[RCSE] Fusion Fuse Fixed - Thanks!

2002-08-29 Thread Joe G

What the heck did we do before RCSE???
What a great resource Mike L. is providing!!!

I received a number of good responses but went with the basic method
suggested by David Schat and The Gordy which was to heat a wet towel in
the microwave (dish towel for 4 minutes)and wrap and twist. So I wrapped
the back half of the boom with the towel with the fuse in a jig to be sure
the boom stayed straight. Let the boom heat up while holding the vertical
stab just past vertical. You can feel the tension go and when this happened
I removed the hot towel and put on a cold one. Set up very quickly. Whole
effort took about 10 minutes.

In looking at the plane in the bag laying down the bag does press down on
the vertical stab when zipped as reported by Terry Mickle and this is true
even using the large Jim Bagg bag it really presses down in the shorter Bag
Lady bag that came with the plane. So I will leave the stab end of the bag
unzipped and see if this prevents future problems.

Anyway thanks to all who responded!

Therms,

Joe

Re: [RCSE] DARTS contest

2002-08-20 Thread Joe G

Jim B.,

Thanks for posting that excel file! That was just what I needed to convince
me to order a LoLo. It was really interesting to see the rounds in this
format and dude that was some really fine flying. Looked like rounds 4 and
5 were in some really tough air, but a 10 minute sled ride? Pretty
impressive stuff! Do you think a GPS system could be developed that would
be able to download data that would let you see the flight in 3D? That
would be too cool!!!

I recorded both days of the DARTS contest on the LoLo logger, but below is a
link to an Excel workbook (approx. 3mb in size) of just the five rounds
flown on Sunday, the better of my two contest days. This is using the
latest LoLo software that has a few more stats in it.

ftp://66.106.109.240/pub/DARTS_MoM_081902.xls

I am still a little surprised and examining the data, I knew the air was
tough but jeez, I never got above launch height on any flight, and I did max
one of those 13 minute rounds where I flew to the limits of my vision
downwind, but obviously it wasn't very high. I hit a 710 ft launch in one
round, I wish my launches were a bit more consistent, we were being assigned
to different winches on each round, but the variation is probably more due
to conditions.

Maybe the lack of attendance was due to weather, there are usually about 10
more guys at this contest, but too bad for them because this was an
exciting one.

You see, sunny and calm and all good air makes for a nice day out, but does
not test the pilots flying and air reading skills much. Take some marginal
weather, add a little wind, then use a seeded man on man format preferably
with rounds just long enough that most people can't max them and the game
gets very interesting. This was what it was all about last weekend and it
was some of the most competitive flying I have experienced this year.

It's in conditions like this you see pilots have to make tough decisions in
a rapid fashion, make hero or zero moves, and make saves and extend
flights in exciting ways. It's in conditions like this that pilots can
bury the flight group by being the guy that can use his wisdom, skills or
strategy to stay up a few minutes longer than the rest of the guys in the
flight group. And there was some burying being dished up Dayton style, a
dish served cold. But with five rounds flown each day, there was enough
opportunities to either serve that dish, or eat it, even in the same day.

Thanks to Bob Massmann CD, Jerry Shape CD and the entire DARTS club for
hosting a straight up good time contest in a seeded MoM format. The DARTS
club field is a very nice field to contest from, they have a shelter to
provide shade and yuk, rain protection if needed. They have seven strong
real balls winches with all the equipment to do the MoM format in style.

Hats off to all the pilots this weekend, that was some awesome flying guys,
that's what it is all about.

RE: [RCSE] What if....

2002-06-25 Thread Joe G

Well most of you don't know that it was my boneheaded stunt at the Mid-South
that started this thread. I lost a Psyko LT in the Georgia Jungle by
getting way too far downwind. All the posts up to this point have all had
good thoughts but when you lose a contest proven ship you tend to reflect on
exactly what the hell happened that led up to the lost condition. The
factors, at least in my mind, that led to this were...

