[RCSE] New RCSE?

I took it upon myself to create this Google Group to replace the soon to
disappear RCSE. I hope this will work out well to continue the fine work Mike
has done over the last 10 years. Google Groups has done a great job with
filtering spam and keeping the system simple to use. Please let me know if you
have and further suggestions. I'm sure there will be bugs to workout.

The groups homepage is:

[RCSE] RE: accident

2008-06-12 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Big Creek and the McCrary family have always been so generous in allowing
public access to the beach below for surfers and beach-goers. I've often
wondered how many times his attorneys have warned him about letting
hang-gliders and R/C gliders operate from their land. An incident like
this could be a pre-curser to losing the site for everyone. I hope whoever
sponsored this event takes more precaution in the future. I understand the
injured person was a volunteer course-worker and suffered a severe cut to
his neck from a participants glider.

I had heard there was a nasty accident at the MOM races at Davenport a
couple of weeks ago.  I think I heard the individual had to be air lifted
to the hospital.  Who was the person and how is he/she doing?
Will this jeopardize any future flying at that site?  It would be a shame
since this is one of our favorite spots to fly on the central coast.
What sort of saftey precautions were taken during this contest?  Was this
an NCSS (Northern California Slope Soarers) sponsered event?
Thanks for any info that can be given.

[RCSE] Best little Tip - what's yours?

2007-11-08 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
At our club meeting last night, I was showing an Emerald that had a little
delamination on the molded wing. When asking the best way to fix it, Martin
Doney passed on a tip he had learned. It's a small thing but it really works
great. He said to take a tee pin and bend the tip 90 degrees about 1/8 inch
from the end. Poke a hole to drip in some CA. After the CA wicks in, just
rotate the pin and use it like a hook to lift up the foam to the skin while the
CA cures.

These are the little tips that make repairs a little easier, what's your little
tip?

I'll collect them and post them on our website for all.

acquaintances in a relaxed setting. Start flying when you want to. No call up,
no pressure. Lots of
flying and fun with folks that love the smell of balsa wood and glue.
Fiberglass fuses allowed, No

I know this is a little off subject, but a long time flyer, Cal Posthuma is
having difficulty with
lung congestion and is in the hospital. He had and operation which installed a
permanent
tracheotomy and is in ICU recovering. As you know Cal has been an active
soaring enthusiast for a
long time and is a 2 time LSF level V and been working on his third time

2005-09-28 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

To answer the question we need to know what you want do with the WD. Are you planing to fly in F5J contests or is it just a fun flying plane?
Current rules for F5J require a speed 400 motor and a max cell count of 8. For fun flying many more options open up.
For the F5J plane the motor of choice is the MFJ rocket with a gear box (ratio of 4.5:1 or greater) such as the Cosmotec. The battery of choice (today) has been the GP1100 (8 cells). Prop selection is based on limiting the current to 12 to 13 amp. Currents greater than 15 a seriously reduces the motor life. I use a 12/8 or 13/7 prop.
For fun flying the Outrunner brushless motors are a good choice. Motors larger than a stator diameter of 28mm won't fit in the WD. We have been testing with OR motors for a new class in F5J. Motors size will be limited. Currently we have been getting good performance with a Hacker A20-20L and either a 2S lipo or 7 cells Nimh. The outrunner motors give a little better climb rate than the S400 and are two to three ounces lighter than the S400 planes. The end cost for the Outrunner set up is comparable to the S400 + gear box. This is particularly true when looking at the cost of replacing the S400 motors on a regular basis.
Take your pick and have fun with either.

You are correct in that you can run the WD on a direct drive S400. However if you are going to compete in F5J you will need to put the gear box in. Performance costs money.FredMcClungAlbuquerqueNM--"Douglas,Brent"[EMAIL PROTECTED]wrote:

I got a chance to fly the Wind Dancer Sunday with the stock Speed 400 geared setup, and it's more than adequate... Dr. Drela says that you can run the SP400 direct, also - the ship is clean enough that it can make use of the higher speed.

An outrunner or a small, geared brushless would also work, but you can get this ship flying well for cheap.

