Hi folks - I am back from Turkey and it was a great event. The senior team
did well despite some plane difficulties and the juniors were terrific
taking home the team silver medal and the 2nd and 3rd place in the world.

I will be spending several evenings tearing up tickets for the drawing. If
you want in, you need to get your orders in now.

I still have a pretty large stock of tee shirts that we will be selling with
free shipping. We will only be shipping out items that we have in stock. We
are out of the polo's and will not have any more. We don't have a magic
real-time inventory system, so ff you order something and it is out of
stock, I will refund your complete payment.

The website will be closed for further ordering at 5:00 MDT on July 11th.

Thanks for all of your support. The team and I really appreciated the cheers
of support, the donations, and the merchandise purchases. YOU make it
possible for us to be successful!

Thanks again.

[RCSE] The Flamingoid Lives!

2008-06-22 Thread Tom Nagel
Friday night was our local club's annual Summer Solstice Jim Clark
Memorial After 6 thermal contest. Best total of three flights after 6 p.m.
wins.We had a large turnout, and did a special flyover in honor of our
recently deceased president emeritus Hugh Rogers. We got as many of Hugh's
planes in the air as possible, including one he had just finished a few days
before going into the hospital. Hugh's daughters and extended family were
on hand.

The Infamous Flamingoid had a bad night, though. It took a perch in the
very top of a 45 foot tall maple back in the brambles and thorn bushes
between the field and Walnut Street. I shouldn't have been surprised.
Flamingoids are known to nest at this time of year.

We know for a fact that it was a 45 foot tall tree because Jay Watkins
has a 40 foot collapsable pole, and when we full extended it and reached up
as high as possible, we were just able to touch the underside of the
flamingoid. That bird was not coming down, and I couldn't get up into the
tree to convince it otherwise.

I limped home Friday night, disappointed in my own loss of depth
perception and suffering from the slings and arrows of outrageous Sovereign
landing patterns.

Saturday morning Don Herbert and I returned to the scene of the crime,
with a stepladder, climbing pegs, a throw rope, pruners, a bush saw and
implements of destruction. I climbed about half way up the tree and used
half the pole to gently poke the Flamingo out of its nest. In a remarkably
short time it started to slide down the outside of the tree---Tail First!

Oh no! I thought---Fractured tail feathers! Fissures of the
fuselage. Then at the last second the hooked Flamingo neck and beak
snagged a low hanging branch.

The Flamingoid wound up hanging by its beak just above the bushes. The
pole pruner nudged it down to a safe landing. No damage!

Overnight in a tree top, a 45 foot slide back to the bushes and it is as
good as new. I realize, that isn't all that good to start with, but it is a
happy ending to the tale nevertheless.

And as always, there is a moral to the story-
as a famous German Bauhaus industrial designer once said: :Form Follows
Funky. Or something like that.

Thanks to everyone for your support. I have decided to not close the F3J
merchandise website this Friday as planned. We are making great progress on
the goal and are currently about $1500 from our initial budget. Our last
uncontrollable expense will be excess baggage charges for our models for the
trip to Turkey. I had budgeted a substantial increase from the previous
cycle, but the outlook of hitting that number is looking glum. Last cycle
only a few pilots got dinged with excess baggage and they were only in the
$75-$125 range. This year we have one more pilot and the excess baggage
situation looks pretty grim. We have heard of the possibility of charges as
high as $500 each way for our model boxes. What actually happens at the
airports is really up to the gate agents and skycaps. We are hoping for
some mercy, but need to be prepared for the worst.

As a result I am keeping the merchandise site open though our return when we
will have the final numbers for our expenses.

It feels like a small miracle to be as close to the goal as we are and we
want to thank everyone that has supported us, and there are too many to name
individually, but between the donors listed on the website and each and
everyone that has purchased raffle tickets or merchandise, we are eternally
grateful!

If you have not purchased any tickets or merchandise, we would still
appreciate your support. And should be overachieve, any remaining funds
will be placed in the team fund for the benefit of the next cycle.

Tickets and merchandise can be purchased at: http://www.usf3jteam.com

Thanks a bunch.

flying rescue missions out on the ice. Maybe he should cover some of the

Hello all,

This Sunday I am holding a 60 F3J contest at Dayton Ohio. All flights will
be off of mini Hi-Starts, so it's time to bring out that old javelin H/L to
fly again! The contest will be in an F3J rules type MoM format. So dust off
that old H/L, put a hook on it and come join the fun. The contest will start
around 11, I will be there around 9 so that you can trim out your plane on
the Hi-Starts.