1. Greed - I was in good air and wanted my time. I did not pay attention to
the position of the plane in relation to what it would take to get it back.
Brainfade one...

2. The wind picked up past the point that putting in the ballast slug was
not only a smart thing to do but was needed big time to penetrate back from
down wind. I had gotten home the day before from farther downwind and about
the same height but that was with a ballasted plane, this time I didn't have
ballast but thought I could do it anyway. Brainfade two...

3. I was past the point of no return when I finally decided to turn for home
(see #1). I had the ship so far away that I really couldn't see what the
plane was doing well enough to fly it smoothly. The only time I could
actually see it was when the leading edge flashed and if that is flashing
coming straight back at you, trust me you are not flying smooth. Add the
fact that I was looking at a major forest to clear and the nerves just
weren't under control either. Brainfade three...

Any one of these brainfades could probably be overcome but three resulted in
the loss of a very fine, contest proven, winning ship. Yes it was an
expensive lesson and I'm hoping that some of this education will penetrate
through the bone that is protecting the pea the next time I start to get
myself in a similar situation. Also if it keeps any of you other thumbs
from doing it that would be nice too.

Therms,

So I'm guessing that you sent the FTC a complaint about that 20 cent a

Jeeze I really wonder if you guys that are complaining about paying for the
best out there in DLG's do the same when it comes to the latest in
electronics or autos or whatever else is the latest and greatest item that
you lust after. I know that you probably haven't tried building a composite
anything from scratch because if you have then you put little to no value on
you time. The guys that are producing these wonder toys (I mean like if
someone had told you that a HLG would be routinely getting over 100' of
altitude on launch less than three years ago would you have thought that
someone was nuts or what??) are providing great products at more than
reasonable prices when you consider exactly what is involved in the process
of getting the product to the market place. Hell I hope all of the
suppliers of fine soaring products make enough profit to keep up with the
demands of just doing business with our little group. So cut them some
slack or do the deed yourself and if you do I predict your tune would

Re: [RCSE] Most fun plane?

2002-06-07 Thread Joe G

DAW 1-26 HLG - My first aileron ship and my first foamie. The plane that
taught me more than all the others before or since. This was the first ship
that I would try almost anything with, you know the loops, inverted, rolls,
etc. cause it just kept on flying where as the previous ones were skeeters
and goldberg's and they just didn't appreciate my landing technique all the
time. It was nice to be able to fly the plane a whole lot more than the
time it took to build it, which was not the case with the crunchies. I
gotta thank Mr. Russ Young for introducing me to the 1-26, if he hadn't
shown up at the dam that day, three years ago now, I probably wouldn't be
flying anything these days.

Good topic, look forward to hearing others...

Jack, if your duck has a BNC connector just use a 500 ohm BNC network

check.

FYI

OK I posted a message over a week ago stating 'Servo City Sucks'

Well they don't anymore.

Here's what happened;

3 weeks ago I placed a phone order for a receiver that I needed for a race,
and a servo. I place the order Friday and needed the receiver by the
following weekend.

On the following Friday, still no receiver, so I called them. Apparently the
order fell through the cracks or off someone's desk. So I placed the order
again.

1 week later still nothing, so I called again. Apparently the receiver I
ordered was now on back order. Would have been nice if they had told me! So
I had them ship out the servo I ordered and added another receiver to my
order, not the one I wanted but at least I could make due.

The following Tuesday I got the 2nd receiver and the servo. They also
included some free servo savers and other misc.

Yesterday I finally got the receiver I originally wanted, having missed my
race. Anyway they were apologetic and sent me another free servo saver.

So while I was not happy with the way they handled this, at least they made
up for it and were apologetic and helpful when I talked to them on the
phone.

If your wondering what a glider would be using servo savers for, they're
not. I use them in an off road racing car that does need servo savers.

