I just finished re-wiring my generator with new battery holders and a
little LED lamp and pushbutton switch to confirm there's enough oomph!
left in the batteries to at least push 15 milliamps through the lamp.
If it lights at all, there's plenty of energy to make CS with.

If anybody has the Faraday equation handy, you might note that I chose
the .27 milliamp current limiting diode so that 12 hours of
electrolysis would yield something like 13 ppm of silver in a liter of
water. Given that the initial conductivity is actually lower, something
closer to 10 ppm is the actual result.

I like the easygoing operating procedure with this design. I fill up
the canning jar container first thing in the morning or last thing at
night, and cycle it again 12 hours later. I can make a half-gallon a
day that way.

I pour it off into clear 20 ounce plastic bottles that used to contain
spring water.

Simple. Easy. Requires little attention. If I forget and let it go an
extra day, I get a slightly stronger than usual batch.

I started a new batch. I wonder what kinda Herx I'm gonna get when I
*start* taking CS for the first time in who knows how long!!!?

If I really wanted to, a very small DC cooling fan running off a wall
wart would do that job very nicely. It'd take less attention (and
energy) than using ice cubes, too.

Yes, I was thinking of something made of glass or porcelain.

What I need is to spend some time in the housewares and small appliance

Well, the vent is there in the pot I was looking at. It's at most about
a millimeter hole, just enough to release pressure or vacuum. Running
at low heat, I don't expect to lose enough water through it to matter.

Bringing it to an initial boil uncovored is a *VERY* fine idea, ma'am.
Thanks.

Yeah, I'd like to be able to ignore it as much as possible. The ideal
would be to start it in the morning and empty/refill it at dinner or
bedtime. It wouldn't matter if I left it for a while, as long as the
flame was at minimum.

As for the cost, I also need to run up an estimate of the gas it would
take. I'm trying to save part of only about $20 a month, so if it runs
the gas bill up that much it's a wash, except for the fact that I'd no
longer be buying and toting my water in plastic jugs from the store.

A big crock pot would have a lot of potential, yes!

I don't personally find zucchini to be that prolific. I've had better
success with white patty pan squash but they are tricky to peel when they
get too big as many of my squash do. If you have a close neighbor with
squash you may be all right but if not you need a second plant, any summer
squash will do unless you want to save seed. I personally like yellow
crooknecks, they have a totally delectable buttery nutty taste you
wouldn't believe if home-grown. Squash keep producing if you keep them
picked but if I let them get overgrown sometimes the bush just shuts down
and stops producing. I like to have a lot of plants for that reason, and
because I just eat what I grow all summer breakfast, lunch and dinner.

That's an interesting item, Silvia. Too bad we don't have anybody with
experience with it. I'd be interested, too.

I'd recently thought about building some kind of stove-top distiller,
since natural gas is still relatively cheap and I could keep it running
on the stove most days. We're spending a buck a gallon for distilled
and go through 20 gallons a month or more.

I wonder if the 16 gallon stock pot with glass lid I saw at the store
the other day would be useful as a distiller? I could invert the domed
glass lid, moving the knob to the "wrong" side and put a collection
vessel inside on top of a wire grate or metal stand. The steam should
condense on the lid and run down into the collector.

There's a small vent hole in the lid. I expect at least some of the
volatiles would escape through the vent. If the collection vessel
overflows, no big deal. I'd want the collector to have a wire handle on
it, like the kind on a paint bucket, so I could lift it out with a hot
mitt and pour off the contents... maybe a teapot?

Hmmm... sounds like a $50 project versus a $350 product.

Comments or suggestions anyone?

I would take 1 to 2 teaspoons every half hour, or 1 Tablespoon (1/2

If doing the smaller amount, do it at the more frequent rate.

Yes, Mary Ellen, if it turns a bit yellow it's still okay to use. All
it means is that *some* of the silver has formed big enough particles
to become barely visible. There will still be a broad array of particle
sizes and an abundance of ionic silver, too. It will still be
effective.

The main reason we recommend clear these days is we've discovered good
ways to make it and presume that it's better.

This is a classic case of "Don't let the perfect be the enemy of the

G!

So just how long has MY colloidal silver been plain water? God only
knows. It's been at least 5 years since I built this thing in its
current incarnation and I'm still on the original set of batteries. The
last time I checked the voltage? I don't remember.

Time to re-build it with a small LED and a pushbutton battery test
switch. And a better quality battery holder, of course.

FYI, my generator consists of two AA batteries for 3 volts, a current
limiting diode (part# 1N5285, 0.27 ma), a silver eagle coin for the
anode, and a couple of copper wires for cathodes, one on either side of
the coin. The cathodes have insulation on them except for the bottom
1/4" or so.

It will also have a battery-check light, real soon.

I find a reaction threshold of around 120 degrees F, your experience may

"Thermal stirring" typically tops out in equilibrium at around 90 degrees
F with very few problems.
Start where you finish, pretty much the same thing, only a bit faster at

Market in August. It was a real treat when my husband would come home
from work toting a bag of fresh okra on market day.

My favorite recipe is to mix some spices, cut a little slice in the
side and stuff it in, then fry them up. Aaaah.

Glad your garden is going well.

  What works, works.
I find a reaction threshold of around 120 degrees F, your experience may
see things differently.
"Thermal stirring" typically tops out in equilibrium at around 90 degrees
F with very few problems.
Start where you finish, pretty much the same thing, only a bit faster at
the start due to increased conductivity without adding impurities where it
matters the least.

Maybe this is what I am doing wrong. Because I have it set on reverse
polarity, it does take quite a long time. Maybe I should set it on
direct current and warm the water perhaps. How do you warm the
water? I wouldn't have thought microwaving would be a good idea, but
then neither would a saucepan would it? It is a little bitter as you
say too, but then I thought that was because it was fresher than I am
used to. I do rinse and wipe everything with distilled water though.
Many thanks. Dee

THAT'S a zucchini!
I hope you don't just have one plant as they need to be
cross-pollinated. Except some of the newest ones are parthenocarpic-
don't need fertilizing at all. Or maybe that's just cucumbers.

I'm happy for you but it's too cold here for okra so I have given up on

not a bean flower in sight yet. Sigh. This has been the coldest June

Well, enjoy those okra. Sniff. At least I can buy them frozen now in

What a variation in size ?

Believe me, if there ever was a time to grow some food, the time is NOW.

Fortunately, I have plenty of land, good soil, and unlimited water from
creeks, wells, and city water also. ( and a tiny bit of know how )

Soon my problem will be finding disserving friends to give the excess.

I used to sell a lot of produce, muscadines, blackberries and blueberries.

When my wife became too sick to collect the money, I was too busy, so I
started giving it away.

Most did not appreciate the cost, effort, and sweat required to grow
the food, so today I only give it to old friends, that have proven to be
friends over many years.

This week I discovered something interesting. Honey bees do not pollinate
the string beans, instead the bumble bees were doing it. I knew this was
the case with the Blueberries.

And there are 27 hives of honey bees, 200 feet away. I guess they have
something better to do.

I have been picking 5 gallons of squash, 5 gallons of string beans, and
soon will pick 5 gallons of okra per picking. Not a lot, I could grow much
more, but that will make several people happy.
