I'm frustrated and disappointed enough that I'm considering going on an email posting hiatus until Bama learns how to WIN a close game. Crap! That takes us into April and those are all good things to me and I enjoy them. But the months I dread are those between spring practice and the beginning of fall camp (May - August). The Tide lost in Madison, Wisconsin tonight, dropping their record to 10-2. Wisconsin has won 36 games in a row on their home court. Here's the write-up: http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/recap?gameId=243640275 Alabama 62 Wisconsin 76 MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Alando Tucker scored 21 points and Wisconsin stifled No. 18 Alabama's high-powered offense in a 76-62 victory Wednesday night that extended the nation's longest home winning streak to 36 games. The Badgers (9-2) took a 33-23 halftime lead behind the Big Ten's best defense. Alabama, the Southeastern Conference's leading offense at better than 86 points per game, scored on seven straight possessions to start the second half, cutting the lead 42-37. But the Crimson Tide (10-2) went scoreless for almost 3 minutes after Ronald Steele's basket cut the lead to 54-46 with 6:18 left. Tucker's 3-pointer gave the Badgers a 65-48 lead, their biggest of the game, and Wisconsin cruised from there. The Badgers haven't lost at Kohl Center since Dec. 4, 2002, when Wake Forest beat them 90-80. Alabama came in shooting almost 50 percent from the field but the Crimson Tide made less than one-third of their shots in the first half. Chuck Davis made two of his first eight shots, but scored 10 points in the Crimson's Tide's run to open the second half and then cooled off the rest of the way. He finished with 18 points and seven rebounds, while Kennedy Winston also had 18 points for the Crimson Tide. Wisconsin never trailed as Mike Wilkinson hit his first three shots to open a 7-0 lead. He finished with 15 points while Zach Morley had 13 points and seven rebounds. Tucker also had seven rebounds. -- Roll Tide! rick ___ RTF mailing list RTF@rolltidefan.net http://rolltidefan.net/mailman/listinfo/rtf_rolltidefan.net

[RollTideFan] From the Desk of Mal Moore
In case some of you aren't on the mailing list, this is a good message from Coach Moore. Roll Tide!! rick _ December 28th, 2004 Dear Crimson Tide Fan, I am hopeful you had a most rewarding Christmas season and 2005 will be the best year possible for all of you who so loyally support the Alabama Crimson Tide. Our football season as well as the year 2004 both come to an end Friday; and we are certainly hoping to continue to build on our momentum in football and all sports for the next calendar year. It is hard to believe it has been six years since we played in the inaugural Music City Bowl; and by all indications the bowl has grown in stature, local support and overall interest in those half dozen years. The name Alabama is still pre-eminent in the college football world; and Nashville is really embraced the return of the Crimson Tide. I know we are all excited about being here and hopefully ending the season on a very high note. Our fans have really turned the city of Nashville crimson. They have had a record number of tickets sold to the game and there could easily be a capacity crowd come Friday and most of them are Crimson Tide supporters. I have gone out to practice the last few days and it has afforded me the opportunity to see some of our fans, old players and some of the Vanderbilt folks. On Tuesday I got to visit with Commodore head coach Bobby Johnson. His staff and team are dealing with the ultimate tragedy with the death of their running back Kwane Doster. Certainly, the thoughts and prayers of the University of Alabama are with the Commodore football program as they deal with this tragic situation. On a happier note, I did get to see to Lemanski Hall, our star linebacker of the early 1990s, who now lives in Nashville. Lemanski played about 10 years or so in the NFL before retiring in the Nashville area. He is the process of finishing a term paper that will earn him his degree from the University this spring. Lemanski is a great representative of the University and it is always satisfying to see our former players do well. I just missed Jeff Rutledge at practice Tuesday but I did get to talk to him on the telephone and hope to see him before the week is out. Of course, Jeff is a highly successful high school coach in the Nashville area and I'm glad he got to get out and see us work out. Another one of our old quarterbacks, Joe Kelley, has been all over Nashville helping us out this week. Of course, Joe was a founding member of the bowl game here and a member of our Crimson Tradition Fund Drive. My daughter Heather and her family have flown from Phoenix and we will celebrate a belated Christmas and New Years in Nashville. Before getting on the plane to come to Nashville, my three-year-old grandson Cannon got on the phone and told me, "Roll Tide!" With that I will follow his lead, wish each of you a Happy New Year and a special Roll Tide! What a huGe black eye the Catholics carry around these days (rightfully so I might add). For the second year in a row, professional football leads baseball by 2-to-1--30 percent vs. 15 percent--as the nation's favorite sport. We're going to have to start saying, "As American as apple pie and football." Loved it, Slef. Thanks for passing it on rick Jeff Todd wrote: Monday, December 27, 2004 Huntsville Times A year later, family still feels pain but also has memories of good times A year and two weeks have come and gone since that cold December morning when the unthinkable befell the Johnsons of Hampton Cove. The passage of time has helped to a degree, as it always does. The shock and the numbness have receded now, replaced by the precious memories of the good times and by the reassuring conviction that some sweet day they'll see Lisa again in a better place that knows no sorrow. But it's still not easy in the here and now, of course. Not easy remembering that day, thinking about it, talking about it. Not easy when it's still the first thing that comes to mind in the mornings and the last conscious thought at night. It all began not unlike the first three mornings of that week in the fashionable brick home of David "Hoss'' Johnson, his wife Lisa and their two children - Tyler, then a 13-year-old eighth-grader, and his sister Madison, 12, a sixth-grader. Lisa was staying home, recuperating from minor day surgery four days earlier. Her mother, Dale Davis, had come to help out. Mrs. Davis was expecting to return to her home in Hamilton in another day or two. Everything seemed perfectly normal that morning. After breakfast, Tyler and Madison kissed their mother, told her "I love you'' and gathered up their books for school. Hoss dropped them off at Hampton Cove Middle School, just down the road, and drove back home, contemplating