If you are dealing with one of the faster/penetrating airfoils, what does it
mean when it is said about the plane that it can 'slow right down'. There's
only 2 ways I can figure out how it does this... trim (tail dragging) or
camber.

Is there something else going on with these type airfoils I am missing?

Re: [RCSE] modification of rule 5, number of models

2002-03-05 Thread Joe G

Well I guess I'll wade into to this one as a reply to Jeff and the topic in
general...

I too am fairly new to the competition scene and if anyone had told me a
couple of years ago I would spend what I have over the last 6-8 months on
planes, radios, flight packs, winch, etc. I would have called them NUTS.
However in making the change from just guiding gliders to competing I
considered the following items and the cost is not as great as I first
thought...

In the past I would buy a kit and put the thing together. I'll use my first
full house ship (Spirt 100) as an example. By the time I had that box of
sticks glued together, all the covering on, the flight pack installed and
the initial setup programmed into the radio I figure I had invested over 80
manhours prior to the first hand toss. So between the cost of the kit,
flight pack and my time I figure that ship cost me in excess of $2,000 (at
the very least thinking this way makes it much easier to write the check for
one of those nice new moldies). Now I know that there are many out there
that really enjoy the building part of the sport and at one time I would
count myself in that number but not any more. I have built at least 30
built up planes over the past twenty years, 20-25 foamies, and about 15
composites. So I think I understand how to construct and fly a variety of
model sailplanes. So at my current point along lifes trail I am no longer
interested in the building side of the hobby I just don't have the time or
energy to devote to the process (and I don't think I'm alone in this). I
bought my first two unlimited ships off posts to RCSE in the last 6 months
(thanks again to the sellers). One was plug in my Rx crystal and fly and
the other was install the flight pack and fly. If I have my way this is how
I will aquire all my ships from now on. I have enjoyed these planes as much
or more than any that I built from scratch, so to speak. I also consider
them the best values vs performance planes that I have ever owned.

So all that being said, it wouldn't bother me if the rule was changed to
allow you to change ships every round. I doubt that there are many that
would use more than 2-3 ships at any one contest anyway since as has been
said here many times contest performance usually relates to the amount of
practice the pilot has put in with a particular ship in a variety of
conditions. Of course blind luck can strike anyone on any given day, don't
ask how I know this, and even a rookie can take home some wood. But a basic
skill level must still be achieved in order for that luck to come into play.
So yes this hobby is evolving and hopefully will continue to do so, and
yes the cost in both time and money involved to be among the top competitors
is high but that is the nature of the beast. I feel it is the competition
arena that brings out the need to push the envelope of performance, not just
in our sport but basically all of them. So I'm all for letting any number of
ships be used at a contest. You still have to have a decent launch, fly the
task called, put that nose skeg on the spot, and do that better than the
next guy every round of the contest to finish on top. Without the skill to
do that on a consistent basis it doesn't matter how many ships you pull out
in the morning.

Vent finished...

Just the other day, I was just thinking about how competitive this hobby has
become. I'm really new to competition, and soaring in general, but I feel
compelled to offer my two cents.

Unfortunately, I don't really understand the rule that much, so that said, I
think that anything that can be done to make the competition require less
technology and money, the better. Remove those two components and you are
left with skill (and luck). You break your plane? That's your fault, you
probably made an error, and the error may cost you the contest if you can't
repair it before the next round. The error could have been in launching,
flying, landing, or construction. This all reflects on skill.

I suppose my main issue is technology and the cost of it. I don't think
that a really outstanding pilot should be at a disadvantage in a contest
because he/she can't afford a $1000+ hot rod plane for each type of contest
and condition. What's next? Airfoils that can be modified while flying...
thermal vision goggles?

I'm sure there are others that feel the same way, and I see evidence of this
in the popularity of RES, and nostalgia contests (at least locally here
where I live).

Thanks for listening.
Jeff

Re: [RCSE] Computer radio programming styles (was: Radio question)

2002-02-28 Thread Joe G

Yep... MPX is the current way to go IMHO!!!