RE: [RCSE] JR 9303 Flap Programming Question

2008-03-09 Thread Tom Copp
OK to set the Trailing edge in flight modes all you do is switch to the FM
you want and push the little trimmers on the top face of the 9303 the
direction you want the ailerons and flaps to go in that FM. These are the
ones on either side of the JR logo. That's all there is to it. Once you
switch back to Cruse mode the TE will return.

My problem is that I try adjusting the flaps in the flap rates and
camber mix menus, but I don't see any change in the flaps as I move
the various switches for the various flight modes. I'm trying to
program a Berg 4l, berg 7 channel, and a jr700 rx. Is there something
that I'm missing? I've tried to program this like I would my JR 6102,
but this is an entirely different beast.

RE: [RCSE] Fuselage Mold Making Supplies / Advise

2008-02-24 Thread Tom Copp
If you want to make a professional mold easily try this;

1. Your master is perfect.
2. Your master has a hard finish like catalyzed polyester paint or urethane
and a high polish.
3. Make a splitter board. Add locating balls or pins and bushings to the
flange.
4. Make a Steel frame of 1 X 2 welded around the perimeter of the plug
offset by 2.00
5. Use a good carnauba release wax, wax and buff. Let cure and repeat 4x.
6. Use Epoxy gelcoat. Add about .025 thick and even coverage. Apply with a
1/2 brush and start from one end always keeping a wet edge.
7. Mix thick (like mayonnaise) slurry of epoxy and milled fibers and attach
the clean, sanded frame to the gelcoat.
8. Now the fun part. Mix a slow cure epoxy laminating resin with clean white
sand. The kind used in ash trays. You can buy at the tile store. Mix the
slurry until you can't add any more sand to solution.
9. Pack the sand over the gel coat while the gel coat leaves a finger print
but does not come off to your finger. Pack a mix about 1.5 thick.
10. Let cure for 2 days and flip over and repeat the process.

The mold is only as good as the master; the edge and parting line are only
as good as the splitter. Take your time on the master and splitter. It pays
off in the end 100 fold.

It will take less than a gallon of resin to make a 55” glider fuselage mold.

US Composites seams easy to buy from. I haven’t shopped there so I don’t
know first hand.

So far I have done an F4F and an SR-71 and a Wildcat and an FA-18, and

Out West we:
Can sand bumps but keep them visible. Haven't noticed any improvement in
flight.
LE with tape is OK. Taps as a single layer and not 100 plies for changing
the airfoil.
Stock Control size only.
Carbon spar OK
Move Tow hook.

We normalize the carbon spar by using a light zip start so no winch wars and
a stock EZ launches as well as a modified EZ on these. If you winch the
Carbon spar is the ticket.

David,

Launching without turning the transmitter on is a symptom of a greater
problem. You must build a routine that you consistently follow each and
every time you launch, otherwise you will make this and a bunch of other
mistakes.

Most of the problems occur if you let yourself be rushed, either by
external circumstances, or by a desire to join the gaggle in the monster
thermal just off the launch.

There are so many ways launches can go wrong that your proposed device
may save you from one problem, but the others will be sure to bite you
instead.

As a reformed sinner myself I speak from bitter experience.

David Webb wrote:
Gentlemen, I would like your feedback on something I created last
season in a bit of a whim. I have been competing at various TD tasks
in the Northwest over the last 3 years. Over this time I have
witnessed far too many launches where the pilot after the fact
admitted that he/she did not turn on the aircraft. Needless to say
most of the aircraft were lost or seriously damaged. So in search of a
solution I went to a local electronics shop and asked a young guy if
he could give me a hand designing a safety component that might help
 avoid this scenario.

Basically we designed a switch with a small tilt sensor and some
latching circuitry. The result is this:

If you remember to turn on the plane the switch works as expected. The
plane powers on and off as it would normally.

If you turn OFF the plane and tilt the aircraft in the desired launch
angle ( this is set by the pilot) the plane turns ITSELF on and stays
on until the circuit is reset by disconnecting / interrupting the
battery. The draw is tiny and the circuit and switch itself 1xx .25
or double the size of a typical 20 amp RC switch. I have tested the
product in the lab and i know a shop that could likely get the size
down to half its current size or close to the size of a standard
 switch

This would of course cost some money out of pocket but I am not sure
if the target market is too limited to bother creating this solution
for. For the most part, the elite pilots I watch either don't even use
a switch or are very disciplined in their launch methodology. The
target market is more appropriately general pilots who may be
approaching the more senior years as well as new pilots.

What do you think people? At your local club have you seen anyone toss
an un-powered glider to its death? Would a product like this be of
value as a replacement for the standard on off switch for your more
senior members or new eager soaring enthusiasts?