Good luck,Bren

Re: [RCSE] Line FAI events

2005-03-05 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
HI James and others,

we used to use coaster sprockets on our old winches (pre moulded models)
when we pulled less tension and they worked pretty well, but as the setup of
the models got better we started destroying them fairly regularly. We now
use KK series one way bearings with a shrink fit collar on the outside to
lock the bearing up.

In Australia we were fortunate that one of the Modellers designed and made
some Aluminium castings to take the now standard Bosch Motor and the KK25
bearing in a nice package. http://www.airstrike.com.au/winches.htm

Personally I still use a Lucas M45 (used to be a long shaft before I chopped
it and added the outboard bearing) motor (more like your Ford long shaft)
with a similar setup to the Bosch but with a larger diameter drum due to the
slower rotating speed. I still like the original winches of unresisted M50's
:-) 3 times the power of a modern winch.

The winches use a coaster brake from a bicycle on the outside of the
winch. If you hook the chain over the sprocket before launch it has a
positive brake, great for windy days or for using mono line.

Here is an old picture of my winch I found on my web site, one side you
will notice the coaster brake. Sorry, those pix were off my old camera.

That one is easy. We got our first round in when the 'sprinkles' started. We
all ready had 2 tent like shelters set up with our 'feast'. Trying to outhink
Mother Nature, the CD called for a Lunch Break and we proceeded to the chow
line. About the time everyone's hands were full with plates and cups, the wind
came whipping across the field. One late arrival had set his planes near the
tents. Well, we all tried our best to grab what we could but one of the
corners got away from us and the aluminum pole was slammed downright across
the fuselage of both planes. That is how Jim got to be the only pilot that
lost 2 planes and didn't get to fly.

Thanks for the reminder Gordy. Tidewater Model Soaring Society is holding
their Annual Hardy Souls Contest, AMA Sanctioned, on January 1, 2005. We or
someone is going to fly. The Pilot's Meeting is at 0930 and the contest will
be held at the Isle of Wight Field located on Rte 258 between Windsor and
Smithfield VA. Tasks, times, landing zones and points and 'special rules' will
be announced at the Pilot's Meeting.

Last year the temps were in the mid 60's and we had a turnout of approximately
22 Hardy Souls. Of course we don't always guarantee the good weather like
that. One year we had a pilot that 'lost' 2 planes and he didn't even get to
fly.

Warm Regards to all those further north.

somewhat
concluded that one could not use a HL to get a landing task. This

I concur will Bob Andris, if DLG was in effect back then any TD

the simple

eliminated
from the task. In fact, the landings might have been eliminated
totally.

I have seen many flyers go out from a HL long before the HL became
as
popular as it is. We even had issues about people who waited for a
winch
for hours (back before auto retrievers were other than people) only
to have
someone before them in line HL out to a long TD flight.

As for me, I'll sign any voucher for a pilot who HL's out for any

 I'd like to comment.

I just reviewed the LSF rules and didn't find anything that I
think would
preclude HLG/DLG contests from being used for LSF tasks. The launch
methods
are not specifically mentioned because they did not exist in 1969,
however
the rules seem broad enough to not exclude them. Of course, all

[RCSE] Slope Race, Whitaker Peak, Ca March 15-16

2003-02-24 Thread Mike Sheridan [EMAIL PROTECTED]
  Hi Fellow Slope Racers,

The Southern California Slope Racers are announcing a 2 Day MoM slope
race for Saturday Sunday March 15-16 at Whitaker Peak, CA. Two
classes: Both 60 Composite Unlimited on Saturday and pure
Unlimited action on Sunday!

The Location is going to be Whitaker Peak, CA. Whitaker has been
the site of many slope races during the CSR days. Its long ridge
faces dead bang Southwest. There is plenty of room to run the
unlimited racers and plenty of pit area. The landing area is better
than Parker or Vincent, but worse than Banos. We will also have a
backup location close by to race at in case the wind is coming out of
the East. One good thing about Whitaker is that there is a nice
campground about a ¼ mile up the road. There are also motels,
restaurants and markets in nearby Castaic

The 60 matrix will be set at 10:30AM, and the first race at
11:00AM. So if you are going to run the 60 class on Saturday you
need to arrive early. The Unlimited matrix will be fixed at 1:30PM,
racing start at 2:00PM. For Sunday, we will update the matrix at
11:00AM and race by noon.

