeater-builder.

If the interference is coming form a Part 15 device

Hi All,

We have run into a problem with some local interference getting into one of
our link radios.
It is believed to be coming from one of the TV home transmitters, that one
can buy from the local appliance shops.
It is producing a signal right on teh input of our link. I have put an extra
filter in line, but this did not fix it.
I really do not want to do through the hassel of trying to get another set
of freqencies at this stage.
Shoudl add that when the RX is receiving a signal from the TX link, it
overrides the interference nicely. The interference is just enough to open
the squelch.
Have thought about putting either CTCSS, or a newer DCS TX/RX boards in the
link system.
I have read somewhere that DCS is the better way to go. If this is the case,
where is the best place to purchase boards to fit inside our radios. We are
using Tait T345 and T346 gear.

Any information will help point us in the right direction.

it was OK for small-faced towers, it's not great for larger towers where the
horizontal and diagonal members start to behave like parasitic radiators,
converting the Vpol radiation to slant and horizontal pol. I have a copy of

All that was attached to those radios were 2 UHF linking radios wired back

when one radio is transmitting. I have no idea what gauge of wire was
used. They'd been there for at least five or ten years if not even

Intership communications are usually VHF, and in-ship UHF.
In that case I'd use a UHF repeater with the duplexer antenna
port feeding a Radiax system that goes throughout the ship.
The Radiax cable will "leak" RF everywhere and allow
inter-
compartment comms just fine.

Over the last 10 years a local company has installed over
20 miles of Radiax in the basements of buildings, in parking
garages, etc You put a small antenna at the far end,
and run it wherever you need signal. In a building you put
the radio in the basement and run Radiax up the elevator shaft
to an antenna on the roof. The building security folks can
talk anywhere on their handhelds plus for a few blocks around
the building The owner can tell stories about building
inspector after building inspector having to be educated that
this is one cable that you CAN'T put inside conduit... no
matter what It's made in plenum and regular type and you
had better order the right type the first time...it's not cheap.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Illegal uhf repeater

2005-08-20 Thread Mark A. Holman
Your 1st. Step should be the Repeater Coordinator Council that is their
job to eliminate any paper repeaters in the system, and to
coordinate you a frequency and you will need to establish as a
Corrdinated Repeater, according to the FCC Rules 97. 205 (c) . and the
thing is if you are uncoordianated, you will have to resolve any
interference to the Coordinated Repeater.

So as a Sugguestion being coordinated you can look into a frequency thru
the council to see if you can find a quiet place to put up a repeater
and based on where you may be a pancake flat terrain neighboring
repeaters are so many miles away and using a CTCSS squelch would be a
GR8 idea.

Mark AB8RU
also check arrl web site for further asistance.

also I took a class back in 1984 that Meter Socket after you get an

meter stuck to your head and someone gets to use first aid on you or
the EMS people are saying you ok !?

fire last year.Someone placed some combustible liquid next to a space

fire was contained.
Another thing people should be aware of is the MOV's in low
quality plastic multi AC strip outlets. These cheap MOV's
sometimesshort out and become very hot, resulting in melting the
plastic multi outlet, then burning your house down. I hear this type of
problem happens more than people realize. MOV's are good, they do a
decent job and serve a useful purpose. But don't rely on a 30 cent item
to protect everything in your home. Purchase a quality large MOV
capable of handling a good amount of joules from an electrical outlet
supplier. Install it on your service breaker panel box. It will
protect your whole house. Check with your local electrical code prior
to doing this. Many people are unawaresome lightning shots inter homes
via the telephone line, not the AC line. MOV's are available for them
also.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Repeater interference problem cured. Caused by Uniden scanner a mile away.

2005-08-15 Thread Mark A. Holman
Very Interesting Mark , I know that in the past I recall vaugely that I
have came accross some sort of oscillation that can be picked up on a
particular frequency but the distance you mentioned is something that
each of us can probably came across this some time or another.

Meanwhile back 2 the auctions.

Mark AB8RU

Mark Ramsey wrote:

Whew after nearly a year of interference to my uhf amateur radio
repeater I found the problem. Turned out to be a Uniden scanner more
than a mile away from repeater site! The local oscillator for
channel 7 in the scanner was right on frequency for the repeaters
input and was tripping the repeaters squelch every time it scanned by
about once a second. The interference could not be heard from a
mobile radio tuned to the repeaters input but could be heard well
from a hand held hooked to the repeater antenna (db420). Many
attempts had been made to find the trouble by driving around
listening for the clicking sound generated by the scanner with no
luck. By this time I had figured out it was a scanner causing the
trouble because the problem would go away when there was activity on
virtually any of the local police or fire channels, the scanner
would stop scanning by channel 7 and the repeater would quit
kirchunking. Completely fed up (can't take no more) I decided to
take a different approach. I found by transmitting on one of the
public service channels the scanner could be made to stop on that
frequency, Yes I realize this not exactly legal but remember I can't
take no more. Anyway after a few short transmissions away from the
repeater site I found the general area. Now in that area I am able
to switch on my service monitor and transmit a weak signal and
attenuate it as I get closer the whole time listening to the repeater
kirchunk. Finally I must be close I can hear the interference on my
ht tuned to the repeaters input. Bad news it is an apartment complex
with about 100 units crammed in a small area. Time to walk around
complex with ht and listen. Wow now I have narrowed it down to 4
apartments! Let's talk to some of the neighbors standing outside.
One person said it's got to be that mean old lady across the street
she's got a scanner but you don't want to knock on her door she is
just plain mean. Walked over there with ht, no problem not there
thank goodness. Talked to someone else she said I know everyone
here except apartment 4 and I can tell you no one has a scanner. I
thanked her and knocked on apartment 4 door not knowing what to
expect would they be nice would they be mean would they be
understanding would they be home? The door opened one glance into the
living room revealed a Uniden scanner. I explained the situation to
the gentleman at the door who turned out to be one of the nicest
people I have ever met. He allowed me access to his scanner and the
channel causing interference to my repeater was one he doesn't even
listen to nothing even in the area on that frequency. We programmed
another frequency into channel 7 he's happy I'm ecstatic and the
problem is cured. Thank you I said and drove home. Can you believe
this? It's true.