As a loyal Futaba guy for a whole lotta years it pained me to seek a better
way, but MPX is a better way (gotta love that German thought process). Once
I got the Futaba programing outta my head and caught on to the way the MPX
works as Dave said that's exactly what a computer radio SHOULD do and the
ability to switch between 3 modes in flight opens up a whole lot of
opportunity both to improve the quality of the setup for each task (i.e.
launch, fly, land) and also allow you to really screw the pooch if you don't
really do some quality bench flying to insure that everything is working as
planned before you launch that puppy the first time.

For what it's worth:

The reason I bought an MPX is simple: with only slight restrictions, it lets
you take any physical control (switch, slider, stick, etc.), run it through
any of the mixes, and out to any combination of servos. IMHO, that's exactly
what a computer radio SHOULD do.

When I started looking into higher-end computer radios, I was frankly
appalled that they didn't all work this way. All the others (to my
knowledge) make all kinds of assumptions about the airplane and your flying
style. (Case in point: when I bought my first beginner computer radio, a
JR, I had to special order it in Mode 1. That surprised me: if the thing is
a computer, why can't I specify what control does what by programming it?) A
friend of mine is trying desperately to program a flying wing with flaps (2
servos each side) with his Futaba, and can't seem to do it in any obvious
way. (There probably *is* a way, but I bet it involves clever re-plugging of
servos and some non-intuitive mode...)

I don't love the tray-style case of my 3030 (though it appears the new Royal
Evo will solve that problem), but I can live with it, knowing that I can set
up the plane however I want, control-wise. I can even have a Mode 2 setup on
a plane so my friends can fly it too :-)

At 9:21 AM -0800 2/28/02, Bill Swingle wrote:
I did exactly as you recently. Here's my logic in a nut shell:

The highend radios that I could afford are:
Futaba 8U and 9C, JR 8103, Stylus and MPX 3030.

The prices were sort of similar. The 8U was the cheapest and the Stylus
the
most expensive when I was shopping.

 STYLUS:
 1. I would need the dang memory card and glider card. You can't use two
cards at the same time. Thus, the need to copy model memories. Swap the
cards. Then swap back again and recopy back again.

 2. A computer programmer friend (whom many of this list would know) had a
Stylus and HATED the programming. He sold it in frustration and bought an
8U
just because of this. This intimidated me. I don't want to work that hard,
 if I even could.

 3. It was the most expensive.

This eliminated the Stylus from consideration.

The JR, Futaba's and Multiplex are kinda, sorta similar in a broad and
generalized way. Without owning each for a few months, there's little I
could do to discriminate between them. But, I had to try. I came up with
 this:

They will all will do what I want.
The MPX has 99 model memory.
The MPX PC interface is shareware.
The MPX case is a pizza box.
The Futaba 8U is the cheapest.
The Futaba 8U only holds 8 models in stock trim.
The JR costs about as much as the MPX but does less.
The JR only holds 8 models.
The JR PC interface costs an extra $100.
Many of the top glider pilots have switched to the MPX.

After much deliberation, the summation of all the above equaled MPX. I
bought an MPX 3030 and have not regretted it.

area because:
1) It gives me something to do and an excuse to take a
break from my better half.
2) Meet up with the many new friends I've made over the
past couple of years involved in this hobby.
3) A bonus reason, to have a road trip and enjoy the many
activities around RC'ing.
I fly for the fun of it, yes I'd like to shoot for that top
spot just because that is the main goal with competition
flying, but if I don't get there... well so be it. One of
the best features is the socializing that takes place
during these events. Last time I checked there wasn't any
money involved with winning these things anyways or did I
get short changed!? ;-)
The important thing here for me is that these contests
continue so I can keep having a special date to pencil in
on my calendar. Maybe I'm looking at this from the wrong
angle but as least I can honestly say that I have a blast
at every contest I attend. It's another opportunity to get
to know everyone out there that enjoys this hobby like I
do.