For information on how a MoM slope race is run and class rules you
can check out this link. http://www.sloperacing.com/Info/mom.htm

This will generally work like the ISR held at Davenport CA, and
will be a great opportunity to tune up your plane and your thumb for
the ISR to be held in May.

The entry fee is $5.00 for 60 and $10.00 for unlimited.

If you plan on attending, please let me know. I need to know your
Name, AMA# (AMA required), Primary Freq. and Backup Freq. The sooner
that I have this information the better.

Running a MoM is labor intensive and we can always use some extra
bodies to help run things. It's a great opportunity to see some big
fast sleds in some close racing. If you plan on working the race let
me know.

Stay tuned to http://www.sloperacing.com/ for the latest
information.

Here are the directions to Whitaker.

  From the South:

Take Interstate 5 North Exit on Templin Hwy (North of Castaic Lake
and South of Pyramid Lake), and make a left turn on the stop sign
When the road comes to a dead end, make a right This road has two
lanes in each side, when the road turns into a one lane road ... keep
watching to your left for a small signboard of Whitaker Peak Park
Make a left into the park, the road will fork immediately, make a
left, and always stay left on all forked roads while going up the
mountain After going up this gravel road for about 10 minutes, there
will be a clearing and the road will level out a bit and there will
be a dirt road to your left (this is where the road is blocked) ...
just follow the dirt road, and if anyone is flying, you will be able
to see planes in the air from this fork ...

Here is a TopoZone map link that has the red X at the parking
spot. The coarse is on the ridge that runs SE from the parking area
to the knob. Looks like somebody made it with the prevailing winds
and slope racers in mind.

Another thing to keep in mind is that you are supposed to have a
Forest Service pass. Information about the Adventure pass follows. I
found this information on the Forest Service web site.
http://www.r5.fs.fed.us/angeles/index.html BTW; It doesn't say how
much it will cost you if you get caught without a pas

Who needs to purchase a National Forest Adventure Pass?

All Forest visitors are required to display the Pass in their
vehicles when parked for recreation purposes on these four southern
California National Forrests You won't need a Pass while parked at
places where a site-specific fee is already charged (such as ski
resorts or fee campgrounds.) You also don't need a Pass when you are
traveling through the Forest but not stopping, when you are parked at
your residence or at an organization camp in its permitted area, or
are in an area covered by a Special Use Permit.A Pass is not required
for people stopping for information at Ranger Stations, Visitor
Centers and other Forest Service offices, or for Off-Highway Vehicles
(green sticker.) Volunteers and educational institutions are exempt,
but require an Administrative Pass issued by a local Forest Service
office.

How much does a Pass cost, and where may I get mine?

*   Daily Pass  $5.00

* Annual Pass - $30.00 (good for one year from the month of
purchase

Full scale... This brings back a piece of memory some 2 years ago
when I was in a Pitts and Tiger Moth as a passenger. When I asked the
pilot why the control stick didn't return to the center when I
released my hand, he looked at me as if I had asked the dumbest
question in the world ! He then went on explained to me that once the
plane was in the air, the airflow would keep the control surfaces at
the trimmed positions. He was right ! he was particularly right about
the Tiger Moth. I had to exert some real force on the stick before I
could move it . Air flow did keep the stick at the netural position
and I could get my hands off the stick without getting any fluttering.

So full scale airplanes, at least some of them, do not have any
expensive digital servos to nail control surfaces in place and yet
they do not have fluttering problems. This had puzzled me for quite I
while before I stopped thinking about it. Anyone has got any idea on
the reason behind ?

Jack, Not sure who to address my question to. Seems as though LSF
does not recognize HLG contests for the Competition Requirements. I
find this strange. One person explained that it was because the
plane is hand launched – not winched (fact). If we can
substitute slope duration for thermal duration, that does not make
sense. I believe it is an oversight since HL was not practiced in

count? Regis

I can remember starting this with a Windward RE model and being so

If all goes well, will make the attempt the end of March and will
post the story (short version) with some pictures.

I have a chance to get this slope flight completed with the proper

servo model for this. (I know, get a paragon.)
Any ideas on battery type to make sure I have the eight hour go?