[RCSE] Tree Stories

2008-02-01 Thread Tom Nagel

Guys:

I have really enjoyed the Tree Stories. First, they remind me of the
incredible variety of ways that we as a group have found to screw up process
of launching and flying RC sailplanes.

And secondly, the stories all make me feel a whole lot less stupid than
I normally appear. (Did I word that correctly? I think not. Never mind.)

does is glide out of your hand.

I looked in instructions and saw nothing referring to launch of a sailplane.

The on screen instruction is point with mouse and hit any key.

I am pointing into the wind. I do not have spoilers out.

RE: [RCSE] Contest Format

2008-01-11 Thread Tom Copp
Wow lots of stuff here.

In general contests outside the USA are well attended. Contests attendance
inside the USA is diminishing. Why?

Outside the USA they typically fly F3J or a local version of F3J with F3B
winches that the pilots supply btw. They are strict about being on the line
in time; they don't soften the task for anyone. They play hardball over
there and their attendance is thriving.

Inside the USA most of our formats are the same since the late 70's while
our models have evolved over the last 30+ years the contests have not. Our
attendance is shrinking, we give in to a sandbagger, and we don't want to
change anything to keep the pilots we have coming back. We don't push
ourselves to try anything new and learn something. Sure the new guy has lots
to learn starting from zero but after 6 months what is next? Guys soaring is
not difficult.
How many of us are significantly better pilots after the first 2 or 3 years?
What have you learned the last 3 years? We quit flying if the conditions get
a little rough. You can choose your issue all day long as why we get board
or why attendance is shrinking.

BTW, Each and every contest I have been to is a social event! That's the
nature of humans. We tend to have fun when we can. I would say lets play a
little hardball and push our skills a bit and move up a peg. The USA was at
one time a soaring leader we sure can't say that anymore.

Yes, I see the same thing too. The Europeans make F3J and F3B the F1 of
soaring and because they do they bring in the new guys.

You will get your butt kicked when you start out and what do they do to help
you? Nothing.its sink or swim. The best teacher I ever had was a good ass
kicking! Getting old? Can't see? Tough, move over old man there are 50 new
guys waiting to replace you.

No one is complaining about buying a winch or model and in many cases it's
more difficult over there to come up with Toy Money plus the cost to
travel to a comp is expensive. Yes sure Europe is small but have you ever
drove from Spain/France to Germany? Shoot the toll fees will exceed the cost
of fuel (at 8.00+ a gallon!) yet contests are full and the parties are well
worth the effort.

The USA TD contest pilots are dieing. I mean literally dieing (RIP) no new
blood. The writing has been on the wall for years.. Its time to read the
wall.

[RCSE] 1000 W generator $149

2006-10-13 Thread Tom Broeski

http://heartlandamerica.com/browse/item.asp?product=1000-watt-gas-generatorPIN=33603GUID=51430674-5E55-4236-B37B-F301E5A1B514DL=HWH1

Ran across this and think it would be perfect for
keeping contest batteries charged. My Honda 1000 cost $800. Figure
at this price you can't go wrong. 1000 w keeps my TV VCR/CD and a couple
lights going during power outages also.

Re: [RCSE] Woody Ladder task with fly off for Wood Crafters 07

2006-10-12 Thread Tom Broeski

Not very ladder like, but should do the trick.

The only other thing would be a 10 min flight silent timed (means you have
to count in your head and your timer only tells you your time after you
land).

We've done this before for shorter times and I think Ed Arnauden was within
a couple of seconds.

this is what I came up with for a fly off task for those pilots that
qualify

for the fly off.

two rounds.each in a 17 minute window.. of two flights each
round:

First Round :

One 2 minute AMA precision duration task and one 10 minute AMA precision
duration task.

Pilot calls the flight during the first minute after launch.25 ft. 100
point landing tape.

Second Round :

One 2 minute AMA precision duration task and one 8 minute AMA precision
duration task.

Pilot calls the flight during the first minute after launch.25 ft. 100
point landing tape.

Tom,

Maybe a good way to add some more spark to this event and lower the
fatigue

factor (been there and done that) is the CD could determine a max level of
steps or a predetermined cut off and have a fly off of the top five or
some
number of contestants. Probably base the number to qualify for the fly
off

on the total number of contestants.

what do you think ?

They had it at Lancaster Woody in August, and some of the pilots were too
wiped out to come back and fly the next day for the standard TD. It is a
great task, but can be really grueling. I clocked nearly 5 hours of air
time to get a 31 min flight. (Object is not to fly 24.5 min of a 25 min
flight). Three minute spread would definitely be better. Don't forget to
have a required lunch break to keep the pilots from killing themselves.

Here is something different for sailplane contests that has a lot of
 flying
time and is all about soaring, although a optional landing task can be
 included.

