RE: [RollTideFan] All I Want To Say Is...

Auburn was two wins away from the Sugar Bowl. Jerry Palm
(CollegeBCS.com) is now projecting the following:
Florida to the Orange Bowl
LSU to the Sugar
Arkansas to the Independence
Auburn to the Peach
Tennessee to the Citrus
Georgia to the Outback
Alabama to the MCB

This was his picks as of this morning.

If Georgia stays home (in the Peach), who goes to the Outback?

-Original Message-
The way I understand it, if the Peach Bowl takes Georgia over Auburn,
the
MCB will take BAMA and possibly leave Auburn out of a bowl altogether.
If
they take Auburn over Georgia (being in Atlanta they are pretty much
assured
of a sell out if they take the Bulldogs), the MCB would have to take
Georgia
based on their order of finish in the SEC.

Scott,
Your level won't make the cut, probably (unless you're rich).

Mike does have a point, it's easier to get tickets from the bowl
directly than from TP. BUT... the University benefits if you buy them
from the University. If you buy them from the bowl itself, the
University doesn't get credit for the sale, which could impact future
bowl bids.

THAT was my point. Also, it was mentioned on Coach Fran's site. :)

2001-12-08 Thread Hugh Wolfgang

Would have the same problem as the current system does if Tennessee
LOSES, and would have a problem if they WIN, too (which one of Colorado
or Nebraska gets the bye).

The problem with the current system is those stupid computers and the
Strength of Schedule. SOS is included in the computers, and it is a
separate component. Plus, there's the QW bonus, which adds Strength of
Schedule a THIRD time. So the polls mean less and less, when they used
to mean everything. It's not whether you win or lose, it's who you
play.

-Original Message-
I like a twelve team playoff where you give seeds #1-4 a bye week.

Involve 11 bowl games as the sites. Have the Fiesta, Rose, Sugar and
Orange rotate the championship and semifinals.

Assuming Tennessee wins tonight, give the byes to Miami, Tennessee,
Oregon, and Colorado or Nebraska. You can use the existing BCS computer
composite rankings to determine 1-4 and 5-12.

RE: [RollTideFan] Re:BYU might take BCS to court

2001-12-05 Thread Hugh Wolfgang

It's pretty stupid, Javvy :)

Fan polls can - and are - rigged by fans. Special codes? Okay, that
might work, but it would be subject to hacking like we've never seen
before. I can see it now. Nevermind Nimda. Goner would be a-goner.
We'd have Football viruses instead, except that their purpose would be
to PREVENT fans from being able to send in their ballots, or to send in
counterfeit ballots in their place.

A better system would be to simply use the RPI, as is done in college
basketball. Screw the polls. Screw the computers. It's not how much
you win by, it's who you beat (or lost to, as was Georgia's case last
year).

-Original Message-
 How 'bout this:

!. Coach's Poll
2. AP Poll
3. Fan Poll

All 3 top 25 are equal in weight. #25 gets 1 point and #1 gets 25
points.
The point totals from all 3 polls are added up each week to determine
the
final place in a ranking system. Sounds fair to me and would also
include
the fans. Sure the fans could try to find ways to cheat the polls but
technology could twart that. maybe the fan polls could be 1000 fans
randomly
picked from applications each year or even each week and who send in
their
ballots via internet with special codes to assure authenticity.

Imagine sending in your application each summer and hoping you are
picked to
vote for the top 25 in week 6. Would that not be the biggest rush?

OK. Now somebody tell me how stupid the idea is...

I don't remember, and it's irrelevant.
The UTEP game, the SECOND STRING was playing the second half because we
didn't want to embarrass them completely (we did anyway). Also, had Zow
practiced with the first team before that game? I doubt it. Did he
practice with the first team before the Auburn game, and the Southern

You can't compare a quarterback's performance with second string support

compare Fran's coaching to DuBose.

However Bama Fans! We would not be surprised that if Franchione does not
join Kansas, that Bob Davies would be a strong candidate for the Kansas
job. Sources have confirmed to FanStop.com that Davies name has been
added to the list of candidates for the job at KU.

Somehow, I'm not worried about who will be leading the Tide's victory
over MTSU in August. I'm much more concerned with who the next coach at
Vanderbilt will be - and who could replace Spurrier at Florida.

As for the situation at the University of Alabama, we continue
to hear that current Bama head coach Dennis Franchione, despite
denials, still appears to be at least from the University of
Kansas's standpoint their top choice and leading candidate to
 replace Terry Allen.

If you're suggesting that Ole Miss's offense got WORSE with time
I'm not buying that at all. If Bama had been played the way they are

Carolina. Tennessee is the single game that I think would have been

[RollTideFan] Tide climbs nto Top 20 for first time in '01

2001-12-02 Thread Hugh Wolfgang

Alabama's men's basketball team is back where it belongs - among the
nation's elite.
On the heels of wins over Utah and McNeese State, Alabama climbed three
spots in this week's ESPN/USA Today Top 25 Coaches Poll, to 19th.