the rest of his day. Although he had taken a few days off, he thoughts were on his job. He asked himself: Is there anything I need to be doing at work today? When he walked in the door, a distraught Mrs. Davis told him Lisa had passed out on the bathroom floor, and she wasn't waking up. Much of what happened the next few minutes is still foggy in Hoss' mind, like a bewildering, surreal movie about somebody else. The ambulance arrived quickly at 2916 Tantallon Drive. Everything was a fast fury, Hoss recalls - the frantic ride over Monte Sano and down the winding hill on Governors Drive ... the siren blaring and the lights flashing ... cars pulling off to the side ... the attendants working urgently with masks and tubes ... the screeching arrival at Huntsville Hospital's emergency room ... the fearful vigil in the waiting room as family and friends began gathering ... and then the doctor emerging and saying the words nobody could believe: "I'm sorry. There's nothing more we can do.'' Somebody glanced at the clock on the wall and remembered the time. It was 8:58 a.m. on Dec. 11, 2003. ... It was a PE, the family later learned - a pulmonary embolism, a blood clot to the lung. Statistically, it's the third most common cause of sudden death in the United States. About 200,000 Americans die every year of PE, almost twice as many annual deaths as those caused by AIDS or highway accidents. Several people from the Huntsville area died of various causes that same Dec. 11: Bob Ailor, a veteran of the U.S. Army Signal Corps and a pillar of Mountain View Baptist Church; William Baker, another Army veteran and the operator of City Coal Company from 1952-98; Kate Essenwanger, a longtime Red Cross volunteer and the wife of Dr. Oskar Essenwanger for 56 years; Shirley Harper, 69, a native of Big Cove and a former school teacher in Tennessee; Alice Wilmer, 78, a former registrar at Grissom High School ... And Lisa Johnson. She was just 39 years old. Origin of a nickname They met in college at the University of Alabama in the early 1980s, the burly, outgoing football player from Huntsville and the pretty coed from Hamilton in Marion County. Lisa was the daughter of Jim and Dale Davis. Jim Davis was a former offensive lineman for Red Drew at Alabama, lettering in 1951-52-53. On Jan. 1, 1954, he watched on crutches from the sideline while Alabama lost to Rice in the Cotton Bowl, the game that will always be remembered because of Tommy Lewis and Dicky Moegle. Hoss, the youngest of the three children born to Cotton and Linda Johnson, came into the world weighing a few ounces over 12 pounds. The hospital nurse who brought him to his parents quipped, "This boy's a real hoss.'' The offhand remark turned into a lifetime nickname. Hoss went on to become an All-State lineman for coach Mike Guerry at Butler High School. In 1982, he became the last high school football prospect Paul "Bear'' Bryant ever signed. Under Bryant's successor, Ray Perkins, Hoss started 28 games on the offensive line from 1984-86. Lisa and Hoss married in 1987, the same year he signed as a free agent with the St. Louis Cardinals of the NFL. The following summer, he went to work for Huntsville's Parks and Recreation Department, where he now works as a supervisor in Zone 4, which encompasses most of south Huntsville. It's easy to remember his first day on the job,

Sal Maiorana Staff writer ORCHARD PARK — Shaud Williams' career at the University of Alabama was prolific enough to warrant an invitation to the Indianapolis scouting combine last winter. However, his draft stock plummeted when, due to a sore hamstring, he ran a sub-par time in the 40-yard dash. Williams sat around for two days waiting for his name to be called and it never was."I didn't run well at the combine, I had a sore hamstring, but I didn't want to be that guy to stand up and say I wasn't going to run," the 5-foot-7, 193-pound Williams said. Why did you decline and play college football instead?"I didn't want to go that far away. I was 18 at the time. I turned it down because I told them I wanted to go to college and play football. It was a pretty nice bonus and after I told them I wasn't going to sign they asked me what would it take for me to sign, but I still turned it down because I wanted to play college football. I have no regrets whatsoever."Was baseball your first love as a kid? "My dad played minor league baseball and it was just something I was always around. How I got to playing football, I really don't know. I was always at the baseball field with my dad throwing the ball around."During your college football career you played for five different head coaches. Is that some kind of record? "Yeah, I think it is. My first year at Texas Tech I was with Spike Dykes, then he retired and they brought in Mike Leach and he had the pass-happy offense. Then I transferred to Alabama and I had coach (Dennis) Franchione, and then he left and Mike Price was there for a couple months, then coach (Mike) Shula came in. It was tough, but I was fortunate enough that I had some good coaches and teammates around me and that helped to make the transition to each one a little smoother."What was your most exciting college game? "My senior year we had the opportunity to play Oklahoma. It was a great atmosphere, it was a night game on ESPN, they were No. 1 at the time, and it was at home at Bryant-Denney and there were about 90,000 people there. It was just awesome. "I felt like that would have shown the scouts that I'd back down, so I went out there and still ran with a hurt hamstring."I didn't run well and it probably hurt me, but I think, if anything, I showed I'm able to run through anything and I'm not going to back down from anything." The Bills signed Williams as a free agent, and proving that his combine was a fluke, Williams made the Buffalo roster with a solid training camp, and today, he may be the Bills' starting running back in place of injured Willis McGahee. Williams is the subject of this week's Q & A:Growing up in Texas, you were a baseball star as well as a football star, and the Atlanta Braves offered you $150,000 to play in their minor league system. It was just the way you draw up a game to be and it was one of those games you look forward to and try to take advantage."Who has had the greatest influence on your football career? "Probably my parents. They've been there for me through thick and thin. They're the ones that always told me I could do it, even when people told me I was too little or wasn't big enough." Even though you were playing both sports in high school, was it during those years when you started thinking about football as your eventual career?"Yeah, I think I was in high school when I decided that I wanted to give football a shot. That's when I fell in love with Barry Sanders and Emmitt Smith and those guys. And with those guys being smaller backs it gave me hope and let me dream a little bigger." When you speak to children at community functions, do you make sure to tell them that size doesn't matter? "Definitely. My whole thing when I talk to kids is that no matter what you want to be, don't let anybody tell you that you can't be what you want to be. Don't let anyone steal your dreams. That's one of the things my parents always instilled in me. If you want to dream to be this or that, then go for it and don't let anybody tell you can't do it."What is your most prized material possession? "We won the state championship in baseball my senior year in high school and I still have the gold medal they give you. That's still sitting in my room back home. It's that or, in my freshman year I was the Big 12 Freshman of the Year and they gave me a nice plaque for that, so it's one of those two things."What was the dumbest money you ever spent? "When I was little I saved up enough money to get one of those little scooters. I begged my paren