I prefer the three minute ladder after running the two minute ladder for

[RCSE] Getting Bombed at MOSS Field

2006-10-08 Thread Tom Nagel

It was a beautiful early October
day at MOSS field, the little berry patch out northeast of Columbus that our new
member Gil Perez calls "The Tree Farm"

We had clear blue skies, light
winds, lgreat thermal lift, a handful of club members, a few visitors to
the field and spiders. Lots and lots of SPIDERS!

I think these things are called
parachute spiders. They sit in the bushes and tree tops and spin out
long lengths of spider silk, and when a thermal comes through they go sailing
off across the sky. Our planes were coming back with hundreds of
strands of spider silk (and presumably some pretty pissed of spiders) draped
across the wings.

 One of the families that
strolled by on their way to hike down by the lake had two sons; so we broke out
the Air Hogs and did some recruiting. Dad and the older boy both flew air
hogs successfully and I have a feeling we may see them again.

 And we got bombed. I
have been wanting to experiment with "bomb drop" as an event for our electric
flying. I had made up some fiber board disks about 2 1/2" in diameter,
painted white with a big red X and a hole drilled in the midde. We
strapped light dowel rodsto the fuselage of some planes just aft of
the wings (vertically, like little antennae) and dropped a bomb disk onto the
dowel.

The idea was to fly over the
target, loop or roll or whatever, and let the disk fall off the dowel onto the
target.
The best Bill Hoelcher or I
could do was about 25 yards from the target. I am sure Gordy will have
plenty advice for us about getting bombed. Practice practice
practice.

I hope you all had a good
afternoon, too.

I came across this new type of UAV:-

 http://veratech.aero/phantom.html

It seems to be a very odd looking sort of model helicopter that's
designed to spoof the eye into thinking that its not hovering in front
of your face. Its not a sailplane, of course but its interesting that
its possible to build a flying device that can trick our eyes into not
seeing something that's there (since I seem to spend a lot of time when
flying looking for something that's there but it seems to have
 disappeared!).

Re: [RCSE] Top end speed in MPH ! Math quiz

2006-09-26 Thread Tom Kallevang
Here are some specifics for your word problem:

The McCann winches used at the AMA/LSF Nats and LSF WSM are 2 inch
cores on a 6 inch flange.

Winchline used is Memphis Net Twine TWB-30, 290 pound test braided
nylon line.

Two spools of this line fill the winch drum almost to the 6 inch flange
limit, giving approximately 680 feet (207 meters) to the turnaround.
At the WSM, we reduced the distance to the turnarounds to approximately
150 meters.

Have fun with the math ...

The contests were definitely more attainable
then. My first CASA Opencontest at the Polo Field hadover
100pilots. That wasonly 10 years ago. I got many
of my contest points at the monthly CASA contest at Manassas Battlefield.
Now findingeven 10 pilots for a monthly contest anywhere in VA is nearly
impossible. Winning a monthly club contest was a lot easier than the ESL
or a NATS.

They do a flyiing order thing, that last the day, so you can get caught
  in a cycle
I decided at the start of the Casa event last week that I was going to
fly opposite to the big dogs, if they went right off the launch, I was heading
left. It cost me, but I had sooo little time on the Perfect that I
wanted to force my self to learn it quick.

Did the same thing today in that first round, the left was obvious (birds
etc), so I went right. Cost me a minute and those guys don't usually
give up more than a few seconds. Speaking of second, I also decided not
to use a skeg before the Masters, and that cost me both in both events
  too.
Today it cost me a zero when I slid thru the landing spot, refusing
to stick any of the landings.

The second to last round (5 rounds of 8mins) the leaders took a HUGE air
time hit, and that left the door open for me to seek up somebut Chuck
Crobinet, was too steady all day long with his Supra (at least 4 were flying
today, (easily the most popular ship of this season), so he earned his "I Beat
Gordy Button!" and left me the bridesmaid again! ;-)

I ended the day of fun flying with a crack in my Perfect's lower rudder
hinge and a split seam in the tail boomyep i was practicing Mark
Smithboinkfor time, then hit the spot for points.

I got two perfect attempts right off the bat but the third one got away
from me and I came to the spot too hot and the wing bumped my thigh and torque
the fuse pretty well and it spun around to doink the rudder a bit.

Mostly cosmetic but a that's what I get for goofing around with a beauty
  ship.
I dropped Joe Melchior at his Mooney, and proceeded to drive away,
little did I realize that the milk carton of metal parts knocked my tailgate
open, it and my Sportube blew out and I didn't notice till I was about 30miles
  away!

I went all the way back and there they were, parked on the grass next to
  the driveway...very busy area too!