At 18th, the Tide is now at its highest ranking in the Coaches Poll
since Feb 25, 2001, when Bama was also ranked 19th. Ironically, Alabama
wasn't even in Top 25 a year ago today. Bama debuted in the 2000-01
Coaches Poll at #22, on Dec. 11, after beginning the season 6-0.

Alabama plays UT-Chattanooga tomorrow night at Coleman Coliseum (8pm
tip-off on Fox Sports Net) before traveling cross-country to face its
third Top 20 opponent of the season (in its first 8 games) in the 2001
Wooden Classic, at UCLA.

The TEAM - especially the defense - played better when Zow was in at QB.
Having said that, Zow DID drive the team for a score against UCLA (too
little too late in the game), you know.

-Original Message-
Stating that Zow is 2-0 and that Watts is 4-5 is not a fair comparison.
There was a big difference in Zow's games and Watts. DEFENSE. If
the defense played these last two games as they had most of the year,
Zow could have very well been 0-2. I'm not saying that Zow did not play
good, but the 4-5 record was not because Watts did not play good
football.

I am probably going to get slaughtered for this, but

At the beginning of the season, I believed we could go 11-0.
11 games into the season, I still believe we could have gone 11-0.
If the team had played with the same intensity and desire in September that it played
with in November, Alabama would not be sitting around waiting for the Music City Bowl
officials to call - the Tide would be preparing for Florida.

Having said that, am I surprised that the team went 6-5? A little, yes.
Disappointed? Yes. Devastated? Nope. Boston College will be a tough test for this
team, though. A loss could be the beginning of a long off-season. A win, though,
would give Bama - no, would CONTINUE - a lot of momentum heading into a VERY tough
schedule in 2002.

Let's not get caught up in celebrating a win over USM for too long. We NEED to WIN
the Music City Bowl this time around.

25, but most have conference tie-ins.
The SEC sends a representative to the following bowls:
1. BCS (Sugar)
2. Citrus
3. Outback
4. Cotton
5. Peach
6. Independence
7. Music City

The order of picking can be vague at times in the SEC. Of course, it's
possible that another conference could be unable to fill its allotment of
bowls, and the bowl may pick a team from the SEC instead.

Possibilities I've heard include the Tide getting a bid to the Las Vegas
Bowl or the Tangerine Bowl, which have tie-ins to the Pac 10 and Big
East/ACC. There are two bowls with At Large picks, too: Humanitarian and
Silicon Valley.

count the BCS bowls in years when Bama is
  ineligible, so it's probably more
  like 6 or 7.
It's possible that NINE SEC teams could finish 6-5

Re: [RollTideFan] Tide continues to get no respect in Coaches Top 25

2001-11-25 Thread Hugh Wolfgang

To give sportswriters and coaches something to do? :)
Actually, I'd say it's tradition, but I'm not even sure that's true.
However, the polls do provide a way
for a coach to inspire a team to get up for a big game against a
highly-ranked opponent. The RPI could
be used instead - since it is what really matters, not the polls - but the
NCAA does not release the official RPI. The
best reproductions are made by CollegeRPI.com and a few other sites (which
occassionally don't agree), but they're
not official. A team can be ranked in the top 10 in the RPI, and not in
either poll. Interesting enough, Bama is 27th in the latest RPI released by
CollegeRPI.com. But the RPI at this point in the season is very suspect.
For example, Bama's opponent tomorrow night - Utah - is 110 in the RPI.
Bama's opponent on Dec. 8 - UCLA - is 160. Bama'a Dec. 14 opponent -
Jacksonville State - sits at #12 in the RPI. Is there anybody who thinks
JSU could beat UCLA? Okay, maybe there is :)

This brings up an interesting thought. Since there IS a playoff in
basketball, why even bother with a weekly poll? At the end of the year,
does
it really matter? In D1 football, since there is no playoff, the polls
serve
a purpose, but in all other sports, polls mean absolutely nothing in my
 opinion.

[RollTideFan] #22 Alabama to face tough test in Guardian's Classic semifinal

2001-11-19 Thread Hugh Wolfgang

It's official: Alabama is the consensus #22 ranked men's basketball team
in America.

The USA Today/ESPN Top 25 Coaches Poll was released last night, and the
Tide went from 27th to 22nd. Today, the Associated Press unveiled their
second poll of the year, and Bama rose two spots, from 24th to 22nd.

That's the good news, for now. The better news is that Alabama has an
excellent opportunity to greatly improve upon its ranking this week, in
the Guardian's Classic Final Four. Bama's semifinal opponent will be #5
AP/#8 Coaches Missouri, and #9 Memphis and #12 Iowa meet in the other
semifinal.

Tip-off of Alabama vs. Missouri is at 9pm CST tomorrow night. It's
gonna be a LONG night but hopefully it will be a good night for the
Tide.

[RollTideFan] Tide finally gets respect from Coaches!

