The NAME displays nicely but I don't see the need to have to adjust the 'extra' bits - not that I can until something IS decided anyway? And the roundabouts are fun as well - I don't want the name because it gets displayed but they are then getting flagged as no-name. Hello, Over at downloads.cloudmade.com, we've just added Navit format files for most countries of the world derived from OSM data. We had a quick look at Navit on Frday afternoon - the files load and allow routing, but there are a few rough edges, like flight paths in Germany. Navit's been around for a while now and it seems like a cool project. Are many people in OSM using it regularly? If so, what platforms are you using it on? It would be awesome to get it running on Open Tom - its Linux / GTK based, so this should be feasible. But even the Zona Colonial isn't there .. and that would be great fun to walk and map (though be careful, some sketchy places just on the outskirts on the center). http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=18.47lon=-69.9023zoom=13layers=B000FTF Santiago looks extremely well mapped. http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=19.415lon=-70.6205zoom=12layers=B000FTF I suggest getting in touch with local mappers, maybe through a mapping party. Though the wiki page isn't even existing .. http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/index.php/Dominican_Republic What I usually do is download data for an area, through the Export tab, and then get a list of users by running this one-liner.. $ perl -nle 'print $1 if /user=(.*?)/' map.osm | sort | uniq -c Then you can look up each user's page on OSM, and send them a message directly. Consequently this would mean to tag streets not only with the features they have but also with oneway:absent=yes, cyclelane:absent=yes and so on to indicate that someone has checked that a feature is definitely not there. That just doesn't follow at all. You are claiming that having a tag for no name is a slippery slope which leads to a tag for no special lane for tractors or whatever. Why should that be? I don't think the slope is slippery at all. I admit that my examples were a bit extreme. Although, the suggestions for possible applications of a global :absent tag in the noname-proposal at least point towards the slippery slope. So having a noname=yes (or whatever - the syntax is unimportant for this discussion) absolutely does not mean you need a nopostbox=yes or a notractorlane=yes tag. I agree that syntax is not an issue here (albeit different syntax can suggest different ways of using a tag, as you using no*=yes in your examples compared to me using *:absent=yes in mine demonstrates ;-). My argumentation was about the two different concepts underlying the noname/absent/... and ignore-test tags. Both solutions yield the same results and do not differ much in their implementation in a validator, but from the point of what type of information is put in the database they are very different. I think, we should at least consider this differences and their effects before putting the whole noname thing down as merely a syntactical pernicketiness. Quite a lot of cartographers (like me :) ) _just_ use Illustrator - no GIS at all. If you're a freelance cartographer-for-hire it makes sense. Effectively with AI downloads, or export, or whatever OSM would become your GIS (and where you'd do all your digitisation), which is good, because it means more data for us without having to reverse something out of a printed map. cheers Richard ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk

[OSM-talk] Metro Manila Philippines needs some OSM love Part 2
Hi, Just got the news today from an OSM mapper that Metro Manila Philippines is now in Google Mapmaker See this: http://www.google.com/mapmaker?gw=10ll=14.555339,121.05835spn=0.295086,0.31826z=12 I have to admit that it is impressive in many parts (but not as detailed as where I am currently mapping). However, we all know it ain't free as in freedom. So again here's my OSM love campaign. Calling all OSMer! Please join us in an online mapping party for Metro Manila Philippines. A couple of minutes (or hours or days) of your time editing using the Yahoo! imagery is most welcome. Using yahoo imagery, we want to complete a first pass edit to many areas in the metropolis (yahoo imagery in Metro Manila is pretty much dated by our guesstimate: 5 years old, but still very much useful). Before editing please consider the following: 1. choose an area where there is virtually no edits (this way we don't mess-up other contributions); 2. we have mostly completed major routes (motorway/truks/primary) so the remaining tags would be mostly residential areas; 3. add the tag highway=road. Also have a look at the http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/index.php/Yahoo!_Aerial_Imagery#Problems_with_tracing_Yahoo for tips. cheers, maning -- |-|--| | __.-._ |Ohhh. Great warrior. Yes, you're absolutely right Neil. They've finally put up the other sign (on the eastern end). It's clear that the whole U shaped loop is indeed Commonwealth Place (both a street and probably an area as well). I drove past tonight and there is still significant road works going on. I'll tag Commonwealth Place right away and tomorrow, I'll try to make sure the whole area is up to date given the current standing of the roadworks. The front bit of Commomwealth Place will need to be tagged carefully since it is a two way single lane shared access lane with a 10 KPH speed limit.