Too much drama for the end of the day and only about 3 hours of
driving to get to my next beach!
  Gordy

Re: [RCSE] Re: LSF Discussion

2006-09-14 Thread Tom Broeski

Jeff,
Good to hear positive input.
I like the first one. But more realistically 9 am to 3 pm or anytime, any
day, dawn to dusk (6 flights in a row no less than 30 min apart - 3 sec off
and 90+). More like open winch. MOM would take into consideration the
actual air, so this is a pretty tough task. Don't forget, you need 3 of
these for V.
It's more a matter of finding witnesses for an 8 hour day. 3 to 4 hours
might be possible. It is something that takes commitment and yet can be
done most places as long as witnesses could be non LSF. Might be able to
get some of the younger pilots to hang out as witnesses if the age were
reduced to 16. Will take a lot of weekends to accomplish, but at least
there's no travel expenses. This is probably tougher than winning a real
contest or MOM contest, but you can do it every week for a couple years.

T

I'll keep on-line records for any individual or group, formal or informal,
that want to give this a test try. Honor system is fine as long as you have
a timer. Too easy to be off timing yourself. I usually fly alone, but can
get a non-flying timer person or family member. Having an on line group to
compare skills with is at least some way to know where you stand.

I'll set up a site and let you know when it is done. Just email me here if
you want to sign up. [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I am sorry but in the ESL the point off max can be as little 40 points for
an entire contest.
I'll assume the same occurs at other contest where top notch pilots
frequent.

It doesn't happen everywhere, but it does happen more than you think.
5.5 feet won't put you in the top 3... probably not in the top 10.

Look, if you made the task something like
Saturday or Sunday from 8 am to 5 pm you must have one 10 minute flight
with an L4 landing of 90 or better once every hour, with only one attempt
an hour.
Sun - Wed if you started on Saturday. or Monday - Thurs if you started Sun
go out at the same time each daybetween 8-10 am or 5-7pm and put in one
10 minute flight with L4 landing of 90 or better with only one attempt
Time of perfect allowed 3 seconds. Once you choose the time to go out you
must keep that time for each daily attempt. You must fly the attempt each
following day.

That would be a serious attempt... Why the comittment is there, the task
is quite tough, since you MUST find air each time, and must land each
time.

The pressure is off from a contest perspective.
You aren't guaranteed good air .. by having this you have simulated the
difficulty a contest pilot has in that he can't choose his air... he has
to fly
This is only a thought... but in reality I am sure someone will figure
out where I have erred... But 3 in 1 hour is easy...BTW you'll be
surprised how easy it is to hit the 10:00.

I've got to say that doing it in a contest is still more challenging, and
fun.

I've stated elsewhere that there is no exact equivalent to competition.
This alternative proposal is simply that. For those who want the

The three flights constitute one task. This task must be repeated six
times on separate days.

The air can be great all day long or it can cycle through every few
minutes or anything in between. Another comment on this thread voiced
your same concern. If the powers that be believe that lift is likely
to be more or less uniform during the one hour period, the requirement
can be for three flights to be flown at some other *specified*
interval. The point here is to require the pilot to fly in air and at
times not of his choosing -- more or less like competition.

If you think the task is easy, demonstrate it to yourself by going out
and flying the task six times with a 2350 score each time. (50 points

[RCSE] New Individual Contest challenge

2006-09-14 Thread Tom Broeski

Okay, I've set up a new ICF (Individual Contest Format). I will pay for it,
administer it and keep track of it for now. I am offering awards and
recognition for achievement. Let's see everyone put their flying where
their mouth is. Let's see who will be first to turn in a perfect score.

Link is:
http://adesigner.com/brass
click on ICF at bottom of page

I will make corrections if I've made some errors in set up, or math, but
WILL NOT change the format. It's a lot tougher than it looks, but not so
tough that it can't be achieved. It is for the sake of having fun and
showing what you can do in a contest type format. It is set up for those
who can't get to contests, or who just need some structure to practice for
the next contest. Has

nothing to do with LSF, ECSS, CSS, PQRS or any other existing program.

I figure someone has to actually DO something instead of talking about it,
so support me on this and sign up and lets see how you rate against the
competition.

Please forward this to RC Groups or any other place you think will be
interested. If you don't like it, please don't comment, just don't sign up.
I will be posting all attempts that are sent to me, from novice or expert
alike. It is what it is and not supposed to be anything else.

Re: [RCSE] LSF format Discussion

2006-09-13 Thread Tom Broeski

Sounds pretty good.
I would like to see any witness over 21 for I- III and two for IV and V with
at least one being AMA registered. This is very important to those in small
or power clubs. Also, since the tasks are basically the same, if you have
already completed them, you may try for your next level based on these
options and do not have to start over. EG if you are level III now you can
complete IV with these options. Since options have always been a part
of the achievements (ie slope/td), this is nothing really new.

