[RCSE] Batteries on Airlines

2008-01-03 Thread jamesathomas
Before this becomes a major crisis, note that this is only about lithium
batteries. And it only pertains to loose batteries that are not installed in
the device they are designed for. Your laptop, cellphone, iPod, Blackberry and
other devices are just fine as long as the battery is installed (doesn't work
too well otherwise). The concern is the potential for fire if a loose battery
is shorted by coming into contact with something. TSA also doesn't seem to
care about carry on, just checked luggage.

The other interesting thing is there is no mention of NiCd, NiMH, etc. just
lithiums.

I recently switched from Batteries America to cheapbatterypacks.com on the
recommendation of a very active experienced(particularly in electrics!)
club member-Lenny Keer whom I'm sure many of you know!
I have only used them twice so far however, there service is excellent (even
a custom pack only took 4 days), their prices low and their Gold Peak
cells/batteries (at least the NiMH) are the best I have used so far
particularly for sustained high power output!

Kent,
Here are my two best sources for batteries. Neither of these sources are
the cheapest, but they offer the best quality workmanship and customer
service in my experience.

1) For TX and RX packs, talk to Steve Anthony, owner of NoBS Batteries.
He is super helpful and will make up custom packs to your specs. There IS a
difference in pack quality and Steve's are among the very best.

2) For RX and motor packs, I often go to Steve and Sarah Hill at Robotic

you want. The quality of his pack construction is excellent. Their
customer service is outstanding.

That's a rather odd message, considering that I specifically acknowledged
that you were probably talking about Batteries America.

By the way, there's something different about your email headers that you
might want to know about. Most of the follow-up posts here have either an
In-Reply-To: or a References: header, but your posts have neither. For some
email clients this can cause your follow-up messages to appear all by
themselves, which is what happened in my case. On my email program, I had to
reluctantly activate enable threading by subject to get your messages to
appear along with the rest of their respective threads.

I should also add that many here have complained that they don't always
receive all of the RCSE messages. That's another reason why it's good
practice to always quote the text you're replying to, and to never assume
that your readers will see on their screens the same list of posts in the
same order that you see on yours. It might work okay on web-based forums like
RCGroups.com, but you can't depend on it here.

Eastern civilization as we know it fails. Again, some feel that this
has already happened.

| If you use the wrong charger does it do any damage to the battery pack?

Seriously, the difference between how NiMH and NiCd batteries are peak
charged is that NiMH cells have a smaller peak. So if you use a NiCd
charger on NiMH cells, it may `miss' the peak and keep charging even
after it's full. Or it may not -- it depends on how sensitive it is.
Overcharging at a high rate is definately very bad, and will destroy
the pack quickly.

If you use a NiMH charger on NiCd cells, the peak will be larger, so
it'll probably be just fine, though it might stop before the battery
is completely charged. Most NiMH chargers work fine with NiCd
batteries too.

Everything I just said is about peak chargers. If you're talking
about a slow charger, the sort where it just puts C/10 or so into the
battery, nothing bad will happen. NiMH cells will probably take
longer to charge, having more capacity and a higher self discharge
rate, but beyond that there's no issues.

Re: [RCSE] Batteries and Chargers

2005-01-24 Thread George Joy
Jack,
The problem here is NiMH cells, nothing will happen to NiCd cells,
in fact a NiMH charger is better for the NiCd cells than is a NiCd charger
because it has a more sensitive overvoltage detect.
All chargers except the Sirius charge line use Delta peak detection,
in other words they all overcharge the cells to find a peak. OVERCHARGE is
the number one killer of ALL batteries.
The Sirius Charge line is the only PEAK PREDICTION charger on the
market. It is the SAFEST there is for both NiCd and NiMH cells, PERIOD.
If you or anyone would like a deeper discussion of battery
maintenance, I can be reached @ 800-532-0092.

What happened was that I was charging at 330mah, and
over time, it was only taking one hour to charge them
at this rate. Took the pack to the store and they confirmed
capacity was 330 to 360mah by cycling them a few times.

This is strange, the e flight guys that I know all charge their NiMh's
at twice their rated capacity with an Astro 112D charger. I have done
the
  same and had good results.

I was referring to the Sanyo NiCad (not NiMH) 1100AAU's. These are special
hi-capacity batteries. Spec sheet doesn't list a quick charge rate.

I charge my 5 packs of Sanyo 1100 AAU's at 2 Amps with my ancient TRC
Impuse peak charger. Never a warm cell, and they still rate good on the
cycler. Had one pack lose capacity after 3 years of use.

The other question is, how did you charge your NiMh batteries? Was it

I've used and charged my Radio Shack 1500 AA NiMH 'transmitter' batteries several
times now, and its all A-ok on the Western Front, and counting.

I promise to let the alias know if and when I have any perceptible problems

I guarantee these are going to get a LOT of use now and throughout the
