Hi

as said in the previous mail to the list we're working on a COM check
that checks the status of the ports on a switch and alerts if there is a
change in the status.

The COM check uses SNMP to get the info and works with snmpv1/v2c.
On the 1st check we will get the status of all ports (can be limited to
type 6 ports too), and on the next cycle we compare the "new" status to
the status of the 1st check, if it's different then you get a down. On
the next cycle we can OR compare it again to the status of the 1st cycle
or to the status of the last change status.

IF you want to beta test this check please me know

I enter the IP for the VCenter host server into the "General" tab as the
"Server name or IP(X) address" and select "Virtual Machine check" on the
"Check" tab. Then I select "VMWare ESX", enter my administrative credentials,
enter the "VM Name", and select the test. I use the exact same information

SA.

You have to enter the IP of the VCenter host on the 1st tab and then the
name of the actual VM. That should work.

When set up a VMware check in v8.1.2746 it always reports as down.

I am setting the IP address to that of the VCenter and providing my
administrative credentials. This works when using the WsVmWare Actions Test if
I check the VCenter box but there is no VCenter box in the setup for SA8.x. I
could try setting the IP address to that of the actual physical host where my

RE: [SA-list] Remote Client v8

2016-04-22 Thread Webber, Ev
Update: the client still disconnects from the SA service frequently but I have
discovered that it will reconnect without restarting the service. It just
takes 15 to 20 seconds to connect. This is not so much a problem as it is
curiosity as to whether this is an expected occurrence or an indication of an
underlying correctable issue.

[SA-list] SAv8 upgrade

2016-04-20 Thread Webber, Ev
I finally upgraded to v8 and have run into a problem with the remote client.
With v7 it connected fine but it will not connect now that I have upgraded to
v8.

(Disregard the above. After a reboot the remote client is connecting fine.)

While I am asking … what is the “best practice” for
administering SAv8 when running as a service on Windows 2012 R2 as a service?

There is the remote client which, as I understand it, must be running on the
same host as the SA service and there is the SA application.

Does the remote client still need to be run on the same host as the service?

What is the reasoning for a “service” and an
“application”? When and how, if at all, should I run the
application?

Just a curious. As long as the service and remote client play nice and work as
great as they always have I am happy.

Subject: [SA-list] Future of Servers Alive

For those who think that Servers Alive isn't evolving anymore.

What is already implemented in the current beta:

SNI (https checks) support

TLS 1.2 (https checks) support

more "rules" (errorlevel check)

output recovery (errorlevel check)

STARTTLS support (SMTP alert)

SLACK alert

What is "mostly" implemented:

Hyper-V* alert (start/stop VM)(some issues remain when SA is running as
service using the SYSTEM ACCOUNT)

What is on our TODO list and will be done:

Hyper-V* checking

VMWare** checking

VMWare** alert

What is on our TO LOOK at list:

CIRCUIT (unify) alert

When will everything be ready? Good question :-) We don't know yet

The current beta is on http://beta.woodstone.nu (http://beta.woodstone.nu)

* Hyper-V will be tested towards Windows 2008R2/2012(R2)/2016 (currently the
tech preview release)

** VMWare will be tested towards ESXi 5.5 and 6.0 (maybe also 5.1 and 5.0 but
that will depend on our testers) - will be tested in "stand-alone" and using
vCenter "integration"

Thanks Dirk ... little by little I'm getting there.

What is the current release version?

Thanks for the years of a great and improving product.

In your template you have the sa_report part, you can filter with that
on the status too.

=> this will force it only to include the DOWN entries.

RE: [SA-list] Is .xml output possible?

2015-08-14 Thread Webber, Ev
I now have a template that is successfully creating an XML file. It is a very
basic output file but has everything I need. It actually has more information
than I need. Is it possible to have the output only contain items that are
DOWN while ignoring all other results? The file is being used to display
status reports to a flat screen in our software development department and they
tend to freak out when then come in first thing in the morning and SA is
reporting multiple items in MAINTENANCE due to our daily early morning
maintenance window.

Another side of the same coin would be “Is there a way to differentiate
between items not checked during the DO NOT CHECK time block and those that are
individually placed into MAINTENANCE by unchecking their entry?”