Let's just have fun and get on to the flying.
Just my 2 cents,

In the endless persuit of more fun per quanta of energy... Bozo presents:
The Bozo frequency control board with built in thrill monitor and score
recorder.
It's really quite simple, you just come to the field/slope and turn on your
tranny. Then comes the thrill part. It to, is simple...you just listen... if
there are no shrieks, no problem, the frequency in question is clear. If,
however, you here shouts... I aint got it or... oh shit or... is
someone on MY channel..etc etc...This is the thrill part. At least for me.
There are variations on this if you use your on/off swicth in a fun and
creative manner...it can produce a series of fine staccato or a memorable
adaigos.
And then, the coup de grase...a tranny with a tuneable RF module. It IS
possible to work the whole crowed one at a time for various effects. The
portable tape recorder is certainly required for late evening listening and
review.
There you go guys... enjoy.
Your Friend Bozo... comming to a field near you.

P.S. Further advice...try to be somewhat discreet while carrying around a
transmitter with a tape recorder strapped to the bottom of it.

I have been checking out this site for a couple of weeks in hopes of being
able to register for the mid-south contest in June. When I tried to go to
the site just now (and I tried a couple of different links including the
one
from LSF) it bounces me to a search44.com page with links to weight loss
stuff. Anyone know what's up with that???
Also if anyone knows when the mid-south registration will start please let
me know.

And if anyone has a or know of a listing of contests and dates for the
southeast/midwest I would appreciate any info...

Mucho Grass...

[RCSE] Mother Ship...

2002-01-31 Thread Joe G

I lost my big, self designed, EPP wing (6' span) a while back flying above
Maryville Tennessee (BTW the last time I saw it, it was heading towards
Georgia gaining altitude in very good trim with a dead rx battery so if
anyone sees the white topped red bottomed thing say hi for me)...
So anyway I came across an 84 span wing at flyingfoam.com that looks like
it would be a good replacement. Anyone have any comments, good or bad,
about this ship???

TIA for any replies

[RCSE] Profi 3030 Charging???

2002-01-05 Thread Joe G

Karlton and any other 3030 guru's,

I have been charging my 3030 with a HiTec CG335 charger but have been
cycling the Tx batteries by leaving the Tx on until the screen goes dead and
then charging. I've done this 5 times now as recommended in the manual. The
low battery warning came on while I was doing final checks so I put it on
the charger, but... Now I'm ready to fly for the first time with this radio
today but I can't get the charger light to come on unless I hold down the
start button. It is charging when I'm holding down the start button because
when I turn the radio back on the volts are higher than before. Anyone have
any idea what's going on with this?? And please don't tell me that I need a
different charger unless that's the only way out of this box...

Any and all assistance greatly appreciated...

Joe

[RCSE] MPX 3030 - F3B Setup

2001-11-28 Thread Joe G

Would any of you MPX 3030 thumbs out there be able to point me to a
programing setup for an F3B ship or specifically at Psyko? The programming
guide I have found (from rc-soaring.com) has a setup for a F3F ship with a
V-Tail. Just getting into the MPX programming thing and any
help/guidance/etc. would be appreciated.

Therms...

I just bought an MPX 3030. First thing I did was research antennas because
the stock antenna is too long and heavy.

Here's what I was told: The Kavan Powerstick and the Smiley rubber duck will
fit and work. Some claim range problems or glitching; some don't. There was
a disturbing mix of opinions.

Here's what I did: I bought a Smiley.

I've now flown with it and had excellent results. I have no idea why some
folks claim to have trouble but I works fine for me.