Re: [RCSE] Antennas in carbon booms

2003-02-21 Thread yclui_hk [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Kirk's test may be kinda rough but I won't agree that it doesn't tell
anything. As a matter of fact, it is in line with the experience
reported by many that installing antennas inside carbon fuselage does
not result in noticeable reduction in range.

Would like to hear some constructive suggestions on how to run a more
reliable test to obtain more conclusive results but pls be practical.
For example, I don't consider it necessary to measure the effect of
carbon on the antenna pattern inside an echoless chamber.

It does not tell you anything.

Add to this that 1dB of any type of RF measurement, is not enough to
make any decision as to whether there is actually a gain or loss in
energy. Also keep in mind that an antenna on a RX with assorted

 test you have generated.

BTW, do you recall the spec for the chipset used in the Vision's

it
coupled in more signal, or that the arrow shaft made the antenna
impedance closer to 50 ohms (the input impedance of the analyzer).

I also tried this at 36MHz and found that the arrow shaft over the

I saved about $12 on the airborne pack by using decent quality

[RCSE] HS 225 Sudden Death Syndrome

2003-02-18 Thread solutionxl4 [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I recently posted my own experiences with HS 225MG servos. I suffered
the failure of four of these servos in the space of a month. The
first was a flap servo on my Hera that failed in flight. (This had
been in the plane about 2 years.)

The other three were on the rudder and elevator of my wife's Chicago
Style RES plane. These were brand new servos in a brand new airplane.
The rudder servo failed first. My wife had just landed her plane. I
noticed the rudder seemed to have been responding a little strangely
as she came in to land. I asked her to wiggle the sticks on her TX.
The rudder wagged twice, then twitched and died. The next week we
showed up at the field and switched on the plane only to find the
elevator servo was dead. A week later, the new HS225MG that I
replaced on the rudder died again.

The fact that the Glider King site has a conversation thread
entitled HS 225MG sudden Death Syndrome is telling. I don't recall
ever seeing a similar thread anywhere on any other manufacturer's
servo.

be forgiving and enjoyable and affordable. There
are now many 3ch electric powered gliders now available that will
meet your needs but none more forgiving and

most will admit to owning more than one radio system. Regis PS.

Call it what you want. The part that broke on both in my

[RCSE] SW Classic thoughts

2003-02-08 Thread GuyR [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Open letter to SW Classic CASL all CD's and pilots.
Guy Russo CD AMA Leader Member

Several posts have been made about the SW event. Hopefully you can
read between the lines and CASL will discuss the event and consider
the input. I plan to attend again as there is much to be gained by
renewing old friendships and making new ones. Coming from Nth Idaho
27 degrees and flying in 80 degree weather in February has it's own
reward. THANK YOU ALL FOR PUTTING ON THE EVENT!

At the pilots meeting the CD announced that there would be no pop
offs and no reflights for broken lines. Challenged on this he
indicated that they always did this and then said something about
they would judge the launch and decide. I am still learning to not be
bothered by things beyond my control like poor field lay out, poor
winch positions, short lines ( less than 660 feet by my paces) and
odd landing tasks. I understand that contests are for fun and I had a
good time! I also go to these events to measure my soaring progress
against some of the top pilots in the world on a given weekend. There
were three World Champions, several regional champions and many
excellent flyers.
I welcome those who fly for fun and those who want to compete. This
is a competition and as an AMA sanctioned event AMA rules and
regulations apply. This post is for all CD's at any event.

AMA 2002-2004 Competition Regulations - Rules Governing Model
Aviation Competition in the United States; 7.2 relaunches. A relaunch
is permitted at the DISCRETION OF THE CONTESTANT when in the judgment
of the CD; 7.2b. The CD supplied launching system malfunctions.

Please see General Information Contest Directors; entrants naturally
assume that AMA regulations apply-and deviations must therefore be
clearly spelled out in advance, particularly in advertising, to
attract out-of-towners. Any deviation from the standard rules as
printed in the AMA Rule Book must be detailed in writing as part of
the sanction request.

