As a retired software test engineer, I know that data dictionaries were very, very important to both developers and testers in the projects on which I worked. A preference variable dictionary would be very similar and have a similar role. And just as we did not keep our data dictionaries secret from our end-users, a preference variable dictionary should not be kept from SeaMonkey users. Levels of user usage.. This is an old message, but what the heck. Some people are only concerned 'that' something works. They really don't care 'how' it works. And having a glimmer to some level of the 'how' makes the upper things a lot easier to deal with. But the 'how' has several levels too. So which level do you want to hang your hat on? User.js is not the end file. If I remember correctly it is an auxiliary file to prefs.js. Prefs.js is read into memory when the application is booted and pulls in user.js as a tag-a-long to be made a part thereof. Or maybe they are two different physical memory files or maybe it really doesn't make any difference to the guy who only cares 'that' it works. The whole thing is concept with physical underpinnings There are dictionaries of pref.js parameters on the web, and the ones I have seen will tell you right up front they are not complete -- but my experience is that they have a lot more information that than the gui interface or 'help' will give you. I would say more real, but that depends on what you consider 'real' to be -- real is a level. Someone said that Seamonkey was 'too complicated' for Firefox users. How many are aware that in past releases they basically ran the same way. What is basically? On one level, you could say that the BIOS and the OS are basically the same, just on different levels. However, in the case of SM (previously Netscape) and Firefox I am talking about some base files being exactly or largely interchangeable... This is mostly only by observation, and reading, that I know this so maybe the elephant is really much like a snake.. Personally, i bemoan what is considered computer literate today... I run five main browsers, more if you include linux, solaris, etc., and on one level, they are all the same, only in different clothes, on another level they are often unique. I often have questions that someone else knows the answer to and for that I am grateful. Right now I am stymied by the SMTP-AUTH problem in the SM2.0 release. I do not know the answer, and in that case i am only concerned 'that' it works. It worked fine in the Beta version. I also think it is ridiculous to release something with such a major bug. Somebody knows the answer I seek.. It's all so simple, i'm sure. jim ends his epistle for today. -- Many years ago, about 1979 or '80, an issue of Computer Weekly had a cover reading the Black Art of Systems Programming the story said that the way things were going that we would end up with only a small group of people who actually knew how things worked in computerland. That story has proved correct.. Very interesting digression Jim! But to get back to SM 2.0 release, I think, with all due respect to the hard work of the developpers, it might have been better to, first not to hurry too much to release 2.0, second, not to underestimate the heritage of Netscape, Mozilla and SM 1.xx, just because the code, written by others, appeared to be too convoluted. Putting it another way, the Mozilla Suite with a modern engine might have been what a lot of users were hoping for! But from a positive perspective, let us hope that an early update will soon come and correct the most obvious problems ... even if today's trend is to write new code ... and create new problems, instead of correcting existing ones. The relevant file path seems to be: C:\Documents and Settings\Richard Lane\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\default\3gzpjw8f.slt\bookmarks.html Create a batch file startSM.bat and run it to start SM: This batchfile will: 1. copy the file C:\Documents and Settings\Richard Lane\Application \Data\Mozilla\Profiles\default\3gzpjw8f.slt\bookmarks.html somewhere else. 2. start SM 3. exit Now you have the choice to start SM by this batchfile, when you know that the bookmark is OK, or if the bookmark is not ok: Create and run startOK-SM.bat that will: 1. copy from somewhere else the correct bookmarks.html file into C:\Documents and Settings\Richard Lane\Application \Data\Mozilla\Profiles\default\3gzpjw8f.slt\bookmarks.html 2. start SM 3. exit Nice solution Reading your solution I realized that in my suggestion i left out the restore module of the .bat where arg 1 (1) would be the word restore and an initial check that IF .1 == .restore then go to the restore module. (also, in case a bad copy has been saved as a backup, i would suggest setting up a rotation of, say, 3 additional backups suffixed sav1,sav2,sav3, which would require use of the if exist parm and rename and delete cmds.)[1] [1]That means that 2 will need to be sav | sav1 | sav2 | sav3 and possibly default on blank to sav1 OR that could be an argument of the restore module which would then require interactive execution. Surely i left something out.. jim ___ support-seamonkey mailing list support-seamonkey@lists.mozilla.org https://lists.mozilla.org/listinfo/support-seamonkey
Re: SeaMonkey v2 extension replacements
With patience akin to a cat's, Ant, on 11/26/2009 8:29 AM typed: I finally installed SeaMonkey v2.0 cleanly! I am slowly, manually reconfiguring it to match my old v1.1.18 installations. However, I have two old extensions that won't install in SeaMonkey v2.0: TinyURL Creator v2.0 -- http://mozmonkey.com/ Originally, I thought I could get this extension to work with SM 2 by hacking the install.rdf file within the .xpi and bumping up the version number for SM. However, the install.rdf file uses an older syntax for the target applications (at least this is what appears to be the case), and substituting the following for the older SM entry doesn't pass muster on SM 2's compatibility check: em:targetApplication !-- SeaMonkey -- Description em:id{92650c4d-4b8e-4d2a-b7eb-24ecf4f6b63a}/em:id em:minVersion2.0a1/em:minVersion em:maxVersion2.1/em:maxVersion /Description /em:targetApplication Since there aren't any alternatives for SM 2, and TinyURL really is the best extension, given its link shrinkage service chooser, I bit the bullet and switched off compatibility checking in SM 2 in order to get the hacked .xpi to install. This is, of course, by adding extensions.checkCompatibility to the prefs.js using about:config, and setting it to false. This is the only way I've been able to get TinyURL Creator 2.0 to install for SM 2--and it does work flawlessly once it's installed. Caveat: the Add-Ons Manager will continually burp at you that the compatibility check is turned off while this pref is set to false, and update checks for TinyURL will fail due to the extension's current coding. Ant, I haven't sent Jeremy Gillick, the author of this extension, an e-mail yet, to ask if he'd officially update it for SM 2. But I intend to, and encourage you to do so as well. The more users that inquire, the more incentive he'll have to make the update. There's a contact link at his website that you have already noted above. Hello, Is anyone else having trouble viewing breitbart pages. Mine comes up with about 1/2 inch of the article visible on the right side of the page. I can see about two letters of an article showing below the h in the word Search at the top of the page. The top headings are in their correct positions, but not the stories?! Gnash and Seamonkey not working
Using SM 2.0. Xubuntu 9.10. Synaptic installs for Gnash, mozilla- plugin-gnash, ffmpeg, gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg. Initially Youtube played but was erratic and shakey (my internet connection is fast and the non- free plugin worked OK) not really watchable. But now after a few trys Youtube does work at all, the flash embedded window is a black area that does nothing. I would really like not to use the non-free plugin even though it works OK. I would be nice if there was a meta-package that installed everything needed in one swoop. In any event is there anything I can do to fix?