If you are able to complete the new contest format, you will have had a
lot of practice and if you were able to travel extensively you could get the
win in either format.

As you say, laws have changed making it difficult for many to do the cross
country Legally. Can't have LSF promoting illegal activity. However, I
think the requirement should include that you must also travel the closed
course. That means in a vehicle or on foot. You cannot just stand in one
place. That would mean traveling your field boundaries if the course
exceeded your field size. Or if on the road, the full course. I can't find
anywhere here to do the 10 K in a straight out and back (or even a crooked
one), but can find numerous areas where a large lap could be done of four
2.5 K runs.

I will gladly supply award certificates to the existing LSF V's that say LSF
V MASTER to anyone who feels this somehow takes away from their
achievements.

I see nothing Sportsman Level about the revisions to the program and would
suggest that LSF seriously consider the options be included in the current
program and that it be adopted and the only program, since these are
options and doesn't change the intent or level of difficulty. It merely
addresses today's environment.

The points for the contest format should be able to be determined by the LSF
secretary by looking at the average winning scores for the last 10 or so LSF
level achievers or just checking a number of local and regional contests
with 20 or more to see what the general win average is. If the average is
around 100 points off max, then three rounds in one hour totally 2900 might
be reasonable. (or whatever the average turns out). Average means if 10
rounds were flown with total being 200 points off max, then the average
would be 20 off max. Determining this number will probably be the toughest
task. You will likely find a big difference between the ones who got the
win at a monthly club contest and those that got them at larger regional or
national contests. You would also likely find that the scores many years
ago were way further from max then the scores of today. Difference between
a Paragon and an Icon.

I though the idea of XC was to travel. If you aren't going cross country
you aren't doing cross country. I figured if you can't take a golf cart,
truck or some vehicle, you could walk it. (no it would not be easy).
I guess instead of XC you could call it an option to an XC task. Like
slope is to thermal now. To stay in one place is more like a thermal task.
Any way you want to propose it is okay with me. I'll still participate.

It is not entirely clear to me that the benefits of being required to
travel a closed course outweigh the possible unintenced
consequences.

As it stands now, the accepted practice for the Level IV and Level V
Goal and Return usually (but not always) involves the use of a vehicle
with a driver and a spotter -- presumably your two witnesses. This
requires the aspirant to arrange for transportation, arrange for a
driver and a spotter and to determine a course -- these are the
logistics of the task. The aspirant is not required to walk the
course, rather he remains in more or less a fixed relationship with the
plane he is flying regardless of the length of the task. This
relationship is more or less consistent with the relationship the he
would have in the proposed alternative. The proposed alternative
requires the aspirant to arrange a gate or equivalent system to
ensure that the flight is measured properly and to arrange for people
to man the gates (again presumably his witnesses) -- these are the
logistics of the revised task.

You are suggesting that in order to complete the goal and return task
that the aspirant and a spotter walk the entire distance. This adds a
degree of physical exertion which is not present in any other soaring
endeavor -- not just LSF. Perhaps its your intent to include this as a
barrier to separate the sheep from the goats. Respectfully, I am an old
goat and adding a 12 mile hike to this task is problematic-- especially
in the middle of the kind of hot day when success at this task is most
likely (our hot days are 100 degrees+ and humid). Further, not
everyone flies on a sod farm like I do. Walking even two-and-a-half
miles in a wild field while trying to keep your plane in sight is more
of an acrobatic feat than an aeronautical feat. Remember, the median
age in our sport is 55+ and if you've ever looked at a pictures from
current sailplane events there are quite a few guys who look like the
only push-ups they do are pushing away from the dinner table. (perhaps
we could add an overall task alternative which posthumously awards the
aspirant's last level in the event that he dies trying :)

Just doing my periodical search on this site for John Derstine. There
has been no new news since last February and we're not expecting much
these days, it's almost been a year since he disappeared. As upset,
angry or hurt as we may be I appreciate everyone keeping a respectful
mindset and for anyone who doesn't it is truely a shame.

[RCSE] Ideas

2006-09-07 Thread Tom Broeski
It's amazing how many people spend so much energy attacking anyone with a
new idea. Finding every possible way to crush it. If the same energy were
spent in helping the person turn the idea into something workable, even if
not the norm, there might at least be a few more people trying to help the
sport instead of giving up out of frustration and disappointment. If you
can't find a way to help don't put walls up in the way of those that are
willing to try.

Heck, in my business, when someone comes to me with an idea, I can often see
that it won't work very well. My job is to sit down and work with them to
figure out HOW to make it work, not just tell them to forget it. If it
works out, great. If it doesn't, at least they tried.