That's a bit of great news to wake-up to. Thank you! rmc Jeff Todd wrote: Bama lands 'The Deuce' Nick Saban's decision on Saturday night to accept the Miami Dolphins head coaching position opened the door for the Crimson Tide staff to get a late Christmas present. "I'm going to Bama," star safety/linebacker Chris Keys of North Jackson said just minutes after Saban announced that he was taking the Miami position. "I don't know that I would've switched to Alabama had Coach Saban stayed a LSU, but now that he's gone I'm going to Bama." Last summer Keys made an early commitment to Saban's LSU Tigers. But after being dismissed from his high school in Port Barre, LA before his senior year, Keys transferred to North Jackson where he has lived the past six months with the family of Ali Sharrief, a running back who recently switched his commitment from Auburn to Alabama. Unfortunately, before the season Keys was ruled ineligible to play his senior year at North Jackson by the Alabama HS Athletic Association. In spite of that ruling, the 6-2, 212-pound Keys remained in school at North Jackson. "At first I had every intention of signing with LSU because Coach Saban had stuck with me through my problems I had here [in Louisiana]," said Keys, who is at home in Port Barre with his family for the holidays. "But during the season I went to some Alabama games and I couldn't believe it. The coaching staff was great. The facilities were great. And the atmosphere at the games was just awesome. I mean, awesome. I was like, 'Wow, I really like Bama a lot.' "So when these rumors started about Coach Saban leaving, I just told my family that if he left that I was going to Bama. My family felt that since Coach Saban had stuck with me that I should stick to my commitment. But when I came home for the holidays, I told my mom and everybody how much I liked Alabama. They told me to do what was in my heart. So when Coach Saban announced tonight that he's leaving, I de-committed from LSU and I'm now committed to Alabama." Keys credited Tide assistant coach Chris Ball as instrumental in building his interest in Alabama. "Coach Ball is a great coach and a great guy," Keys said. "He's one of those guys that you can go to and talk about life. You can tell him what's on your mind and ask for his advice. He's also a great coach. He's stays on you, but he gives you respect." In Keys, Alabama is getting one of the nation's top prospects. Some services rate him among the country's top 25 prospects regardless of position. Given that he's already 6-2, 212 pounds and that he'll probably get bigger, some project him as a linebacker in college. "Alabama recruited me as a free safety and that's the position I want to play," Keys said. "I've been a safety since I played pee-wee ball and I just love playing the position. I love hitting people." At the time TI spoke with Keys tonight, the Tide staff was not aware of their late Christmas day gift. "I've tried calling Coach Ball and Coach Shula on their cell phones, but all I get is their voice mail," Keys said. "I know they're getting ready for the bowl and stuff. I've left them messages to call me as soon as they get my message. I just want to let them know that I've decided to commit to Alabama." Keys said that he'll wear number 2 at Alabama. "That's always been my number and Alabama has told me that it's open for me," he said. "It's my grandfather's my favorite number. Plus, my nickname is 'The Deuce'." Is Nick Kyles next? On Saturday afternoon star receiver Nick Kyles of Baldwin-Milledgeville, GA said that he was on the verge of making his announcement. After his official visit to Alabama two weeks ago, the 6-2½, 190-pound Kyles was ready to commit to the Tide. But coaches from Georgia and Auburn asked him to hold off until after he took official visits to their schools in January. But Kyles said earlier today that he might go ahead and make his decision. "As of now, I'm thinking about committing this coming Tuesday afternoon," Kyles said. "Alabama is definitely my favorite." Over the past two seasons Kyles caught over 100 passes for more than 2,000 yards. ___ RTF mailing list RTF@rolltidefan.net http://rolltidefan.net/mailman/listinfo/rtf_rolltidefan.net

[RollTideFan] NFL: 60 Minutes Interview with Ricky Williams
I wanted to watch this last night but missed it. Here it is in print if anyone else is interested... == (CBS) Former Miami Dolphins superstar Ricky Williams won the Heisman Trophy as the best college football player in the country at the University of Texas. Then, he had five years of glory in NFL. He carried the ball more often over the last two seasons than any other player in the league. And he made millions doing it for the Miami Dolphins, as the team's star player. But then, just before Dolphins training camp began this past July, he turned his back on all of it: the stardom, the fame and the salary of $5 million a year. His sudden decision to quit stunned his teammates, infuriated his fans and ruined his Dolphins' entire season. He never really explained why he quit, and he has stayed out of public view for the past six months – until now, in his first television interview with Correspondent Mike Wallace. Williams is now studying holistic medicine in the California hills outside Sacramento, where he surprisingly agreed to answer any questions 60 Minutes asked about how, at the peak of his earning power, he could just walk away. "Well, my whole thing in life is I just want freedom. And I thought that money would give me that freedom. I was wrong, of course," says Williams. "Because, especially when you’re 21 and you’re given as much money as I was given, it bound me more than it freed me. Because now, I have more things to worry about. I have more people asking for money. I had to buy a house and nice cars and different things that people with money are supposed to do. It just seemed to create more problems." His first check, at 21, was for $3.6 