No, I did not pop or break a line. I did however feel very sad for
the other pilots who did! If you popped and looped you were in big
trouble due the proximity to trees directly behind the winches. In
the trying wind conditions I feel that pops and breaks should have
been considered. It appeared that later in the day there were some
reflights given for line breaks. Was this left to subjective
judgment? Let me say in advance that we have all seen Larry Leadfoot
break stuff. Larry can de dealt with by an observant CD. If there
was ever an event where a good tow was needed this was it. Short
lines, 10 minute task, obstacle course walk to the landings and down
wind launches or landings and sometime both!
Please read the book and please at any event designate a SAFETY LINE
for the fun fly!
Also, please advertise the landing task and other things in advance
of the event as called for in guidelines
I met pilots from all over the country and many travel at great
expense to attend, please consider these folks next time.

Thank you,
out-of towner

[RCSE] The lighter the better in weak lift ?

2003-02-08 Thread yclui_hk [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I am not too sure. . . . .

It was rather foggy ( so¡K NO thermal for sure ) off the slope today
and the wind was really weak so I flew my Highlight HLG ( I believe
it's the equivalent of Omega in the US. info at http://www.euro-
sailplanes.co.uk/uk/html/sport-hlg/highlight.htm ) thinking that my
model is probably the only one that can stay aloft. Much to my
amazement, my friend¡¦s all-mold mini NYX ( http://www.euro-
sailplanes.co.uk/uk/html/sport-hlg/mini-nyx.htm ) did equally well,
may be even slightly better.

Both models are 1.5m in span and have similar wing area but my
friend¡¦s moldy is twice as heavy as my HLG. The fact that both
models can stay aloft equally well makes me wonder whether weight is
such a dominating factor in determining how floaty a glider is under
weak-lift condition.

I know the information given here is too rough and incomplete for any
systematic analysis but if someone can suggest what MIGHT have
counteracted the weight penalty of my friend¡¦s moldy, I will
appreciate it.

I have came across the theory that up to a certain point, increasing
the weight helps to increase the speed and hence the ¡§Reynold¡¦s
number¡¨ which is supposed to make the airfoil more efficient. To be
honest, I have not done sufficient reading on aerodynamics to
understand that theory well but I did try it out today by putting 10%
more weight into my HLG but there was not any perceivable
improvement. Having said that, the test was very rough so it really
didn¡¦t prove or disprove anything. If anyone has any ¡§thumbs-on¡¨
experience in this regard, I would like to hear about it.

Thanks,

Y C Lui

The report that a model had been lost was widely disseminated in

to pay a reward for its return.

One member of the community who is also a commercial pilot
performed a

On the basis of the information given above, what do you suggest

interest in the case as a number of individuals have been involved

Note, particularly, that the desired outcome is to increase the
enjoyment

involved, there
is no desire (that I am aware of) to punish anyone or reduce the
pleasure
that we all get from the soaring activity.

So. What should we do (individually and collectively) to bring
happiness
 back to the slope?

[RCSE] Painting Fiberglass Fuses

2003-02-08 Thread podrieger [EMAIL PROTECTED]
One of the best ways to finish your fuse is to start with Krylon
sandable primer. Sand this down with 360 or 400 wet sandpaper till
it's almost off and fuse has a nice sheen. Spray with Kryon or
Duplicolor (automive touch-up paint). Let dry over night.
Sand down with 400 wet to just cut the paint surface. Then sand with
2000 grit sandpaper. Be careful not to sand through the paint. Once
you have a dull sheen, polish out with 3M Finesse. This is a white
liquid polishing mixture used to -you guessed it- take out 2000
sanding scratches. You should try a small section to get it just the
way you want as a test and go from there.
This will take a couple of hours one night but your finish will be
mirror perfect. Your fuse will look like a molded finish. After a
season of hard flying I find I just shoot from the wing TE forward,
sand out and polish and it looks like a new fuse.
It will take a little time to get it just right but well worth it.

Good Luck.

[RCSE] Skegs

2003-01-23 Thread bpatrickdionisio [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I'm sure that this discussion will probably never end anytime soon,
but I'm always looking to learn the pros and cons surrounding this
delicate subject.

Although I've used skegs that may be easily mistaken for lost glider
parts, I keep wondering why we continue to land this way, at least in
the upper divisions of competitors.