[RCSE] Dam Site Closures

2001-10-29 Thread Joe G

Dudes,

Just curious if any of you are experiencing any closures of slope sites at
Dam's. We were ordered, by Corps of Engineer personnel, to refrain from
flying the front side of Percy Priest Dam in Nashville on Saturday. Of
course it was one of the few Saturday's that we had a perfect NW +15 mph
wind. The really strange thing is they stated that is was closed to foot
traffic on the front side (grassy side) due to security reasons related to
the 9/11 incident. However they have not stopped the auto/truck traffic
that rolls right along on the top of the dam. Sure doesn't make any sense
to me and they are really cramping my pursuit of happiness rights. So
anyone else running into this?? Suggestions as to how and who to complain
too??

BTW we can still fly the water side of the dam...

Re: [RCSE] Dam Site Closures

2001-10-29 Thread Joe G

Mr. Page,

You might want to read the post I made before you start flaming my ass. I'm
all for necessary security in light of the recent situation. However if
they are truly concerned about the security of this site why would they
allow truck and auto traffic to run right over the dam? Why would they
allow boats to pull up right next to the dam? Why would they allow
fishermen to stand right next to the powerhouse? Why would they be
moreconcerned about a group of slope flyers who have been flying at this
site for over 5 years than the above?

So if you really feel like flaming me for questioning what I view as a
really stupid situation, feel free, but be sure of your facts and read
through the post to understand the situation before you fire. Also, since
you broadcasted your post, I will reply in kind. You might want to wipe
your head off since it is obvisouly stuck up a smelly place...

Re: [RCSE] Dam Site Closures

2001-10-29 Thread Joe G

Mark,

I agree. But that is not the case. We can still fly on the lake side (I
flew at lunch today in fact). The fishermen are still allowed to fish and
they are walking or boating the whole length of the dam. I just feel that
this is a situation that in which the terroists are winning by changing our
lifestyle. If the dam was closed to ALL traffic I wouldn't be saying a word
about it, but it isn't. As far as I can tell the only people affected are
the slope heads, the kite flyers, the dog walkers, and the gay guys that
used the park below the dam as a meeting place. Am I confused or in error to
think that this is just wrong?

I think the jist of it is, it is easier to moniter and keep vehicle
traffic moving along the dam,
where as either law enforcement or the dam operators may not have the man
power to observe foot traffic, and my self personally, I feel that as nice a
place as it is to fly, it may be unwise to fly r/c aircraft around a dam or
other structure like that. people nerves are on edge and so people might
percive some even as simple as an r/c aircraft as a threat. This may for the
time being be on of the sacrifices that we all have to make at a time like
this.

Re: [RCSE] 9Z Flap Question

2001-10-24 Thread Joe G

Bill,

Understand you frustration, I run into the same type problems with my 8U but
thankfully Don Edberg's book makes up for a lot of the shortcomings of the
Futaba Manual. Too bad he doesn't do a book on the 9Z. Was seriously
considering the 9Z until a conversation with Jack Strother about his MPX
Profi 4000. Now I'm saving up my pennies for a 4000. Seems you can program
each servo individually and mix them anyway you want. Programming seems
fairly simple when compared to the Futaba methods. Know that doesn't help
your present situation but you might consider finding a stinky (re: power)
pilot that would take the 9Z off your hands and get a MPX 3030 or 4000.
Just my two cents worth... 8-)...

OK, here's my question for the day. I have a Futaba 9ZAW. I have it
installed in a scale ASW-27 that has flaps (2 servos), ailerons (2 servos),
and spoilers (2 servos - Y'd together).

Flaps work off the left slider. BUT, ALL the flap movement occurs between
the slider all the way up and the mid-point where it beeps. Anyone know how
to get a less compressed movement. The last 1/2 of the slider motion does
nothing.

Also, any idea how to set up the flaps on a three-position switch?? I tried
assigning the flaps to a 3-position switch, but could not get what I wanted.
This is No flap at pos 1, 1/2 flap at pos 2 and full flap at pos 3.

Of course the manual is useless. Futaba REALLY needs to rewrite it using
actual terminology. They use Speed Flap and Brake Flaps and other such
nonsense terms.