million – before taxes. "After, it was like $2, 2.4," says Williams. He would have made $5 million this year, but he said, "it's blood money, as far as I'm concerned. The money is what made me miserable. I want to be free from that stress." But Williams tells Wallace that the real reason he left was to avoid the public humiliation that would undoubtedly follow news that he had just failed a drug test for the third time. "The thing that I had the most trouble with was that after you fail your third test, then it becomes public knowledge that you failed the test. And that's the one thing that I couldn't deal with at the time. People knowing that I smoke marijuana," says Williams. "That was my biggest fear in my whole entire life. I was scared to death of that." So rather than face the music and the media about his failed drug test, he quit football and ran away to Australia, where he lived in a tent community that cost him just $7 a day. "In my tent, I had about 30 books. And every morning, I'd wake up at about 5 a.m. And I'd take my flashlight and I'd read for a couple of hours," says Williams. "Everything from nutrition to Buddhism, to Jesus, to try to figure out, you know, what am I? What am I? So, I just kept reading and reading. And couldn’t figure out what I was. But I learned a lot." There, he learned about an ancient healing science from India called Ayurveda. "It's using nature to heal yourself, to put yourself in balance," says Williams. "I'm more in balance now than I was a couple of months ago. But it's a journey that people spend their whole lives on." What's balance? "To talk about balance, it’s easier to talk about what’s out of balance. And I think anytime that you have any disease, and disease meaning lack of ease, lack of flow," says Williams. "So anytime there's disease, you're out of balance. Whether it’s jealousy anger, greed, anxiety, fear." These are emotions, he says, that most people have experienced in their lives. Just this fall, he enrolled in an 18-month course at The California College of Ayurveda. Freed from the structured life of the NFL, Williams is now immersed in the search for his soul. "Playing in the National Football League, you’re told you know where to be, when to be there, what to wear, how to be there," says Williams. "And being able to step away from that, I have an opportunity to look deeper into myself and look for what’s real." Dr. Mark Halpern, who runs the small college, says Williams is learning to become a holistic healer. "I see burnout in probably 60-70 percent of society at any given time," says Halpern. "He will help individuals to live in greater harmony with their environment through all five of their senses. We say that when we’re living in harmony with our environment, our bodies naturally express themselves in the form of health." Receiving massages that balance the various energies of the body is part of Williams' training to become an ayurvedic masseur. "He’s following the whisperings of his soul, as opposed to the shouting of his own ego. It’s our ego that desires the fame and the fortunes," says Halpern. "The whispers of the soul that lead us toward the pursuit of harmony, the pursuit of health and well being, including somet

Re: [RollTideFan] Bama appears headed for strong finish
Good stuff, Sleffie...thanks for passing it along to the list. Roll Tide! rick Jeff Todd wrote: From www.tiderinsider.com Bama appears headed for strong finish December 16, 2004 -- As a follower of Alabama recruiting for 30 years, I can't remember a year since the SEC letter-of-intent was abolished in the early 1980s in which the Crimson Tide had as many frontline prospects committed before Christmas as it does this year. And the Tide still has several top uncommitted prospects that might jump on board by early New Year. Alabama currently has 22 commitments. Given that at least two or three of those will greyshirt next fall, it's likely that Alabama will sign 28 or 29 in this class. That would leave six or seven scholarship slots open. And in the event the class fills up, the Tide staff has a plan to accommodate a top prospect or two who might decide for Bama late in the process. Ideally, Bama would like to finish with another running back, a tight end, two defensive linemen, a safety/linebacker and a defensive back. There are several prospects that could fill those spots. Based on the information available now, let's take a look at those prospects most likely to complete the 2005 signing class. Running back At running back, there is little doubt about who is at the top of Bama's board. With an outstanding senior year, Tallahassee-Godby star Roy Upchurch (6-0, 193, 4.4) bolted to front of the wish list. Upchurch scored 27 touchdowns and finished second in the state of Florida with over 2,500 yards rushing. Alabama has been high on the list of such talented backs as Mikell Simpson of Harrisburg, PA and Mike Davis of Columbia, SC. But what separates Upchurch from the others is that he's probably the better all around back. He does everything the Tide staff wants in a back -- he runs with speed, elusiveness and power, he blocks and catches, and he returns kicks. As TI has reported for months, Upchurch's mother is a close friend to the mother of former Tide running back Ray Hudson. That might help. Another thing working in Bama's favor is its offense. Upchurch likes the way the Tide features its tailback. For several weeks, sources close to the Godby program have indicated that Upchurch would pick Alabama over FSU. According to sources, Upchurch will make an unofficial visit to FSU on January 28. His decision might be made before that visit takes place. Unless something changes, look for Bama to get its man. The Crystal Ball says: Roy Upchurch Wide receiver/tight end Besides running back, Bama's other priorities on offense down the stretch are a top tight end and a top wide receiver. The Tide is still in the mix for Montgomery-Trinity Presbyterian tight end Tommy Trott (6-5, 240). While Trott says Auburn is his current leader, Trott told TI on Wednesday night that he was still torn between Alabama and Auburn. Bama is also looking at other tight end prospects, including Collin Peek (6-6, 250) of Jacksonville-Bolles, FL. Bama has a great shot at landing Milledgeville-Baldwin, GA star receiver Nick Kyles. Over the past two seasons the 6-2½, 189-pound Kyles caught over 100 passes for more than 2,000 yards. He favors Alabama over offers from Auburn, Georgia, Florida and Clemson. While Bama is still in the running for Tallahassee-Lincoln blue chipper Fred Rouse, chances are much more likely that the Tide would end up with Kyles. The Crystal Ball says: Nick Kyles Defensive line On the defensive side, Bama is still in good shape with at least four line prospects. Prattville's Bobby Greenwood (6-6, 240) will probably choose Alabama or FSU. At the moment, TI believes Alabama will win out for