Hi list :-)

I'm looking at some new things that could/should be added to Servers Alive.
I think that we should have more specific virtulization based checks.
Now the first thing that pops-up is, will it be VMWare or Hyper-V or both?
Ofcourse both would be best, but I would like to know what you
guys are using (and would like to monitor). Also tell me what you
would like to monitor via Servers ALive on those platforms.

Did you change it in all those locations?

[SA-list] Password change ...

2015-03-17 Thread Webber, Ev
It seems I have become the victim of our password changing policy. After
changing the administrative password that ServersAlive is running under I can
no longer connect to the service with the Remote Control client. I have
replaced the password in the client but it doesn’t connect. The SA
service is running just fine using the new password and I can log onto the SA
server successfully using the new password but the RC client will not connect
to the service. I am probably missing something obvious but am at a loss to
figure out what it is.

If you run serversalive.exe directly you are running 2 real full instances of
Servers Alive. This can (will) cause weird issues with the checking and the
output.

It's better if you have the service running to open the GUI via the remote icon
(on the system running the service), that way it will again start
serversalive.exe but in none-checking mode;

Ok, I got SA to run successfully as a service on Windows 2012 R2 by running it
under an account that has administrative rights on the other servers in my
domain. Wien running on 2003 it used to work running as a local account but on
2012 R2 it could not check NT services on 2008/2012 servers until the service
was running under the administrative account. This was the case even though
each of the checks were set to run connect as that administrative account.

Anyway, my question is, “What exactly can be done using the remote client
from a remote workstation?” I was able to get it installed on my

what, if anything, can actually be done from the workstation.

Anyway, my question is, “What exactly can be done using the remote client
from a remote workstation?” I was able to get it installed on my
workstation and connect to the SA service on my server but am at a loss as to
what, if anything, can actually be done from the workstation.

RE: [SA-list] NT service check

2012-03-02 Thread Webber, Ev
It is definitely the firewall because if I turn it off the NT services are
available again. I’ll just have to figure out which specific setting it
is.

We have one of our Windows 2008 R2 servers that just recently began rejecting
NT service checking with an error message that says, “Error getting the

about that. Does anyone have any insight into this issue?

any more entries. I then entered my registration code and restarted. I only
had 10 entries in my hosts file. I had to restore a backup copy. Thankfully I
had one. Your application should not delete entries >10 it should either ask
for registration before loading the file or it should load the first 10 but
leave the file intact. I am surprised no one else has noticed this issue. OR
perhaps my procedure was bad.

RE: [SA-list] URL checks for HTTPS

2012-02-03 Thread Webber, Ev
That is what I am using for most of the checks I have configured but was
running into some problems finding a phrase that was available to the SA check
when checking a site heavy on framesets. I think I am on the right path now
that I have a utility that will give me a comprehensive look at the responses.

Hi Ev,

I’m using a GET with a “should contain”, “this exact
phrase” and whatever working I’m looking for (in my case, its
“Enter Badge ID”). Have you tried this?

I will look for IEInspector. What is happening is when checking for specific
wording in a login page that is based on frames the check is returning as down
even though the page is accessible. I am attempting to figure out what to look
for in order to successfully determine that the login page is available …
or not.

Thanks.

In what way are they a "miss"?

With a tool like IEInspector you can see what is exactly send/received by IE
(internet explorer) and this even for HTTPS urls.

I have been using ServersAlive! for a dozen or more years and am very pleased
with its performance. Most of my checks to this point have concentrated on
server and service availability but now we are ready enhance our website
monitoring by checking more than just whether or not the http or https port is
responding. In attempting to configure URL reports that actually check the
site to confirm the correct page is displaying the success is hit and miss.
(unfortunately a lot of miss) Is there a utility similar to WebBug (only
checks http) that will retrieve https response? Has anyone developed a
“best practice” for configuring successful URL checks?

Thanks in advance for any guidance provided.

RE: [SA-list] URL checks for HTTPS

2012-02-03 Thread Webber, Ev
Thanks for the tips. I was successful using IEInspector to look at the
specific return strings. I am guessing that as I configure more of these
checks I will become more adept in using the tools.

The only way I have done this in the past with SA is right click, view source
in IE on the page you want to check and look for text that you can check
against. Static Html text. I’m not sure SA can check in an IFrame?
Haven’t tested that myself. And of course forget dynamic content.