In the beginning, it did make sense for the novice pilots to practice
and shoot landings without the fear of becoming an insurance
liability.
But now after all that training and practice (or lack of?), and
having acquired barely enough skill to simply be in the same arena
with some of the greatest thumbs out there, doesn't it also make
sense to have absolute control of our glider's energy too?

I trust that this method is not what we want to foster into our newer
flyers and competitors. I've seen the looks on people who are
inspired by our majestic gliders and who eagerly want to play, only
to glaze over at the crunching sound of a beautiful (read: expensive)
toy hitting the ground at a 45 degree angle.

I like Larry's idea on creating a bonus for pilots who wish to
address this energy management challenge for the rewards it offers.
I'm sure it would be a great start to something new and a little more
challenging.

Maybe, it will just take one pilot, one who holds highly regarded
stature, to stand up and proclaim Thou shalt not skeg the earth with
thy glider!. Skilled pilots everywhere will simply follow suit,
leaving all skeg possessions behind, and not ask any questions. I
think I would like to be in that line someday.

I know there are other issues, especially of safety, which create a
wall to overcome.
So for now, I will epoxy on my flame suit, retire to my workshop and
sharpen my skeg for the next contest. :^)

I thought part of the sport of flying was to emulate full-scale

the fun.
I myself abhor lawn dart landings. I think it's a perversion of

my opinion means nothing. Now, if that's what you like, flying
ever-enlarging saw blades and scimitars on your planes, and that's

to look
 at what happened in RC

self-preservation for the AMA. And it would have never come to

 them.

[RCSE] Fixing wing servo covers

Are there any neat ways to fix wing servo covers to all-mould wings ?
Most people just tape the covers in place in order to make them
easily removable when the servos need be serviced. The method is
simple and practical but it's not cosmetically great.

[RCSE] Dallas to New England

Greetings,

I will be flying to DFW (Dallas) tomorrow PM and driving a rental
truck back to New England during the next week. I am hoping to break
up the monotony of the drive with some flying so I will be bringing
two dlgs with me to use for thermaling or light sloping. I will be
traveling on I30 to I40 to I81 to I84 and will be looking for
slope/thermal sites along this route. Any sites within 20-30 miles of
these interstates would be of interest and must be accessable for a
24 ft. truck.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions. I have already found the sites
listed at slopeflyer.com.

[RCSE] MPX interface info (was: You gotta REALLY wanna do this!!!)

2003-01-01 Thread Geoff Sokoll [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I'm not going to give away the hardest part (format of each model
memory) but the following ought to give those keen programmers out
there a good place to start:

INTERFACE CABLE
Details for an interface cable are available on Neil
Gillies Seagull Technologies website.

MEMORY ARCHITECTURE
For an MC3030 with v3.0 software:
1) The MC3030 has 128 memory pages (page 0 to page 127), each
holding 256 bytes of data.
2) Pages 0 to 99 hold the actual model memories.
3) Page 0 is the MX memory as referred to in the MC3030 manual (a
temporary copy of the currently-selected model memory).
4) Pages 1-99 are the memories for the standard 99 models.
5) The higher pages (100-127) contain information on such things as
v3.0 expanded features (eg servo slow settings, ZBV mixers etc),
operating time, and text strings for the LCD display.

COMMUNICATION SETTINGS
RX232 serial port settings:
9600 baud rate, no parity, 8 data bits, 2 (or 1?) stop bits

TRANSMISSION PROTOCOL
1) Transmission of memory page NN from TX to PC -
PC: 0xNN 0xCF 0xCF (import request, page NN)
TX: 0x06 (acknowledge request)
PC: 0x14 (proceed with transmission)
TX: (257 bytes of data for page NN plus error-check character)
PC: 0x06 (acknowledge receipt of data)

2) Transmission of memory page NN from PC to TX -
PC: 0xNN 0x8F 0x8F (export request, page NN)
TX: 0x06 (acknowledge request)
TX: 0x14 (proceed with transmission)
PC: (257 bytes of data for page NN plus error-check character)
TX: 0x06 (acknowledge receipt of data)

Error Check Character:
The ECC is calculated by progressively XOR'ing the 256 bytes of a
memory page.
Pseudo-code to calculate the ECC is given below:
  ECC = 0
  For i = 1 to 256 do
ECC = ECC XOR data(i)
  Next i

To reverse-engineer the model memory formats:
- import a memory page
- modify something on the TX (eg servo centre, travel etc)
- reimport memory page
- compare both results
- repeat ad nauseum

Have fun,
Geoff Sokoll

[RCSE] Custom Battery Checker!!!

