[OSM-talk] Society of Cartographers
Volume 41 of the Society of Cartographers Bulletin arrived by post on Friday, and mighty fine it looks too, with it's enhanced colour section. OSM is particularly well represented in this issue too. Main articles include: Geodata collection in the 21stC Nick Black and Steve Coast Designing maps for the colour-vision impaired Bernhard Jenny and Nathaniel Vaughn Kelso Open source renders the world Artem Pavlenko Musical maps: a musical approach to cartography Brian Rogers Design matters - time matters Pam Baldaro Mapping the sky Daniel Thomas Cartography and Google EarthSteve Chilton There are also 8 pages of cartography tips, plus map and book reviews, and notes on meetings, exhibitions and conferences. If you are not a member of the Society of Cartographers you can get all this (and more benefits) by joining for a ridiculously low annual fee: http://www.soc.org.uk/member.htm If you like the sound of all this you should also consider attending a Society of Cartographers Summer School (or the upcoming Illustrator workshop http://www.soc.org.uk/workshop.htm). You can upload a GPX with a tracklog and waypoints, but not (AIUI) with waypoints alone. Understood. Thus not usable for me because I have collected just waypoints along already well mapped roads :( The GPX format isn't that complex. So it shouldn't be too difficult to put a fake tracklog with a length of one track point (at the location of one of the waypoints) into the file. Yes, I know, and I will probably do it that way. However, I think that uploading POIs should be done as easy as possible for everybody. Once the roads and streets are ready mapping will probably mean more and more collecting places. It does not sound a big change to make it possible to upload waypoints only. -Jukka- ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/talk

[OSM-talk] Contours server (was: Re: ski pistes)
Contours layer presented by openpistemap is simply great. Does it exist a server publishing only this layer? I'm not sure how that would work - you really need the contours data set to be the bottom layer, with the normal layers on top of that (is it possible to ask OpenLayers to render the OSM Mapnik tiles on top of another layer? I suspect not since the tiles aren't transparent...) OpenPisteMap only has contours data for specific areas because the data set is pretty enormous (I did try converting the whole SRTM3 data set to shapefiles - I gave up by the time it had done about 3/4 of Eurasia and sucked up over 100 gig of disk space. I haven't tried pulling the whole data set into PostGIS yet - I wonder if that is any more efficient). Another consideration is that the contours tiles have to be tailored to the map type a bit - for example, the cycle map renders the contours closer together (i.e. it introduces each set of contour lines at lower zoom levels than the piste map). The mountainous terrain of the pistes results in unreadably close contour lines if you just try to apply the cycle map styles. I'm working on Viking, a desktop GPS data editor capable of rendering data on top of image downloaded on line. Having a contours layer would be usefull to prepare hicking. For that kind of application, it might be better to implement an API to retrieve the contour shapes from an online database and render them on-the-fly in the application. That would allow the user to tune the settings to suit the terrain. - Steve xmpp:[EMAIL PROTECTED] sip:[EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.nexusuk.org/ Servatis a periculum, servatis a maleficum - Whisper, Evanescence ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/talk

It's a slow enough process that render on demand doesn't work so well either. I've been quite successful with doing render on demand - tiles which have never been rendered are pushed into a render queue and the HTTP connection is left idling. If the tile is rendered within 30 seconds the user gets it sent over the HTTP connection as soon as possible, otherwise they get a 404 and the tile remains in the queue until it is rendered. The render-server process is currently set to be able to render up to 4 tiles in parallel and also copes well with requests for tiles that are already queued or being rendered. That said, it is running on a pretty meaty server (an 8 core 1.86GHz Xeon E5320), and it isn't very busy (serving 15k - 36k tiles per day over the past 5 days). I suspect that storing the contours in PostGIS helps quite a bit too. I suspect that storing the contours in PostGIS helps quite a bit too. Yeah, on the cycle map it manages 12 tiles/sec with 4 cores. I was mainly comparing with standard OSM tiles which I can get nearly 200 tiles/sec. I'm assuming you can get about 20-30 tiles/sec, probably higher with your wider spaced contours. So it'll probably work as long as no one starts trying to scrape the tiles... What I'm really after is a way to import the daily diffs into the existing PostGIS DB. That would hopefully speed up the weekly import I do quite a lot. Not a very trivial change though. I wouldn't recommend the -m option even if it did work... it's a LOT slower -- it's faster to just let it use swap, but it might be worth it if you could then apply updates. Primarily I am thinking a walking trail (say called 'Dead man's leap' ;-) which might start at a parking location (trail head?) and follow a road for 1km, footpath for 2km, ford a stream, etc.. These might also be more extensive, such as 'Route 66' (USA) or 'Cowboy Trail' (Alberta, Canada). If not, I would propose another category of way; which would be mapped as an additional way at the same locations as the normal ways. There could be a node 'trail head' for the start/trail head/staging post, and 'trail point'(??) for directional/informational locations. Specifying a trail type (car, walking, horse, cycle, snow-mobile, etc) would also be sensible. [Thinking more as I type this, is this not also applicable for bus routes?] In terms for rendering I think that this would not normally be rendered on the normal maps, but a 'tourist map' might include these as a dot-dashed(??) line. Cheers, Mungewell Take a look at http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/index.php/Relations/Routes, the cyclemap currently has support for them, and I'm thinking about rendering long distance paths (UK term for a trail) for one local project I'm involved in. -- Regards, Thomas Wood (Edgemaster) ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/talk

Yesterday (sunday 16th) one of the major italian newspapers, La Stampa based in Turin, published a 1 page article about OpenStreetMap. http://www.lastampa.it/_web/cmstp/tmplrubriche/tecnologia/grubrica.asp?ID_blog=30ID_articolo=4197ID_sezione=38sezione=News| ...basically with this article Edoardo is now a national open mapping icon ;) 2. This morning me and pibinko was at a radio show at Radio Popolare, a left-wing radio station. It was a 1 hour talk-show http://www.radiopopolare.it/ The interesting aspect on this -independently of the type of radio- is that one afternoon show, airing MON-FRI from 5 to 6 PM, will be covering OSM-related activities in the area of Milano over the next couple of months, promoting events we will propose (mapping parties, presentations, etc.) The radio show is all about different aspects of things happening around the town of Milano, with a focus on the street, mobility issues etc, and has some comedy twist. In the preparation of this collaboration we have also been getting in touch with various potential map makers and map users, that did not even suspect the existence of OSM (and seem to like the idea now that they know). So: we are very curious of seeing the developments of this initiative. all this will be happening in Italian...but we will do our best to keep the international community posted on the developments of this collaboration with Mente Locale (this is the name of the radio show) Regards!