2001-11-18 Thread Hugh Wolfgang

A week after falling from just outside of the preseason top 25 (26th)
to 27th in the ESPN/USA Today Top 25, a pair of huge wins propelled Mark
Gottfried's Alabama men's basketbale team into the ESPN/USA Today Top 25
Coaches Poll, released about an hour ago. Alabama makes its 2001-02
debut in the poll at 22nd, with 106 points.

Elsewhere in the Coaches Top 25:
1. Duke (duh!)
2. Illinois
3. Kansas
4. UCLA (Bama's opponent on Dec. 8)
5. Maryland
6. Florida
7. Arizona
8. Iowa (plays #14 Memphis in the Guardian's Classic semifinals opposite
Bama)
9. Missouri (Bama's Guardian's Classic semifinal opponent on Tuesday)
10. Virginia
11. Michigan State
12. Kentucky
13. Stanford
14. Memphis (plays #8 in the Guardian's Classic semifinals opposite
Bama)
15. Georgetown
16. Oklahoma State
17. Boston College
18. Syracuse
19. St. Joseph's
20. Indiana
21. Fresno State
22. ALABAMA
23. Oklahoma
24. Texas
25. W. Kentucky

Notables receiving votes:
Tennessee (23), North Carolina (15), Utah (14), Ole Miss (7),

It's very eerie that only two teams from the SEC West received any votes
in this week's poll, and one of them WASN'T Arkansas.

That's a damn shame. It really is.

This is yet another fine example of why I hate the NCAA. Petty nonsense.
It
matters not that an automobile was involved. Replace the automobile with a
10-speed bicycle. Depending on the vendetta of the day, the NCAA just
might
view the *loan* of a bicycle as serious as they *sometimes* view the loan
of
 an automobile.

As they should.
If you *loan* a player a car, and that's a violation, then if you *loan* a
player a bike, it's also a violation. Loan that same player a buck, and
it's also
a violation. Where do you draw the line? Good question. I'd say that they
are much more likely to penalize a player/school for a loan of a car than
for a loan of a buck, but this is the NCAA we're talking about.

Any more rumors on the Bruins having to forfeit games that Foster played in
after the *loan*? When did the violatiion occur, anyway?

Re: [RollTideFan] Tide selects permanent captains...

2001-11-15 Thread Hugh Wolfgang

Isn't this unprecidented? Five permanent captains, and only two of them are
seniors. In the past, haven't the permanent captains always been seniors?
Or have their been juniors that I'm not aware of?

Having said that, I certainly can't disagree with the selection of these
five, as they've had a tremendous influence on the team this year.

But it brings up something interesting... the three juniors will
undoubtably contribute heavily to the success of the 2002 Crimson Tide... or
at least we hope they will! An Alabama tradition is that the previous
year's captains place their hand and foot prints in concrete on the Walk of
Fame on A-Day of the following spring. Is it conceivable - even LIKELY -
that Watts, Rasheed, and Johnson will be named permanent captains of the
2002 team, and thus have multiple steps along the Walk of Fame?

- Original Message -
Three juniors and two seniors have been selected as Alabama's permanent
captains for 2001. While the game captains each week were selected from
the
Leadership Council, the permanent captains were elected from the
Leadership
 Council by the players.

The permanent captains on offense are senior tight end Terry Jones, senior
quarterback Andrew Zow, and junior quarterback Tyler Watts. The defensive
captains are junior linebacker Saleem Rasheed and junior tackle Jarret
 Johnson.

[RollTideFan] ESPN.com's Lunardi has a sense of humor, sort of

2001-11-15 Thread Hugh Wolfgang

As some of you probably know, ESPN.com host a weekly (or so) column by Joe
Lunardi called Bracketology during the college basketball season.

Lunardi's first column tackles the changes in NCAA bracket policy regarding
making a team travel far from home (or not making them travel as far, I
should say). These changes, it should be noted, were made BEFORE September
11, 2001.

And so, I find it humorous that Lunardi places the Crimson Tide as a 5th
seed. No, that's not funny. What's funny is that the Tide is shown as the
5th seed in the WEST Regional, where the first round will be played in St.
Louis, Missouri. Bama's projected opponent? Missouri.

For those of you who have been in a cave the last few days, Alabama's next
game is in Kansas City, Missouri. The Tide's next opponent is Missouri.

Somehow, I think the odds of the Tide being acquitted of all charges facing
the football program in two days are better than the chances of Bama and
Missouri playing as the 4-5 matchup in St. Louis in March.

Honestly no, I don't remember the 1997 Iron Bowl, but I do remember last
year. It wasn't close, despite the score. The Tide was pretty much
humiliated.

As for the another trend... I don't understand what you mean.

 Look at the trends Hugh.
The Iron Bowl is always close, the better team usually wins but it is
always closer than it could be. Remember 1997?
Another trend is the two teams have won or lost in close games all year
 long.
Is it just me, or are all of the predictions this week VERY close