Greenwood. As of Wednesday night, Athens star Wes Brown was clearly struggling with his decision between Alabama and Tennessee. Back in the summer, Brown committed to Tennessee. But since that time he's had second thoughts. He has visited Alabama and Tennessee. Although he comes from a family of Tennessee fans, he apparently favors Alabama. Sources close to the matter tell TI that Brown would like to make a decision before Christmas. As TI has reported for several months, Bama is a legitimate contender for Mesquite, TX star defensive end Cordero Moore (6-4, 265). Moore has narrowed his list to Alabama, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Arkansas. Moore's father, Rod Moore, told TI that he and his wife favored Alabama as the school for their son. Moore will make his official visit to Bama on January 7. Another top out-of-state defensive lineman on Bama's list is Brandon Deaderick (6-4, 235) of Elizabethtown, KY. Deaderick has listed Bama among his top three, along with Louisville and Auburn. Michigan State is also making a late push. Given that Wes Brown appears to favor Alabama and that Cordero Moore wants to take all o

He mentioned offensive linemen Antoine Caldwell and Cody Davis, defensive lineman Curtis Dawson and weakside linebacker Demarcus Waldrop. Two of those players - Caldwell and Dawson - have switched positions since coming to Alabama. Dawson, a middle linebacker at Hoover, moved to defensive tackle during the season. Caldwell, who was signed to play center, moved to left guard during the bowl practices. "A lot of us are working out at new positions, just getting prepared" Caldwell said. "Coach Shula said whatever we could do to make the team better." Secondary coach Chris Ball said the best way for newcomer Lionel Mitchell and freshman Simeon Castille to become the team's cornerback duo of the future is watch current starters Ramzee Robinson and Anthony Madison. "Those two need to latch onto Ramzee's and Anthony's work ethic, work as hard as they do and they'll be all right," Ball said. Notre Dame spokesman John Heisler said Wednesday night that the university probably would not have any announcements about assistant coaches before the first of next week, in part because of the bureaucracy of the hiring process, which includes job applications that must be filled out and drug tests that must be taken. http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=1947249 -- rick ___ RTF mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://rolltidefan.net/mailman/listinfo/rtf_rolltidefan.net

University of Alabama linebacker DeMeco Ryans said he plans on returning for his senior year. "I'm going to be here next year," Ryans said when asked about the possibility of foregoing his final year to enter the NFL draft. Ryans was asked about the NFL possibility during a press conference promoting Alabama's game against Minnesota in the Music City Bowl on Dec. 31 at The Coliseum in Nashville. He acknowledged that he would question teammates, including defensive tackle Anthony Bryant, who had explored leaving early for the NFL. "I'll ask them about it or whatever, to see how it is," Ryans said. "I just really haven't sat down and thought about it." The 6-foot-2, 232-pound junior from Jess Lanier High played as a true freshman, led the team with 126 tackles as a sophomore and contributed 65 tackles this season. He is on track to earn a degree in business management in August and, at least right now, sounds set on playing his final college season. "Next year I feel like this team, we'll be playing for the national title," Ryans said. "I just feel like we're going to be in the mix." Two other draft-eligible players - safeties Charlie Peprah and Roman Harper - also said they have no plans on bolting early. -- Roll Tide!! rick ___ RTF mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://rolltidefan.net/mailman/listinfo/rtf_rolltidefan.net

[RollTideFan] No Blue/Gray ... Again
Blue-Gray Classic canceled again By JOHN ZENOR, AP Sports Writer December 6, 2004 http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaaf/news;_ylc=X3oDMTBpMmgzc2pzBF9TAzk1ODYyMzAwBHNlYwN0aA--?slug=ap-blue-graycanceled&prov=ap&type=lgns MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) -- The Blue-Gray All-Star Classic has been called off for the second time in three years because officials couldn't find a corporate sponsor for the Christmas Day showcase for aspiring NFL players. The Blue-Gray game was a Christmas tradition since 1978, featuring college seniors from teams that didn't qualify for bowl games. Organizers had attempted to move the game from Christmas Day to Jan. 8 after the bowl games were completed, Blue-Gray Association President Mahlon Paulk said Monday. ``We thought this was really going to be an answer, because we were going to be able to get more name athletes that the public would have identification with,'' Paulk said. ``I think it would have worked. I think it would have really brought a lot more people into the stands having it a day other than Christmas Day.'' Paulk said ESPN2 had agreed to air the game on Jan. 8, but had to find alternative programming when Blue-Gray officials were still unable to find a sponsor to play the game. Last season, the game was held at Troy University, a 45-minute drive from its longtime home at Cramton Bowl in Montgomery. The Montgomery Lions Club has run the game for 56 years but has struggled to find corporate backing in recent years as the number of bowl games grew and other Christmas Day sporting events expanded. Paulk wasn't ruling out a return for the game. ``For the 2004 season, it's out,'' he said. ``We're hoping that we'll have something for 2005, either Christmas week or the first or second week in January 2006. Right now we don't have anything.'' ___ RTF mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://rolltidefan.net/mailman/listinfo/rtf_rolltidefan.net