2002-12-31 Thread allen2allen2002 [EMAIL PROTECTED]

George Steiner gave me a very cool battery checker
I believe a construction article will be in RCM very soon. It puts a
500ma load on the battery as it checks the voltage. This will cause a
bad cell to show up were, as a standard battery checker would show
the pack as being fine. It is also useful when installing wing servos
as it shows the amount of voltage drop out at the servo.
It is also adjustable for 4 or 5 cell packs

I'll find out tomorrow when the plans for wonderful device will be
available.

[RCSE] RE/ Ejector Pins

2002-12-31 Thread bmuss51 [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hi: I'm a Tool Die maker for 30yrs. And no way I would trust to use
an ejector pin for a wing rod. They may not bend until it's to late
then they will snap. The reason for this is that they are heat
treated. This means that they are hard but some what brittle.
In the past I have found a material that makes a good wing rod.The
material will bend at extreme loads, but most likly spring back to
the correct shape again when the presure is off. And if not your wing
is probley broke.
I have given this material to friends that had trouble with their
rods and they were very pleased and never had a bent rod again. But I
must tell you this stuff is expensive. The material is called VICOUNT
44 and has a rc of 44 but is not heat treated but very tough. Usualy
has to be specialy order from a place that handles tool steel. The
size can come in any size and yes I even ordered it in metric
sizes, and usualy come in 36 lengths which I cut by dremel.
This VICOUNT 44 material i can't supply and the only source I know
of is ASSOCIATED STEEL in York Pa.. SO basicly you'll have to find a
source closer to where you live if intrested.
Bottom line is try to stay away from ejector pins because they WILL
break. Not if! But when!

[RCSE] Can the new generation of computer radios do this ?

2002-12-24 Thread yclui_hk [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hi Guys,

I am wondering if there are any radio transmitters out there that
allows the user to program the mapping between the control slot
number and the control function. My old ( 10 years + ) JR computer
radios have got the following slot assignment :

Slot 1: Throttle
Slot 2: Aileron
Slot 3: Elevator
Slot 4: Rudder

As I am flying sailplanes, the throttle / gear controls are useless
to me but I do need the AUX1 control very often as most of my
sailplanes have seperate servo for each aileron. That means the
receivers I use must support no less than 6 channels ( Thro, Ail,
Elev, Rudd, Gear, AUX1 ) and this requirement has been restricting my
choice of receivers.

What I would like to have is a radio transmitter that allows me to
swap the AUX1 and throttle control slot at the so that I can use a 4-
ch receiver in the following manner :

Slot 1: AUX1
Slot 2: Aileron
Slot 3: Elevator
Slot 4: Rudder

Is this supported by the new generation of computer radio
transmitters ?

Thanks in advance ,

Y C Lui

[RCSE] difference between F3B and F3F machines

2002-12-17 Thread yclui_hk [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hello everybody,

I am new to competition flying and wonder if someone can shed some
light on the major differences between F3F and F3B ships. I have
tried ( may be not hard enough ) to search for internet resouces on
the subject but all I could find were rules and task descriptions.

From the info. given in many vendors' websites, it appears that most
F3B ships can be used for F3F but there are also models offering
different airfoils for difference purposes like MH32 for F3B and RG15
mod. for F3F.

I am in the process of looking for an F3F ship. Any advice on how I
should choose my first model will be very much appreciated.

[RCSE] Painting EPP

2002-12-11 Thread Norman [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Polypropaline doesn't bond to much of anything. In order to get a
permanent bond it needs a surface treatment. In industrial settings
the preferred method is to expose it to fluorine gas but that's REALLY
nasty stuff and not for amateures. A much safer, though less
effective, alternative is ozone. Put the model in a tightly sealed
closet with an ozone generator for a few days and paint it right away
becaus the surface effect of ozone wears off. Anything that sparks,
like an electric motor with worn out brushes, makes ozone, so do un-
insulated high voltage metal plates, like those ionic air fresheners.
If you try it be careful not to start a fire!