I don't know who Tom (Liberator on RC groups is), but he has my support to
try anything that will help the sport of soaring. Keep the LSF current
program and try something new -- can't hurt.

T

I don't know who came up with the retriever cart at CRRC, but if that was
shot down instead of a group working to engineer it and get it working
nearly flawlessly, they'd still be shagging chutes by hand or be spending a
lot on fancy retrievers. They figured out a way to work together.

A little note on status quo: We bought a farm in VA and there was a toilet
in the house but it was not connected. The farmer said that it came when he
had the house built, but he only used the outhouse. It was good enough for
his father and like his father always said it makes no sense to s--t inside
the house. Well, I connected up the toilet since my father wouldn't have
minded.

Re: [RCSE] LSF discussion Contests

2006-09-06 Thread Tom Broeski
I love competition. However, unless you live near a big club, there's little
chance to find contests with 20 people +. The idea of developing skills and
enjoying the sport is the most important aspect in my opinion. If there's no
way to do the competition circuit unless you are very well off, it keeps a
lot of flyer's from doing any tasks. I believe it is important to attend
some contests for the experience and comradery, but not have to win some
with 20+ people. Newbies are the most affected by the expense of going to
far away contests. Those that have the luxury of monthly contests and/or
can afford to attend contests are the ones who tend to support this aspect.
I signed up a number of LSF flyers (5 or 6 at least) and all but one got
stopped by the competition aspect (he moved away to a bigger city closer to
the competitions and is doing very well). This part was great in the early
days of larger clubs, but with the difficulty of even keeping a club going,
the level of competition required for LSF is more than daunting. It
pretty much eliminates the smaller clubs with only a few members. I think
having just an attendance requirement of 3 or 4 contests with 10 or more
over the course of the levels will provide the experience of contests
without limiting it to just the rich and infamous. Another tough aspect
of LSF is the requirement to have LSF witnesses. It's basically impossible
in my neck of the woods at this time.

I don't see any problem with LSF changing with the times, if those that are
in the 121 are kept separate and recognized for their super achievement.
Having two types of goals you can select for LSF (TD no contests, 21 or
older AMA witnesses) and the existing one might open it up for a good many
flyers. I know it would help the many hundreds that signed up but stopped
because of contests. I doubt that it would be that difficult to have two
different sets of task sheets within the existing LSF. Jim Deck

If someone wants to set up another achievement program, I will gladly
participate and still work on my LSF V in the current format. I will also
volunteer to help Tom, Larry, Bill and Steve work out the details of an
additional set of goals based on the needs and resources of the smaller
clubs.

As a diversion from the LSF angst, I'd like to briefly resurrect an old
thread. Shortly after NATS there was a flurry of dialog regarding 2M design.
My comments, in general, suggested there was still some room to upgrade 2M
designs, look more closely at the Drela airfoils, optimize planforms at the
wing loadings we could achieve, etc. etc. So for the last 6-8 weeks that's
been a fun project. The result is a poly, aptly named the Kahuna 1.8 (2M
doesn't quite fit in the bed of my truck so we opted for 72 span). Although
a poly, it's intended to be a validation platform for trying a few things
out. Basically a V-tail, pod and boom, Drela section, optimized planform for
the wing loading and still winchable at an AUW of 19.5oz. The structures are
basically similar to DLG but without the need for a sub-rudder. Other than
that (and swapping out the airfoils), it's more or less a discus on steroids

[RCSE] Pike Superior pulls out a squeaker over Flamingoid

2006-08-25 Thread Tom H. Nagel

MOSS held its umpteenth annual "Hanford Memorial " contest
last night. It doesn't have anything to do with nuclear waste facilities,
fortunately.

Ed Hanford years ago laid down the
challenge:

"I'll bet $5 I can outfly anybody in the club after 6
p.m." So each August 24th we go out and try, and the
longest single flight after 6 pm wins the trophy, which is Ed's $5 bill, framed
for presentation.

Lift last night was scarce, but we had
about 20 club members and a few spouses on the field. Paul Wiese did 5:05
with a Pike Superior in essentially zero lift conditions. That was the
mark to beat.

I found a soft bubble with the Infamous
Flamingoid and did 6:45, and for the first time that I can remember, I was in
the lead in a club contest.

Paul came back and squeaked past me
with a mere 21+ minutes, finding the only real thermal of the night.
The 6:45 held up for second.

Todd Anderson kicked my butt at Air
Hog, though. He laid down the challenge: see who can sit in a lawn
chair and launch and catch their Air Hog the most times in a row.
Then he proceeded to log two catches. I logged a total of
zero.