UA wins thriller against 49ers By Cecil Hurt Sports Editor December 05, 2004 http://www.tidesports.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20041205/NEWS/412050376/1011 CHARLOTTE, N.C. | It wasn’t on ESPN, or even ESPN2. But it might make ESPN Classics. The Alabama Crimson Tide survived a slow start, foul trouble, three overtimes and enough heart-stopping moments to fill a hospital ward before taking a 102-101 triple-overtime thriller against the Charlotte 49ers. Kennedy Winston led the way with a career-high 33 points, including the 15-foot jumper with 20.8 seconds that proved to be the game-winner. He had also hit the shot that put the game into overtime to begin with, another short jumper with 2.9 seconds remaining. But in a game that featured close to 150 possessions, virtually every one had an impact on the outcome. “I don’t know if I’ve ever been in a game that was that great a basketball game," Crimson Tide head coach Mark Gottfried said. “It just comes down to who makes the last play really. To make the shots our guys were forced to make, I don’t know if I could be any more proud." Winston, who scored 22 points after halftime, said he was only looking to take what the defense allowed - to a point. “I didn’t want to force things, but there was a time when I just wanted to take the ball and make something happen," he said. “There were times when Kennedy looked at me and I could tell he wanted the ball. He took over, and he should take over, he’s one of our leaders. But everyone on the team made plays. Al Weber and Jean Felix made some big shots in the third overtime. But at some point, you’ve got to make a defensive stop to win the game." That time came for Alabama after Winston’s final basket. Charlotte got the ball to forward Eddie Basden down low, but he didn’t get a solid drip on the ball and Winston knocked it out of bounds. “After that, they ran a flare play to [Brendan] Plavich for a 3-pointer, but I got a good contest on it," said Tide guard Earnest Shelton. “I think it hit the side of the backboard, but that let Basden grab it and throw it back towards the basket. You don’t even want to look and see if it goes in, you just look at them and see their reaction." That reaction was utter dejection. “That was one of the best games I have ever been a part of," said Charlotte coach Bobby Lutz. “That makes it even tougher to take the loss. There were so many things that could have changed the outcome that I don’t even want to talk about them, because that would take away from the game. Just give them credit." The game actually started 30 minutes behind schedule because of problems with the Halton Arena lighting, and even when the power was restored to the lights, it didn’t seem that the Crimson Tide was “We played like they were still out," Gottfried said. “We couldn’t make a shot. But I liked the way our guys responded to that. Our guys found a way to get into a rhythm about 10 minutes into the game, but we were really struggling in the first 10 minutes and they were shooting the lights out." It was so bad that, at the 10:58 mark of the first half, the Tide trailed b 14 points, 20-6. But Alabama, powered by some surprising offense from Jermareo Davidson, and the eventual arrival of the shooting touch of Winston and Shelton, managed to shave the deficit to six point, 41-35, by halftime. The Tide still trailed by nine, 54-45, with 14:38 to play. But Alabama then went on a 12-0 run, aided in part by a technical foul on Lutz, and took a three-point lead, 57-54, with 11:24 to play. Charlotte regained control, though, and had its lead back up to nine points, 74-65, with 4:10 to play. But down the stretch, Alabama outscored Charlotte 13-4, thanks almost entirely to Winston’s 10 points during that stretch. He had a 3-pointer with 28 seconds to pull the Tide within one point, and, after Plavich made one of two foul shots with 16.5 seconds to play, Winston’s jumper sent the game into overtime. By the third overtime, three Tide starters -- Chuck Davis, Ron Steele and Davidson -- had fouled out. But Winston was still around, which proved to be enough. Charlotte had its own set of heroes. All five starters for the 49ers (3-2) were in double figures, led by Curtis Withers’ 24 points. Center Martin Iti had a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds, while Basden had 19 points, eight rebounds and six assists. If there was one line on the statistics sheet that did Charlotte in, it was 15 missed free throws (23 of 38). In addition to Winston’s 33-point, 10-rebound effort, the Tide got a career high 21 points and 13 rebounds from Jermareo Davidson, whose layup with 20 seconds to go in the second overtime preserved the tie. Shelton added 18 points for the Tide, which is now 6-1 on the season. Alabama will be back on the road Tuesday night, facing Alabama State in Montgomery. -- Roll Tide!! rick ___ RTF mai

[RollTideFan] Music City Bowl is Official
Alabama to Play Minnesota in Gaylord Hotels Music City Bowl Saturday, December 04, 2004 Representatives of the Gaylord Hotels Music City Bowl Presented by Bridgestone announced today The Alabama Crimson Tide (6-5) will represent the Southeastern Conference in the seventh annual Bowl and go up against the Big Ten’s Minnesota Golden Gophers (6-5), Friday, Dec. 31 at 11 a.m. at The Coliseum. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN. “We are pleased and honored to announce the Alabama Crimson Tide as our SEC representative. An Alabama Minnesota match-up is sure to be exciting and should be a great game on the field,” said Joe Kelley, chairman of the Bowl, who pointed out this will make the second appearance in the bowl for both teams. The Tide, currently ranked first in the nation in pass defense and second in the nation in total defense, was defeated by Virginia Tech 38-7 in 1998, while Minnesota was crowned 2002 Music City Bowl champions after a 29-14 win against Arkansas. Mal Moore, University of Alabama athletic director, looks forward to bringing the Crimson Tide to Nashville again. “Nashville is a great city with a lot of loyal Alabama fans,” Moore said. “We’re looking forward to going to the Gaylord Hotels Music City Bowl Presented by Bridgestone and having a great time for our coaches, players and fans.” “We’re delighted that Alabama will represent the Southeastern Conference in the Gaylord Hotels Music City Bowl Presented by Bridgestone,” said Jay Sevigny, chief operating officer of Gaylord Hotels. “The loyalty of Crimson Tide fans to their team is legendary and their familiarity with Nashville’s attractions should make the New Year’s weekend in Nashville highly attractive to thousands of Alabamans.” Bridgestone officials agree. “We at Bridgestone Americas are confident that the Crimson Tide will bring its powerful game to the Music City Bowl Presented by Bridgestone,” said John Gamauf, president, consumer tire replacement, Bridgestone/Firestone North America, LLC. “We believe the match-up between the University of Alabama and the University of Minnesota will prove to be another outstanding Bowl contest.” Ticket prices for the Bowl begin at $15 and $30 for Upper Level, $45 for Lower Level and $65 for Club Level and are available in all sections of The Coliseum. Tickets can be purchased in Nashville by calling Ticketmaster at 615-255-9600 or by visiting www.ticketmaster.com and by going to www.rolltide.com. The Bowl, entering its seventh year, features an SEC and Big Ten match-up, two of the premier conferences in college football. Since its inception, the Bowl has produced a $69 million economic impact; 29 million television viewers have watched the Bowl on ESPN; and more than $10 million has been contributed to the participating universities through the Bowl’s payout. -- Roll Tide!! rick ___ RTF mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://rolltidefan.net/mailman/listinfo/rtf_rolltidefan.net

[RollTideFan] CUM to UF?
