Re: Games
I think you've misunderstood me slightly Colin. "Why would anyone want to charge for software relating to a dead computer" should have read "Why would anyone want to charge for dead software relating to a dead computer". What I'm getting at is not the new software which you've produced (and I take my hat off to you for keeping the SAM alive) it's the likes of OLD software titles which are not even in sale anymore. By this I mean EFTPOTR, Famous 5, Sam Strikes Out, Sphera, etc. These are all out of sale and were released roughly ten years ago. Why can I download Lemmings and Prince of Persia and not these? That is ALL I'm asking, and the only answers I'm getting are the fact that these titles (a rather loose term, since no-one seems to know or is just not telling me) are owned by Persona and will be made available for sale in the near future. I'm not blaming you Colin, indeed if you read a recent reply I made to Dean, I actually defended you, since you seem to be getting a lot of flak for things which are not your fault. I'm not getting at ANYONE - I just don't understand why I can download some dead software titles for free, and yet have to pay for others. I spend a lot of time and money doing new stuff for the Sam (probably far too much in both counts) and all this bickering out there does no good at all. There are still a lot of people out there who appreciate new software and hardware for the Sam and I really, really enjoy doing it. I still get quite a few emails every so often with little snide comments about prices. I don't appreciate comments saying 'that's too expensive' when they clearly have no idea whatsoever what has gone into developing then and making them. Development costs of designing and building prototypes, PCB costs etc... it's not cheap producing new hardware on a very small scale for the Sam world, yet I continue to do it and getting slagged for it is certainly not what I like to read in my inbox. One example was the disk drive systems I launched last May... I charge 48 quid for replacement disk drive and interface board, more expensive than I intended but thats really due to having to the costs of getting my hands on the obsolete WD1772 controller, but still cheaper than the original 80 quid SamCo disk drive systems, and it works out about the same as the PC disk drive system that West Coast / Format offered several years ago. Yet I get one or two emails a month to me saying it is 'rather expensive' Thankfully the people who do buy products from me, appreciate the work and effort that goes into them - and I also hasten to add, that I have never had any complaints from people who actually buy the product and see for themselves the amount of work I put into it all. A big round of applause to them, it gives me the encouragement to continue working on new things - my website shows all the new hardware and software releases from myself over the last year - disk drives, 2-way cards, memory expansions to name a few and now the brand new mouse interface I launched on Monday, as well as continuing to release software regularly and another big game that is still in development (although not been worked on recently due to lack of time, but it's still my aim to finish it) Colin Quazar : Hardware, Software, Spares and Repairs for the Sam For all the recent Quazar news, see the new look website: http://www.quazar.clara.net/sam/ _ Join the worlds largest e-mail service with MSN Hotmail. http://www.hotmail.com

Otherwise, at some time in the future we'll be in exactly the same position, and the title(s) will eventually disappear. It'd require someone to think of a figure, and for people to be willing to go along with it - all proceeds would still go to charity, naturally. Kudos to anyone who has already made their software available for free, or is willing to do so now. I only really had TurboMON to give up, but I put that on my website back in '97! Si

Here here. It's a good job they don't own SIM Coupe - they'd probably try and sell that!! When oh when is anyone going to realise we can't be bothered uprooting our attic just to play these games again? And we definitely can't be bothered actually PAYING for them! It's actually rather sad that the SAM scene has ended up like this. Somewhere in the attic is a playable demo for F16 Combat Pilot. How much will be charged to download a demo?!! People like Chris Pile and Simon Owen all supply FREE and excellent software for download - why would anyone want to charge for software relating to a dead computer? Charity my arse... From: "Johnna Teare" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Reply-To: sam-users@nvg.ntnu.no To: Subject: RE: Games Date: Thu, 7 Mar 2002 23:01:31 - yup - infact with MAME you can play the original arcade game! crazy! This whole argument was ALMOST relevant about five years ago when things in the SAM scene were still going, but even the biggest optimist would have to admit that the thing is dead dead dead now. Maybe Colin Piggot makes a few pennies out of it, but I'm more convinced he does it for the love of the scene (and more power to him!). But old games on an old machine have NO commercial value and trying to restrict their use only kills off what is already a dead dido dodo of a scene already. If somebody new came to me today and wanted to find out more about the SAM, what could I 'legally' show them? Jack spratt all. The entire SAM scene was badly managed by a few people who were made into 'mini celebrities' because they were able to cobble together crappy games and make a couple of hundred quid out of them and they are still trying to scrape the last few pence out of it. Give it up. All the good SAM coders have gone on to bigger and better things and still work in the industry and all the crap ones who tagged on 16 colour splodges of mess onto a Spectrum Basic program and tried to sell it to us (whilst all our friends had Amiga's) for £15 are still there trying to play 'Mr Big' still. The best game ever made for the SAM was Defender, and Chris gave that away, on the internet, for NOTHING. Now THAT is what I call promoting the SAM scene, not hanging on to the rights for bodged spectrum games and wierd puzzle games from Eastern Europe with irritating soundtracks. RE: Games
yup - infact with MAME you can play the original arcade game! Unfortunately... it doesn't have invaders... but the Spectrum version does do... Are you releasing this one as well Malcolm, as I'm sure a few Speccy owners might like to buy this classic title? Also the great game Balor did: Turbulence... certainly be nice to see that available again? > It's nice to see that good work on a (dare I say it) defunct machine can > get you a fairly good job. I'm sure he won't mind you saying it was less than fantastic as he hated it!!! He also worked on the PC version of FORSAKEN, or 'Foreskin' as it was nicknamed 'in-house' Chris.

I liked the game, but I was mightily disappointed when someone said that the Space Invaders but wasn't in the Sam version... I did buy Dyzonium, though, and consider it to be one of the Sam's best games (not hard, considering it's competition as a shoot-'em-up). It's nice to see that good work on a (dare I say it) defunct machine can get you a fairly good job. Didn't Balor also work on the Playstation 'Fantastic Four' game, though..? Somewhat...less-than-Fantastic... but I won't begrudge him that.

I'm not too sure if Balor changed the cheat invocation in the final release!! Knowing how his mind works he probably did ;-) >Besides buying the pre-release copy of Dyzonium, I also bought Astroball. Both >are cracking good games (as Wallace might say) and Balor Knight deserves >credit for writing such good games for SAM. Balor received due credit (but sadly hardly any money!!) for Astroball as this was the game that impressed Probe Software to give him a job!!! He's currently working for them writing PC games now, the latest being a full reflective 3D texture-mapped beast to be called 'Revolt'... It's a car racing game with a difference and it looks amazing!!! So, Balor owes the humble SAM a small debt of gratitude, as it's this very machine that elevated him from 'Life on the Dole' to where he is now!!! ;-) Chris.

I'm glad to hear that the games disk features the 'cheat' version of Dyzonium. A cheque will be sent before too long (Don't worry, I remember how to invoke the cheat routine!) Besides buying the pre-release copy of Dyzonium, I also bought Astroball. Both are cracking good games (as Wallace might say) and Balor Knight deserves credit for writing such good games for SAM. If you've never tried them, shame on you. Make amends and buy the new games disk. It'd be worth it for those two games alone, and the added incentive of a SAM version of Defenders is too good to resist. Phil Glover

The version of Dyzonium (written by me old mate Balor Knight) on the Defender disk does have the cheat mode... However; I'm not going to 'spill the beans' regarding the method(s) of invoking it ;-) Chris.