We ran out of daylight before we could
do the Air Hog pylon, limbo or combat. Or even better the Air Hog
pylon-limbo-combat. Maybe next time.

Tom H. Nagel

Judicium ProcuratorRecuperatio

[RCSE] Butch Never Would Have Done This

2006-08-22 Thread Tom H. Nagel

So we were driving home from vacation
up at Lake Erie, and the Air Hog fell off the top of the luggage and the
dog (actually the auxiliary dog Jamaica, the lobotomized retriever) sat on the
Air Hog.

Broke off the vertical, bent the heck
out of the tail boom, generally warped the entire EPP airframe.

I straightened out the plastic tail
boom (try that with carbon fiber!) put the tail back together and discarded the
superfluous wing struts. The Air Hog looked fine. Only it
wouldn't fly. When you tossed it, it banked, rolled and nosed
in.

 Finally under microscopic inspection I
detected that the tail boom had some residual bend to the right, almost
undetectable to the human (or at least Nagel) eye, but enough to cause a violent
rudder roll.

So the Air Hog is repaired and the dog
is forgiven. Two lessons here:

1. The cheap POS little Air Hog Aero Ace is
actually a precision piece of manufacture. Who'd have thunk
it?

and

B. Get yourself a hound dog, not a lobotomized
retriever.

Re: [RCSE] The heck with World F3B Wins, DP gets last 2m award

2006-07-30 Thread Tom Kallevang
Gordy gets it part right (again).

The Hi Johnson trophy is an AMA award for the highest single score at
the Soaring Nats. AMA used to run the events with all classes flown
each day (you built a 2M, 100 and an unlimited plane every day) and
flew a couple rounds of each class daily. This resulted in each class
flying the same number of rounds, and the Hi Johnson awarded the single
highest point score of the classes.

With the advent of splitting the classes into day slots and the demise
of the 100 Standard Class, we are now able to fly more rounds of 2M
than Unlimited due to the difference in the number of pilots.

LSF approached AMA last week about how to go about changing the
criteria for the award to something more in keeping with the original
intent of the Hi Johnson trophy. After a short conversation, a process
was adopted and I will draft a letter asking to revise the criteria so
the award is independent of the number of rounds flown in each class.

This was what I meant at the workers banquet when I said Daryl won the
last Hi Johnson 2M Award, not that anything was changing as relates to
2M at the Nats.

[RCSE] FS: Like New Vintage ARF Falcon 880

2006-07-22 Thread Tom Roberts
For Sale: Like New Vintage ARF Falcon 880

This vintage Falcon 880 has been in storage for the
past 15 years and I have finally decided to sell it
due to my lack of involvement with the hobby. Remember
Daryl Perkins yellow and blue Falcon 880 which he has
won countless contests with? This is Falcon is a
carbon copy but painted white (top) and blue (bottom)
instead. This Falcon is NICE! Countless hours have
been put into wing construction and and overall finish
of this model.

Wings have a S3021 airfoil. Construction is 1/16 inch
balsa over 1.5 lb density expanded bead white foam
with carbon fiber/glass reinforced spar stucture.
Trailing edges are reinforced with glass cloth between
the balsa for stiffness durability. Over the entire
wing structure 3/4 oz. glass was applied to the balsa
to seal the structure prior to lacquer painting.
Hinges are Arrow-shaft type with each flap having
about 60 degrees travel from nuetral. Wings already
have servo cutouts and wiring installed. After all
these years in storage, the wings are still very
straight and glass smooth. Included is an oil-hardened
wing rod. Fuselage is finished with white laquer
paint, has tow hook installed and two Airtronics 94102
servos installed. Fuselage is epoxy glass with kevlar
reinforcement. Canopy is a dark blue pigmented epoxy
glass type. Tail surfaces are monokoted built-up balsa
structures. Care was taken to keep the tail as light
as possible. Fuselage linkages are installed and
operational. When this Falcon was completed it was
flown for a total of about 1 hour then stored in a
bedroom for 15 years. Total flying weight is in the
low 70 oz.

My preference is to hand deliver this model to the
buyer or a friend of the buyer in the Santa Clara
County California area since I don't want to see this
item crushed by the shipping company. I'm willing to
deliver for free in Santa Clara County. If a local

Re: [RCSE] Muncie Weather?

2006-07-20 Thread tom
As someone who has never been involved with power planes, I got here a day
early and figured I watch some power stuff. Never realized that Pattern
flying meant everyone does the same thing over and over and over, etc. for
three days. It rained some today, so it cooled off a bit. Lots of big
storms to the North.
T

Temperature at my flying field in Oklahoma was 106 today and heading
higher tomorrow. Not enough Gatorade in the world to take much more of
 that!
Looking forward to those balmy high '80s in Muncie this weekend!