Friday, December 3, 2004 ESPN.com news services The University of Florida has offered its coaching job to Urban Meyer, who accepted today, ESPN.com's Pat Forde has learned. Florida papers reported the offer to Meyer, who has coached Utah to a 12-0 season and a BCS bowl bid, on their Web sites Friday morning. "It could be any minute," UF president Dr. Bernie Machen told The Palm Beach Post earlier today. "I'm waiting for an e-mail." When asked about the report, Utah athletic director Chris Hill, deferred. "My position is to let the other parties in these things -- the schools and the coach -- speak for themselves," Hill said. "Any kind of confirmation would have to come from other sources." When pressed, Hill offered no further comment. Meyer met with his players Thursday and told them what schools are pursuing him, but he would not be specific when asked about the meeting. "There's too many things involved right now to have any comments," Meyer said after a practice at Utah's new indoor practice field. Florida officials were in Utah on Thursday, as were Notre Dame officials. Meyer will replace Ron Zook, who was fired but coached the team through the end of the season. The Utah coach has said he wants to coach the Utes in their bowl game. Zook has not yet decided whether he will coach the Gators in the Peach Bowl. Utah is expected to consider offensive coordinator Mike Sanford and defensive coordinator Kyle Whittingham to replace Meyer. http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=1937879 -- Roll Tide!! Re: [RollTideFan] Cutcliffe is gone.
Daddy Manning is upset... I must admit this firing surprises me the most. Rick Cutcliffe firing sparks outrage from Manning By TONY BARNHART The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Archie Manning, the most famous player in University of Mississippi football history, said he was "embarrassed" by the school's decision to fire coach David Cutcliffe on Wednesday. "We have lost a good man who did incredible things for the Ole Miss program," Manning said from his office in New Orleans. "How you can post five straight winning seasons at Ole Miss and then get fired in your sixth is beyond me. This is a sad day for all of us." Cutcliffe, who went 44-29 in six seasons, was fired Wednesday after his first losing season in Oxford. Athletics director Pete Boone said the coach refused to submit a written plan to fix problems within the program, including upgrading a defense that finished ninth in the SEC this season. "He preferred the status quo, keeping things how they are," Boone said at a news conference. "I didn't hear a plan to make that better." A teary-eyed Cutcliffe wouldn't discuss specifics of his firing, which came just one season after the Rebels went 10-3 and earned a trip to the Cotton Bowl with Manning's son, Eli, at quarterback. His peers voted Cutcliffe the 2003 SEC Coach of the Year. But a season later, with a three-man quarterback rotation, Ole Miss went 4-7 overall, 3-5 in the SEC. Among SEC West teams, only Mississippi State had a worst conference record. Chancellor Robert Khayat said the school would "not accept . . . mediocrity," adding, "It's essential that the football program be competitive. It's not now-and-then competitive. It's every-year competitive." Under Cutcliffe, the Rebels had reached a level they hadn't achieved since Archie Manning was behind center in the early 1970s. Their 10 wins a year ago were their most since 1971, and they enjoyed five consecutive seven-win seasons for the first time since the John Vaught era (1947-70). It was Manning's influence that helped Cutcliffe get hired at Ole Miss. One son, Peyton, was an All-America quarterback at Tennessee when Cutcliffe was offensive coordinator. Eli signed with Ole Miss after Cutcliffe was named coach in 1999. "The guy is a good football coach and a very good man," Manning said. "He did not deserve to be treated like this." -- Roll Tide!! [RollTideFan] Hurt: Tide Basketball Article
CECIL HURT: Tide’s journey to Alaska a learning experience November 29, 2004 http://www.tidesports.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20041129/NEWS/411290329/1067 The University of Alabama basketball team was feeling the sting of a close 79-76 loss to Washington on Saturday night, but UA head coach Mark Gottfried insisted that the Crimson Tide’s first loss of the season wouldn’t leave a lasting scar. “Games like this don’t hurt you," Gottfried said, taking the long view. “I tell that to my peers. These games help you in the eyes of the [NCAA] Selection Committee, and they teach you something about your team." It’s a little too early to determine what the NCAA field is going to look like in March, although it does seem pretty safe to assume that Washington, which ran through Utah, Oklahoma and Alabama in three days in Anchorage, will make the field of 65. The more immediate concern, though, is what Gottfried learned, exactly, about his team while playing so far from home. The first lesson is one that Gottfried didn’t really need, because he already knew it: last year’s seniors are being missed. That was most obvious in the game’s last 1:45, when the Tide, which had fought back to make it a one-possession game, never scored again. Worse, in the final 38 seconds, the Tide never got off a legitimate shot to potentially tie the game. Now, there is no guarantee that Antoine Pettway would have made a game-tying shot, although his track record as a senior suggests that he just might have been able to do it. But Pettway would certainly have taken control of the team, as he did so often down the stretch for Alabama, and either gotten a shot in the air or found an open teammate to do so. That burden shouldn’t fall entirely on his freshman replacement, Ron Steele. He’s going to eventually develop into one of the Tide’s all-time point guards, and will win his share of games before he’s done. Earnest Shelton tried to assert himself in the last seconds, as a senior should, but isn’t always able to create his shot. Kennedy Winston, the other likely option, struggled in the last two games in Anchorage, as Gottfried acknowledged. “There was a lot of contact on Kennedy tonight, and I think it frustrated him," Gottfried said. “He’s got to learn to fight through it. We’ve got to get him playing at a higher level, there’s no question about that." Again, there was a missing senior that might have alleviated some of the problems. Emmett Thomas could have come in for a struggling Winston, or a foul-plagued Shelton, and held down the fort. This year’s top substitute on the wing, Jean Felix, struggled even more mightily in Alaska than Winston did. Poor shot selection was the primary culprit, making Gottfried reluctant to play Felix in the second half of tight games against Minnesota and Washington. “We need Jean Felix," Gottfried said. “We’ll work him back in there." That’s a quick glance at some of the negatives from Alaska, but there were positives as well. Chuck Davis, for example, bounced back from being bounced around by Minnesota’s bouncer-sized post players and had a big-time game against Washington, scoring 23 points, grabbing nine rebounds, and keeping the Tide alive when Washington threatened to pull away midway through the second half. He needs more help from Jermareo Davidson, who scored just one point in 22 minutes against the Huskies, but Davis will be a viable inside scoring threat against most opponents. Steele and fellow freshman Albert Weber didn’t dominate the game, but they were matched against some seasoned, talented guards – especially Nate Robinson – and held their own. Perhaps the best thing for Alabama, though, is that despite a good bit of adversity, from Shelton’s foul trouble to Washington’s 11-of-17 3-point shooting, the Tide never waved a white flag. “I was proud of our guys," Gottfried said. “Every time [Washington] made a run, we responded. We just couldn’t stop them as often as we needed." No one seriously thought Alabama would make it through the season undefeated. The fact that the first loss came against Washington is no disgrace. The loss stung -- but it doesn’t have to linger, if the Tide can work out some of the shortcomings that were exposed. -- Roll Tide!! [RollTideFan] Music City Article
Maybe Minnesota at Music City for Bama Monday, November 29, 2004 STEVE IRVINE News staff writer The University of Alabama's bowl game destination won't be officially confirmed until after Saturday's SEC Championship Game in Atlanta. But the Crimson Tide did learn on Sunday that if the Music City Bowl in Nashville is the destination, then Minnesota out of the Big Ten will be the opponent for the New Year's Eve game. Minnesota accepted the bid after Northwestern was knocked from bowl contention with a 49-41 loss at Hawaii on Saturday. Minnesota (6-5) would have played in the Motor City Bowl if Northwestern had beaten Hawaii. But Northwestern is not bowl eligible after finishing 6-6 and the Golden Gophers slid up one position in the Big Ten bowl game pecking order. The Golden Gophers, who beat Arkansas 29-14 in the 2002 Music City Bowl, are waiting to see if Alabama will be their opponent for the 11 a.m. game on Dec. 31 at The Coliseum in Nashville. At this point, Alabama has its choice of playing in the Music City Bowl or the Independence Bowl on Dec. 28. UA Athletics Director Mal Moore gave no indication which game the Tide will choose but said he plans to meet with SEC Commissioner Mike Slive today. Sources in the Alabama football program said the preference is to play in the Music City Bowl. There is a difference in payout, though. The Independence pays each school $1.2 million and the Music City about $800,000. Alabama could also work its way into the Peach Bowl picture and its $2.2 million payout if two SEC schools play in BCS bowl games. The only way that could happen is if Tennessee upsets No. 3 ranked Auburn in Saturday's SEC Championship Game. No matter what happens, it's a nervous time for the bowls, say bowl scouts. "I'd say gut-wrenching is mildly putting it," said Music City Bowl Executive Director Scott Ramsey. Ramsey said Music City Bowl officials have to "wait until the (SEC) office gives us the go-ahead to move through the process." He added that having Alabama come to Nashville would be exciting for the bowl. "It would mean a lot of things, this year in particular," Ramsey said. "The excitement level of fans, the performance of the team, not only coming off probation and scholarship reductions, but also injuries to the quarterback and running back. They are a few plays away from winning eight or nine ball games. I think to have Coach Shula's first bowl game would be a great notch in our belt." If Alabama does play in Nashville it will face a Minnesota team which was undefeated and ranked No. 13 after five games. But a 27-24 loss at Michigan triggered a nightmarish ending to the season, with the Gophers winning just once in their final six games. Minnesota is led by running backs Laurence Maroney and Marion Barber III, who each eclipsed the 1,000-yard rushing mark the past two seasons. Maroney and Barber combined for 2,325 yards and 22 touchdowns this season. Alabama and Minnesota have never played in football. -- ROLL TIDE!!
